- 0:09Hello and welcome to Meet Your Double Feature.
- 0:11My name is Thomas, joined as always by my brother Frank.
- 0:14Frank, how's it going? Excited.
- 0:16Excited. For the recap, is that what this
- 0:18is? Excited for the recap?
- 0:19That is what this is. I'm also excited.
- 0:21If you've been listening to our show so far, you'll know that we
- 0:23just finished our first season talking about forgotten films of
- 0:26the 1990s, and in doing so we have reviewed 24 individual
- 0:31films between the two of us in just under six months, which is
- 0:36kind of nuts to be honest. Pretty cool, Pretty cool.
- 0:40Pretty cool. And So what we're doing for
- 0:42tonight's episode is both for people who've been here all
- 0:45along or maybe anybody who this is their first time listening,
- 0:48we're just going to recap what Season 1 has been about, revisit
- 0:50our thoughts from each pair of films that we've discussed, see
- 0:53if our opinions on any of them have changed in any significant
- 0:56way. I can tease that, Frank, I think
- 0:59you and I have both now gone back and watched one of the
- 1:03movies that we asked the other person to watch.
- 1:05So there's at least a couple on this list that we have both seen
- 1:08and can compare notes on for for once.
- 1:10Oh yeah, yeah, that is true. I I've only watched one of the
- 1:13of the ones that I. Recommend for you something
- 1:15that's always been a thing with us, even before we did this show
- 1:18is like, if I know a movie is good, sometimes I'll be like,
- 1:21Frank already saw this, so I'll just check it off in my head as
- 1:25well, which doesn't make any sense, but that's just how we've
- 1:27operated. Goes in the the shared databank.
- 1:30Shared Databank, which is what this is going to be because
- 1:33we've also, or I've also decided to rank all of the movies based
- 1:37on the individual scores We gave each one out of 10.
- 1:40So that in summary, we'll essentially have our own list of
- 1:43like the top 24 underrated films of the 1990s, which is in a very
- 1:48specific list that I don't think anybody's ever looked for, but
- 1:51they have it now. You you have those scores in
- 1:54front of you because I don't have them handy so.
- 1:57I have. We're going to talk about each
- 1:59pair of movies in the order that the episodes came out as a way
- 2:02for us to trace both the history of our conversation and just the
- 2:05history of the first season of us making Meet Your Double
- 2:07feature. But as we go, especially if
- 2:10you're watching on YouTube with the video version, I'll be
- 2:12updating graphics throughout showing the actual leaderboard
- 2:15based on the scores that we gave at the time.
- 2:17We do have a pretty clear #1 only one movie in this entire
- 2:21list got a 10 out of 10 score from whichever of us reviewed
- 2:24it, so stay tuned for that in case you have not already seen
- 2:27which one that is. I know.
- 2:30Oh yeah, Frank, remember? I was there.
- 2:37All right, so I guess Frank, we'll just move straight in with
- 2:39the two films that we talked about in our premiere episode,
- 2:42Meet Your Double Features Season 1 Episode 1, which I think for a
- 2:46long time in my notes was just called the pilot.
- 2:48That was where we talked about, well, I guess I'll let you go
- 2:51first. What was the first movie I asked
- 2:52you to review for the show? Well, the the title of that
- 2:55episode is a title is important, which I like as like the sort of
- 3:00pilot episode title. So I'll just throw that out
- 3:03there. I like that.
- 3:04I was, I was naming the early episodes based on things we
- 3:06actually said in the episode, because you say at one point
- 3:09talking about your film, a title is important.
- 3:12And I just thought that that struck me right away when when
- 3:14listening back, it's like, Oh yeah, that's it.
- 3:15That's our pilot. Yeah, that's cool.
- 3:18That's cool, and it was because I was talking about the somewhat
- 3:22odd title of the film, Welcome Home Roxy Carmichael, which in
- 3:29hindsight was a really interesting one to talk about
- 3:31for the first episode. Possibly the weirdest movie on
- 3:34this list, like the most unknown.
- 3:37I've still to this day never seen anybody say a word either
- 3:40way about this movie, even though it has multiple like
- 3:43recognizable names in it. Yeah, that's a good point.
- 3:46I mean, like I, I don't have much to to say to revisit with
- 3:51Roxy Carmichael, but it it is reminding me of something
- 3:54completely unrelated in a way. Before we begin something
- 3:59totally different. Completely.
- 4:01Well, no, it ties in because it's the title.
- 4:03You know, I was like, I, I thought this one was an odd
- 4:05title. I remember positing at the time
- 4:07that that might have been part of the reason that it it was
- 4:11somewhat forgotten. It kind of fell in between the
- 4:13cracks of this era. But I just went to go see at the
- 4:17Academy Museum, they'll sometimes do screenings here in
- 4:21LA. And just yesterday I went to go
- 4:23see the screening of Home Alone and Macaulay Culkin and the
- 4:27director, the director, Chris Columbus were there.
- 4:30But I noticed while watching that movie that that that one of
- 4:34the actresses playing Kevin Mcallister's sisters in that
- 4:37movie was played by Hilary Wolf, who you and I have a familiarity
- 4:43with because of that movie. Step kids.
- 4:47Yeah, I think, I'll be honest, I don't think it made it.
- 4:50We talked about Step Kids in an episode in season 1, but I think
- 4:53I cut it for time so people wouldn't have heard that yet.
- 4:55But that's interesting. Was a movie that we kept seeing
- 4:59the trailer for growing up because it was on the VHS of
- 5:03Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 2 Secret of the Use.
- 5:06So anytime we wanted to watch that, we had to Fast forward
- 5:09through the trailer for Step Kids, which I guess in its
- 5:12original incarnation or no, originally it was called Step
- 5:14Kids, but then by the time it released had like a really
- 5:16weird, different title, right? And that's that's why I'm
- 5:19bringing it up because it it's probably one of the worst movie
- 5:22titles I've ever seen. Honestly, it's so bad.
- 5:26It's like in the trailer that we saw it was titled Step Kids,
- 5:30which is fine, but then it was retitled upon release to Big
- 5:34Girls Don't Cry ellipses. They get even, which is just
- 5:39like, yeah, I mean this. Is just in the middle.
- 5:42That's egregious. Yeah, exactly.
- 5:45I mean, this is like I I always joke about like panic at the
- 5:48disco type song titles where it's just like a long run on
- 5:52sentence almost. And like with the whole title's
- 5:55important that we, you know, we talked about in the first
- 5:57episode that just reminded me of this one.
- 6:00And this, I think, is probably the front runner in terms of
- 6:02like, maybe worst movie title I've ever seen.
- 6:05So that's just what that first episode reminded me of.
- 6:09So Roxy Carmichael's not the worst title you've ever seen,
- 6:11but it's a similar problem. Yeah, yeah, I, I, I think that's
- 6:15something I talked about Like, I, I thought Roxy Carmichael was
- 6:17fine. Like, there's there's movies on
- 6:19this list that, you know, especially with the scoring that
- 6:21we did, where I would maybe go back and like, now that I've had
- 6:27some time to reflect on him and seen, you know, several more
- 6:30movies throughout the course of the season that I would look at
- 6:34differently. Roxy Carmichael's probably not
- 6:36one I would like revisit. You know, it's not when I would
- 6:39go back and watch again. It was an interesting one to do
- 6:41for the first episode to kind of like get our feet wet with this
- 6:45concept. Yeah, because it's it's an
- 6:47aggressively 90s movie. It's a type of movie that's not
- 6:50made anymore. It seemed from what you said and
- 6:52what I later saw in trailers to be very like visually, just
- 6:56obviously a 90s film. And for the record, you did give
- 6:59it because we decided from the beginning to do scores out of
- 7:0210, even though as people outside of the show, we don't do
- 7:05that. I think it's usually kind of
- 7:06stupid, but you gave Roxy Carmichael a six out of 10.
- 7:09Which I think it's fair. I think that's fair scoring.
- 7:12And then, you know, as we go on, I, I, I think we've kind of had
- 7:15to adjust our scoring system to to, you know, be more, I don't
- 7:20know, it's difficult. It's a difficult thing to do to,
- 7:22to kind of narrow something down, which like you said, is
- 7:24why we don't normally do it. But I think that's a fair score
- 7:27for Roxy Carmichael. This one, like I, I don't think
- 7:30I'll be watching it again, but it was fine.
- 7:32It was. It was.
- 7:34Yeah, it has Winona Ryder in a post Beetlejuice pre anything
- 7:39else kind of role because she was like in a lot of stuff in
- 7:43the 90s and then dropped off for a while and came back way later
- 7:46as the Mom and Stranger Things. But it's funny to see something
- 7:50from her peak era in the 90s, her first peak, that most people
- 7:54probably would have no idea exists.
- 7:55Yeah, I mean, if you're a big Winona Ryder fan, this would
- 7:58probably be 1 worth. Checking out if you're Winona.
- 8:02Ride or die, if you will. Get out, get out, all right.
- 8:06You're done. But I had a sound effect of a
- 8:08door slamming. Yeah.
- 8:13Welcome home, Roxy Carmichael, 6 out of 10 again.
- 8:15You can hear about that in our first episode.
- 8:17It is interesting. I went back and listened to some
- 8:19of our first episode recently. At the time of recording, we
- 8:22just finished and released episode 11, so the second to
- 8:25last for Season 1. Listening to the first one's
- 8:28crazy because I have a background and you and I both
- 8:31have backgrounds in like media production and broadcasting and
- 8:34film and all this other stuff. But I never sat down and tried
- 8:36to just like do a full audio edit before.
- 8:40And it's immediately episode one has landed in that territory
- 8:43that a lot of creatives get into where they're like, can I just
- 8:46delete the first several things we released because you, you
- 8:50like figure out things later that you end up sticking with
- 8:53that become more of like your template.
- 8:55And you just go back and you're like, God, I wish I could do
- 8:57this again. Can I do like a 20th anniversary
- 9:00remaster for that episode when we get to it?
- 9:04Maybe, yeah, maybe we'll maybe. Oh, that'll be fun.
- 9:06What if we like redid it and then just each watched the other
- 9:10movie? Like you had to talk about Roxy
- 9:12Carmichael and then and. That would be actually really
- 9:15fun. Write that down.
- 9:16Play, play the door slam again, and then write that down.
- 9:21Yeah. Pivoting to the other film we
- 9:24talked about in episode 1, so their first review, Welcome
- 9:26home, Roxy Carmichael. I asked Frank to watch that.
- 9:28He gave it a six out of 10. You asked me to watch Pump Up
- 9:31the Volume from 1990 starring Christian Slater as a pirate
- 9:36radio DJ. High school boy.
- 9:40Yep. I was trying to put that all
- 9:43into one sentence, but it's kind of A2 sentence summary.
- 9:45He has a disaffected teen in a fairly well off neighborhood in
- 9:49California in the 90s who starts an underground radio station
- 9:53where he like speaks truth to power and kind of riles up all
- 9:56the kids in his school to deal with, you know, the problems of
- 10:00society in their time as well as like a villainous school
- 10:04administration. I gave pump up the volume an 8
- 10:08out of 10 when we first watched it.
- 10:10This is 1 where given how we sort of honed in on our scoring
- 10:14process later, I would probably actually rank a little bit
- 10:17higher, maybe like a nine. Oh I I didn't even remember that
- 10:20you gave it an 8. That's that's seems high for
- 10:24what I remember you saying about this movie.
- 10:26It's interesting. Like I think early on I wasn't
- 10:29certain if a 10 out of 10 movie was like, reserved for the best,
- 10:33you know? Does it have to be like Lord of
- 10:35the Rings or Citizen Kane to get out of 10 out of 10?
- 10:39Or does it just need to be the best version of itself?
- 10:41Like, there's no way Welcome home, Roxy Carmichael could be a
- 10:4510 out of 10 if the bar is that high.
- 10:47So I think over time it became more of like, is this the
- 10:50perfect version of what this movie wanted to be?
- 10:53And I think that Pump Up the Volume was a very effective
- 10:56comedy drama that is really fun to revisit as a time capsule of
- 11:00the early 90s and features some surprisingly good performances.
- 11:04I think the only things I really knocked it for were that
- 11:07Christian Slater's character as this sort of prophet of the
- 11:11people who's trying to, like, explain what's wrong with the
- 11:14world they're all in, wasn't like specific enough.
- 11:16Like, he didn't have anything really moving to say.
- 11:20But in retrospect, that's like almost the point.
- 11:22He's a child. Like, of course, he doesn't
- 11:25really have the answers to any of this.
- 11:26He's kind of putting it on the audience and his actual audience
- 11:30in the story as like, we just all need to have the
- 11:33conversation. I don't know the answers, but we
- 11:35just need to try harder. So I don't know that I feel as
- 11:38strongly about that criticism. That's why I maybe would bump it
- 11:40to like a nine. Sure.
- 11:42Yeah. And I mean, that almost sounds
- 11:43like a case where there's a difference between what, like
- 11:45the character in the context of the story is trying to say and
- 11:49what the filmmaker is trying to say, like through those
- 11:52characters, I guess. Yeah, I think I may be set too
- 11:55high of an expectation for what that movie was supposed to be
- 11:58doing, but it's just like a very fun 90s movie.
- 12:03Again, like it's fun if you're specifically trying to kind of
- 12:05submerge yourself in that atmosphere.
- 12:08Both of these movies from our first episode are just peak 90s,
- 12:10which is funny because they're turn of the decade and were
- 12:13probably produced in 1989. Yeah, yeah, that's true.
- 12:16I do wonder how many, like, I mean, you and I, especially
- 12:20growing up in the 90s, are just such a fan of this era, like
- 12:25that decade of of filmmaking. I wonder how many like big 90s
- 12:29movies fans there are, though. A lot of people have a lot of
- 12:33reference for like 80s films and 70s style filmmaking, 90s almost
- 12:40like like a forgotten decade in a way in terms of filmmaking so.
- 12:45That's that's a fairpoint. I would say that in, like the
- 12:48broad strokes of film history, you can definitely point to
- 12:51larger developments about, like, filmmaking as an art form and
- 12:55how it changed in, like, the golden age Hollywood era and
- 12:58then that 70s, like auteur period in the advent of the
- 13:01blockbuster film. And then even by the end of the
- 13:0490s, you're just starting to get into these, like, groundbreaking
- 13:07VFX movies and what that was going to mean for cinema going
- 13:10forward. But the 90s was kind of just
- 13:12like a commercial peak. You know, it's like you had a
- 13:15lot of fun movies that were sort of piggybacking off of
- 13:20innovations that have come before them.
- 13:21But yeah, I would say at that kind of high level view, there's
- 13:25not as much innovation during that time.
- 13:27But to your point, we were kids and so we just identify with it
- 13:30pretty strongly. Yeah, yeah.
- 13:31I'm just hoping there's a lot of other 90s movies fans out there
- 13:35that will appreciate. People do, like, I think a lot
- 13:37of people in America who grew up in the 90s have this like pride
- 13:40about it because pop culture was kind of booming at the time.
- 13:43In general, there was just a lot of color and imagination in a
- 13:47lot of the pop culture exports of that time that people look
- 13:49back on. It's like things were cool.
