- 0:33I'm so drunk. Welcome back to a handful of a
- 0:44knife. Internet's, number one Doctor
- 0:47Who comments reporter last about my Welsh accent which is going
- 0:52to be hearing a lot more of you. In this episode, I'm still went
- 0:56by our host for every evening, mr.
- 0:59Joe thought I was you, hello. I'm very pleased to be here.
- 1:03Thank you for having me. Yes.
- 1:05And I'm very pleased. Also be.
- 1:07Yeah, had here talking One of my favorite periods of Doctor Who
- 1:13series 1 and Christopher Eccleston.
- 1:16Episode young quiet day that one jump start.
- 1:23Let's see if it's safe stalking. You the, we both come into this
- 1:28era very differently because obviously you're older than
- 1:32myself. So you've obviously have a lot
- 1:34more experience in the classic series.
- 1:37Yes. When we rebuild.
- 1:39I'm gonna be bringing both of you back.
- 1:42What were you thinking about a bit?
- 1:46But you're worried about their attitudes for the historical
- 1:49stories and what did you think they were going to look like?
- 1:53I wasn't even sure they were going to do historical stories
- 1:57if I'm honest with you. And to date my biggest
- 2:04disappointment with the historicals and I think they've
- 2:07been some Sterling like, a pseudo story for stories.
- 2:11Rosa thing was of the Punjab fires of Pompeii.
- 2:14This is that they always feel the need to put in US, science,
- 2:20fiction element and some of my favorite Doctor, Who stories are
- 2:24those classic William Hartnell? Pure historical stories and I
- 2:27think they absolutely could do it now.
- 2:30But they just It's okay, you know, series one is definitely
- 2:34a, it's a testing ground. I think for a lot of what's come
- 2:39before, what is to come? And obviously, they're never
- 2:43gonna do demons of the Punjab, or, or Rose, you know, if you
- 2:49remember, obviously Rose, they not only have quite an accurate
- 2:54depiction of that time period to the extent that they use the
- 2:59n-word. You know, you're never gonna be
- 3:01used. N-word in 2005.
- 3:04You a doctor? Yeah, well only you know looking
- 3:08at some of the big finish to install it comes you may never
- 3:11come again. The peaceful zoom, mastica on
- 3:14Saturday night, you know point I'm telling what a shame though
- 3:18that such a good story to peacefully Massacre, it's really
- 3:21riveting but I simply saying it's a quite a dull, isn't it?
- 3:25And I think that this, yeah, and we're going for family audience,
- 3:28which means a monster in it. Yeah.
- 3:31I think the kids, you know, but you know, a lot of people saying
- 3:36that if you look at, if you run into a sort of secondary school
- 3:41history class and Alston, what sort of topics are learning
- 3:46about history. They might save you, you know,
- 3:51the Victorian mirror World War 2 or the 1980s, which you
- 3:56obviously have a free historical periods.
- 3:58This is one consensus. Yeah.
- 4:00Because Look at inside the ladybird because historicals
- 4:10model section, B, and all that. That's just Chuck a bit about
- 4:17where this comes from, wasn't particularly, obviously this is
- 4:20hand. It's Mark Gatiss.
- 4:23Not see, you've been on a Dipper, the mortise on with the
- 4:27lots of Mobile Share words inhibit Onyx, I'm doing What to
- 4:32soon as well? Oh good.
- 4:34That's another one that's obscene and interesting
- 4:38historical period. I guess why are you guess what
- 4:41else? We called it the other day, but
- 4:43that's what experiment. And that's quite what a stupid.
- 4:51What are your opinions on? Campus is sort of General over
- 4:55and his approach to doctor. I love that word.
- 5:02Average if I'm honest I think if you look at the stories he wrote
- 5:07across the new series, you've got a couple of above-average
- 5:14stories. Like the unquiet Dead, the
- 5:15Crimson Horror. You've got a lot of middling
- 5:18stuff like night terrors and Cold War and then you've got a
- 5:23couple of stinkers like sleep, no more.
- 5:29With infant sleeping. I'm always probably have at
- 5:31least one record one, but it's also the one that's most out of
- 5:36his wheelhouse all set. Yeah.
- 5:38And most experimental. Yeah, the only two of his that
- 5:42on historical that and night terrors and obviously there are
- 5:47two. But most people probably put on
- 5:50the bottom for him. Yeah, because I think when it is
- 5:56sometimes say more cat, is it. Bit like the clinic in pounds,
- 6:01you know, about the who go on, in the sense that some Mabel of
- 6:06them, were probably claim to be the most Innovative of artists,
- 6:11but they're quite like a bit post more than in their
- 6:15sensibilities, and they wear their influences almost asleep.
- 6:21So, I'll see, you can't see him. I will be, you know, Kung Fu
- 6:24movies and westerns. One of them is that it You know,
- 6:30Nigel kneale and Victoria and Doctor Who he loves doctor.
- 6:36Yeah, yeah. I did.
- 6:39You know what? I feel like with the unquiet
- 6:41dead, he leans into his strength.
- 6:43This is very sort of, I don't know if you ever saw the league
- 6:46of gentlemen, Christmas special, and it happens a lot of
- 6:48atmosphere to it. Sounds spooky spectral, kind of
- 6:52atmosphere to it. And this is what he does, best
- 6:55this kind of and that's why I think the Crimson Horror is is
- 6:57under the best because that's kind Ghoulish and you know,
- 7:01really, really fun as well. I think I just half the time.
- 7:05He's got a good premise, like the Queen's coronation and the
- 7:09wire, or yeah, the little boy and the dollhouse and things
- 7:16like that. I don't know what happens, like
- 7:21for somebody who loves Doctor Who as much as he does.
- 7:24He struggles very often to write memorable Doctor Who Ooh, yeah,
- 7:30that's income. You know, he he clears up MMF
- 7:35import. The strength of this one is that
- 7:38if his might be a Zone me, go wherever doing it on television.
- 7:43They didn't know whether it's going to this series, two more
- 7:46free from if else. So we've had basically his whole
- 7:50life to come up with a doctor who story, maybe you could put
- 7:54on the television screen. Yeah, and I would say you mount
- 8:00the last one we did. Beautiful structure here and I
- 8:04did, which feels a lot like the classic series addressing
- 8:11themes. That the museum is my pickup and
- 8:14this feels like the inverse of that.
- 8:16But yeah this one's stories I think it's the one that feels
- 8:21the most like a classic. Oh that is that's a great
- 8:27observation. Goddamn it better or worse?
- 8:34Well, you got your, the thing we talked about destruction doing
- 8:37way that heart of the TARDIS, and all of that, and they dealt
- 8:39with that in the new series. Now, a lot of well, where's your
- 8:43right is, this is definitely a pseudo historical.
- 8:46This could have been in the classic series, couldn't it?
- 8:49It definitely, I mean, you could put no common survival them and
- 8:54I've been McCoy - yeah. This, this Aries is where you
- 9:04stepped into doctor, isn't it series 1?
- 9:07Yes. So 2005, I was 9 years old could
- 9:12be the math on that and so I remember Christopher Eccleston
- 9:19new BBC interview that purple mountain shot and it is
- 9:24something along the lines will be about this show is being
- 9:27aimed 8 for 12 year olds to all of them you know your pets where
- 9:31your bacon Fans, it's not easy being nine, but Dad, it's all of
- 9:37them are Pertwee and bacon fan itself.
