- 0:01Hey everybody, welcome to the good morning from the Chicken
- 0:04Coop podcast. My name is Kim Johnson and I am
- 0:07a mastermindset, coach, creative strategist, and also happened to
- 0:10be a farmer. This is my chicken coop and I
- 0:12come out here every day to record a podcast to teach
- 0:16distinctions, possibilities, new ways of thinking, and just bring
- 0:20some joy. Into the.
- 0:21World. So welcome to the coop and let's
- 0:23start your day off in a fantastic way.
- 0:27Hey everybody, good afternoon from the chicken coop.
- 0:31I'm recording this in the afternoon because I had to drive
- 0:33Lucas in the morning to his apprenticeship and we have to
- 0:36leave here at the butt crack of dawn to beat the traffic because
- 0:39there's road construction now. So I'm just being very
- 0:42thoughtful and getting it done very early and I'm almost 100%
- 0:46back to myself. I just have a little bit of the
- 0:50coughing happening now, but I'm almost back, so that's really
- 0:53good. All right, today we are talking
- 0:55about allowing yourself to process emotions and not be mad
- 1:01at yourself for it. This conversation has come up
- 1:04multiple times with people today who have said, I'm so frustrated
- 1:07with myself that I'm feeling this way.
- 1:10And I cannot stress enough as somebody who spends all their
- 1:15time dealing with emotions and helping everybody process them
- 1:19that you getting mad that you're having an emotion is not going
- 1:23to help you get rid of that emotion.
- 1:24It's only going to cause exacerbated feelings about it
- 1:28and frustration with it. Your emotions show up because
- 1:31they're giving you information and it's your job to understand
- 1:35what they're trying to tell you, glean from it what you can, and
- 1:39then say, OK, I'm going to choose a different emotion and
- 1:42I'm going to move on and it then it's going to come back again
- 1:45because that's how emotions work.
- 1:47I like to think of this like kind of like ants, you know, you
- 1:51see one Ant, you know there are going to be others that show up
- 1:54with it. And sometimes there's a steady
- 1:56stream of them and they're just beaming in.
- 1:58And that's like how emotions show up.
- 2:00It's like boom, boom, boom, boom, boom, boom, boom.
- 2:01And you're like, Oh my God, where are they all coming from?
- 2:04Where is this anthill? What is happening?
- 2:06And they just show up in force. So beating yourself up for
- 2:11having the emotion or saying the quintessential line of the day
- 2:16was I'm, I thought I got rid of this.
- 2:19Well, you never get rid of all your emotions.
- 2:22If you've read the who's driving your bus book, you know you the,
- 2:25the motions. Our emotions are fixed.
- 2:27They are on our bus in our head. We are driving that bus.
- 2:31And you cannot kick emotions off the bus.
- 2:34They are not the kind of passengers you can pull over and
- 2:36say, hey, get the hell off the bus.
- 2:39It doesn't work that way. The emotions are here and they
- 2:43are here to stay and they are all useful in some way.
- 2:46And if one keeps showing up over and over again and you have
- 2:51really done your homework with like understanding what's it
- 2:54trying to tell me? What is the reason it's showing
- 2:56up? What can I learn from it?
- 2:58All that good stuff. If you've debriefed that emotion
- 3:01and you have made the decision that you want to be out of that
- 3:05emotion, then you simply thank the emotion and choose a new one
- 3:10and it will probably show back up again.
- 3:13And when it shows back up again, our job is again to say, look at
- 3:17you. You're back again, thought I got
- 3:19rid of you just like the ants. And you push it to the point
- 3:22where you're like, OK, Yep, I, I, I hear you.
- 3:25And I'm not doing that anymore. I choose to do this instead.
- 3:30I choose this emotion, I choose this action, I choose something
- 3:34else because it doesn't help to beat yourself up about it.
- 3:38They will come back. Patterns will come back.
- 3:42How you handle things will come back because it's burned into
- 3:46our brains where we, we have patterns that we live in.
- 3:50And it's our job to interrupt the pattern and put something
- 3:52new in. It's just, it's basic, but we
- 3:56don't like it and we get frustrated and we want to just
- 3:59like really be mean to ourselves about it.
- 4:02We are so mean to ourselves sometimes.
- 4:05We wouldn't ever speak to somebody else the way we speak
- 4:07to ourselves in our head. And we have to stop it.
- 4:11I mean, would you talk to a child that way?
- 4:13Would you talk to a relative? Or maybe you talk to a relative
- 4:16that way, but you wouldn't talk to most people that way.
- 4:21And so you have to take into consideration how you're showing
- 4:25up for yourself because you can't fix something if you don't
- 4:28change how you're showing up for yourself.
- 4:30Even if you have to write it all down to get it out of your head.
- 4:34Paper and pencil is a fabulous way to get things out so you can
- 4:39see it and say this is a pattern that shows up When I see this,
- 4:42this happens when I hear this, this happens when I say this,
- 4:45this happens. And then I feel this way and
- 4:48write and, you know, just go right down the line.
- 4:50Follow that, like all those little patterns and curves and
- 4:55corners that they take, get it all down and then you can look
- 4:58at the paper and say, OK, well now I can see why this is
- 5:00ridiculous. Now I can see that this is no
- 5:03good. So nothing is worth being this
- 5:09frustrated about. And everything, everything is in
- 5:12the information that you collect.
- 5:13So be kind to yourself, work yourself through it, ask better
- 5:17questions, and just remember you can't kick them off the bus, my
- 5:20friends. All right, everybody, I hope you
- 5:23have a blessed day and I will see you all tomorrow.
- 5:26Bye.
