- 0:00Speaker 1: And times where I go through challenges, I go back
- 0:02Speaker 1: to that moment and I say, you've made it through that,
- 0:05Speaker 1: and you you came out on the other side with
- 0:07Speaker 1: some of the most incredible blessings that you are so
- 0:09Speaker 1: grateful for.
- 0:11Speaker 2: So this is a piece of cake. You know you
- 0:13Speaker 2: got this.
- 0:28Speaker 3: Hey everyone, Emily A body here coming to you from
- 0:31Speaker 3: the AG studio. You are listening to episode one eighty
- 0:35Speaker 3: nine of Hurdle, a wellness focus podcast where I connect
- 0:38Speaker 3: with everyone from your favorite athletes to top experts and
- 0:41Speaker 3: industry CEOs about their highest ties, toughest moments, and everything
- 0:46Speaker 3: in between. We all go through hurdles in life, and
- 0:49Speaker 3: my goal through these discussions is to empower you to
- 0:52Speaker 3: better navigate yours and move with intention so that you
- 0:56Speaker 3: can stride towards your own big potential and have some
- 0:59Speaker 3: fun along the way. I hope everybody had a great holiday,
- 1:04Speaker 3: and for those of you that are online.
- 1:06Speaker 4: This week, I am too. You are not alone.
- 1:11Speaker 3: We can do hard things and that's why I am
- 1:14Speaker 3: bringing you this episode specifically to remind you that episode
- 1:17Speaker 3: one eight nine I am chatting with Peloton instructor Kirston Ferguson.
- 1:23Speaker 3: You know that the fitness circle in New York is
- 1:26Speaker 3: quite small, so a lot of the Peloton instructors that
- 1:29Speaker 3: I've had on the show, I have met them before,
- 1:32Speaker 3: we've hung out before, but Kirsten is new to the
- 1:35Speaker 3: squad and we hadn't spoken before, and so this was
- 1:38Speaker 3: a really exciting opportunity to get to know her better.
- 1:42Speaker 3: In today's episode, we talk mostly about the hardships that
- 1:46Speaker 3: she's faced over the last decade, from struggling to have
- 1:49Speaker 3: children and navigating multiple miscarriages to navigating divorce. Kirsten talks
- 1:55Speaker 3: to me about how she got into fitness, eventually.
- 1:57Speaker 5: Teaching spin at home during the panic, and that the beautiful,
- 2:02Speaker 5: literally like serendipitous way that Peloton came to her in
- 2:07Speaker 5: her life, perhaps when she really needed it most.
- 2:11Speaker 3: I cannot say thank you to Kirsten enough. I really
- 2:14Speaker 3: appreciate her vulnerability, her openness, especially when it comes to
- 2:19Speaker 3: such hard, hard moments. She says it in Jay's episode,
- 2:23Speaker 3: and I can really really identify with this that she
- 2:26Speaker 3: is open about the struggles that she faced with miscarriage
- 2:29Speaker 3: because she knows that being vocal will help and empower
- 2:35Speaker 3: women to feel less alone on their journey. And that
- 2:38Speaker 3: is why I'm open and honest about the things that
- 2:41Speaker 3: I have been through. I know how important it is
- 2:44Speaker 3: for us to find that connection.
- 2:46Speaker 4: Life's hard enough as it is.
- 2:47Speaker 2: Right.
- 2:47Speaker 3: Thank you Kirsten again, I really appreciate it, and I'm
- 2:50Speaker 3: super excited to bring this episode to the feed.
- 2:53Speaker 4: Make sure you're following along with Hurdle over on social media.
- 2:55Speaker 4: It's at Hurdle Podcast.
- 2:56Speaker 3: I'm over at Emily a Body and I had a
- 2:59Speaker 3: lot of reach out last week from individuals who wanted
- 3:01Speaker 3: to go to the goal Setting Workshop but could not
- 3:04Speaker 3: make it live. Well, the good news is that I
- 3:07Speaker 3: have an on demand workshop that you can take to
- 3:09Speaker 3: gear yourself up for twenty twenty two and beyond. I
- 3:13Speaker 3: will link the on demand a goal Setting Workshop in
- 3:16Speaker 3: the show notes and I hope.
- 3:17Speaker 4: That it can help you on your journey. That's it
- 3:20Speaker 4: for now. With that, let's get to Hurtling today.
- 3:30Speaker 3: I am sitting down with Kirsten Ferguson. She is a
- 3:34Speaker 3: Peloton instructor. How you doing today, Kirsten?
- 3:37Speaker 2: I am good? I am good. It is what day
- 3:41Speaker 2: is it? I don't even know what day? It is?
- 3:42Speaker 1: Monday morning, It's Christmas time. My toddlers are off school,
- 3:46Speaker 1: for two weeks. It is crazy town in the Ferguson household.
- 3:50Speaker 2: But all is well.
- 3:52Speaker 4: How is that for you?
- 3:53Speaker 3: What does the momming and the work combo look like
- 3:56Speaker 3: for you these days?
- 3:57Speaker 2: You know, every day is different.
- 3:58Speaker 1: Every day is a journey, like to say, figuring it
- 4:01Speaker 1: out as I go, balancing it all. Every day is
- 4:05Speaker 1: a new challenge, a new day. But it's been going
- 4:07Speaker 1: good so far. Four months in and it's been good.
- 4:10Speaker 3: We won't like jump ahead too fast, too soon. But
- 4:14Speaker 3: you've only been teaching at Peloton for a short while now.
- 4:17Speaker 1: Yes, it's been almost four months, so still fresh, still new,
- 4:22Speaker 1: even though I feel like I've been here forever. Just
- 4:26Speaker 1: get started and then it's just like you're on the
- 4:28Speaker 1: journey and you're like off to the races.
- 4:30Speaker 4: But it's been great. Off to the races.
- 4:32Speaker 3: Well, you're no stranger to inspiring people via fitness. Have
- 4:36Speaker 3: you always been a super active person?
- 4:39Speaker 2: So in high.
- 4:40Speaker 1: School, I played basketball, but I didn't really fall in
- 4:45Speaker 1: love with fitness until I started my journey towards motherhood.
- 4:49Speaker 2: So I mean, I played basketball and did the things.
- 4:52Speaker 1: But when I moved to New York City to go
- 4:53Speaker 1: to fashion school, I kind of hung up my Nikes
- 4:57Speaker 1: for stilettos and did the whole New York City fashion
- 5:00Speaker 1: route for a little bit until I found that, you
- 5:03Speaker 1: know what, this isn't really for me, and I actually
- 5:05Speaker 1: started working for the NFL in marketing.
- 5:08Speaker 2: Wow.
- 5:08Speaker 1: Hard pivot for you, hard pivot. I feel like I'm
- 5:11Speaker 1: a cat. I've lived like nine lives.
- 5:14Speaker 4: What interested you in getting involved in marketing?
- 5:18Speaker 3: Because again, such like a big detour from where you
- 5:21Speaker 3: had been originally.
- 5:22Speaker 1: Yeah, So I was studying fashion merchandising. I thought it
- 5:24Speaker 1: was what I wanted to do. I thought shopping for
- 5:27Speaker 1: a living, how fabulous. And it wasn't that. It wasn't
- 5:31Speaker 1: what I thought.
- 5:32Speaker 2: And I had a friend that worked at the NFL,
- 5:34Speaker 2: and I just went in for an interview to be
- 5:37Speaker 2: an assistant in the sponsorship, which I had no idea
- 5:40Speaker 2: what that was at the time.
- 5:42Speaker 1: I'm in the interview googling what is sponsorship? And I
- 5:46Speaker 1: got the job and I figured it out. Seven years later,
- 5:48Speaker 1: I was still there, loving what I did.
- 5:50Speaker 2: And I have been.
- 5:53Speaker 1: One that just trusts the process, trusts the journey and
- 5:56Speaker 1: see where it takes you. And that's where it kind
- 5:59Speaker 1: of ended me up for seven years and then I
- 6:01Speaker 1: did the Beyonce Super Bowl halftime show and it was like,
- 6:03Speaker 1: Mike Drop, what do you do after that?
- 6:07Speaker 3: You know that's so interesting, right, because I think a
- 6:08Speaker 3: lot of people often hesitate to go for opportunities like
- 6:12Speaker 3: the one you just mentioned in the NFL and sponsorships
- 6:15Speaker 3: because either like a little imposter syndrome gets in the way,
- 6:19Speaker 3: or they're like, well, I can't be good as good
- 6:22Speaker 3: as whoever else like could be up for this. So
- 6:25Speaker 3: do you think that you always had that sense of
- 6:27Speaker 3: boldness or was this kind of a skill that you
- 6:30Speaker 3: acquired over time.
