- 0:39Welcome back to a hamster with a blunt penknife the Doctor Who
- 0:43commentary podcast. I'm Jason Thompson again.
- 0:49I mean you know that by now you've been listening to
- 0:50episodes 1-5. You know, it's going to be me
- 0:52doing episode 6. And of course I'm here with Joe
- 0:55Ford without whom this would not be hamster with a blunt
- 0:57penknife, so hello Joe oh yeah you are the people have been
- 1:01listening to us now for nearly two weeks.
- 1:05Well, if they manage to sit through all the master plan,
- 1:07that's fine. You spit that one up over three
- 1:12sessions, didn't he say, I've from now on our brought this up
- 1:16earlier in the story, but I do have a question for you, about
- 1:20robots. In your eyes, go for it.
- 1:23Well, I see that a couple of episodes have come out recently.
- 1:26So what's the latest you've recorded?
- 1:30What's the latest we've recorded while I think?
- 1:35We're about six steps but yeah, we've we've got quite a few in
- 1:43the bank so it's a nice place to be, you know?
- 1:48Yeah, it is. But unlike you Joe, we don't get
- 1:51multiple episodes out of a single recording, One recording
- 1:54one episode. As I said it's a nice genius
- 1:57thing ever. No editing and seven episodes up
- 2:02to recordings. I mean God.
- 2:05It's the Lazy Man's podcasting people seem to like it, but it
- 2:09works. It's very good.
- 2:10Very enjoyable. While I can you please Regale us
- 2:15then with your full score but the Cliffhanger of episode 5 of,
- 2:20even of those we have cell is very, very unusual episode 5 of
- 2:25the evil of the Daleks. I rated 10 out of 10 on my my
- 2:30thread and you don't give those out easily.
- 2:34I do not know but I what did I say I said oh what a cracker.
- 2:38This one is we've heard characters.
- 2:40Supposing that adding the human factor will make the Daleks even
- 2:43more dangerous. But what a Twist to happen being
- 2:45playful and carting the doctor around for a ride.
- 2:48This is also a turning point for the whole story that is this as
- 2:52it is this childlike nature that provides the resolution to it, a
- 2:55key moment and if it only existed sure to be a memorable
- 2:58image and then tell e, snaps to a quite impressive as well with
- 3:01the doctor being surrounded by Daleks and then Being carried on
- 3:04the front of one of them. Although the image of him
- 3:07standing on the fender of that, Dalek being carried around, does
- 3:10make me wonder what damage he did to that particular tartlet
- 3:13Pro because it's not supposed to carry a human on the front of
- 3:16it. Would you reckon everybody with
- 3:18your Twitter handle? Please certainly, it's at Jason
- 3:22underscore. Jtt will you please go and find
- 3:26at Alcott? He's out again at Jason
- 3:29underscore jtt because that's the sort of fabulous insight
- 3:33Going to get into these Cliffhangers when you do.
- 3:35All right. I don't always agree with you
- 3:37and that's only right and good because if we all thought the
- 3:39same, the world would be a very boring Place.
- 3:42Boy, you make me think about things.
- 3:45Well, I'm glad to have be having that effect.
- 3:47I hope that people are enjoying the threads.
- 3:49I'm always amazed by the level of Engagement that you get on on
- 3:53Twitter. Even, I know that even some
- 3:57people, you know, people don't click the likes or they don't
- 4:00reply. But I know that people are
- 4:01reading them because when I put up polls about things, I get
- 4:04more responses than I expected ever.
- 4:06Yeah, it's absolutely terrible. The clicking like things.
- 4:10I'll occasionally, I like throat comments out there and things
- 4:12like that, but thing. I love that yours is you always
- 4:16say you know you you did on this day.
- 4:19You did video covers, you've done the Cliffhangers and you
- 4:22don't act as another thing. So you always like a bit of an
- 4:24original approach to stuff that I consider to be very well warn,
- 4:29you know? Well, thank you.
- 4:31That's very kind of you to say I just basically I just do what I
- 4:34like and what I hope other people will enable us while
- 4:37doing this podcast. You know, I just do what I want
- 4:40to put it out there and hope someone will bloody well press
- 4:43play. Well, depends on you know how
- 4:46much energy I've got as well. Member.
