- 0:00Speaker 1: All right, welcome back to ACC Football Addiction. Virginia Tech
- 0:03Speaker 1: game two coming up in just about 24 hours against
- 0:07Speaker 1: Old Dominion. TJ Pittenger, Joe Rogers from 1999 AM The Berg.
- 0:13Speaker 1: We are presented by PrizePix. We're all new users who
- 0:15Speaker 1: play a $ 5 lineup, get $ 150 in lineups if they
- 0:19Speaker 1: win using code HMA.
- 0:21Speaker 2: Joe, week two coming. How you doing, bud?
- 0:24Speaker 3: Doing well, doing well. Got a quinceañera tomorrow. Thankfully, the
- 0:27Speaker 3: Hokies play early. So that works out in my favor.
- 0:30Speaker 3: I appreciate them scheduling that for me. Uh, week two,
- 0:33Speaker 3: we're still alive. I'm happy.
- 0:39Speaker 1: Um, week one was not super competitive, uh, a 70
- 0:45Speaker 1: point win, which has everybody feeling good. When a new
- 0:47Speaker 1: coach takes over a new guy starting you're, super thrilled
- 0:51Speaker 1: about that.
- 0:52Speaker 2: Were there things in the game that you liked?
- 0:55Speaker 1: Maybe one really positive takeaway to go like super 10,000 feet.
- 0:59Speaker 1: And then one thing that you do want to see
- 1:00Speaker 1: them work on going up against maybe a more difficult opponent,
- 1:03Speaker 1: not a crazy difficult opponent, but a little bit better
- 1:05Speaker 1: opponent this weekend.
- 1:08Speaker 3: Yeah, there's a complete vibe around the entire program. It's
- 1:12Speaker 3: a lot more serious this year. Everyone's more focused. You
- 1:16Speaker 3: could see it on James Franklin's face. He had that
- 1:18Speaker 3: thousand yard stare after Sandman. And the team didn't look sloppy.
- 1:22Speaker 3: I mean, you can beat bad teams by a lot
- 1:24Speaker 3: and still look kind of sloppy. South Carolina did that, actually.
- 1:28Speaker 3: They looked a little bit sloppy. So everything looked tight.
- 1:32Speaker 3: They looked organized for once. The Brent Pryor era was
- 1:35Speaker 3: total chaos. There was no organization in that building. So
- 1:39Speaker 3: that is a huge, huge positive for us. A green flag,
- 1:43Speaker 3: so to speak. The only bad thing from the game
- 1:47Speaker 3: is we had a lot of penalties. what 11 penalties,
- 1:51Speaker 3: almost a hundred yards. So they've got to clean up
- 1:53Speaker 3: some of these false starts. And I'm sure that's first
- 1:56Speaker 3: game jitters, you know, getting the snap cadences, you know,
- 2:00Speaker 3: getting everybody on the same page.
- 2:03Speaker 2: Yeah. I, I wonder too, like you, you import a
- 2:07Speaker 2: lot of guys.
- 2:10Speaker 1: With a new coach taking over, obviously in this new game,
- 2:13Speaker 1: in this new era that we're in, and you've got
- 2:14Speaker 1: a lot of holdover, like just that communication. I also
- 2:17Speaker 1: imagine like a coach like James Franken is not going
- 2:19Speaker 1: to take that for long. That's like a, all right, man,
- 2:22Speaker 1: you get like one, maybe two weeks, but like we
- 2:24Speaker 1: ain't doing.
- 2:25Speaker 2: This all year. Yeah.
- 2:27Speaker 3: They were out there running on Sunday. I mean, he's,
- 2:32Speaker 3: he's not putting up with nothing. It is a tight ship.
- 2:35Speaker 3: Dad's home. So to speak.
- 2:38Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 2:40Speaker 1: What I'm looking at this game. against Old Dominion. Virginia Tech,
- 2:45Speaker 1: a big favorite, like nearly three touchdowns. It's anywhere from
- 2:47Speaker 1: 18 to 20 points based on where you can get
- 2:50Speaker 1: the line at. So a game that Virginia Tech is
- 2:52Speaker 1: expected to win, but win closer. Like, I don't know
- 2:56Speaker 1: that this is a team that's going to make you
- 2:57Speaker 1: sweat super late into the game, like still should win
- 3:00Speaker 1: pretty comfortably, but may not be the laugher that last
- 3:03Speaker 1: week was against VMI.