- 6:31Speaker 1: Gosh, No, it is something I acquired over time, and
- 6:34Speaker 1: it's something I'm still fighting to this day. You know,
- 6:37Speaker 1: even when I was in that interview, I was having
- 6:39Speaker 1: those conversations with myself, like girl, you know you are
- 6:43Speaker 1: not qualified for this job. What are you doing here?
- 6:45Speaker 1: But I just did it. And I've learned to just
- 6:48Speaker 1: try something and see what happens. And that has been
- 6:51Speaker 1: my journey. Even up to my Peloton auditions. I couldn't
- 6:55Speaker 1: believe that it was happening for me. In my head,
- 6:58Speaker 1: I was going through all the reasons I was not
- 7:01Speaker 1: qualified to do this role at all, but I said,
- 7:05Speaker 1: you know what, Kirsten, just go through the process. You know,
- 7:09Speaker 1: what's the worst that can happen. They don't choose you.
- 7:11Speaker 2: But look at all the lessons you could learn through
- 7:13Speaker 2: the process.
- 7:14Speaker 1: And you know, I stuck with that every single interview,
- 7:18Speaker 1: every single audition, and look where it's gotten me. So
- 7:22Speaker 1: I've really learned to trust that. But in the past,
- 7:24Speaker 1: absolutely not, absolutely not. Fear had stopped me so many
- 7:28Speaker 1: times in my life from taking things or doing things,
- 7:31Speaker 1: or believing that I could do things. But I think
- 7:34Speaker 1: it wasn't until like the last four years where I
- 7:36Speaker 1: really started to just embrace fear. If you don't have
- 7:39Speaker 1: those butterflies in your stomach, you don't have that, is
- 7:43Speaker 1: it really where you're supposed to be. You know, I've
- 7:45Speaker 1: started to realize that and it's really worked in my favor.
- 7:50Speaker 3: Then you mentioned not really getting heavily into fitness until
- 7:53Speaker 3: your journey to motherhood began. Tell us a little bit
- 7:57Speaker 3: about perhaps the catalyst for that with you.
- 8:00Speaker 2: Yeah. Absolutely, So.
- 8:01Speaker 1: I had worked at the NFL for seven years and
- 8:04Speaker 1: at the time my husband at the time, and I
- 8:06Speaker 1: was like, maybe it's time to have some kids. He
- 8:08Speaker 1: was working at the NFL at the time or working
- 8:10Speaker 1: for the NFL. He played for the Jets for ten
- 8:12Speaker 1: years and I was working for the NFL, and we
- 8:15Speaker 1: were just so crazy, and I was like, you know what,
- 8:17Speaker 1: maybe we step away. I'll step away and you really
- 8:21Speaker 1: try this mom life out, and you know, just thinking
- 8:25Speaker 1: that that was just the next step in life, right,
- 8:30Speaker 1: and you know, so many of my friends were having
- 8:32Speaker 1: children and I was like, this is this is it,
- 8:34Speaker 1: this is the time. And it didn't happen like that
- 8:37Speaker 1: for me. I struggled to get pregnant for a while.
- 8:42Speaker 1: We tried for a little over a year, and then
- 8:47Speaker 1: I did get pregnant and we were so excited. It
- 8:50Speaker 1: was around Mother's Day and we couldn't wait to tell
- 8:52Speaker 1: our family.
- 8:54Speaker 2: And then I miscarried. And then I had a really
- 8:58Speaker 2: difficult miscarriage that forced me to have some procedures done,
- 9:04Speaker 2: and then we had to wait another six seven months
- 9:06Speaker 2: before we could try again. So there was a.
- 9:08Speaker 1: Lot of It was a dark time, a dark place
- 9:11Speaker 1: for me, and that's where I really started to fall
- 9:14Speaker 1: in love with fitness. That's where I could find peace
- 9:19Speaker 1: for me was just going into a dark room and
- 9:21Speaker 1: working out and focusing on the things that I could
- 9:24Speaker 1: control because I couldn't control this. I wanted so much
- 9:28Speaker 1: to be a mother, but it was not happening for
- 9:31Speaker 1: me and the way that I wanted it to.
- 9:33Speaker 2: Have control issues at times, and so that's really where
- 9:39Speaker 2: I fell in love with fitness. But then after that,
- 9:43Speaker 2: we tried again. We got pregnant.
- 9:46Speaker 1: We heard a heartbeat, which was one of the most
- 9:48Speaker 1: beautiful sounds I've ever heard in my life.
- 9:50Speaker 2: Everything was going great, the checkups were going great.
- 9:54Speaker 1: We were about to travel, so I went for another
- 9:56Speaker 1: ultrasound and the baby had no heartbeat. And I feel
- 10:02Speaker 1: like that was probably the darkest point of my life
- 10:07Speaker 1: because I felt like I was finally on the other side,
- 10:10Speaker 1: you know, got through that and we heard the heartbeat
- 10:14Speaker 1: and there was life there and then there wasn't. And
- 10:19Speaker 1: so it was through that that I again. I Just
- 10:24Speaker 1: that day that I found out that I was miscarrying,
- 10:27Speaker 1: I went right to the gym and I just found.
- 10:31Speaker 2: Peace in it. But then there is a happy ending
- 10:37Speaker 2: to the story.
- 10:37Speaker 1: Five months later I got pregnant again with my daughter,
- 10:42Speaker 1: Eden Grace Ferguson, who is now six, and then six
- 10:47Speaker 1: months after she was born in came Emory Faith Ferguson.
- 10:53Speaker 2: So, and they are the loves of my life and
- 10:57Speaker 2: my why and all the things that I do today.
- 11:00Speaker 3: Wow, well, thank you so much for sharing that with us.
- 11:03Speaker 3: God was like, I know, I really throw you for
- 11:05Speaker 3: a loop there for a while. But six months after
- 11:07Speaker 3: your first one, I'm back with the vengeance.
- 11:10Speaker 1: I had a lot of things to learn, you know,
- 11:12Speaker 1: I think there's a lot of things to learn in
- 11:14Speaker 1: the dark time and the quiet time.
- 11:16Speaker 2: I say this all the time.
- 11:17Speaker 1: You know, through the dark comes light, And that has been,
- 11:21Speaker 1: you know, something I've carried with me and you know,
- 11:25Speaker 1: and times where I go through challenges, I go back
- 11:27Speaker 1: to that moment and I say, you've made it through that,
- 11:30Speaker 1: and you you came out on the other side with
- 11:32Speaker 1: some of the most incredible blessings that you should be
- 11:35Speaker 1: so grateful for or you are so grateful for.
- 11:38Speaker 2: So this is a piece of cake. You know, you
- 11:40Speaker 2: got this.
- 11:41Speaker 3: It's an acquired skill or perhaps a personality trait to
- 11:45Speaker 3: lean into something positive for yourself like health and wellness
- 11:50Speaker 3: and fitness versus obviously so many other opportunities or things
- 11:54Speaker 3: that could be available to you, perhaps other you know,
- 11:58Speaker 3: potentially addictive things. So for you and leaning in to
- 12:02Speaker 3: health and fitness. Was it bigger than just the act
- 12:05Speaker 3: of health and fitness? What did you have a big
- 12:07Speaker 3: community behind you? Talk to me about what that had
- 12:09Speaker 3: looked like for you at that time.
- 12:11Speaker 1: Yeah, at that time, I mean I had a lot
- 12:14Speaker 1: of friends that loved me, but they were all having children,
- 12:18Speaker 1: and for me, at that time, it was.
- 12:20Speaker 2: Hard to be around those friends.
- 12:22Speaker 1: It was hard to sit at dinner with those friends
- 12:25Speaker 1: where they all think they talk about as their kids,
- 12:27Speaker 1: or they would complain about things and I'd be like, gosh,
- 12:30Speaker 1: I would do anything for that, you know. So it
- 12:33Speaker 1: became difficult to even be around people that I loved
- 12:36Speaker 1: and I knew that loved me. And so getting into fitness,
- 12:41Speaker 1: I was able to just find peace and solace in there,
- 12:45Speaker 1: and I built a community of friends there that were
- 12:49Speaker 1: just focused on that, just that, you know, working out,
- 12:52Speaker 1: having a good time while we did listen to amazing music,
- 12:55Speaker 1: getting inspired by instructors. You know, sometimes instructor say just
- 13:00Speaker 1: the right thing at just the right moment when you
- 13:02Speaker 1: need it the most. So it became a place of
- 13:05Speaker 1: peace for me. And then even after I became a mother,
- 13:09Speaker 1: it became it is still a place of solace. I
- 13:12Speaker 1: call it my mommy, my mommy off time, you know,
- 13:15Speaker 1: because I'm able to take.
