Latest / Halo Territory: A Los Angeles Angels Podcast / A DILEMMA: Zach Neto continues to befuddle Angels fans with his uneven play
Transcript
- 0:08Speaker 1: Well, hey Angel fans, and welcome back to Halo territory.
- 0:11Speaker 1: I am Mike di Giovanna, former La Times Baseball writer
- 0:14Speaker 1: and host of the show, joined by my regular co
- 0:17Speaker 1: host Mark Trumbo, the former Angel slugger, and we've periodically
- 0:22Speaker 1: on the show we've liked to tap into the psyche
- 0:25Speaker 1: of Angel fans, and for that we have Tyler Rios,
- 0:30Speaker 1: Orange County native and a lifelong Angel fan for all
- 0:34Speaker 1: thirty one years on the planet. Tyler, welcome to the show.
- 0:39Speaker 1: How you doing today?
- 0:41Speaker 2: Doing very well, Very excited to be on the show,
- 0:44Speaker 2: of course talk Angel baseball, and you know, thank you
- 0:47Speaker 2: for having me on the show.
- 0:49Speaker 3: All right, glad to have you, Tyler.
- 0:50Speaker 1: Now, Tyler is not only an Angel fan, he is
- 0:53Speaker 1: a former Orange Coast College middle infielder and currently an
- 0:57Speaker 1: Irvine Valley College assistant coach. So he not only sees
- 1:01Speaker 1: the game through the lens of a fan, he sees
- 1:04Speaker 1: it through the lens of a former player and a coach. Now, Tyler,
- 1:08Speaker 1: a big topic on the show lately has been the
- 1:11Speaker 1: play of Zach Netto, whereas I call him Mark Trumo's
- 1:16Speaker 1: favorite shortstop. You're a huge Neto fan the last few
- 1:20Speaker 1: years you loved that pick coming out of college, but
- 1:23Speaker 1: I understand you're feeling a little more conflicted about your
- 1:27Speaker 1: loyalty to the twenty five year old shortstop these days.
- 1:29Speaker 3: Why is that?
- 1:31Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean, you know, like like we've talked about,
- 1:34Speaker 2: I personally thought that it was a great pick coming
- 1:37Speaker 2: out in twenty twenty two, you know, smaller division I school.
- 1:41Speaker 2: Loved to see some of the videos and what he did.
- 1:44Speaker 2: You know, he really made adjustments to strikes. I know,
- 1:46Speaker 2: he had that big leg kick to start. Everybody was
- 1:48Speaker 2: talking about, you know, not being able to hit, you know,
- 1:51Speaker 2: at the big league level like that. Sure, I mean
- 1:54Speaker 2: in baseball in general, it's hard to hit with a
- 1:56Speaker 2: lake kick, whether you hear you know, major league baseball
- 1:58Speaker 2: or your you know, college baseball, high school baseball.
- 2:02Speaker 4: You know.
- 2:02Speaker 2: But yeah, I thought, you know, he would be able
- 2:04Speaker 2: to make some adjustments, and I think he did, but
- 2:06Speaker 2: you know, kind of getting rushed up early, just like
- 2:09Speaker 2: the Angels have done all the time. You know, you
- 2:12Speaker 2: get that looks to me like he's like, yeah, I've
- 2:15Speaker 2: been here, been on the scene, and now it's you know,
- 2:17Speaker 2: I'm the shortstop. I'm the guy, which unfortunately, you know,
- 2:20Speaker 2: I think Mark touched on it last last podcast, was
- 2:24Speaker 2: you know, Mike Trout's hard nineties down the line are unreal,
- 2:27Speaker 2: you know, as where he's at in his career. If
- 2:29Speaker 2: there's if there's a guy like that that you're going
- 2:31Speaker 2: to look to and see him get down the line
- 2:33Speaker 2: and hustle. You know, there's there's no talent for hustle.
- 2:36Speaker 2: We all know that you get down the line, you
- 2:38Speaker 2: get in the dugout, you get out of the dugout,
- 2:40Speaker 2: you know, you know, walking on the field, you know.
- 2:42Speaker 2: So it's just stuff like that that that we've you know,
- 2:45Speaker 2: been able to see recently, you know a little bit more,
- 2:48Speaker 2: you know, prevalent as the struggles have continued, you know,
- 2:51Speaker 2: and and and we always talk about that you take
- 2:53Speaker 2: your you take your bat out to the to the box,
- 2:56Speaker 2: and you take your field you know that your glove
- 2:58Speaker 2: out to the field, and it looks like he's taking
- 3:00Speaker 2: his bat out to the field, and then you can
- 3:01Speaker 2: kind of see some plays on defense as well that
- 3:04Speaker 2: you know, just should be made and are not. And
- 3:07Speaker 2: you know, being a baseball player myself and being a competitor,
- 3:10Speaker 2: you know, you know that it's it's tough sometimes to
- 3:14Speaker 2: separate the two, but it has to be done in
- 3:16Speaker 2: order for you to to succeed, you know, again at
- 3:19Speaker 2: any level. So a little frustrating there on that end,
- 3:22Speaker 2: you know, seeing some of the displeasure. And I think yesterday,
- 3:25Speaker 2: I don't know if you saw one of his at bats,
- 3:26Speaker 2: but he you know, flew out to left field, threw
- 3:29Speaker 2: the bat off to the side, jogged down the line.
- 3:30Speaker 2: It's just like it's you know, that's as an angel fan,
- 3:34Speaker 2: as a as a you know, baseball head that loves
- 3:37Speaker 2: to watch every part of the game. That's tough to see,
- 3:39Speaker 2: especially on a team that's struggling and you know, are
- 3:42Speaker 2: looking for leaders to to go out there and show
- 3:44Speaker 2: what they can do.