- 13:51We had Toys-R-Us and $1.00 Mcchickens.
- 13:55You know, we could do whatever we wanted.
- 13:59We've also pointed it out before and, and I think even in some of
- 14:01the movies we watched this season, like it was a common
- 14:04thing to hear in that time period in like media, like it's
- 14:07the 90s, you know, like that was such a like descriptive thing
- 14:10you could say like. You could say that up until the
- 14:132000s, when the 2000s became both the decade and the century
- 14:18and the Millennium, and it got really confusing.
- 14:20But up until that, people would. I remember a line from like an
- 14:22episode of The Simpsons where somebody's like, Marge, it's the
- 14:2590s. And I'm like, God, I want to
- 14:26bring that back because it's now we can do it.
- 14:28I'm going to be like, hey, it's the 20s.
- 14:31You know, that thing that predated one of the largest
- 14:33economic crashes. And then they cut me off and
- 14:34slammed the door again. I think that type of language,
- 14:38and this is piggybacking off something I heard from, I think
- 14:42it was Adam Conover, his podcast that I'm a fan of, but that type
- 14:47of language has been replaced by generational language.
- 14:51Like, now we talk about, you know, Boomers and Millennials
- 14:53and Gen. Z, and it's like that type of
- 14:55language has replaced the, like, sort of shared decade
- 14:58experience. I guess that's because up
- 15:02through the 90s, when the Internet was still in its
- 15:04infancy, there was more of like a monoculture in the world.
- 15:08People were more collectively shaped by things that were
- 15:11trending and popular, and that funnel of what was popular was a
- 15:15lot narrower and dictated by like what made it to the
- 15:18newspapers and what was on TV. Where is now?
- 15:22It's harder to define yourself based on that narrow of a window
- 15:25of time because like my 20 tens could be so radically different
- 15:29from someone else's that it's easier to be like, well, were
- 15:31you born around this time? Because at least if you're a
- 15:33kid, in the same span of years, you might have had more of a
- 15:36shared experience. Yeah, that.
- 15:38Yeah, exactly. And I think that's maybe why I
- 15:42guess I was such a big fan or, or, or just really am a big fan
- 15:46of films of this era. Because even if it's like, like
- 15:51all of these were like 90s movies that you and I had not
- 15:54seen before, but they still had a real sense of familiarity to
- 15:57them because of the films that were a part of that monoculture.
- 16:03You know, they felt similar to those to that shared experience
- 16:06we had with a lot of other people.
- 16:07So yeah, I, I that's like there's a weird like nostalgia
- 16:11for, for stuff you haven't even seen before.
- 16:15Yeah, that's a good way to put it.
- 16:16Like as soon as pop up, the volume starts.
- 16:18I'm like, I've never seen a frame of this movie, but it
- 16:20feels really cozy as soon as it begins, which was kind of a
- 16:24theme with a lot of what we watched.
- 16:26Which reminds me, we just did about 20 minutes on the first
- 16:29episode, and we have 11 more. So we're going to move on to our
- 16:31discussions from episode 2 of our podcast, where because we
- 16:35flip who goes 1st every time. I gave the first review.
- 16:38Frank, you asked me to watch 1998 A Simple Plan from Sam
- 16:42Raimi. This was probably our least
- 16:45jokey review we've done all season.
- 16:47It was such a like, straightforward, like, yeah,
- 16:49movie is pretty good. Here's why.
- 16:51It's not funny. Not funny, nothing funny about
- 16:54it. I think I thought it was funny
- 16:55because at one point someone gets killed with a shotgun and
- 16:58Sam Raimi made the body go like flying into the ceiling in a
- 17:00kind of like cartoonish manner. And that stood out to me because
- 17:03of how much it felt at odds with the rest of the movie.
- 17:07But overall, A Simple Plan is a very like serious kind of
- 17:11Twilight Zone esque story about a group of men, a couple of whom
- 17:17are very poor and in need of a change in their life.
- 17:19They come across a bunch of money in the woods and they end
- 17:22up spending the film trying to grapple with the moral dilemma
- 17:25of like, whose money is this? Is it safe for us to take it?
- 17:27Is it right for us to take it? And the natural consequences of
- 17:31that, which ends with several murders.
- 17:32So it's a good, solid movie. It has sort of faded from my
- 17:37memory since watching it, which is that intangible we talked
- 17:41about with the forgotten 90s films, Like why are we not still
- 17:44talking about A simple plan? And I think in this case, a lot
- 17:48of it's maybe because the film felt so strongly like a book
- 17:50adaptation. This is where we really
- 17:52solidified our time to book realization theory.
- 17:57Yeah. I don't know.
- 17:58It just, it's a great movie. I felt a little underwhelmed by
- 18:02the ending, which maybe that's another part of it too.
- 18:04If it didn't end on a strong note, it's easier to kind of
- 18:06like put it behind you. I remember you were like, my
- 18:10memory is that was one of your biggest criticisms is, is how
- 18:13the movie ended and how it kind of missed this sort of easy or
- 18:17like narratively fulfilling off ramps and just kind of went for
- 18:19something that just didn't land at all.
- 18:22It went for the simplest off ramp and then still the off ramp
- 18:26was too long. Like the movie with the ending
- 18:28it chose to go with by being a little bit more straightforward
- 18:31needed to wrap itself up sooner than it did.
- 18:33So it just kind of drags. And I think the a simple plan
- 18:36was on track to be a 10 out of 10 with our revised scoring
- 18:39system of like, is this the best movie it can be?
- 18:42And instead I dropped it down to an 8 because I was so frustrated
- 18:44by that last like 20 minutes. So, interesting point in the
- 18:49race to fall apart, but it kind of did.
- 18:52You gave both of the 1st movies I recommended to you like high
- 18:55scores. What?
- 18:56What happened? You just started.
- 18:57You got more critical after that you just started.
- 18:59What happened? What happened to you?
- 19:01You started picking the worst. Movies.
- 19:03No, these are blind pics. Yeah, well, pick blind better.
- 19:07That's the premise, Yeah. At the end of episode 2, 'cause
- 19:11we started keeping track of the total scores.
- 19:14So like the first movie, I gave yours an 8.
- 19:16The second movie I picked, I gave you an 8.
- 19:17So at that point you had a 16 out of 20, and we ended up with
- 19:20scores out of a total possible of like 120.
- 19:24And you were so far in the lead at the beginning that it was
- 19:27pretty funny that it completely flipped.
- 19:29And then right before the end we were like almost neck and neck
- 19:31again. It's a tight race.
- 19:33Yeah, yeah. So what was your what was your
- 19:36second movie? He's thinking about it.
- 19:41It was your favorite movie? The Grifters.
- 19:43Oh, the grifters. Yeah, Yeah.
- 19:48I've, I've brought this movie up throughout the entire season
- 19:50jokingly as like the low point in terms of like films.
- 19:56I I've forgotten. It was the second one of the
- 19:58season. I just did not care for this
- 20:01movie at all. It it almost, I almost have like
- 20:05a weird fondness for it now, in terms of like how much I've
- 20:08ragged on it. But it was oddly unpleasant.
- 20:11And I remember my biggest take away was just that like visually
- 20:17and tonally and in terms of the pacing, it felt like it was like
- 20:24if you took like a great crime movie, like a Scorsese type film
- 20:31and just like stripped all of the flavor and filmmaking
- 20:35expertise away and like cinematography, it just didn't
- 20:39have any of that, you know, it was just like, it just had this
- 20:43blandness to it that that made everything that was happening
- 20:46even more uncomfortable and kind of dull, kind of dull.
- 20:50It's interesting that you bring up Scorsese because I think he
- 20:53was listed as a producer, so he had some contribution to the
- 20:56film, but absolutely was not in the chair for this one.
- 20:59I think it was a Stephen Frears movie I did actually.
- 21:05So I was, I was doing some, some holiday shopping because it's in
- 21:08December still when I'm recording this.
- 21:10And I was looking at the yearly like Criterion Collection DVD
- 21:14sale because I wanted to pick up a few things.
- 21:17And I nearly as a joke, bought you the 4K Grifters Criterion
- 21:21Collection DVD because I just thought it'd be really funny.
- 21:25That's, I mean, that is funny, that's interesting that it's in
- 21:28the Criterion Collection, honestly, because I, I did have
- 21:31that movie. It is, it is.
- 21:33And I, it, it's interesting when you find yourself at sort of
- 21:37that impasse where it's a film that is very critically well
- 21:40received. And I think often times if it's
- 21:44something that's critically well received or really popular, I
- 21:47can usually understand why to an extent, but just recognize like,
- 21:52maybe this just didn't click for me.
- 21:54And I can kind of see that with grifters.
- 21:55But at the same time, I'm like, I really don't get it.
- 21:58I I don't think this is a good film like And so it, it does
- 22:03baffle me a bit that it does have such high critical acclaim.
- 22:07It is funny like the nature of our format, the idea that we
- 22:11pick a movie that we think will be good but that we can't verify
- 22:14because we haven't seen it and know as little as possible leads
- 22:17to these like weird impasses where you you can't really be
- 22:20affected by like, well, I have to say it's good because other
- 22:23people like it or vice versa. You get kind of an authentic
- 22:26experience watching the movie because you just aren't always
- 22:29certain if even it's popular or not.
- 22:31I thought Grifters would be a win because it's the person
- 22:34selecting it. I saw that it had good critical
- 22:36reviews, so it was really funny to me in recording that episode.
- 22:39How much you disliked it? Yeah, I mean that's that's part
- 22:42of the fun of the show though. Like I people talk about a lot
- 22:46the like so bad it's good movies and it it's interesting slash
- 22:52disappointing when a movie falls just short of like crossing that
- 22:58that line into being so bad it's good and winds up just being so
- 23:02bad. Like so bad, so bad.
- 23:04It stinks. It's so bad, it's it's bad.
- 23:09But yeah, I mean that's you know, like I said, that's part
- 23:11of the fun of the show. So.
- 23:13The other funny thing is that for the most part, as we
- 23:15mentioned, after recommending that the other host watch a
- 23:17movie, we often do not go back and check out the movie
- 23:19ourselves. So my entire concept of grifters
- 23:23is just what you told me in the review, and I'll probably never
- 23:26watch the movie, but I cannot ever forget talking about John
- 23:30Cusack's really low return grifs where he'd spend like 30 minutes
- 23:35and risk his life to to steal like $4 from somebody.
- 23:39Dude, it was like less than that.
- 23:40He was stealing like quarters off people.
- 23:42Like it was. It was ridiculous.
- 23:45Like, like, if that character was around right now, he'd be
- 23:48trying to take advantage of them, like taking the penny out
- 23:51of production in the US And he'd be like, how do I get
- 23:54everybody's extra pennies and I can turn them into Dimes?
- 23:57That's that's too big of a grift for him though man, that was his
- 23:59whole thing is no big grifs. No big griffs.
- 24:02He's like, I'm going to make less than minimum wage doing
- 24:05deceptive. It's like go to go get a part
- 24:07time job, Mr. Tusa. And then the the movie almost
- 24:11didn't even deliver on something.
- 24:13It was promising in a way, because a big thing in that
- 24:15movie was his girlfriend was trying to convince him to do
- 24:22like a big grift. And then the story never gets to
- 24:25that point. They get interrupted before
- 24:27then, you know, because characters start dying and
- 24:30there's only there's only three main characters.
- 24:33So like that was a whole thing for his character was like, I, I
- 24:37only do the small time stuff. I'm not going to do any big
- 24:39stuff. And like through flashbacks, you
- 24:42see the type of bigger griffs that she had done.
- 24:46But in terms of these characters like, they never get to that
- 24:49point even, which is. That's weird.
- 24:52Yeah. That makes me picture like an
- 24:54Ocean's 11 style movie where you spend the first two acts
- 24:57plotting out of heist, but then instead of doing the heist they
- 24:59just all die and it never happens.
- 25:01Yeah, yeah. Or they're just like, man, that
- 25:03that would be hard. Let's not do that like.
- 25:05Turns out bank fault, no matter how much montage editing we do,
- 25:09can't get in there. Can't get in there, can't man
- 25:11mantage our way around that one. Can't mantage our way in.
- 25:15Yeah. So Grifters is the worst.
- 25:17Surprisingly not the lowest rated movie of the year.
- 25:20You gave it at the time a three out of 10, although you did tell
- 25:23me later you wish you'd scored it lower.
- 25:26Yeah, yeah, I mean it, well, it's it's like I said that that
- 25:29I joked about this one so much because it it became like the
- 25:31basement, you know, it became like the floor in terms of
- 25:34scoring. And three felt harsh at the
- 25:37time. I mean, yeah, in hindsight,
- 25:41maybe it's a 2, like going below A2.
- 25:43We've talked about this recently too, that that would be really,
- 25:47really it would have to be a offensive, like actually
- 25:51offensive, I think to score than A2.
- 25:54Yeah, we did mention, like, if you go that low, you're so much
- 25:58more likely to come back around the other side Pac-Man style,
- 26:01and just end up at the top instead because you've made
- 26:03like, avant-garde art. Totally, Yeah, totally this.
- 26:06The so bad it's good. The so bad, it's really good,
- 26:09Yeah. Grifters decided to stay in
- 26:11Slain so bad it's bad. OK, moving from there into our
- 26:15third episode, I'll call this, for the Super fans out there,
- 26:19maybe our most underrated episode in that it is literally
- 26:23been consumed by the least people.
- 26:28Just coincidentally, just looking at our metrics, I think
- 26:30fewer people saw this one. And I think it's because I gave
- 26:32it sort of a bad title. I was still trying to figure out
- 26:35titles at this point, and I thought it would be funny to try
- 26:38to like, combine elements of both movies as if it was the
- 26:41title of one big movie. So our two films for Episode 3,
- 26:45I, in an attempt to rebound from a horrible pic with grifters,
- 26:48asked you to watch a Japanese Kaiju film called Gamera
- 26:51Guardian of the Universe. And you asked me to watch an
- 26:54ensemble cast comedy film called Soap Dish about a soap opera
- 26:59production. And so I called the episode
- 27:01something like Soap Opera Digest.
- 27:03Did like in parentheses 'cause I was like digested cause Gamera
- 27:08ate him and then after that came out I was like nobody's
- 27:10following my logic with this at all.
- 27:13I got it. I understood so.
- 27:15Frank got it. So maybe some people will get
- 27:18it. But yeah, that's my that's
- 27:20probably my worst promotional job.
- 27:21Was was that title for that third episode?
- 27:25I guess if this was the third one, then you went first with
- 27:28the reviews. So we'll Frank, we'll go
- 27:29straight in. Tell me, tell me a little bit
- 27:31about Gamera. Well, I mean spoilers for what
- 27:34you teased at the beginning. This is the movie I gave a 10
- 27:37out of 10. Heck yeah it is.
- 27:39Yeah, it was the only the only one of the season that got a
- 27:42perfect score. And I'll, I'll stand by that,
- 27:46honestly, like Gamera was just a blast and no pun intended and.
- 27:52I don't get it put it in the table.
- 27:55Because he ate them. You get it.
- 27:57Because he ate them. Play the door slam again.