- 4:47I did a couple of years ago. I did a doctor who Advent
- 4:50calendar where I did Christmas moments counting down from 1224
- 4:53up to Christmas. And then last year I was like I
- 4:56am not the energy for that. So 24 pictures of my cats.
- 4:59That's what you're going to get for the head pin.
- 5:00Calendar, amazing, welcome Toby. Hey do you know it was on this
- 5:05thing lamenting the fact that he pours all this effort and energy
- 5:09into happy times and places and too much information, you know,
- 5:13and and put see things out there R and then he puts out a picture
- 5:15of his dog and the dog gets more like.
- 5:18So, yeah, that's a universal thing for any information that
- 5:24you put a pet picture up that will get way more engaging than
- 5:28anything you do. Yeah, yeah.
- 5:31Sorry. Sorry.
- 5:32Really nice. That is universal what?
- 5:35Oh, it's well, oh, let's see your way from Twitter.
- 5:38Let's head into evil of the Daleks.
- 5:41I believe we're heading to skaro this week.
- 5:43We are indeed. I think the skaro this week, so
- 5:46shall I count us in? And let's do it.
- 5:49Okay. In five, four, three, two, one,
- 5:54go, yes. It's playing.
- 5:58Thank God after that, episode, I'm really scared.
- 6:04And I don't think that we would suspect that this story would
- 6:08end on skaro in episodes. Two, three, and four.
- 6:12No, I don't think we would Would it?
- 6:16It's one of the things that sustains its seven episodes is
- 6:19the fact that it keeps moving in location.
- 6:22It's I do think though it is a little I remember I listen to
- 6:25the soundtrack The First Time and the gear shift of.
- 6:29Okay well we're just going to blow up the house and we're
- 6:32going to send off all these extraneous characters.
- 6:34It felt a little clunky. Yeah, I suppose it is a little
- 6:39bit but I rather like it but yeah, I really enjoyed the start
- 6:44of this episode with the Daleks playing games master, if it
- 6:49doesn't seem terribly impressed with it all.
- 6:53I mean, these are, these are not the Daleks that are gonna give
- 6:56him the promised metal into gold secret.
- 6:59No, definitely not. Do you think when obviously
- 7:04Daleks has sort of evil bastards that go around killing people is
- 7:08fun, but you think sort of deviations from that like this
- 7:12it always works. It's hard to say because it
- 7:18hasn't happened that often. Well like paradise was very
- 7:22different as well, wasn't it? I am your servant.
- 7:25Yeah, I think that worked brilliantly.
- 7:27I know I've seen a few people who say they hate that.
- 7:30The Daleks should never be in that position.
- 7:34They should never be doing that, but I love it because they're
- 7:37starting off at a disadvantage. They have to manipulate the
- 7:41people to get what they want. I think it does usually work
- 7:44when they do it. The mystery in Victory of the
- 7:48Daleks as to why the Daleks are being servants.
- 7:52Even though that is lifted straight out, power of the
- 7:54Daleks even to the intonation in it, Briggs uses for.
- 7:58I am your soldier and they don't hide that.
- 8:00Do they at all? No, that's that's that's wearing
- 8:04its influence proudly on its sleeve.
- 8:09Here we are alpha beta and Omega.
- 8:12Three dollars with names. And that they've written on the
- 8:16Daleks just like the how they used to do that on the set in
- 8:20the original. Dalek story just so they could
- 8:22tell them apart. Yes I like number one move to
- 8:25your right I love the movement here on the animation.
- 8:31Yeah they're just having a great deal of fun.
- 8:33I wonder how well that translated on the on the real
- 8:37episode because I know that by this point, the Dalek operators
- 8:40were fairly Adept at what they would doing now is not a good
- 8:43time to try and eat the microphone.
- 8:45Nala, talking about Q animals. Our horror.
- 8:52It's what you are look. No busy.
- 8:54See busy. Oh look.
- 8:56She took one. Look at the Daleks and ran off.
- 9:02What is quite a fee? You know to suggest playful
- 9:06movement with an inanimate shell.
