- 0:00Speaker 1: Let's talk a little bit about the other side of this,
- 0:04Speaker 1: like almost rivalry matchup. That's just happening with the wrong rivals,
- 0:07Speaker 1: Michigan and Oklahoma presented by prize picks for a few minutes. Um, Tom,
- 0:13Speaker 1: I'll start with, I'll start with you again on this one,
- 0:15Speaker 1: because obviously we had the controversy and the drama and
- 0:18Speaker 1: everything that we've talked about win or loss for Michigan,
- 0:21Speaker 1: the issues that they had, um, on Saturday night in
- 0:26Speaker 1: the big house against central Michigan.
- 0:29Speaker 2: Do you expect Michigan?
- 0:31Speaker 1: I talked about this with FSU and New Mexico state
- 0:33Speaker 1: the other day when I said, I expect Florida state
- 0:34Speaker 1: to play better, but I think the opponent's better too.
- 0:36Speaker 1: And so how much will that, do you think Michigan
- 0:39Speaker 1: plays better in this game because the opponent's better, but well,
- 0:43Speaker 1: how much will that matter with playing a team that
- 0:45Speaker 1: is significantly better than central Michigan?
- 0:49Speaker 3: I expect a better performance from Michigan in this game.
- 0:52Speaker 3: I don't expect them to win. I think given the
- 0:54Speaker 3: outcome and the controversy surrounding the Western Michigan game, I
- 0:58Speaker 3: won't even call it a win. Michigan has a lot
- 1:02Speaker 3: to clean up, and you could see throughout that Western
- 1:04Speaker 3: Michigan game that Kyle Whittingham was furious. That is not
- 1:07Speaker 3: a Kyle Whittingham team. Most of his teams are very,
- 1:10Speaker 3: very disciplined, not nearly as many penalties, far more buttoned up.
- 1:15Speaker 3: You were encouraged by the fact that the defense was
- 1:17Speaker 3: so good that they kept you in the game like that,
- 1:19Speaker 3: but you looked at the offense and you're like, what
- 1:21Speaker 3: in the world is going on? Everybody is going after
- 1:24Speaker 3: Bryce Underwood. I know I went after Bryce Underwood in
- 1:26Speaker 3: our post-game show last week. But, like, there's a lot
- 1:30Speaker 3: that needs to be corrected. What do you do offensively
- 1:34Speaker 3: against Oklahoma's defense that is actually going to put a
- 1:37Speaker 3: dent in the Sooners? Like, you're going up against the
- 1:40Speaker 3: best defensive coordinator in, what, the last 20, 30 years.
- 1:44Speaker 2: In this sport?
- 1:46Speaker 3: And Brent Venables knows your quarterback struggles with processing, has
- 1:49Speaker 3: bad mechanics, and he wants to put you into passing situations,
- 1:53Speaker 3: I think Oklahoma is going to take away the running
- 1:55Speaker 3: game because Western Michigan did a pretty good job limiting
- 1:58Speaker 3: the running game for Michigan, which was genuinely surprising. I
- 2:01Speaker 3: think you'll see a better effort from Michigan in this game.
- 2:04Speaker 3: But if I'm Oklahoma, I'm putting a bunch of dudes
- 2:07Speaker 3: in the box, and I'm daring Bryce Underwood to beat
- 2:10Speaker 3: you with his arm, and I am rushing the hell
- 2:12Speaker 3: out of him to force him to make bad throws.
- 2:15Speaker 3: off platform and make decisions quickly because he has been inaccurate.
- 2:19Speaker 3: His decision-making has been rough. He doesn't seem to process
- 2:22Speaker 3: what's going on downfield very well. And I just, I
- 2:26Speaker 3: don't love this as a matchup overall. The flip side
- 2:30Speaker 3: for me is how much does John mature? How much
- 2:33Speaker 3: different does John mature look in this game? Because you tap,
- 2:37Speaker 3: like how much do we really learn about what Oklahoma
- 2:39Speaker 3: state Oklahoma can be offensively? Excuse me. Have they figured
- 2:44Speaker 3: out a running game? Has Oklahoma figured out a way
- 2:46Speaker 3: to run the football against what will be a good
- 2:48Speaker 3: defense in Michigan on the road in an environment where
- 2:50Speaker 3: they need to win that sort of situation? So I
- 2:53Speaker 3: think this is going to feel similar to the way
- 2:56Speaker 3: the Notre Dame Wisconsin game felt this past weekend. It's
- 3:00Speaker 3: going to be tight, I think, in the first half
- 3:02Speaker 3: and a little bit into the third quarter. And then
- 3:04Speaker 3: I think you're steadily going to see Oklahoma pull away.