- 9:39So I see I have that knowledge. And yeah, I gravitated towards
- 9:45it and for those, you know, three months or so, in 2005, I
- 9:51left from to it. And I think my reactions to
- 9:55still is one quite different if I think about that.
- 9:59Hey, so they 9 10 years old. Maybe you can fool a little, and
- 10:04I think one of the biggest things me was in the Summer.
- 10:082005 54 series one we moved house.
- 10:13So behalf of wisdom on my life with left the house.
- 10:17But because of that, that meant the place, you know,
- 10:23environment, I want fear. He's won him was completely
- 10:27different to the environment. I watch the Christmas Invasion
- 10:31on words. Memories are completely
- 10:36different from my initial memories of every other top
- 10:39himself, is there a comfort to watching these then in the house
- 10:43that he used to live in? Yeah, I can sort of picture
- 10:47myself. What do you mean?
- 10:49He's and like, milk, get him off the stove.
- 10:53Blame allowed in sort of scooch him, a little bit closest of the
- 10:56Telly, this'll take him, what's going on and you, you had those
- 11:01memories. As of your first experiences
- 11:04with Sham that were always going to be different.
- 11:07Because you're stepping into a new world actually is spot-on
- 11:13with me as well. Like those first couple of vhss
- 11:16with my first experiences or classic who was those edited
- 11:21together, VHS is Terror of the zygons deaths the diet for
- 11:25things like that and I can actually see myself, I would
- 11:29have been about 12 Eleven or twelve Sittin like at my mum's
- 11:38knee. Absolutely terrified in the dark
- 11:41like hugging her legs as sister Lamont, with a blood running
- 11:46down her arms and Terror of the zygons are.
- 11:48I can see myself in that room watching that and the fear and
- 11:51the excitement of watching this, this show for the first time
- 11:54that felt so adult to me. Yeah, you're absolutely right.
- 11:59Yeah. Hey, Manny and third because of
- 12:02that That every single one of these episodes.
- 12:04I had that sort of special memory of.
- 12:09And this one was just one, I levitated feel a bit more
- 12:13because obviously it's just Oracle.
- 12:16So before this, you have all zeros in the end of the world
- 12:21and I think they are a bit more, you know, aliens and you know,
- 12:27the robots and spaceships, they are what Doctor Who is being
- 12:31sold on. The kids and the probably not
- 12:35being sold on on this quite as much, because they're Michael
- 12:39Charles, Dickens, you know, all them times.
- 12:43You know, what keeps going to make of it?
- 12:46Yeah, there never was a sky with its with diet.
- 12:49They never would, this never would have been the first
- 12:51Doctor, Who story? No, and you must have some, I
- 12:56said this is a patent. The first swill forestall is
- 13:00that leash? You know what?
- 13:02Someday Future Past back to present day, to sort of see the
- 13:08ramifications of those his life and how the people in their life
- 13:13of moved on and you get that again with you.
- 13:18No more further all of the depositions experiment looking
- 13:22at how her lots me bum. She's had, you know, quiz lock
- 13:26and Shakespeare clothing, and the first McDonald him.
- 13:31Well, you know, It was like the way up to you man.
- 13:36Even series does Evan, you know, you can the reactions.
- 13:42I think some of the best parts of the magnets in the UK, see
- 13:46him. So he has and, and Y NG or
- 13:50dealing with some stuff that they've Left Behind.
- 13:52Yeah, fucking them in this series, one is definitely
- 13:55setting the precedent. For instance, God confess
- 13:59something to you other Secret. Love for writing from the UK.
- 14:04I think it's massively underrated.
- 14:06Campers hell is probably movie, but I just find it so
- 14:10entertaining. I feel his children was right
- 14:12more episodes like that. I'd be in heaven.
- 14:15Yeah, I mean I know is we've got the midst of a serious with
- 14:19obviously the ramifications of Grace not being merely Moreland
- 14:24and obviously having to bring the doctor in the yazd is
- 14:27families households on seeing that interaction with the
- 14:31goofiness. You know, John's boy, I've been
- 14:34slacking people to am influenced, but this episode I
- 14:39tell you it, it shows different hats to like episode 1, episode
- 14:442, doesn't it? Because it is a little more
- 14:45cerebral because there's a kind of moral dilemma in this
- 14:49episode. So I think it's a bit more a
- 14:51doll, and it has some nice hard-hitting, dialogue between
- 14:56the doctor and Rose in those scenes.
- 14:58Yeah, it's Rend scarier as well. This is a You see someone have
- 15:04their necks snapped in this episode.
- 15:06Yes, a multiple times actually, and yeah, you're right.
- 15:10You know, it trusts reviewers a little bit more because
- 15:13obviously, it's the first episode is that is one of the
- 15:18very few knew, whose thoughts are considering called, but
- 15:22neither starts nor ends with the Tardis team.
- 15:27They'll see both start a Min in Victorian London, so you've
- 15:32done. Book him of the Doctor and Rose
- 15:35giveaway. If you're gonna, um, Simon
- 15:37callow, you may as well start and end the episode with him.
- 15:40Exactly a group of squeeze as much footage out.
- 15:42And as you can, The word. Sorry continue.
- 15:55Yeah, you know those is the introduction point is the pilot,
- 16:01it's the please, you know trust us.
- 16:03We know we're doing the end of the world is getting people used
- 16:09to write. This is what Doctor Who is?
- 16:11It's not going to be those week. It's going to be something else.
- 16:17And being quiet it is, he's a bit history and you know with
- 16:23with them you're in for the Lord.
- 16:28Yeah. It's the confirmation method.
- 16:29So does. What?
- 16:30He is the full gamut of what we're gonna be doing.
- 16:34Wow. Shall we step into the snow and
- 16:38face the ghosts? Or I shall get there.
- 16:44Okie dokie. Well, if you care to count as
- 16:46in, Yes. Okay with she'll start in 5 4. 3
- 16:542 1. Yeah.
- 16:59Mr. Sneed for shame. Yes cold.
- 17:03Open with Jessica's bit. Confused by him 2004.
- 17:07I was worried but I missed it. It's quite nice because you get
- 17:12a cliffhanger, don't you? We've come back to think.
- 17:15This guy has been that David Tennant.
- 17:18Tell me a little bit. I mean, I remember watching this
- 17:22and thinking, my God, this is a bit strong in this first scene.
- 17:28Yeah, they're both women and I love mr.
- 17:33Sneed right, the guy that plays. I've seen him in other things as
- 17:36well and I think he is Welsh. He is playing like your Cod
- 17:41Welshman though, isn't he? Oh, yeah.
- 18:17But I know you mean coming through the air.
- 18:20Yeah, I love that line. You know, we've got another one,
- 18:24it's just a simple matter. This has been going on for a
- 18:27while pass. This shot here right where it's
- 18:31it. I was past the gas light and
- 18:34keeps going until we're right down her throat.
- 18:36We're all the girls. I've been initially planned on
- 18:39doing that and having the having the vortex going on, man.
- 18:44What today's budget? Well, they did.
- 18:50Didn't they in Ascension assignment?
- 18:52Remember, they went into the are.
- 18:53Yeah. Yeah, you know, I get, I'll get
- 18:59hints of Shaun of the Dead with that.
- 19:02That old woman zombie going about killing people, you know,
- 19:05because there's no woman. Did you know, the party was
- 19:17originally penciled in for Oh, I can't remember but it's probably
- 19:23still mad. But yes, that's what I mean.