- 13:16Speaker 2: One hour a day where i can focus on me
- 13:19Speaker 2: and not worry about all the laundry lists of things
- 13:22Speaker 2: I have to get through through the day. So it
- 13:26Speaker 2: is it is just so much more than the workout
- 13:28Speaker 2: for me.
- 13:28Speaker 1: The workouts is and is the place for me, and
- 13:34Speaker 1: you know, the health benefits and all the things are
- 13:36Speaker 1: great that come along with it, but it's also more
- 13:39Speaker 1: about just the space for peace for me and solace
- 13:43Speaker 1: that I find in it to be.
- 13:45Speaker 3: The friend that maybe you didn't really feel comfortable being
- 13:50Speaker 3: around at that point, and whether this is because maybe
- 13:53Speaker 3: your friends, as you said, some of them had kids,
- 13:55Speaker 3: they were talking about having kids, or like just like
- 13:57Speaker 3: you needing your own space, Like what advice do you
- 14:00Speaker 3: have to the people that like want to support someone
- 14:05Speaker 3: who is going through a difficult time, like you want
- 14:08Speaker 3: to hold space for them, but might not know how
- 14:11Speaker 3: to show up. Having experienced situations like that myself, unfortunately,
- 14:15Speaker 3: when friends who have also lost wanting to know, like
- 14:17Speaker 3: what your perspective would be on how to show up.
- 14:20Speaker 1: Yeah, I mean that's a very interesting question. I think
- 14:23Speaker 1: being who they are and not treating you any different.
- 14:25Speaker 2: But you know, maybe it's not the lunch.
- 14:29Speaker 1: Maybe it is going finding out what I am loving
- 14:31Speaker 1: to do and going with me, you know, going with
- 14:34Speaker 1: me to the gym, or you know, trying a different
- 14:37Speaker 1: workout with me where it's not you know, let's sit
- 14:40Speaker 1: around the table and show the pictures and just knowing
- 14:44Speaker 1: and having a sensitivity around it.
- 14:46Speaker 2: You know, I think that's important.
- 14:50Speaker 1: And you know, talking about it, understanding where how you're
- 14:53Speaker 1: feeling and asking how they can support you. I think
- 14:57Speaker 1: that is helpful when someone's grieving and hurting in that space.
- 15:03Speaker 1: But you know, one of the things I realized is,
- 15:06Speaker 1: and that's why I'm so vocal about what I went through,
- 15:08Speaker 1: is not everybody it is vocal about it.
- 15:12Speaker 2: So at the time I felt very alone.
- 15:14Speaker 1: And so once I started speaking about it more and
- 15:16Speaker 1: finding that there were other women that have gone through this,
- 15:19Speaker 1: I found hope in that. I found peace in that.
- 15:21Speaker 1: And that is why I'm so vocal about sharing my story,
- 15:25Speaker 1: is that you know, if somebody else is going through that,
- 15:28Speaker 1: knowing that they're not alone.
- 15:29Speaker 3: Did you going through this time after the second miscarriage?
- 15:33Speaker 3: I would imagine maybe there was even a certain level
- 15:37Speaker 3: of fear about getting pregnant again, even though it was
- 15:41Speaker 3: something that you so desperately wanted.
- 15:42Speaker 2: I was terrified. I was terrified.
- 15:44Speaker 1: I was absolutely terrified the moment I found out I
- 15:48Speaker 1: was pregnant. Every step of the way, I didn't believe
- 15:53Speaker 1: it was going to happen. I didn't tell a lot
- 15:55Speaker 1: of people, you know, in the beginning, I did, But
- 15:59Speaker 1: when I got pregnant the third time, I didn't tell
- 16:01Speaker 1: a lot of people because I didn't want to have
- 16:04Speaker 1: to go through the text chain of all the people
- 16:06Speaker 1: that I told and just copy and paste, you know,
- 16:09Speaker 1: and then have to deal with all of that over
- 16:12Speaker 1: and over again. So I didn't tell a lot of people.
- 16:14Speaker 1: I was terrified. I'm still terrified to this day, you know,
- 16:19Speaker 1: just holding on praying that I don't love them. I
- 16:22Speaker 1: don't think that fear ever goes away. I think that's
- 16:24Speaker 1: just motherhood. That's just something that just comes with the
- 16:26Speaker 1: territory now. But every step of the way I was
- 16:30Speaker 1: was terrified. And you know, again, working out was a
- 16:34Speaker 1: place that helped me deal with that. You know, once
- 16:36Speaker 1: I was cleared to work out, I had to take
- 16:38Speaker 1: the first trimester off because I was kind of considered
- 16:40Speaker 1: high risk after my first two miscarriages, so I took
- 16:43Speaker 1: the first trimester off, but then once I was able
- 16:46Speaker 1: to get back into working out, it was again a
- 16:49Speaker 1: place of peace and solace for me. And I really
- 16:54Speaker 1: had to battle my control issues because mother like childbirth,
- 17:00Speaker 1: and you can't control it. There's so many little things
- 17:04Speaker 1: that have to happen for this miracle to come into
- 17:06Speaker 1: the world, and you have absolutely no control over it.
- 17:10Speaker 1: As much as you think you do, you don't, And
- 17:13Speaker 1: so really finding peace in that was a constant battle
- 17:18Speaker 1: for me.
- 17:19Speaker 3: Yeah, I mean letting go forget like justin like in motherhood,
- 17:23Speaker 3: like in general, is such a difficult thing for so
- 17:27Speaker 3: many and something that so many of us have had
- 17:29Speaker 3: to learn how to do a little bit better over
- 17:32Speaker 3: the couple of years.
- 17:34Speaker 1: And every single one of my classes, I make you
- 17:37Speaker 1: take three big inhales before we get into the actual workout,
- 17:40Speaker 1: and the last in hell, I said, let it go
- 17:42Speaker 1: like elsa baby, because so and it could be anything,
- 17:46Speaker 1: but we are carrying so much and we can't control everything,
- 17:50Speaker 1: you know, and there's just moments where you just got
- 17:52Speaker 1: to let it go.
- 17:53Speaker 4: Gotta let it go.
- 17:54Speaker 3: When do you transition from someone that seeks out fitness
- 17:58Speaker 3: as a tool to to cope, to feel good, to
- 18:01Speaker 3: find that solace, to being a person who wants to
- 18:05Speaker 3: be at the forefront of helping other people find that
- 18:08Speaker 3: same feeling.
- 18:09Speaker 1: I had no idea I wanted to do it until
- 18:11Speaker 1: I actually stepped out and did it.
- 18:13Speaker 2: Oh. I love that.
- 18:14Speaker 1: I was riding at a studio and someone said to me,
- 18:21Speaker 1: who ever thought about being an instructor? He was like,
- 18:23Speaker 1: absolutely not like I. When I tell you, I was
- 18:28Speaker 1: terrified of speaking in front of people. I was always
- 18:31Speaker 1: the girl that would never raise her hand in class.
- 18:33Speaker 1: I never wanted to present at work. I was terrified
- 18:37Speaker 1: of doing work presentations in front of people. Terrified. I
- 18:42Speaker 1: was like, absolutely not. But something inside of me said,
- 18:45Speaker 1: you know what, look and I looked up and that
- 18:47Speaker 1: company had auditions, and so I said, okay, you know what,
- 18:50Speaker 1: I'm going to go out there.
- 18:50Speaker 2: I'm going to try it. See what happens. It could
- 18:52Speaker 2: just be fun.
- 18:52Speaker 1: It could just be a fun experience to just take
- 18:55Speaker 1: myself into something super uncomfortable and just try it.
- 19:00Speaker 2: So I did it, and I remember the moment.
- 19:04Speaker 1: Where I put the mic on my face and I
- 19:05Speaker 1: looked at myself in the mirror and I said, Wow,
- 19:08Speaker 1: this is what you're supposed to do. And it was
- 19:10Speaker 1: a moment where I was kind of in shock because
- 19:14Speaker 1: I never in a millionaires thought that this was something.