- 3:07Speaker 3: I don't think it's going to be that same final
- 3:09Speaker 3: score that you saw for Notre Dame in Wisconsin.
- 3:11Speaker 2: I think that was, what, 40-something?
- 3:13Speaker 3: 41-13. Yeah, I don't think it's going to balloon to
- 3:15Speaker 3: be that high, but it's going to feel that way.
- 3:19Speaker 3: I feel like Oklahoma leaves no doubt in the second half.
- 3:23Speaker 4: I think that what you look at in this game
- 3:24Speaker 4: is how much can you take out of Bryce Underwood's
- 3:27Speaker 4: hands to make it an easier path to keep this
- 3:30Speaker 4: as low-scoring as possible. Because when I look at Bryce
- 3:33Speaker 4: Underwood's film, and I went back and I watched that
- 3:35Speaker 4: game on my own dime, Because if I, for some reason,
- 3:38Speaker 4: am a sicko and just want to watch pure pain.
- 3:41Speaker 4: There's not a lot to take away.
- 3:42Speaker 2: That's good.
- 3:43Speaker 4: In fact, I would even say when you look back
- 3:44Speaker 4: at that first drive, he got bailed out of trouble
- 3:46Speaker 4: with the J.J. Buchanan play. Like, there's not a lot
- 3:49Speaker 4: of good from that tape. And the last thing that
- 3:50Speaker 4: you can say is, oh, we're going to get right. Yeah,
- 3:53Speaker 4: I believe that Bryce Underwood, and honestly, Michigan can get right.
- 3:57Speaker 4: You don't get right against Brent Venables' defense.
- 4:00Speaker 2: You just don't.
- 4:01Speaker 4: It's not possible.
- 4:02Speaker 2: Cole, I'm sorry to interrupt you. is there a worse matchup?
- 4:06Speaker 1: If you struggle offensively, is there a worse matchup possible
- 4:10Speaker 1: in college football than Brent Venables coming to your house?
- 4:12Speaker 4: No.
- 4:13Speaker 1: Going on the road maybe could make it worse, but like,
- 4:15Speaker 1: just matchup for matchup.
- 4:17Speaker 4: Going to Norman and playing in his house.
- 4:19Speaker 1: Just coach alone. There's not a worse matchup right now
- 4:23Speaker 1: for Michigan. And that's what scares me so much for Michigan.
- 4:25Speaker 1: Not that I care either way who wins, but like,
- 4:28Speaker 1: If I'm Michigan, I'm like, it had to be that
- 4:30Speaker 1: guy this week. It couldn't be like Norvell or somebody
- 4:35Speaker 1: like that.
- 4:35Speaker 2: Like Tony White, what's he doing this week?
- 4:37Speaker 4: Why can't we play UTEP this week before we take
- 4:40Speaker 4: on Graham Venables?
- 4:41Speaker 2: Yes.
- 4:42Speaker 4: Why do we have to take him after?
- 4:43Speaker 2: No, again.
- 4:45Speaker 4: There's a lot of problems with this offense outside of
- 4:46Speaker 4: Bryce Underwood. The inability to run the football I thought
- 4:49Speaker 4: was massive in that game against Western Michigan. Savion Heider
- 4:52Speaker 4: and Jordan Marshall finished with less yards than Bryce Underwood did.
- 4:57Speaker 4: And they almost had the same combined yards that Bryce
- 4:59Speaker 4: Underwood did. So it's like you weren't able to run
- 5:00Speaker 4: the football. Wide receivers weren't getting on open. The offensive line,
- 5:04Speaker 4: not holding a block, not creating running lanes was awful.
- 5:08Speaker 4: And this is a defensive line that will get after you.