- 3:45Speaker 1: Yeah, we've wondered on this show several times why Mike
- 3:50Speaker 1: Trout is not rubbed off on this kid in a
- 3:52Speaker 1: more positive way. And and Mark, Mark and I talk
- 3:55Speaker 1: about it a lot. Unfortunately, I'm wondering, like, as a fan, Tyler,
- 4:01Speaker 1: are you more frustrated by you know, some of the
- 4:03Speaker 1: perceived lack of hustle some of the the I mean,
- 4:07Speaker 1: we've called it moping.
- 4:08Speaker 3: How just outright moping.
- 4:10Speaker 1: Sometimes that mental attitude seems very surprising for a kid
- 4:14Speaker 1: who last year was really on the rise.
- 4:18Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean, it's it's very frustrating to see that
- 4:20Speaker 2: out of any of the players, right. I mean again,
- 4:22Speaker 2: like I said, I know, it's tough. I know there's
- 4:24Speaker 2: a grueling you know, season that goes into it. But
- 4:27Speaker 2: you know, it is tough, especially like I said, when
- 4:28Speaker 2: you're when you're trying to watch the game and see
- 4:30Speaker 2: stuff like that. I again look at it as like, man,
- 4:34Speaker 2: it's it's part of the game, and it happens again,
- 4:36Speaker 2: I know, these long stretches of of you know, at
- 4:40Speaker 2: bats that don't go our way, they get tough. But
- 4:42Speaker 2: at the same time, it's it is to see it
- 4:44Speaker 2: and then, like you just said, label it as as
- 4:47Speaker 2: moping realistically, Yeah, shoulders down, jogging out, you know, to
- 4:50Speaker 2: whatever base or do whatever it is. It's very frustrating
- 4:53Speaker 2: to see again, especially because you see Mike Chout getting
- 4:55Speaker 2: down the line, you see Wade Mechleer, and I know
- 4:57Speaker 2: those guys are just coming up, you know, in terms
- 4:59Speaker 2: of getting their shots and being able to play. But
- 5:01Speaker 2: you know that's that's again you guys touched upon it.
- 5:04Speaker 2: That's the type of baseball that we'd like to see
- 5:06Speaker 2: in Anaheim. You know, guys putting the ball in play,
- 5:09Speaker 2: first to third, home to home, first to home, any
- 5:13Speaker 2: of those. You know, it's stuff that we've always loved
- 5:15Speaker 2: to see. So it is, yeah, very frustrating to see
- 5:17Speaker 2: the moping and battling body language.
- 5:19Speaker 1: Now Netto is batting two twenty with a seven forty
- 5:22Speaker 1: three ops on the season, thirteen homers, fourteen doubles, thirty
- 5:26Speaker 1: two RBIs the overall numbers not too shabby, but he's
- 5:29Speaker 1: got one hundred and two strikeouts. That's second most in
- 5:33Speaker 1: the major leagues behind Kyle Schwarber is one hundred and six.
- 5:37Speaker 1: He has six four strikeout games, which is not what
- 5:40Speaker 1: you want from a leadoff man. And he's really struggling
- 5:43Speaker 1: in his last twelve games. Let's take a look, uh
- 5:47Speaker 1: one seven for fifty three homers, five RBIs twenty one strikeouts,
- 5:55Speaker 1: three walks.
- 5:58Speaker 3: And this was really surprised me.
- 6:01Speaker 1: I looked on Fangrafts for war rankings and zach Netto
- 6:06Speaker 1: was so far down I could barely get him in
- 6:10Speaker 1: the screenshot zero point nine twentieth among qualifying shortstops. And
- 6:17Speaker 1: you know the other surprising thing, And remember zach Netto
- 6:21Speaker 1: led no he was second in the major leagues in
- 6:25Speaker 1: defensive runs saved last year. He's got minus two defensive
- 6:28Speaker 1: runs saved this year, eighteenth among qualifying shortstops, minus eleven
- 6:32Speaker 1: outs above average twenty first, and an overall defensive rating
- 6:37Speaker 1: of minus three point eight. This question for Mark Trumbo.
- 6:42Speaker 1: Guys have up and down offensive years all the time,
- 6:45Speaker 1: but is it strange to see that much regression defensively
- 6:48Speaker 1: defensively in one year?
- 6:51Speaker 3: Is that a leading question? Mike?
- 6:52Speaker 4: A little bit, A little bit, Mark, I'd like to
- 6:55Speaker 4: hear your opinion a little more. You played shortstop unwilling more.
- 7:02Speaker 4: I have yet to really give you your opinion. You've
- 7:05Speaker 4: teed me up a number of times, which.
- 7:07Speaker 1: I said on the last show, this kid should be
- 7:11Speaker 1: demoted from the leadoff spot.
- 7:13Speaker 3: He should be hitting sixth or seventh. Heck, I you
- 7:16Speaker 3: know we've.
- 7:16Speaker 1: Talked about how you send a message for this kid.
- 7:18Speaker 1: I would drop him down the eighth or ninth if
- 7:20Speaker 1: that's what it took. But I did not play shortstop
- 7:24Speaker 1: above the American Legion level, and I was a rag
- 7:28Speaker 1: armed shortstop at that with no limited range. I am
- 7:32Speaker 1: not going to even get into my shortstop play.
- 7:34Speaker 3: Mark.
- 7:35Speaker 1: You played in the big leagues. You've played defense at
- 7:37Speaker 1: several positions. Played third base for a no hitter. Yeah,
- 7:42Speaker 1: but you played third base, first base. I'm assuming you
- 7:44Speaker 1: didn't have this kind of, you know, topsy turvy seasons defensively.
- 7:49Speaker 3: It does seem kind of strange. I didn't, but I.
- 7:53Speaker 4: Was never rated anywhere near what Zapp is capable of.