- 19:16Speaker 2: I could do.
- 19:17Speaker 1: And even while I was training, I doubted myself imposter
- 19:22Speaker 1: syndrome constantly because I'd never done it before. But once
- 19:26Speaker 1: I started to just be authentically me and share my heart,
- 19:32Speaker 1: it everything changed for me.
- 19:34Speaker 2: You know.
- 19:35Speaker 1: I thought, you know, after going through what I went
- 19:39Speaker 1: through and having my children, I thought that being a
- 19:41Speaker 1: mother was going to be it for me and that
- 19:44Speaker 1: was that was what I was meant to be on
- 19:46Speaker 1: this earth. But then I was a longing as something
- 19:49Speaker 1: still inside me, like you have more to give besides this,
- 19:53Speaker 1: and I struggled with trying to figure that out. And
- 19:55Speaker 1: it wasn't until I looked at myself in the mirror
- 19:57Speaker 1: with that mic on my face that was like, this
- 19:58Speaker 1: is it.
- 20:00Speaker 2: And it wasn't easy.
- 20:02Speaker 1: It was not easy, but I knew in that moment
- 20:05Speaker 1: that this is what I was meant to do.
- 20:08Speaker 3: Two logistical questions, the first question being how long did
- 20:12Speaker 3: that training period take for you?
- 20:15Speaker 1: So I was in training for three months, but then
- 20:21Speaker 1: my daughter had a medical issue. She had ended up
- 20:24Speaker 1: having a seizure out of nowhere, and so my world
- 20:27Speaker 1: was rocked. My world was rocked, and like I said,
- 20:29Speaker 1: I was holding onto my babies with deer life. So
- 20:32Speaker 1: I walked away actually from that particular company, and I
- 20:36Speaker 1: focused on my daughter. There was tons of doctor's appointments,
- 20:38Speaker 1: tons of follow ups, and it was almost heartbreaking because
- 20:41Speaker 1: it was like, man, I feel like I found what
- 20:44Speaker 1: I want to do, but in this moment, I need
- 20:46Speaker 1: to be the mom. And so I did that, and
- 20:51Speaker 1: then another opportunity came up and I started teaching at
- 20:54Speaker 1: a smaller gym out here in New Jersey, and that's
- 20:59Speaker 1: where everything changed for me. That's where it just clicked.
- 21:02Speaker 1: There was no more imposter syndrome. It was like, I'm
- 21:04Speaker 1: going to get after it. I'm going to do this.
- 21:06Speaker 1: I'm going to inspire the people in this town and
- 21:08Speaker 1: this community. And it blew up from there and then
- 21:10Speaker 1: COVID hit.
- 21:12Speaker 2: And I was like, man, I'm just getting like it
- 21:16Speaker 2: was about to take off.
- 21:18Speaker 1: And then COVID hit and I had COVID like right
- 21:21Speaker 1: as soon as our gym shut down, and I said,
- 21:23Speaker 1: I remember being at home with COVID for three weeks.
- 21:26Speaker 1: I had to send my babies away. And it was
- 21:29Speaker 1: in that moment where it was like, what are you
- 21:31Speaker 1: going to do? Everybody's trying to figure it out.
- 21:33Speaker 2: What are you going to do? And I knew how
- 21:35Speaker 2: I was feeling in that moment.
- 21:36Speaker 1: I was feeling scared, I was feeling lonely, I was
- 21:39Speaker 1: feeling depressed. I was feeling so many emotions that I
- 21:44Speaker 1: think a lot of people were feeling. And I was like,
- 21:45Speaker 1: how can I be a light for people in this time?
- 21:50Speaker 1: So girl, I took out my phone. I never did
- 21:52Speaker 1: an Instagram live a day in my life. I was like,
- 21:55Speaker 1: here we go, put on the light, pulled out my
- 21:58Speaker 1: Peloton bike that I had twenty fifteen, and I started
- 22:02Speaker 1: teaching on a thing and it blew.
- 22:04Speaker 2: Up from there.
- 22:06Speaker 1: It blew up from there, and then six months later
- 22:10Speaker 1: I heard from Peloton.
- 22:12Speaker 3: The beautiful thing about writing a Peloton stuck inside your
- 22:15Speaker 3: own home, isn't it?
- 22:18Speaker 2: You never know what can happen for you.
- 22:20Speaker 4: You never know what could happen for you.
- 22:23Speaker 3: You know it's I commend you because so many of
- 22:28Speaker 3: the stories that you've shared so far, the circumstance, whether
- 22:31Speaker 3: it be between the losses that you experienced within your
- 22:34Speaker 3: family or you know, the scary moment that happened with
- 22:37Speaker 3: your daughter.
- 22:38Speaker 4: So many instances where you could have.
- 22:40Speaker 3: Just let the fear win right, And it's beautiful to
- 22:47Speaker 3: see the acknowledgment that you have over that inner voice
- 22:51Speaker 3: that says, but there's more for you. A lot of
- 22:54Speaker 3: people struggle to let that inner voice like true guide
- 23:01Speaker 3: their way, especially you know, with the like magnitude of
- 23:05Speaker 3: the situations that you experienced.
- 23:07Speaker 4: So I totally commend you on that.
- 23:10Speaker 3: Do you remember, I mean, I'm sure you do, but
- 23:12Speaker 3: do you remember where you were when you got the
- 23:14Speaker 3: call or were you with her when your daughter experienced
- 23:16Speaker 3: at seizure.
- 23:18Speaker 2: So this is the crazy thing. And I don't know
- 23:21Speaker 2: what everybody believed.
- 23:21Speaker 1: I believe in God, and it was it was something
- 23:24Speaker 1: that you know, I saw something on on my cameras
- 23:27Speaker 1: on my phone, and usually if she gets up, I
- 23:29Speaker 1: let her just go back to sleep. But something told
- 23:32Speaker 1: me to go upstairs. So I went upstairs and she
- 23:35Speaker 1: was sitting up in the bed in a blank stare.
- 23:39Speaker 1: I was like, yeah, you are right, and then I
- 23:41Speaker 1: went over to her and then she just started seizing
- 23:43Speaker 1: in my arms. And I it was thank god my
- 23:48Speaker 1: mother was here. My mom's a nurse, thank god she
- 23:50Speaker 1: was in town. She ran upstairs, and you know, it
- 23:55Speaker 1: was terrifying. You know, we called the ambulance and rushed
- 23:58Speaker 1: her to the hospital. But it was just one of
- 24:00Speaker 1: those moments. I was in the right place at the
- 24:02Speaker 1: right time. I had the cameras, so I had everything
- 24:04Speaker 1: on camera, so I was able to show the doctors
- 24:06Speaker 1: what happened, you know. So that's it was really like
- 24:12Speaker 1: God telling me to go upstairs to your child right now.
- 24:15Speaker 2: And it was after a long day.
- 24:17Speaker 1: I was at training all day and I could have
- 24:20Speaker 1: just looked at the phone and be like, oh, so'll
- 24:21Speaker 1: go back to bed, but something told me to go upstairs.
- 24:25Speaker 2: Wow.
- 24:25Speaker 4: Wow, I have like goosebumps all over my entire.
- 24:28Speaker 2: Body right now. Yeah, I do too. Actually, I always
- 24:31Speaker 2: brought back to that moment. It's terrified. It was terrifying.
- 24:34Speaker 3: Yeah, of course. And I if I was you, I mean,
- 24:37Speaker 3: let's talk about control. Like I can't even tell you,
- 24:40Speaker 3: like how I would not live with like my phone
- 24:42Speaker 3: and that camera plastered in my hand for the rest
- 24:45Speaker 3: of my Oh my gosh.
- 24:47Speaker 2: Tell me about it. I'm always going and checking on
- 24:49Speaker 2: them all the time.
- 24:50Speaker 3: I remember some of my friends when they became first
- 24:53Speaker 3: time mothers as like most first time mothers to like
- 24:56Speaker 3: you go through that first phase where like you literally
- 24:59Speaker 3: going to their room and just check that they're breathing,
- 25:01Speaker 3: like at least twelve times in the night.
- 25:03Speaker 1: All the time, all the time. I like, if they
- 25:05Speaker 1: have they're like sleeping on you. Like I it's you
- 25:09Speaker 1: never stop. Like when I tell you never stop worrying,
- 25:12Speaker 1: you can never stop.
- 25:13Speaker 4: You never stop.