- 28:01You're going to have to actually find that sound effect.
- 28:04I know I hate, I hate this bit where me in the recordings gives
- 28:07myself work to do in post production as a joke.
- 28:10Because, like, this guy's a jerk.
- 28:12This guy's the worst. I'm going to be awake at 2:00 in
- 28:13the morning the day before this is supposed to go out like door
- 28:17slam effect. What?
- 28:20But yeah, anyway, Gamera was like you said it.
- 28:26It was that example of a film that was a 10 out of 10 in what
- 28:32it was trying to be it it was sort of a peak piece of that
- 28:39genre of filmmaking of like Kaiju filmmaking.
- 28:44I don't remember that what it's called now, but I during the
- 28:47episode we talked about there's, there's sort of a broader
- 28:50umbrella term that that type of filmmaking falls under.
- 28:53Oh, is it like tokosatsu or something like that?
- 28:56Yeah, yeah. I think so that, that, that,
- 28:58that sounds right. But yeah, yeah.
- 29:01So I mean, I really had, like, almost nothing but positive
- 29:04things to say about the film, which is funny.
- 29:07I would think, like, if somebody were to watch it and be like,
- 29:11what the heck, This is their 10 out of 10 film.
- 29:14It's a guy in a costume, like running around like, you know?
- 29:18That was the whole thing we talked about was like the
- 29:20cultural context in Japan where there's been 6,000,000 Godzilla
- 29:25movies and also like the Power Rangers shows and all those.
- 29:29I mean, Super Sentai in Japan and everything else in that
- 29:31genre, there's just a general acceptance of a type of
- 29:35filmmaking where you just put a guy in a rubber suit and say
- 29:37he's Godzilla. But like everything in the movie
- 29:40was self serious and that's what allows it to still work as like
- 29:44a somewhat dramatic piece of filmmaking.
- 29:47It's like an intentional sort of contrast that if you open
- 29:51yourself up to, I think it'd be really fun.
- 29:53Yeah, and it looked great in its own way too.
- 29:56I mean, it it's it had really strong cinematography.
- 29:59Like the scenes outside of the Kaiju action looked good and and
- 30:05the Kaiju action sequences looks good too.
- 30:07I I remember praising like one shot in particular that like I
- 30:11think they achieved something visually that had like a really
- 30:14grand scale to it. And like was just a super cool
- 30:18looking shot, like something you would almost expect out of like.
- 30:20I compared it a lot to like the first Jurassic Park film because
- 30:24it came out around the same time.
- 30:26And just visually there's a huge contrast between those two.
- 30:30So yeah, I think I think it it, it almost feels like a film from
- 30:34an older era because it's using like a style of filmmaking that
- 30:39like way predates the 90s, but this was almost like the peak
- 30:43version of that because it was made in in that era.
- 30:47Which is what we kept saying about the 90s in general, is it
- 30:50felt like the culmination of a bunch of filmmaking norms that
- 30:55were about to all be disrupted. Like there was so many things
- 30:59that you would do a certain way that became immediately outmoded
- 31:02by some sort of computer effects alternative that watching
- 31:06something like Camera, I imagine still haven't seen.
- 31:08It is really rewarding for Someone Like You who he is a
- 31:11filmmaker and appreciates, like the artistry that goes into
- 31:15putting something obviously fake on top of something obviously
- 31:18real and trying to find a way to make those things blend.
- 31:21Yeah, absolutely. I that I think was a big part of
- 31:24me was just appreciating the production value and the
- 31:27production elements that went into making this movie.
- 31:30And it just felt so genuine because of that, you know, it it
- 31:35it felt like a, I don't know, like a labor of love in a way to
- 31:40to make Gamera. So yeah, I stand by that.
- 31:43That's that's a 10 out of 10 for this season.
- 31:46Gamera was was great. That that is 1.
- 31:48I would rewatch again. 10 out of 10 would watch again.
- 31:52Gamera Yeah, yeah. Exactly.
- 31:54I'll be updating this visually for those watching on the
- 31:57YouTube version as we go. I'm going to populate each film
- 32:00in the spot that it ended up in, in an actual like leaderboard of
- 32:04the top 24 forgotten 90s movies. So you'll notice the Gamera now
- 32:07holds the top spot and will for the remainder of the discussion.
- 32:10It is apparently the most underrated forgotten film of the
- 32:141990s. Yeah, it's it's almost like
- 32:17cheating because it's so hyper specific and what type of film
- 32:20that it is. But yeah, I just like no notes,
- 32:25no notes for Gamera. I can't.
- 32:26No notes. It was a short that was also our
- 32:28shortest episode, and I think part of it was for that reason.
- 32:30Gamera really was like, what all do you need me to say if the
- 32:34movie's this good? So that was Gamera.
- 32:38My film, as I mentioned briefly, was 1991's Soap Dish, which was
- 32:42something I've never heard of. I'd spent so many weeks at this
- 32:45point looking up 90s movies to, like, pitch for the show.
- 32:48Never saw anybody talk about Soap Dish.
- 32:50Really, really odd relic of that time because it's an ensemble
- 32:54cast with a lot of recognizable names, some of whom are, like,
- 32:59edited out of the movie and barely appear, others of whom
- 33:02give like, weirdly uninspired performances.
- 33:05And ultimately, the movie itself just feels like the people
- 33:08making it gave up on it. Like while making it.
- 33:10It's a comedy that's not funny. And what else do you need to
- 33:14say? Yeah, this, this is the one that
- 33:17I that I think I have forgotten the most about out of all the
- 33:21ones we've talked about. I guess like I don't, I remember
- 33:25you really didn't like it so. It's visually impressive at
- 33:29times. The whole thing is like a satire
- 33:33about the people producing a popular daytime soap opera and
- 33:36how their lives as characters become as overtly dramatic and
- 33:40silly as those of their soap opera character counterparts.
- 33:44And you do get some good performances in there too, like
- 33:47Kevin Klein's in it and he gives a really strong comedic
- 33:50performance. Like probably the only person in
- 33:52the movie to do anything genuinely laugh out loud funny.
- 33:54But everything else is so plotting and uninteresting, and
- 33:59the movie tries to take you on twists and turns, but just the
- 34:02final product doesn't feel like it was made by people who have
- 34:05an affinity for soaps, which I think would have made all the
- 34:08difference. It felt like the funny idea that
- 34:12they handed to somebody who didn't know enough to make
- 34:15authentic in any way. So it just kind of goes in one
- 34:18ear and out the other. And I think I even knocked an
- 34:20extra point off because I gave it a three out of 10.
- 34:22I knocked an extra point off for having like a trans panic
- 34:24ending, which as we talked about in that episode, was somewhat
- 34:27common in the 90s. Yeah, I, I think that was the
- 34:31reason I picked it was because I thought it was a funny sort of
- 34:34like sandbox to play in, in terms of like you can do a lot
- 34:37of entertaining things I would think about like a behind the
- 34:40scenes of a soap opera. But if you sort of have a
- 34:45reverence in a way for that genre of television which is so
- 34:49unique in its own way, like so, it feels like almost spiteful or
- 34:55hateful in a way the way that they handled it.
- 34:58It did not read as fun or it would like.
- 35:00It was like the people making it had fun talking about soaps.
- 35:04Like I think it was a great pick on your end as a blind
- 35:06recommendation because I, well, I've not, I've not worked in
- 35:10television, but I have worked in live event production for many
- 35:15years. I did that for a living.
- 35:17And there's so much like interesting, unique stuff about
- 35:20that kind of job, like the weird, fast-paced, so many
- 35:24moving pieces kind of roll where you're always on your feet and
- 35:27things are always going wrong and you're trying to fix them in
- 35:28real time. Those things can be so
- 35:30interesting, but this movie found a way to make them
- 35:34visually compelling but not interesting on the page.
- 35:37So Soapdish. Big disappointment.
- 35:39I gave it a three out of 10, which ended up leaving it in the
- 35:41same tier as the Grifters, but having only seen one, I don't
- 35:45know which one's actually worst. Yeah, and we're not going to
- 35:48find out because I don't think either of us want to rewatch
- 35:50either of those movies. No, that would be yeah, if we
- 35:53get to 1000 views, we'll watch The Grifters again.
- 35:58Now with that, we'll go on to episode 4 for Meet Your Double
- 36:01Feature, which I'll be honest, this is the first one we made
- 36:04that I thought like, this is our show.
- 36:07I felt like production wise, conversation wise, we really hit
- 36:11something with this one and I'm going to guess it's because we
- 36:13both picked silly action movies. Which is very much in our
- 36:17wheelhouse of films we appreciate.
- 36:19It's exactly what I think we both assumed we would be talking
- 36:22about when we pitched this as a premise because growing up,
- 36:25there was never an action movie we would pass up from that time
- 36:28period. You could just be like, hey, I
- 36:29got this goofy one. It's probably awful.
- 36:31We want to watch it anyway. And we'd be like, of course I
- 36:33do. And so, well, I was.
- 36:36Sorry, just to interject real quick.
- 36:37It was also the era of the action star, which I don't think
- 36:42exists in the same way now. Like even looking at the the
- 36:46leads of these two movies, we picked, you know, John Claude
- 36:48Van Damme and Kurt Russell. And I mean, you look at just the
- 36:54entire cast of like The Expendables films.
- 36:56And it was just like all of those guys were in multiple
- 37:00action franchise films and so many of them definitely bleed
- 37:05over from the 80s, but all the way throughout the 90s as well.
- 37:09Yes, they mostly inhabited those two.
- 37:11You did have some who came into their own more in the 90s, like
- 37:14Jean-Claude Van Damme, because that was my movie was Double
- 37:17Impact. His breakout role was
- 37:19Bloodsport, which was in the late 80s, but like the rest of
- 37:22his career peak was all in the 90s.
- 37:24So he came about later than like a Sylvester Stallone or a
- 37:27Schwarzenegger. But gosh, Double Impact is a
- 37:30weird one. I ended up giving it kind of a
- 37:33bad review. I gave it a four out of 10
- 37:35because it takes all of the things that should work for a
- 37:38Jean-Claude Van Damme the goofball action movie and just
- 37:42doesn't let them shine. I mean, he plays, he's supposed
- 37:45to play 2 characters even though he's not at this stage of his
- 37:48career, a very good actor that should be funny.
- 37:50Like we should have had like 2 really over the top performances
- 37:53just to make sure they felt different.
- 37:55And instead we get like, you know, Jean-Claude Van Damme and
- 37:58Jean-Claude Van Damme, but with his hair a different way.
- 38:02Yeah, yeah, this one, I didn't remember you scored this one a
- 38:08four out of 10 because I just remember having us having a
- 38:12really fun discussion about this movie.
- 38:14We got into a lot of a lot of bits about the 2 Jean Claude's
- 38:18and about their, like, differing lifestyle and how it ended with
- 38:21us trying to explain how one of them was going to get cancelled
- 38:25for being a homophobe because one of them is a homophobe in
- 38:27the movie and how it would affect his standing socially in
- 38:30a crime syndicate. Yeah.
- 38:31Oh yeah. Cancelled from the crime
- 38:33syndicate specifically. Like, that was the one thing
- 38:35they didn't stand for. Yeah.
- 38:38That's it. I double impact it.
- 38:40It didn't have enough martial arts, which was also a big like
- 38:43knock. Some of Jean Claude's movies
- 38:45from that time he seemingly tried to push more into like,
- 38:47I'm not just a karate guy. I'm just like a gun toting
- 38:50action star like a lot of my peers and he's like good enough
- 38:54at that, but it just always feels like an incomplete movie
- 38:56of his when it doesn't feature more interesting martial arts
- 39:00choreography on top of it. Well, I think that's also an
- 39:02interesting thing about this being the era of the action
- 39:05star, is that they were all, in a way, in competition with one
- 39:09another to an extent. Especially there was like a
- 39:13famous feud between Jean Claude and oh gosh, what's his name?
- 39:19Steven Seagal. Steven Seagal.
- 39:21Thank you. Yeah.
- 39:23And I think that probably, like directly affected the films that
- 39:28they made. Sometimes I remember, I don't
- 39:30remember exactly what movie it was, but there was like Arnold
- 39:33and and Stallone was like probably the the top feud of the
- 39:38era. That was your main event, you
- 39:40know, your world championship bouts.
- 39:42Totally, totally. And I remember there was like,
- 39:45I, I, I don't remember the, the details exactly, but like one of
- 39:48them like tricked the other into taking a role because like he
- 39:53made, I think it was like Stallone made Schwarzenegger
- 39:57think he was interested in the role even though it was like a
- 39:59dumb movie. And then Schwarzenegger took it
- 40:01just so that Stallone wouldn't have it.
- 40:03But like Stallone had like tricked him because he thought
- 40:05it was stupid in the 1st place like.
- 40:07Oh, yeah, I think it was the reverse.
- 40:09I think. Oh, OK, Stallone got tricked
- 40:12into appearing in a movie called Stop or My Mom Will Shoot, which
- 40:16was this, like, horrendous police action comedy movie that
- 40:21nobody liked. And it was exactly what you
- 40:22said. Schwarzenegger tricked him into
- 40:25taking it by acting like he was really gunning for the role.
- 40:27And Stallone was like, ah, I got one over on you.
- 40:28And then he was just in like a total flop movie, which is so
- 40:31funny because on paper, it's like, ah, it's just one movie.
- 40:34You make a lot. But it's like, you imagine
- 40:35having to go to work every day for months to shoot this stupid
- 40:39movie. Like, how far into production
- 40:41before Stallone do you think was like, wait a minute.
- 40:45Oh yeah. Well, it happens.
- 40:46I mean, you talked about that recently on the Our Pirate
- 40:50episode with I'm blanking on. That Rhode Island?
- 40:54Yes, and how she didn't want to be in that movie seemingly.
- 40:58And like, like you said, like production, you're there 12
- 41:02hours a day, like you got to show up.
- 41:04And if it's something that you really hate, like, I'd be
- 41:09interested to see that Stallone movie and see what kind of
- 41:12performance he gives. It is funny, yeah.
- 41:16Because you have to tap into real emotion to be an actor,
- 41:19even a action movie hero, you have to tap into some kind of
- 41:23emotion. And if you're feeling a really
- 41:25strong real emotion, sometimes that does come through on
- 41:28screen. So in that case, that might be
- 41:31funny to rewatch at some point for the sake of double impact.
- 41:35It's not like a terrible movie, but it is just the least
- 41:40interesting Jean Claude movie from that period that I've
- 41:42personally seen. There's nothing like terrible
- 41:45about it. It's certainly a step above
- 41:47something like Soap Dish or Grifters, but it's just like,
- 41:50watch anything else that he's made, you know?
- 41:53He makes entertaining films like This Is Not To Yeah, like I I've
- 41:57enjoyed quite a few Jean-Claude Van Damme films.
- 42:00I think they're fun in a very campy way usually.
- 42:03Go watch Lionheart. Lionheart's an underrated one.
- 42:06It's not Blood Sport, which is the obvious pick, but it's like
- 42:08a really solid movie that he stars in.