- 9:09It's like Twice. One of the things that the
- 9:13operators, it this time the 60s and in the Pertwee stories as
- 9:17well. We're pretty good at was,
- 9:18keeping them fairly well animated.
- 9:21Yeah. Constantly twitching, I mean
- 9:23infamously of course there's that sequence in death to the
- 9:26Daleks where there are four Daleks.
- 9:27And clearly, only three operators is one of them is one
- 9:31of the mrs. Barwick fell asleep in a
- 9:32meeting. You know, it's if you're either
- 9:34contrary to that one where Psy town is there and he's going
- 9:38well, why don't you just get a stick and poke it or something?
- 9:41It looks ridiculous that he's really taking Michael Bryant the
- 9:44task. Yeah, fair enough because by all
- 9:47accounts be four Daleks You have to be what career did you ever
- 9:58listen to the audio story? Jubilee?
- 10:01Yes. Where they had midgets imported
- 10:06so they can be put into dialects.
- 10:09I want didn't fit so they chopped his arm off.
- 10:11Yep, Spritzee. That was a that was a weird,
- 10:17weird story. Although, for previously went to
- 10:19those legs. No, no, they didn't.
- 10:25Because fats are still bubbling. Yeah, I don't.
- 10:28There's a mysterious box attached to the floor in the
- 10:31laboratory. What could it be?
- 10:34Is that the bomb? That's the bomb.
- 10:37Oh my God. Total Destruction.
- 10:40Yeah, you know this means don't you.
- 10:44He's never going to get the results that I experiment.
- 10:47No, it's going to record that glassware.
- 10:50Yeah, that's fine. Lovely house as well.
- 10:53Yes. Well, not for much longer now.
- 10:59And then he's pissed as if he's pissed about the house being
- 11:01destroyed and then they're like, well, here's the secret it.
- 11:03So he doesn't care anymore. Yeah.
- 11:08Listen, when they were we get to skaro, that's when his character
- 11:12because very strange, isn't it is suddenly starts e.
- 11:15He attacks Victoria one point, doesn't he?
- 11:19He does. Yeah.
- 11:20We supposedly under duress. Yeah, it does.
- 11:26All go a bit weird. He stops pretending to be a
- 11:29Dalek. Who will know?
- 11:32He is a Dalek is me. He's a darling.
- 11:34He's turned into one. Yeah, very weird but not for a
- 11:38while just yet. Now, I know we gotta lose the
- 11:41house first. Yeah.
- 11:44Because yes go and fetch the doctor.
- 11:46So just stands and shouts out the door doctor.
- 11:50This is the moment where water-filled is realized, what
- 11:52Max table is done. So is this their big
- 11:56confrontation? Now this is their big
- 11:58confrontation. Yes, it's about homie.
- 12:02Grow a spine though. You could say that?
- 12:05Yeah. Yeah.
- 12:09But I think I think I was a John Bailey playing here.
- 12:18Really good. So watching the dialogue now I'm
- 12:21seeing this heated extra, you sold yourself out to them.
- 12:24Haven't you the maximal just goes, you fool.
- 12:27Yes. You've brought this misery down
- 12:31upon us? Yeah, and I don't match the ball
- 12:35trying is like you know when they could be metal into gold as
- 12:37if that's what was going to go. Oh right then well don't worry
- 12:42danger I don't worry about it. Okay?
- 12:45As long as you're doing it all for a good reason, we'll be
- 12:47rich. Do we know what this field as he
- 12:53did for a living, you know, in the past?
- 12:56No, not at all. The only thing we know about him
- 12:59is in episode 2. When Max double says Waterfield
- 13:03is an expert in certain technical matters.
- 13:06Okay, well presumably he and Max table.
- 13:08Both scientists have some description.
- 13:11He's an expert in arranging. A series of mirrors, to create a
- 13:15time machine apparently. So yes, he makes the greatest
- 13:18breakthrough in the history of Science and no one will ever
- 13:20know because it got blown up unbelievably you know, the big
- 13:24finish audio. Time of the Daleks featuring the
- 13:27eighth doctor and Charlie Pollard stole that idea,
- 13:30straight out of this and it just enriches.
