- 0:00Vox Liturgica: The propers of the day according to the Roman Missal before 1955. The Holy Guardian Angels. October 2 in the year of our Lord 2026. Of the Holy Guardian Angels, Dom Gaspar Lefevre writes the following. This feast, solemnized by the Spaniards in the sixteenth century, was extended to the whole church by Paul the fifth in 1608.
- 0:40Clement the tenth in the year of our Lord 1670 appointed it to be kept on the first free day after the feast of Saint Michael, namely October 2. The Angels already in glory have for their mission to adore the divinity as mentioned in the introit, operatory, and communion verse. Wherefore in the preface the church makes us ask God to permit our voices to join with theirs to praise God. But as their name indicates the angels are also messengers of divine commands as mentioned in the offertory. The Holy Fathers teach that they preside over all created things and Saint Paul declares that their mission is to serve the future heirs of salvation.
- 1:40That is why they are called Guardian Angels. It is generally thought that kingdoms, provinces, families, diocese, churches, religious communities each have their protecting angel. That there is one for each just man, there can be no doubt. And the church applies to the souls that are under the new law what is written about the people under the old law. I shall send my angel to march before you, to guard you on the way, and to bring you into the land which I have prepared for you, says the epistle.
- 2:25Our guardian angel has for his mission to protect us and defend us in order that under his protection safe from the snares of the enemies of our souls and from all adversities we may reach the promised land of eternal life which we pray for in the collects. In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost. Amen. The introit. Bless the Lord, all ye his angels, you that are mighty in strength, and execute his word, hearkening to the voice of his orders.
- 3:17Bless the Lord, O my soul, and let all that is within me bless his holy name. Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Ghost as it was in the beginning is now and will be through all ages of ages. Amen. Bless the Lord all ye his angels, you that are mighty in strength, and execute his word hearkening to the voice of his orders. The Collect, let us pray.
- 3:59O God, who in thine ineffable providence hast deigned to send Thy holy angels to keep watch over us. Grant to us Thy suppliant people that we may always be defended by their protection and may rejoice in their fellowship forevermore. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, thy Son, who liveth and reigneth with thee in the unity of the Holy Ghost, God through all ages of ages. Amen. A lesson from the book of Exodus.
- 4:40Thus says the Lord God, Now I am sending my angel to go before thee and guard thee on thy way and lead thee to the place I have made ready for thee. Give him good heed and listen to his bidding. Think not to treat him with neglect. He will not overlook thy faults, and in him dwells the power of my name. If thou wilt listen to his warnings, and do all I bid thee, then thy enemies shall find an enemy in me.
- 5:20And those who show thee no mercy shall find me merciless so this angel of mine will go on before thee. The gradual. He has given charge to his angels concerning thee to watch over thee wheresoever thou goest. They will hold thee up with their hands, lest thou should chance to trip on a stone. Alleluia.
- 5:57Alleluia. Bless the Lord, all you hosts of his, the servants that perform his will. Alleluia. A continuation of the Holy Gospel according to Matthew. The disciples came to Jesus at that time and said, tell us who is greatest in the kingdom of heaven?
- 6:28Whereupon Jesus called to his side a little child to whom he gave a place in the midst of them and said, believe me, unless you become like little children again, you shall not enter the kingdom of heaven. He is greatest in the kingdom of heaven who will abase himself like this little child. He who gives welcome to such a child as this in my name gives welcome to me. And if anyone hurts the conscience of one of these little ones that believe in me, he had better have been drowned in the depths of the sea with a millstone hung about his neck. Woe to the world for the hurt done to consciences.
- 7:24It must needs be that such hurt should come, but woe to the man through whom it comes. If thy hand or thy foot is an occasion of failing to thee, cut it off and cast it away from thee. Better for thee to enter into life crippled or lame than to have two hands or two feet when thou art cast into eternal fire and if thy eye is an occasion of falling to thee pluck it out and cast it away from thee. Better for thee to enter into life with one eye than to have two eyes when thou art cast into the fires of hell. See to it that you do not treat one of these little ones with contempt.
- 8:27I tell you they have angels of their own in heaven that behold the face of my heavenly father continually. The offertory. Bless the Lord, all you angels of his, his servants that carry out his commandments attentive to the word he utters. The secret. Receive, O Lord, the gifts which we bring thee in honor of thy holy angels and mercifully grant that by their unceasing watchfulness we may be delivered from present dangers, and may attain unto life everlasting through our Lord Jesus Christ, thy Son, who liveth and reigneth with thee in the unity of the Holy Ghost, God through all ages of ages.
- 9:32Amen. The common preface, just it is indeed and fitting, right and for our salvation, that we should at all times and in all places give thanks unto thee, o holy Lord, father almighty, everlasting God, through whom the angels praise thy majesty, the dominions worship it, The power stand in awe. The heavens and the hosts of heaven, together with the blessed Seraphim, joyfully do magnify. We entreat thee that thou command it be permitted us to join with them in confessing thee while we say with lowly praise. Holy, holy, holy, Lord God of hosts, The heavens and the earth are full of thy glory.
- 10:32Hosanna in the highest. Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest. The communion. O ye angels of the Lord, bless the Lord.
- 10:52Praise and exalt him above all forever. The post communion. Let us pray. We have received, O Lord, thy divine mysteries in joyful celebration of the solemnity of thy holy angels. We beseech thee that by their protection we may always be delivered from the snares of our enemies and guarded against all adversity through our Lord Jesus Christ thy son who liveth and reigneth with thee in the unity of the Holy Ghost, God through all ages of ages.
- 11:37Amen. In the name of the father, and of the son, and of the Holy Ghost. Amen. Angel of God, my guardian dear, to whom God's love commits me here, ever this day be at my side to light and guard, to rule and guide. Amen.
