- 0:00Welcome to Kick Ass Daily, where we bring news, trivia, fun
- 0:04facts, and more just for curious kids like you.
- 0:07Today, we're going on a magical trip to one of the most famous
- 0:11landmarks in the world. Imagine standing in the heart of
- 0:14a bustling city, looking up at a giant structure that almost
- 0:18touches the clouds. Can you guess where we are?
- 0:21That's right, we're in Paris, France, staring at the
- 0:25incredible Eiffel Tower. Let's start our adventure with a
- 0:28question. Have you ever built something
- 0:30tall with your building blocks? Maybe you stuck them as high as
- 0:34you could, carefully balancing each one.
- 0:37The Eiffel Tower is a lot like that, but instead of blocks,
- 0:40it's made of metal beams. And instead of being in your
- 0:42living room, it's right in the middle of a giant city.
- 0:46So what exactly is the Eiffel Tower?
- 0:49Well, it's a gigantic iron tower that stands probably on the
- 0:53banks of the River Seine in Paris.
- 0:56It's not just tall, it's super tall.
- 0:58The Eiffel Tower is about 330 meters high.
- 1:02That's like stacking more than 80 giraffes on top of each
- 1:05other. Or if you think about a regular
- 1:07school bus, you'd need over 100 buses stacked end to end to
- 1:11reach the top. Now that's a tall tower, but why
- 1:15was it built in the 1st place? The story goes back over 130
- 1:19years to the year 1889. Paris was getting ready to host
- 1:23a huge celebration called the World's Fair or Exposition
- 1:27Universal. This was a big party where
- 1:30people from all over the world came to show off new inventions,
- 1:33art and ideas. The French government wanted
- 1:36something really special to show the world just how amazing
- 1:39French engineering could be. They wanted a centerpiece that
- 1:42would make everyone say wow. Enter Gustav Eiffel, a clever
- 1:47engineer with a passion for building.
- 1:49Gustav and his team came up with the idea for a tower so tall and
- 1:53unique that it would become the talk of the town.
- 1:56At first, some people thought the design was too strange or
- 1:59impossible to build. They said it looked like a giant
- 2:03metal skeleton. But Gustav Eiffel believed in
- 2:06his dream, and he and his workers got to work.
- 2:09Imagine hundreds of workers wearing hats and overalls,
- 2:13carrying heavy pieces of iron and carefully fitting them
- 2:16together like a giant puzzle. They used more than 18,000 metal
- 2:20parts, almost as many pieces as a huge Lego set.
- 2:25The workers used more than 2.5 million rivets, which are like
- 2:29giant metal buttons that hold everything together.
- 2:32Building the Eiffel Tower was a huge challenge, but they
- 2:35finished it in just over 2 years.
- 2:37That's pretty quick for something so big.
- 2:40When the tower was finally finished, people couldn't
- 2:43believe their eyes. It was the tallest structure in
- 2:46the world at that time. Everyone wanted to visit and see
- 2:49what it felt like to stand so high above the city.
- 2:52The Eiffel Tower quickly became a symbol of Paris and of France
- 2:56itself. Now, let's take a closer look at
- 2:59the tower itself. The Eiffel Tower has three main
- 3:02levels, or floors. You can get to each level by
- 3:05riding in a special glass elevator or, if you're feeling
- 3:08extra energetic, by climbing the stairs.
- 3:11There are 1665 steps to the very top.
- 3:15Imagine climbing all those. That's a lot of exercise.
- 3:20On each level there are places to eat, shops to buy souvenirs,
- 3:24and amazing views of the city. On a clear day, you can see for
- 3:28miles and miles the people below look like tiny ants and the cars
- 3:33look like toy cars from way up high.
- 3:35Did you know that the Eiffel Tower is painted every seven
- 3:38years? It takes about 60 tons of paint
- 3:41to cover the whole tower that's heavier than 10 elephants.
- 3:45The paint protects the metal from rust and keeps it looking
- 3:48shiny and new. The color of the tower is called
- 3:51Eiffel Tower Brown, and it's a special shade that changes
- 3:55slightly depending on the sunlight.
- 3:57Some people say the tower looks golden at sunrise, bronze at
- 4:01noon, and almost purple at sunset.
- 4:03It's like a chameleon always changing its colors.
- 4:07Here's another fun fact. The Eiffel Tower can grow and
- 4:11shrink. No, it doesn't have magic
- 4:14powers, but it does react to the weather.
- 4:17When the sun is shining and the weather is hot, the metal
- 4:20expands and the tower can grow up to 15 centimeters taller.
- 4:24That's about the length of a big ruler.
- 4:27When it's cold, the metal contracts and the tower shrinks
- 4:30back down. So the Eiffel Tower is always
- 4:33moving just a little bit, even though it looks solid as a rock.
- 4:37At night, the Eiffel Tower puts on a sparkling show.
- 4:41Every evening when the sun goes down, thousands of twinkling
- 4:45lights cover the tower and make it shine like a diamond.
