- 0:03Speaker 2: I'm sorry to disturb you at this hour, sir, but
- 0:06Speaker 2: we're at Q2 status. It looks like we've found that
- 0:09Speaker 2: lost consignment of Easter eggs.
- 0:14Speaker 3: Yes, sir, pretty sure. They've turned up in Louisville.
- 0:18Speaker 2: I'm getting confirmations on this from the Louisville Police Department. Louisville, Kentucky, sir. Well, sir,
- 0:26Speaker 2: it would be good news, except that the eggs have hatched.
- 0:38Speaker 4: Hey, this is General Joe Shelby, better known as Martinez
- 0:43Speaker 4: from Dawn of the Dead, and you're listening to the
- 0:46Speaker 4: Dynamite Channel of Movie Meltdown.
- 0:50Speaker 5: Stay tuned and stay tight.

- 1:59Speaker 7: What's up and welcome to Movie Meltdown. I'm Brian.
- 2:01Speaker 8: I'm Lucy.
- 2:02Speaker 9: I'm Ben.
- 2:03Speaker 1: And we're here in.
- 2:04Speaker 10: The middle of zombie attack?
- 2:06Speaker 11: We're in the middle of the street here in Louisville
- 2:13Speaker 11: and um.
- 2:14Speaker 1: Yeah, what....
- 2:29Speaker 6: We're waiting for this zombie event to kick off. One
- 2:33Speaker 6: of the largest zombie walks, attacks, whatever, in the country. So,
- 2:39Speaker 6: what is your take on.
- 2:39Speaker 5: It so far, guys?
- 2:41Speaker 8: Terrified.
- 2:43Speaker 7: Amazed.
- 2:44Speaker 1: And amused. It's awesome.
- 2:48Speaker 5: Even funnier is you took the bus here, so... Yeah,
- 2:51Speaker 5: on my way up here on the bus, a zombie
- 2:53Speaker 5: got on. And I was just thinking that, you know...
- 2:58Speaker 5: If you're the bus driver and if you don't know
- 2:59Speaker 5: that this is going on, then that might be quite
- 3:01Speaker 5: alarming to see a person with, like, a bloody ripped
- 3:03Speaker 5: shirt walk onto your bus. But he didn't seem to care,
- 3:06Speaker 5: so it was all good. This is awesome. Like, right
- 3:10Speaker 5: now I'm looking at a zombie military Hannibal Lecter. And
- 3:17Speaker 5: that was some kind of rabid monster zombie that I
- 3:20Speaker 5: just ran by just now. That was also awesome.
- 3:22Speaker 1: Facing small children. That's fun. Yes.
- 3:25Speaker 5: Yeah, it's crazy.
- 3:27Speaker 6: Yeah, I think it's funny that this area in particular
- 3:30Speaker 6: now is so used to it, because, yeah, I pulled
- 3:32Speaker 6: up to the stoplight down the street coming here, and
- 3:34Speaker 6: it was a good amount before it even started, but, like,
- 3:38Speaker 6: the car that pulled up next to me, the girl
- 3:40Speaker 6: in the passenger seat looked like she'd been brained with
- 3:42Speaker 6: a hammer. And on a normal day, you'd be like,
- 3:45Speaker 6: I hope they're driving to the emergency room right now,
- 3:47Speaker 6: but here, you're just like, oh, hey, how's it going?
- 3:50Speaker 6: It's sad that it's become so commonplace to see people
- 3:52Speaker 6: in horrible, horrible, bloody mess, and.
- 3:57Speaker 5: We're waiting in great anticipation because it looks like it's
- 4:01Speaker 5: about to start. There's more and more zombies just crowding
- 4:03Speaker 5: around us, and it's getting darker and darker, and it's just, yeah,
- 4:10Speaker 5: I'm very pumped for what's about to go down.
- 4:14Speaker 6: If you haven't noticed on this show, we like to
- 4:17Speaker 6: go out into the world.
- 4:18Speaker 1: We're not ones like many.
- 4:20Speaker 6: Not to, you know, name any names, but a lot
- 4:22Speaker 6: of podcasts like to live in their mom's basement. And
- 4:25Speaker 6: we're a little better than that, I think, because we
- 4:27Speaker 6: get out into the world and experience things. We're pretending
- 4:31Speaker 6: to grow and become better people.
- 4:33Speaker 1: We're not, but I mean, we're pretending. So, yeah, this
- 4:36Speaker 1: is another one.
- 4:37Speaker 6: Of those episodes that I thought, you know, sure there's
- 4:41Speaker 6: a zombie outbreak, but let's just conduct a regular old episode. So,
- 4:45Speaker 6: as we go along, we're going to talk to some
- 4:46Speaker 6: of these zombie people, but... Yeah, we're also just going
- 4:49Speaker 6: to have our normal episode in the middle of this mess.
- 4:51Speaker 6: So we'll take a break and come back with more
- 4:54Speaker 6: crazy zombie activities.
- 5:33Speaker 11: Let's all go to the lobby Let's all go to
- 5:37Speaker 11: the lobby Let's all go to the lobby To.
- 5:41Speaker 8: Get ourselves a treat Delicious things to eat The popcorn
- 5:47Speaker 8: can't be beat The sparkling drinks are just dandy The chocolate.
- 5:53Speaker 11: Bars and the candy So let's all go to.
- 5:56Speaker 12: The lobby To get.
- 5:59Speaker 9: Ourselves a treat Let's.
- 6:01Speaker 11: All go to the lobby to get ourselves a treat.
- 6:12Speaker 1: It never stops.
- 6:40Speaker 6: All right, so we are here with Lindy Liu, the
- 6:42Speaker 6: co-creator of this event. Truthfully, I've kind of done this before.
- 6:48Speaker 6: The sad part is it's been, what.
- 6:50Speaker 1: Six years?
- 6:51Speaker 10: Six years, yeah.
- 6:52Speaker 1: That's really weird because it seems like we just did this.
- 6:54Speaker 6: But, yeah, it was in the early print days of
- 6:58Speaker 6: the Out of These Stewies, which most of you don't
- 6:59Speaker 6: know anything about, so we better start over. So I
- 7:02Speaker 6: guess I will ask you, and you've probably answered this
- 7:06Speaker 6: one a million times at this point, but how did
- 7:08Speaker 6: all of this get started?
- 7:10Speaker 13: This started because John King and I have the same
- 7:13Speaker 13: birthday and we wanted to throw a rad birthday party.
- 7:15Speaker 13: So we, uh, decided to do a zombie walk. Um,
- 7:19Speaker 13: it was one of the first ones in the world.
- 7:21Speaker 1: Yay.
- 7:21Speaker 10: Whatever.
- 7:22Speaker 13: Um, and, uh, we made tactical business cards and might've
- 7:27Speaker 13: spray painted some things about it and almost a hundred
- 7:30Speaker 13: people showed up for the first one. So then it
- 7:32Speaker 13: became a reoccurring thing every year.
- 7:33Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 7:34Speaker 6: Did you even plan on it being a event as
- 7:37Speaker 6: much as just like your birthday party like just kind
- 7:39Speaker 6: of event inviting friends and.
- 7:40Speaker 1: Stuff that first time or what did you even have
- 7:43Speaker 1: any idea what you were doing at that point no
- 7:46Speaker 1: no we did not um or claim to now that's arguable.
- 7:50Speaker 10: Yeah no no we we had no idea we were.
- 7:53Speaker 13: Really shocked that 89 people showed up we thought we
- 7:55Speaker 13: were like wow i can't believe it And as I
- 8:00Speaker 13: was just saying before we started filming, we were having
- 8:02Speaker 13: almost that many policemen.
- 8:03Speaker 10: Here this year to control the crowd.
- 8:05Speaker 13: So we didn't. And then we got about six months
- 8:10Speaker 13: out from when we did it the first year. And
- 8:11Speaker 13: so many people had called us and stuff like that
- 8:13Speaker 13: asking if we were going to do it again.
- 8:14Speaker 10: So we thought we should.
- 8:16Speaker 6: Yeah, just being there the second year, it already had
- 8:19Speaker 6: built up so much just notoriety at that point that
- 8:23Speaker 6: it was amazing how many people showed up just that
- 8:25Speaker 6: second year.
- 8:26Speaker 1: I don't even know what the count was on that.
- 8:28Speaker 1: But it was, I mean, compared to the first year
- 8:30Speaker 1: when nobody knew about it, that second year it was huge.
- 8:32Speaker 1: It seemed massive.
- 8:33Speaker 8: Yeah.
- 8:33Speaker 1: Yeah. For something that, you know, really hadn't even started
- 8:36Speaker 1: getting press at that point.
- 8:38Speaker 6: It was all just kind of word of mouth. And,
- 8:39Speaker 6: you know, you guys just sort of spreading the word
- 8:41Speaker 6: with flyers.
- 8:42Speaker 1: We're very popular. And good looking. If you say so.
- 8:46Speaker 1: And good looking. Oh, but yeah. So it's grown exponentially. Exponentially. Exponentially.
- 8:54Speaker 10: Exploding it.
- 8:56Speaker 1: Ridiculously? How about that one?
- 8:58Speaker 6: Yeah, it's amazing how much, you know, looking at how
- 9:02Speaker 6: much it's grown over the years.
- 9:03Speaker 1: So are you prepared? Have you been prepared for that?
- 9:08Speaker 10: I don't know if we've been prepared for five years.
- 9:10Speaker 1: No, we're, you know.
- 9:13Speaker 13: We've got it pretty well down what we have to
- 9:15Speaker 13: do every year to make it, like, safe and fun
- 9:17Speaker 13: for everybody. It is an overwhelming amount of people, but
- 9:20Speaker 13: that's kind of what makes it amazing.
- 9:22Speaker 10: And everybody's really, like, good every year.
- 9:25Speaker 13: Nobody, like, wants to come out and just destroy everything,
- 9:28Speaker 13: you know.
- 9:29Speaker 10: So it's been pretty good.
- 9:30Speaker 13: We're partnering now with, like, the Monkey Wrench.
- 9:33Speaker 10: So it's, like, we've got more space. It's much bigger.
- 9:36Speaker 13: So, yeah, I think we're doing good.
- 9:39Speaker 1: We're doing good.
- 9:39Speaker 9: Definitely.
- 9:40Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 9:41Speaker 1: And then just, you know, that's the planning end of it, prepared.
- 9:45Speaker 6: Mentally, were you prepared for the kind of numbers that
- 9:48Speaker 6: showed up?
- 9:50Speaker 1: No. Second or third, or by the time you started
- 9:52Speaker 1: getting just droves, like, what?
- 9:55Speaker 13: The year that people tried to overturn the TARC bus
- 9:58Speaker 13: was when I realized we were not prepared and needed insurance.
- 10:03Speaker 1: That's true. So you don't think about that stuff.
- 10:05Speaker 7: No.
- 10:08Speaker 6: I can at least go to our main question. We
- 10:10Speaker 6: were trying to think of something, you know, useful to
- 10:11Speaker 6: ask people here. So, again, being the movie geeks that
- 10:14Speaker 6: we are, the zombie outbreak, you know, happens. You're building
- 10:18Speaker 6: your stronghold. You can only take three movies into the
- 10:20Speaker 6: stronghold with you. What movies are they?
- 10:22Speaker 10: God, really?
- 10:24Speaker 1: Three movies? Hard question. Who only takes three movies? It's
- 10:28Speaker 1: limited space. You've got food. You've got to plan ahead.
- 10:31Speaker 1: If you're ill-prepared... A real movie geek would know better
- 10:35Speaker 1: and would build an entire separate compound. Okay, so three movies.
- 10:38Speaker 6: Three movies.
- 10:39Speaker 8: Jeez.
- 10:41Speaker 13: Okay, Shogun Assassin, for sure.
- 10:43Speaker 1: Oh, my God. This is a horrible question.
- 10:49Speaker 13: It's a mean question, yeah.
- 10:53Speaker 1: Probably the.
- 10:56Speaker 13: New Dawn of the Dead, and I know that's whatever,
- 10:59Speaker 13: but you get to hear Johnny Cash, and I'm assuming
- 11:02Speaker 13: if you're an idiot and only have three movies that
- 11:03Speaker 13: you're not going to remember to bring music with you.
- 11:05Speaker 10: So that's why, and it's good.
- 11:08Speaker 1: It is pretty. And the third one, Die Hard. You
- 11:13Speaker 1: can't go wrong with Die Hard.
- 11:14Speaker 10: It's a Christmas movie.
- 11:15Speaker 1: It's classic. It's Christmas.
- 11:16Speaker 10: You might be in there for a while.
- 11:19Speaker 1: Covers your holiday.
- 11:20Speaker 14: Yeah, yeah.
- 11:20Speaker 1: That makes sense.
- 11:21Speaker 4: Yeah. Oh.
- 11:22Speaker 1: That's a solid list.
- 11:24Speaker 7: I didn't do it. I don't know.
- 11:28Speaker 1: I'm just telling you.
- 11:29Speaker 9: I'm doing an interview.
- 11:31Speaker 1: He's a way better interviewee than I am.
- 11:33Speaker 10: He's, like, clever.
- 11:34Speaker 13: John, come here and be clever. So, yes, so you
- 11:40Speaker 13: come and sit down and be clever.
- 11:41Speaker 8: Okay.
- 11:41Speaker 7: Okay.
- 11:42Speaker 1: Thank you. All right, thank you.
- 11:44Speaker 13: And ask him that damn question.
- 11:45Speaker 4: That's a hard question.
- 11:48Speaker 1: She doesn't like my question.
- 11:49Speaker 10: I don't like that question.
- 11:50Speaker 1: So, yeah, now we're here with John King, the other
- 11:53Speaker 1: creator of this thing. I was going into that with her.
- 12:02Speaker 6: What preparation did you, as you've gotten into this crazier,
- 12:06Speaker 6: bigger event every year, what exactly can.
- 12:09Speaker 1: You do to prepare for it?
- 12:12Speaker 15: Oh, well, because it's gotten this big and it takes
- 12:15Speaker 15: place in the center of town and it moves, um,
- 12:18Speaker 15: the logistics are a nightmare and we work very closely
- 12:23Speaker 15: with the city government and we have to work with
- 12:25Speaker 15: all five major branches. Um, so we have to work
- 12:31Speaker 15: very closely with the police, of course, traffic, uh, waste management, um, Everybody.
- 12:40Speaker 15: And everybody has to sign off on it. The emergency services.
- 12:45Speaker 1: It's a lot of work. It's a lot of work.
- 12:47Speaker 15: And it's costly. They make us get millions of dollars
- 12:50Speaker 15: worth of insurance to cover everybody. But we have still
- 12:55Speaker 15: managed to keep it a free event where everybody is invited.
- 12:59Speaker 5: But because of that, yeah, it's a ton of work.
- 13:01Speaker 15: And I don't know if you've noticed, but my press
- 13:05Speaker 15: photo this year was me hanging myself in the I
- 13:08Speaker 15: did see that, actually.
- 13:10Speaker 1: It's kind of, you know... Put you in that frame
- 13:13Speaker 1: of mind.
- 13:13Speaker 9: Yeah.
- 13:14Speaker 15: It makes me feel that way a little bit sometimes,
- 13:16Speaker 15: and that's where that came.
- 13:18Speaker 4: Up, yeah.
- 13:19Speaker 6: Well, yeah, that's what I was saying to her. It's
- 13:21Speaker 6: something you never... I mean, that first year, you're throwing
- 13:23Speaker 6: a birthday party. You couldn't have imagined any of this.
- 13:28Speaker 15: No way. But then you get a little of that.
- 13:31Speaker 5: And it makes it all worthwhile.
- 13:32Speaker 6: Oh, so, I mean, this has become one of the bigger.
- 13:37Speaker 1: I mean, it was... far as I know, one of
- 13:40Speaker 1: the earliest ones I'd seen in the country. We hadn't
- 13:43Speaker 1: heard of any when we started.
- 13:45Speaker 15: I think later the second year we came across a
- 13:47Speaker 15: website that claimed they had done one a few months
- 13:50Speaker 15: before us.
- 13:51Speaker 5: But we had no idea.
- 13:53Speaker 6: And Pittsburgh has gotten kind of huge, but I'd say
- 13:55Speaker 6: we're still probably one of the biggest in the country now.
- 13:58Speaker 5: I would imagine.
- 13:58Speaker 15: I looked up online and there's all these different people
- 14:01Speaker 15: that claim different numbers and we're right up there. Last
- 14:05Speaker 15: year we had Between 8 and 9, the city government
- 14:09Speaker 15: said about 8,500, and that's about as big as any
- 14:13Speaker 15: other one that we've ever seen.