- 3:05Speaker 2: What are your thoughts on QB play heading into this one?
- 3:08Speaker 1: Like, what were your thoughts on ground, like, In week one, obviously, again,
- 3:12Speaker 1: opponent considered. You know, everybody looks like a Heisman Trophy
- 3:14Speaker 1: kind of candidate when you win by 70.
- 3:17Speaker 2: But just thoughts on, like, what he did in his
- 3:19Speaker 2: first game in a Hokies uniform.
- 3:23Speaker 3: Yeah, I thought he looked really good. He made quick reads.
- 3:26Speaker 3: He made the correct read. Only real downside was he
- 3:29Speaker 3: missed on two deep balls. He only had three incompletions.
- 3:32Speaker 3: Those were two of them. So he missed a couple
- 3:34Speaker 3: deep balls. I'd like to see that get cleaned up
- 3:36Speaker 3: this week. Old Dominion doesn't really look like a threat.
- 3:40Speaker 3: they really struggled with the fighting Michael Vick Norfolk State
- 3:45Speaker 3: team out there. It was 17-10 deep in the third quarter.
- 3:48Speaker 3: Their left side of their line looks like just a
- 3:52Speaker 3: revolving door, really. So I'm not really that worried about them.
- 3:57Speaker 3: Some people have mentioned that Franklin might not run up
- 3:59Speaker 3: the score on Ricky Ronnie just because they have that connection,
- 4:05Speaker 3: used to work together. I don't think that's the case
- 4:08Speaker 3: at all. I think James Franklin is going to score
- 4:11Speaker 3: until you make him stop. If you don't like it,
- 4:14Speaker 3: stop it. I do not think that's the case at all.
- 4:18Speaker 3: I see probably a 20-point gap this week.
- 4:24Speaker 1: Yeah. The trench play, I mean, you mentioned their offensive
- 4:27Speaker 1: line struggling, and that's where I, you know, as much
- 4:30Speaker 1: talent as there is really all over this roster, from
- 4:33Speaker 1: quarterback to tight end to some of the other skill
- 4:35Speaker 1: positions to defense that retain some pieces, like just the
- 4:39Speaker 1: gap in the trenches feels like just too far of
- 4:42Speaker 1: a bridge to cross for me to even think that
- 4:45Speaker 1: this is more competitive than maybe the spread is. Or,
- 4:48Speaker 1: you know, you went by 17 and you don't cover
- 4:50Speaker 1: the spread by a point and a half. Like, I
- 4:51Speaker 1: don't think anybody's jumping off a bridge, but I do
- 4:53Speaker 1: think that like just that gap in what he's been
- 4:56Speaker 1: able to build in the trenches in year one. And yeah,
- 4:59Speaker 1: that's been his mantra forever. Like good lines, good tight
- 5:02Speaker 1: end play, like good solid defense, good fundamental football, which
- 5:05Speaker 1: are all things that like have followed him for his career.
- 5:08Speaker 1: That gap in talent this weekend likely going to, you know,
- 5:13Speaker 1: not that everything else wouldn't be the difference in the game,
- 5:15Speaker 1: but that's kind of where it starts and ends for me.
- 5:18Speaker 1: I'll get right back to chatting with Joe, but first
- 5:19Speaker 1: I want to remind you guys about Alumni Hall. Make
- 5:21Speaker 1: sure you are shopping in Alumni Hall, whether it's online
- 5:24Speaker 1: or in person. You can use our code CFA15. It'll
- 5:27Speaker 1: save you 15% on your order. That's CFA15, College Football
- 5:31Speaker 1: Addiction 15. Doesn't sign you up for anything. It's not
- 5:34Speaker 1: a subscription, not a monthly cost. Just save money on
- 5:37Speaker 1: the gear you are going to buy anyway for your team. AlumniHall.com,
- 5:41Speaker 1: Alumni Hall in person, CFA15. Use our code and enjoy.
- 5:46Speaker 3: Yeah, and you kind of start to see it fall
- 5:47Speaker 3: apart later in the game with depth. They don't have
- 5:50Speaker 3: a lot of depth. They've got a lot of JUCO
- 5:52Speaker 3: players on their roster out there at ODU this year.
- 5:54Speaker 3: I mean, they even have a guy from Averitt. You know,
- 5:57Speaker 3: it's like a division NA, IA school out there in Danville, Virginia.
- 6:02Speaker 3: So not a lot of size, no depth, and I
- 6:05Speaker 3: think at some point that sits in, and then we
- 6:07Speaker 3: start to pull away. Yeah.