- 25:14Speaker 3: And the other thing to touch on here, I love
- 25:17Speaker 3: what you said about uh starting to teach from home
- 25:20Speaker 3: and pulling out this like twenty fifteen Peloton bike again
- 25:24Speaker 3: another example of like why you're such an interesting and
- 25:26Speaker 3: special person because so many people, I think struggle with
- 25:29Speaker 3: the idea of things need to be a certain way
- 25:32Speaker 3: or things need to be perfect, and for you to
- 25:35Speaker 3: have absolutely no.
- 25:36Speaker 4: Experience trying to do something like this with the Instagram.
- 25:39Speaker 3: Nevertheless, to do something like this with this bike that
- 25:41Speaker 3: like seems to have been collecting a little bit of
- 25:43Speaker 3: dust at home, What a cool thing for you to do.
- 25:46Speaker 2: It was.
- 25:46Speaker 1: It was awesome and you know, just stepping into doing
- 25:51Speaker 1: something different, and you know, I feel like everything in
- 25:54Speaker 1: life happens for a reason. I had never talked to
- 25:57Speaker 1: the camera before, and I've never talked to a room
- 26:00Speaker 1: with nobody in it, with no energy, and I didn't
- 26:04Speaker 1: know in that moment it was preparing me for what
- 26:07Speaker 1: I do now, teaching, you know, on the tread to
- 26:12Speaker 1: a camera.
- 26:13Speaker 2: Nobody else is in the room but me. You know,
- 26:15Speaker 2: it was preparing me for this moment.
- 26:17Speaker 1: You know, when you look back on things, you're like, man,
- 26:20Speaker 1: I had no idea what I was doing then, but
- 26:23Speaker 1: it prepared me for.
- 26:24Speaker 2: What I'm doing now.
- 26:25Speaker 3: Yeah, So what was going on in your life? I mean,
- 26:28Speaker 3: COVID gestures loosely, but what was going on in your
- 26:32Speaker 3: life when you finally heard from Peloton.
- 26:35Speaker 1: So I was teaching at home, I was homeschooling my kids.
- 26:41Speaker 1: All hell was breaking loose, you know, I was separating
- 26:45Speaker 1: from my partner at the time.
- 26:47Speaker 2: It was literally like all hell was going on in
- 26:52Speaker 2: this house. And then to get that message, it was
- 26:56Speaker 2: I was in awe.
- 26:56Speaker 1: I believe in the power of manifestation, and in the
- 27:00Speaker 1: beginning of COVID, I really sat down to figure out, Okay,
- 27:03Speaker 1: what do I want for my life? And I have
- 27:06Speaker 1: a bunch of post it notes in my manifestation wall
- 27:07Speaker 1: and I have one that said I want to.
- 27:09Speaker 2: Be a Polticone instructor and.
- 27:13Speaker 1: So to get that message, they slid in the DM's girl.
- 27:16Speaker 1: They slid in the DMS and I was like, Man,
- 27:18Speaker 1: is this real? If this person asked for my Social
- 27:20Speaker 1: Security number? I know this is not real, but it
- 27:24Speaker 1: was real.
- 27:24Speaker 2: And I've been in all of this whole process ever since.
- 27:31Speaker 2: You know.
- 27:31Speaker 1: They they reached out and I went for my first
- 27:34Speaker 1: interview and it's been absolutely incredible ever since. I feel
- 27:40Speaker 1: like I've had permanent dimple smiles since that day.
- 27:45Speaker 3: Well, the interesting thing here is that you have been
- 27:48Speaker 3: teaching spin and now you're teaching tread.
- 27:50Speaker 4: Talk to us about that and how that kind of
- 27:52Speaker 4: panned out.
- 27:53Speaker 1: Absolutely, So, you know, they reached out. I'm so excited.
- 27:55Speaker 1: I was like, oh my gosh, I manifested this. Ah,
- 27:58Speaker 1: this is incredible. And you know, the first interview was amazing.
- 28:03Speaker 1: And then they reached out again and they were like, so,
- 28:05Speaker 1: we don't have much room on the bike. We're pretty
- 28:07Speaker 1: at capacity there. What are your thoughts about auditioning for
- 28:12Speaker 1: the tread?
- 28:13Speaker 2: And I and I have one.
- 28:14Speaker 1: I was like, well, I have one I love just
- 28:17Speaker 1: sims and those boot camps.
- 28:18Speaker 2: Baby, I'm here for it, but I've never taught it.
- 28:20Speaker 4: Me too, lady, me too.
- 28:22Speaker 2: It's girl. But I'm like, what okay like? And I
- 28:26Speaker 2: had to go back to that space.
- 28:28Speaker 1: You've done this before, You've walked into rooms that you
- 28:30Speaker 1: didn't know what you were doing, and you've done it.
- 28:34Speaker 1: Go back to that person, and I said, you know what,
- 28:38Speaker 1: I'm going to audition.
- 28:39Speaker 2: I'm going to be me.
- 28:40Speaker 1: I'm going to study my butt off, I'm going to
- 28:43Speaker 1: be totally confident in what I'm doing.
- 28:47Speaker 2: I'm going to get all the credentials that I need
- 28:51Speaker 2: to be certified to.
- 28:52Speaker 1: Be able to do this, and let's go and I'm
- 28:54Speaker 1: going to learn from the best in the industry.
- 28:57Speaker 2: You know.
- 28:57Speaker 1: Yet, were there times where I was like, girl, you
- 28:59Speaker 1: are not vexed. You are not Matt Wilfer's day run marathons.
- 29:03Speaker 1: You've never done that before. I don't even know if
- 29:05Speaker 1: you want to do that. Are you sure you can
- 29:07Speaker 1: do this?
- 29:09Speaker 2: I was absolutely having those moments. But then there was
- 29:12Speaker 2: another time where it was like, here's staying. You are
- 29:15Speaker 2: meant for this.
- 29:16Speaker 1: You your desire to do this is to change lives.
- 29:19Speaker 1: And if it's to do it on a tread, a
- 29:21Speaker 1: bike with some weights, whatever it is, go do that.
- 29:25Speaker 3: Hey, I'm not foreshadowing anything, but you know that that
- 29:28Speaker 3: you know that Jess started doing exactly what you're doing
- 29:31Speaker 3: and then all of a sudden, one day she was
- 29:32Speaker 3: on the bike.
- 29:33Speaker 1: So maybe there's a future now, you know, you know
- 29:35Speaker 1: there's power and manifestation.
- 29:36Speaker 2: I'll tell you that.
- 29:43Speaker 3: Taking a break from today's episode to talk to you
- 29:45Speaker 3: about my sponsor given some love today to my friends

- 31:39Speaker 3: we keep talking about Peloton, because I do know that
- 31:43Speaker 3: there are so many individuals listening to this right now
- 31:47Speaker 3: who dealt with a similar difficulty in their personal lives
- 31:51Speaker 3: during COVID, and that they also separated from their partner
- 31:55Speaker 3: or walked away from a long term relationship. For you,
- 31:59Speaker 3: what would you say was the most difficult part of
- 32:02Speaker 3: that for you and your family.
- 32:05Speaker 2: For me and my family, it was my girls. It
- 32:08Speaker 2: was making sure they were okay. Luckily, we co parent beautifully.
- 32:14Speaker 2: He's a great human being.
- 32:15Speaker 1: But we just came to the realization that this wasn't
- 32:18Speaker 1: it anymore and we wanted to choose happiness. And when
- 32:22Speaker 1: we both were in alignment on that, it was good.
- 32:25Speaker 1: Were there hard days as a single mom? One hundred
- 32:28Speaker 1: and ten thousand percent. Was it worth it?
- 32:32Speaker 2: Yes? Yes, more doors opened for me that I didn't
- 32:37Speaker 2: even know was possible by allowing that one to close.
- 32:42Speaker 1: You know, I made myself small in that relationship. I
- 32:47Speaker 1: would never have believed in myself to be able to
- 32:49Speaker 1: do this, and so it was a necessary step. And
- 32:54Speaker 1: now I am able to really walk and be who
- 32:56Speaker 1: I am, and my daughters are able to see me happy,
- 33:01Speaker 1: They're able to watch me chase after my dreams. They
- 33:04Speaker 1: think I'm Beyonce by the way, as they should.
- 33:10Speaker 2: So, Man, what a great thing?
- 33:12Speaker 4: Do you just have two little mini me's looking up
- 33:14Speaker 4: to you all of the time.