- 14:14Speaker 1: And that's amazing for this size city, too.
- 14:17Speaker 15: Well, you know, Pittsburgh is the home of zombies. They
- 14:20Speaker 15: can claim it as the birthplace, and I'm all right
- 14:22Speaker 15: with that. So I can see where theirs will be
- 14:24Speaker 15: pretty big, yeah.
- 14:25Speaker 1: We're a secondary home of zombies. We're the other home.
- 14:28Speaker 1: We're where we shipped the zombies after that.
- 14:30Speaker 15: Well, you know, I mean, the two creators of Night
- 14:32Speaker 15: of the Living Dead, one was a Pittsburgh guy and
- 14:34Speaker 15: the other one a Louisville dude, and, you know, Return
- 14:37Speaker 15: of the Living Dead was right here.
- 14:38Speaker 1: We're the second home of zombies.
- 14:40Speaker 5: I'll take that.
- 14:43Speaker 6: I did want to ask, the route has changed so
- 14:46Speaker 6: many times now. Is it because they keep wanting to
- 14:50Speaker 6: find a better way, or is it stuff that you.
- 14:52Speaker 1: guys want to do it differently.
- 14:54Speaker 15: The original we wanted to change it every year and
- 14:56Speaker 15: then in the middle there got big and we kind
- 14:59Speaker 15: of kept to the same but we kind of outgrew
- 15:03Speaker 15: the places we were before and we also need to
- 15:06Speaker 15: work more with the neighborhood and the city and we
- 15:10Speaker 15: all got together and figured the best way we thought
- 15:13Speaker 15: we could do it definitely cool keep it going we
- 15:16Speaker 15: got to make everybody happy yeah let's see anything else
- 15:22Speaker 15: What was the question that she thought?
- 15:24Speaker 1: The question she hates?
- 15:25Speaker 6: Again, I was just trying to come up with a
- 15:27Speaker 6: fun movie tie-in. So I was like, okay, the zombie
- 15:29Speaker 6: outbreak happens. You're building your stronghold. You can only take
- 15:32Speaker 6: three movies with you.
- 15:34Speaker 14: What are they?
- 15:35Speaker 7: Nice.
- 15:37Speaker 13: That's a good one.
- 15:38Speaker 1: It's hard.
- 15:39Speaker 15: Only take three movies.
- 15:42Speaker 9: No, I like it.
- 15:42Speaker 5: I like it a lot.
- 15:43Speaker 15: Only take three movies.
- 15:46Speaker 1: The Watchmen, number one.
- 15:47Speaker 8: All right.
- 15:49Speaker 15: V for Vendetta.
- 15:51Speaker 13: Nice.
- 15:53Speaker 15: And.
- 15:55Speaker 5: Man, that's a good question.
- 15:59Speaker 9: Man, I don't know.
- 16:06Speaker 5: What did she say? What did she come up with?
- 16:08Speaker 6: Well, it's just fun that of the two of you,
- 16:10Speaker 6: we've got two Zack Snyder movies, but different ones.
- 16:12Speaker 5: Oh, really?
- 16:13Speaker 1: She picked the Dawn of the Dead remake, so that's interesting.
- 16:16Speaker 8: Yes.
- 16:19Speaker 5: So what movie did she say?
- 16:20Speaker 1: She said Dawn of the Dead. She said the remake
- 16:23Speaker 1: of Dawn of the Dead.
- 16:24Speaker 5: Oh, that's a good one.
- 16:25Speaker 1: Yeah. Can't go wrong with that.
- 16:29Speaker 3: That's classic.
- 16:29Speaker 15: I'll tell you, of that series, the 2004 remake is
- 16:33Speaker 15: probably my favorite.
- 16:34Speaker 9: Yeah.
- 16:35Speaker 15: But, you know, for remakes, I thought that Savini's remake,
- 16:40Speaker 15: Annihilating the Dead, was.
- 16:41Speaker 3: Really good, too.
- 16:42Speaker 7: It is.
- 16:42Speaker 5: Probably not as good as the original, but it was
- 16:44Speaker 5: really good.
- 16:45Speaker 1: It's pretty good.
- 16:46Speaker 6: I have to say that I think the most impressive
- 16:48Speaker 6: thing is the upgrade for Barbara. I think she's so...
- 16:53Speaker 6: To me, I still love the original better. I think
- 16:55Speaker 6: that's the only thing it does.
- 16:56Speaker 15: I liked her hysterics, but in the remake, I liked
- 16:59Speaker 15: how fucking tough she got.
- 17:00Speaker 5: Yeah, true.
- 17:01Speaker 1: And she's not helpless the whole time.
- 17:04Speaker 15: There it is.
- 17:05Speaker 4: You did it.
- 17:05Speaker 7: Ash.
- 17:07Speaker 13: Nice.
- 17:11Speaker 1: Well, I guess I will let you get back to
- 17:13Speaker 1: the insanity here. We have Ash. Definitely. We'll forward those
- 17:18Speaker 1: on to everybody too. But yeah, thanks again. They only
- 17:59Speaker 1: come out at night.
- 18:00Speaker 5: They're mean, rude, and dead.
- 18:02Speaker 7: Not them. Them. Them.
- 18:28Speaker 16: There's a hundred of those things out there.
- 18:30Speaker 12: How many did you say?
- 18:31Speaker 7: A hundred.
- 18:32Speaker 2: The dead are refusing to remain buried.
- 18:34Speaker 5: What are we going to do?
- 18:35Speaker 1: What are we going to do?
- 18:36Speaker 5: We're going to call the boss.
- 18:38Speaker 3: They've come back to life. They're hungry.
- 18:41Speaker 2: And they're not vegetarians.
- 18:43Speaker 3: The graveyard out there is full of people coming out
- 18:45Speaker 3: of the ground.
- 18:46Speaker 7: We have a little problem.
- 18:47Speaker 5: What the hell is going on here?
- 18:49Speaker 7: Rabbit weasels. What?
- 18:57Speaker 14: It's party time.
- 18:58Speaker 9: We got a party. It's party time. Do you want party?
- 19:08Speaker 7: They're back from the grave and ready to party.
- 19:11Speaker 9: It's party time.
- 19:13Speaker 3: The return of the living dead.
- 19:14Speaker 9: We got a party. All the whippo on the floor,
- 19:19Speaker 9: but your A-bones busted and you threw the door, so
- 19:22Speaker 9: do the dance. Cheers.
- 19:30Speaker 10: We'll be right back.
- 19:31Speaker 5: We'll be right back. I hammered down Mr. Generator's gems,
- 19:43Speaker 5: but your pistons don't work to the dead.
- 19:46Speaker 11: Run for ten, the surfing dead.
- 19:51Speaker 9: Come on, turn it.
- 19:54Speaker 7: In, the living dead insist.
- 19:56Speaker 9: It's the latest twist to do the dead.
- 20:02Speaker 1: Can we ask you about the cars?
- 20:03Speaker 14: Hi.
- 20:03Speaker 5: You can ask.
- 20:05Speaker 1: Yeah, sure. These are awesome. They are awesome.
- 20:09Speaker 5: I'm curious as to how you guys made these. They're
- 20:12Speaker 5: just amazing.
- 20:13Speaker 9: They're all caskets.
- 20:14Speaker 7: They are?
- 20:15Speaker 5: They're actually used caskets.
- 20:17Speaker 16: One of her boarders at her farm happened to have
- 20:20Speaker 16: access to them.
- 20:21Speaker 5: And got them for us.
- 20:23Speaker 16: And her husband mainly worked on that and welded it
- 20:27Speaker 16: and added it to a go-kart frame.
- 20:29Speaker 5: I mean, it's not really much to it.
- 20:32Speaker 1: They are awesome, either.
- 20:33Speaker 5: They're fun to play with. Do you think you should, like,
- 20:36Speaker 5: patent these and sell them to other zombies so they can, like,
- 20:38Speaker 5: you know, get around faster because they're all slow and shit?
- 20:41Speaker 1: They're pretty fast.
- 20:42Speaker 5: I think that'd be a great idea. That'd be a good...
- 20:44Speaker 5: Good way to get some money.
- 20:46Speaker 10: So you have to kind of watch it. But no,
- 20:48Speaker 10: we've had people ask, and it's just kind of hard
- 20:50Speaker 10: to get the caskets.
- 20:52Speaker 1: They're not cheap.
- 20:52Speaker 5: Yeah, I mean, they're clearly made with love, right?
- 20:56Speaker 16: Yeah, you have to know somebody since they're used.
- 21:00Speaker 5: Understandable.
- 21:01Speaker 4: Pretty much when people get cremated and have an open casket.
- 21:04Speaker 5: Oh, okay.
- 21:04Speaker 1: So we have to use ones and clean them. That's
- 21:06Speaker 1: a good one. reusing, recycling. Isn't that how you do it?
- 21:11Speaker 10: It's recycling. We've got a couple.
- 21:12Speaker 5: We actually own a haunted house.
- 21:14Speaker 7: Or a haunted attraction.
- 21:15Speaker 5: So we just have a building with it.
- 21:22Speaker 1: I do want to ask our big question. So the
- 21:24Speaker 1: zombie outbreak happens. You're building your stronghold. You can only
- 21:27Speaker 1: take three movies with you in the stronghold.
- 21:29Speaker 5: What do you take? I don't know where to begin
- 21:32Speaker 5: with that.
- 21:34Speaker 1: It's a tough question.
- 21:35Speaker 5: Night of the Living Dead.
- 21:36Speaker 1: Classic. Zombieland, just because I have to.
- 21:40Speaker 7: Nice.
- 21:41Speaker 5: And Tremors, just because it's a screwed up movie.
- 21:44Speaker 1: Tremors is awesome.
- 21:45Speaker 5: I love the Tremors.
- 21:45Speaker 1: That was a punishment as a kid, and now I
- 21:48Speaker 1: really like it.
- 21:49Speaker 5: It's like my mom would.
- 21:50Speaker 1: Make me watch it. We have a Tremors episode.
- 21:53Speaker 6: We have one where we talk about Tremors forever.
- 21:56Speaker 1: It's pretty awesome. I'll have to look it. It's taped
- 21:58Speaker 1: in here, so I won't lose it. Yeah, it's epic.
- 22:00Speaker 5: Because if I don't do that, everything falls out of
- 22:02Speaker 5: my pocket, so I end up with things taped to me.
- 22:05Speaker 1: That's true.
- 22:05Speaker 10: Which opens.
- 22:07Speaker 1: One of the downsides of having a go-kart, yeah.
- 22:09Speaker 5: Everything bounces around, and by the end of the parade
- 22:12Speaker 5: or this walk, I won't be able to feel anything, so.
- 22:15Speaker 7: Nice.
- 22:16Speaker 10: Awesome.
- 22:17Speaker 1: Oh, thank you for talking to us.
- 22:19Speaker 5: No, we just think you have very cool cars.
- 22:20Speaker 1: They are very nice, very nice.
- 22:22Speaker 4: Thank you.
- 22:46Speaker 16: In darkness you will find me. I dance among the dead.
- 22:51Speaker 16: But very soon I'll need to hunt the center flood instead.
- 22:57Speaker 16: Rising from your earth bed.
- 22:59Speaker 3: It thickens in the air.
- 23:01Speaker 16: A smell gone sweetly rancid.
- 23:03Speaker 9: I know that you are near. Tonight, we'll make love
- 23:08Speaker 9: till we die. Tonight, we'll make love till we die.
- 23:18Speaker 5: Dave, I do not get superheroes.
- 23:20Speaker 7: Oh my god, I don't get you.
- 23:22Speaker 5: What don't you get?
- 23:23Speaker 12: Towerbot here. Well, the meatbags were going to say that
- 23:28Speaker 12: if you're a geek and like podcasts, then you could
- 23:30Speaker 12: try Tower of Technobabble at www.toweroftechnobabble.com. Then this started.
- 23:39Speaker 5: Well, it's up to you.
- 23:41Speaker 12: I'm gonna get my taser and put a stop to this.
- 23:43Speaker 3: Towerbot out.
- 23:46Speaker 5: Okay, monkeys. It's knock time.
- 23:48Speaker 10: I know.
- 23:52Speaker 16: You think I'm nasty, but I am no common girl.
- 23:58Speaker 3: I once slept with the devil.
- 24:00Speaker 9: It was really no big thrill.
- 24:02Speaker 16: The passion of the killers would lie away from me.
- 24:06Speaker 9: Just show me my own meaning of death and ecstasy. Tonight,
- 24:10Speaker 9: we'll make love till we die.
- 24:21Speaker 10: I don't even know how to process any of this.
- 24:30Speaker 10: I honestly don't even... I'm overwhelmed. I'm at a loss
- 24:34Speaker 10: for words.
- 24:36Speaker 6: There's a zombie fight going on over there with swords. Oh,
- 24:40Speaker 6: he's staggering out into the road. He's going to die.
- 24:43Speaker 1: Oh, wait, he's already dead. Never mind. Scratch that.
- 24:45Speaker 3: Undead.
- 24:46Speaker 1: Okay, tell him your name.
- 24:48Speaker 4: Emily.
- 24:50Speaker 1: Okay, so the zombie outbreak happens, obviously. Look around.
- 24:53Speaker 6: And you're building your stronghold. You're building a compound. You're
- 24:57Speaker 6: loading up everything you need. You can only take three
- 24:59Speaker 6: movies with you for the rest of who knows how long.
- 25:03Speaker 6: What movies do you take to your stronghold?
- 25:08Speaker 10: Return of the Jedi.
- 25:09Speaker 1: All right. Royal Tenenbaums. different direction all.
- 25:16Speaker 10: Right yeah um oh gosh i.
- 25:21Speaker 6: Like the range everybody else is throwing horror movies around
- 25:23Speaker 6: today so yeah you know.
- 25:25Speaker 10: Um oh that's a tough one um i don't know
- 25:32Speaker 10: yeah it's like there's so many to choose from you
- 25:36Speaker 10: know it's.
- 25:38Speaker 5: A tough question i.
- 25:39Speaker 1: Know it's a tough question i don't know if i
- 25:40Speaker 1: can answer my own question.
- 25:42Speaker 10: Um yeah i don't know what the third.
- 25:44Speaker 1: One would be Spin the wheel. What's the first one
- 25:46Speaker 1: you think of?
- 25:47Speaker 10: The Godfather.
- 25:50Speaker 1: All right. You can't go wrong with The Godfather.
- 25:54Speaker 6: I figure that's what it'll come down to when the
- 25:55Speaker 6: zombie outbreak happens. You just got to start grabbing stuff.
- 25:58Speaker 6: So the first one you grab, Godfather, you know.
- 26:01Speaker 1: Can't go wrong with that. That's true.
- 26:02Speaker 10: It's a classic.
- 26:04Speaker 7: It is.
- 26:05Speaker 6: And people die, so you'll still have that going on
- 26:07Speaker 6: around you. You'll feel at home, you know.
- 26:09Speaker 10: Yeah, that's true.
- 26:14Speaker 6: The zombie motorcade going by. Police on quad racers here.
- 26:19Speaker 5: Makes way for the zombie president.
- 26:21Speaker 1: That's kind of what it's like, yeah. Zombie motorcade.
- 26:24Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 26:25Speaker 5: Zombie Ronald Reagan is driving through town, and, you know,
- 26:28Speaker 5: it's very crowded.
- 26:29Speaker 1: Well, he can get shot and keep living, so he
- 26:31Speaker 1: might be the undead.
- 26:32Speaker 5: I think he is. He looked undead before he was dead.
- 26:35Speaker 7: Wow.
- 26:36Speaker 5: A lot of presidents before they died looked just zombie-like
- 26:42Speaker 5: in general.
- 26:43Speaker 8: Yeah.
- 26:44Speaker 6: But, you know, as movie geeks, you have to like
- 26:46Speaker 6: him because he was in movies. And he liked Star Wars,
- 26:50Speaker 6: I mean.
- 26:51Speaker 1: I wonder. A lot of people probably won't even get that.
- 26:55Speaker 1: Kids listening are just like, that dude likes Star Wars? Anyway.
- 27:00Speaker 5: I wonder if Ronald Reagan ever saw any zombie movie
- 27:03Speaker 5: and liked it. I don't know why that question popped
- 27:05Speaker 5: in my head, but that would be an interesting little
- 27:07Speaker 5: piece of trivia to find out. You know, like maybe,
- 27:10Speaker 5: you know, he was, I don't know what he was
- 27:13Speaker 5: doing as far as politics in the 70s or something, but,
- 27:15Speaker 5: you know, maybe he caught Don of the Dead on
- 27:17Speaker 5: TV and kind of dug it. Who knows?