- 19:29Oh okay. Jack these scenes.
- 19:31These early scenes right in unquiet dead.
- 19:34And this all these two around the console died where you want
- 19:38to go past or the future. Yeah, I think that's just a
- 19:41magic of the TARDIS better than practically any other Doctor Who
- 19:44story? Yeah.
- 19:46And that idea of what you've done the future mellotts do you
- 19:50know we're not going to do the same thing but it does as well
- 19:54it does make the Tardis feel like Like a Fairground ride
- 20:00doesn't is like, right. We're going to try this ride and
- 20:03then we're going to try that ride.
- 20:04And it's kind of boiling it down pretty simply.
- 20:07But in a way that a family audience can just get like that,
- 20:11you know, yeah, I mean, it took from jolts a bit like a
- 20:15Fairground ride them and we sort of see it but violently shaken.
- 20:20Do you think it's unfair of me to say?
- 20:22Because I do think this that Russell T Davies remembers in.
- 20:28I think in pretty much every episode that he put out the
- 20:31daughter who was for a family audience.
- 20:33So for adults, it needs to be intelligent, it needs to be
- 20:38something to get your teeth into and maybe a little bit violent.
- 20:41And for kids is needs to be funny and colorful and have
- 20:45excitement in it and things like that.
- 20:46Whereas, I feel like Mafia and chibnall It pushed the white?
- 20:53Yeah, it's okay. Yeah, you know, you could do
- 21:00both, you can mix your and the entertainment, you know, which
- 21:06open this dance. I was always so confused by this
- 21:10green glow in the Thomas. It just wasn't, what do you
- 21:14imagine is? I'm not sure probably some
- 21:18nuclear waste or something. Well there's some did there's a
- 21:24cup of tea that goes down there in a later episode.
- 21:27Remember in Christmas Invasion? Yeah.
- 21:31Can I just say I think Billie Piper looks so beautiful.
- 21:35Oh she's very particular me outfit that they hammer.
- 21:38Don't see in this episode, I'll sleep in knowing it all the
- 21:41time. Other quite, you know, quite
- 21:45what I've been crushing was. Obviously a major little boy
- 21:49looking at is so thin plate. Audience, identification card.
- 21:56Oh that's why this work do I think that's absolutely why this
- 21:59word because I think half the orders were not going on for
- 22:03Doctor Who stories. They were going on roses
- 22:05Journey. Yeah, these directions but
- 22:09doctors described his mother's costumes, or I think someone
- 22:14said that Miss Jane directions word for word but Capaldi gives
- 22:19billion thinnest and you know, do the Doctor Who story that's
- 22:23riffin at the classic Doctor Who story that's riffing on Sharda
- 22:27in Sharda remarks, third, left, or right past the kitchen the
- 22:32other there, you know, it's very kind of lyric.
- 22:35In 2005, only the proper nouns with a moment about shorter.
- 22:40It's obviously it's not wasn't as accessible as it is today.
- 22:44Excuse me, I'm wearing my proper name badge today.
- 22:46Okay. Yeah, that's the Davis and more
- 22:48guesses is all right, right? They are the most proper nerds.
- 22:54You're ever going to meet up. There was a series one.
- 22:58You can't get 5. B, adopted humans than Russell.
- 23:02T. Davies, Mark Gatiss.
- 23:04You know, Steve them off. Hmm, polka now.
- 23:07Yeah, probably report pistol to do that.
- 23:10So, no plan and, you know, Okay, well I got another question for
- 23:17you. Hmm.
- 23:19Where would you rank? Christopher Eccleston the
- 23:23doctor. And what do you think?
- 23:25I mean personally I had the number one but I obviously
- 23:28understand my Seaman's is so hard to divorce than the fact
- 23:32that was my first entire run. But I think is such a great mix
- 23:38of everything. The doctor should be a little
- 23:41bit snarky very small and if every famous The set of new
- 23:46things, completely differently from the rest of us.
- 23:50Yeah, yeah. He's got an intensity to him as
- 23:54well. The, I just think it is a lot.
- 23:57I Can't Take My Eyes Off him. Yeah, I think that's his
- 24:00character actors or backgrounds. May have clearly very invested
- 24:04in what this mole is and what the show is, and sometimes you
- 24:09need an outsider to do. I mean, if you look at that
- 24:13stuff that I don't like Nicholas Meyer does it do not see
- 24:17referent corn and some other country though, fourth one.
- 24:24And there are three of the most highly regarded started and this
- 24:28Cliff smile happily tell you. It's not starting, you just sort
- 24:32of objectively, not sit how to key in familiar.
- 24:37Into the fields, which have questions doing as well.
- 24:41That's a great parallel. Do you know?
- 24:43And I think sometimes when you bring in fresh blood that isn't
- 24:47connected to like Doctor, Who fandom you get with it results
- 24:53because I think you have to be one or the other.
- 24:55I think you have to be a new baby or complete Outsider.
- 24:59Yeah, I'm gonna have to fix. Let's do is probably quite good.
- 25:03I think Julie Gardner wasn't A doctor who fan but she fell in
- 25:08love with the show through making it.
- 25:11Yeah, Phil Collinson was a massive doctor who knows?
- 25:15And so you had and those were the two kind of voices, either
- 25:19side of Russell, T Davies, you know, this one my favorite
- 25:23moments, those Stanford doctor you men there that's outside the
- 25:28Tardis and she goes. I'll know you've done this
- 25:30before. This is my moment and, you know,
- 25:33we're right there with, you know, I'm finishing.
- 25:36Yeah. You've done this before.
- 25:39I've not had a chance to, you know, go outside and see the
- 25:42post and I think that's a great moment.
- 25:47When you step in the snow like that I would completely step in
- 25:49the city or minimum the port of the email, great friends and
- 25:55obviously maybe more if you want but You know, I didn't spot the
- 26:01old woman in the audience, to start off with my I did, I it's
- 26:05a great guest in them. And again, what you said about
- 26:08getting kids involved, it's like, where's Wally for Quantum
- 26:12quality to it? Which they do a similar thing
- 26:15him runs. Yes.
- 26:17Ohh groans never doctors doing this term in a speech and most
- 26:22including that speech. You can see the Tardis in the
- 26:25background and they don't highlight it.
- 26:28It's just in the And I love that moment.
- 26:31It's a cute. Well, I'm sitting there my
- 26:34going, that's the Tardis. So the back that I've spotted
- 26:38it, it's made me feel small. Typically is on.
- 26:41I'm working with what they want me to work with that's coming
- 26:44underneath our work is well, who people really don't raise his
- 26:48Direction and I think there are a lot of moments where he's
- 26:50sloppy but actually that's where he's very strong as well.
- 26:54So it's less. Where's Wally more?
- 26:56Where zombie granny? Yes.
- 26:59Yes. Okay, there's a whole book, you
- 27:02know, to be made out of that. Yeah, they make it a little bit
- 27:05obvious when she starts glowing blue, but you know what?
- 27:11I know, some fabulously creative people, you know, on Twitter
- 27:14that do drawings. I might ask them to make aware
- 27:17zombie granny picture. I think I think I know I Gone on
- 27:29record as saying that I think not always but often Steven
- 27:36Moffat. Wasted incredible like celebrity
- 27:40guest actors people. I don't know where Bill Bailey
- 27:43people like that, even the Like Richard Gere and I don't think
- 27:46he got anything spectacular to do this era.