- 13:33Even says he you know, even though the diet's was my biggest
- 13:36because they've got a time machine made out of mirrors and
- 13:38clocks. Yeah, I remember that.
- 13:41That was a mother. I was subscribed to Big finish
- 13:43at that point with the eighth Doctor Who video where you can't
- 13:45know in a second mortgage. Well, exactly.
- 13:49You need a second mortgage and you need a second house to store
- 13:51them all in. Yeah, I can attest to that.
- 13:54Okay. You see that it?
- 13:57A clock said, rails. Yes, they pinch the Rel counter
- 14:04for this one. I don't think that was in the
- 14:06original movies. I think that originally, yeah,
- 14:11well counter from Dalek invasion.
- 14:12Earth 2150, ad. Can I love it the way those
- 14:17pictures? She movies with the, the Tardis
- 14:20doors on the interior found their way into the new series?
- 14:24Yes, definitely. Definitely an influence.
- 14:27That was a great move. Most artists back out there,
- 14:30pretty fast the going as fast as they can.
- 14:33I'm assuming on the original, we never saw the house go up.
- 14:39No, I imagine. It was just a Fade to White kind
- 14:43of thing possibly with a little bit of Of a damp squib,
- 14:46explosion in the dry ice pumped in.
- 14:50Yeah, probably something like that.
- 14:51I love this. Everyone saw coming in the room,
- 14:54one after another laughing. Okay, this part of the story
- 14:57now. It's Yeah, there's the real
- 15:01counter again. But yeah, and this is the bit
- 15:04where we dig out that time machine from episode 2 that we
- 15:07haven't seen. You know, when episode 6 just
- 15:11for, you know, context about a month has gone by it this point.
- 15:15Since we last saw that machine, it's check-offs garlic time
- 15:19machine. Yes, you know, if you're going
- 15:22to use it in episode one, you better damn well.
- 15:24Make sure it's important to the plot later on.
- 15:27Absolutely. We won't ask how the doctor
- 15:29knows? What.
- 15:30Time period to set it to or Y. If there's this time machine,
- 15:34what the hell they're still using the cabinet for?
- 15:38Again, that's going on so they use the time machine to escape.
- 15:43Yeah. Yes.
- 15:46How do you make a time machine transport you through space?
- 15:53Well, I don't know, my watch, I was technically speaking a moron
- 15:57thinking, none of this is making sense.
- 15:59Well, technically speaking, a time machine would have to
- 16:01transmit you through space anyway, because if I sat in my
- 16:05living room and attempted to time travel, One hour into the
- 16:10future. In my living room.
- 16:11I have to work. Count for the fact that mousse,
- 16:16otherwise, I'd end up somewhere else in Space by in the same
- 16:19place in space for different part of time.
- 16:20It's yeah. You have to fix your coordinates
- 16:23around something and figure out what your, what Your relative
- 16:26coordinates are. So yeah, yeah.
- 16:29And it isn't a very it in about 30 seconds as well.
- 16:32I mean, I know he's a clever man.
- 16:35Yes, but there we go. And here we are.
- 16:38The Dalek control of the Dalek Corridor and cells.
- 16:41Suddenly everything saw graded blue, I'll take your word for
- 16:46that. I can't remember because I'm
- 16:47watching the Black and White Version.
- 16:48Yeah. Is it actually looks very
- 16:50effective to I love every time we see Victoria.
- 16:53We get that sort of romantic music, don't we?
- 16:58Yes, yeah, definitely. I mean Jason look at her.
- 17:03She's got camel there now. Indeed, I'm not sure.
- 17:09You know that relationship would be approved of almost certainly
- 17:13not but maximal doesn't care. So Yeah, what does she say you
- 17:18does to work she suddenly screams like a piercing scream,
- 17:23you came up behind me in the dark and twisted my arm.
- 17:26Okay, As long as bad as I was fearing.
- 17:31But what do you think of the, the sets on skaro, the Dalek
- 17:35Corridor and self sets? Yeah, well I think, you know,
- 17:39we've got enough of the Telly snaps and we've got enough.