- 27:20Speaker 1: By then he was, like, governor of California probably.
- 27:22Speaker 5: Yeah, governor of California.
- 27:24Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, yeah. That happened to Arnold, so you never know.
- 27:28Speaker 1: President Arnold right around the corner.
- 27:30Speaker 6: Just a minor adjustment in the laws and we can
- 27:32Speaker 6: have President Arnold.
- 27:33Speaker 7: Sure, sure.
- 27:34Speaker 3: God help us.
- 27:36Speaker 1: You'd vote for President Arnold Schwarzenegger, wouldn't you?
- 27:40Speaker 10: Sorry, I didn't know we were.
- 27:43Speaker 1: This is happening.
- 27:43Speaker 5: No, that was the right response.
- 27:46Speaker 1: Dumbfounded. No. God help us.
- 27:50Speaker 10: What was the question that I just failed to answer
- 27:53Speaker 10: because I was so preoccupied by the zombie apocalypse?
- 27:55Speaker 1: We made a connection between the governor of California becoming president,
- 27:59Speaker 1: so President Arnold Schwarzenegger. It's a minor adjustment in the laws.
- 28:03Speaker 1: We can make it happen. Are you down with that?
- 28:05Speaker 10: How did this thread go there? I don't even know
- 28:08Speaker 10: how we got here.
- 28:08Speaker 5: We should probably get back to zombies.
- 28:10Speaker 1: I don't even know. I don't know.
- 28:13Speaker 5: President, zombies, it's a mess.
- 28:16Speaker 1: I give up. They're getting cameras out. It might be
- 28:22Speaker 1: time for zombies.
- 28:22Speaker 8: I don't know.
- 28:23Speaker 1: It's pretty exciting.
- 28:26Speaker 6: Random people are walking by, so that means zombies must
- 28:29Speaker 6: be pretty close.
- 28:31Speaker 2: It has been established that persons who have recently died...
- 28:34Speaker 2: have been returning to life and committing acts of murder.
- 28:38Speaker 1: The zombie outbreak has happened. Oh, God, the humanity.
- 29:03Speaker 9: Come with me Take a ride to victory Come on baby.
- 29:14Speaker 5: And duck inside Nowhere to run, nowhere to.

- 30:33Speaker 9: Don't be slow.
- 30:42Speaker 14: Okay, so we're back.
- 31:03Speaker 1: And as promised, we're going to continue on with our
- 31:06Speaker 1: normal episode of Movie Meltdown in the middle of the
- 31:09Speaker 1: carnage here.
- 31:11Speaker 6: We just witnessed the crazy zombie... Some of it was
- 31:17Speaker 6: an attack. Some of it was just people strolling by.
- 31:19Speaker 6: It was interesting. We do have a little bit of
- 31:22Speaker 6: blood on us. Any other takes on this nonsense we
- 31:27Speaker 6: just witnessed?
- 31:28Speaker 5: I am a bit upset about the blood. But, no,
- 31:32Speaker 5: this was awesome. Like, they had the circling helicopter... They
- 31:38Speaker 5: had the SWAT team, like, ready on the side by
- 31:41Speaker 5: Dairy Queen in case shit got real.
- 31:43Speaker 1: Yeah, that wasn't a pretend SWAT team.
- 31:46Speaker 5: I think probably the best, like, zombie performances by far were, like,
- 31:51Speaker 5: the little kids dressed up as zombies. Like, they were vicious.
- 31:56Speaker 5: They really did. Like, it looked like they were real
- 31:59Speaker 5: children zombies, like, out to kill me, and it was terrifying.
- 32:02Speaker 8: Yeah.
- 32:04Speaker 5: But, yeah, I didn't see that coming. A lot of
- 32:06Speaker 5: strange and unique zombie outfits. I did see a zombie
- 32:11Speaker 5: in a tutu and a cowboy hat.
- 32:14Speaker 1: There's all kinds.
- 32:16Speaker 5: Very simple, but I have to give him credit for originality.
- 32:19Speaker 5: That's very strange. It makes sense.
- 32:24Speaker 10: If you were a zombie, you wouldn't necessarily know how
- 32:26Speaker 10: to dress yourself.
- 32:27Speaker 5: That's true. I didn't think of it in terms of, like,
- 32:29Speaker 5: a zombie looking for clothes. I always think of it as, like,
- 32:32Speaker 5: the person who died was wearing those clothes. So, like,
- 32:34Speaker 5: that person must have been a weirdo, lives in his basement,
- 32:38Speaker 5: Buffalo Bill sort.
- 32:40Speaker 1: That's what I was thinking. I was, like, I was
- 32:42Speaker 1: trying to picture the circumstances in which the person was
- 32:45Speaker 1: wearing a tutu and put on that cowboy hat right
- 32:48Speaker 1: as zombie attack happened.
- 32:50Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 32:51Speaker 1: You never know.
- 32:52Speaker 5: So, yeah, who knows? It's just.
- 32:55Speaker 5: It just makes you realize that, yeah, you know, there
- 32:57Speaker 5: are the weirdos in the world who dress up, you know,
- 33:01Speaker 5: in basements. They're part of the zombie population as well,
- 33:05Speaker 5: so you have to.
- 33:06Speaker 1: This whole thing is built around weirdos that dress up.
- 33:09Speaker 5: It's something to keep in mind, and I appreciate him
- 33:12Speaker 5: reminding me of that.
- 33:14Speaker 6: Which, again, is my favorite part of our take on
- 33:16Speaker 6: it is, as usual, we showed up in our normal attire.
- 33:19Speaker 1: We're just dressed like geeks like we always are, so.
- 33:23Speaker 5: As you know, the zombie walk is an educational experience.
- 33:26Speaker 1: It always is that.
- 33:27Speaker 10: Primarily.
- 33:28Speaker 5: For everyone involved. I feel like I've learned something tonight.
- 33:31Speaker 5: And I will cherish knowing that I got to see,
- 33:37Speaker 5: you know, a zombie cowboy tutu man thing. I don't
- 33:43Speaker 5: know what.
- 33:44Speaker 1: And cough and go-karts.
- 33:45Speaker 3: Right, right.
- 33:47Speaker 8: Yeah.
- 33:47Speaker 5: But it was awesome, the whole thing.
- 33:49Speaker 10: Yeah, the kids are definitely my favorite part because they're
- 33:51Speaker 10: just inherently creepy being a child zombie. There's no performative
- 33:54Speaker 10: aspect necessary.
- 33:56Speaker 6: That's what makes a good child actor is that natural
- 34:01Speaker 6: thing going on. You grow up and you lose that.
- 34:05Speaker 10: You try too hard. There was some trying too hard tonight,
- 34:08Speaker 10: by the way.
- 34:09Speaker 1: Yeah, that usually kind of comes with it, too.
- 34:11Speaker 6: You get people who aren't actors trying to act, so
- 34:14Speaker 6: you get that.
- 34:15Speaker 3: It's usually how it goes.
- 34:19Speaker 1: All right, I guess we can roll into our geek
- 34:22Speaker 1: activities here. I was trying to think of some stuff
- 34:25Speaker 1: I'd done because we haven't really addressed much lately. So
- 34:28Speaker 1: I think going back a few weeks, I did watch
- 34:31Speaker 1: The Girl from the Naked Eye. Is anyone familiar with
- 34:35Speaker 1: this movie?
- 34:36Speaker 10: I have no idea what this is.
- 34:38Speaker 1: It just came out like maybe the last month or so.
- 34:42Speaker 1: It was just made this year. And it's got Jason
- 34:47Speaker 1: Yee is our lead. And actually does a decent job.
- 34:50Speaker 6: Like for somebody I didn't know of, and I kind
- 34:54Speaker 6: of looked, I guess he's done a little bit of
- 34:56Speaker 6: work in the past. But again, not really a big name.
- 34:58Speaker 6: He carries it better than I expected for like a...
- 35:02Speaker 6: It may have gotten a theatrical run somewhere, but I
- 35:04Speaker 6: was assuming it was straight to DVD. So that's where
- 35:07Speaker 6: I saw it. It went immediately to Redbox somewhere. So yeah,
- 35:13Speaker 6: it's interesting because it... Number one, it's the cover of
- 35:17Speaker 6: the movie, and I'll get back to that. But as
- 35:19Speaker 6: far as what it is, it's trying really hard to
- 35:25Speaker 6: be like.
- 35:25Speaker 1: A film noir kind of thing.
- 35:27Speaker 6: It's film noir, but at the same time, it wants
- 35:31Speaker 6: to be a martial arts, kick you in the head
- 35:33Speaker 6: kind of movie.
- 35:35Speaker 1: Oh, mashup.
- 35:36Speaker 6: It's a different... And the thing is, in the end,
- 35:39Speaker 6: it's trying... I think that's the part that's difficult, is
- 35:42Speaker 6: it's trying... So hard to be Phil Noah. I mean,
- 35:45Speaker 6: it does the voiceover. It is him figuring out a murder.
- 35:49Speaker 6: I mean, it's trying really, really hard to be that.
- 35:52Speaker 6: Almost a little too heavy-handed on that end of it.
- 35:55Speaker 6: But in the end, it's actually got a lot of
- 35:59Speaker 6: decent action stuff.
- 36:00Speaker 1: It almost delivers on the action. He is seemingly trained
- 36:04Speaker 1: in it.
- 36:05Speaker 6: What's funny is it doesn't follow any rules of a
- 36:08Speaker 6: normal martial arts movie. Usually it's kind of specific as
- 36:11Speaker 6: to what they're trying to do. Like, this one is
- 36:14Speaker 6: mixed martial arts at best. Like, it's the most use
- 36:17Speaker 6: of that term because they'll just be, like, straight-up kung
- 36:21Speaker 6: fu action, and then they'll just, like, punch them in
- 36:23Speaker 6: the face like it's a bar fight, and then they'll
- 36:26Speaker 6: headbutt them, and then my favorite part is then sometimes
- 36:28Speaker 6: they just shoot each other.
- 36:29Speaker 1: Like, they'll just throw the rules out the window and
- 36:31Speaker 1: just pull out guns. They're just like, okay, I mean,
- 36:34Speaker 1: I guess this is how it works in the real world.
- 36:36Speaker 6: You try to win at any cost. You shoot people
- 36:39Speaker 6: if you need to. But it was interesting that, yeah,
- 36:42Speaker 6: it didn't even... pick a specific type of martial arts
- 36:44Speaker 6: or anything it was just barroom ball one minute then
- 36:48Speaker 6: a somewhat disciplined form of kung fu the next it
- 36:52Speaker 6: was very interesting uh as to the the cast the
- 36:57Speaker 6: other two people in the one again i've been guilty
- 36:59Speaker 6: of this twice in the past like two months now
- 37:02Speaker 6: i've watched a movie specifically because i went is that
- 37:04Speaker 6: dominique swain all right wow now i gotta watch it
- 37:08Speaker 6: it's got dominique swain in it.
- 37:10Speaker 1: I continue to be befuddled at every movie she's in.
- 37:13Speaker 10: I didn't even know she was still working.
- 37:16Speaker 6: She's turning up in a lot of stuff lately. But
- 37:19Speaker 6: at the same time, she... And this one has, like,
- 37:22Speaker 6: a scene and a half. Like, she is not at
- 37:24Speaker 6: all important in this movie. But what's even funnier... I mean,
- 37:29Speaker 6: to me, that's kind of like... She's way in the back.
- 37:31Speaker 6: Because the poster is, like, a big shot of Jason there.
- 37:34Speaker 6: And he's doing his, like, kung fu.
- 37:35Speaker 1: You know, he's Mr.
- 37:36Speaker 6: Tough Guy stance in the front. And then you've got
- 37:38Speaker 6: her second character. And then off in the background is Dominique.
- 37:40Speaker 6: So I'm like, okay, she's not going to be a lead.
- 37:42Speaker 6: But the second person, the one that's almost as big
- 37:45Speaker 6: as our lead, is Miss Sasha Gray. That in and
- 37:51Speaker 6: of itself, I was like, okay.
- 37:53Speaker 10: So now we're figuring out why you watch this movie.
- 37:56Speaker 1: No. Not that you can prove.
- 37:59Speaker 6: And if I was going to, that's not where I
- 38:01Speaker 6: would start. You've got to give her this.
- 38:03Speaker 5: If you're going to pick a porn actress, porno actress
- 38:06Speaker 5: to act in like a real movie she is obviously
- 38:09Speaker 5: will be the best choice of of anyone probably it.
- 38:13Speaker 6: Doesn't look like most scary porn actresses so.
- 38:16Speaker 5: If you have to go with porn actress in your
- 38:18Speaker 5: movie like you know at least don't go scrape the
- 38:20Speaker 5: bottom barrel go sasha gray you know do the best
- 38:23Speaker 5: you can yeah so it could be worse.
- 38:28Speaker 1: But no that was my thing is like i know
- 38:29Speaker 1: she's trying to get into legit acting she's trying to
- 38:32Speaker 1: pull a tracy lords i guess and become a actress
- 38:36Speaker 1: So I was like, okay, this is interesting. We'll see
- 38:39Speaker 1: what they do with her in this.
- 38:41Speaker 6: That's even funnier, especially because she's almost as big as
- 38:44Speaker 6: he is on the poster there and the cover art.
- 38:48Speaker 6: She has maybe a line. Basically, the door opens. She's
- 38:53Speaker 6: in an elevator. He gets on the elevator. She asks
- 38:55Speaker 6: him a question. Some sort of craziness ensues on the elevator.
- 39:00Speaker 6: She stands there in the elevator the whole time.
- 39:02Speaker 1: He gets out. The doors close.
- 39:04Speaker 6: That's the entire performance of Sasha Gray in the movie.
- 39:10Speaker 6: Sorry to spoil that for you. That's probably more of
- 39:12Speaker 6: a heads up to you, though. If you're looking for
- 39:14Speaker 6: a hot Sasha Gray movie, this is not what you're
- 39:17Speaker 6: looking for.
- 39:18Speaker 10: So she's sort of a glorified extra.
- 39:20Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 39:20Speaker 6: Well, I guess it's more of a cameo. I mean,
- 39:23Speaker 6: I guess if you know who she is, you're like, hey, look,
- 39:24Speaker 6: there's Sasha Gray. But the fact that they're marketing it,
- 39:27Speaker 6: like the fact that she is massively featured on that
- 39:30Speaker 6: poster slash video box that just like they're trying to
- 39:34Speaker 6: sucker people in with, hey, look at this Sasha Gray movie.
- 39:36Speaker 6: And I'm like, she's got no scene. She is a
- 39:40Speaker 6: cameo at best. So that I think I thought was
- 39:43Speaker 6: more entertaining was the marketing angle on that movie. Because, yeah,
- 39:47Speaker 6: at least Dominique has a good amount of speaking lines.
- 39:51Speaker 6: And she's in an extra portion later. She comes back.
- 39:54Speaker 6: So she's got a little bit of screen time. And
- 39:56Speaker 6: she's way off in the background there. But, yeah, they
- 39:59Speaker 6: heavily market Sasha. So I thought that was interesting. Maybe
- 40:04Speaker 6: more than the movie.
- 40:07Speaker 1: Oh, let's see. What else? Other than that, let's see.
- 40:10Speaker 1: I did watch Cypher. Have you seen Cypher?
- 40:14Speaker 5: Wait, who's in that?
- 40:16Speaker 1: Um, Jeremy Northup? Lucy Liu?
- 40:21Speaker 5: What's it? Okay, I probably haven't seen it. Lucy, once
- 40:23Speaker 5: you named Lucy Liu, I was like, I've only seen
- 40:25Speaker 5: maybe two movies from getting to end that she's been in.
- 40:28Speaker 1: Well, that's the, I mean, I remembered this mostly because
- 40:32Speaker 1: of the director.
- 40:32Speaker 6: The director is Vincenzo Natalia, who actually did Cube and
- 40:38Speaker 6: sort of made a name for himself pretty early on.
- 40:40Speaker 8: Yeah.
- 40:41Speaker 4: Oh.
- 40:41Speaker 5: So Cube wasn't, wasn't his first movie.
- 40:43Speaker 1: Cube was his first movie. And then this is like a,
- 40:47Speaker 1: like right in the middle.
- 40:47Speaker 6: Like he did two other, like one that I watched
- 40:51Speaker 6: the trailer for and it's, I think it came after
- 40:53Speaker 6: Cypher and it looks like a really, like a much
- 40:55Speaker 6: smaller movie.