- 7:57Speaker 4: True if I have come off like I was some
- 8:01Speaker 4: sort of defensive wizard, I don't think that that's been
- 8:05Speaker 4: the case. I've been very honest about I've tried to
- 8:09Speaker 4: always be a good self evaluator, and I think that's
- 8:11Speaker 4: what any big league player should strive to do a
- 8:15Speaker 4: good job of. It's not always easy. In this case,
- 8:18Speaker 4: I'm really not sure. Last night I messaged you aeronauto
- 8:23Speaker 4: hit ball up the metal ended up going for a
- 8:26Speaker 4: single and if you didn't look very closely, okay, that's fine.
- 8:31Speaker 4: But that was a ball that I believe Nettle could
- 8:34Speaker 4: have doved for and thrown out. And Nolan is not
- 8:39Speaker 4: a fast runner to begin with. He's getting a lot older.
- 8:41Speaker 4: He's one of the slowest runners in the league. And
- 8:44Speaker 4: you want to talk about these defensive run saved. I mean,
- 8:46Speaker 4: but he chose not to dive at all. He just
- 8:48Speaker 4: kind of checked it off and the ball went through. Now,
- 8:50Speaker 4: what do you have thrown him out first?
- 8:51Speaker 3: I don't know.
- 8:52Speaker 4: I think it would have been close, but I didn't
- 8:54Speaker 4: see the effort. And never going to get on somebody
- 8:58Speaker 4: that's scuffling if I see the effort, or I will
- 9:02Speaker 4: try not to. And I think I've done a decent
- 9:04Speaker 4: job of that. It's been Moncada so there, and if
- 9:07Speaker 4: you're not hustling, you're gonna get it. And not in
- 9:11Speaker 4: a way that's it's just that Tyler touched on it.
- 9:14Speaker 4: That's something that you can control if you're unable or
- 9:17Speaker 4: unwilling to give a good effort. I think that's where
- 9:20Speaker 4: not only me as an ex player, but the fans,
- 9:22Speaker 4: you know, they start to wonder what's up, you know,
- 9:24Speaker 4: the big leagues, and this is something that should be standard,
- 9:29Speaker 4: and when you don't see it, it makes you wonder
- 9:32Speaker 4: what's going on out there.
- 9:33Speaker 1: Yeah, we're gonna take a quick break for a word
- 9:35Speaker 1: from our sponsors, and we come back. We'll talk a
- 9:37Speaker 1: little bit more about zach Netto and we'll get into
- 9:39Speaker 1: Monday night's loss to the Diamondbacks.
- 9:41Speaker 3: We'll be right back with more Halo Territory.
- 9:46Speaker 5: Crouch.
- 9:46Speaker 6: You know, I travel all the time and I'm always
- 9:48Speaker 6: looking for possible tickets to go see Evans concerts MLB games.
- 9:52Speaker 5: When I do, I always find Seakeek. Yeah, I'm not
- 9:55Speaker 5: traveling so pretty much. I'm looking for the games all
- 9:58Speaker 5: in my area. I'm gonna look for Orioles game. I'm
- 10:01Speaker 5: gonna look for the Phillies game, the Mets game, the
- 10:04Speaker 5: Yankees game. But you know what else is coming up?
- 10:06Speaker 5: The All Star Game. See Gek's got me.
- 10:09Speaker 6: Hey, you're gonna need them. Tickets for the All Star

- 10:46Speaker 1: And welcome back to Halo Territory with Mark Trumbo, Mike
- 10:49Speaker 1: d Givanna, and Tyler rio Swell. We talked on the
- 10:53Speaker 1: show about what needs to be done, what should be
- 10:56Speaker 1: done to shake this kid up a little bit. I
- 10:58Speaker 1: personally think you should try up and down in the order.
- 11:02Speaker 1: I'm sure you know, Kurtzuzuki or somebody who's maybe Mike Trout,
- 11:05Speaker 1: somebody's taking them aside to speak to him. But starting
- 11:08Speaker 1: to hear a little more rumblings that maybe this kid
- 11:11Speaker 1: needs a little demotion to triple AID.
- 11:12Speaker 3: To to to get them straight.
- 11:15Speaker 1: Is that something either you guys would be in favor
- 11:18Speaker 1: of Tyler? What do you think in this point his career,
- 11:20Speaker 1: he's you know, a third fourth year player. Would that
- 11:24Speaker 1: shake a kid up like this?
- 11:26Speaker 2: I mean you would assume so, right obviously being being
- 11:30Speaker 2: in the at the big league level, you know, for
- 11:33Speaker 2: the amount of time he's been and then you know,
- 11:35Speaker 2: kind of getting a shakedown and push down into you know,
- 11:38Speaker 2: Triple A would be would be tough. Now again, the
- 11:41Speaker 2: only thing I have on this is how is he
- 11:43Speaker 2: going to respond? Is realistically it you know, if you're
- 11:47Speaker 2: pouting on the field and you're you know, doing that
- 11:49Speaker 2: stuff where everybody can see it, I'm sure being demoted
- 11:52Speaker 2: isn't going to make him very happy.
- 11:54Speaker 3: You know.
- 11:54Speaker 2: A lot of guys will basically take that and have it,
- 11:57Speaker 2: you know, be fueled for them, and a lot of
- 12:00Speaker 2: guys are also be pretty upset about it, you know,
- 12:03Speaker 2: I've been here type deal. You know. Again, at the
- 12:07Speaker 2: same time, like Mark was saying, all we're asking is
- 12:11Speaker 2: is to make sure that if you are struggling, you're
- 12:13Speaker 2: putting in the effort, you're getting your hard nineties, you're
- 12:15Speaker 2: working hard, you maybe even get thrown out of a
- 12:18Speaker 2: second base trying to turn you know, a single into
- 12:20Speaker 2: a double because you're trying to maybe do a little
- 12:22Speaker 2: bit more. Again, we're not ever asking guys to do
- 12:25Speaker 2: more that gets them out of their element. But at
- 12:26Speaker 2: the same time, you know again that that effort to
- 12:29Speaker 2: be able to you know, help the team do something
- 12:31Speaker 2: to win, you know, And that's again I would agree
- 12:35Speaker 2: with it. Is it going to go well, Mark.