- 33:16Speaker 1: And I watched my mother do it for me. She
- 33:20Speaker 1: was a single mom and kill the male dominated field.
- 33:23Speaker 1: I remember her watching her walking to work in a
- 33:26Speaker 1: power red suit. Like all of these memories I still
- 33:29Speaker 1: have with me and carry with me, and I want
- 33:31Speaker 1: my girls to see that in me and know that
- 33:34Speaker 1: they don't need to stay in a relationship that on
- 33:37Speaker 1: paper looks perfect.
- 33:39Speaker 2: If you're unhappy, you know, life is way too short,
- 33:43Speaker 2: and during COVID, I think we all started to realize that,
- 33:47Speaker 2: and so that would just be my my only one
- 33:51Speaker 2: thing I would want to share is just you know,
- 33:53Speaker 2: life is too short, you know, and if if you
- 33:56Speaker 2: are in agreement and the alignment, that that is what
- 33:59Speaker 2: you need to do, you know, step out on faith.
- 34:02Speaker 2: You know. Is it going to be easy? Absolutely not?
- 34:04Speaker 2: Is it worth it? At least it was for me.
- 34:08Speaker 3: That sentence, like if you are in agreement in alignment,
- 34:10Speaker 3: like it's great that the two of you were, but
- 34:12Speaker 3: sometimes you need to like be very honest with you
- 34:15Speaker 3: about you know, what it is that you need. And
- 34:18Speaker 3: it can be frightening, as you said, absolutely frightening, but
- 34:23Speaker 3: something that your girl says, I uh, I want it
- 34:26Speaker 3: more than I fear it.
- 34:26Speaker 4: Right, So what is it that you're going after.
- 34:30Speaker 3: What is it that like burns that fire inside of
- 34:32Speaker 3: you so that you can go to your next level
- 34:35Speaker 3: of potential.
- 34:36Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 34:36Speaker 3: Absolutely, And it's interesting as well because I hear what
- 34:41Speaker 3: you're saying, like, I shrunk myself so much in that,
- 34:44Speaker 3: and I think that sometimes when you're in the middle
- 34:47Speaker 3: of it, when you're in the thick of it, like
- 34:48Speaker 3: you kind of know that, but you also don't realize
- 34:51Speaker 3: like how much of yourself you're sacrificing in these difficult moments.
- 34:55Speaker 3: And that, truly it's something that you almost have to
- 35:00Speaker 3: go through a difficult time like that, whether it's because
- 35:04Speaker 3: of a relationship or so many other of the hurdles
- 35:06Speaker 3: that we go through in our lives. But it's almost
- 35:09Speaker 3: like by going through these hurdle moments, you learn the
- 35:12Speaker 3: best way to proceed and how maybe not to make
- 35:15Speaker 3: some of those same not the best for you decisions
- 35:18Speaker 3: in the next phase and in the next phase and
- 35:20Speaker 3: in the next chapter.
- 35:21Speaker 2: Right.
- 35:22Speaker 1: Absolutely, I truly believe there's no such thing as failure
- 35:24Speaker 1: in life. It's a lesson and you take that with
- 35:28Speaker 1: you through every challenge that you go through. And you know,
- 35:32Speaker 1: for me, it was really being okay with it and
- 35:36Speaker 1: then being open to what happens next. I still don't know,
- 35:40Speaker 1: you know, I'm still you know, definitely walking through it all.
- 35:44Speaker 1: But I would not be able to be the person
- 35:45Speaker 1: I am today if I if I stay stuck, you know,
- 35:50Speaker 1: and I would look at myself in the mirror and
- 35:53Speaker 1: all the things that I'm coaching and telling everybody else
- 35:57Speaker 1: to do. It was like I had a moment in
- 35:59Speaker 1: the mirror, Karsten, you need to walk the walk too,
- 36:03Speaker 1: you know, and be brave enough to do that.
- 36:06Speaker 4: And it's hard, it's hard to like take your own advice.
- 36:09Speaker 3: Was not a marriage, but I remember, like I've been
- 36:11Speaker 3: in you know.
- 36:13Speaker 4: Situations or relationships.
- 36:14Speaker 3: I was in this one particular relationship that was definitely
- 36:18Speaker 3: emotionally abusive, and one day I looked in the mirror
- 36:21Speaker 3: after probably not sleeping for a month really to any
- 36:26Speaker 3: solid amount, and I just looked at myself and I
- 36:29Speaker 3: asked myself.
- 36:29Speaker 4: I was like, are you happy?
- 36:31Speaker 2: Like?
- 36:32Speaker 3: And you need like that moment of just like brutal honesty.
- 36:37Speaker 3: And it's hard as hell, but man, is it like
- 36:39Speaker 3: a game changer.
- 36:41Speaker 2: Game changer, game changer, game changer.
- 36:44Speaker 1: And you know, it makes you stronger throughout it all
- 36:46Speaker 1: so that when you do go through the next thing,
- 36:48Speaker 1: because you are going to go through the next thing, you.
- 36:50Speaker 2: Are prepared for what you will and will not accept.
- 36:54Speaker 1: And I'm so proud of the woman that I see
- 36:57Speaker 1: today because she was not the same woman that she
- 36:59Speaker 1: was five years ago.
- 37:00Speaker 3: Yeah, And I mean also, of course, here COVID playing
- 37:04Speaker 3: such a big role in us doing a lot of
- 37:07Speaker 3: that like inner personal work. So not only like this
- 37:11Speaker 3: crazy global pandemic going on, but you also changing careers,
- 37:16Speaker 3: coming into your own as like this beautiful mother taking
- 37:20Speaker 3: care of two little girls. Did you develop any rituals
- 37:25Speaker 3: or things in your own household that helped you get
- 37:27Speaker 3: through some of these like really difficult moments?
- 37:31Speaker 1: You know, I felt like it was a moment for
- 37:34Speaker 1: us all to be still and really be focused on
- 37:37Speaker 1: what is really important in life. And I know at
- 37:42Speaker 1: that time, I was so focused on my career and
- 37:45Speaker 1: finding out what I wanted to do that you know,
- 37:49Speaker 1: it's always a balancing act, right, But you know, my
- 37:52Speaker 1: time with my children was kind of like this, and
- 37:54Speaker 1: so when COVID hit, you're kind of forced to spend time,
- 38:00Speaker 1: real time with your family. And I started to really
- 38:04Speaker 1: embrace that and focus on that. And you know, we
- 38:08Speaker 1: were going through a difficult time as a family, and
- 38:11Speaker 1: I was grateful for the opportunity to really be there
- 38:15Speaker 1: to love on my kids and know that even though
- 38:18Speaker 1: me and their father are no longer together, there are
- 38:19Speaker 1: still loved and just spend real, meaningful time with them.
- 38:24Speaker 2: I think that was one of the biggest things.
- 38:26Speaker 1: It's not really a ritual, but it was something I
- 38:28Speaker 1: was able to do, really spend intentional time with them.
- 38:32Speaker 1: And now that you know, we're starting to get out
- 38:35Speaker 1: of it, still going back to that time, right and
- 38:38Speaker 1: still being intentional with that.
- 38:40Speaker 2: That was something I needed to learn. You know.
- 38:43Speaker 1: I say everything does not need to be on the
- 38:45Speaker 1: priority list, you know, but they are up there, you know,
- 38:48Speaker 1: right there with it. And sometimes you have to say
- 38:51Speaker 1: no to other things to make that time special and important.
- 38:55Speaker 2: So that's one thing I do hold on to.
- 38:57Speaker 3: The priorities are such an interesting thing, right, because it's
- 38:59Speaker 3: so easy to feel shame from others when you choose
- 39:05Speaker 3: and designate, like what yours are?
- 39:07Speaker 2: Right?
- 39:09Speaker 4: How do you not have.
- 39:11Speaker 3: Guilt or shame about what your priorities are.
- 39:14Speaker 1: It's the power of no girl. I've had to learn
- 39:16Speaker 1: it I had to learn it, the power of no.
- 39:19Speaker 1: You can't do everything in fomo. Yeah you'll have it,
- 39:22Speaker 1: but guess what, the next day, there'll be another opportunity
- 39:25Speaker 1: for you to do it, you know, just for a
- 39:28Speaker 1: peace of mind. At this point, you know you can't
- 39:31Speaker 1: do it all. You know, sometimes you got.
- 39:33Speaker 2: To say no.