- 40:56Speaker 1: It looks like one that he did almost independent.
- 40:58Speaker 6: Like, and then like Cypher was, I guess the full,
- 41:01Speaker 6: I think he'd done some short films, but otherwise I
- 41:03Speaker 6: think it's like the followup to Cube and it's a
- 41:05Speaker 6: much bigger, like just production wise. Like it's, it's, you know,
- 41:10Speaker 6: It's still got a relatively low budget, but it's got
- 41:12Speaker 6: two recognizable actors as leads. And then as you go
- 41:17Speaker 6: into it, it's got pretty impressive... Again, for a minimal budget,
- 41:20Speaker 6: it's got some pretty impressive sets. And some of the
- 41:23Speaker 6: effects that they do, they have to work in some
- 41:26Speaker 6: things that are kind of weird as it goes on.
- 41:28Speaker 1: And for a minimal budget, he's done some pretty good stuff.
- 41:31Speaker 6: Again, I like the last thing he did, notably because
- 41:35Speaker 6: we did a whole episode on it.
- 41:37Speaker 1: He also is the director of Splice. Did you see Spice?
- 41:41Speaker 10: I enjoyed Spice very much.
- 41:43Speaker 1: I like Spice. It's a fun movie.
- 41:45Speaker 6: I think it knows when to cross the lines and
- 41:48Speaker 6: be kind of ridiculous, and I think it has fun
- 41:51Speaker 6: with that. But at the same time, it's really well made, too.
- 41:53Speaker 6: So I think that's, he really is kind of a
- 41:56Speaker 6: talented director. But this one is just sort of weird.
- 41:59Speaker 6: It's like corporate espionage kind of thing. Like it's, Jeremy
- 42:05Speaker 6: Northup's like this super mild-mannered kind of guy, and then
- 42:07Speaker 6: he like He's secretly, like, his wife doesn't even know
- 42:10Speaker 6: he's going in for these job interviews to get on
- 42:13Speaker 6: with this mysterious company. And then the mysterious company makes
- 42:16Speaker 6: him go through all these weird tests. And then he, like,
- 42:19Speaker 6: gets on. And then basically they're sending him to meetings.
- 42:22Speaker 6: And he thinks he's, like, recording stuff and, like, trying
- 42:24Speaker 6: to get information about other companies.
- 42:27Speaker 1: And he's trying to steal their information. Again, all of
- 42:30Speaker 1: this is so generic.
- 42:31Speaker 6: And then as you get into it, I guess that's
- 42:33Speaker 6: part of the plot. And then there's, like, other companies, like,
- 42:36Speaker 6: trying to... and doubles back around. In the end, I
- 42:40Speaker 6: think that was my problem with it. It tries so
- 42:42Speaker 6: hard to be tricky that it overcomplicates it to the
- 42:45Speaker 6: point you kind of don't even care anymore. I think
- 42:49Speaker 6: if he would have taken a few of the twists out,
- 42:51Speaker 6: it probably would have been a more interesting movie.
- 42:53Speaker 1: If you would have.
- 42:53Speaker 6: Focused a little more on the characters, because I think
- 42:57Speaker 6: he does a good job as far as he's the
- 42:59Speaker 6: super mom-manor guy and he realizes he's becoming a different...
- 43:03Speaker 6: They give him a new name and they send him
- 43:04Speaker 6: off on these jobs and he's in a different town
- 43:06Speaker 6: and he doesn't know anybody. and he realizes he can
- 43:08Speaker 6: become a different person. So he actually, like, adopts a
- 43:12Speaker 6: new personality along the way, and that's kind of interesting.
- 43:15Speaker 6: And Lucy Liu's just sort of this weird, mysterious person
- 43:18Speaker 6: working for some higher-up somewhere, some group. You know, it's, like,
- 43:23Speaker 6: all of it's so, like, confusing midway in that eventually
- 43:27Speaker 6: it all, you know, pans out. But, yeah, halfway in,
- 43:30Speaker 6: you're just like, I don't know what a lot of
- 43:32Speaker 6: what they're trying to do here, but it's kind of interesting,
- 43:34Speaker 6: so I'm sticking with it, so... It's certainly not perfect,
- 43:37Speaker 6: but it's well made. Again, it shows he's definitely a
- 43:41Speaker 6: good director. Especially for it to be a second movie.
- 43:44Speaker 5: He's definitely a director I need to look out for.
- 43:47Speaker 5: Because I really like Splice. I really like Cube a lot.
- 43:52Speaker 5: This is about all he's... I didn't know he did
- 43:55Speaker 5: that in between. I honestly thought that Splice was his
- 43:59Speaker 5: follow-up to Cube.
- 43:59Speaker 1: I think he did two other ones.
- 44:01Speaker 5: I feel like Cube.
- 44:05Speaker 5: Like the individual moments of suspense are so great. Like
- 44:09Speaker 5: some of the most suspenseful scenes that's like I've seen
- 44:11Speaker 5: in any movie, like in, you know, that I would say,
- 44:14Speaker 5: you know, the last 10 years or so, like really,
- 44:17Speaker 5: you know, gut wrenching scenarios where these people have to
- 44:20Speaker 5: go through these death traps, but as a movie, it just,
- 44:23Speaker 5: it doesn't come together so well. Like, you know, understandably
- 44:27Speaker 5: because it's a lower budget kind of, you know, first
- 44:29Speaker 5: feature that some of the acting's a little rough and everything.
- 44:33Speaker 5: but it's a really cool original concept, but as a movie,
- 44:36Speaker 5: like it didn't quite gel together and splice. I liked
- 44:40Speaker 5: a lot. Cause it felt like, like this is the
- 44:42Speaker 5: only like weird since Cronenberg is probably never going to
- 44:46Speaker 5: direct like a really weird, you know, Cronenberg, Cronenberg like
- 44:50Speaker 5: type movie sort of gotten away from that now.
- 44:52Speaker 13: Yeah.
- 44:52Speaker 8: Yeah.
- 44:53Speaker 5: This is, I'm like, this is probably the closest we'll
- 44:54Speaker 5: get to that. Um, But at the same time, I
- 44:57Speaker 5: did think it was a little underwhelming. Actually, some people
- 45:00Speaker 5: thought it got too weird. I think it should have
- 45:02Speaker 5: gone even weirder. The ending kind of... just like it.
- 45:06Speaker 1: Gets a lot more traditional and it does.
- 45:08Speaker 5: It becomes more like a structure just you know we
- 45:10Speaker 5: standard monster beave movie which is fine like it worked
- 45:13Speaker 5: well on that level but I'm he's just one of
- 45:15Speaker 5: those directors like I've seen like so much that I
- 45:17Speaker 5: love in the movies that I've seen so far I'm
- 45:20Speaker 5: I think he has like a masterpiece in him.
- 45:22Speaker 1: Yeah well that one the more interesting part is the
- 45:24Speaker 1: middle where they're sort of questioning everything they do and
- 45:26Speaker 1: yeah crossing lines they don't need to be crossing several
- 45:30Speaker 1: right so yeah I I He definitely is really interesting.
- 45:33Speaker 6: And I think you can see, like, he's sort of
- 45:36Speaker 6: him getting his legs and kind of getting a feel
- 45:38Speaker 6: for things. Because even there's a big improvement, I think,
- 45:41Speaker 6: in the way that Cypher plays versus Splyce. I think
- 45:44Speaker 6: even in that, you know, a couple of years and
- 45:47Speaker 6: making another movie in between, he gets better.
- 45:49Speaker 1: So I am kind of looking forward to seeing where
- 45:51Speaker 1: he goes with, you know, the next movie.
- 45:53Speaker 13: I agree, yeah.
- 45:55Speaker 1: So that's most of what I have watched. Are you
- 45:58Speaker 1: next up?
- 45:59Speaker 5: Yeah, I mean... I've just been kind of on, I
- 46:03Speaker 5: guess because for obvious reasons, I've been kind of going
- 46:06Speaker 5: back and watching some Tony Scott movies. I missed half
- 46:09Speaker 5: his stuff. He's just one of those directors, like, I
- 46:12Speaker 5: always knew, like, you know, I liked the movies I
- 46:15Speaker 5: saw of his. And I knew I hadn't seen half
- 46:18Speaker 5: of them. I was like, oh, I'll get to them later. Like,
- 46:19Speaker 5: I never thought much of them. But as I'm reading
- 46:22Speaker 5: all these tributes to him and, you know, the movies
- 46:24Speaker 5: of his that people are mentioning... I'm like, you know what?
- 46:28Speaker 5: I really need to see The Last Boy Scout. I
- 46:30Speaker 5: need to see Unstoppable. Because apparently these are really fun, like,
- 46:34Speaker 5: just well-directed action movies. And, you know, I'd like to
- 46:37Speaker 5: check them out. So I've been kind of doing some backtracking. Like,
- 46:40Speaker 5: I rewatched Men on Fire, which I didn't know what
- 46:42Speaker 5: to think of at first. But I think it's a really, like,
- 46:45Speaker 5: people didn't give that movie enough credit for being, like,
- 46:48Speaker 5: a hard-boiled, like, just fucking intense revenge movie. Like, it
- 46:54Speaker 5: goes all the way as far as the, like... like
- 46:57Speaker 5: almost Korean revenge, you know, like that level of intensity.
- 47:02Speaker 5: And it's a big, for a big, for like a
- 47:04Speaker 5: Hollywood studio movie. Like he, it's, it's kind of amazing
- 47:07Speaker 5: to see how far like Denzel Washington, Washington goes with
- 47:12Speaker 5: the ass kicking in that one. So I thought that
- 47:14Speaker 5: was really underrated. And that one seems like it got
- 47:17Speaker 5: more respect as it went on. Like it didn't do
- 47:19Speaker 5: well when it opened. And like, I was like everyone
- 47:22Speaker 5: else when I first saw it that, you know, when
- 47:24Speaker 5: I first saw how crazy he was, that, that was
- 47:26Speaker 5: kind of, I think that movie is interesting because it
- 47:28Speaker 5: marks a weird turning point in his movie making where
- 47:31Speaker 5: he did this weird like saturated move. I don't know
- 47:34Speaker 5: what the effect is, but it's like a blurring of
- 47:36Speaker 5: the camera and it shifts and there's like a speed
- 47:38Speaker 5: up and it slows back down. And then like when
- 47:40Speaker 5: people are talking, you see words like text on the
- 47:42Speaker 5: screen as they say lines, which I think only Man
- 47:46Speaker 5: on Fire did that. But as far as like that
- 47:48Speaker 5: camera thing movement, like he did it in Domino. He
- 47:50Speaker 5: did it in Taking a Pill Hound.
- 47:51Speaker 14: Yeah.
- 47:52Speaker 5: Remake. I think he did an Unstoppable remake. also but
- 47:56Speaker 5: it's weird no i thought like that was i liked
- 47:59Speaker 5: it better the second time around and uh and i
- 48:01Speaker 5: forgot that mickey rourke was in it and then that
- 48:04Speaker 5: made me want to go like re-watch mickey rourke's older
- 48:07Speaker 5: movies from the 80s so and so i ended up
- 48:09Speaker 5: re-watching angel heart and barfly nice um which i like
- 48:13Speaker 5: those movies a lot i think those might be his
- 48:15Speaker 5: best i haven't watched maybe his two best i don't
- 48:18Speaker 5: know I haven't.
- 48:19Speaker 1: Watched it since, but Barfly was really hard to get
- 48:22Speaker 1: through at the time.
- 48:23Speaker 5: It was so depressing. For some reason, I also thought
- 48:25Speaker 5: of Barfly because we're talking outside a bar here and
- 48:28Speaker 5: we just got done with a zombie walk. And I
- 48:30Speaker 5: feel like Barfly, he behaves like a zombie in that movie.
- 48:35Speaker 5: He had to, as far as acting research, looked at
- 48:38Speaker 5: a lot of zombie movies and how they move and stuff.
- 48:42Speaker 5: Instead of eating people, he just beats people up and
- 48:45Speaker 5: gets drunk a lot. But basically, the whole movie is
- 48:47Speaker 5: just Mickey Rourke, you know. trudging around like a zombie
- 48:49Speaker 5: in LA and it's, it's really interesting and it's, it's
- 48:53Speaker 5: honestly what probably one of my favorite movies he was
- 48:56Speaker 5: in and Angel Heart is just, you know, just, it's
- 48:59Speaker 5: a whole different thing. It's a whole different thing but
- 49:01Speaker 5: it's still, it creeps, you know, it gives me chills
- 49:03Speaker 5: when I watch it still.
- 49:05Speaker 1: I think it's visually, I mean.
- 49:07Speaker 5: Yeah, Alan Parker, I mean, he's, I like the way
- 49:09Speaker 5: his movies look. I mean, he's, he gets a lot
- 49:11Speaker 5: of shit as a director, I think, but, uh, that's definitely,
- 49:15Speaker 5: a lot of good stuff especially after i think he
- 49:17Speaker 5: did uh like he did midnight express and uh some
- 49:22Speaker 5: other famous movie in the 70s early 80s and then
- 49:25Speaker 5: kind of tapered off but i think angel heart is
- 49:27Speaker 5: like up there with his best even though it's like
- 49:29Speaker 5: later 80s but yeah that's those are just been kind
- 49:32Speaker 5: of like nothing in specific just kind of re-watching a
- 49:35Speaker 5: bunch of shit this past week?
- 49:36Speaker 10: Side note on Barfly, like, I guess Bukowski wanted Sean
- 49:40Speaker 10: Penn for it, and I think about that a lot, like,
- 49:42Speaker 10: what a different movie that would have been, and what
- 49:44Speaker 10: an inferior movie it would have been.
- 49:45Speaker 5: Yeah, I don't think, I think Sean Penn, to be honest,
- 49:48Speaker 5: I think he was at a mode, judging from the
- 49:50Speaker 5: other movies he was in back in that period, like,
- 49:52Speaker 5: he was kind of hamming it up in a lot
- 49:54Speaker 5: of the stuff he was doing. Unlike the rest of
- 49:55Speaker 5: his career, when.
- 49:56Speaker 10: He's known for being understated and nuanced.
- 49:58Speaker 1: So subtle.
- 49:59Speaker 5: Yeah, okay, that's true. He does, I mean, he goes,
- 50:02Speaker 5: I just, I am Sam just popped in my head.
- 50:04Speaker 5: I'm like, yeah, you're right. Okay, I am Sam. I'll
- 50:07Speaker 5: give you that. But like, yeah, I think, you know,
- 50:09Speaker 5: he was kind of this, I feel like every movie
- 50:11Speaker 5: in the 80s he was in, he was always this
- 50:12Speaker 5: hothead who was screaming his head off. And he just,
- 50:16Speaker 5: Mickey Rourke, like, I'm sure he would never want to
- 50:19Speaker 5: admit it. And if I ever, you know, told him
- 50:20Speaker 5: this to his face, he'd probably punch me out. It's weird.
- 50:23Speaker 5: I don't know Mickey Rourke. He probably lives thousands of
- 50:26Speaker 5: miles away from me. But it's always like, I have
- 50:27Speaker 5: this weird, intimidating feeling. I don't want to talk shit
- 50:29Speaker 5: about Mickey Rourke. He'll find me. Like, he's an intense guy.
- 50:32Speaker 5: But no, like, I feel like he probably, you know,
- 50:34Speaker 5: if any actor had been there or could relate to Bukowski,
- 50:39Speaker 5: it would have been Mickey Rourke, you know? He, you know,
- 50:42Speaker 5: he knows what it's like to probably be fucked up
- 50:44Speaker 5: in an alleyway, having just gotten his ass kicked, drunk
- 50:47Speaker 5: off his ass, and then getting up the next day
- 50:50Speaker 5: in his own vomit and walking right back into the bar.
- 50:52Speaker 7: You know?
- 50:52Speaker 10: But still being beautiful. Like, there's something so.
- 50:54Speaker 5: Lovely and soulful about him. That was probably the last
- 50:55Speaker 5: movie before he got, like, he went into boxing. I mean,
- 50:58Speaker 5: that was... It was like 89?
- 50:59Speaker 1: Not physically, right?
- 51:01Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 51:01Speaker 1: He's lost that now.
- 51:03Speaker 5: And the irony, that's so weird. Like that movie Johnny Handsome,
- 51:06Speaker 5: like that's so ironic. What he looks like in that movie,
- 51:10Speaker 5: like the makeup in that movie, like dude, that's exactly
- 51:14Speaker 5: what you look like in the year 2012. I want
- 51:15Speaker 5: to get in a time machine and be like, but again, yeah,
- 51:20Speaker 5: even saying that, I'm like, oh God, make your work.