- 27:50This these four seasons they knew how to deliver great parts
- 27:55to Fantastic actors and what Simon callow does with Chickens
- 27:59here is oh yeah, very handsome. He's the Gateway because he's
- 28:04like an actor who a lot of other actors with the steps instead of
- 28:09be here because it all that is talk to each other and they
- 28:13hear. Oh my God you know Christopher
- 28:16Eccleston and Simon callow and Annette had learned and all
- 28:19these kinds of people didn't talk to him.
- 28:22Really awesome. Yeah, but obviously different
- 28:26celebrities, different Stone there.
- 28:29Since the various age audiences, so they've got Liberties for
- 28:33people of all ages. So that when I was watching Bob
- 28:36during this period, my celebrities weren't, you know,
- 28:40Simon Cowell, and that bad things.
- 28:42Like I was, I was hyped with, you know, Reggie Yates playing
- 28:47Morphers well, that was my idea. You know what?
- 28:56Mine was, Catherine Tate, because I freaking love the
- 28:58Catherine. Tate Watch out.
- 28:59So when I saw her in the Tardis is absolutely in my element.
- 29:04Yeah, but you know, I think without Simon callow, I don't
- 29:07know. You get a Catherine, take a,
- 29:10grant us all come in for a bit. Yeah.
- 29:12Or Kylie Minogue. Yes, definitely.
- 29:17Those came for form here. You think I'd even I was the
- 29:23most like Prestige guess that they've had.
- 29:29My name is Michael gambon's playback, he was beguiled, Derek
- 29:33Jacobi the Jacobi appear in his probably you know talk to Simon
- 29:38kind of yeah I mean Ian McKellen before voice spin you so big I
- 29:43can't even get him on set them and we'll coordinate.
- 29:46That's out. There he is.
- 29:48I mean, actually, interestingly now probably the biggest name in
- 29:51Doctor Who is Karen Gillan, given the movie.
- 29:54She's All David Tennant, you know?
- 29:58Until then they came back and said, stiff.
- 30:00I'll be a pretty big one. You know, there was about a
- 30:04moment ago where they had everyone screaming in the
- 30:08theater and ecosystem goes, are fantastic.
- 30:22Oh, don't you love it is a massive Dickens fanboy.
- 30:29Destruction last time, and one of the things, which Menses to
- 30:33meet you, destruction is an amazing Charles.
- 30:36Dickens left ones, in the Target normalization.
- 30:39Because Bob's Burgers always really weird, you know, they
- 30:43haven't even got any Charles Dickens books in the toilet and
- 30:47Susan's, never even heard the child.
- 30:49If we divide climate means in film percent.
- 30:53Well, the first stop, it isn't like Charles Dickens and then I
- 30:57won't stop the dance. You kind of wonder, which one of
- 31:00them picked up Charles, Dickens? Sorry about that was a fabulous.
- 31:05Pull my last book called Mad Dogs and Englishmen in the
- 31:08eighth doctor range, where we visit the Tardis library.
- 31:11And there's a book that the doctors got into and it's all
- 31:15like, I think like a guy's the universe.
- 31:18I'm going to something like that, and he's literally written
- 31:19in the margins, in different incarnations, arguing with
- 31:23himself, and disagreeing with him safe.
- 31:30Nothing close to kill the. I haven't even used a chemistry
- 31:42between Austin and callow wasn't guaranteed, but it is terrific
- 31:47about cynical person. Stepping up his game because he
- 31:50knows what all you're not. Sperm.
- 31:53One is commenced and in an alien costumes, you know, your papa.
- 31:57No, I genuinely think Jack. In the second half of series 1
- 32:03ecosystems performances are some of the best performances we ever
- 32:07saw as the doctor. Because I think my material gets
- 32:10darker. Yeah you've been miss there's a
- 32:13bit of a wife and son and because obviously I'm sure cuz
- 32:18it'll be issues that he was going for the impact it is which
- 32:23he's been quite public about now as an a that there was going on
- 32:26and he was having creative differences.
- 32:29It's behind the scenes and things like this, you know?
- 32:31It's yeah. But I've been told a lot of his
- 32:33favorite stories. I think he's spoken quite
- 32:37positively about the empty child and Dalek, and Father's Day.
- 32:43What their Politics on this famous ones.
- 32:45He's spoken to you I think is massively.
- 32:50Massively underrated, it's Boomtown.
- 32:54Yes. I mean that's you know and that
- 32:55was written on the floor, you know that was win.
- 32:59Russell T, Davies work that I'm a bad man.
- 33:02That happened a week. And, you know, you know what,
- 33:05Jack the excess poison was it. The excess gas can be an exhaled
- 33:10through the lungs? Yeah, zombies.
- 33:18Yes. Multiple same time.
- 33:23We haven't had the unquiet dead, at this point had way, this is
- 33:26the uncollected. Oh what?
- 33:28What about? You know, Harmon, yeah.
- 33:37No, no, no. Mount the one called member
- 33:53would not thought that yet. Eve Myles obviously cleaner and
- 33:59my porch would, I think she's the own VP of this episode Ivar.
- 34:04Uh, I think she's giving a really delicate, very nuanced
- 34:08performance in this. Yeah, I think she might be
- 34:12better for him if since years important words, there's no sort
- 34:15of, not a fan, a talk to her, but I don't mind.
- 34:19And I think the best of Orchard is really, really good children
- 34:22about. I think is fantastic and some,
- 34:23yeah, but I think she's often written two extremes and she
- 34:28shouting a lot, and you know what I mean?
- 34:30There's no subtlety in her characterization in Torchwood
- 34:33except for a few episodes where as this just shows what she can
- 34:36do with a really solid delicate part.
- 34:39Yeah, but in mind, you know, there's only really five main
- 34:42actors and two of them are who are creative and wonderful, Miss
- 34:45Simon Cowell. And you know, for all the alone
- 34:48and Monster, What I love in a minute is, I'm sorry.
- 34:52Go on the reference to mr. Smith upon the boat Rose.
- 34:59In the back of the taxi. Is it tell you
- 35:13in the end of the world or something like that?
- 35:16It's a few adult references while I think they were kind of
- 35:19test. During the war in series one as
- 35:21well. And it and they and I think as I
- 35:23got more confident as it went along and they brought me Jack.
- 35:26It was bisexual and they had to kiss the dirt.
- 35:28The jewel kisses man, man, man woman at the end of the season,
- 35:32I think synoptic. Yeah, why we love in a minute is
- 35:40there's a sequence between rows and Gwyneth that goes on for a
- 35:44good couple of minutes as I expected, dialogue sequence, and
- 35:48it's all character. It's all about her.
- 35:50And her gift, and that's chilling moment where she looks
- 35:54into roses mind, and sees the future.
- 35:57And then says about the big bad wolf.
- 35:59Well, yeah. And I think that seems the whole
- 36:01episode and this one as well. I suppose.
- 36:07But it's I like this because there is a lot of talk in this
- 36:11and it's smart tools as well. They're talking about a race
- 36:15that is going to inhabit. The cadavers of human beings to
- 36:23survive when you know, that's what thought you should Prime
- 36:28do. It should try Ansel, put a
- 36:30morality tale amongst the adventure and make you think
- 36:35about or what? Don't let the most adults.