- 17:43I think this is a fairly sort of accurate representation of how
- 17:46they looked. This is all wrong but I think
- 17:51they're quite effective. They feel big.
- 17:55They do, they do feel big. What I also enjoy about them is,
- 17:59obviously, they're nothing like the last time we saw the Dalek
- 18:02City, but I think actually the making of a bit bigger like that
- 18:07is is an improvement. But I also like the fact that we
- 18:11get those Dalek Corridor sound effects again later, I know what
- 18:16it's all about that weird know, it's sort of like, going off
- 18:19into the distance, isn't it? And then coming back at you.
- 18:22Yeah, I believe it was supposed to be kind of the wind whistling
- 18:26through the corridors in the weird, Acoustics of the, the
- 18:29methyl of the shapes and the metal walls and doors phone.
- 18:32I wonder because you know, they're so big.
- 18:33They run on static. Electricity, saw like the
- 18:35current running about was no current in static actress.
- 18:40See. That's why it's called Static
- 18:41Jay. Alright, that should bring your
- 18:44science. I'm a okay.
- 18:49I'm glad. I really like those establishing
- 18:55shots of the city from the distance.
- 18:58Yes, and they did, they did have this.
- 19:00All Rocky said, didn't they? When they're on the outside,
- 19:04they dids. Although, there was some
- 19:06pictures on Twitter, not that long ago, that showed it.
- 19:08And it's one of those kind of, don't don't show us the studio
- 19:11angles because basically, it's like one side of the studio with
- 19:14a little bit of my okay, a raised platform with some fabric
- 19:18thrown over it to suggest rocks and things and it's still very
- 19:21effective and it's done very nicely.
- 19:23One thing I did think was excellent about All well,
- 19:27particularly in the 60s is when you realize just how little
- 19:31space they had. And I remember watching, I
- 19:34remember. Getting a strange look.
- 19:40Strange look from Zoey one evening.
- 19:42There's always looking at the bed and then I realized that
- 19:47I've been listening to Toby headaches too much information
- 19:49about one of the episodes and Marco Polo.
- 19:51And he'd said that The the jungle or the forest set where
- 19:56tigana and Accomack inspired was a 6 foot by 4 foot corner of the
- 20:01studio with some foliage in it. And it's like, wow, they acted
- 20:04that entire scene on a sequence, the size of basically, a double
- 20:07bed. Yeah, you know that's it's
- 20:10incredible, isn't it fantastic? But I've always said that about
- 20:14those early days is they can just take you around the
- 20:17universe in the corner of lime Grove and and you just go with
- 20:21it, you know? Oh yeah.
- 20:23Power of the Axiom, the terrific direction, and you like those
- 20:27those back cloths that they did. I just admire so much.
- 20:32Oh, they were fabulous, the paintings, and the backdrops
- 20:35were absolutely superb. I mean, generally speaking, it's
- 20:38somewhat sad, really that most of the time when you hear those
- 20:40being discussed, it's when the lighting has gone wrong and
- 20:43people are casting Shadows on the backdrop or the, the back
- 20:46cloth has got creases in it and things like that.
- 20:48But all Richard Martin shot it from the wrong angle.
- 20:51Well, that's very frequent but that's all The scale we gifts,
- 20:55but it does work, that's typically well, and she's
- 20:58crossed. We know his fucking artifice go
- 21:00with it. Well, that's the television and
- 21:04I've said before you go to the theater, everyone's willing to
- 21:07forgive. Yeah.
- 21:08Yeah. We know it's a backdrop and we
- 21:10know that that That wall is actually just a piece of the
- 21:15tail Gunner on a strut and everything.
- 21:17And we know it's all fake because it's a stage and we
- 21:19watching it, but for some reason, we watch things on
- 21:21television, we expect them to be ultra realistic.
- 21:23And if they're not, we pick holes in it.
- 21:26And I find that this is badly. We're obviously not on an alien
- 21:31planet here, we're obviously in a studio but what was
- 21:35astonishing here is I think I think is they get the scale
- 21:38right? Because in a minute we duck into
- 21:41that set with the emperor in it. Hmm it feels big, it feels like
- 21:47Doctor Who you know the biggest it's ever been.