- 6:09Speaker 1: Yeah. What what are the position groups that, you know,
- 6:15Speaker 1: maybe don't worry you in this matchup and didn't worry
- 6:18Speaker 1: you last week against VMI? But what are the position
- 6:21Speaker 1: groups where you kind of have your eye on to say, like, hey,
- 6:23Speaker 1: once we get into ACC play, once we start to
- 6:25Speaker 1: play some of the better teams on this schedule, this
- 6:27Speaker 1: is where I need to see us kind of take
- 6:28Speaker 1: a leap, you know, zooming out from this game, because,
- 6:31Speaker 1: you know, again, I don't know how much you're gleaning
- 6:32Speaker 1: from a massive, you know, spread or, you know, to
- 6:37Speaker 1: be downs in a row, but like, where are the
- 6:38Speaker 1: position groups that you're saying, all right, if we really
- 6:40Speaker 1: want to compete for something this year in the conference
- 6:42Speaker 1: or beyond, this is where we probably.
- 6:44Speaker 2: Need to get a little tighter.
- 6:46Speaker 3: Absolutely. Safety position. Tyson flowers is he's not really a
- 6:51Speaker 3: P four level starter. Good news is we have DQ Smith. Oh,
- 6:55Speaker 3: we might see him a little bit this week. He
- 6:57Speaker 3: was pretty good at South Carolina last year. So he's
- 7:00Speaker 3: just kind of getting back into the flow of things.
- 7:03Speaker 3: We might see a little bit of him, but safety
- 7:05Speaker 3: is definitely the position that we're kind of watching.
- 7:11Speaker 2: The overall vibes, you know, not that this is a
- 7:16Speaker 2: vibe show.
- 7:17Speaker 1: We do try and talk about ball, but anytime there's
- 7:19Speaker 1: a new takeover or a new coach, like you do
- 7:21Speaker 1: want to know, like the, the read, how, how would
- 7:25Speaker 1: you compare like the, the way that Virginia tech fans
- 7:28Speaker 1: are bought in right now compared to.
- 7:32Speaker 2: Any other new coaching staff?
- 7:33Speaker 1: Because a new coaching staff comes in, there's invariably going
- 7:35Speaker 1: to be some hype. There's going to be some excitement
- 7:37Speaker 1: of things that are new, things that are like, hey,
- 7:40Speaker 1: we've turned a corner. Like everybody believes that every new
- 7:44Speaker 1: hire that's happened anywhere in the country, like you feel
- 7:46Speaker 1: really good about. But how would you compare it this
- 7:49Speaker 1: time to other regimes that have come in?
- 7:53Speaker 3: This is actually a lot more serious. You know, Franklin's
- 7:57Speaker 3: a proven winner. The last two staffs, you know, we
- 8:00Speaker 3: didn't really know how Brent Pryor was going to be
- 8:02Speaker 3: as a head coach. We weren't really sure if Justin
- 8:05Speaker 3: Fuente could make the step up to P4 ball. But
- 8:08Speaker 3: with James Franklin, we know what it looks like when
- 8:12Speaker 3: he gets program running. So, we're kind of ahead of
- 8:15Speaker 3: the curve, so to speak. The fans are already excited.
- 8:17Speaker 3: I mean, we packed the stadium for a bad VMI team.
- 8:21Speaker 3: Got another sellout this week for a noon game against ODU.
- 8:25Speaker 3: The energy's already there.
- 8:27Speaker 4: So.
- 8:27Speaker 3: It's definitely off to a good start.
- 8:30Speaker 1: When I look at the next few weeks, Maryland next week,
- 8:34Speaker 1: a game that I think Virginia Tech can absolutely go
- 8:35Speaker 1: on the road and win Boston College. We have to
- 8:37Speaker 1: add another one that I think Virginia Tech can go
- 8:39Speaker 1: out and win. I think that Pittsburgh game is kind
- 8:41Speaker 1: of like the litmus test for this team. I think
- 8:44Speaker 1: their quarterback, I mean, he came to Tallahassee in his
- 8:47Speaker 1: first start and just absolutely demolished our defense. I think
- 8:50Speaker 1: they've got one of the better and more underrated quarterbacks
- 8:53Speaker 1: in the ACC.
- 8:54Speaker 2: And, you know, guy goes out and throws seven touchdowns.
- 8:56Speaker 2: I don't care who it's against. Like, yeah, he can ball.