- 4:48People come from all over the world to watch it glitter and
- 4:52glow. It's like the Eiffel Tower is
- 4:54wearing its own special party dress.
- 4:57Let's talk about the visitors. More than 7 million people visit
- 5:00the Eiffel Tower every year. That's more than the number of
- 5:04people who live in some whole countries.
- 5:06People take pictures, eat delicious French food and learn
- 5:10all about the history of the tower.
- 5:12Some even get to meet Gustav Eiffel himself, or at least a
- 5:16statue of him that stands on one of the levels.
- 5:19And did you know that the Eiffel Tower wasn't supposed to stay
- 5:23forever? When it was first built, the
- 5:25plan was to keep it for only 20 years.
- 5:28After that, it was going to be taken down.
- 5:30But the people of Paris loved it so much, and it turned out to be
- 5:34so useful as a radio tower that they decided to keep it.
- 5:38Now it's over 130 years old and more popular than ever.
- 5:43Let's imagine for a moment that you're standing at the very top
- 5:46of the Eiffel Tower. The wind is blowing gently and
- 5:50the city of Paris stretches out in every direction.
- 5:53You can see the winding river saying, the beautiful gardens
- 5:56below, and the busy streets filled with people.
- 6:00Maybe spot someone having a picnic or a group of friends
- 6:03riding bikes along the river. From up here, everything looks
- 6:07peaceful and magical. The Eiffel Tower isn't just a
- 6:10pretty sight, it's also a place of science and adventure.
- 6:14Over the years, inventors and scientists have used the tower
- 6:18for all sorts of experiments. In the early days of radio,
- 6:22antennas were put on the top to send signals all around the
- 6:25world. Weather experts studied the wind
- 6:28and the clouds from the top of the tower.
- 6:30Even today, the Eiffel Tower is used to measure air quality and
- 6:34test new technology. Here's a silly did you know
- 6:37question. Did you know that someone once
- 6:39tried to sell the Eiffel Tower? That's right, in 1925, a sneaky
- 6:44trickster pretended to be a government official and
- 6:46convinced some people that the tower was going to be sold for
- 6:49scrap metal. He almost got away with it, but
- 6:52luckily the Eiffel Tower stayed right where it belongs in Paris.
- 6:56And here's another fun one. There are actually tiny
- 7:00apartments hidden inside the Eiffel Tower.
- 7:02Gustav Eiffel built a secret little room near the top for
- 7:05himself where he could work or relax with friends.
- 7:09Today, visitors can eek inside and see what it looked like,
- 7:12complete with old furniture and scientific gadgets.
- 7:16If you visit the Eiffel Tower, you might also meet some of its
- 7:19animal friends. Birds love to perch on the beams
- 7:22and fly around the tower. Sometimes you'll see seagulls,
- 7:26pigeons, or even Hawks soaring above the city.
- 7:29At night, bats might swoop around, catching tiny insects in
- 7:33the air. The Eiffel Tower is like a giant
- 7:36playground for creatures big and small.
- 7:39Now let's play a quick game. I'm going to say a fact, and you
- 7:42guess if it's true or not. Ready, First fact.
- 7:46The Eiffel Tower was once the tallest building in the world.
- 7:50That's true. When it was finished in 1889, no
- 7:53other structure was taller. Second fact, the Eiffel Tower is
- 7:57made out of chocolate. Nope, that's not true.
- 8:00But you can find delicious chocolate models of the tower in
- 8:04Paris bakeries. 3rd fact, the Eiffel Tower can dance.
- 8:08Well not really, but it does sparkle and shine at night,
- 8:12which is almost like dancing. Great job guessing.
- 8:15Now before we finish, let's quickly recap what we learned
- 8:19today. The Eiffel Tower is a giant iron
- 8:22tower in Paris, France built over 130 years ago for a big
- 8:26world celebration called the Exposition Universal.
- 8:29It was designed by Gustav Eiffel and his team using over 18,000
- 8:34metal parts and two point point 5 million rivets.
- 8:37The tower stands about 330 meters tall, which is higher
- 8:41than 80 giraffes stacked up. It has three main levels and you
- 8:45can climb up more than 1600 steps to the top or take a
- 8:49special elevator. The Eiffel Tower is painted
- 8:52every seven years and can even grow or shrink a little bit
- 8:56depending on the weather. At night, it sparkles with
- 9:00thousands of lights, and millions of people visit it
- 9:03every year. It's been used for science,
- 9:06radio and fun, and it even has a secret apartment near the top.
- 9:10Most of all, the Eiffel Tower is a symbol of imagination,
- 9:14creativity, and the power of believing in your dreams.
- 9:18Next time you build a tall tower with your blocks or draw a
- 9:21picture of a city, remember the amazing story of the Eiffel
- 9:24Tower and the people who made it possible.
- 9:27Thanks for joining us on Kit Cast Daily.
- 9:29Keep exploring, keep asking questions, and never stop being
- 9:33curious. Until next time, Aurevoir.
- 9:36That's how you say.