- 36:38I've always loved ones and you but you understand both points
- 36:42of view. Like be, yeah.
- 36:46Well, this is obviously so different.
- 36:48She's obviously a human and even through a human she's quite a
- 36:51young one. Yeah.
- 36:53Obviously her perspectives going to be so different.
- 36:55So I'm like I really really like the work of Malcolm Hulk in the
- 37:00Jon Pertwee era but he's absolutely making a point when
- 37:04he's writing a script and you know where he's leading.
- 37:06So whereas what's nice here is you get the doctor's point of
- 37:09view you get roses point of view.
- 37:10And I don't think the episode falls down on either side it
- 37:13says you decide. Yeah, I mean, luckily, there's
- 37:17no matter which one that's right.
- 37:18Because obviously, they didn't even have it.
- 37:21The bodies in the day or they don't get it.
- 37:25And it's another play important scene as well, because it's
- 37:27about Charles is sort of questions of faith and a big
- 37:33theme of lot of the Davis either is people having a crisis of
- 37:38faith and wondering what is the point in their life.
- 37:43Now that they've Audience, what the doctor experiences everyday.
- 37:48You know, they had that Glimpse and they don't know whether they
- 37:51like it or not and it shapes them up, which is obviously a
- 37:56recurring theme throughout his ear that will be for, you know,
- 37:59Jackie toilet. If you know the personification
- 38:02of that scene, but we're getting it here.
- 38:06There's another, there's a, there's certainly a theme in
- 38:09series one, which I remember was criticized as the season was
- 38:12going along that Christopher Eccleston.
- 38:15Dr. Wasn't directly responsible for the conclusion of the story.
- 38:21As the doctor, he wasn't being proactive.
- 38:23Instead he would encourage other people to take an act.
- 38:29And what people do realize is all part of this thing and the
- 38:33rusty Davis does which is a long game is its leading up to that
- 38:36moment in part of the ways where he's got his hands on the thing
- 38:43and he's got to make the choice. Whether to directly like murder
- 38:47everybody, and he does what he's done all season.
- 38:50He says no more than that. Yeah, it was funny.
- 38:54You said about that choice. I think one of the most
- 38:56important things adopted who is still a closed in.
- 39:00If the historical characters, look at the companions, like the
- 39:05companions. Look at the doctor there.
- 39:08This unusual. Don't like being from another
- 39:13time, who knows, more than they should who says more than they
- 39:17should particular, missing obviously grimaces Scandal by
- 39:22what? You know, those is talking
- 39:24about, just as Moses is Scandal. I want the doctors talking about
- 39:29and I think this shows those his journey in becoming more like
- 39:33the doctor which happens throughout all three historical
- 39:38dinner if you got this one, In for this day, she becomes more
- 39:44specifically about the 9th doctor because she persuades her
- 39:48dad to save the day. Mom, and her saving the day
- 39:51itself as the doctors, not there, she has to solve
- 39:54cosplayers the doctor and in the end until she becomes even more
- 40:00like the doctor because she didn't.
- 40:01So I'm companion. Kevin, yeah.
- 40:04And she invites her new compact at the doctor doesn't invite
- 40:07Jack on the Tardis, those it What's her new companion?
- 40:12Onto the Tardis and both I'm addicted to Folklore the doctor.
- 40:17And those are almost equals in that.
- 40:19Yeah, she's down, she's down in the cellar saying.
- 40:24Come on my lady. We're going to get out of here,
- 40:26Paul. You know, and she's being the
- 40:27doctor. And that's what the historical
- 40:30can do is showing. But actually, we might think the
- 40:34doctors discipline but we're closer to the doctor, then these
- 40:39historical account. It is all God's.
- 40:42Another usual podcast. You know what?
- 40:45Honest, no, I should go. I feel like your thoughts have
- 40:49been marinated for a long time. You know.
- 40:51These sporting will tell you what this is a very simple
- 40:59season, isn't it? And I never come away from this
- 41:02season unsatisfied. Yeah, at the big game.
- 41:07It's that theme and capitalization for going
- 41:10Throughout the whole thing, we filled tons, but most of this
- 41:14conversation, which is a shame because it's one of the best
- 41:17teams in the story and in family, obviously, putting Eve
- 41:22Myles and Billie Piper next to each other because they are
- 41:26vehicles to ask women and women if plymouth's.
- 41:31Or in the first episode of Torchwood, she's basically
- 41:35playing the role of rows in runs.
- 41:38I think those two episodes of the way.
- 41:40Very similar in the sense of black women and ordinary person
- 41:45who sees this mysterious bitter Jack, the doctor and it sort of
- 41:51assimilative into their their world.
- 41:54So it's interesting that it's all looked at these two and put
- 41:59them in. But some of the roles, the
- 42:01second episode of Torchwood is called day one and lying Rose
- 42:05going on her first sort of step out into space, Gwen is Exposed
- 42:11to it. Well, I mean, it's a mad sex
- 42:12gasps alien, you know, but you do know me she's exposed to All
- 42:16The Madness of what tortures is going to bring into her life.
- 42:21Yeah. Yeah, and obviously misses him.
- 42:27So persuading when I think this will do what she means to do.
- 42:33You know what, as well as yet. This is definitely slower this
- 42:37episode than what comes later. Even in later, RC Davis Seasons.
- 42:42But certainly anything from Office time on was this is
- 42:45slower paced, I think and it's to its strength is to its Merit.
- 42:50I think Yay, limits because limits the settings and just
- 42:55says, we're gonna let these personalities go off each other.
- 42:59This is the sort of cheap mummery, I attempt to unmask.
- 43:04And if it's a symptom of the earlier, softer Kingdom, if you
- 43:09reference phantasmagoria, which is obviously a Mark Gatiss big
- 43:13finish and that also had a chance did.
- 43:16And there are, there are a lot of strong parallels to
- 43:19phantasmagoria in this. With me, reviewed it for my new
- 43:23big finish YouTube channel, and I felt very strong unquiet dead
- 43:28Vibes when I was at, although obviously that came first, the
- 43:32good that was his big first B image.
- 43:35So that's what. Do you put?
- 43:36One chance, go let me sort. Come up with quite similar
- 43:41things. And he conquered the books as
- 43:44well. He's done it all Mark, exactly
- 43:47evolve show them adopted, Mark Gatiss, with always be someone
- 43:52who had run up some time, being an episode persons.
- 43:57I've heard of Charles. Dickens, that amazing 90 as
- 44:02about what is it about the dead inhabiting cadavers?
- 44:07I do not add with a full line, but it's us some time.
- 44:13Fulfill that for clarity to it. Yeah.
- 44:15It's a very sort of Christopher Benjamin, Henry J, go style
- 44:19performances and this is an amazing shot limits would be at
- 44:25else. Come in over.
- 44:31Pity. We got some yeah.
- 44:35Sorry I've just doing impressions of the gulf a mile
- 44:43about when they turn out to be evil, their voice is a lot more
- 44:46fun. Well, in the morning, what is
- 44:50your opinion from delft? Because obviously I know they've
- 44:53got a lot of controversy I think um, who was he did that with his
- 44:58Lawrence miles who sort of condemn this Boy, for then being
- 45:03quite a sign of what vitriol towards refugees.
- 45:12I mean, yes, you absolutely. You could put that reading into
- 45:17it if you wanted to but you know what?
- 45:19Yeah, look at a lot of Doctor Who and you can put political
- 45:22and troubling readings into a lot of it.
