- 0:00There are many forms of suggestion, some more subtle
- 0:04than others. Peer pressure is one form that
- 0:07everyone experiences at some point in time.
- 0:10Our friends and acquaintances do something and encourage us to
- 0:14participate and do it also. In some cases this can lead to
- 0:19lifelong consequences, such as gaining an addiction to alcohol,
- 0:24drugs, tobacco, etcetera. In other instances, it can be a
- 0:29positive force. Suggestion is a form of
- 0:32influence that acts when it finds a sympathetic vibration or
- 0:36receptivity in an individual. Another form of suggestion is
- 0:42advertising and it's further extension of propaganda.
- 0:47In these instances, the suggestion is a highly organized
- 0:50campaign designed to influence behavior over time through
- 0:55repeated exposure of the message.
- 0:58Subliminal sleep programming is another form of suggestion that
- 1:02has been used to teach various subjects while the individual is
- 1:06asleep. Aldos Huxley and his Brave New
- 1:09World describe the use of this technique to program societal
- 1:14propaganda into the minds of the children, so that it became a
- 1:19core truth of their being without their recognition of the
- 1:23source and meaning of this belief.
- 1:26Suggestion, however, need not be only in the form of overt
- 1:30statements or example. There is also the exercise of
- 1:34willpower which can exert force upon an individual to bring him
- 1:39to do things desired by whoever is exercising that will.
- 1:44A reported example was a parent disputing with a neonatal nurse
- 1:48about what the hospital and nurse wanted to do with the
- 1:51newborn infant. The parent was speaking calmly
- 1:55but forcefully, and the nurse reacted by saying that he should
- 1:59cease attacking her or she would have him banned from the
- 2:02hospital. The nurse felt the will pressure
- 2:06and interpreted it as an attack. Charismatic dictators and
- 2:11demagogues use the force of will to reinforce their words and
- 2:16specifically stated desires, to adhere the followers to their
- 2:20wishes and have them act even without explicit instruction.
- 2:26Not all suggestion comes from human sources either.
- 2:30Vital beings who prey upon human emotional outbursts as well as
- 2:34forces that transmit illness or other traumatic situations, are
- 2:39able to project their force to try to weaken and penetrate the
- 2:44vital envelope and physical protection of the individual.
- 2:48And if they succeed, the individual can succumb to that
- 2:52vital pressure, react in ways that are even uncharacteristic,
- 2:57or wind up with a bout of illness.
- 3:01When one is in the presence of a spiritually awakened master, the
- 3:05pressure in the atmosphere surrounding them is palpable.
- 3:08It is said that in certain ashrams of certain Vedic rishis,
- 3:13wild beasts would live quietly side by side with animals who
- 3:17would normally be their prey. Due to the influence of the
- 3:21atmosphere, certain locations are imbued with a force of
- 3:26suggestion that accumulates in the very stones of the
- 3:30buildings. An experiment was done with a
- 3:33stone that came from a temple that had been used for hundreds
- 3:36of years as a place of prayer, worship, and aspiration.
- 3:41Kerlian photography showed a distinct and powerful radiance
- 3:45coming off that stone compared to no such radiance from an
- 3:49ordinary stone not subjected to decades or centuries of intense
- 3:55prayer energies, Sri Aurobindo observes Quote A suggestion is
- 4:01not one's own thought or feeling, but a thought or
- 4:04feeling that comes from outside, from others, from the general
- 4:08atmosphere, or from external nature.
- 4:11If it is received, it sticks and acts on the being and is taken
- 4:16to be one's own thought or feeling.
- 4:18If it is recognized as a suggestion, then it can be more
- 4:23easily got rid of. By suggestion I do not mean
- 4:27merely thoughts or words. When the hypnotist says sleep it
- 4:32is a suggestion. But when he says nothing but
- 4:36only puts his silent will to convey sleep or makes movements
- 4:41with his hands over the face, that also is a suggestion.
- 4:47When a force is thrown on you or a vibration of illness, it
- 4:51carries to the body this suggestion.
- 4:54A wave comes in the body with a certain vibration in it.
- 4:59The body remembers cold or feels the vibration of a cold and
- 5:03begins to cough or sneeze or to feel chill.
- 5:07The suggestion comes to the mind in the form I am weak, I don't
- 5:11feel well. I am catching a cold and quote