- 39:34Speaker 1: You have to say no. I just have to say
- 39:36Speaker 1: no and speak up for yourself and you know, say
- 39:39Speaker 1: this is not going to work for me right now,
- 39:41Speaker 1: maybe sometime down the road, and it's okay, it's okay.
- 39:45Speaker 1: It's I've learned to be okay with that. I don't
- 39:47Speaker 1: need to be at every event, every dinner, every everything.
- 39:52Speaker 2: I don't need to be there. You know.
- 39:54Speaker 1: There's my I have kids. A lot of my friends,
- 39:57Speaker 1: some of the instructors they don't. They all don't have kids,
- 39:59Speaker 1: so they're all, let's go out. I'm like, y'all, I
- 40:02Speaker 1: would love to, but I have to class plan. I
- 40:05Speaker 1: got two kids.
- 40:06Speaker 2: That are going to be in my face at six am.
- 40:09Speaker 2: You know, so there's.
- 40:09Speaker 1: Times like you want to go, you want to like
- 40:12Speaker 1: spend time with them, but like not tonight, maybe when
- 40:16Speaker 1: they were a good day with their daddy.
- 40:21Speaker 3: You know, you mentioned studying your butt off. I know
- 40:23Speaker 3: you're an r RCAT certified run coach. You worked your
- 40:26Speaker 3: butt off to get to a place where you felt
- 40:28Speaker 3: comfortable executing on the tread. What were those first few months?
- 40:32Speaker 3: I know we're four in here, but what were those
- 40:34Speaker 3: first couple of months really.
- 40:35Speaker 2: Like for you? Well?
- 40:36Speaker 1: I was in training for a while and I learned
- 40:40Speaker 1: under Extentry, who is my mentor. She's so smart, and
- 40:44Speaker 1: I would study her, and I would study Matt Whooper's
- 40:47Speaker 1: and I would take Justin's classes and really trying to
- 40:50Speaker 1: figure out how can I bring me to the tread
- 40:54Speaker 1: and not be like anybody else, but really learn this craft.
- 41:01Speaker 1: And it took a lot. It took a lot of
- 41:03Speaker 1: time that we do reviews, and I would be very
- 41:05Speaker 1: critical on myself. I would listen to all the feedback
- 41:09Speaker 1: and then come back two days later and do it.
- 41:11Speaker 2: And so I was studying a lot. I was.
- 41:14Speaker 1: I would be on my Peloton app on my phone,
- 41:17Speaker 1: watching classes, listening to ques, listening to how certain instructors
- 41:21Speaker 1: were different. So I would study a whole like of
- 41:25Speaker 1: a lot. I would take a lot of classes and
- 41:29Speaker 1: then I would study myself. So every time I teach,
- 41:32Speaker 1: even now I'll go back and watch the classes that
- 41:35Speaker 1: I taught and say, ooh, I wouldn't have said that,
- 41:37Speaker 1: or girl, if you say, let's go team one more time.
- 41:40Speaker 1: You know, so there's so many little things that you're
- 41:43Speaker 1: so critical of, but I'll go back and rewatch it.
- 41:46Speaker 1: So I'd still work in progress, and I still go
- 41:49Speaker 1: and watch a lot of my well, I'm doing this
- 41:51Speaker 1: three for thirty one now where I'm running and taking
- 41:54Speaker 1: a bunch of my teammates classes, and so it's been good.
- 41:57Speaker 2: It's a constant, constantly learning.
- 41:59Speaker 3: It's important to do that, right, especially if you ever
- 42:02Speaker 3: want to continue to excel at the thing that like
- 42:04Speaker 3: lights you on fire and that makes you really excited,
- 42:07Speaker 3: then the best way to do that is to, you know,
- 42:10Speaker 3: go back, review, learn from the things that you've done
- 42:14Speaker 3: so that you can then be better in the future.
- 42:16Speaker 3: It's like that's why professional athletes, and you know, I
- 42:19Speaker 3: would argue and say that you are one as well,
- 42:21Speaker 3: Like people that are pros, they go back and they
- 42:25Speaker 3: watch the game footage and it's because hey, if by
- 42:28Speaker 3: doing this we can take a learning so that we
- 42:31Speaker 3: can just do it a little bit differently going forward.
- 42:34Speaker 4: Please, I've spent.
- 42:36Speaker 3: God, I can't even articulate how many hours editing this
- 42:38Speaker 3: show at this point. But I would like to think
- 42:41Speaker 3: that the way that I speak now is very much
- 42:45Speaker 3: different and it was when I started, And now I'm
- 42:49Speaker 3: so cognizant of the ums and the likes and the pauses.
- 42:53Speaker 4: And oh my goodness, thank God for editing.
- 42:56Speaker 2: Man, Yeah, I hear you.
- 42:57Speaker 1: I'll even text yes, or I'll text and they like, hey,
- 43:01Speaker 1: I don't know about that class.
- 43:02Speaker 2: Can you mind taking it and giving feedback? You know,
- 43:04Speaker 2: I love feedback. You know.
- 43:06Speaker 1: I think we're constantly growing and learning, and you know,
- 43:09Speaker 1: I want to keep getting better and better at this
- 43:11Speaker 1: and I really look up to them, and so I
- 43:14Speaker 1: lean on my teammates a lot too.
- 43:16Speaker 3: How do you navigate unsolicited feedback?
- 43:21Speaker 1: You know, I take it all, you know, I listen
- 43:24Speaker 1: to it and I digest it. I try not to
- 43:27Speaker 1: take it personally. It's very easy to be like, oh,
- 43:30Speaker 1: can you believe.
- 43:31Speaker 2: She said this something?
- 43:32Speaker 1: But you know, I really try to not take it
- 43:35Speaker 1: personal and know that they're probably just trying to make
- 43:39Speaker 1: me better or giving me advice. And if I feel
- 43:42Speaker 1: like I'm in agreement with that, then I'll take it
- 43:45Speaker 1: to consideration. It depends on who's giving it also, so
- 43:50Speaker 1: being mindful of that.
- 43:51Speaker 2: You know, everybody loves to have an.
- 43:53Speaker 1: Opinion, so, you know, just making sure you don't take
- 43:57Speaker 1: it personal because very easy to do that.
- 44:01Speaker 2: You think it's like directed right at you.
- 44:04Speaker 1: But you know, I think throughout this whole process, it's
- 44:08Speaker 1: when I first started. So I told myself, embrace all
- 44:12Speaker 1: the feedback that you're going to get. This is a
- 44:14Speaker 1: learning opportunity for you. You've never done this before, be
- 44:19Speaker 1: open to it. And I'm still open to it today,
- 44:22Speaker 1: you know, really am I seek it out more than
- 44:26Speaker 1: I actually get it?
- 44:27Speaker 4: Well?
- 44:27Speaker 3: I think that's probably a highlight, especially, you know, the
- 44:30Speaker 3: peloton effect coming into this space and having an onslought
- 44:35Speaker 3: of new people that are watching so many of the
- 44:38Speaker 3: things that you weren't doing before. With all of these
- 44:41Speaker 3: people watching, how has that transition been like for you?
- 44:46Speaker 1: It's been interesting, you know, but honestly, it has been
- 44:50Speaker 1: so positive. And that's one of the most beautiful things
- 44:53Speaker 1: about this community is they are so supportive, They are
- 44:56Speaker 1: so loving. They like the messages that I get after class,
- 45:00Speaker 1: they have me in tears and then just.
- 45:03Speaker 2: Then be like, oh my gosh, you read it, Oh
- 45:04Speaker 2: my gosh, you responded. I'm like, yeah, this is amazing,
- 45:07Speaker 2: Like you just made my day. And so it goes
- 45:10Speaker 2: back and forth. You know, I feed off of their
- 45:12Speaker 2: energy and you know their love and support for me.
- 45:16Speaker 1: So it's been incredible. Is it a lot sometimes to
- 45:19Speaker 1: take in? Absolutely? But it's been really heartwarming and overwhelming
- 45:26Speaker 1: at times because you're like, man, they really like me.
- 45:30Speaker 4: But it's been good overwhelming at times.
- 45:32Speaker 3: Speaking of that, and I'm sure over the last four
- 45:34Speaker 3: months there have certainly been challenges that come.
- 45:37Speaker 4: Hand in hand with your new job.
- 45:38Speaker 3: But what would you say, perhaps a high has been
- 45:42Speaker 3: and then in turn a low.