- 51:22Speaker 5: I hope he never hears me.
- 51:24Speaker 8: Seriously.
- 51:24Speaker 10: He is a lover. He is not a fighter.
- 51:26Speaker 5: He is a lover. He's a sweet guy. He's real cool.
- 51:29Speaker 1: And he still turns in great performances.
- 51:32Speaker 10: Oh, no.
- 51:33Speaker 5: He's one of the greatest.
- 51:34Speaker 1: I won't pretend like I haven't talked shit about the
- 51:36Speaker 1: way he's looked in the last several years. But, I mean,
- 51:38Speaker 1: he's still a good actor. Oh, yeah.
- 51:40Speaker 5: He's a great actor.
- 51:41Speaker 1: Even through all that.
- 51:42Speaker 4: You know?
- 51:43Speaker 1: It's like even aside from you should be like repulsed
- 51:46Speaker 1: by just looking at him. He's such a good actor,
- 51:48Speaker 1: he still wins you back over, and that's impressive.
- 51:50Speaker 5: Yeah, and I mean, like, and he's, you know, he's
- 51:52Speaker 5: given some, like, he's phoned in some performances, understandably, like
- 51:55Speaker 5: in the 90s, and even in the 80s, he was
- 51:57Speaker 5: kind of miscast, just because I think, you know, he
- 52:00Speaker 5: didn't know, because he never, he was that guy from
- 52:03Speaker 5: the streets, he didn't really, he never wanted to be
- 52:05Speaker 5: that professional actor, you know, with an agent, you know,
- 52:09Speaker 5: he didn't want to go through all that, so I mean,
- 52:11Speaker 5: I feel like he would just get stuff on a whim,
- 52:14Speaker 5: and not really feel like going into, like, what was
- 52:17Speaker 5: that IRA movie where you had to have the Irish accent?
- 52:20Speaker 5: It was atrocious. Like, his accent was so bad. But
- 52:24Speaker 5: at the same time, if you got past the accent, like, yeah,
- 52:26Speaker 5: I really believe him as a character. He's that good. But, yeah,
- 52:30Speaker 5: he's just awesome. And Barfly is up there, definitely. It's
- 52:33Speaker 5: one of his best performances. Angel Heart, too, I think so.
- 52:37Speaker 6: That was just a weird, depressing time in Hollywood, I guess,
- 52:40Speaker 6: because I'm pretty sure, if I'm remembering correctly.
- 52:44Speaker 1: In that span of a couple years, we had Barfly
- 52:47Speaker 1: and Ironweed come out.
- 52:49Speaker 5: Oh, now what's Ironweed?
- 52:51Speaker 1: I've never heard of that one. It's kind of that
- 52:53Speaker 1: same movie. I remember finding both of those hard to
- 52:55Speaker 1: get through because it's just two people drunk in a
- 52:58Speaker 1: bar the whole movie. Ironweed was like the Jack Nicholson version.
- 53:03Speaker 1: It was like him and Meryl Streep, wasn't it?
- 53:05Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 53:08Speaker 6: Again, it's just depressing stories and being drunk in a
- 53:10Speaker 6: bar your whole life.
- 53:11Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 53:12Speaker 1: These are just... These are rough watches. Also.
- 53:15Speaker 5: Those are my favorite movies.
- 53:17Speaker 10: Seriously, my favorite movies are Drunk People in Bars.
- 53:20Speaker 5: They're so great. Like, the character... They're such great character studies.
- 53:24Speaker 5: And also, let's not forget, Frank Stallone, his moment of glory.
- 53:29Speaker 1: Can we forget?
- 53:30Speaker 5: As the guy who's just like, you want to get
- 53:32Speaker 5: beat up, bum?
- 53:33Speaker 1: You know.
- 53:34Speaker 5: the whole movie he's just Mickey Rourke's just talking shit
- 53:37Speaker 5: to him you know challenging him to a fight and
- 53:39Speaker 5: it's just great but yeah that was just I did
- 53:44Speaker 5: not I mean for like until I guess before The
- 53:48Speaker 5: Wrestler I had no idea like the kind like as
- 53:51Speaker 5: far as his movie resume like what he did before
- 53:56Speaker 5: this whole you know later era of Mickey Rourke with
- 53:58Speaker 5: a different face these awesome movies like Barfly and Angel
- 54:01Speaker 5: Heart and Johnny Handsome And what else? I guess Pauper
- 54:08Speaker 5: Greenwich Village. That was a really good one. I just
- 54:12Speaker 5: watched Rumblefish, which I had mixed. I have some issues with,
- 54:15Speaker 5: but it was still awesome.
- 54:17Speaker 1: I want to go back and rewatch. I barely remember.
- 54:19Speaker 5: He's definitely the best part of the movie. The first,
- 54:22Speaker 5: I'd say the opening 30 minutes are just.
- 54:25Speaker 5: Amazing like one of the like it it starts out
- 54:28Speaker 5: like there's a great movie in that first 30 minutes
- 54:30Speaker 5: and then it just turns weird and has this abrupt
- 54:33Speaker 5: awkward ending that i didn't think resonated or made sense
- 54:37Speaker 5: but yeah mickey rourke was awesome he his character like
- 54:40Speaker 5: he was he was colorblind and deaf which was weird
- 54:45Speaker 5: uh which explained why he was you know he's talking
- 54:47Speaker 5: like this you know why why you gotta get fucked
- 54:49Speaker 5: up all the time it's like dude take it up
- 54:52Speaker 5: a few decibels you're like oh he's deaf okay that's
- 54:54Speaker 5: I understand.
- 54:55Speaker 6: No offense to any deaf listeners we had.
- 54:58Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 55:00Speaker 10: Sorry.
- 55:00Speaker 5: Sorry. I don't want to insult the deaf or anything,
- 55:04Speaker 5: but I just, Mickey Rourke was just mysteriously talking in
- 55:07Speaker 5: a low volume for the first half of the movie
- 55:08Speaker 5: and not till like in the middle where they like, oh,
- 55:11Speaker 5: by the way, he's deaf. I'm like, oh, okay. Well,
- 55:13Speaker 5: I didn't know that. I thought they just had this,
- 55:16Speaker 5: the mic, the boom mic was being shitty or something.
- 55:18Speaker 13: I don't know.
- 55:20Speaker 5: But yeah, those are some great movies. And he's still
- 55:23Speaker 5: like the wrestler. It's an amazing movie. Man on Fire,
- 55:26Speaker 5: I just watched that. He had a tiny part in that,
- 55:29Speaker 5: but he seemed like a... I don't even remember. He
- 55:33Speaker 5: was like a bad guy.
- 55:34Speaker 1: The Expendables.
- 55:35Speaker 5: The Expendables.
- 55:36Speaker 1: Is he even.
- 55:37Speaker 5: In the second one?
- 55:38Speaker 8: I don't know.
- 55:38Speaker 5: Everybody else is.
- 55:39Speaker 1: I don't know.
- 55:39Speaker 5: Everyone else is.
- 55:40Speaker 7: He might as well be. I'm sure he came back.
- 55:41Speaker 5: He shows up at some point.
- 55:43Speaker 10: I just love, I always think that it's impossible for
- 55:45Speaker 10: Hollywood to make another movie that he can be in
- 55:48Speaker 10: looking the way he does, but they do. I love
- 55:49Speaker 10: that they're like catering to him in every role.
- 55:51Speaker 5: Oh yeah. They're like, we love you, Mickey. Like he's a, no, seriously.
- 55:54Speaker 5: He's like a, what do you call it? What's the word? Um,
- 55:58Speaker 5: can't think of the right word. Um, not a staple,
- 56:01Speaker 5: but just, uh, it's like they look out for him,
- 56:05Speaker 5: you know, they, they want, they want one of their own.
- 56:07Speaker 8: Yeah.
- 56:07Speaker 5: He's one of their own. He's like all the, this
- 56:10Speaker 5: generation of actors or producers, they're like, oh, I grew
- 56:13Speaker 5: up watching Mickey Rourke. He's, you know, he's one of
- 56:15Speaker 5: the best. Like, he was up there with De Niro
- 56:16Speaker 5: for a time, and he just kind of, you know, disappeared.
- 56:20Speaker 5: Let's hire him.
- 56:21Speaker 6: He's got one of those comeback stories that I think
- 56:24Speaker 6: Hollywood kind of likes.
- 56:25Speaker 5: He is the comeback story.
- 56:25Speaker 1: And audiences really like. So I think, yeah, that carried
- 56:28Speaker 1: him a while.
- 56:29Speaker 5: Forget John Travolta.
- 56:30Speaker 6: Yeah, it's getting to a point he's going to have
- 56:32Speaker 6: to do something not expendable to sort of keep it going.
- 56:36Speaker 1: But, yeah, that was a couple of years after that.
- 56:38Speaker 6: Everybody kind of loved him just because it was a
- 56:40Speaker 6: comeback story.
- 56:42Speaker 13: Yeah.
- 56:42Speaker 5: The wrestler, I mean, that was almost mythic how hard
- 56:45Speaker 5: he came back with that movie. It was amazing.
- 56:47Speaker 10: He made that movie, I thought.
- 56:49Speaker 1: Oh, yeah.
- 56:49Speaker 10: I don't know if you guys saw Big Fan. Was
- 56:51Speaker 10: that the name of the film?
- 56:51Speaker 7: Yes.
- 56:52Speaker 10: Patton Oswalt, the writer did after that. I felt like
- 56:55Speaker 10: that movie, well, see, I didn't like it. And I
- 56:57Speaker 10: felt like that movie was the movie the wrestler would
- 56:59Speaker 10: have been in.
- 57:00Speaker 5: It needed a director.
- 57:01Speaker 10: It had the gravity of Mickey Rourke.
- 57:02Speaker 5: And it needed Mickey Rourke. You know, Patton Oswalt was
- 57:04Speaker 5: fine in it and everything, but it needed Aronofsky and
- 57:08Speaker 5: It definitely needed Mickey Rourke to be that amazing on
- 57:10Speaker 5: that level.
- 57:11Speaker 10: I kind of hate Aronofsky, so I'm giving.
- 57:13Speaker 5: It away to Mickey Rourke.
- 57:14Speaker 1: Oh, okay.
- 57:15Speaker 5: Well, see, I know. I was iffy on Aronofsky before
- 57:19Speaker 5: The Wrestler. I think between this and Black Swan, I
- 57:22Speaker 5: hope he stays with this raw kind of handheld visual style.
- 57:26Speaker 5: I definitely prefer it over, say, The Fountain or Requiem.
- 57:32Speaker 5: I don't know why. Maybe it gives more room for
- 57:35Speaker 5: actors to be like give these performances like Natalie Portman.
- 57:38Speaker 5: And I don't know what you guys thought of her
- 57:40Speaker 5: and black Swan. I thought it was good. What did you,
- 57:43Speaker 5: what did you, what were your thoughts?
- 57:44Speaker 10: It was really over the top for me, which I can,
- 57:46Speaker 10: it was, it was like, if somebody commits to being
- 57:48Speaker 10: over the top and they're like, it's a very director,
- 57:50Speaker 10: then I'm awesome with that. If they're like, I'm a
- 57:52Speaker 10: Harvard educated intellectual and this film is actually important. I'm
- 57:55Speaker 10: not okay with that. Like it was a silly movie.
- 57:58Speaker 5: I thought it's very silly. It's very sensationalistic. I think
- 58:01Speaker 5: maybe because I saw in theaters, And it's like maybe
- 58:04Speaker 5: because of the big screen seeing that stuff. I was like, whoa,
- 58:06Speaker 5: my mind is blown. Maybe if I were to see
- 58:07Speaker 5: it on TV, I'd be like, oh, this is kind
- 58:09Speaker 5: of– he's blowing smoke up our ass with a lot
- 58:11Speaker 5: of this.
- 58:11Speaker 10: But I remember being in the theater and people snickering
- 58:13Speaker 10: at moments they weren't supposed to snicker. I still don't know.
- 58:17Speaker 5: How– I love, though– I mean, in this kind of way, like,
- 58:21Speaker 5: I do think he wasn't– he wasn't being as pretentious
- 58:26Speaker 5: as I thought he could have been like he wasn't
- 58:28Speaker 5: afraid to be he wasn't the fountain pretentious yeah it
- 58:30Speaker 5: wasn't the fountain pretentious he wasn't afraid to go like
- 58:32Speaker 5: just skeezy like you know like showgirls level of just
- 58:36Speaker 5: like we're gonna actually you know unabashedly show you this
- 58:39Speaker 5: just gratuitous you know long sex scene between these you
- 58:42Speaker 5: know two hot actresses and you know I'm not gonna
- 58:45Speaker 5: you know it doesn't mean anything it's just there you
- 58:46Speaker 5: know like he didn't he wasn't pretending to it you
- 58:49Speaker 5: know it wasn't too high-minded I guess it wasn't afraid
- 58:52Speaker 5: to just be batshit Which, I was fine with. The fountain,
- 58:56Speaker 5: you know, that was just too, I don't even want
- 59:00Speaker 5: to talk about it.
- 59:01Speaker 1: I think he's just like that. I think, because everything
- 59:04Speaker 1: I've seen of his, and I've missed a few, I think,
- 59:06Speaker 1: but in general, I think he's just, I think he
- 59:09Speaker 1: is very talented, but at the same time, he can
- 59:12Speaker 1: be super pretentious. Oh, yeah. You've got to be kind
- 59:15Speaker 1: of okay with.
- 59:16Speaker 6: Knowing what you're getting yourself into with his movies, because
- 59:19Speaker 6: I know people that love what he's doing, and then
- 59:22Speaker 6: people that are totally turned off by the really over-the-top,
- 59:25Speaker 6: in-your-face stuff that it comes and goes.
- 59:28Speaker 1: Like, he doesn't have to do that.
- 59:30Speaker 6: He can do very normal scenes and then he can
- 59:32Speaker 6: do stuff that is just chewing on the cellulite.
- 59:35Speaker 5: Yeah, he definitely, he definitely gives the whole idea of, like,
- 59:38Speaker 5: you know, I'm an artist, that kind of director. Like,
- 59:42Speaker 5: he definitely, he's the reason that that's, like, mentioned in
- 59:45Speaker 5: the pejorative, you know? Like, he's the worst example of that.
- 59:49Speaker 1: But yet, still kind of talented.
- 59:50Speaker 5: Like, art directors.
- 59:51Speaker 1: If he was a total hack, I would just call
- 59:52Speaker 1: him out. But I'm like, Some of this stuff looks
- 59:55Speaker 1: really good. Even when it's going over the top and
- 59:57Speaker 1: trying too hard, it looks good along the way.
- 59:59Speaker 5: Exactly. Like, real art directors who I don't think are
- 1:00:01Speaker 5: showy at all but, like, are legitimate, like, they put
- 1:00:05Speaker 5: out good art and they're not, like, in your face
- 1:00:07Speaker 5: about how great an art... Like, people like David Cronenberg,
- 1:00:09Speaker 5: I'm sure they get pissed off when a guy like
- 1:00:11Speaker 5: Aronofsky hugs all the, you know, the faming... attention or whatever.
- 1:00:16Speaker 12: I don't know.
- 1:00:17Speaker 1: It sounds like he gets pissed off at a lot
- 1:00:18Speaker 1: of directors lately. Did you guys hear that, Owen?
- 1:00:21Speaker 5: Oh, well, you know, that's to be expected from him.
- 1:00:23Speaker 1: He was kind of... He's been.
- 1:00:25Speaker 5: Talking shit about.
- 1:00:26Speaker 6: He was giving shit to Nolan for doing a superhero movie.
- 1:00:31Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 1:00:32Speaker 1: He was being kind of a snob about it.
- 1:00:33Speaker 5: In his defense, I do realize that, like, yeah, okay,
- 1:00:36Speaker 5: you know, I like Batman, I like The Dark Knight Rises,
- 1:00:39Speaker 5: but I do think a lot of what that was
- 1:00:42Speaker 5: was him... having his release date of this movie, he
- 1:00:44Speaker 5: knew wasn't going to make money. And he's just on
- 1:00:48Speaker 5: Team Cosmopolis. His whole cast is like, we're rooting for
- 1:00:50Speaker 5: this movie.
- 1:00:51Speaker 1: You know what?
- 1:00:51Speaker 5: We're in competition with this other movie. We'll talk shit.
- 1:00:53Speaker 5: That's part of it. We want it to make money.