- 12:40Speaker 1: Would you go that far? They're not going to send
- 12:43Speaker 1: them down now, I don't think they would. But if
- 12:45Speaker 1: you were, though, it's not going to happen.
- 12:47Speaker 4: Yeah, I do think maybe hitting fifth again would be
- 12:53Speaker 4: a good start that went well, it didn't last long.
- 12:56Speaker 4: And the bottom line I mean is hitting leadoff and
- 13:00Speaker 4: off hitters. For as long as I've played the game
- 13:03Speaker 4: and I can remember, one of their main jobs is
- 13:05Speaker 4: to get on base and set the table. To some degree,
- 13:09Speaker 4: his approach at the plate is appears to be driving
- 13:14Speaker 4: himself in every time, as opposed to now. Early in
- 13:18Speaker 4: the year he took a ton of walks. Where that
- 13:19Speaker 4: came from, I don't know if that was to prove
- 13:22Speaker 4: a point to me. It's possible that someone got in
- 13:26Speaker 4: his ear and he has the ability to do it.
- 13:28Speaker 4: At the end of the day. The guy's ridiculously talented.
- 13:31Speaker 4: I mean, he has range for days and incredibly strong arm,
- 13:35Speaker 4: tons of power at the plate. But what's missing is
- 13:38Speaker 4: the consistency. And if you want to earn the respect
- 13:41Speaker 4: of the fans, the players, and the rest of the league,
- 13:44Speaker 4: you do what you can to be consistent and keep
- 13:47Speaker 4: a good attitude.
- 13:48Speaker 3: And if you're you know you're bad. Is not hot.
- 13:50Speaker 4: You know, you helped the team win some games on defense,
- 13:53Speaker 4: but that's that's been sloppy and I've yet to see
- 13:58Speaker 4: anybody on the report inside ask these questions, really really
- 14:03Speaker 4: asked the questions. I know it's been touched on a
- 14:05Speaker 4: little bit, but we haven't heard from Zach to the
- 14:09Speaker 4: extent that I would like to maybe explain what's going
- 14:11Speaker 4: on out there.
- 14:12Speaker 1: Agreed, and for the record, I would not send Zach
- 14:14Speaker 1: Netto down to triple A. I think that's an extreme
- 14:17Speaker 1: move at this point of his career. I'm not saying
- 14:21Speaker 1: you'd lose the player, you know you worry about that year.
- 14:24Speaker 1: That cliche. I think it is a cliche. Maybe it
- 14:27Speaker 1: would light a fire on him.
- 14:28Speaker 3: I don't know.
- 14:29Speaker 1: I think you definitely need to drop him in the order.
- 14:32Speaker 1: Maybe earlier in the season there wasn't a very good
- 14:35Speaker 1: leadoff option, but I think you have a couple options.
- 14:37Speaker 1: You could put Paraz up there, especially against the lefty.
- 14:40Speaker 1: You could put Meckler in the leadoff spot against the righty.
- 14:43Speaker 1: Whatever it is, you drop Netto down the fifth, sixth, seventh,
- 14:47Speaker 1: and you know a lot of managers will do that
- 14:49Speaker 1: to quote unquote ease pressure on a guy. I don't
- 14:51Speaker 1: think that's the problem with Zach. I just think he's
- 14:53Speaker 1: not a leadoff hitter right now at this stage of
- 14:56Speaker 1: his career, so why keep trying to put that square
- 14:59Speaker 1: Pegan in the und on circle. All right, let's turn
- 15:01Speaker 1: our attention to Monday night's game. Tough loss in Arizona.
- 15:05Speaker 1: Games seemed to be going pretty well. Joe Adell with
- 15:08Speaker 1: a nice two strike opposite field double in the first,
- 15:11Speaker 1: Mike Trout with a nice opposite field home run in
- 15:14Speaker 1: the fifth. Scores tied two to two. The top of
- 15:18Speaker 1: the six, denser Guzman hits a two out single and
- 15:22Speaker 1: gets picked off first base. Tyler, you're here a first
- 15:26Speaker 1: base coach at Irvine Valley? Is that your worst nightmare?
- 15:30Speaker 1: Is a first base coach? And and what's going You know,
- 15:32Speaker 1: how does a kid get picked off in that situation?
- 15:34Speaker 1: Because I think the next pitch, Logan o'happy hit a
- 15:37Speaker 1: double into the gap and right center that no doubt
- 15:39Speaker 1: would have scored guzmaneled to go ahead run.
- 15:43Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean, you know, realistically, I on on that end,
- 15:47Speaker 2: it's personally, I think a lack of focus from the
- 15:50Speaker 2: from the runner, from Denzer, you know, when they get
- 15:53Speaker 2: to first base. You know, Mark, I'm pretty sure there
- 15:55Speaker 2: they you know, did the same thing. But I had
- 15:57Speaker 2: the ability to to basically talk to you and learn
- 16:00Speaker 2: from Dino Evil. We were talking about basically coaching first
- 16:03Speaker 2: base and third base, and you know, he was saying
- 16:05Speaker 2: that you you basically have to let them know each
- 16:07Speaker 2: part of the scenario at all times. So so you
- 16:10Speaker 2: make sure that you went over it and then they know.
- 16:12Speaker 3: Right.