- 5:10Speaker 1: Hey, guys, I'll get right back to the clip of
- 5:12Speaker 1: the Power 2 here on College Football Addiction. But first,
- 5:14Speaker 1: we picked all these more or less options on our
- 5:17Speaker 1: live show, the Power 2. You can go check out
- 5:19Speaker 1: that full episode over on College Football Addiction. Make sure, one,
- 5:23Speaker 1: you are subscribed here on the channel affiliates or the
- 5:25Speaker 1: College Football Addiction channel. Also, make sure you're over there
- 5:28Speaker 1: with prize picks on the app. Play a $ 5 lineup.
- 5:31Speaker 1: New users who do that with the code HMA will
- 5:33Speaker 1: get $ 150 in lineups if they win. I've heard from
- 5:36Speaker 1: several of you who've already done this. A lot of
- 5:38Speaker 1: fun lines this week. Go check them out. We appreciate
- 5:40Speaker 1: PricePix for their support. I took the more in just
- 5:43Speaker 1: about everything. I got the less in Arch Manning's total,
- 5:45Speaker 1: but go check out the PricePix app. We appreciate them
- 5:48Speaker 1: for their support.
- 5:49Speaker 4: The thing is that I still believe that one game
- 5:52Speaker 4: shouldn't define your entire season, so you are going to
- 5:54Speaker 4: be able to get better play from this offense personnel
- 5:58Speaker 4: of Michigan. The question is, can you do it in
- 6:00Speaker 4: the way of where Bryce Underwood runs it a lot,
- 6:02Speaker 4: or that you trust that Jordan Marshall and Savion Heider
- 6:05Speaker 4: can hit the outside corners, and that they're going up
- 6:07Speaker 4: to the second level of defense, and they're gaining six
- 6:09Speaker 4: and seven, and they're running clocked down, and they're able
- 6:12Speaker 4: to keep this as low-scoring affair as possible. From the
- 6:15Speaker 4: Oklahoma side of things... Are you able to establish your
- 6:18Speaker 4: dominance against this defensive line in the rushing attack to
- 6:21Speaker 4: finally start getting people to corral the box. That way
- 6:23Speaker 4: you can take those deep shots down the field to
- 6:25Speaker 4: Terrell Harris, to Isaiah Satanga, to Araki Beers. That's what
- 6:29Speaker 4: I wonder in this game. Or is it going to be,
- 6:31Speaker 4: we have to throw the football because that defensive line
- 6:34Speaker 4: isn't going to allow us to run it efficiently. So
- 6:37Speaker 4: in that case, is that a worrisome? Just because you
- 6:40Speaker 4: still were trying to figure out what John Mateer is
- 6:41Speaker 4: going to be. I thought John Mateer played fine against UTEP.
- 6:44Speaker 4: I was more impressed with the receivers being able to
- 6:46Speaker 4: break on open and make plays in space. I don't
- 6:49Speaker 4: know if you're going to get that against Michigan's defense.
- 6:51Speaker 4: You will get some completions and you certainly will move
- 6:54Speaker 4: the sticks, but I'm not sold that you're going to
- 6:56Speaker 4: see as many explosive, oh my God, look at that
- 6:59Speaker 4: running lane that Rocky Beers has for a gain of 32.
- 7:02Speaker 4: Look at that wide open range for Isaiah Satang going
- 7:04Speaker 4: to push it on in for 56 yards into the house.
- 7:07Speaker 4: I think that special teams will play a major role
- 7:09Speaker 4: in this game. Literally, Tate Sandell and his leg is
- 7:13Speaker 4: going to be crucial to make sure that you continue
- 7:15Speaker 4: to check away. Satanga with the punt return, setting up
- 7:18Speaker 4: great field position, is going to be crucial in this game.
- 7:21Speaker 4: I think that Michigan is going to get right because
- 7:24Speaker 4: I just have too much respect for Kyle Whittingham. Kyle
- 7:28Speaker 4: Whittingham is a guy who I appreciate came on out
- 7:31Speaker 4: and said, he's not my quarterback full-time if I don't.
- 7:34Speaker 3: Want him to be.
- 7:35Speaker 4: I don't care what they're paying him. I didn't sign
- 7:37Speaker 4: up for this. I signed up to win football games
- 7:40Speaker 4: and change this culture and bring it back to a level.