- 8:58Speaker 1: Right. And he balled last year and really turned their
- 9:00Speaker 1: season around, too, after they had lost to West Virginia
- 9:03Speaker 1: and started out pretty poorly. I wish they'd have played
- 9:06Speaker 1: him one game after coming to Tallahassee. It might've been
- 9:08Speaker 1: a little better for me, but yeah, I, I think that,
- 9:12Speaker 1: you know, you got to get through the next three weeks.
- 9:14Speaker 1: You got to get through old dominion, get through Maryland,
- 9:16Speaker 1: get through BC winning on the road, never super easy.
- 9:19Speaker 1: And that's a big 10 team and a conference opponent
- 9:21Speaker 1: that you play the next two weeks after this one.
- 9:23Speaker 1: But man, that Pittsburgh game, obviously a big deal being
- 9:26Speaker 1: at night in Blacksburg. You'd certainly rather play there than
- 9:30Speaker 1: have to go on the road in the ACC and
- 9:31Speaker 1: play at night.
- 9:32Speaker 4: But yeah, To me, that game is, you know, not
- 9:35Speaker 4: that you lose that and all hope is lost, but
- 9:37Speaker 4: that's the game that's kind of defined, all right, is
- 9:39Speaker 4: Virginia Tech a good team, or are they one of
- 9:41Speaker 4: the better teams in the conference?
- 9:45Speaker 3: Yeah, I think that game kind of tells us if
- 9:47Speaker 3: we're a contender or not. Are we a contender for
- 9:49Speaker 3: the ACC? Kind of all hangs on how we look
- 9:52Speaker 3: against Pitt there. You know, we don't play a lot
- 9:55Speaker 3: of the top end teams in the ACC this year
- 9:57Speaker 3: you know Georgia Tech didn't look great Stanford does not
- 10:01Speaker 3: look good you know yeah that is really going to
- 10:05Speaker 3: be the the game that kind of determines how the
- 10:07Speaker 3: seasons goes are we a 10 win team are we
- 10:10Speaker 3: eight win team.
- 10:12Speaker 1: Yeah and that's where you know yeah there's I mean,
- 10:15Speaker 1: you mentioned some of the team, I mean, Clemson, again,
- 10:17Speaker 1: we'll see kind of what they look like SMU, very
- 10:19Speaker 1: turnover prone in their first game.
- 10:21Speaker 2: That's a tough one on the road.
- 10:23Speaker 1: UVA look good in, in week zero, but I want
- 10:25Speaker 1: to see it from them consistently in the ACC, not just,
- 10:28Speaker 1: you know, against NC state with, with Doran and those guys.
- 10:31Speaker 2: But yeah, I'm, I'm with you, man. Like, I think
- 10:33Speaker 2: you take.
- 10:33Speaker 1: Care of business early and get that one against pit.
- 10:36Speaker 1: You guys actually played two really good quarterbacks back to
- 10:38Speaker 1: back with Heinzel and then JKS the next week out
- 10:41Speaker 1: in California and, And so like, it's, it's.
- 10:43Speaker 2: Tricky, but I do think the schedule is manageable.
- 10:45Speaker 1: You don't play Louisville, you know, obviously the road trip
- 10:49Speaker 1: to Miami is going to be tough for anybody, but
- 10:51Speaker 1: we also understand that Miami is kind of like in a,
- 10:53Speaker 1: maybe a tier of their own right now in the conference.
- 10:55Speaker 1: And so I think it is like, can, can Virginia
- 10:58Speaker 1: tech fight for that second spot to maybe force a
- 11:00Speaker 1: rematch or to maybe get to Charlotte and, and, you know,
- 11:02Speaker 1: then who knows what happens, but Yeah, that Pitt one,
- 11:05Speaker 1: the Cal one, really interesting to be a back-to-back with
- 11:07Speaker 1: two really good quarterbacks. And, you know, what does Virginia
- 11:12Speaker 1: Tech's defense, like, have humming by that point, right? What
- 11:14Speaker 1: are they able to do to limit those guys to
- 11:16Speaker 1: keep themselves in games, to go out and perform themselves offensively?
- 11:21Speaker 2: That's, like, the most interesting storyline of the year to me.