- 16:12Speaker 2: So I always tell the first base that the guys
- 16:14Speaker 2: when they get to first base, you know, hey, first off,
- 16:16Speaker 2: you and I are together, so we're going to do
- 16:18Speaker 2: this together. Now we got you know, we go through
- 16:20Speaker 2: out signs, runners, all that, you know, fielders, we do
- 16:23Speaker 2: all that. But yeah, in that sense, you know, you're
- 16:25Speaker 2: you're running over the situation, you know, basically saying, ay ball,
- 16:29Speaker 2: balls put in the gap, you're scoring here, so we
- 16:31Speaker 2: can make sure that we get no picks, no backpicks.
- 16:33Speaker 2: It can't happen, you know, just for that for that reason.
- 16:37Speaker 2: You know, Hopi's been been swinging it well lately. He
- 16:40Speaker 2: you know, gets some backspin on a ball, puts into
- 16:42Speaker 2: the gap. Arizona has some deep gaps, uh, you know,
- 16:45Speaker 2: and Denzer would have basically scored you know, standing up.
- 16:49Speaker 2: You know, so that's it does get tough. But again,
- 16:51Speaker 2: like we've talked about, very young player. I know you
- 16:53Speaker 2: guys touched on the other day about the bunt that
- 16:55Speaker 2: he fielded that he should have just let go on
- 16:57Speaker 2: the line, you know, So those are those are the
- 16:59Speaker 2: the ebbs and flows right of having a young player
- 17:02Speaker 2: out there. Tons of talent, lots of bat speed, quick plays,
- 17:06Speaker 2: great defense. But at the same time, you know you're
- 17:09Speaker 2: gonna have plays that he doesn't make. You're gonna have
- 17:11Speaker 2: times where he, you know, gets picked off in a
- 17:13Speaker 2: big situation like that. Unfortunately that's part of it. But
- 17:17Speaker 2: you're hoping that you know, he learns from those as
- 17:19Speaker 2: well and knows that the next time this we get
- 17:21Speaker 2: into this situation, not so much short enough to lead,
- 17:24Speaker 2: but just again a little bit more, you know, hyper
- 17:26Speaker 2: focus on what's going on here and what can and
- 17:28Speaker 2: can't happen. And you know, I've always thought about you know,
- 17:31Speaker 2: you don't want to think about, oh, I can't get
- 17:33Speaker 2: picked off here, because more often than not, you're gonna.
- 17:35Speaker 3: Get picked off.
- 17:36Speaker 2: But at the same time, you know, understanding what you
- 17:39Speaker 2: have ahead of you, knowing that, yeah, I can't get
- 17:41Speaker 2: picked off because this is a big run here. Let's
- 17:44Speaker 2: make sure that we're a little bit smarter on the
- 17:45Speaker 2: bases ball in the gap, I'm scoring no matter what.
- 17:48Speaker 2: So you know, just just in that regard, you know,
- 17:50Speaker 2: and and again if he does get picked off, you know,
- 17:52Speaker 2: we again, like I said, we're together. But at the
- 17:55Speaker 2: same time, you know, you're you're the athlete and you're
- 17:57Speaker 2: you're the you're the one that needs to make sure
- 17:58Speaker 2: that you see what you see and we get back
- 18:00Speaker 2: when we need to, and you know, so forth, Yeah.
- 18:03Speaker 3: We've seen some good things.
- 18:04Speaker 1: Some dens are on both sides of the ball mark
- 18:07Speaker 1: is that just part of the growing pains of a
- 18:09Speaker 1: young player like that.
- 18:11Speaker 4: He got caught off guard by a well above average
- 18:13Speaker 4: pickoff move. Jared Weaver had one as well, And this
- 18:17Speaker 4: is the difference in the big leagues. You'll see stuff
- 18:20Speaker 4: that you're not going to see before. And he, in
- 18:24Speaker 4: my opinion, probably had no clue how good the pickoff
- 18:28Speaker 4: move was and how quick for a right hander he
- 18:31Speaker 4: was able to get the ball over. So, I mean,
- 18:33Speaker 4: there's a long lease with this kid. He at times
- 18:37Speaker 4: does look like he's experiencing things for the first time,
- 18:41Speaker 4: but I think he's held his own. He's played a
- 18:43Speaker 4: nice third base in my eyes. He definitely has the
- 18:47Speaker 4: bat speed he's got some clutch hits and if they're
- 18:49Speaker 4: going to give him a room to grow, then you
- 18:52Speaker 4: know what, I'm fine seeing stuff like this. It's it's
- 18:55Speaker 4: airing on the side of aggressiveness, and you know we
- 18:57Speaker 4: can handle that.
- 18:59Speaker 1: Yeah, all right, We're going to take one more break

- 20:07Speaker 1: Hey, Welcome back to Halo Territory with Mark Trumbo, Mike
- 20:09Speaker 1: Di Giovanna, and Tyler Rio. So manager Kurtzuzuki extended Walbert
- 20:15Speaker 1: Urania to the seventh inning Monday night and didn't go
- 20:19Speaker 1: too well. Uh. He hits Lawlor with an O two
- 20:23Speaker 1: pitch two change up to open the inning, picks off Waller,
- 20:26Speaker 1: which is great. Then he gives up a solo homer
- 20:28Speaker 1: to Pevin Smith off the right field foul poll Marte single,
- 20:33Speaker 1: Perdomo RBI double, four to two lead. Donovan Walton, who
- 20:37Speaker 1: we've talked about, cuts it to one without a solo homer,
- 20:41Speaker 1: but the Angels go on to lose.
- 20:44Speaker 3: Urania. Not a bad game, seven hits.
- 20:47Speaker 1: He gave up four runs, three earned, two walks, three strikeouts.
- 20:51Speaker 1: Not as uh, not as much swing and miss as
- 20:54Speaker 1: we've seen from him. Mark, what'd you think of Urania
- 20:58Speaker 1: last night?