- 45:24And you know what? That's no fun.
- 45:27Yeah. Rubbish.
- 45:43And I think that's because he wasn't invited to come into the
- 45:45series. And he spent a lot of time on
- 45:47his website writing. A lot of clever words about how
- 45:51shit all of this is. Well, guess what?
- 45:53It's still provide a lot of people, a lot of enjoyment
- 45:55Lawrence. So yeah, they're not, you know,
- 45:57it's not miss each other but I just thought, at the time, I
- 46:03remember in the kids now just below love elevation, a is and
- 46:07they just wanna email conquer the world.
- 46:09That's all never even in the same breakfast, like the same.
- 46:12Like that, you know, people that say about the tech taehoon plot
- 46:17with the Third Doctor is, you know, it's got like abortion
- 46:21parallels and the dangers of abortion.
- 46:26What am I talking about adoption?
- 46:29All right now I thought you meant kill the moon, kill the
- 46:32movies, the one? Yes, Hari.
- 46:33Which is about. Yeah, that's that's and that's
- 46:36the parallels. They've been made that and you
- 46:38know what is interesting to give those readings?
- 46:43I think the girls were pretty effective, you know.
- 46:46Yeah, I like the sauce is quite a simple with me, blue means
- 46:50good. That means my bath is very it's
- 46:53very Angels and Demons or like that, that kind of imagery but
- 46:59they're sort of like a bit nebulous on my own a bit
- 47:02unknowable and very subtly tied into the time War Iraq as well
- 47:06that they are, you know? This is all to say that pick
- 47:17some the bit model stuff, if it's like recycling.
- 47:23Yeah, that's a strong line. That isn't it.
- 47:25It's like Recycling. And in a way that's just as dark
- 47:29as dark water and don't cremate me, you know.
- 47:34Yeah, I mean that's a little bit, I don't know.
- 47:37Doctor should necessarily start being elf because obviously
- 47:41that's up to a wide-ranging. Come.
- 47:45Except talk to could do a whole book set with different versions
- 47:51of the afterlife in it, and not need it for one.
- 47:55That would be quite a responsible.
- 47:57Take on it. Wouldn't it to give it a little
- 47:59different readings and then say but there's also Millions more,
- 48:03you know, well it's a big liability come out with
- 48:05different origin stories but Lantus, yeah, we haven't done
- 48:12that. Do that with a proper budget now
- 48:17as well. That would be amazing.
- 48:19Yes, Imagine me underwater Menace with my budget but that
- 48:25that University bubbles. Wow.
- 48:28And then the, all right side monster when we saw the
- 48:32destruction of land Atlantis with just like one, Jabba light
- 48:35pillar falling over. Yeah.
- 48:38Yeah. I've been more so such a creepy
- 48:44setting. It's a baby stranger?
- 48:47Yeah. A lot because multi feet
- 48:50sticking out underneath it. Yeah.
- 48:52That's very legal gentleman. That is none.
- 48:54Crimson Horror. Yeah, that I think that it
- 49:01really shocked me in this was when Snead had his - that,
- 49:06because he's been the comedy character until this point.
- 49:09And I was like, Wow, that's dark.
- 49:11They've taken the who's essentially the comic relief in
- 49:14this episode. Murdered him and then possessed
- 49:17him. Yeah, and it's given quite a
- 49:19threatening performance. Something went against oh, Jack.
- 49:24And you get that lovely. Beautiful moment where they hold
- 49:27hands. Don't they say right?
- 49:29We're going to face this together.
- 49:31Yes. When we get to it, this is a
- 49:33striking visual when it when it comes up, when it's about to
- 49:39make herself before. Yes and but you know, one of the
- 49:42reasons I like those so much is because what about compassion
- 49:48and her, you know, always trying to make sure that people are
- 49:52sort of expected on see in the end of the world.
- 49:55We had. That would be M the pajama
- 49:58tokoto. She has obviously that that
- 50:00conversation Rafael. Oh yeah.
- 50:03Yeah. And obviously, we've had that
- 50:05with Plymouth She's old pals up with Mary Jo, doesn't she?
- 50:12And I went to London. Yeah, I'm obsessed with.
- 50:16I suppose it gets unstuck a little bit with the Dalek in
- 50:20Dollar Tree, once he takes advantage of her doing that.
- 50:27Where's Bruno Langley in that one isn't?
- 50:29It was his name Adam? Yes it shimmers let him simmer
- 50:34them won the advantage of of watching this episode.
- 50:38Is that the end of the world this episode and Father's day or
- 50:43two. The only free without glue my
- 50:45Langley or no claw called young man.
- 50:49Yeah and that is in fact that we haven't had to go there.
- 50:56Yeah no yes so it's needs just been killed and I've had kids
- 51:02what it's quite effectively, chilling performance because you
- 51:07know it's a comedy of character 70s.
- 51:09Determined for zombie, there's no doubt but that the actor is
- 51:14going to handle that tone switch.
- 51:16Well, but I think this actor definitely amazing.
- 51:19I was quite subtle as well as now.
- 51:21I think the makeup was really good.
- 51:22The the the contact lenses. Yeah.
- 51:25Great. And then it's just like That'll
- 51:27sort of under the eye, isn't it? Yeah, that that idea I'm not
- 51:32sure why but ghosts on going off to Charles Dickens of this one.
- 51:37Let's all just about looking fabulous on my them give
- 51:42themselves enough time to run out the back door.
- 51:45Who did you see that young girl sheet of really ghoulish?
- 51:48Yeah, I mean it's, you know, elderly people and children were
- 51:52probably the most effective ones, I think those some B's,
- 51:59some B's leaning up against those bars like that.
- 52:01That's quite The young children. Yeah and it's very
- 52:05claustrophobic but flapped and quite a small space.
- 52:11But ghost comes out the door knocker bit like him Christmas
- 52:14Carol, when Molly, not a knockoff Jack, but Marley's,
- 52:21ghost son and cuddle. Obviously, we have mentioned is
- 52:29quite the expert until seconds, which is probably why they
- 52:33picked him for this adds a bit more authenticity to it, and it
- 52:38does a great way even the Christmas carol.
- 52:41No, he really does. He's clearly loving doing this.
- 52:44Well, he loved it enough to come back for that little cameo in.
- 52:48Yes, it's also. Oh, yeah, of course, of course.
- 52:55And of course, the me place the beam.
- 52:58So I'm going to be doing in this area.
- 53:00So in the gift, yeah him and the person I'm always trying to cast
- 53:07her in everything, Mary, and Martha,
- 53:40The minutes are covered in separate closeup of the two of
- 53:43them holding hands and, you know, people say this moments,
- 53:48only leave start with the temple term as know.
- 53:51I was in before you episodes up to this point, those down, quite
- 53:56there member of the world in all three of them.
- 53:59I think we're that close up shots at the doctor.
- 54:02Move holding hands with different quite a suggestive,
- 54:07like, yes, in Father's Day. When they have the argument, in
- 54:12the flower, that plays out like a breakup scene Between Two
- 54:17Lovers in a soap. It really does.
- 54:20It's written and play that way and perfectly.
- 54:23You know, when you're at the pier, what the idea of holding
- 54:26hands is what very lazy. Yeah.
- 54:31But this is a close up shot. It will begin.
- 54:34Firing pin. Yeah.
- 54:38Yeah. Comfortable know.