- 45:45Speaker 1: Ooh the high for me, you know, I am a
- 45:50Speaker 1: big Beyonce fan, so when they asked me to teach
- 45:53Speaker 1: the Beyonce tread class, it was literally a dream come true.
- 45:57Speaker 2: So that was probably one of my highs.
- 46:00Speaker 4: Girls were probably like, mom.
- 46:01Speaker 2: They watched it, they had it on the TV. They
- 46:05Speaker 2: were so excited. They're like, she's really Beyonce. So that
- 46:10Speaker 2: was probably one of my highs.
- 46:12Speaker 1: I think it's trying not to get so down on
- 46:14Speaker 1: myself when I'm trying to balance it all. It's not easy.
- 46:19Speaker 1: It's not easy being a single mom. It's not easy
- 46:22Speaker 1: having a six and a five year old right now
- 46:24Speaker 1: in a very scary time.
- 46:26Speaker 2: It's not easy to.
- 46:28Speaker 1: Step out on the tread and bring light when some
- 46:32Speaker 1: days you just don't have it, you know, and balancing
- 46:37Speaker 1: all the classes and stuff. So it's a balancing act,
- 46:39Speaker 1: you know. It's really trying to figure out the sweet spot.
- 46:42Speaker 2: I don't know if you ever do, so, it's learning
- 46:44Speaker 2: to balance it all. Everybody asked me, how do you
- 46:46Speaker 2: do it all? Like I don't.
- 46:47Speaker 1: I have a team. It takes a village. You know,
- 46:51Speaker 1: my mom's in town right now.
- 46:52Speaker 2: You know, I lean on a lot of people for help,
- 46:55Speaker 2: for guidance, for support. Just Sims has been my rock
- 46:58Speaker 2: throughout this whole thing. I lean on her all the time.
- 47:01Speaker 1: I'm like, I need five minutes to vent and then
- 47:03Speaker 1: you could tell me I'm crazy, and I'll just.
- 47:05Speaker 2: Be like and then she's like, are you done yet?
- 47:09Speaker 2: And then we'll figure it out and then move on.
- 47:11Speaker 1: So, you know, I don't do it all by myself,
- 47:14Speaker 1: and it's been great having such a supportive team.
- 47:18Speaker 2: And it takes a village at home too.
- 47:19Speaker 4: I think it's really special.
- 47:21Speaker 3: What you said about it's okay to like not pretend
- 47:23Speaker 3: everything is like all roses all the time, because I think,
- 47:26Speaker 3: especially as someone that is at the helm of a community,
- 47:30Speaker 3: it's really important to see that dose of reality. Like
- 47:33Speaker 3: it's more valuable to show up and be like, you know,
- 47:37Speaker 3: I am going through it today. And if you are too,
- 47:40Speaker 3: like this is our opportunity to do X y Z,
- 47:42Speaker 3: then be like, I am so stellar all of.
- 47:46Speaker 1: The time, absolutely mad. I call myself the hot Mess
- 47:49Speaker 1: Express on the trip, and people resonate with that. They
- 47:52Speaker 1: were like, thank you for saying that. I will never
- 47:56Speaker 1: claim to be perfect. I always say it as the perfection.
- 47:59Speaker 2: Is wearing as hell. If we were all perfect, how
- 48:01Speaker 2: born life be?
- 48:02Speaker 4: Amen? Amen?
- 48:03Speaker 3: Okay, So at this point in the conversation, I love
- 48:07Speaker 3: to reflect a little bit about what it is that
- 48:10Speaker 3: people see when they go to your Instagram right now,
- 48:13Speaker 3: some of those your Instagram page, they see a woman
- 48:16Speaker 3: with almost thirty six thousand followers. You're a one Peloton instructor,
- 48:20Speaker 3: an r a certified run coach sort of right, so
- 48:23Speaker 3: cycling coach, a mother.
- 48:25Speaker 4: When you look in the mirror, what is it that
- 48:27Speaker 4: you see looking back at you?
- 48:30Speaker 1: I see a strong, black independent woman that is unapologetically her,
- 48:39Speaker 1: that's chasing after her dreams, that is an independent mother
- 48:44Speaker 1: that is.
- 48:48Speaker 2: Proud of herself. I really am.
- 48:51Speaker 1: It's beautiful, I really am. And it's also a work
- 48:55Speaker 1: in progress at the same time. You could be a
- 48:58Speaker 1: work in progress and be exactly who you want to
- 49:01Speaker 1: be at the same time.
- 49:02Speaker 2: And that's who I see in the mirror when I
- 49:06Speaker 2: look there.
- 49:07Speaker 3: Aside from fitness, what would you say your outlets have
- 49:09Speaker 3: been over the last couple of years?
- 49:13Speaker 1: Aside from fitness, what would my outlets have been? I
- 49:17Speaker 1: love my village. I have a mom gang of women
- 49:22Speaker 1: that we have those hard belly laughs and we'll have
- 49:25Speaker 1: a bottle of wine and.
- 49:27Speaker 2: We'll just be silly.
- 49:28Speaker 1: I think it's moments like that where you could just
- 49:31Speaker 1: unwind and take off and be who you are and
- 49:34Speaker 1: know that you.
- 49:35Speaker 2: Don't have to be, you know, politically correct at this moment.
- 49:39Speaker 2: You can just have a good time with your girls
- 49:41Speaker 2: and just relax.
- 49:44Speaker 1: And not move your body because now I like to sit,
- 49:47Speaker 1: you know, when I'm not working. It's sitting is good.
- 49:49Speaker 1: Sitting is good. So I think it's those moments. I
- 49:53Speaker 1: think it's it's spending real time with my kids. I'm
- 49:58Speaker 1: in awe of them every day and doing homework with them.
- 50:01Speaker 2: You know, some people say it's stressful. I find joy
- 50:04Speaker 2: in it. So I think it's those moments that you know,
- 50:06Speaker 2: I cherish as well.
- 50:08Speaker 3: What would you say the best piece of advice has
- 50:10Speaker 3: been for you over the last couple of years, going
- 50:13Speaker 3: through the thick of it with all of this transition
- 50:15Speaker 3: for you and your girls and your family.
- 50:18Speaker 1: It's being okay with fear facing fear head on, getting
- 50:22Speaker 1: comfortable and the uncomfortable. There's a lot of uncertainty right now,
- 50:28Speaker 1: but I really believe if you have something on your heart,
- 50:30Speaker 1: you've been called, created and destined to go after it.
- 50:33Speaker 2: And that has been how I've.
- 50:36Speaker 1: Moved over the last three years, and it's it's really
- 50:39Speaker 1: worked out in my favor.
- 50:40Speaker 2: Is it easy? No? But has it been worth it? Absolutely?
- 50:43Speaker 4: What excites you right now?
- 50:46Speaker 1: I love doing what I'm doing, Like it's really like
- 50:49Speaker 1: I'm excited to go get on the tread and run

- 51:06Speaker 2: love wholeheartedly what I do.
- 51:09Speaker 1: I love playlisting and running to music and inspiring and motivating,
- 51:14Speaker 1: and then getting on live after and hearing all the
- 51:17Speaker 1: feedback and chatting with the members. It just really feels
- 51:21Speaker 1: and warms my heart. And that's how I know I'm
- 51:23Speaker 1: walking in purpose. You know I would do it for
- 51:26Speaker 1: Listen Peleton, I'm not gonna do it for free, but

- 51:39Speaker 2: truly enjoy what I do every day.
- 51:41Speaker 4: Winding it down now, my friend, Okay, right now.
- 51:45Speaker 3: You have an opportunity, looking back on that really hard time,
- 51:50Speaker 3: back to back miscarriages. You have an opportunity right now
- 51:53Speaker 3: to offer that woman a piece of advice going through
- 51:58Speaker 3: those hurdle moments.
- 51:59Speaker 4: What do you tell her?
- 52:02Speaker 1: What do I tell her? I tell her to keep
- 52:07Speaker 1: your eyes open. It may be very dark where you're at,
- 52:11Speaker 1: but keep your eyes open, keep the faith, keep hope.
- 52:16Speaker 2: Find something that brings you joy.
- 52:18Speaker 1: It may be hard, it may be difficult, but find
- 52:20Speaker 1: that one thing and hold on to it and cling
- 52:23Speaker 1: to it.
- 52:24Speaker 2: There's a lesson to be learned in this moment.
- 52:26Speaker 1: So keep your eyes open and be aware of it,
- 52:29Speaker 1: and once you find it, hold on to it.