- 42:11Yeah, Lionheart's awesome. Yeah, I I think you actually
- 42:13recommended that one to me a while ago and and I checked it
- 42:15out and really enjoyed it. Lionheart's good.
- 42:17Also a 90s movie, so that was double impact.
- 42:19I asked you to watch a Kurt Russell sci-fi movie, and this
- 42:22was a funny one because we've talked a lot about how like the
- 42:25difference between popular critical consensus and our own
- 42:29feelings. And I knew going in that this
- 42:31movie had really bad reviews, like in some places it was below
- 42:3520% average score. But I was like, Nah, Frank's
- 42:39going to like it. It's got his favorite actor,
- 42:41Kurt Russell. It's made by the guy who
- 42:44directed all those Resident Evil movies that he's always trying
- 42:46to get me to watch. It's going to be a perfect
- 42:48storm. And it was, I mean like this,
- 42:53Yeah, this is, I guess the opposite of Grifters, where I I
- 42:57disagree with the reviews, but in the opposite direction.
- 43:00I I think this movie is awesome. I remind me, what did I score
- 43:04this one? You gave soldier A6 out of 10,
- 43:07but it was like in a, it was an affectionate 6.
- 43:09You were like, you know what? This movie does not have a lot
- 43:11going on, but it's perfectly watchable.
- 43:14And I do think that for either one of us, anything above A5
- 43:17means the movies like good enough.
- 43:19Like I, I don't, I wouldn't steer clear of a movie because
- 43:22one of us gave it a six. Usually that just means like,
- 43:24yeah, it's OK. Totally.
- 43:25And and this is 1 where I think as I've gotten farther away from
- 43:28it, I would have scored this higher.
- 43:31I think Soldier is interesting. Favorite movies that we watched
- 43:35this season it. Was a funny conversation too,
- 43:37though. We really got into the weeds
- 43:39with Soldier because of the nameless, emotionless guys who
- 43:43at one point I genuinely thought were trying to tell me that all
- 43:47of them had been named Todd, just with different members.
- 43:50At the end, I thought it was like Todd 117, Todd 118.
- 43:53And that just created a glimmer for me of like, that's so funny,
- 43:57I can only imagine. And then you're like, no,
- 43:58they're not all named Todd. But I wouldn't let that go for
- 44:01the rest of the review. Well, that's the thing about the
- 44:03movie though, man, it just had so much uniqueness to it, which
- 44:06is always like something I'm going to appreciate.
- 44:09You know it it I enjoyed it even more when I looked into like the
- 44:13behind the scenes elements and sort of like the the story of
- 44:17the production itself and how it very directly connected to Blade
- 44:24Runner, which is one of my favorite films like.
- 44:28Like literally in the same fictional universe as Blade
- 44:31Runner. Yeah, it was the same writer.
- 44:32He was writing them like at the same time and he like
- 44:35intentionally made connections between the two.
- 44:37So this one is like a cult classic type film that I think
- 44:43really deserves that recognition because I think it defies those
- 44:51bad ratings that it got upon release.
- 44:53Like I, I really think that those are unfair.
- 44:57And I talked about it a bit in the review.
- 44:58It it did like there were some things story to the production
- 45:03that did affect the the final outcome of the film because they
- 45:06had sets that they had built and wanted to do visually.
- 45:11Like the backgrounds were all going to be practical.
- 45:14But I believe it was like a tornado or a hurricane like
- 45:18destroyed the sets that they were building.
- 45:21And so they had to like green screen a lot of like the larger
- 45:25landscapes, which obviously is going to hurt it visually,
- 45:28especially when they had a much more grandiose vision for how
- 45:31they wanted the film to look, which that would have been
- 45:34really cool to see. But, you know, that's just like
- 45:36the way filmmaking goes. You got to roll with the
- 45:38punches, basically, yeah. So much of the time a movie that
- 45:42doesn't turn out well is because people did not have the means or
- 45:46the time to make what they originally intended.
- 45:50I mean that makes me think back to like when Peter Jackson had
- 45:53to take over The Hobbit movies on absolutely zero notice and
- 45:57had almost no time for pre production and and and was
- 45:59basically taking over in the middle of Guillermo del Toro's
- 46:02pre production. So you ended up with those
- 46:03Hobbit movies that everybody hated because they were like,
- 46:06giant, bloated CGI messes. And it's like, yeah, if you'd
- 46:08given the director the proper amount of time to make another
- 46:12trilogy, it would probably look a lot better.
- 46:14And same with this. Like the original intention was
- 46:17they were aiming high and then they just kind of had to salvage
- 46:20it as they went along. Yeah, there's a great quote,
- 46:22which I'll paraphrase because I don't remember it exactly, but
- 46:25it's from George Lucas actually. And, you know, he said, like,
- 46:30it's not about like how great a filmmaker you are, it's how
- 46:33adaptive A filmmaker you are because there's always going to
- 46:37be those, those hurdles. And he's like, you can't put
- 46:40like a like a prompt at the beginning of the movie saying
- 46:43like, oh, well, this didn't work out because the actor was sick
- 46:45that day or yadda, yadda, yadda. You just have to show them the
- 46:48final product and and. Then he said jar jar is the key.
- 46:53Yeah, yeah. Also on top of that, those are
- 46:58my two things I have to say. This, this is these are the two
- 47:01things I want people to Remember Me for.
- 47:05So, yeah, Soldier, like I said, one of my favorite movies that
- 47:09I, I watched this season and I to me feels higher than a six.
- 47:12So in retrospect this is 1 I would have scored higher.
- 47:16Makes sense. OK, moving into episode 5, this
- 47:20is a weird one for Speaking of production issues.
- 47:23Jeez, we almost lost this episode completely.
- 47:26Like we almost had to skip it, which in a normal movie review
- 47:30podcast would be like such a non issue.
- 47:32But we of course had to create continuity between episodes
- 47:35where we announce which movies we're talking about at the end
- 47:38of 1 episode to queue up the next one.
- 47:40And we just had so many problems where we were recording the
- 47:45episode and we talked about Deep Cover, which was your movie.
- 47:49That recording went fine, except we found out later your
- 47:52microphone, like the wrong microphone was being picked up.
- 47:55So your audio sounded way too quiet.
- 47:56And I had to like, really crank it up and post.
- 47:59And then my review just got corrupted and we lost it
- 48:02completely. Oh yeah, that's right.
- 48:04So so audiences have never heard the original review that we did
- 48:08for your film. Yes, which is pretty funny too,
- 48:11because going into this episode, we were finishing up episode 4.
- 48:15You had forgotten to pick a movie for me to watch for next
- 48:17time. And you just came in all
- 48:19sheepishly and were like, you want to watch a Woody Allen
- 48:22musical? And I was like, oh cool, what a
- 48:25great idea. I did.
- 48:28I did have to watch a stupid Woody Allen musical.
- 48:30And then we talked about it for an hour and a half, but my
- 48:34computer was like overheating or something.
- 48:36So the audio was captured, but it was garbled beyond
- 48:39recognition. I spent days trying to salvage
- 48:42it through like an AI editor that would remove these like
- 48:47layers of sound that were messing it up, which I honestly
- 48:50regret because I, I, I try to avoid using AI tools for
- 48:54anything in this production because they're just worthless
- 48:57and they use up so much energy. But I tried to salvage that
- 49:00because I was like, well, people need to hear it.
- 49:02And then instead we just recorded like a brief summary
- 49:05that was like a 15 minute conversation, which of all the
- 49:08movies to lose, I'm not even mad that we lost that Woody Allen
- 49:10one. That movie sucked.
- 49:12Yeah, that's, I mean, that one, we talked about this at the
- 49:17time, but neither of us just more so coincidentally than
- 49:20anything else. I've really seen any Woody Allen
- 49:23films and he's a very influential filmmaker of that
- 49:30era, but a problematic one as well.
- 49:33I. Mean if you if you Google Woody
- 49:34Allen's name today, it's probably going to auto fill with
- 49:38like Woody Allen, Epstein Island.
- 49:40So it's like, of course we don't want to.
- 49:42Of course we don't want to celebrate them right now.
- 49:46But yeah, Frank, you're right that like in the 70s and 80s, it
- 49:50was like he was making tons of extremely well regarded films
- 49:55that we just happened to have not seen even before all of that
- 49:58came out. And then coincidentally, the one
- 50:00you selected for me to watch was just like awful.
- 50:03It was his attempt at a musical where he deliberately hired
- 50:07people who couldn't sing or, like, instructed them not to
- 50:10sing correctly on purpose because he thought that was,
- 50:13like, cute. And it just makes the movie so
- 50:17painful to watch that by the time it was over, I was like,
- 50:20why have you done this to me? Well, and it was also the type
- 50:23of musical where it wasn't original songs either, which I
- 50:26don't know if there's a specific name for that type of musical,
- 50:28but there are ones that are good that have done that, but they
- 50:33were just using existing songs and singing like really bad
- 50:37covers of them essentially. It was pointless.
- 50:40The movie as an exercise was pointless, and Woody Allen's
- 50:43character in it was creepy. And Woody Allen the man is
- 50:46creepy. Surprisingly, I gave it a three.
- 50:50Like this was in that category where I think any impulse to
- 50:55rank it lower would have been unfair because it's like, well,
- 50:56the movie didn't do these things Woody Allen allegedly did.
- 51:00But I still just hated watching it so much that I was like,
- 51:03whatever, this is boring. A couple of the songs were fun
- 51:07because Woody Allen and his team didn't write them and they were
- 51:09just real pieces of music. But yeah, very boring.
- 51:12I guess we skipped over deep cover.
- 51:15You kind of liked deep Cover as I recall.
- 51:17Deep and deep cover is actually another one that I would put in
- 51:20the same campus soldier that the further I've gotten away from
- 51:24it, the more I appreciate it. And, and I think even over the
- 51:26course of the review about like talking through the movie, I was
- 51:30like, you know, actually I really like to cover it was it
- 51:33was good. Which is funny because I think
- 51:35eventually you scored it a 5 out of 10.
- 51:37And that's probably because when I started watching it, I like
- 51:41the first act of the movie. And this is maybe more on me
- 51:45than the movie, honestly. Like it just wasn't clicking
- 51:48with me and it was like sort of a dark subject matter.
- 51:53And so like early on I had the same thought.
- 51:55I was like, why does it keep doing this to me?
- 51:56Why does it keep picking these? Depressing.
- 52:00Like, yeah, like, I don't want to watch these depressing crime
- 52:04movies, but Deep Cover had something to say.
- 52:08It was so stylistic. It was the IT was the exact
- 52:10opposite of grifters in in the sense that it was so stylistic.
- 52:14I mean, you can even tell just looking at like the cover art
- 52:17for the film, like the poster, its use of like colour
- 52:22throughout the film and the lighting and the performances,
- 52:25everything about it just just sort of like dripping with like
- 52:28style. But it just had an oddness to it
- 52:31that like, and the uniqueness that I appreciated by the end of
- 52:36the film, but took me a while to get into.
- 52:38So that's why I think it it sort of landed in like a middle
- 52:41ground score for me at the time. But retrospectively, I'm like,
- 52:45no deep cover. That's good film making.
- 52:48It's unique, it's entertaining in its own way.
- 52:53You had very charismatic leads and performances from, you know,
- 52:59Laurence Fishburne and Jeff Goldblum.
- 53:03So this also, I would I would score higher.
- 53:06Now, the cover, Yeah. Like, of everything we've talked
- 53:11about so far, Gamera, again, always kind of being an outlier
- 53:14because that's so hyper specific.
- 53:15But like these other ones is just sort of being just general
- 53:18films. Yeah, Soldier and Deep Cover
- 53:21were were two of my favorites I think.
- 53:24Yeah, I mean, we did also, again, the movies that I don't
- 53:27watch but that I recommend my opinion is basically like, how
- 53:30fun were they to talk about? And we definitely were on a kick
- 53:33talking about that detail where his Lawrence Fishman's character
- 53:37had never had alcohol before because he was afraid about
- 53:39becoming an addict like his dad. But then he just, like you tried
- 53:42to summarize it. It's like he tried alcohol and
- 53:45it's pretty good. I just thought that's a.
- 53:47Line in the movie that is not that's literally he's like
- 53:51there's a scene where he's like, he's like drinking and one of
- 53:55the other characters who knows he doesn't drink.
- 53:57He was like, you're drinking now or something.
- 53:58He's like, yeah, I tried it's pretty good.
- 54:00And then he just like gets in a car and drives away.
- 54:02It's like when. He could we we really latched on
- 54:05to that as like Larry Fishburne alcohol.
- 54:08Good question, mark. Yeah.
- 54:09Oh, he is credited as Larry Fishburne, too.
- 54:11That's another sort of fun little tidbit about that movie.
- 54:15Yeah, there was a lot of unintentionally funny stuff too
- 54:18in that one, because it was so hyper serious.
- 54:21But then some stuff. There's also that.
- 54:22Side character who kept talking about Terminator 2 like.
- 54:25Right. So weird.
- 54:27It's that kind of stuff where you get into just like what was
- 54:32who. What talk to a film making right
- 54:36exactly? I don't understand the
- 54:38motivation. I can't imagine anybody else
- 54:40would have done this. Yeah, yeah, totally.
- 54:44So, yeah, deep cover. Good.
- 54:47Question mark, deep cover. Good.
- 54:50Pretty alcohol confirmed Deep cover equals alcohol.
- 54:54Yeah, well, we'll find out. So I'm glad that that episode
- 54:57still exists and is now in a very easy to listen to state
- 55:00because I did not try to include my AI recovered audio of us
- 55:05talking about Woody Allen. It sounded like sound wave from
- 55:07Transformers, like that entire half would have been so
- 55:10distorted and bad. I'm glad I did not do that.
- 55:14Anyway, 6 out or 6 out of 10 episode. 6 out of 12 for season
- 55:191. Another good one, one that I
- 55:21look back on pretty fondly. I think I went first for this
- 55:25one because I I ended the previous episode talking about
- 55:28Woody Allen. Frank, you asked me to watch
- 55:301997's Jackal, which is or The Jackal, which was a weird one
- 55:36because it was a remake of a much more popular and well liked
- 55:39film from the 70s That changed so much about that movie and its
- 55:44source material novel that all of the people involved in the
- 55:47earlier productions like begged them to change the title of this
- 55:50one. They were like, you're not
- 55:51making the Jackal, you're making something else.
- 55:54Don't call it the Jackal. And then whoever was making it
- 55:57was like, you know what? I'm going to call it the Jackal.
- 55:59Even harder, I mean. Did we ever get to the bottom of
- 56:05why, just because it was such a different narrative that they
- 56:09were opposed to it or like. It's a completely different
- 56:11story. They change all of the
- 56:12locations. The only elements that are the
- 56:14same across all versions are. The story follows a professional
- 56:19assassin traveling to a different country to arrange a
- 56:22very high profile murder against like a public individual.
- 56:26And the story follows that person's meticulous preparation
- 56:30while also cutting to the law enforcement group trying to
- 56:34track them down. So it's sort of like an evenly
- 56:36balanced story, giving you the hero and the villains
- 56:39perspective at the same time. And this one just centered
- 56:44everything in America and made it about like the Russian mafia
- 56:48in the fall of the USSR, like the wake of all of that.