- 20:59Speaker 6: Uh?
- 21:00Speaker 3: Good to get him into that seventh inning, at least
- 21:03Speaker 3: I think it was.
- 21:04Speaker 4: I think that anytime one of the Angels starters can
- 21:07Speaker 4: go deeper into the games, it's good for the bullpen,
- 21:11Speaker 4: as the bullpen is improving, but there are guys with
- 21:14Speaker 4: some usage issues and some injury concerns. They made through
- 21:20Speaker 4: Pomerance was DFA. I have yet to see any explanation
- 21:25Speaker 4: why early performance wasn't good. More recent performance has been better.
- 21:30Speaker 4: Getting back to Walbert, his stuff actually rated as a
- 21:33Speaker 4: D on the Pictureless PLV. I was surprised, but I
- 21:38Speaker 4: think the reality was his sinker and his change up.
- 21:42Speaker 4: There's not enough movement, especially his change up is lacking
- 21:46Speaker 4: a lot of vertical break. So when you're seeing not
- 21:49Speaker 4: as many whiffs, I think that that is a decent explanation.
- 21:52Speaker 4: Why sweet as sweeper we've been, or at least I've
- 21:55Speaker 4: been hoping to see more of them. He did use
- 21:57Speaker 4: it more yesterday and one quick note. A couple of
- 22:04Speaker 4: quick notes. It's interesting his home record is four and
- 22:07Speaker 4: one with a one to eighty five. He's zero and
- 22:09Speaker 4: four on the road with a three eight six. The
- 22:12Speaker 4: ops on the road is eight twenty nine and at
- 22:15Speaker 4: home it is five eighteen, so it's a small sample size,
- 22:19Speaker 4: but the early numbers at least proved to him being
- 22:24Speaker 4: very good at home and not as good on the road.
- 22:27Speaker 4: I think the opposite about Soriano was, you know, said
- 22:30Speaker 4: previous seasons, so monitor that going forward. But he still
- 22:34Speaker 4: turned I mean, he went seven innings and he gave
- 22:36Speaker 4: his team a chance to win the game and they
- 22:39Speaker 4: weren't able to. But I still thought he did a
- 22:41Speaker 4: very nice job managing a team. The Diamondbacks do not
- 22:44Speaker 4: strike out, by the way. They have the third lowest
- 22:46Speaker 4: strikeouts in baseball. So it's it's probably and it'll be
- 22:50Speaker 4: interesting tonight with Deptmer's, who's been on quite the role.
- 22:53Speaker 4: If he mows them down, then that's really saying something
- 22:56Speaker 4: because they don't hit for any power generally speaking. But
- 22:59Speaker 4: they also don't.
- 23:00Speaker 1: Yeah, the Angels, of course notoriously struggled to draft and
- 23:05Speaker 1: develop starting pitchers. But you know, read Debt Meers is
- 23:10Speaker 1: really seems to be having a breakout year.
- 23:13Speaker 3: And Walbert Urana.
- 23:14Speaker 1: I don't think he came out of nowhere anywhere, because
- 23:17Speaker 1: we did talk him a little about him a little
- 23:19Speaker 1: bit in spring training. But Tyler is an Angels fan.
- 23:22Speaker 1: Does this have you a little excited at least some
- 23:24Speaker 1: hope for the future in terms of a rotation that
- 23:27Speaker 1: you know, could be built around some youngish, homegrown starters.
- 23:32Speaker 2: Oh definitely, you know, like you said he was, he
- 23:35Speaker 2: was highlighted a little bit in spring training and then
- 23:37Speaker 2: you know, of course the big fastball, right. I think
- 23:39Speaker 2: he basically came on the scene. He was one o
- 23:42Speaker 2: two and you know, but at the end of the days,
- 23:45Speaker 2: it's pitching, right, so to basically see him in there,
- 23:48Speaker 2: you know, I like him going seven as well, like
- 23:51Speaker 2: like Mark said, to be able to keep it hopefully
- 23:53Speaker 2: a little bit lighter day on the bullpen. You know,
- 23:55Speaker 2: whenever an Angel starter goes more than five six innings,
- 23:58Speaker 2: it's awesome, you know. And to see you know, like
- 24:01Speaker 2: you said, the swing and miss stuff wasn't entirely there.
- 24:03Speaker 2: You know, a lot of like like Mark said, a
- 24:05Speaker 2: lot of horizontal horizontal break, not a lot of vertical break,
- 24:08Speaker 2: which you know, my grandfather played professional baseball, and he
- 24:12Speaker 2: had talked to me about this when we pitched. Was
- 24:14Speaker 2: the bat is thirty two inches long, thirty three inches long,
- 24:17Speaker 2: you know, the barrels twenty inches long. It's only two
- 24:20Speaker 2: and five eighths inches wide. So if you get a curveball,
- 24:24Speaker 2: you wanted to curve and break down because you only
- 24:26Speaker 2: have a certain amount of space to hit the baseball
- 24:29Speaker 2: rather than a slider or a change up that's you know,
- 24:31Speaker 2: moving laterally. Well, you know they still have you know,
- 24:35Speaker 2: room and space to hit a baseball realistically with the barrel,
- 24:39Speaker 2: you know. So I always always thought about that, and
- 24:40Speaker 2: last night kind of came up because the change ups
- 24:43Speaker 2: were they were good, they're you know in terms of
- 24:46Speaker 2: changing speeds, yes, but it was a lot of horizontal movement,
- 24:49Speaker 2: you know, a lot of stuff that was pronating, but
- 24:52Speaker 2: you know, off to the the arm side, so you know,
- 24:55Speaker 2: you get a little bit more downward movement, you know,
- 24:57Speaker 2: a little bit a little bit more on top of
- 24:59Speaker 2: the change up and a little bit more you're going
- 25:01Speaker 2: to get that downward movement, which obviously is going to
- 25:03Speaker 2: create some more swinging miss right. So you know, again,
- 25:07Speaker 2: young kid coming coming up and through, super excited to see.