- 21:52It does mean. This is almost I think I may
- 21:56have set on earlier, so this is almost a season finale before
- 21:58season finales were a thing. Yeah, I'll for sure.
- 22:01Yes, you know, this feels big and epic and lime backtick.
- 22:05Yeah, definitely very climactic. And with a definitive ending but
- 22:11thanks. Wait for laser suddenly feels
- 22:13that way. Yeah I do like the Daleks with
- 22:16black domes in this one I like the little just that little bit
- 22:21of difference to show which ones are the leaders.
- 22:25Which are we actually seeing any of the I'm looking for writing.
- 22:31Oh, yeah. There it is.
- 22:32There it is. I'm not sure if it's Alpha Beta.
- 22:35R, Omega it's Omega. Oh yeah, it's my name.
- 22:40The doctor gave it to me. He's my friend.
- 22:46You know what? Like I don't think we've had any
- 22:49psychology anywhere near as interesting as pair of the
- 22:52Daleks and this and they've tried.
- 22:54They tried Ride with us, all human factor, Dalek Factor
- 22:56thing, but the scene where the Dalek goes in and says why why
- 23:03should I obey you? And I that it's that, that up
- 23:06there were some of the stuff in power.
- 23:07The Daleks is I love that scene. 80 is.
- 23:11Yeah, is it is good? I like the Dalek voices in this
- 23:20story as well. I think so.
- 23:23Here's what the Hawking's and skeleton.
- 23:26Yes. Hawkins does dialect voices
- 23:31brilliantly. Well I still in our people say
- 23:34breaks it, Nick Briggs is the voice of the Daleks are still
- 23:36soapy Hawkins, you know. Nick Briggs is great, is good,
- 23:42can't knock him. But unfortunately I've now heard
- 23:45my, you know 240th, Dalek big finish story but Nick brings
- 23:49doing every Dalek so I'm just a bit bored of it now.
- 23:53Yeah. Nothing.
- 23:55But I think Peter Hawkins was why he was the first wasn't me.
- 23:58So yeah. And I think absolutely
- 24:01synonymous with their success, those voices.
- 24:05Definitely, so, one of those, one of those guys that you hear
- 24:09in a lot of things, but don't see him very much, don't see him
- 24:13at all in Doctor, Who the only thing I've actually seen Peter
- 24:16Hawkins, in thinking about it is Dave Allen at large, okay?
- 24:21He's a he's one of the regulars on that series.
- 24:27Why did my suppose screamed your scent?
- 24:30He was ordered to apparently because they want as Victoria
- 24:35realizes, they want to draw the humans in the city on by making
- 24:38noises to draw them in. Check out this, this does have
- 24:44similarities to Daleks master plan, doesn't it?
- 24:48I feel like we've had a lot of episodes now, not Paddy, but
- 24:52sort of a lot of running around and then in the second to last
- 24:57episode, we're going to have sort of a very serious.
- 25:00Serious tone again, in a science fiction setting with a city and
- 25:05then in the last episode is our big sort of climactic final
- 25:09episode. Yeah, I mean David Whittaker
- 25:13wrote the to Patrick will see. There we go.
- 25:18Nothing laughs. Yeah, David Whittaker.
- 25:21Wrote the two trout and garlic stories and he doesn't skimp on
- 25:24the climax. Don't you dare throw that at me.
- 25:29Behave yourself. Or Joe you said something the
- 25:33last episode. Also, I know I'm gonna let it
- 25:35slide. Really, what did I say so along
- 25:41the lines of those taken the doctor from behind and they've
- 25:44taken him for a ride. That's why I was like a must
- 25:48know what he's saying. Surely Health.
- 25:53Absolute filth mind you Fraser Gregory did asked on Twitter.
- 25:56How many times can you get away with the?
- 25:58Look at the size of that thing. Joe No gag.
- 26:02And that's how much in this. So they look at the size of
- 26:05that, I think. Does he say that about the
- 26:06emperor? It does.
- 26:07Yeah, the end of the second thing.