- 1:00:55Speaker 5: And I feel like he wouldn't be outwardly talking shit
- 1:00:58Speaker 5: about Batman if it weren't that his movie was coming
- 1:01:00Speaker 5: out at the same time. It's almost unfair. He's like,
- 1:01:02Speaker 5: damn it.
- 1:01:04Speaker 1: Well, I mean, he had to know when that was
- 1:01:05Speaker 1: going out.
- 1:01:06Speaker 5: Well, I mean, yeah, I mean, he.
- 1:01:08Speaker 1: We've all known for two or three years now.
- 1:01:11Speaker 5: Yeah, but he didn't plan on his movie being released.
- 1:01:13Speaker 10: Has anybody seen Cosmopolis?
- 1:01:15Speaker 5: I'm so... No, I'm gonna hopefully see it here in
- 1:01:17Speaker 5: the next week. I'm gonna plan to go to Trip Chicago,
- 1:01:21Speaker 5: and it's playing somewhere up there while I'm there. I definitely...
- 1:01:24Speaker 5: I'm so stoked about this movie. More than I think
- 1:01:26Speaker 5: most people are, because it's been getting kind of mediocre...
- 1:01:29Speaker 5: I love.
- 1:01:30Speaker 10: The reviews it's been getting, by the way. Yeah.
- 1:01:32Speaker 5: They're so, like, cliched, like, he's a bloodsucker, only this
- 1:01:36Speaker 5: time a capitalist bloodsucker. Like, it's like, oh, really? You're
- 1:01:40Speaker 5: not going to try any harder than that?
- 1:01:43Speaker 10: I was on an airplane. This is the excuse that
- 1:01:45Speaker 10: I'm going to give for reading an Us magazine, but
- 1:01:47Speaker 10: I was on an airplane, and there happened to be
- 1:01:49Speaker 10: an Us magazine nearby, and I read the review section,
- 1:01:53Speaker 10: and the review was so just blissfully clueless, like so confused,
- 1:01:58Speaker 10: like really confounded as to why Edward, is that the
- 1:02:01Speaker 10: character name, would be in this film. They were like,
- 1:02:04Speaker 10: we don't get it. It's like nowhere near as good
- 1:02:07Speaker 10: as Twilight.
- 1:02:08Speaker 5: How come he never.
- 1:02:11Speaker 5: How come he never get out limo when he get haircut?
- 1:02:16Speaker 5: Why don't he, he should be vampire more. Where's the van? Like,
- 1:02:19Speaker 5: I don't know. That's just, I just imagine that reviewer
- 1:02:22Speaker 5: talking in like a Cro-Magnon and just, you know, caveman speak.
- 1:02:27Speaker 5: Just confuse that. They're not singing to Twilight movie.
- 1:02:29Speaker 1: It'd be like, they're just like us guys. They're just
- 1:02:31Speaker 1: like us. Edward, he shops at the grocery. He buys
- 1:02:34Speaker 1: his cars on Craigslist, which is true by the way.
- 1:02:39Speaker 14: Yeah.
- 1:02:40Speaker 7: Right.
- 1:02:41Speaker 5: But I've just been watching, like, those... You know how, like,
- 1:02:44Speaker 5: when a movie is released now, there'll be, like, a
- 1:02:45Speaker 5: series of, like, five clips on YouTube, like, just released
- 1:02:49Speaker 5: just to market it. And I'm always the person who, like,
- 1:02:52Speaker 5: before I see a movie, I watch all those clips.
- 1:02:54Speaker 5: It's bad. Like, I shouldn't. I mean, I should go
- 1:02:56Speaker 5: in cold. But I'm just... My anticipation is so great
- 1:02:58Speaker 5: because I love Cronenberg. You know, I get... I got
- 1:03:01Speaker 5: stoked for A Dangerous Method, which I was probably the
- 1:03:04Speaker 5: one person who got excited for that movie.
- 1:03:06Speaker 14: I did, too.
- 1:03:07Speaker 5: And it was good. It really was.
- 1:03:08Speaker 8: But.
- 1:03:10Speaker 5: Like I saw a clip from Cosmopolis where he was
- 1:03:12Speaker 5: just talking about, he was having this conversation with this
- 1:03:14Speaker 5: guy in his limo about what if, you know, the U.S.
- 1:03:20Speaker 5: currency was replaced with the rat, like with a rat,
- 1:03:23Speaker 5: the animal. And they were just coming up with all
- 1:03:24Speaker 5: these like jokingly about like. It's like, what about dead
- 1:03:27Speaker 5: rats or pregnant rats? It's like, yes, the Euro was
- 1:03:30Speaker 5: converted into white rats. And they're just like, they're joking
- 1:03:34Speaker 5: about it. I'm like, this movie looks awesome. Just that
- 1:03:36Speaker 5: scene alone, it just looked weird.
- 1:03:38Speaker 1: That's weird. I don't get it. I just want to
- 1:03:41Speaker 1: know what kind of clothes they're wearing and where they
- 1:03:43Speaker 1: got their hair done.
- 1:03:44Speaker 7: Oh, sorry.
- 1:03:45Speaker 5: I thought it.
- 1:03:45Speaker 10: Was us, Mike.
- 1:03:48Speaker 5: It amuses me, too, because you know so much of
- 1:03:50Speaker 5: his Twilight fan base. They're just going to go into this.
- 1:03:54Speaker 5: They're just going to walk into this movie blindly. not
- 1:03:57Speaker 5: knowing the weird LSD trip of a movie they're getting into,
- 1:04:04Speaker 5: and they're just going to hate it.
- 1:04:06Speaker 1: Anybody that walks into a movie blind, it's their own fault.
- 1:04:09Speaker 5: Especially a David Cronenberg movie blind. That's got to be
- 1:04:11Speaker 5: the worst experience. If you're not a David Cronenberg fan,
- 1:04:14Speaker 5: and you don't know you're about to watch a David
- 1:04:15Speaker 5: Cronenberg movie, and you pay money to see it, the rage.
- 1:04:19Speaker 5: I can't even begin to understand the anger you would feel.
- 1:04:24Speaker 5: I don't know, because I'm a David Cronenberg fan, but
- 1:04:26Speaker 5: I can appreciate how angering, like, enraging that must be.
- 1:04:30Speaker 1: It's the same people that just back, well, now nobody
- 1:04:33Speaker 1: does that.
- 1:04:34Speaker 6: I guess you could flip through the red box, but
- 1:04:36Speaker 6: when they would just go to a movie, like a
- 1:04:38Speaker 6: video store, and pick stuff up based on the box,
- 1:04:41Speaker 6: and like, I know that actor, and watch that. I mean,
- 1:04:43Speaker 6: if you're going in that line, it's your own fault.
- 1:04:46Speaker 5: Can you imagine, like, how that would have been in 1995? Like,
- 1:04:49Speaker 5: the theater for Judge Dredd was packed, so you went
- 1:04:52Speaker 5: in the next theater to see Crash. Like, oh, movie
- 1:04:54Speaker 5: about car crashes. Oh, this is going to be pretty cool.
- 1:04:56Speaker 5: And just, like, how that person must have just wanted
- 1:04:59Speaker 5: to kill someone. And, like, just you can imagine just
- 1:05:02Speaker 5: arguing with a box office guy, trying to get his
- 1:05:04Speaker 5: money back. I feel like Cronenberg has done that to
- 1:05:07Speaker 5: a lot of people. Except that one. But never me
- 1:05:09Speaker 5: because I've always been with him.
- 1:05:10Speaker 1: That one out of 100 that was like, this is hot.
- 1:05:15Speaker 1: Do that again. Crash the car again.
- 1:05:17Speaker 5: Crash the car, yeah.
- 1:05:19Speaker 1: Do that thing with your leg in a brace. Never mind.
- 1:05:23Speaker 5: Yeah, that one weirdo they had to kick out. The
- 1:05:26Speaker 5: crash weirdo. He kept showing up to every screening.
- 1:05:29Speaker 1: Shut up, I like this movie. Anyway.
- 1:05:33Speaker 5: I feel like I could do a whole episode on
- 1:05:35Speaker 5: just Cronenberg movies.
- 1:05:36Speaker 1: I'm sure we could.
- 1:05:38Speaker 5: Oh, man. For me, it always goes back to Cronenberg
- 1:05:43Speaker 5: for me. My love of movies, I'll just go on
- 1:05:46Speaker 5: to these Cronenberg kicks. He won't make a movie for
- 1:05:48Speaker 5: a while, and I'll move on to other... directors and
- 1:05:51Speaker 5: then when he comes out with something i'll just re-watch
- 1:05:53Speaker 5: his shit and you know i'll buy into the hype
- 1:05:56Speaker 5: for the release i'll see in theaters and it's it's
- 1:05:58Speaker 5: it's everything's you know everything's right everything's right again with
- 1:06:02Speaker 5: the movie world um i'm just glad he's still out
- 1:06:05Speaker 5: there making his weird shit you know he could have
- 1:06:08Speaker 5: he could have been like a martin scorsese not that
- 1:06:11Speaker 5: martin scorsese movies are terrible you know anything but but
- 1:06:14Speaker 5: he could have like gone to the hollywood studio system
- 1:06:16Speaker 5: and done these big budget things and I'm glad he never.
- 1:06:20Speaker 1: He's definitely changed in recent years.
- 1:06:22Speaker 5: He's changed, but he's never compromised. But he's still his
- 1:06:24Speaker 5: own weird self to some extent. Oh, yeah. He's even weirder.
- 1:06:28Speaker 5: I would argue that he's weirder than he's ever been.
- 1:06:31Speaker 5: These clips I've seen of Kalamopoulos are fucking weird. I
- 1:06:33Speaker 5: don't know if you've seen these scenes. I haven't, but
- 1:06:35Speaker 5: just because it's a little... It's going to be a
- 1:06:37Speaker 5: fucking weird movie.
- 1:06:38Speaker 1: Like, he can hide it better now. Like, he sort
- 1:06:40Speaker 1: of sneaks it in on the audience.
- 1:06:43Speaker 8: Yeah.
- 1:06:43Speaker 1: Whereas before, it was big, you know, plastic stuff on
- 1:06:47Speaker 1: your face.
- 1:06:47Speaker 5: You know, it was body armor. Well, he has a
- 1:06:48Speaker 5: perfect system. He's able to do that because, like, actors
- 1:06:51Speaker 5: love him. Like, all the, you know, actors, you see
- 1:06:54Speaker 5: them interview, like, oh, I always wanted to be in
- 1:06:55Speaker 5: a David Cronenberg movie because he gets these amazing performances. Like, career...
- 1:07:00Speaker 5: making performances out of actors. So they'll, you know, these amazing, sorry.
- 1:07:04Speaker 10: Keira Knightley.
- 1:07:05Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 1:07:05Speaker 7: Oops.
- 1:07:07Speaker 1: Everyone, but these like, you know, she's hurty. She's hardly
- 1:07:12Speaker 1: getting any roles these days.
- 1:07:13Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 1:07:14Speaker 5: It's just, you know, just out on the streets, you know,
- 1:07:16Speaker 5: their handout, it's crazy, but like, you know, these big
- 1:07:20Speaker 5: name Hollywood's, you know, stars like Pattinson, you know, and they're,
- 1:07:23Speaker 5: they decide to be in a Cronenberg movies, you know, and,
- 1:07:27Speaker 5: his fan base has no fucking idea who david cronenberg
- 1:07:29Speaker 5: is they've never seen one of his movies and uh
- 1:07:34Speaker 5: yeah they get suckered into paying a movie ticket and
- 1:07:35Speaker 5: that's how he gets to keep going it's almost a
- 1:07:38Speaker 5: scam but.
- 1:07:39Speaker 1: A whole new breed of fans that don't understand.
- 1:07:41Speaker 5: What he's doing it's not cynical it's it's very he
- 1:07:44Speaker 5: he makes good stuff he's very passionate about what he
- 1:07:47Speaker 5: does and he loves he loves making movies and i
- 1:07:50Speaker 5: love his movies.
- 1:07:53Speaker 11: But uh yeah did we get to yours yet No.
- 1:07:56Speaker 10: Would you like to?
- 1:07:57Speaker 1: We probably should. Okay.
- 1:07:59Speaker 10: I don't know. I've seen several films in theaters in
- 1:08:03Speaker 10: the last couple weeks. I guess the one I'll talk
- 1:08:05Speaker 10: about is Ruby Sparks. Did anybody see that one? That
- 1:08:08Speaker 10: was the one I enjoyed the most.
- 1:08:10Speaker 1: Okay.
- 1:08:10Speaker 10: Are you familiar with this film?
- 1:08:13Speaker 6: I've already forgotten it. I've heard the title, and now
- 1:08:15Speaker 6: I'm forgetting which one it is.
- 1:08:17Speaker 10: It's the Zoe Kazan movie. She wrote it and did
- 1:08:21Speaker 10: not direct it, but wrote it and stars in it
- 1:08:23Speaker 10: with her, I guess, real-life love, Paul Dano. It is fantastic. Like,
- 1:08:28Speaker 10: I knew nothing going in. The premise is sort of
- 1:08:32Speaker 10: familiar because it's essentially the same as, oh, my gosh,
- 1:08:36Speaker 10: I've already forgotten the name of the movie. What's the
- 1:08:38Speaker 10: Will Ferrell movie? Everything Must Go? A writer and.
- 1:08:43Speaker 1: Stranger than fiction.
- 1:08:44Speaker 10: Stranger than fiction, yes.
- 1:08:46Speaker 1: I actually like that, yeah.
- 1:08:47Speaker 10: Yeah, and I loved that film. That film I thought
- 1:08:49Speaker 10: was brilliant. It was one of those films where I
- 1:08:50Speaker 10: walked out of the theater and thought, okay, I hope
- 1:08:53Speaker 10: that whoever wrote this is like a very elderly person
- 1:08:56Speaker 10: who has been writing screenplays for years and years and really...
- 1:09:00Speaker 10: knows what they're doing because this is genius this is
- 1:09:02Speaker 10: a perfect screenplay and i went home and imdb'd him
- 1:09:05Speaker 10: as like some 25 year old dude i was like
- 1:09:06Speaker 10: seriously like.
- 1:09:08Speaker 5: That's just discouraging when you find out like you watch
- 1:09:10Speaker 5: a great movie like oh who wrote yeah like Like,
- 1:09:13Speaker 5: who wrote this script? Oh, like, oh, and, you know,
- 1:09:15Speaker 5: probably some Hollywood, yeah, like you said, veteran, it's like,
- 1:09:18Speaker 5: it's someone my age, and you're like, God.
- 1:09:20Speaker 10: Or younger.
- 1:09:21Speaker 5: Like, you know, people like, people like Lena Dunham, just like,
- 1:09:23Speaker 5: I mean, I love her.
- 1:09:24Speaker 10: Oh, that girl is so depressing.
- 1:09:26Speaker 5: I love girls. It's like one of the best shows
- 1:09:27Speaker 5: on TV, but that's all the more reason for me
- 1:09:29Speaker 5: to just be depressed about like, I'm like, I want
- 1:09:32Speaker 5: to write a script. I'm like, Oh, but you know,
- 1:09:34Speaker 5: it will never be as like truthful and amazing as,
- 1:09:37Speaker 5: you know.
- 1:09:38Speaker 10: We cannot allow her to be the standard for 23
- 1:09:40Speaker 10: year olds though.
- 1:09:41Speaker 5: Like none of us will.
- 1:09:42Speaker 1: Be in the morning. It's like, that's true.
- 1:09:45Speaker 5: It's, it's definitely her own world that she writes about. Uh,
- 1:09:49Speaker 5: but yeah.
- 1:09:49Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 1:09:50Speaker 10: But yeah, but this film, so Zoey Kazan, I'd seen
- 1:09:53Speaker 10: her in a lot of films, and you recognize her,
- 1:09:55Speaker 10: but you're like, I've seen her in indie stuff, but
- 1:09:58Speaker 10: you can't really remember what. And she's sort of a
- 1:10:00Speaker 10: mousy-looking girl, and she's Ilya Kazan's granddaughter, which, number one,
- 1:10:04Speaker 10: is badass in and of itself.
- 1:10:05Speaker 5: I did not know that.
- 1:10:06Speaker 3: Yes, she is.
- 1:10:07Speaker 5: That is badass.
- 1:10:08Speaker 10: And actually, after I saw that she wrote the movie
- 1:10:10Speaker 10: and saw Kazan, I was like, she's got to be related,
- 1:10:13Speaker 10: because that kind of genius just.