- 25:10Speaker 2: But you know, definitely, you know, has some stuff to
- 25:13Speaker 2: work on, just like every player everybody does all the time. Right, So,
- 25:17Speaker 2: but very very promising to see.
- 25:18Speaker 1: Yes, all right, we're gonna close the show talking about
- 25:21Speaker 1: Logan o'happy the Angels Catcher. I want to catch you
- 25:25Speaker 1: up to a story that Jeff Fletcher, the Orange County
- 25:27Speaker 1: Register wrote over the weekend on Logan and in this story,
- 25:31Speaker 1: Ohapi acknowledged that he was he's been impacted by speculation
- 25:35Speaker 1: that he would be demoted to Triple A, and that
- 25:37Speaker 1: motive motivated him to snap out of his funk. Here
- 25:41Speaker 1: some of his quotes, quote, you come to games thinking
- 25:43Speaker 1: you're gonna get sent down, Ohap, He said, I know
- 25:46Speaker 1: that things happen like that. It made sense when I
- 25:48Speaker 1: was not playing well. I still have to prove it.
- 25:51Speaker 1: It's not like I'm going to be up here forever.
- 25:52Speaker 1: I have to prove it every day. But that's the
- 25:54Speaker 1: writing on the wall and I'm talking about. And he
- 25:57Speaker 1: went on to say, I don't care if I have
- 25:59Speaker 1: to get the key and lock the place up. I'm
- 26:01Speaker 1: taking that approach forward and it's helped my peace of
- 26:04Speaker 1: mind more than it has physically. Mark As much as
- 26:11Speaker 1: this kid has struggled in the last year and for
- 26:13Speaker 1: big chunks of this year, is that the kind of
- 26:16Speaker 1: effort you really like to see?
- 26:19Speaker 4: I think so. Yeah, he had a really nice swing.
- 26:21Speaker 4: Tyler touched on it line drive to right center field
- 26:24Speaker 4: last night. That looks like the best version of him
- 26:29Speaker 4: in my opinion. I've talked about some of the off
- 26:31Speaker 4: season work, the overly pole happy trendy stuff that for
- 26:37Speaker 4: some it probably is really good. For a guy like
- 26:40Speaker 4: Logan who actually does an inherent ability to use the
- 26:43Speaker 4: whole field and use right center in particular with power,
- 26:47Speaker 4: it's a shame to not use it your advantage, and
- 26:51Speaker 4: I think the early swings this year were seeking something
- 26:56Speaker 4: I know I believe. In that article as well, he
- 26:58Speaker 4: talked about reverting to a routine that he had I
- 27:03Speaker 4: think in Australia when he was nineteen or so.
- 27:05Speaker 3: I'm not sure.
- 27:08Speaker 4: Exactly what the routine is or how it came about,
- 27:11Speaker 4: but I think that he's gone back to some things
- 27:13Speaker 4: that have been a staple of him as a player
- 27:17Speaker 4: and as a hitter. You dance with the one that
- 27:21Speaker 4: you brought or whatever that's saying is you would probably know, Mike,
- 27:24Speaker 4: what is the same?
- 27:26Speaker 1: Yeah, you got to write you dance with the one
- 27:28Speaker 1: who brought you, you came with whatever.
- 27:30Speaker 3: Yeah, you know sixties term. But I think that.
- 27:36Speaker 4: You know what's he's when he's playing, well, you know
- 27:39Speaker 4: things are obviously going to be better. But if he
- 27:40Speaker 4: can get in a place where mentally he's confident, and
- 27:45Speaker 4: I think that the team is going to benefit big time.
- 27:47Speaker 4: His catching is improving, I think he's put a lot
- 27:49Speaker 4: of effort in there, and regardless of any of it,
- 27:53Speaker 4: the effort will be commended at least on This shows
- 27:58Speaker 4: the stress is a tough thing the big leagues. You
- 28:00Speaker 4: can't really prepare for it, and you're gonna need some
- 28:03Speaker 4: help along the way. You're gonna need a lot of
- 28:05Speaker 4: help along the way, and you need to be open
- 28:06Speaker 4: to receiving that help. Sometimes it comes from places you
- 28:10Speaker 4: wouldn't expect either. But if this is the Logan that
- 28:13Speaker 4: we're gonna see moving forward and the rest of the year,
- 28:16Speaker 4: this is a big addition and a big plus for
- 28:18Speaker 4: the ball club.
- 28:19Speaker 1: Yeah, Logan's overall number is still not great to twenty
- 28:21Speaker 1: one with a six twenty four ops, three homer, seven doubles,
- 28:24Speaker 1: seventeen RBIs in the season, but over his last seven
- 28:28Speaker 1: games for twenty one batting average eight for nineteen, a homer,
- 28:34Speaker 1: three doubles, four RBIs and only four strikeouts, So not
- 28:39Speaker 1: too shabby. And here's what Logan also said, about his
- 28:44Speaker 1: recent play impacting his mental state of mind. I can't
- 28:47Speaker 1: even put it into words how much better it feels.
- 28:50Speaker 1: I know it's only been a week or two, but
- 28:51Speaker 1: it's really improved my quality of life. Not playing as
- 28:55Speaker 1: well as you have in the past at this level
- 28:57Speaker 1: is something that is really hard to deal with. I
- 28:59Speaker 1: try to do the best I can, but it's not easy.