- 56:52It was a weird pivot that tried to introduce a bunch of 90
- 56:55specific tech gadgets and stuff too.
- 56:58And as I talked about at the time, it's the perfect 5 out of
- 57:0210 movie, which is what I gave it 5 out of 10 because it just
- 57:05doesn't do enough wrong to make you turn the movie off.
- 57:07But it stays so close to that point for its entire runtime.
- 57:11Yeah, yeah. This one, just even thinking
- 57:14back on it falls into a pretty like nebulous area for me where
- 57:18some of these it's interesting, like when you're describing the
- 57:21film to me, I can get sort of a visual for it in my head, you
- 57:25know, in terms of like what what type of movie it would be.
- 57:28And I think I have that for the Jackal, but it also just feels
- 57:31like nothing at the same time. The Jackal.
- 57:33Yeah, it's it is nothing. It's a very like impermanent
- 57:37feeling, watching the movie where you're like, sometimes if
- 57:40you don't pay close attention to something, you walk away feeling
- 57:43like you only have a vague sense of what was happening.
- 57:45You could put your full attention on the Jackal and
- 57:47still feel that way when it's over because it just isn't
- 57:51There's, it's so shallow. It's a very shallow story that
- 57:53is told relatively effectively but has nothing to say.
- 57:57So at the end, you're like, I I guess that was a movie.
- 57:59I think Bruce Willis was there. I I think he gave a pretty
- 58:03sleepy performance too from what I remember you saying.
- 58:06Super sleepy, your two leads. We had Bruce Willis hanging out
- 58:09by himself doing a really boring quiet man performance and then
- 58:12we had Richard Gere doing an Irish accent that he couldn't
- 58:15land. So both of our leads were kind
- 58:18of messing things up. It just, I don't know, maybe my
- 58:22opinion of this is actually worsened.
- 58:23At the time I was like super take it or leave it.
- 58:26I had no qualms about watching it.
- 58:28But with a couple of months removed I'm like chackle.
- 58:31I don't think I'd ever tell anybody to watch it now.
- 58:37All. Right over to you episode 6.
- 58:43I asked you to watch Doc Hollywood from 1991, which as I
- 58:47recall, I think I picked it out because it has Michael J Fox in
- 58:50it in one of his like lead film roles post Back to the Future.
- 58:55Obviously his career in Hollywood was very adversely
- 58:58affected by his Parkinson's, so he like dropped out of the
- 59:01public eye for a time. And I just thought this was
- 59:03interesting. This was like later stage
- 59:05Michael J Fox in something that probably not a lot of people
- 59:08remember. Yeah.
- 59:09And and that was my biggest praise that I had for the film
- 59:12was Michael J Fox. He like, I mean, even thinking
- 59:16back on it now, it's a pretty mediocre film in a lot of ways,
- 59:20but he elevates it so much. And that's an interesting thing
- 59:27when like a film relies so heavily on a single performance.
- 59:34Like something like Pirates of the Caribbean comes to mind,
- 59:36where it's like Johnny Depp's performance as Jack Sparrow
- 59:40completely steals the show in that movie.
- 59:42But it's a solid movie otherwise.
- 59:45You know, everything else going on that is is great.
- 59:48This movie is not bad in any way.
- 59:50It's just lands in a very mediocre area in most other
- 59:54aspects except for Michael J Fox.
- 59:57He's just amazing. And it's a comedy like it's,
- 1:00:01it's a very like family friendly comedy, but he's so funny and
- 1:00:07like he, he has a great ability to switch between being.
- 1:00:12Comedic and serious and just whatever like the narrative
- 1:00:16calls for. He he can sort of switch
- 1:00:18seamlessly between those things. Yeah.
- 1:00:20And so I appreciate it a lot for that.
- 1:00:23And especially the like you said, it's a, it's a movie of
- 1:00:25his that maybe not a lot of people have seen so.
- 1:00:28If you check out our review, you'll hear a lot of that, a lot
- 1:00:32of Frank talking up what a good performer Michael J Fox is, but
- 1:00:34then also a lot of short shaming.
- 1:00:36As I recall, really, really leading into short King Michael
- 1:00:40J Fox jokes in what I think was a pretty tasteless display on
- 1:00:45the. No, no, no, no, no, no.
- 1:00:47You know, I, I think he, I, I think the point I was getting at
- 1:00:51is that he owns it in a way that I, you know, I compared him to
- 1:00:55like a Tom Cruise, for example. Who?
- 1:00:58Who? I don't even know if this is
- 1:01:00this. This may be a totally
- 1:01:01unsubstantiated claim, but I've heard there's a lot of camera
- 1:01:04trickery to make him appear taller than he actually is in a
- 1:01:07lot of his films, and they don't do that with Michael J Fox.
- 1:01:11He stands on business as a short king.
- 1:01:13And he's on business and sometimes in milk crate.
- 1:01:16He doesn't though. That's the thing he does.
- 1:01:19Not sorry. We're better than.
- 1:01:21This yes, they they tilt down the camera.
- 1:01:29Yeah, which which fun fact, this is just pet peeve of mine.
- 1:01:31I hear everybody do it, even people that work in filmmaking.
- 1:01:34You don't pan up and down. You pan left and right and you
- 1:01:37tilt up and down. So if the camera goes in a
- 1:01:42vertical direction, that's a camera tilt.
- 1:01:45And if it goes left, left to right, that's a camera pan.
- 1:01:50What's a Dutch angle anyway? No, absolutely that is correct.
- 1:01:58I passed a film vocabulary test one time by getting that
- 1:02:01correct. I recall how that works.
- 1:02:03A film vocabulary? What do you mean?
- 1:02:04What was that for? I took film studies courses in
- 1:02:07college. I didn't, I didn't get a full
- 1:02:08blown film degree like you did, but for some reason in one of my
- 1:02:12classes, it was like a third level course.
- 1:02:14They gave us like a child's vocabulary test where you just
- 1:02:17had to match words to definitions.
- 1:02:18And it was just about like, film terminology.
- 1:02:21And people like, failed it. And I just was like, what?
- 1:02:25What is the most basic stuff like that was in there?
- 1:02:29It's like pan versus tilt. What is a jib shot?
- 1:02:33Who's Michael J Fox? Yeah, yeah.
- 1:02:38Well, I mean, OK, so you know, I mean, I mess it up too.
- 1:02:40It's a very common. It's it's just like the way
- 1:02:43people naturally speak. No, absolutely, because
- 1:02:46ultimately it's not. It's not something that getting
- 1:02:48wrong will actually confuse anybody because, but it's just
- 1:02:51like technically actually. Actually, yeah, yeah.
- 1:02:56So just to be annoying, I thought I'd throw that there in
- 1:02:58the TN. Annoying.
- 1:02:59Yeah. Just to distract from all of my
- 1:03:01short shaming, I thought. Yeah.
- 1:03:02Yeah, exactly that. That too.
- 1:03:05All right. Well, that is our recap of the
- 1:03:07first half of Season 1. That's six episodes and six more
- 1:03:10to go. So we're going to head into our
- 1:03:12intermission now, and then when we return, we will recap the
- 1:03:15second-half of our movie review adventures.
- 1:03:17So we'll be right back. OK, coming back for the
- 1:03:28second-half of our Season 1 recap here on Meet Your Double
- 1:03:31feature Frank Episode 7, the beginning of our second-half,
- 1:03:35possibly my favorite episode of Season 1.
- 1:03:38Would you agree? Yeah, definitely.
- 1:03:40I like this. This is the episode.
- 1:03:42Someone asked me recently like to send them an episode to just
- 1:03:47jump in with and I think this is the one I would recommend to
- 1:03:51most people if you just want to get an idea of what the show is,
- 1:03:54and I think it's one of our most entertaining ones.
- 1:03:57It just it contains multitudes. First off, the movie I asked you
- 1:04:00to watch, shoot, Fight or fight to the death is AB movie,
- 1:04:04martial arts action flick starring one of the guys from
- 1:04:09Bloodsport and two of the guys from Karate Kid.
- 1:04:11So like, such a goofy film. And then the movie you asked me
- 1:04:14to watch was like an auteur art film from Long Core.
- 1:04:19Yi just was like, that can't be this episode.
- 1:04:23Who wants to hear about both of those things in that order?
- 1:04:27I do me. And we did.
- 1:04:31And not only that, even just that initial discrepancy aside,
- 1:04:34you, through no fault of your own, watched the wrong movie.
- 1:04:39Yeah, thank you for pointing out it was through no fault of my
- 1:04:41own. It was a comedy of errors that
- 1:04:45led to me watching two shoot fighter movies for that review,
- 1:04:49and the the one that I watched first was way worse than the
- 1:04:55original 1, so I'm very glad that that was not the one we
- 1:04:58wound up talking about for most of the episode.
- 1:05:01Because it was what it was like. The streaming service that you
- 1:05:04watched it on said it was called Shoot Fighter One.
- 1:05:07Even when the movie began the like sub menu called it Shoot
- 1:05:09Fighter One. But then the movie, which
- 1:05:11doesn't reveal its title card until it's over, was Shoot
- 1:05:14Fighter 2. Yeah, no, it was like I like, I
- 1:05:17Googled it. It was like typed in the full
- 1:05:20title of the original film and maybe like streaming afterwards.
- 1:05:24And then I clicked the first link.
- 1:05:25It was on one of those, like, free with ads services.
- 1:05:29And yeah, like, it labeled it as that original title.
- 1:05:33And it wasn't until the very end of the film that I realized that
- 1:05:36that was not the movie that I had been watching the entire
- 1:05:38time. Crazy, crazy stroke of luck to
- 1:05:41have that happen in this context that it was like captured on the
- 1:05:44show. Yeah, I wound up watching them
- 1:05:46back-to-back. I I needed like extra time to go
- 1:05:49back and watch the original film.
- 1:05:51So you. Texted me and you're like hey
- 1:05:53can we record tomorrow instead? And I was like sure thing,
- 1:05:55whatever. And then I found out later that
- 1:05:56that that's the reason why. Yeah, yeah.
- 1:06:00So that that's a fun. I specifically revealed it that
- 1:06:03way in the recording of the episode too.
- 1:06:05So I think that that's that's fun, super funny.
- 1:06:09Do you want me to talk about you fighter?
- 1:06:10Because. Yeah, I mean, do you like shoot
- 1:06:12fighter one quite a bit? Yeah, I think I I think I gave
- 1:06:15this movie a nine out of 10, which you did Crazy cuckoo
- 1:06:19bananas. It's so much fun though.
- 1:06:25Like I loved it. Like honestly, both these
- 1:06:28movies, like you said, like who wants both of these things?
- 1:06:30Like this is like inside you there are two wolves like.
- 1:06:37Yeah, 1 is very Moody and the other one wants to kick that.
- 1:06:40Like it's just like, this is like the 2 ends of the spectrum
- 1:06:44of like my film interests, you know, just give me that really
- 1:06:47campy, fun, silly martial arts movie and then give me something
- 1:06:53that's just like deep and weird and like emotional and sad like,
- 1:06:59and like visually compelling. Like these are very different
- 1:07:03types of films. Because the one I watched was
- 1:07:07Fallen Angels from 1995. The Wonk Are Why film, which
- 1:07:11other films of his are maybe more recognizable to people?
- 1:07:14He he directed In the Mood for Love, which I think got like an
- 1:07:16Academy Award nomination. Even the film that predates this
- 1:07:20one, Chunking Express, I think has a little bit more reach in
- 1:07:23the West at least. So Fallen Angels was like less
- 1:07:26popular in his filmography, but it was a challenging watch.
- 1:07:30I mean, watching the movie, I was like, how am I going to talk
- 1:07:32about this without sounding like a big dumb idiot?
- 1:07:35But it was fun and our review actually turned out really
- 1:07:38engaging. I think it was just, it's a hard
- 1:07:41movie to summarize my thoughts on because there was a lot
- 1:07:43happening in it, but I think it was worth watching.
- 1:07:46It was it was the type of challenging experience that I
- 1:07:49like to have watching films unless I'm in the mood to watch
- 1:07:52Shoot Fighter. Yeah, exactly.
- 1:07:56Go either way, that that's how it is for me too.
- 1:07:59It's like sometimes like you have to be in the right mood to
- 1:08:04watch a movie that's going to challenge you.
- 1:08:06I mean, we've brought this, I'm sure we've mentioned this on the
- 1:08:07podcast before. But like, that's one of the
- 1:08:10really interesting things about films to me is the dichotomy of
- 1:08:14like art is meant to challenge your way of thinking, where is
- 1:08:19entertainment is meant to reinforce it.
- 1:08:21And films are both in a way. So it's like these contrasting
- 1:08:25ideas. I do think this combined was our
- 1:08:29highest rated scoring episode because you gave Shoot Fighter 9
- 1:08:32out of 10. I gave Fallen Angels an 8 out of
- 1:08:3410. And people who like movies are
- 1:08:37like what? I guess that means on our
- 1:08:40leaderboard they're like right next to each other.
- 1:08:42And street fighters ahead, actually, so.
- 1:08:44Yeah, shoot, fighter just a bit better than what?
- 1:08:48To clarify, though, to clarify, Street Fighter, I scored it so
- 1:08:51high because it it Street Fighter.
- 1:08:53Sorry, sorry. Shoot, Fighter.
- 1:08:54Very similar title. I do, yeah.
- 1:08:58The man, I should rewatch the 90s Street Fighter.
- 1:09:01That's a fun movie too. But a shoot fighter fight to the
- 1:09:05death, which I think is the first one.
- 1:09:08Yes, I scored it so high because in the same reason I scored
- 1:09:11camera so high. It's like that it succeeded in
- 1:09:15exactly what it was trying to be, you know, like it.
- 1:09:19It nailed it. It aimed low.
- 1:09:22It didn't aim low, it aimed high in that particular ceiling.
- 1:09:28Like it? What a clear visual metaphor.
- 1:09:34I mean, I didn't aim low, boss. The ceiling's just feeling.
- 1:09:38It's the ceiling's fault, really.
- 1:09:39You need to rebuild this whole thing.
- 1:09:41No, I know what you mean. And to clarify, like Fallen
- 1:09:44Angels probably would have been even higher because I think it's
- 1:09:47a very affecting movie. I just found that the B plot in
- 1:09:52the movie took up more time than what felt like should have been
- 1:09:54the A plot and so there was an imbalance in pacing where you
- 1:09:57spent more time with the less interesting characters in the
- 1:10:00story and didn't get enough time with the main pair.
- 1:10:04So I think the Fallen Angels had all the potential and was really
- 1:10:06interesting and my opinion on it has not changed.
- 1:10:08I really enjoy thinking back on it now, but just a little
- 1:10:11imbalanced otherwise it probably would have scored even higher.
- 1:10:14Yeah, if I remember from that conversation, it seemed like
- 1:10:16Fallen Angels was a bit of like, it was almost like leftover
- 1:10:20concepts from one of his previous projects.
- 1:10:23Yeah, it was an expansion on an idea that was first conceived
- 1:10:26for Chunking Express, which released a year earlier.