- 1:10:15Speaker 5: Oh, man. That's got to be cool. You make a movie.
- 1:10:19Speaker 5: With your girlfriend, and she wrote the script. The whole
- 1:10:21Speaker 5: process is like, yeah, we're awesome. We're this cool Hollywood couple.
- 1:10:26Speaker 5: We're making a movie. You're writing it. You're the granddaughter
- 1:10:29Speaker 5: of this awesome dude. I mean, it just sounds like
- 1:10:33Speaker 5: it was a fun process.
- 1:10:34Speaker 10: And it's such a star turn for her. I mean,
- 1:10:36Speaker 10: she did it the smartest way possible. First of all,
- 1:10:38Speaker 10: she writes herself as sort of like the beautiful girl.
- 1:10:41Speaker 10: And so, and she really convinces you of that. I mean,
- 1:10:44Speaker 10: not that she's not pretty, but like, you know, I
- 1:10:45Speaker 10: never thought, I never saw her as being, she's not
- 1:10:48Speaker 10: conventionally beautiful.
- 1:10:49Speaker 1: That's not how Hollywood would cast her.
- 1:10:51Speaker 11: Yes.
- 1:10:51Speaker 10: And so you watch this movie where she's the dream girl.
- 1:10:54Speaker 10: And then halfway through, you're like, wait, she is kind
- 1:10:56Speaker 10: of pretty. Wait, she's actually really unusually, oh my God,
- 1:11:00Speaker 10: she's beautiful. And by the end of it, like you're
- 1:11:02Speaker 10: in love with her too. So that was fun. freaking
- 1:11:04Speaker 10: smart of her. The other thing that's amazing, I mean,
- 1:11:07Speaker 10: she definitely wrote it as an acting showpiece, I think,
- 1:11:10Speaker 10: for both of them. I mean, not to be cynical
- 1:11:12Speaker 10: about it, but I mean, there's so many.
- 1:11:15Speaker 1: Hey, you know, if it works, it works. Yeah.
- 1:11:17Speaker 10: There are so many scenes where she gets to show
- 1:11:19Speaker 10: so much range and she totally pulls it off. I mean,
- 1:11:22Speaker 10: she is phenomenal in this film as is Paul Dano,
- 1:11:25Speaker 10: but Paul Dano, you know, kind of always is something. Um,
- 1:11:29Speaker 10: but it's, it's really, it's interesting and it's smart and
- 1:11:31Speaker 10: it's hilarious and it's sweet and it's touching. And like,
- 1:11:35Speaker 10: I was bowled over by it, how original it was
- 1:11:38Speaker 10: for a film that everybody sort of thought they'd already
- 1:11:40Speaker 10: seen the premise. I, I.
- 1:11:42Speaker 5: Just a couple days ago, I was taking the bus
- 1:11:47Speaker 5: home from work, and they passed by Village 8 Theaters,
- 1:11:51Speaker 5: and they came to a stop like, you know, I
- 1:11:53Speaker 5: can either just go straight home because I'm tired, or
- 1:11:55Speaker 5: I could see Ruby Sparks while it's still in theaters.
- 1:11:57Speaker 5: And I really sat there and debated it, and now
- 1:12:00Speaker 5: you're telling me how awesome it is. I really regret
- 1:12:02Speaker 5: not getting off the bus and seeing the movie. Because
- 1:12:06Speaker 5: I think you saw it at Village 8, right?
- 1:12:08Speaker 10: Well, I live in Lexington, so I saw it at the.
- 1:12:09Speaker 5: Village 8 Theater, yeah.
- 1:12:10Speaker 3: Right.
- 1:12:11Speaker 5: I definitely have to see it, though. Because I've heard
- 1:12:14Speaker 5: nothing but great stuff as far as reviews.
- 1:12:16Speaker 1: It's not what I read in Us Magazine.
- 1:12:18Speaker 10: Oops!
- 1:12:20Speaker 5: Damn you, Us.
- 1:12:21Speaker 10: Where are the vampires?
- 1:12:25Speaker 5: What? Every movie, even Twilight, where are the vampires?
- 1:12:30Speaker 1: Expendables 2, where are the vampires? How come these old
- 1:12:34Speaker 1: guys aren't killing vampires? I'm not sure why we're slamming
- 1:12:39Speaker 1: Us so hard this episode, but Because they suck. Until
- 1:12:43Speaker 1: they want to sponsor us. If they'd like to sponsor us,
- 1:12:46Speaker 1: send the money right over us, magazine.
- 1:12:48Speaker 10: Change our team.
- 1:12:49Speaker 1: We'll pretend like you're awesome.
- 1:12:52Speaker 5: Speaking of Paul Dano, by the way, is it Dano
- 1:12:55Speaker 5: or Dano?
- 1:12:55Speaker 10: Oh, I don't know.
- 1:12:56Speaker 5: I hope it's Dano.
- 1:12:57Speaker 10: I just say Dano because it sounds cooler.
- 1:12:58Speaker 5: I would assume Dano because Dano sounds like it's Danish.
- 1:13:01Speaker 1: Based on Hawaii Five-0.
- 1:13:03Speaker 8: Yeah.
- 1:13:03Speaker 5: It's Dano. Someone almost ruined one of my favorite silent movies,
- 1:13:11Speaker 5: the passion of Jonah arc by saying that the actress
- 1:13:15Speaker 5: in it looked like Paul Dano. I'm like, Holy shit.
- 1:13:18Speaker 5: You're right. Like, I'm like, she's beautiful. But at the
- 1:13:20Speaker 5: same time, I'm like, she looks like Paul Dano. Like,
- 1:13:23Speaker 5: damn it. Like, why did you have to say that?
- 1:13:25Speaker 5: Like every time I see that it's going to be
- 1:13:26Speaker 5: in my head, but it's weird. Like you don't think that,
- 1:13:29Speaker 5: but until you see like two side by side, you're like,
- 1:13:31Speaker 5: Oh my God, it's very jarring. But that just made
- 1:13:34Speaker 5: me think, um, Just because she's so beautiful, like that actress,
- 1:13:38Speaker 5: I can't remember her name, she's so beautiful, but at
- 1:13:40Speaker 5: the same time, she looks like Paul Dano.
- 1:13:42Speaker 1: It's kind of.
- 1:13:43Speaker 5: It's a weird contradiction, but yeah. It's a very random
- 1:13:46Speaker 5: thing that just made me think of that.
- 1:13:48Speaker 1: Anything else?
- 1:13:49Speaker 5: No other movie geeks.
- 1:13:50Speaker 10: Yeah, I saw... I'm hesitant to even say this out loud,
- 1:13:55Speaker 10: because it's like the most beloved film in theaters right now,
- 1:13:58Speaker 10: and I found it a little manipulative.
- 1:14:00Speaker 5: No, no, no. I want you to leave this out,
- 1:14:03Speaker 5: because I might be able to join in on your disappointment.
- 1:14:05Speaker 10: How do we feel about Beasts of the Southern Wild?
- 1:14:09Speaker 5: Okay. I saw that on a date, and she was
- 1:14:17Speaker 5: a lot more in love with it than I was,
- 1:14:19Speaker 5: and I didn't want to trash it. In front of her,
- 1:14:22Speaker 5: because she was so... She loved it so much, and,
- 1:14:25Speaker 5: you know, she was like, oh, I'm so glad you're
- 1:14:27Speaker 5: doing that, and I didn't want to be like, ooh,
- 1:14:29Speaker 5: it was awful. Yeah, and just like, you know, go all,
- 1:14:32Speaker 5: you know, just ooh, you know, movie critic asshole on her. But, no,
- 1:14:37Speaker 5: I did have some issues with it. I thought it
- 1:14:39Speaker 5: was very good. It definitely is. It's better than most
- 1:14:43Speaker 5: of the movies I've seen this year, but it's not
- 1:14:46Speaker 5: like I kind of... The hype, it's one of those
- 1:14:48Speaker 5: things where the hype killed it, and it wasn't... as
- 1:14:51Speaker 5: magical or amazing or profound as the hype would have
- 1:14:56Speaker 5: you believe. It's just kind of... It's definitely an interesting concept.
- 1:15:01Speaker 5: It's definitely like whatever the director was imagining in his head,
- 1:15:05Speaker 5: he definitely saw it through with this movie. He definitely
- 1:15:07Speaker 5: got to have this complete weird fantasy sort of social
- 1:15:11Speaker 5: reality universe fully played out the way he wanted to,
- 1:15:16Speaker 5: but it just didn't do anything for me. I didn't
- 1:15:19Speaker 5: relate to... Like I not relate, but like the, it,
- 1:15:22Speaker 5: I don't know. People were hyping up with like Pan's
- 1:15:24Speaker 5: Labyrinth and stuff like that. Maybe that's why I will.
- 1:15:28Speaker 5: It's not Pan's Labyrinth, but anyway, I'm rambling about it.
- 1:15:30Speaker 5: What were you, what were you, what were your thoughts?
- 1:15:32Speaker 10: I just, I don't know. I, I just, I felt
- 1:15:35Speaker 10: just manipulated by like, it was too much for me.
- 1:15:38Speaker 10: And maybe that was the problem. Maybe I just shut
- 1:15:39Speaker 10: down at some point.
- 1:15:41Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 1:15:41Speaker 10: It was just so heavy handed.
- 1:15:43Speaker 5: It hammers down the emotions and the intense like moments, uh, And.
- 1:15:49Speaker 10: There's just wave after wave after wave of it. And
- 1:15:53Speaker 10: it's relentless. And I just felt like it was squeezing
- 1:15:56Speaker 10: tears out of my eyes.
- 1:15:57Speaker 5: That I didn't want or that I didn't deserve. Did
- 1:16:02Speaker 5: it feel, like, claustrophobic to you? Like, watching, like, I
- 1:16:04Speaker 5: don't know if it was the camera movements, but something like,
- 1:16:07Speaker 5: it was going for this kind of tree of life
- 1:16:09Speaker 5: kind of, you know, in there. Like, I don't know
- 1:16:11Speaker 5: how that handheld kind of capturing the beauty of every
- 1:16:14Speaker 5: moment kind of look. But something about, like, it felt claustrophobic. Like,
- 1:16:18Speaker 5: you would think that kind of style would be freeing and, like,
- 1:16:21Speaker 5: really immersive. But it had the opposite effect on me
- 1:16:23Speaker 5: in a way.
- 1:16:24Speaker 9: Yeah, I agree.
- 1:16:25Speaker 5: It felt enclosed. Like, maybe it's because there were a
- 1:16:27Speaker 5: lot of close-ups and not always on, like, faces of actors,
- 1:16:31Speaker 5: which is what, you know, usually close-ups are for. It
- 1:16:34Speaker 5: just showed, like, close-ups of, like, you know, some trees
- 1:16:36Speaker 5: or some, you know, a jar on a ground. And
- 1:16:38Speaker 5: it's just, like, going all over the place. I don't know.
- 1:16:40Speaker 5: It just, it was frustrating to me. And it was, like,
- 1:16:42Speaker 5: this weird tick that I couldn't. I couldn't pin down, like,
- 1:16:45Speaker 5: why it was bothering me, but I was like, yeah,
- 1:16:46Speaker 5: the way that movie was filmed, it just.
- 1:16:48Speaker 10: Yeah, my boyfriend got really motion sick.
- 1:16:50Speaker 1: It just.
- 1:16:51Speaker 10: For me, it felt sort of insincerely folksy. Like, it just...
- 1:16:55Speaker 10: There was something inauthentic about it, and I can't even
- 1:16:58Speaker 10: put my finger on it.
- 1:17:00Speaker 5: I feel weird, dude. Like, I go back on myself
- 1:17:02Speaker 5: so much, because I even put a Facebook post on, like,
- 1:17:04Speaker 5: everyone should see Beasts of the Southern Wild, and here
- 1:17:05Speaker 5: I am, like, talking shit about it. Which is not
- 1:17:08Speaker 5: unheard of, if you've... Like, me and movies.
- 1:17:10Speaker 3: Like, going.
- 1:17:11Speaker 5: The Tree of Life.
- 1:17:11Speaker 7: Like, I... I.
- 1:17:13Speaker 5: Joined in on the, you know, the, the backlash on
- 1:17:17Speaker 5: that movie when I saw theaters and now like, I
- 1:17:18Speaker 5: love it. Um, so I, I tend to, but yeah, my,
- 1:17:22Speaker 5: I thought about it and I'm, I'm like you, I
- 1:17:24Speaker 5: feel like it was definitely manipulative with the emotions and
- 1:17:29Speaker 5: the folksiness was definitely kind of like, Oh, this is like,
- 1:17:33Speaker 5: it was going for that folksy charm and it didn't,
- 1:17:37Speaker 5: maybe that would have worked if it were trying to
- 1:17:39Speaker 5: be more grounded in like reality. but because it also
- 1:17:42Speaker 5: had to mix in this random, really random, like did like,
- 1:17:46Speaker 5: you know, the, the warthogs, like I didn't, I honestly
- 1:17:48Speaker 5: don't know what that was about. Like what, what the
- 1:17:51Speaker 5: meaning of that? Not, not even like the, I don't
- 1:17:53Speaker 5: even know what that was like a metaphor at like,
- 1:17:54Speaker 5: they were just there like, here's some giant warthogs. What
- 1:17:57Speaker 5: do you think of this? In this nuts, this movie
- 1:18:01Speaker 5: is awesome.
- 1:18:01Speaker 13: Right.
- 1:18:02Speaker 5: And I'm just like, what?
- 1:18:03Speaker 1: Okay.
- 1:18:04Speaker 5: I guess I don't, I don't know what to think.
- 1:18:06Speaker 5: I don't know. Maybe it's just like, you know, the, the, the,
- 1:18:10Speaker 5: I was just suckered by the manipulative nature of the
- 1:18:14Speaker 5: movie when I first saw it. Or maybe it was
- 1:18:16Speaker 5: because I was on a date and I wanted to
- 1:18:18Speaker 5: be in good spirit the whole time. Because she loved it.
- 1:18:21Speaker 5: Like I said, she loved it so much. And I
- 1:18:22Speaker 5: was like, yeah, it was awesome.
- 1:18:23Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 1:18:23Speaker 5: But it... I definitely had some issues with it.
- 1:18:27Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:18:28Speaker 8: Yeah.
- 1:18:28Speaker 10: Fortunately, my boyfriend and I are both cynical, sad sack bastards.
- 1:18:31Speaker 10: So we're both like, yeah.
- 1:18:33Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 1:18:34Speaker 1: Oh, that's nice.
- 1:18:36Speaker 5: I've been... You know, I've been kind of... I've been,
- 1:18:40Speaker 5: it's kind of been a year of disappointment for movies
- 1:18:43Speaker 5: with me. I mean, as far as the big blockbusters,
- 1:18:46Speaker 5: I was a little, like, I liked it very much,
- 1:18:48Speaker 5: but I was disappointed with Dark Knight Rises. Also, what
- 1:18:52Speaker 5: was another kind of big movie that came out that just...
- 1:18:55Speaker 5: I don't watch movies. Thanks. Really?
- 1:18:59Speaker 1: I don't know.
- 1:19:01Speaker 5: I don't know. Prometheus was actually the one that I thought... See,
- 1:19:05Speaker 5: I'm in the Prometheus camp, man. Don't even.
- 1:19:08Speaker 1: I will.
- 1:19:08Speaker 5: Champion that movie.
- 1:19:09Speaker 1: We should do a whole episode. Just wait.
- 1:19:10Speaker 5: No, dude, I'm telling you. Wait until the director's cut,
- 1:19:14Speaker 5: like Blu-ray comes. It will be the fully realized sci-fi masterpiece.
- 1:19:18Speaker 5: I feel like this is going to be... It's like this.
- 1:19:22Speaker 5: Generations like it'll be like Dark City I think and
- 1:19:25Speaker 5: like this cult.
- 1:19:27Speaker 6: I was pushing to do a whole episode on it
- 1:19:28Speaker 6: when it came out and we couldn't get anybody on
- 1:19:30Speaker 6: board to go see it at the same time so
- 1:19:32Speaker 6: it just.
- 1:19:32Speaker 5: Kind of got pushed off I feel like Ridley Scott
- 1:19:35Speaker 5: it'll be interesting he wanted yeah Ridley Scott he's an
- 1:19:38Speaker 5: amazing filmmaker but at the same time he's like very
- 1:19:41Speaker 5: business minded and that's kind of his weakness like he
- 1:19:44Speaker 5: knew he had this amazing you know complete vision of
- 1:19:48Speaker 5: the movie but you know studios were like we want
- 1:19:50Speaker 5: this cut we don't understand this so he had to
- 1:19:51Speaker 5: have probably cut like a good half hour of content
- 1:19:55Speaker 5: god which i mean some people might argue that it's
- 1:19:58Speaker 5: a better movie.