- 54:41What's up with her Jesus? What did you feel like when they
- 54:44were smoking? Come the end of the season?
- 54:46I've been good. You know, same think probably.
- 54:53What did you think then? When I reported trying to get
- 54:55into bed with the eleventh doctor?
- 54:57That's a bit much. I think that's all of the boil I
- 55:07think because it's like a gasps creature as there's Nothing to
- 55:11dislocate, actually the CGI held up quite well.
- 55:14Yeah, it does miss it. There's a CGI effect in a couple
- 55:18of minutes which is buns. Not hold water as well.
- 55:21You mean explosion? Yes, those are fake fire.
- 55:27That looks like a Microsoft Windows.
- 55:33I think they use the same one, you know, where Martha's flat
- 55:35goes up in the sound of drums. Yeah, let me fast-forward a
- 55:39little more in the past and that's, you know, your belief or
- 55:43episodes in that series. Like, you know, 42, you know
- 55:48that the leuco sky around, is it something?
- 55:50There's something like fluidic about, isn't it?
- 55:52Looks like water running around. It's really no, yes, yes,
- 55:58there's that. That Farley building's layout of
- 56:03this is no depth to it is. It's just it's just What did you
- 56:12think of that explosion on top of heinrichs in rows?
- 56:16That look better. I thought obviously maybe
- 56:21Jackie. Mmm.
- 56:22Yeah into it. But I think those it's such a
- 56:27different pace to this episode so it's all carries your along
- 56:30them in. Your swept up in it.
- 56:32Yeah. And you are because we had that
- 56:34scene where Rose and Gwyneth got really Kind of close to each
- 56:38other. This ending really impacts is
- 56:41not just somebody sacrificing their life in someone, we really
- 56:44care about, you know, in a shocking way.
- 56:49Yeah. And it's obviously gives you
- 56:51quite a lot of visual information for give you her,
- 56:55you know, lighten the mapped and stuff like that, which you put
- 56:59the pieces together and you don't have quite a dramatic way
- 57:02for to die, that there is a bit staging that that long Han
- 57:08upwards on the law looking very thoughtfully.
- 57:13This term into the next poem, so all the endings Fab as well when
- 57:19he goes off laughing his head off.
- 57:22Yeah, a bit like Scrooge obviously and yes, you read a
- 57:28bit 7. Yeah.
- 57:30Yes. I would I love them at them.
- 57:36You know, we've got obviously Charles confronting the doctor
- 57:39earlier about, you know, the way of life is changed and now he's
- 57:44quite happy with it because it's been like all artists.
- 57:49Like I'm sure there's lots and lots of the babies and more gas
- 57:52is of self. You feel that new spark of life
- 57:57that makes you wanna Create with the course you know, having
- 58:02Russell T, Davies come back now to Doctor Who he's probably felt
- 58:07that that spark again. And you know, I've had my world
- 58:11changed which is pretty big on the course, those kisses.
- 58:17Charles, Dickens, which again, was I think my reaction was
- 58:21quite similar to sort of what how modern is very modern.
- 58:29Yeah, Billy Martin. And you know what, as well II
- 58:35meant to mention earlier, and that is that thing that becomes
- 58:39a cliché in is in the Shakespeare code.
- 58:42And it's in the Agatha Christie episode as well, where you're
- 58:45dropping references to their Works throughout.
- 58:47So it's because I want to talk about a Bleak House.
- 58:52That is what American being morning shows away.
- 59:00What was that be about? That was rubbish, stop it.
- 59:04But yeah. Actors, you know, snapped his
- 59:09job to sell something like that. And, you know, ecosystems olive
- 59:13oil spill, it very quickly and I notice I think there's a twin
- 59:17were there. Question it is got dialogue,
- 59:21it's not quite sure what to do but it's all rattles through it
- 59:24really, really quickly. I think he handles the humor way
- 59:29better than other people say he does.
- 59:31So I think he's a very yeah I think maybe in those maybe take
- 59:36some a bit and I feel I might leave an impression on people, I
- 59:39think people want to send commitments, you know, the dark
- 59:43war that sandwich, you know. Yeah, that is there.
- 59:46But that is way more multifaceted.
- 59:50One of my favorite sequences in the whole of serious one, you
- 59:53know, is in Boomtown. When Marcus Levine's climbing
- 59:56out the window and he does that little eyebrow raised and then
- 1:00:00these are the screwdriver. Like keep bringing it up but
- 1:00:04it's so funny. He's so good.
- 1:00:07So tells them left Delirious, we've found out.
- 1:00:12He's about to die me year. I mean, look at the snow.
- 1:00:15He's kind of like Hollywood scaled.
- 1:00:18They've done. Oh, now we've gone from one end
- 1:00:28to the other wheel comes from a, you know, small character piece
- 1:00:31to the people. You know, they've been exploding
- 1:00:35and planes crashing. And then you met and all of its
- 1:00:39Olsen, you know what, I'm going to say something.
- 1:00:41Now, this quite controversial I adore areas of London and World
- 1:00:47War 3. I think it's, you know, it's a
- 1:00:51very fun one and then it's very different in tone and scope to
- 1:00:56the unquiet dead, which is what you want, top 10 for B.
- 1:00:59And there's another cast member from Fortune.
- 1:01:03Well, no, they reckon that. Don't they, they recognized that
- 1:01:09it was supposed to be but Tosh Tosh covered for him?
- 1:01:13Yeah. would you feel if I That's all.
- 1:01:18Wow I still think it's quirky. But oh so that was completely
- 1:01:24delightful. I think.
- 1:01:26Yeah, it was false. I'm going to ask you to do the
- 1:01:31impossible. Now I'm you and I got a back and
- 1:01:33forth one at a time. Three reasons why somebody
- 1:01:38should go and watch the unquiet dead right now, and you're going
- 1:01:42to go first. I mean well I probably started
- 1:01:49here we would do him free. You want me to talk about both
- 1:01:53of them for this team or with going to split them up?
- 1:01:56Why don't you what? I'll start with Billie Piper
- 1:02:00about the nose is such a great companion.
- 1:02:04She's a sort of doorway and for the series and this is one of my
- 1:02:09favorite, those stories of instruments.
- 1:02:13Beautiful And she's got that compassion and that warm towards
- 1:02:19people. She doesn't know which I think
- 1:02:21is the E force or what Doctor Who should be.
- 1:02:24Ideally, what should Pete and yeah, I think she succeeds in an
- 1:02:31environment which, you know, she has to carry along younger fans
- 1:02:36into historical more than Eve have to carry them into the
- 1:02:41future story. Yeah, okay, so I'm going to tip
- 1:02:48the wink to someone we haven't mentioned at all and it's very
- 1:02:52remiss of ours and that is the director Euros.
- 1:02:54Lytton yes, of course who puts to get like this is technically
- 1:03:00archive first Christmas special and I think it has more visual
- 1:03:06Flair than some of our Christmas specials.
- 1:03:10It's beautiful. It's beautiful to look at.
- 1:03:13It's Pieased, he drives terrific performances out of all the
- 1:03:16actors. I think it's a very accomplished
- 1:03:19very polished piece of work. Yeah, okay.
- 1:03:23Oh gosh. And another though, I'd split
- 1:03:28for this team up now, so I might as well go for a constant, you
- 1:03:33know, my first talked about what to the whole way through and
- 1:03:37probably still to this day, my favorite just because of those
- 1:03:42imbuing memories, I think he gets a lot more lives to his
- 1:03:46performance in this story. You've got the humor both, you
- 1:03:51know, this automatically mean that comes with me and mr.