- 1:10:29And then I think they tried to, like, staple onto that another
- 1:10:33premise. And it just, I don't know, it
- 1:10:35makes me want to go back and watch Chunking Express because I
- 1:10:37wonder if that one feels a little bit more like like it had
- 1:10:40enough detail to fill out a feature, whereas Phony just felt
- 1:10:43like it had enough time to feel like a 60 to 75 minute movie.
- 1:10:47Yeah. So yeah, that's, that's
- 1:10:49understandable. I I think Fallen Angels was the
- 1:10:51last like major film that he made before, like in China
- 1:10:56before he started making films in the US primarily.
- 1:11:00Anyway, that's episode 7. If you had to make one full
- 1:11:02episode to revisit from this season to meet your double
- 1:11:05feature, I would definitely recommend that one.
- 1:11:07Frank, it sounds like you did too.
- 1:11:08It's called also my best title. It's called The Karate Kids
- 1:11:11Aren't All Right, which I just thought was fun.
- 1:11:14It is fun, I enjoy that. I got better at these as we
- 1:11:17went. Yeah, yeah.
- 1:11:20They're going to get, they're going to get more and more click
- 1:11:22baity as we go next season. It's going to be like we watch a
- 1:11:25movie. Parentheses gone wrong.
- 1:11:30Police called. Hashtag Mr. Beast.
- 1:11:35Hashtag beast games anyway. Episode 8, our Halloween
- 1:11:39episode, we inadvertently, because of when we started
- 1:11:43producing the show and releasing episodes, ended up with like a
- 1:11:45full holiday slate. This year.
- 1:11:47We had an episode come out the day before Halloween, an episode
- 1:11:50on Thanksgiving Day in the US and an episode on Christmas Day,
- 1:11:54which is amusing content creation wise.
- 1:11:57Those are bad days to release things, but it's just kind of
- 1:12:01funny. Yeah.
- 1:12:03So episode it was our Halloween episode.
- 1:12:04I, I teed that up Frank, for you before we made our picks so that
- 1:12:07we kind of both had that in mind and we ended up both picking
- 1:12:10horror adjacent movies and frankly 2 of the weirder ones
- 1:12:14that we've talked about. You asked me to watch Sleepy
- 1:12:17Hollow, which was a Tim Burton movie, but like maybe one of the
- 1:12:22less talked about once, you know, not like a forgotten movie
- 1:12:25completely, but certainly not the first thing that comes to
- 1:12:28mind when you hear Tim Burton and Johnny Depp.
- 1:12:31Yeah, but I, I again, I, I think we talked about this in the
- 1:12:34episode. This this movie has a sizeable
- 1:12:36fan base. At the same time, I would say
- 1:12:38it's it's not like completely forgotten and and I'll say this
- 1:12:42is the one that I watched of of the ones this season.
- 1:12:45All right. Yeah, I teed that up and I
- 1:12:47forgot which one it actually was.
- 1:12:48So you have now. We've now both seen Sleepy
- 1:12:50Hollow. There you go.
- 1:12:51Yeah, yeah, I liked it. I I, I thought it was a lot of
- 1:12:55fun actually. You know, again, we mentioned
- 1:12:58this during the episode, but it's it has that like murder
- 1:13:01mystery feel to it for a lot of the film.
- 1:13:05And I feel like with with many Tim Burton movies, like how you
- 1:13:10feel about his style is going to affect how much you enjoy the
- 1:13:12film, especially visually. Like he has such a strong visual
- 1:13:17presence. And I think it's this one almost
- 1:13:22strikes a good balance. Like it has his distinct visual
- 1:13:26style on screen but not like turned up to 11 if that makes
- 1:13:32sense. Yeah, it's turned out it's like
- 1:13:348 out of 10 on the Burton scale. Yeah, totally, totally.
- 1:13:39But yeah, I mean, I was just going to say, what did you score
- 1:13:41this one? I don't remember.
- 1:13:43I this was funny. So in our original episode of
- 1:13:45the show, I went on this whole bit about how because I hate
- 1:13:48scoring and I do this to suffer for people's entertainment.
- 1:13:51I hate when people give things a 7 out of 10 because it's a very
- 1:13:54hard score to interrogate. It's the perfect like I don't
- 1:13:58have to disclose any additional info.
- 1:14:00It's a 7 out of 10. It's OK and we just kind of like
- 1:14:04turned that into a bit we I kept thinking that we would never
- 1:14:06have a real 7 out of 10. But then that's exactly what I
- 1:14:09gave Sleepy Hollow. It's like the most for me
- 1:14:11straight down the line movie of like it doesn't really do
- 1:14:14anything terribly wrong. It's a complete idea.
- 1:14:17It has strong performances and a good visual like style, but it
- 1:14:22gets a little sleepy in the third act and the mystery
- 1:14:24doesn't resolve in an entertaining way for me.
- 1:14:27So by the time it was over, I was kind of like this should
- 1:14:29have been better than it was. It, it had a lot of the pieces
- 1:14:32and, and kind of underwhelmed in ways that pulled this cord down
- 1:14:35for me. Yeah, that which that's totally
- 1:14:38fair. Something that surprised me that
- 1:14:40like, I don't know if you mentioned it as much, was there
- 1:14:44was a surprising amount of like action and fight choreography in
- 1:14:47this movie that I wasn't expecting.
- 1:14:48Like the stunt performer who we did mention.
- 1:14:52I, I, I think it was Ray Park, but he was doing a lot of like
- 1:14:56like the Headless Horseman had like 2 swords he was swinging
- 1:14:59around and like fighting people with.
- 1:15:02Which was, like, cool, but also, like, distracting.
- 1:15:05Yeah, he was trying to be pretty scary.
- 1:15:07And then he would come out and start doing just, like, his
- 1:15:09lightsaber choreography but with pumpkin head on.
- 1:15:12And I was like, why? Well he never actually had the
- 1:15:16pumpkin head on. He was literally just headless
- 1:15:18the whole time. Oh well, there you go.
- 1:15:21Oh, this was also where our episode 8 was our Christopher
- 1:15:23Walken episode because he was technically in both movies that
- 1:15:25we talked about, which ended in me trying and failing to do a
- 1:15:29Christopher Walken impression that you probably heard glimpses
- 1:15:32of in every episode after this one.
- 1:15:34Yeah, he stuck around. Walken's always in the booth.
- 1:15:37He's ready to go. Walken's in the booth.
- 1:15:39He's watching the show. He's sleepy.
- 1:15:45He's is he sleepy? It gets worse every time I do
- 1:15:48it. I think I kind of had it the
- 1:15:49first time which is why it stuck around.
- 1:15:50But man, not not my, not my strength.
- 1:15:54We got to hear it. Yeah.
- 1:15:55And and it's worth noting he he has no lines of dialogue in that
- 1:15:59movie other than like screaming, I think.
- 1:16:02Which is weird. Why even put him in the role at
- 1:16:04all? Very strange, very interesting
- 1:16:06cast. A lot of Star Wars alums.
- 1:16:08A lot of Harry Potter alums. Yeah, yeah.
- 1:16:11But it's cool. I mean, and I think a complaint
- 1:16:13you had during the review too, some of them are underutilized
- 1:16:15which which I agree with as well.
- 1:16:17Oh, I know they have Ian McDermott in there and he
- 1:16:20doesn't do anything. Yeah, yeah, it's a bummer.
- 1:16:24It's a bummer. Also, editor's note, I spent
- 1:16:27quite a while in that review talking about a scene where the
- 1:16:31Headless Horseman kills Dumbledore with what I call the
- 1:16:34grappling hook. And Frank, I think you wanted
- 1:16:36you wanted to clarify that he did not in fact, have a quote
- 1:16:39grappling hook. Yeah, it was a he had a rope and
- 1:16:44then they were inside a building that was surrounded by like a
- 1:16:47white picket fence and he broke the top piece off one of the
- 1:16:51fence spokes. I don't know what those are
- 1:16:55called. I guess A spoke and he wrapped
- 1:16:59the rope around that and then like threw it.
- 1:17:01So it was a grappling hook of sorts.
- 1:17:03But he wasn't walking around like Legend of Zelda with like a
- 1:17:06bunch of items in his pocket. He wasn't leaving bombs next to
- 1:17:10like, cracked rock walls. Yeah, yeah.
- 1:17:13Going to get the next one with a.
- 1:17:15Boomerang. That's a crossover we made,
- 1:17:20yeah. Yeah, yeah, that's Sleepy
- 1:17:22Hollow. And then one of our more.
- 1:17:25I don't even know how to described A prophecy.
- 1:17:28I asked you to watch this one, which Walken's like actually a
- 1:17:31character in. It's possibly the weirdest movie
- 1:17:34we've talked about in the show. I spent the entire review
- 1:17:37genuinely struggling to follow your Plot Summary even though
- 1:17:39you were just saying what happens in the movie.
- 1:17:42Yeah, prophecy was awesome. Prophecy was awesome.
- 1:17:48Looks that notes 4 out of 10. Is that what I gave it?
- 1:17:51A four. You gave it a four, Yeah.
- 1:17:53Yeah, yeah. I don't know, like it.
- 1:17:57It's probably more so than anything on this list.
- 1:17:59It was very hard to to quantify because I want to give it like
- 1:18:04all the points for uniqueness because it it was like baffling
- 1:18:11in a lot of ways because it was such a the writer director had
- 1:18:16such a clear, I think, vision for what he wanted this to be.
- 1:18:21And it translated to the screen in such an interesting way.
- 1:18:27And this is another movie that has like a cult following now.
- 1:18:30And I get that completely. Like, if you're in like this is
- 1:18:34so specific that if this is your thing, like you're going to love
- 1:18:38this like, and that's probably why they made so many of them.
- 1:18:42Like this was the first of five Total Prophecy films, I think.
- 1:18:47Which turned into like a threat that whoever lost season 1 like
- 1:18:52scored fewer total points. Was going to have to watch all
- 1:18:54the other prophecy movies. And I do think that that was
- 1:18:58maybe a bridge too far. We will find some way to cover
- 1:19:02prophecies 2 through 5. I'm just going to make you go
- 1:19:05watch them by yourself because that just seems sad, no?
- 1:19:08We'll see. We'll see.
- 1:19:08We're not going to We're not going to like leave that loose
- 1:19:12thread. We will revisit the prophecy in
- 1:19:14some way it. Might come out at some point as
- 1:19:17like audio commentaries, you know, maybe like a different
- 1:19:19format for us where you can just use it and watch along the movie
- 1:19:23yourself. Because then the people who are
- 1:19:25watching it will be those ones you mentioned who are like, this
- 1:19:27is my speed. Yeah, totally, totally.
- 1:19:30Yeah, so. And, and I honestly, I'm looking
- 1:19:31forward to that. Like the Prophecy is weird
- 1:19:33enough that it's worth revisiting, and I think it'll be
- 1:19:36interesting to see you interact with it more too.
- 1:19:40I I I would be curious to see what you would think watching
- 1:19:43one of these movies. I would have to get up to speed
- 1:19:46on that first one because you, I haven't seen it yet, but yeah,
- 1:19:50I'd probably watch that and then we'll see.
- 1:19:51We'll see. That'll be something for down
- 1:19:53the line. But we have not forgotten about
- 1:19:54it. And it was one of the one of the
- 1:19:57funnier recurring threads throughout the second-half of
- 1:19:59our first run of episodes was talking about the prophecy
- 1:20:02verse. Yeah.
- 1:20:03And I would score this one higher too, actually, just like
- 1:20:06worth noting, like I think some of these, there's been a string
- 1:20:10here that I would score higher than I originally did.
- 1:20:14You know, sometimes you just have that initial viewing, but
- 1:20:18you need some distance from it to really reflect on them.
- 1:20:20And Prophecy. It earns a lot of points for
- 1:20:24just being its own thing. All right, moving from that one
- 1:20:28into episode 9. Frank, I think this would kick
- 1:20:31off with your review again. I asked you to watch 1994's No
- 1:20:35Escape. This was also one of our funnier
- 1:20:38reviews. I think I liked this one a lot.
- 1:20:41Yeah, I'd like to no escape honestly, like.
- 1:20:44And let's check when he gave no escape. 4 out of 10.
- 1:20:47Oh no, barely. Frank Approved means 4 out of
- 1:20:5210. Who's doing this?
- 1:20:54Who's going around scoring these movies?
- 1:20:55Who is this person? Who is?
- 1:20:56This. I mean, I don't know, maybe I'm
- 1:21:02just like being kinder to all of them now, but no escape had its
- 1:21:08issues. I will say that it it certainly
- 1:21:10had its issues. I I think in terms of it being a
- 1:21:14sci-fi film, one of my biggest takeaways or things that took me
- 1:21:19out of the viewing experience was it didn't do enough to
- 1:21:24elaborate on and and explore the world that they were in in a way
- 1:21:28that made sense to the audience. So I found that very distracting
- 1:21:31because it was, it was a very isolated for the most part in
- 1:21:36just this one location film, but it was set in a future world and
- 1:21:41it just kind of didn't make sense in a way.
- 1:21:44We just needed a little more information to flesh that whole
- 1:21:48world out. So, but it had, you know, again,
- 1:21:54some great character performances in there, like fun
- 1:21:58action sequences, again, a uniqueness to it.
- 1:22:02Like there's there's like I'm always going to be interested in
- 1:22:08something that feels new, feels like something I haven't gotten
- 1:22:12from a film experience before. And Noscape had that in in its
- 1:22:16in its own weird way. Noscape also kicked off an
- 1:22:20amusing trend where in talking about it, you had discovered
- 1:22:23that there was a Super Nintendo game for No Escape.
- 1:22:26And in order to flesh out their video content, the YouTube
- 1:22:30version, which I've been trying to add more like interactivity
- 1:22:34to with each new upload, I decided I would just play the No
- 1:22:37Escape game for like 20 minutes and put that up while we were
- 1:22:41talking about it. Like, so as soon as the game
- 1:22:42comes up in the conversation, the video switches to me playing
- 1:22:46No Escape. That game is so hard.
- 1:22:48I just could not get past like the second level.
- 1:22:52As soon as it begins, you're just dropped off in a jungle
- 1:22:55being chased by all these enemies, which is like a weirdly
- 1:22:58unique element. It's a platformer like Mario,
- 1:23:01but you're being chased from behind by enemies from the
- 1:23:03second it begins. Very weird game.
- 1:23:06Yeah, I will say, actually watching back the gameplay
- 1:23:09footage of that, it reminded me of a scene that I didn't mention
- 1:23:12in the review where there's a scene where Ray Liotta is sort
- 1:23:18of thrown into this like fight pit against this really big
- 1:23:23dude. And they both have these like
- 1:23:25Spears. And there's, there's like a like
- 1:23:29spike pit or something on either side of them or like water.
- 1:23:33And it's like setting it up to be this big fight sequence.
- 1:23:36And I, and I, I remembered this because I was watching the
- 1:23:39gameplay footage and, and it sort of sets that up.
- 1:23:42You get to a screen and there's like a guy standing there with
- 1:23:44like a big spear weapon. And I was like, Oh yeah, it's
- 1:23:47like the scene in the movie, because he like Indiana Jones.