- 1:19:59Speaker 1: What another half hour of that never mind.
- 1:20:02Speaker 5: Oh really oh man you hate this movie that's great
- 1:20:05Speaker 5: no hates a strong word i just had issues i
- 1:20:08Speaker 5: you know i had issues with it too but here's
- 1:20:10Speaker 5: the thing like i it's one of those movies that
- 1:20:12Speaker 5: the flaws like i i i love it despite its
- 1:20:16Speaker 5: flaws um i definitely think it's the best thing he's
- 1:20:18Speaker 5: done since bloodrunner Honestly, I really do. I didn't care
- 1:20:25Speaker 5: for Gladiator. I thought it was overrated.
- 1:20:27Speaker 1: I like Gladiator, but a lot of people don't like Gladiator.
- 1:20:29Speaker 1: It's kind of silly.
- 1:20:31Speaker 5: Thelma and Louise, I never thought it was the amazing movie.
- 1:20:35Speaker 1: That people say it is. It looks really good.
- 1:20:40Speaker 5: Black Hawk Down. It's one of those movies.
- 1:20:43Speaker 1: You see and forget about.
- 1:20:44Speaker 10: I really liked that one.
- 1:20:46Speaker 1: Again, I have not revisited it. At the time, I
- 1:20:48Speaker 1: did not like that camera movement.
- 1:20:49Speaker 5: It's not like a movie.
- 1:20:50Speaker 1: And now everybody does that camera movement. It was innovative.
- 1:20:53Speaker 5: Yeah, it was borrowing the Steven Spielberg, Saving Private Ryan film.
- 1:20:57Speaker 5: Because he was the first person to really do that
- 1:21:00Speaker 5: kind of style in a war movie. And then it
- 1:21:02Speaker 5: became like, that's the norm for war movies now.
- 1:21:06Speaker 7: But.
- 1:21:06Speaker 5: You know, Legend has some odd charms to it. It
- 1:21:09Speaker 5: has a nostalgic value for me because I grew up
- 1:21:12Speaker 5: on that movie. But even so, like... It's got issues, too.
- 1:21:14Speaker 5: As far as just, like, atmosphere and, like, an original... Like,
- 1:21:18Speaker 5: a good sci-fi story with just a... I don't know,
- 1:21:23Speaker 5: a very... And a good script. I really thought the
- 1:21:25Speaker 5: script was really... People, you know, didn't like the way
- 1:21:28Speaker 5: Damien Lindelof kind of brought his lost aesthetic of, like,
- 1:21:31Speaker 5: you have to fill in the gaps on your own.
- 1:21:33Speaker 5: But I kind of liked that about it.
- 1:21:35Speaker 7: Um.
- 1:21:36Speaker 5: I thought Scott and Lindelof, like, they made a good pair. But, yeah,
- 1:21:41Speaker 5: it was definitely my, yeah, it's probably my favorite movie
- 1:21:45Speaker 5: this year. That and, I don't know, Moonrise Kingdom, maybe.
- 1:21:51Speaker 13: I don't know.
- 1:21:52Speaker 10: I think my favorite movies this year are surprises, like,
- 1:21:55Speaker 10: that I just went in with no expectations and was
- 1:21:57Speaker 10: just thoroughly charmed by. Like, Jeff Who Lives at Home,
- 1:22:00Speaker 10: that's easily.
- 1:22:01Speaker 5: My favorite movie of the year.
- 1:22:03Speaker 7: Oh, man.
- 1:22:04Speaker 5: I need to get, yeah, the whole Duplass craze I
- 1:22:07Speaker 5: haven't even seen I haven't seen you know any of
- 1:22:09Speaker 5: his movies and he's he's had like two in the
- 1:22:11Speaker 5: past year but I've heard that movie's just you know
- 1:22:16Speaker 5: nothing but great things about it yeah I think.
- 1:22:18Speaker 10: It's a perfect little movie really yeah I really do
- 1:22:20Speaker 10: I gotta.
- 1:22:21Speaker 5: Check it out god there's so many like all the
- 1:22:22Speaker 5: great stuff I've just been missing like it's been these
- 1:22:24Speaker 5: you know kind of indie movies but yeah I guess
- 1:22:28Speaker 5: it's just the big studio ones that usually which you
- 1:22:30Speaker 5: know isn't unheard of this you know the Hollywood stuff
- 1:22:33Speaker 5: does tend to disappoint that's.
- 1:22:35Speaker 6: Nothing new Alright, so we're rounding things out here and
- 1:22:38Speaker 6: I think we've made other people answer it, so we
- 1:22:41Speaker 6: should answer our own question.
- 1:22:43Speaker 1: Three movies. What have we taken in the compound with us?
- 1:22:48Speaker 10: Oh, did that really go to me first?
- 1:22:50Speaker 5: Wait, what was the question?
- 1:22:51Speaker 6: The zombie apocalypse has happened and you're loading your stuff in.
- 1:22:56Speaker 1: You don't have much room. You can only take three movies.
- 1:22:58Speaker 1: What movies are they?
- 1:22:59Speaker 3: Oh, man.
- 1:23:00Speaker 5: That's a sad question.
- 1:23:01Speaker 1: I know.
- 1:23:03Speaker 5: Well, it can only be... I can only give a
- 1:23:05Speaker 5: sad depressing answer which is i would you say three
- 1:23:09Speaker 5: movies three movies i would okay it'd be three copies
- 1:23:14Speaker 5: of birdemic just so i could drive myself to suicide
- 1:23:19Speaker 5: within a day just to speed up the process so
- 1:23:21Speaker 5: i wouldn't have to draw out the inevitable loneliness then
- 1:23:25Speaker 5: realizing that you know all my loved ones are dead
- 1:23:28Speaker 5: and everything the future is hopeless Just so I can
- 1:23:32Speaker 5: watch Birdemic, because then right then I'll be like, oh
- 1:23:34Speaker 5: my God, I forgot how bad this movie is, and
- 1:23:36Speaker 5: just blow my brains out on the spot.
- 1:23:37Speaker 1: That's a different way to take it. I didn't see
- 1:23:39Speaker 1: that one coming.
- 1:23:40Speaker 5: Just because that movie's fucking terrible. I don't know if
- 1:23:41Speaker 5: you've seen it.
- 1:23:43Speaker 1: I've seen it.
- 1:23:43Speaker 5: And I hate it because it gets this cult, like
- 1:23:46Speaker 5: people think it's this great cult. Like, no, it's not
- 1:23:48Speaker 5: even like a fun, bad, it's a bad, awful piece
- 1:23:50Speaker 5: of shit that no one should, it doesn't deserve to
- 1:23:54Speaker 5: be seen by anyone. And I love a good, bad movie.
- 1:23:56Speaker 5: This is just terrible. Birdemic. And it's getting a sequel,
- 1:23:59Speaker 5: which pisses me off even more. I'm sorry. This just
- 1:24:02Speaker 5: turned me ranting about the movie Birdemic, which was totally unnecessary.
- 1:24:05Speaker 5: But yes, that's my answer.
- 1:24:08Speaker 3: Do you want to go?
- 1:24:09Speaker 10: Okay, I think I'm ready. So one would have to
- 1:24:13Speaker 10: be my favorite movie of all time, which is Treasure
- 1:24:15Speaker 10: of the Sierra Madre, because I think it's rich enough
- 1:24:17Speaker 10: that it can withstand multiple, multiple, multiple, multiple viewings. I
- 1:24:21Speaker 10: would need a comedy, I think, to keep me in
- 1:24:23Speaker 10: good spirits. But I would also need like, A cynical
- 1:24:26Speaker 10: comedy that's about how terrible people are so that I
- 1:24:28Speaker 10: will never look back nostalgically on the world I have lost.
- 1:24:31Speaker 10: So I would go with Idiocracy on that one. And
- 1:24:34Speaker 10: then I would go with Cisco Pike just because I
- 1:24:37Speaker 10: would need a movie with both a young Chris Christopherson
- 1:24:40Speaker 10: and Harry Dean Stanton. So those are my three.
- 1:24:44Speaker 5: Okay, let me give the real answer. Not jokingly, I
- 1:24:48Speaker 5: would probably... If I had to pick three, I know
- 1:24:51Speaker 5: two definitely.
- 1:24:52Speaker 1: The first two.
- 1:24:53Speaker 5: would be one week. Michael Mann's the insider. Cause that's like,
- 1:24:56Speaker 5: I've just, I've, the more I watch it, the more
- 1:24:59Speaker 5: I realize like, this is the one movie I could
- 1:25:00Speaker 5: watch over and over and over and never get tired of.
- 1:25:02Speaker 5: Like I say that about a lot of movies, but
- 1:25:03Speaker 5: I think this is the only, that's really true about like,
- 1:25:06Speaker 5: I really could watch it.
- 1:25:07Speaker 16: Never.
- 1:25:07Speaker 5: They'd never get so excited. I think it's one of
- 1:25:09Speaker 5: the greatest movies I've seen. And, uh, I gear the
- 1:25:13Speaker 5: wrath of God. Cause that's just one of my favorite
- 1:25:15Speaker 5: movies of all time. Uh, and I guess just like, uh,
- 1:25:23Speaker 5: Probably a comedy, yeah, just throw in there just for laughs. Oh,
- 1:25:26Speaker 5: what's a good funny movie? Maybe, like, there's something about
- 1:25:31Speaker 5: Mary because that has some of the greatest belly laughs
- 1:25:33Speaker 5: from any movie I've seen. Which, it's dumb and stupid, but, like,
- 1:25:37Speaker 5: if I just want to laugh, that would be a
- 1:25:39Speaker 5: good choice, I guess.
- 1:25:39Speaker 6: Well, mine's not quite as far-fetched because I was throwing
- 1:25:42Speaker 6: one of those in. Again, much like we said earlier,
- 1:25:44Speaker 6: I think you're just going to be grabbing things, so
- 1:25:46Speaker 6: you're just going with randomness sometimes.
- 1:25:48Speaker 1: So I'll save that for the end.
- 1:25:50Speaker 6: I'll go with, if we're going to have the tribute
- 1:25:53Speaker 6: to the whole event here, I'll throw in Return of
- 1:25:55Speaker 6: the Living Dead because it's kind of awesome and, you know,
- 1:25:59Speaker 6: the best finale of any movie that I can think
- 1:26:01Speaker 6: of living here.
- 1:26:03Speaker 1: And it's a lot of fun.
- 1:26:05Speaker 6: And you've got to have a zombie movie since the
- 1:26:06Speaker 6: whole apocalypse is upon you anyway.
- 1:26:08Speaker 1: Just to, you know, be able to.
- 1:26:11Speaker 6: live in the moment have a meta thing going on
- 1:26:13Speaker 6: look out the window i'll be like zombies so then
- 1:26:16Speaker 6: you know let's go already again i just mentioned this
- 1:26:19Speaker 6: recently uh at citizen kane i'm a dork i don't
- 1:26:21Speaker 6: care it's textbook fuck it i'm great movie and uh
- 1:26:25Speaker 6: then but the when i said before like randomness you're
- 1:26:28Speaker 6: just gonna grab something i immediately went to don't tell
- 1:26:30Speaker 6: mom the babysitter's dead so that's what i'm.
- 1:26:33Speaker 1: Taking okay.
- 1:26:36Speaker 5: Well, if I had to, okay, I know this is, if,
- 1:26:39Speaker 5: so I don't feel.
- 1:26:40Speaker 1: You're dead already.
- 1:26:41Speaker 5: I'm dead already.
- 1:26:41Speaker 1: The zombies ate you because you're thinking too much.
- 1:26:44Speaker 5: I know. I snuck in, I snuck in three more movies.
- 1:26:47Speaker 5: This is what you don't, it's a big plot twist.
- 1:26:49Speaker 5: The M. Night Shyamalan.
- 1:26:50Speaker 1: You're like the guy.
- 1:26:51Speaker 5: Oh, he brought three more movies?
- 1:26:52Speaker 1: You're like the guy who gets bitten and tries to
- 1:26:54Speaker 1: hide it.
- 1:26:55Speaker 5: No, no, I don't trust this. Because you mentioned Citizen Kane,
- 1:26:57Speaker 5: I was, because you mentioned Citizen Kane, Vertigo popped in
- 1:26:59Speaker 5: there and I'm like, okay, Vertical's, Vertical. Vertigo is one
- 1:27:02Speaker 5: of my all-time favorite movies.
- 1:27:03Speaker 1: Vertical Limit?
- 1:27:03Speaker 5: Vertical Limit. It's also a masterpiece.
- 1:27:05Speaker 1: You're taking that one.
- 1:27:07Speaker 5: No way.
- 1:27:07Speaker 1: No, you're taking it now. That's your pen.
- 1:27:10Speaker 5: I'll throw in Vertigo just to like, as the third
- 1:27:12Speaker 5: serious movie, you know, if I don't have to do
- 1:27:14Speaker 5: a light comedy, that would be, I would switch out
- 1:27:16Speaker 5: that with the comedy. But yeah, Vertigo.
- 1:27:19Speaker 3: All right, fine. Beat up.
- 1:27:22Speaker 5: Now I'm done.
- 1:27:24Speaker 10: All right.
- 1:27:25Speaker 1: So we answered our own question. I thought it would
- 1:27:26Speaker 1: be mean to not do it.
- 1:27:28Speaker 6: So, you know, and it's just kind of random because
- 1:27:30Speaker 6: if I thought too much, my head would explode. I
- 1:27:32Speaker 6: tried to make us do top ten lists years ago,
- 1:27:34Speaker 6: and I couldn't do it.
- 1:27:36Speaker 1: So, yeah, I'm randomly picking things.
- 1:27:38Speaker 6: It's my only, and again, much like the event, you know,
- 1:27:41Speaker 6: you just got to grab stuff.
- 1:27:42Speaker 1: So that's the only way to do it, really.
- 1:27:45Speaker 5: All right.
- 1:27:45Speaker 1: It has been an interesting evening. Any final wrap-ups on
- 1:27:50Speaker 1: the goings-on here?
- 1:27:54Speaker 10: Oh, that went to me again, didn't it?
- 1:27:55Speaker 7: Anybody.
- 1:27:56Speaker 10: No, honestly, there was something strangely comforting about it. I
- 1:28:00Speaker 10: don't like crowds. I don't like people bumping into each
- 1:28:03Speaker 10: other and getting in the way and being slow and
- 1:28:05Speaker 10: not knowing where they're going. But when they're all dressed
- 1:28:07Speaker 10: as zombies, you're like, no, it's okay because they're zombies
- 1:28:09Speaker 10: and that's what they do.
- 1:28:10Speaker 5: That's true. So, yeah.
- 1:28:13Speaker 6: It's an impressive event that every year I'm still amazed. Like,
- 1:28:18Speaker 6: I keep thinking, you know, those first couple of years, okay,
- 1:28:20Speaker 6: it was cool and it found its following.
- 1:28:22Speaker 1: I keep thinking.
- 1:28:22Speaker 6: Eventually people will be like, Ah, whatever. And they'll move
- 1:28:26Speaker 6: on to something else. But I don't know if it's
- 1:28:28Speaker 6: just this town or if it's just, I mean, again,
- 1:28:31Speaker 6: they've put a hell of a lot of work into
- 1:28:32Speaker 6: putting this together every year. So, I mean, they do
- 1:28:35Speaker 6: a good job of running it, but I don't know.
- 1:28:38Speaker 6: It's amazing that it still finds its way. this amount
- 1:28:41Speaker 6: of people every year.
- 1:28:43Speaker 1: We're eight years in now, and it's still a ton
- 1:28:46Speaker 1: of people.
- 1:28:46Speaker 6: So, it's amazing that that many people, and I guess
- 1:28:50Speaker 6: just speaks to the society in general at this point
- 1:28:54Speaker 6: and their weird zombie obsession.
- 1:28:56Speaker 1: It's become pretty damn mainstream now.
- 1:28:58Speaker 6: So, I guess it's bringing in probably way more normal
- 1:29:01Speaker 6: people than it did that, you know, second year that
- 1:29:03Speaker 6: I was standing there when it was just a bunch
- 1:29:05Speaker 6: of dorky kids in a parking lot.
- 1:29:08Speaker 1: That was fun too. So, you know, I'll take both.
- 1:29:11Speaker 1: It's good across the board.