- 26:10Yes, Jamie that is a big one by that is a big one, though.
- 26:14You know, I've never seen bigger if I'm honest.
- 26:19Anyway but you know when it when I brought in the Dalek Emperor
- 26:23in partner the ways. Hmm.
- 26:26I gonna rip on part of the ways, I think it's amazing but I don't
- 26:30think it's anywhere near as impressive as the Dalek Emperor
- 26:32at this. I agree with you entirely and
- 26:38indeed somebody on Twitter, said the say yet.
- 26:41Jim Allen B says, the design of the Dalek Emperor in this story
- 26:45is perfect. It sits there like a spider in a
- 26:48web waiting for the doctor to Look into its Lair, the emperor
- 26:50design in The Parting of the ways is not as good, which
- 26:53version do you prefer and I agree entirely.
- 26:56This one is better. Well, what's interesting is in
- 27:00bad wolf. You've got the controller which
- 27:03is like a spider in a web with all the sort of tubes coming
- 27:07off. And I think that's far more
- 27:08striking than the Dalek Emperor that we get in, in the next
- 27:11episode. Yeah, I agree entirely.
- 27:18You know, we can hear the Dalek heartbeat sound and we're about
- 27:22to meet the Dalek Emperor. Look at the way they're animated
- 27:26creeping about. It's a great.
- 27:31But you know what? I'm actually my brain is tricked
- 27:33a bit Jason because when I'm watching those Daleks, I'm
- 27:36almost tricked into thinking I'm watching live footage.
- 27:41The animated Daleks are superb. It's a nice smooth, isn't it?
- 27:45It is. And I find I found that with the
- 27:48power of the Daleks in particular.
- 27:50They were able to animate the Daleks, as 3D things because
- 27:53they're properly mapped but not the humans.
- 27:55There. Matt animated very much 2D and I
- 27:57find that a little bit jarring in places.
- 27:59The emperor is superb design and it's superbly animated here as
- 28:04well. It's very well animated and it's
- 28:07very well shot. And it's interesting those who
- 28:10say, you know, you get the Look at the size of that thing doctor
- 28:14and from the Telly snaps, you can see that it was shot mostly
- 28:17From Below. To make it look like it's
- 28:22towering over everybody. But then you get some of the
- 28:24production stills of it and you look at it and it's on a raised
- 28:28platform, it's not actually that big, it feels massive.
- 28:33The way it's shot makes it for you absolutely massive, but it's
- 28:35not actually a huge huge. You know, it's like a memory was
- 28:40being on the front cover of Doctor Who magazine.
- 28:42I just bought that magazine are so that's the best thing I've
- 28:45ever seen, you think? And do you think it diminishes
- 28:52the Daleks at all to have? Like it, like it like King of
- 28:57the Daleks? No, I don't think so.
- 29:02Now I think it's I mean they've had the they've had the Dalek
- 29:04Emperor in the comic strip for ages.
- 29:06David Whittaker has just been aching to get it into the series
- 29:09proper as me because we've had the comic strip Emperor with the
- 29:12big gold Sphere for ahead with all their lies going around the
- 29:17diary. Yeah.
- 29:19Or he was a devious bugger you know in those costumes.
- 29:23Absolutely. Yeah.
- 29:24It's a it's a shame we never saw him in the TV series.
- 29:29Yeah it is really how it should be.
- 29:31Consume about that role on mum deodorant in remembrance of the
- 29:34Daleks are, I don't count. Yeah, we've got this one.
- 29:41This super brilliant. Emperor with with his Chumley
- 29:46hat. Here's the top of the Dome on
- 29:49him is a Chamblee. Basically I love and that's the
- 29:52Tardis. My God.
- 29:53We haven't even thought about the Tardis since episode one.
- 29:57No, but now he will take the garlic factor and spread it
- 30:01through the entire history of Earth has like a big moment.
- 30:05Tell me you love this. Cliffhanger, come on.
- 30:08Let's see what I rated this one. Shall we read it out?
- 30:11Come on for everybody. Oh, I rated it 10/10.
- 30:18Hey, what did you say? Well, oh, good question.
- 30:22I just closed the wrong window. Ugh!