- 1:23:51This guy basically like it's setting up to where they're
- 1:23:54going to have this big fight and then regular just immediately
- 1:23:57just throws the spear into his chest and the guy dies.
- 1:24:01It's just very. Like that's a bit different from
- 1:24:03the game where, as I recall, I kicked him in the ankle several
- 1:24:06times until he died. Yeah, it was pretty much the
- 1:24:08same actually. So that's pretty much.
- 1:24:10The same. That is a good bit though, of
- 1:24:12all the bits to reuse the Indiana Jones shooting the guy
- 1:24:14thing. Yeah, yeah.
- 1:24:16So I just that that felt worth mentioning because it was
- 1:24:18something that I thought was fun that I that we didn't talk about
- 1:24:20before. Absolutely no escape.
- 1:24:23I think possibly again, in my like, top three of like movies
- 1:24:27you reviewed for the show, I just really enjoyed that
- 1:24:28conversation. Not so much Rushmore.
- 1:24:34Half of that episode. I feel like I spent the entire
- 1:24:37Rushmore review just like trying to articulate one idea about how
- 1:24:42the movie must read for someone who can relate to its core, like
- 1:24:46main character Max versus somebody who has maybe been the
- 1:24:49victim of the kind of advances that he was doing to the woman
- 1:24:52in the story. And I don't know if that
- 1:24:54derailed the conversation too much or not, but it's a very
- 1:24:56divisive movie for me because I think it was relatively well
- 1:25:00made, but also didn't like, I don't know, I don't feel like it
- 1:25:05fully explored the ramifications of what it was about.
- 1:25:09Yeah, yeah. Like, I wish I had picked
- 1:25:13another one of his films from that era because this was maybe
- 1:25:19not. I don't think this was his first
- 1:25:20film that he ever made, but it was. 2nd I believe.
- 1:25:23Yeah. Yeah, I can feature.
- 1:25:25Right. Exactly.
- 1:25:26Yeah, that's a good, that's a good distinction.
- 1:25:28So yeah, that's unfortunate. Rushmore just sounded like kind
- 1:25:32of a bummer because. It was, and I think it didn't
- 1:25:35want to be a bummer. I think it wanted to be a
- 1:25:38somewhat abusing case study about the emotions behind an
- 1:25:43obviously unrealistic like romantic pinting.
- 1:25:47Max in the story is a 15 year old who decides that he's in
- 1:25:51love with an adult woman who teaches at his school.
- 1:25:54And the story is largely about him trying to come to grips with
- 1:25:57the fact that, like, that's not a realistic thing to pursue.
- 1:26:00But in telling that story, I think there were some decisions
- 1:26:03made that, I don't know, it just it made the character less
- 1:26:07sympathetic than I think they wanted him to be.
- 1:26:09And I tried to articulate, like in detail why that was in the
- 1:26:12review. I still thought the movie was
- 1:26:13decent. As I recall, I gave it a six out
- 1:26:16of 10. So like it's not a bad film, but
- 1:26:19I think what I ultimately ended up saying was like just watch
- 1:26:22any later Wes Anderson movie because this has all the DNA of
- 1:26:26his future stuff, but it's an unrefined work compared to what
- 1:26:29he has made since. So just go literally grab
- 1:26:33anything he made in like the 2000s onward and you'll probably
- 1:26:37have a better time. Yeah, Yep, that's like I said, I
- 1:26:41should have picked another one from the 90s, so.
- 1:26:43Now that's It wasn't a bad pick. It was a very interesting pick.
- 1:26:46I was just, I don't know, I had mixed mixed feelings about it
- 1:26:49and it showed in the in the final score.
- 1:26:52We go from there into season 1, episode 10.
- 1:26:56This, this is the worst thing of all time.
- 1:27:02Frank, you asked me to watch for our Thanksgiving episode on a
- 1:27:05day where we give thanks. You asked me to watch Sphere 2
- 1:27:12out of 10. I have no further comments about
- 1:27:15Sphere. We spent an hour in the in, like
- 1:27:19the final edited version of that episode is like 50 minutes of
- 1:27:24just me trying to communicate the plot of Sphere and how
- 1:27:27stupid and gibberish it was. I don't even think we got into
- 1:27:31much analysis because it was so hard just to explain what that
- 1:27:34movie is to someone who had not seen it themselves.
- 1:27:36Yeah, yeah. I listened back to that review
- 1:27:40while I was driving to join our family for Thanksgiving dinner,
- 1:27:45and you know I came in upset. Hey, happy Thanksgiving Like I
- 1:27:53can't right now. I got to go to my room and
- 1:27:55they're like you don't live here, but he's I'm sorry, I'm
- 1:27:57going to the room. I.
- 1:27:58Got to go to a a room. Any room.
- 1:28:00It's not this one. Preferably a cube shaped room,
- 1:28:04not a sphere if that's available.
- 1:28:05There's just no spherical food. Get those meatballs away from
- 1:28:08me. We weren't serving meat.
- 1:28:10Where did you get them? I brought them with me, yeah.
- 1:28:14As an example, in case there wasn't any spherical food.
- 1:28:17This is what I don't want. Yeah, yeah, Sphere may be angry.
- 1:28:22Sphere got a 2 out of 10. It's just everything we've said
- 1:28:26about the other movies that underwhelmed us.
- 1:28:28But more so, it's an inarticulate movie that the lead
- 1:28:32actor said on the record was like unfinished when it was
- 1:28:36released. Yeah, that's the yeah, that's a
- 1:28:39huge take away there because I feel like what audiences got
- 1:28:45with that movie was just a complete hodgepodge of just what
- 1:28:50they had time to do basically. And that with something that's
- 1:28:54such a heady premise that like deep kind of sci-fi stuff.
- 1:28:59That one was really surprising to me.
- 1:29:02There was some of these, you know, like the one we're going
- 1:29:04to talk about next where I was like bad reviews, but I'm going
- 1:29:07to I'm going to pick it anyway. Sphere though, I was just like,
- 1:29:11how bad could it be? Like, look at it, you know, and
- 1:29:14then it was just abysmally bad, so.
- 1:29:16Just holding the meatball in his hand, like look at it, how bad
- 1:29:19could it be? Look at that.
- 1:29:20It's just a little round guy. Round Guy Yeah, that should have
- 1:29:25been the title of that episode. It so irritated me.
- 1:29:29I did post a summary review on Reddit from our official Meet
- 1:29:35Your double feature account, just like drum up interest in
- 1:29:37that episode. And I had a lot of people in the
- 1:29:39comments telling me the book is much better because it's
- 1:29:41originally a Michael Crichton novel, same guy who made like
- 1:29:44Jurassic Park and a bunch of other stuff.
- 1:29:46And a lot of people really liked the book.
- 1:29:48So you're one of those people who reads things, go reads, but
- 1:29:53don't watch it. Yeah, yeah, whatever.
- 1:29:55I'm sure the book is great. That's not what we had to watch,
- 1:29:57though. Like this is, you know this is.
- 1:30:00It's not. Read your double feature.
- 1:30:02Yeah. The sphere was bad, and then
- 1:30:05kind of a double whammy because you didn't like yours either,
- 1:30:07right? I asked you to watch Memphis
- 1:30:09Belle, which was a World War 2 drama.
- 1:30:12Not sure what I was on at the time, but yeah.
- 1:30:15Me neither. I think you were like
- 1:30:17Thanksgiving, World War 2, these two things.
- 1:30:20That's kind of yeah. That was basically the word
- 1:30:21associated. I was like Thanksgiving,
- 1:30:22meatball, World War 2. Is this something?
- 1:30:25This is something right? This is something.
- 1:30:29Yeah, Memphis Belle, as I mentioned, it had some
- 1:30:33impressive technical aspects. It had a scale to it, it more so
- 1:30:40than any other film that we watched.
- 1:30:43It felt like the first act sort of promised what the rest of the
- 1:30:48movie was going to be like, and it just didn't deliver on that
- 1:30:50at all. It just from the second act
- 1:30:54onward just was this very claustrophobic and just visually
- 1:31:00uninteresting and not that dramatic either type film.
- 1:31:05And I mean, I'm not like a World War Two guy or anything either.
- 1:31:11So it's like if there was some element of that there, it was
- 1:31:15lost on me in terms of like, you know, I'm sure there's there's
- 1:31:19people out there that are like, oh, that kind of bomber, you
- 1:31:22know, that's really interesting. I was like, not none of that,
- 1:31:25Yeah. I'm like World War 2 dads in the
- 1:31:27chat. Yeah, Let us know.
- 1:31:30Yeah. Why is that interesting?
- 1:31:32Why do you there's, there's better things out there, you
- 1:31:34know. Yeah, but.
- 1:31:36Surely you've not exhausted all of the good ones.
- 1:31:39Yeah. And then they turn on sphere and
- 1:31:41they're like, I don't know, I'm going to go back to my to my
- 1:31:43boring planes. Yeah, Sphere's even worse.
- 1:31:45I gave that to Memphis Belle. You gave a three out of 10, so
- 1:31:49both near the bottom. Quite a stinker in terms of our
- 1:31:52actual recommendations, although the episode was pretty funny.
- 1:31:55Yeah, the. Episode is fun, the films are
- 1:31:57bad that and that's that's part of the fun.
- 1:31:59All right, well, we'll go from that straight into episode 11.
- 1:32:02Frank, you opened us up on that one with 1997's The Wrong Guy,
- 1:32:06which was a Canadian, as I later learned, direct to video comedy
- 1:32:10film from the minds of the people who made the Kids in the
- 1:32:14Hall TV show. Yeah, and I really liked this
- 1:32:16one. I I think what did I give a 7
- 1:32:19out of 10? 7 out of 10.
- 1:32:21All right, cool. Yeah, no, that's that's totally
- 1:32:24valid. This one, as you just mentioned,
- 1:32:27you know that 7 out of 10 feels very non committal in terms of
- 1:32:32like how you feel about a movie. But I feel like this one, that's
- 1:32:37exactly where it lands because I appreciated it.
- 1:32:41I liked it. It didn't go above and beyond,
- 1:32:44but it didn't overstay its welcome either.
- 1:32:46It was just a very competent comedy film that was written and
- 1:32:51performed by very competent comedians.
- 1:32:55Like it was funny. It was just really funny.
- 1:32:59It's. A funny movie.
- 1:33:00Yeah. Every time we've talked about a
- 1:33:02comedy, no matter how much we dance around it, ultimately the
- 1:33:05question is just did you find the comedy funny and it
- 1:33:08throughout the season? A lot of time the answer was no,
- 1:33:10but for the wrong guy. It was like, yeah, no, this is
- 1:33:12just a funny comedy on paper with good performances.
- 1:33:17There you go. Yeah, yeah, exactly.
- 1:33:19So I, I stand by that 7 out of 10 for that one.
- 1:33:22Yeah. We move on to my pick, which you
- 1:33:24kind of teed us up on Cutthroat Island from 1995.
- 1:33:28This one, this was the most recent episode that's been
- 1:33:31edited and released at time of recording, so the conversation
- 1:33:33is very fresh for me. It's such a baffling one.
- 1:33:36It was a movie that was very expensive and had a lot going in
- 1:33:40its favor, and a lot of the work done in the final product is
- 1:33:43like very competent. Good music, looks nice,
- 1:33:46interesting stunts, but just absolutely horrible performances
- 1:33:51and writing that sink whatever this movie could have been on
- 1:33:55paper as soon as it begins. I mean just an awful film that
- 1:34:00is lost in editing and was just it had no shot.
- 1:34:04There were so many pre production hurdles that we
- 1:34:06detailed in in the full episode that there was just no way this
- 1:34:09was ever going to be good. Yeah, yeah.
- 1:34:14Which part of me had a hope? I was like maybe everyone else
- 1:34:18is wrong and it is good. I mean, we've had a couple
- 1:34:23examples of that where we were not aligned with the popular
- 1:34:26opinion about the movie. You kind of like Soldier.
- 1:34:29You didn't like Rifters. I mean, there was there was
- 1:34:31enough to be suspicious that maybe there was something fun to
- 1:34:34this movie, but ultimately the bad just outweighs the good way
- 1:34:37too much. Including the lead actor Geena
- 1:34:40Davis, who publicly it was known she didn't want to do the movie
- 1:34:43because of the state it had fallen into.
- 1:34:45And that shines through so much in the performance.
- 1:34:47It looks like she's trying to make the movie bomb on purpose.
- 1:34:50Which is a bummer. I mean, if that, yeah, if you
- 1:34:53can clearly see that on screen, you're like, well, if she's not
- 1:34:56happy, I'm not enjoying this either, so.
- 1:34:59Exactly, exactly. It just there's nothing fun
- 1:35:02about it. And this kind of swashbuckling
- 1:35:03action adventure story has to be fun.
- 1:35:05It doesn't have to be smart or good, but if it's not fun, it's
- 1:35:09like, what am I doing here? I don't want to see like the guy
- 1:35:13on the Pirates of the Caribbean ride at Disney when he's having
- 1:35:15like a bad day and he's just like yar and whatever.
- 1:35:20You talk about like the animatronic people at the
- 1:35:23Disneyland rides aren't. There real people.
- 1:35:25I've never been to Disneyland. This is an uninformed analogy.
- 1:35:31Yeah, I assume there was real pirate man.
- 1:35:34There, there was real. I I think this is this.
- 1:35:38I think this is actually true. The originally they used real
- 1:35:43like human remains for the like skeletons on the Disneyland ride
- 1:35:48because yeah, I've. Heard that?
- 1:35:51Come on. Yeah, yeah.
- 1:35:54I mean, Google it like to verify, but I've heard that
- 1:35:58enough that I think it's it's verifiable.
- 1:36:02That's crazy. How has there not been like a
- 1:36:03ghost story set at Disney's Pirates of the Caribbean ride
- 1:36:06where the ghost pirates come back?
- 1:36:08Except they wouldn't be pirates because they'd be random other
- 1:36:11dead people. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 1:36:13I don't know. Or it'd be the Ghost Doctor from
- 1:36:16the Pirates of the Caribbean ride.
- 1:36:20Yeah, no, it's mostly it's, it's, I think entirely I, I've
- 1:36:23been on the ride once or twice. It scared me a lot as a child,
- 1:36:26actually. I think it's entirely
- 1:36:28animatronics. I think they added like a Johnny
- 1:36:30Depp animatronic that was not they're.
- 1:36:33Wait, you run the Pirates of the Caribbean ride as a child?
- 1:36:36Yeah, yeah. But really, really.
- 1:36:38Young it's a family vacation. I think you.
- 1:36:41I think you weren't born yet. I.
- 1:36:42Think that was why you missed it, picturing like 10 year old
- 1:36:48you on a ride and me just at home.
- 1:36:49Like man, where is everybody? Gone for a while, playing a lot
- 1:36:54of video games here. A lot of, oh, video games.