- 7:42Speaker 4: If he's not doing his job in my eyes, sorry Portnoy,
- 7:45Speaker 4: pay whatever you got to get out of this contract
- 7:47Speaker 4: to get me a quarterback, but I'm not dealing with
- 7:48Speaker 4: this anymore. The problem is that you can get right,
- 7:52Speaker 4: you don't get right against a Brent Venables team. And
- 7:54Speaker 4: that's the issue in this game, is that even if
- 7:56Speaker 4: you say this looks different for Michigan, are you really
- 8:00Speaker 4: going to look that different against a Venables defense that
- 8:02Speaker 4: has talent at every level that's all-American play? I agree
- 8:06Speaker 4: with Tom on one thing. This is going to be
- 8:07Speaker 4: a very low-scoring first half. I may even be so
- 8:10Speaker 4: fair to say, hey, it's 10-6.
- 8:12Speaker 2: It's Louisville, it's Louisville.
- 8:14Speaker 3: Ole Miss.
- 8:15Speaker 4: It's 10-6. It's can you do it for four quarters,
- 8:18Speaker 4: and that's where you lose me.
- 8:19Speaker 1: I took the over in that game, and at 3-0
- 8:21Speaker 1: after the first quarter, I was just like, boy, what
- 8:23Speaker 1: an idiot you are. And they covered with ease. So
- 8:26Speaker 1: appreciate you, Louisville. Appreciate you, Ole Miss, for what you
- 8:29Speaker 1: did for me on Sunday night. Before Monday, unfortunately, happened. Yeah,
- 8:36Speaker 1: I mean, the path to an upset, Cause it's still
- 8:39Speaker 1: less than a touchdown spread, right? Like we're, you know,
- 8:42Speaker 1: not saying it's going to be a blowout. At least
- 8:44Speaker 1: Vegas isn't the path to an upset is just to
- 8:47Speaker 1: hope that Oklahoma's offense hasn't taken the leap that they
- 8:51Speaker 1: should have taken over the last year.
- 8:53Speaker 2: And Michigan's defense is still really good.
- 8:57Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 8:57Speaker 3: You're, you're hoping that John Mateer is not improved. I
- 9:00Speaker 3: think your hope is John Mateer turns the ball over
- 9:03Speaker 3: a bunch on the road. But John Mateer also last
- 9:06Speaker 3: year in this game, granted at home, ran the hell out.
- 9:08Speaker 2: Of the football.
- 9:09Speaker 3: So they found ways against Michigan last year to get
- 9:12Speaker 3: the job done. Will they be able to do the same?
- 9:15Speaker 3: I think with a renewed vigor in terms of trying
- 9:17Speaker 3: to find a running game, it's going to be better.
- 9:19Speaker 3: I want to see how Mateer looks against a power
- 9:22Speaker 3: two defense. I think that's going to be a better
- 9:24Speaker 3: test than what we saw from him at UTEP. So
- 9:27Speaker 3: that's going to be important to me. When it comes
- 9:30Speaker 3: down to Bryce Underwood, it's not a make or break game.
- 9:34Speaker 3: And I know there's a lot of people that are like,
- 9:36Speaker 3: when are we going to see Tommy Carr, CJ Carr's
- 9:38Speaker 3: little brother, backup quarterback at Michigan. So there's that connective tissue,
- 9:42Speaker 3: but I don't think it's in this game. I love
- 9:46Speaker 3: the fact that Kyle Whittingham said publicly, he's a quarterback
- 9:48Speaker 3: right now. And that's not, despite the $ 12 million that
- 9:52Speaker 3: the Ellison's and Portnoy have dished out for Bryce Underwood
- 9:56Speaker 3: for him to say that publicly and as comfortably as
- 9:58Speaker 3: he said, it tells me that when he took the job,
- 10:01Speaker 3: they probably were like, hey, this is your discretion to
- 10:04Speaker 3: figure out who's playing, who's not playing, all that sort
- 10:06Speaker 3: of stuff. So it's not necessarily as close to what
- 10:09Speaker 3: we experience in the NFL when a guy gets drafted
- 10:12Speaker 3: number one overall and he stays the starter even though
- 10:15Speaker 3: he's struggling. It's like there's a lot of money attached
- 10:17Speaker 3: to his name. Bryce Underwood... I will be the first
- 10:20Speaker 3: person to admit he has gotten a raw deal at Michigan.