- 1:03:54Local celebrity - may have fun with the victims lessons is but
- 1:04:02also he sells the gravity of the situation would gives, you know,
- 1:04:06you've met your the nestene Consciousness and now he's met
- 1:04:10the girls, we're piling on you know victims of the time war and
- 1:04:17you know, despite the the girl sort of villainous intentions,
- 1:04:21they are still dictums of the time.
- 1:04:23Well, you know just as much as the The Daleks and darling.
- 1:04:26It's you know and we're seeing all that pressure and that the
- 1:04:30sponsibility Paul on his shoulders and and receiver, you
- 1:04:37know, sometimes you can't eat. He thinks I'm a different plane
- 1:04:43to the list of us and an aesthetically selves that quite
- 1:04:46well in the sense that, you know, he says something like all
- 1:04:51their confuse people's corpses and pissed.
- 1:04:55So I hold him and he sells it and you sort of by about idea
- 1:05:00for the point where it's at man. Tim.
- 1:05:02Oh yeah. Because you know, recycle these
- 1:05:04human bodies which if you think about it, that's quite a crazy
- 1:05:09idea. You know, that's that's not what
- 1:05:11the Cybermen, do, you know? I'm not is just sort of
- 1:05:15suggesting oh, yeah. Minutes to what the Cybermen do
- 1:05:18and youyou saw by that because they're constants, perform, it
- 1:05:23doesn't seem as kind of grisly. He does it actually he almost
- 1:05:27makes it sound like a plausible idea.
- 1:05:30Yeah. And that performance sells it
- 1:05:32because you know, a rest of that there might not be able to get
- 1:05:37that, get that idea across, which is what this episode is
- 1:05:41torment, do that? These were sort of conversations
- 1:05:44but will be had when you travel through time and space and we
- 1:05:50need that code throughout the you some knob usefully.
- 1:05:56I'm going to save my second one. I think the slightly more adult
- 1:06:00content in this is handled very well because it is.
- 1:06:05I think it's kind of, just on the edge of what's acceptable,
- 1:06:08but it stays within, you know, and so it's a point where I'm
- 1:06:12going to go. Wow, that's that's strong.
- 1:06:16Actually, no I think a kid could watch that and they're be okay.
- 1:06:21Yeah, you know, I mean it's a typical more deaths in the same
- 1:06:25place or pushing my limits and seeing what you can get away,
- 1:06:30but you've worked with that being his whole career and will
- 1:06:33continue to do. I'm sure they're down the third
- 1:06:38one, then is a little bit more Tim morning, little bit more
- 1:06:41rounded. I'm gonna go for be the impact
- 1:06:46of Historical stories in the top 10.
- 1:06:50No historical stories or the best way of seeing different
- 1:06:55viewpoints that human history. And so getting increased
- 1:07:01representation, you know, obviously, but not quite as much
- 1:07:05in this episode I suppose. But some, although they are all
- 1:07:10obviously about love than key, they created something in this
- 1:07:16episode because you know, that's what.
- 1:07:17Davis more capitalist someone and Carlo.
- 1:07:22I believe you or slim as well. I think.
- 1:07:26But yeah, you know, you get things like those demons in the
- 1:07:30Punjab and a lot of the actors in those stories might not the
- 1:07:35internet. Would stop to story.
- 1:07:37But oh, because it's, you know, an episode sitting there either.
- 1:07:41Let's get some of some of these sorts of people in which I think
- 1:07:46it is, Damn Collective Costas all register with kids.
- 1:07:53The right is, it's not going to be boring and it's not going to
- 1:07:56be just a history in time and and like I said earlier, you
- 1:08:02know, we see the companions. So we feed the doctor, how you
- 1:08:10sort of can't see the Companions and that is very well,
- 1:08:16demonstrated in the The episode because it gives you a different
- 1:08:20perspective on their Adventures, you know.
- 1:08:22They're not just, we're not just having fun with them.
- 1:08:27They make them incredibly important decisions for a bunch
- 1:08:31of people whose whose lives had already been determined.
- 1:08:37And you know, Charles Dickens its lifespan was already a
- 1:08:42matter of historical fact, before the doctor the most him
- 1:08:47Well, if you look at what the events in 2045 are obviously
- 1:08:51still a bit in flux. As we see we will see that how
- 1:08:55you dance and yes, oh yeah, long story short.
- 1:09:01Yeah sort of uses best articles to push the boundaries and
- 1:09:05storytelling and the the level of consequences.
- 1:09:10But the told his team can have in the world.
- 1:09:14So it's a standard. Doesn't it as well?
- 1:09:16Fullness. Was going.
- 1:09:17Yeah, would definitely. Yeah, my third one then it's
- 1:09:24gonna be because I think if I was talking about her and
- 1:09:27Torchwood or in Broadchurch, even in the stolen Earth, I
- 1:09:33would be less kind because I think e Mi can overstate her
- 1:09:39performance. It's a real example of you less
- 1:09:45is more and she's giving it just a very, very subtle performance
- 1:09:49in this. And I think it's really
- 1:09:51beautiful. I think it's a character that we
- 1:09:52fall in love with very quickly and if it isn't for the hard
- 1:09:56work, she's doing the ending wouldn't have the impact that it
- 1:09:59does. yay, it had been arrested performance, they wouldn't, you
- 1:10:05know, you wouldn't have that sympathy fuck witness and yeah,
- 1:10:11you know I mean Thought you know, maybe she was better to us
- 1:10:19as Gwyneth and obviously she was has its claim on certain.
- 1:10:23Stop is such an off before installing Earth.
- 1:10:26But like you know of all the time slots in the episode, The
- 1:10:31talked with subsidized, Bobby released my, you guys get that
- 1:10:36all relevant? Yeah, yeah I'm obviously we make
- 1:10:40reference to this story. It may make that connection but
- 1:10:47yeah, you kind of forget that she melts.
- 1:10:50I mean, busy Piper kind of looks like my age when if doesn't many
- 1:10:57mores of the not be emails isn't the different woman but she's
- 1:11:02doesn't look 18 or whatever they said.
- 1:11:05When is when it is that performance?
- 1:11:09I think zeldin. Yeah.
- 1:11:11What Well, that was a complete Delight to talk to Jack.
- 1:11:17Yeah, you're very, very good at this.
- 1:11:23I'm sorry. And I will not have humbleness I
- 1:11:25reserve that for myself. What I'd like to do though is to
- 1:11:31is for us to tackle a longer plan.
- 1:11:34Yes. Or if you're willing, Yeah,
- 1:11:37that's what it is, there a particular area?
- 1:11:42But you would want to talk about what is a particular story you'd
- 1:11:46like to talk about? I mean, obviously I don't want
- 1:11:49to but there's a few I haven't done still.
- 1:11:51Oh, I'm not sure. I mean, hmm, that's quite a lot,
- 1:11:56isn't it? It's 21, it's a trick.
- 1:11:59Why was he? What should we determine that
- 1:12:01off camera? Yes to spare buildings.
- 1:12:08But just to say, once again, what a lie is to talk to you and
- 1:12:13yeah, wait to do it again. Ah, thank you, Joe.
- 1:12:16It was the best of times. It was the worst part.