- 1:36:57There was also a Super Nintendo Cutthroat Island game which I
- 1:37:01could not get working, so I played the Sega Genesis version
- 1:37:03instead. And that even harder than the No
- 1:37:06Escape game. Both extremely difficult, that
- 1:37:09one. Looked more fun though compared
- 1:37:11to the no escape one. It was the no escape one felt
- 1:37:14cheap. The cut the Rhode Island game
- 1:37:16was like well realized but had that arcade machine kind of
- 1:37:20ethos behind it where you had a set number of lives and if you
- 1:37:25died enough on level one that sometimes you'd get into level 2
- 1:37:28and only have like one life left.
- 1:37:30And the second level of the game is this stupid vehicle section
- 1:37:33where you just have to guess whether or not like the left or
- 1:37:35the right side of the road is going to have an obstacle on it.
- 1:37:38And it's just a memorization game.
- 1:37:39So I had to play the first level like 6 times just to get enough
- 1:37:43attempts to try to memorize the other part.
- 1:37:45And then I finally made it to Level 3 and I broke the game
- 1:37:47somehow. I beat every enemy on screen and
- 1:37:49just couldn't continue. Where was the end?
- 1:37:52They just were like, nobody's made it this far.
- 1:37:54Like nobody has that many. Quarters.
- 1:37:57Do you know how many? Grifters scams you'd have to do
- 1:37:59to get enough quarters to get to this point in the game on your
- 1:38:02Sega Genesis? Are you kidding me?
- 1:38:04Yeah, Jackie's ex Big grift was actually just financing
- 1:38:07Cutthroat Island the movie. That's too big.
- 1:38:10Too big of a grift? Well, that's the one we didn't
- 1:38:12get to. See.
- 1:38:13Yeah, that's true. That's true.
- 1:38:15All right. Episode 12, last one of the
- 1:38:17season. This recap has gone so much
- 1:38:19longer than I thought it would, but I don't know why I thought
- 1:38:21it would take less time because it's 24, so I think I went first
- 1:38:29again. Frank, you decided to end season
- 1:38:311 by having me watch a made for TV movie, which I just think is
- 1:38:34a funny choice. Yeah, got you got.
- 1:38:37You got me. Indeed.
- 1:38:41You had me watch Babylon 5 The Gathering, which is like the
- 1:38:43pilot for the Babylon 5 sci-fi TV series that followed a year
- 1:38:48or so after. We really just talked a lot
- 1:38:51about Star Trek during this review because Babylon 5 the
- 1:38:55movie is fine. It's pretty good, but it feels
- 1:39:00like watching TV and not a film. So there's just a kind of
- 1:39:03general acceptance of like the production level is very
- 1:39:05different. There was no prestige TV shows
- 1:39:08at this time where it would look like you were watching a movie.
- 1:39:10It was it was ATV show, but for 90 minutes.
- 1:39:14Yeah, yeah. And we learned that it's was
- 1:39:18actually the precursor to our favorite Star Trek series, Deep
- 1:39:22Space 9. And Deep Space 9 was seemingly
- 1:39:25the one that actually borrowed a lot of concepts from this one.
- 1:39:28Yeah, I spent the whole movie thinking it was the opposite
- 1:39:30'cause I thought you had said that when you pitched it and I
- 1:39:32just misheard, I guess. So I spent the whole movie being
- 1:39:34like, I can't believe how much this movie ripped off Deep Space
- 1:39:389, my favorite show. How embarrassing.
- 1:39:41And then I looked it up and it was the opposite.
- 1:39:42And I was like, well, there's probably more to this, you know,
- 1:39:44we shouldn't cast judgements. World War 2 bombers and stuff
- 1:39:48so. Yeah, World War 2 bombers.
- 1:39:49Yeah. Yeah, John Cusack.
- 1:39:52So yeah, Babylon 5 is like, hard to explain because sci-fi lore
- 1:39:56is dense and if you're watching something that's brand new and
- 1:40:00has to introduce every new concept to you as it goes, just
- 1:40:03takes forever to explain. Like I think a lot of people
- 1:40:05through osmosis will know that Star Trek has Klingons and
- 1:40:10Vulcans. Because they've, like, heard it
- 1:40:11before. You don't really need to spend a
- 1:40:13lot of time introducing what that is.
- 1:40:16You can understand it in context.
- 1:40:17Whereas Babylon 5 is like, you've never seen any of this.
- 1:40:19We have to tell you every alien, every major character, the
- 1:40:23history of our entire world in as few words as possible.
- 1:40:26So it's like, it was interesting.
- 1:40:28I think I gave it a 7 because it was like, yeah, pretty good, but
- 1:40:31very hard to give a complete judgement because it was so
- 1:40:33obviously just a launchpad for a show.
- 1:40:36Yeah, yeah, I was hoping it would be a little more than
- 1:40:40that. I was hoping it would sort of
- 1:40:41transcend that idea a bit because I've seen some pilots
- 1:40:45like for shows that tell a really complete story, they they
- 1:40:50still leave it open-ended, but it's like kind of like this is
- 1:40:53what you're getting and, you know, and here's our kind of
- 1:40:55best foot forward. And so I was hoping, given that
- 1:40:58this was a movie as opposed to like just a regular length
- 1:41:01episode, that it might have it leaned more in that direction,
- 1:41:05but. It does, I mean it does give you
- 1:41:081 full mystery that it resolves that has a climax and then they
- 1:41:12give you some lore heading into the rest of the show.
- 1:41:15You could even say maybe they don't give enough of a lead in
- 1:41:17to the show because you mostly just have this one like mystery
- 1:41:21surrounding your central character.
- 1:41:23But the show, sorry, the movie The Gathering did also suffer
- 1:41:27from being kind of low budget like in feel.
- 1:41:30I mean Star Trek may have apparently ripped it off
- 1:41:31completely, but it is a very high production value show for
- 1:41:36the time. Some things have an age 12, but
- 1:41:37whatever. Babylon 5 looks cheap.
- 1:41:40I mean there's people wearing I'll fitting clothes and there's
- 1:41:43like really good alien makeup. But then some other people just
- 1:41:46they didn't even try. Like it's a giant mixed bag of a
- 1:41:50production that felt like a proof of concept and not like a
- 1:41:53a hype machine movie. Yeah, yeah, that's, that's,
- 1:41:57that's kind of a shame. I mean, 7 out of 10 is not bad.
- 1:41:59That's a respectable score, but. It and that speaks to how
- 1:42:03competent the writing is in the movie.
- 1:42:05Like I'm sure Babylon 5 the show has a pretty good narrative push
- 1:42:09because a lot of it comes from the brain of this one guy who
- 1:42:12wrote like 90% of everything that was ever written for
- 1:42:15Babylon 5. And it is good.
- 1:42:16It's a competent sci-fi drama. If you like Star Trek but have
- 1:42:19watched everything from the 80s and 90s, definitely watch
- 1:42:22Babylon 5. Maybe you already have, but as a
- 1:42:25movie for like general viewing by itself, I I wouldn't give it
- 1:42:29anything above a 7 because it's kind of hard to get into that.
- 1:42:33Yeah, that's valid. That's bad blood five last movie
- 1:42:36of the season also weirdly has a sci-fi connection, even though
- 1:42:40it's not a sci-fi film. The cutting edge.
- 1:42:43I picked this one for you, Frank, because it made me laugh
- 1:42:45when I looked at the credits. It's a romance story about two
- 1:42:51people from different worlds. She's a figure skater and he's a
- 1:42:54hockey man. But the person who wrote the
- 1:42:57film was Tony Gilroy, who many, many years later would write
- 1:43:01Rogue One for Star Wars and write and or the like extremely
- 1:43:04popular show. I just thought the contrast
- 1:43:06between him doing all these like really big scale political
- 1:43:10sci-fi stories against cheeky young adult like sports romance
- 1:43:15was too hard to pass up. Yeah, no.
- 1:43:18And like I enjoyed this one. Remind me when I scored it.
- 1:43:21You gave Cutting Edge A5 out of 10, and this, I will say is the
- 1:43:24one that I did go back and watch.
- 1:43:26I like, I think like the day after we recorded that episode,
- 1:43:29I went back and watched it as well and I completely agree.
- 1:43:31I also would have given it a 5 out of 10.
- 1:43:33Right. It's very middle of the road,
- 1:43:35but yeah, like not in a bad way. It's like leaning over into that
- 1:43:39positive side of that even split.
- 1:43:41I liked it, but I don't feel like I was missing anything
- 1:43:45having not seen it. That yeah, that's a good way to
- 1:43:47put it. That's a good way to put it.
- 1:43:48It was the the two leads had good chemistry and charisma.
- 1:43:54And it was a fun, if not like basic concept.
- 1:44:00Yeah. And felt like a kind of a
- 1:44:02blending of two genres, like it was a sports romance movie.
- 1:44:05So there's a lot of appeal, like general appeal there.
- 1:44:09A lot of general appeal. I mean, if you're someone who
- 1:44:11likes romances, I think the romance elements to the story
- 1:44:14are pretty good. It's a classic enemies to
- 1:44:17lovers, as they say, because the figure skater woman is very like
- 1:44:20standoffish and is always trying to kind of scare off her new her
- 1:44:23new partners because she thinks none of them are good enough.
- 1:44:25And so of course when this guy comes in and he's like a roguish
- 1:44:28hockey player man, he doesn't know what he's doing.
- 1:44:30And so it kind of creates this friction.
- 1:44:31At the beginning, I did think the movie had some interesting
- 1:44:33lighting. Like it was a fairly well shot
- 1:44:37film, although they were very hesitant to actually show a lot
- 1:44:40of ice skating. It was very like, we can't
- 1:44:43easily show you the people doing it, the actors.
- 1:44:46So we're going to do a lot of close-ups and shadows during the
- 1:44:48actual like third act ice skating parts.
- 1:44:51Yeah, which I, I did think lent itself to some good
- 1:44:54cinematography at times where the the like stunt performers
- 1:44:58who were filling in and actually doing the skating were
- 1:45:01silhouetted with some sort of bright overpowering lights
- 1:45:05behind them. And I, I thought that looked
- 1:45:07really good, especially when they like would sparingly cut to
- 1:45:10some some pretty wide shots. I, I thought those looked really
- 1:45:13cool. You could have used more of that
- 1:45:15though. That's what I mean, like it was
- 1:45:17a good cover up for what they had to depict on screen, but
- 1:45:21because of how effortful it probably was to even do what
- 1:45:23they did, the movie felt like it was skipping over parts that
- 1:45:26should have been more climactic. Like I anticipated we'd spend
- 1:45:29more time watching them do their final skate routine, but it kind
- 1:45:32of just comes and goes and the actual story beat happens before
- 1:45:35they begin. I don't know, I think there's
- 1:45:37more you could have done, but the movie was probably made
- 1:45:39really quickly and for what it was, it was surprisingly fun to
- 1:45:42watch. So strong.
- 1:45:43Five out of 10. Yeah, good, good, closer, good
- 1:45:45one to add on. Good, closer, kind of seasonal,
- 1:45:48kind of wintry. We released that one.
- 1:45:50That's our Christmas Day episode.
- 1:45:52Doesn't feel like it because I think we forget to bring that up
- 1:45:54until the episode's like almost done, but.
- 1:45:56It's fine people. People will know what day it is.
- 1:45:59People will know what day it is when they're like, sorry kids,
- 1:46:02we got to open the presents in a few hours.
- 1:46:04I got to catch the new Meet You double feature.
- 1:46:07Yeah, play for the kids. That's what they like for the
- 1:46:10kids. What is our show if not for the
- 1:46:12kids? Babylon 5.
- 1:46:14They love it. Babylon 5.
- 1:46:16They want to hear about the history of the Volcar and the
- 1:46:21Drapnar or whatever it was. Play the door.
- 1:46:24Door closing sound. Play the door closing sound.
- 1:46:27All right Frank, that was an exhaustive recap of season 1.
- 1:46:31I would say pretty thorough. Hopefully if you have not caught
- 1:46:35much of our first season, this was kind of a good primer.
- 1:46:37We are continuing right into Season 2, although we'll have a
- 1:46:40bit of a different style bonus episode coming up after this
- 1:46:43one. But join us in four weeks time
- 1:46:45when we formally kick off Season 2.
- 1:46:48Originally I was going to have us discuss the premise for
- 1:46:51Season 2 at the end of this recording, but because we've
- 1:46:53gone long, I think we'll just figure that out off Mike.
- 1:46:56Yeah, that sounds good. So.
- 1:46:58Just stay tuned to our socials. Meet Your doublefeature.com is
- 1:47:02our website where you can listen to full episodes and read
- 1:47:04written reviews. We also are on social media
- 1:47:07Instagram at Meet Your Double Feature and also on Blue Sky at
- 1:47:10Mydf Pod. And then Frank because I, I
- 1:47:13think I forgot to help you pitch this last time.
- 1:47:15What is the website folks can go to to follow your filmmaking
- 1:47:18exploits? Exploits.
- 1:47:22Misadventures. Schemes.
- 1:47:25Grips. Yeah, you can.
- 1:47:28You can keep up with our exploits as Thomas put it, at
- 1:47:32Sardonic. That is Sardonic mp.com for
- 1:47:38Sardonic Motion Pictures. That is the name of the
- 1:47:40production company that our first independent film was
- 1:47:44released under. So you can get updates on when
- 1:47:48that will be available on streaming early next year and
- 1:47:53any future updates about our upcoming projects.
- 1:47:56Fantastic. Yeah, stay tuned for that.
- 1:47:58We talked a lot in our first season about the Film Festival
- 1:48:00run of Frank's Company's first film, Nate and Ryan Venice,
- 1:48:04which was super fun. We were able to promote those
- 1:48:05shows as they came and went. But yeah, heading into Season 2,
- 1:48:08it'll be more about the streaming release.
- 1:48:10So thank you all for listening. This was our Season 1 recap
- 1:48:13episode coming up in two weeks. On Thursday, we are going to
- 1:48:16have the debut of a new spinoff series here at Meet Your Double
- 1:48:19Feature that we're both very excited about.
- 1:48:21And then two weeks following that, we will be kicking off a
- 1:48:23brand new season. We're going to reset the
- 1:48:25leaderboard. So, Frank, for the folks
- 1:48:27watching on the YouTube version, I'm going to put up the final
- 1:48:29leaderboard right now, which I guess is the definitive list of
- 1:48:33the top forgotten 90s films. Yeah, the end, if you will.
- 1:48:38This is it. There's clearly nothing that we
- 1:48:40missed. Yeah, yeah.
- 1:48:42If you think there's something we missed, don't tell us.
- 1:48:44We don't want to know. Don't tell us.
- 1:48:46We don't want to hear about it. It's Gamera.
- 1:48:49It's. Gamera Gamera was the best one.
- 1:48:52It's just Gamera. The worst is sphere.
- 1:48:56Sphere should be like 500 places below everything else because
- 1:48:59it's that bad. But do watch camera.
- 1:49:01Do watch shoot fighter, pump up the volume.
- 1:49:04Anything in the top five? Very good.
- 1:49:06You don't watch whatever you want.
- 1:49:08You do you watch. Whatever you want, don't listen
- 1:49:10to me. Don't listen to people in your
- 1:49:12ears. All right, that's it.
- 1:49:19I'll see you in two weeks. Thank you for listening.