- 10:23Speaker 3: He walked in, he was in a horrible situation last
- 10:26Speaker 3: year with no quarterback coach. Now he's trying to figure
- 10:29Speaker 3: everything out in year two, and the expectations are through
- 10:32Speaker 3: the roof. And he's put a lot of that on himself,
- 10:34Speaker 3: so it's not exactly that he's a victim in all this.
- 10:41Speaker 3: I don't think Underwood loses his job in this game.
- 10:43Speaker 3: If he does get pulled, I'd be really surprised. He'd
- 10:46Speaker 3: have to be playing absolutely perfect. horribly to the point
- 10:49Speaker 3: where it's you're a detriment to the offense by being
- 10:51Speaker 3: on the field and you need to fix some things
- 10:54Speaker 3: so i don't think this make or breaks underwood's career
- 10:57Speaker 3: at michigan or in college football i think it's a
- 10:59Speaker 3: little too early for people to be saying he's a
- 11:01Speaker 3: bust i've heard that from a lot of different national
- 11:04Speaker 3: media pundits who want to be first to say it
- 11:06Speaker 3: i get it this is a what 19 year old
- 11:08Speaker 3: kid 19 year old kid How many times in the
- 11:11Speaker 3: history of college football before the NIL and transfer portal
- 11:14Speaker 3: era have we seen a guy start from freshman year
- 11:16Speaker 3: all the way through his senior year? And boy, did
- 11:18Speaker 3: he suck freshman year, but senior year he got real good.
- 11:21Speaker 3: And we just don't allow the time for that stuff anymore.
- 11:23Speaker 3: There's still time for Underwood to figure these things out.
- 11:26Speaker 3: He's got to humble himself, and that's the thing. If
- 11:29Speaker 3: he got benched, I don't think he humbles himself at all.
- 11:33Speaker 3: There's a lot of components to this for Whittingham and
- 11:35Speaker 3: Michigan to manage from a quarterback standpoint. Biggest thing against Oklahoma,
- 11:39Speaker 3: you need a lot of stuff to break your way.
- 11:42Speaker 3: You have to win the turnover battle. Time of possession,
- 11:45Speaker 3: you have to win.
- 11:45Speaker 4: You have to win the time of possession.
- 11:46Speaker 3: God, you've got to run the hell out of the football.
- 11:49Speaker 3: And if it's a situation where Bryce Underwood only throws
- 11:51Speaker 3: the ball ten times and he's your number two tailback
- 11:54Speaker 3: or even your number one running back, that might be
- 11:57Speaker 3: the path to victory, but it's a slim chance.
- 12:00Speaker 4: I will explain pretty efficiently why I think Oklahoma wins
- 12:03Speaker 4: this football game. Because if I would trust both these quarterbacks,
- 12:06Speaker 4: if you said they got to run it 17 times,
- 12:08Speaker 4: screw it. I believe that both can do it 17 times.
- 12:11Speaker 4: There is not a single thing on that tape that
- 12:13Speaker 4: I saw last week that says that Bryce Underwood can
- 12:16Speaker 4: make the right throws and the right reads at the
- 12:18Speaker 4: right time. I believe that I can at least get
- 12:20Speaker 4: a little bit of that in John Mateer. And honestly,
- 12:22Speaker 4: that might be enough in this game. One or two
- 12:25Speaker 4: really good throws downfield. Remember the throw that you saw
- 12:28Speaker 4: Isaiah Satanga make in the Auburn game? While everyone said
- 12:30Speaker 4: it was an illegal play, but it was right on
- 12:32Speaker 4: the money. Easy touchdown play. That might be just enough
- 12:36Speaker 4: to guarantee that Oklahoma wins this football game. Because I
- 12:38Speaker 4: can't trust that Bryce Underwood will make that throw. In fact,
- 12:41Speaker 4: in my opinion, I agree with Tom. If you throw
- 12:43Speaker 4: it 13 times in this game, that's a win in itself.
- 12:46Speaker 4: If you throw it anymore, you're right in your own
- 12:48Speaker 4: death sentence. You need to run it. You need to
- 12:50Speaker 4: run it a lot. And more specifically, you need to
- 12:53Speaker 4: make sure that Bryce Underwood is not putting the ball
- 12:55Speaker 4: in harm's way because he sure as hell did enough
- 12:57Speaker 4: of that last week.