- 11:23Speaker 1: Because, yeah, I think once you get to the Georgia
- 11:24Speaker 1: Techs and Clemsons, even though those are big names in
- 11:27Speaker 1: the conference, like, I don't think they're very good. And
- 11:29Speaker 1: so you've got a great opportunity to, one at home,
- 11:31Speaker 1: one on the road, to pick up more wins that
- 11:34Speaker 1: you maybe before the season thought might be a little
- 11:35Speaker 1: tougher than they are.
- 11:37Speaker 3: Yeah. Like Clemson, for example, I think the wheels are
- 11:40Speaker 3: about to fall off that bus. I mean, they might be,
- 11:43Speaker 3: it seems like they might be in shambles by the
- 11:45Speaker 3: time we get to them. You know, we always play
- 11:48Speaker 3: Miami close. Miami was really good when they had Cam
- 11:51Speaker 3: Ward and we went down there and, you know, went
- 11:52Speaker 3: to the wire with them, you know, came down to
- 11:54Speaker 3: the Hail Mary play. They got the win, obviously, you know,
- 11:57Speaker 3: we always play them close. Virginia's looking good early. I mean,
- 12:01Speaker 3: it was NC State. How bad is NC State? We
- 12:03Speaker 3: don't know. But we always play them. It's always competitive
- 12:06Speaker 3: rivalry games. You know, toss up. Anything can happen. Who
- 12:09Speaker 3: wants it more? So the schedule is kind of looking
- 12:12Speaker 3: good for us. Cal does not look like a threat.
- 12:16Speaker 3: UCLA beat the brakes off them. So I'm not I'm
- 12:19Speaker 3: not too worried about anybody, really. But Miami on the schedule.
- 12:25Speaker 1: What do you guys have coming, you know, the games tomorrow,
- 12:27Speaker 1: but what do you guys have coming over the next
- 12:29Speaker 1: few days, few weeks?
- 12:30Speaker 2: Where can people follow you?
- 12:31Speaker 1: What kind of content you guys drop in and give
- 12:33Speaker 1: us a, give us a plug here for a minute.
- 12:36Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 12:37Speaker 2: 1999 a.m.
- 12:38Speaker 3: The Berg. We're going to drop the space after the
- 12:41Speaker 3: game tomorrow. So we'll run the show tomorrow. Everybody hop
- 12:44Speaker 3: in on the Twitter space. You can follow us there.
- 12:46Speaker 3: It's at 1999 a.m. The Berg. You can follow me
- 12:49Speaker 3: on Twitter as well. My cohost, Maddie B. I'm at
- 12:52Speaker 3: VT4L underscore Joe. Matty B is just at Matty Blacksburg.
- 12:57Speaker 3: So tune in. Hop in the space. Let's hear your
- 13:00Speaker 3: thoughts after the game. And then we'll run a regular
- 13:03Speaker 3: show back to regular schedule next week.
- 13:04Speaker 1: Do you have a score prediction in this one?
- 13:09Speaker 3: I do. I am going 42-10. I like it.
- 13:13Speaker 2: I like it. Another comfortable win for James Franklin. Get
- 13:15Speaker 2: to 2-0.
- 13:16Speaker 1: And then next Saturday night in Maryland, not far from
- 13:21Speaker 1: where you guys are at all, I think that's one
- 13:24Speaker 1: that a lot of people want to see.
- 13:26Speaker 2: What does it look like when they go on the road?
- 13:27Speaker 2: What does it look like when they play an.
- 13:29Speaker 1: Opponent with somewhat of a pulse? Not that I think
- 13:32Speaker 1: Maryland's great by any means, but probably better than the
- 13:35Speaker 1: last two opponents.
- 13:37Speaker 2: I think that's going to be really exciting.
- 13:39Speaker 1: Virginia Tech is one of those teams to watch this year. Joe,
- 13:42Speaker 1: I appreciate you a ton for taking some time this
- 13:44Speaker 1: morning and chatting. We'll talk to you soon, man.
- 13:47Speaker 3: Talk to you soon. Everybody tune in to that Maryland game.
- 13:49Speaker 3: There's some history there. James Franklin and Mike Loxley do
- 13:52Speaker 3: not like each other. They previously worked together, so might
- 13:56Speaker 3: get a little bad blood early in the year.
- 13:59Speaker 1: I'm thankful it's a night game. No, I'm glad that, like,
- 14:03Speaker 1: all of the juice will be in that one.
- 14:05Speaker 2: So appreciate you, buddy.
- 14:07Speaker 3: Yes, sir. Thanks, guys.
- 14:08Speaker 1: Appreciate Joe for joining us this morning to talk Virginia