- 30:25Well, I'll tell you what, you find that between episodes,
- 30:28because I want to hear what you got to say about that, but but
- 30:32but yeah, I mean, it's not the biggest threat that we face that
- 30:37the doctor is gonna be forced. I got, we know, the doctor will
- 30:40capitulate to Darla commands because he's been doing it
- 30:43throughout this entire story. If, you know, his friends lives
- 30:47are in danger. I'm not sure I quite understand.
- 30:57Half of sexy to you do you get the Dalek factor from the human
- 31:04factor. Oh it's just the exact opposite,
- 31:08I don't know. That's kind of what they're
- 31:11saying, isn't it? Yeah.
- 31:15But it's, it's rather odd really that they needed this whole
- 31:17thing. But yeah, what did I say?
- 31:18I said the Daleks real plan is revealed and we meet the giant
- 31:22Emperor. Dalek, the cereal is starting to
- 31:24take on season finale Vibes, the booming voice of the emperor
- 31:28makes the final line, awesome, and memorable.
- 31:30Another cracker 10/10 10/10 to 10/10 Xin the same serial.
- 31:36That's, that's unusual. It's a rare.
- 31:39Did you do that again? I can't remember.
- 31:42I know I did it for a couple episodes of Power of the Daleks
- 31:45as well. I bet it was I bet it was there.
- 31:50The lettuce and looking for the window and the Daleks been
- 31:54assembled that must have been a 10 out of 10.
- 31:58Well, I'm gonna find out. I don't mean to be facetious but
- 32:02you know, I'm gonna be but like what I feel like this is a very
- 32:05long-winded way to find the doll effect so they just needed to
- 32:08read a couple of psychology books about humans to define the
- 32:12character traits of the average human and then go, right?
- 32:16So the complete opposite of that is that Like Factor.
- 32:20That's what we're going to spread fruit and how do you
- 32:22spread it through time? Well, apparently it gets
- 32:26converted into a steam, don't ask.
- 32:33Okay. So yeah, for power of the Daleks
- 32:36I gave 10/10 to episode two. Oh yeah.
- 32:40That's a goodie. That's when the Daleks watching
- 32:42him, isn't it? Yeah.
- 32:44Episode 2 is I am your servant. Oh yes of course episode 4 which
- 32:51is the production line. Which I thought was really well
- 32:58done in the, in the audio CD with Anika Wills, narrating it
- 33:01when she says that blessed us and finally realizes the Daleks
- 33:04are not just reproducing. They are mass producing.
- 33:08Whoo. And of course, episode 5.
- 33:12That's three. Was it three in one story, three
- 33:15in one story. How about be bettered?
- 33:18Well, we'll see. We'll see as we go through the
- 33:20threat. We were indeed.
- 33:23Yes. Jason, would you care to Embark
- 33:25with me? Now, on the rarest of things in
- 33:28absolute blunt, penknife episode 7.
- 33:32So 7, I would love to do episode 7 with you.
- 33:35Joe, I believe there's only 5 episode 7 is in Doctor.
- 33:39Who is in there by over seven parter.
- 33:43If you got an arrow it to over seven Pastor then.
- 33:46Yeah, I think you're probably right.
- 33:48The Daleks Marco Polo. Evil of the Daleks on 06, the
- 33:56Daleks Marco Polo, evil of the Daleks doctor, with the
- 33:58silurians ambassador's of death and Inferno.
- 34:01Ah, yes of course, but then also 0 07 part but of course we can't
- 34:07forget that there's an episode 7 in The Invasion, the war games
- 34:10and the trial of a Time Lord. Come on.
- 34:13You forgot one. Well, there's a seventh episode
- 34:19in the done like master plan, but it's not called episode 7.
- 34:22I'll fair enough. Oh yeah, you haven't yet.
- 34:35Let's go and do it now. Let's do that.
- 34:37Okay. Well, there's a seventh episode
- 34:19in the done like master plan, but it's not called episode 7.
- 34:22I'll fair enough. Oh yeah, you haven't yet.
- 34:35Let's go and do it now. Let's do that.
- 34:37Okay.