- 29:01Speaker 1: I'm happy that I felt that feeling again over the
- 29:03Speaker 1: past week or two because it's something that I've been
- 29:06Speaker 1: looking for for over a year. We get one quick
- 29:10Speaker 1: question to Tyler and then I want Mark to comment
- 29:12Speaker 1: on that to close the show. Tyler, I don't know
- 29:15Speaker 1: at Angel fans started to give up on this kid,
- 29:17Speaker 1: and I know it's only a week or two stretch
- 29:20Speaker 1: where he's starting to swing the bat like you can
- 29:23Speaker 1: maybe restore a little faith in the minds of Angel fans.
- 29:29Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean, you know, I wouldn't say giving up,
- 29:32Speaker 2: but I mean obviously very frustrated. Again, you know, somebody
- 29:35Speaker 2: who knows the farm and knows where you're at in
- 29:38Speaker 2: terms of you know, when we trade players. Man, I
- 29:40Speaker 2: was super super happy about Logan of Hobby, especially because
- 29:43Speaker 2: there was really no backstop that the Angels had right.
- 29:46Speaker 2: It was actually really simple. When he first came up,
- 29:48Speaker 2: I think it was only like a heel up, heel down.
- 29:50Speaker 2: So it was like this guy, this guy's gonna be
- 29:51Speaker 2: able to hit. We're gonna have a little hitting catcher
- 29:53Speaker 2: throw some guys out and then yeah, then, like Mark said,
- 29:57Speaker 2: you know, I don't know, maybe he was in search
- 29:59Speaker 2: for something else. Obviously a big stature guy. You know, again,
- 30:03Speaker 2: catching could be a power hitting spot as well. But
- 30:06Speaker 2: at the end of the day, I mean, we all
- 30:08Speaker 2: know when you're when you're chasing homers or you're chasing
- 30:10Speaker 2: you know, big flies and having you know, putting the
- 30:13Speaker 2: ball out into the outfield, it usually doesn't end very well.
- 30:16Speaker 2: That's exactly why you get line the line and you know,
- 30:20Speaker 2: those balls stay are also called fair because once you
- 30:23Speaker 2: are able to stay on a baseball as a hitter,
- 30:26Speaker 2: it opens up the whole field. And then you catch
- 30:29Speaker 2: a ball out in front and it goes four hundred
- 30:30Speaker 2: and thirty feet and you're you're super happy about it, right,
- 30:33Speaker 2: But that wasn't the goal. So I think he's getting
- 30:36Speaker 2: back to that a little bit and being able to
- 30:39Speaker 2: kind of stay on a baseball. Like we said, Mark,
- 30:41Speaker 2: you know that that backside double is nice to see. Obviously,
- 30:44Speaker 2: you're staying on pitches, You're staying on the ball, You're
- 30:46Speaker 2: trying to get get beat deep realistically, and then when
- 30:49Speaker 2: that happens, you know, of course, your your athletics and
- 30:52Speaker 2: and you know your your abilities are going to be
- 30:54Speaker 2: able to take over, you know, and get your barrel
- 30:56Speaker 2: to the ball, and so you standing on second base realistically.
- 30:59Speaker 2: So I'm glad that he's been able to kind of
- 31:02Speaker 2: mentally switch it and hopefully we see this Logan O
- 31:05Speaker 2: hope going forward.
- 31:06Speaker 1: Yeah, we've seen comments like this from Logan in the past,
- 31:11Speaker 1: so I can't say they were totally surprising. But Mark,
- 31:14Speaker 1: as we know, big league ballplayers are notorious for their toughness,
- 31:19Speaker 1: their mental toughness, for not showing any kind of weakness.
- 31:22Speaker 1: What do you think of the fact that Logan was
- 31:24Speaker 1: this transparent admitting that you know, he feared being sent
- 31:29Speaker 1: down to triple A, that he actually heard the noise,
- 31:31Speaker 1: the buzz out there that you see and here on
- 31:33Speaker 1: social media. Is that any bit of a surprise as
- 31:37Speaker 1: a former player to hear that from a current player,
- 31:39Speaker 1: or is it maybe good.
- 31:40Speaker 3: For him to be this open about his feelings. Yeah,
- 31:45Speaker 3: he's not a surprise.
- 31:46Speaker 4: It's what every player that doesn't And even if you
- 31:49Speaker 4: have a huge deal, doesn't guarantee you're gonna always be
- 31:52Speaker 4: on the field. You got to put up the numbers
- 31:55Speaker 4: and you have to bring it. You have to be
- 31:57Speaker 4: someone that the team can count on. Otherwise you lose
- 32:00Speaker 4: playing time or you lose your gig. I think with
- 32:04Speaker 4: Logan put it into their words, it's probably the next
- 32:07Speaker 4: best thing. It actually happening, and if he were, if
- 32:12Speaker 4: it were to happen, which you know, he's headed in
- 32:14Speaker 4: the right direction. So hopefully this is the end of
- 32:16Speaker 4: this talk, but it's not the end of the world
- 32:19Speaker 4: if he were to go down and get a reset.
- 32:21Speaker 4: I mean, he's still the best option they have a
- 32:23Speaker 4: catcher by far. He has a ton of potential. I
- 32:27Speaker 4: think it's about getting to a place where he's doing
- 32:31Speaker 4: the right work, the right drill work with the bat.
- 32:34Speaker 4: I think he's a lot more confident player when he's hitting,
- 32:37Speaker 4: no surprise, but maybe a little bit more than most
- 32:40Speaker 4: because the bat is one of his big, big calling cards,
- 32:44Speaker 4: and it's you know, it's a good thing.
- 32:46Speaker 3: He put it out there.
- 32:47Speaker 4: It's people aren't crushing him for it. It's it's just
- 32:49Speaker 4: real life, and it's relatable, and I think it'll be
- 32:53Speaker 4: a good thing in the in the long run.
- 32:55Speaker 1: All Right, we'll close the show with that. Thanks for
- 32:57Speaker 1: tuning in, Thanks for listening today. Please like and subscribe,
