- 0:53Speaker 1: Hello, ladies and gentlemen, missus Carley with Let's Talk and
- 0:58Speaker 1: Today's show.
- 1:00Speaker 2: Do not blame it on me, all.
- 1:02Speaker 4: Right, you don't have to.
- 1:04Speaker 1: Actually, I actually have well as my as my co host.
- 1:10Speaker 2: Just dogs me. Lisa's in the building.
- 1:13Speaker 1: Hello, My uh my sister, we call her Sissy. Her
- 1:19Speaker 1: name is Carlotte, but we call her Sissy is here
- 1:23Speaker 1: and Victoria Barksdale. She is also here and they are
- 1:28Speaker 1: part of the Charleston Distance Run. Now, my distance is
- 1:35Speaker 1: no more than three miles, so.
- 1:39Speaker 2: With a lot of clothing.
- 1:40Speaker 1: Okay, we had that discussion off air, which your estate
- 1:43Speaker 1: off air, but.
- 1:46Speaker 2: That that had so so one of.
- 1:53Speaker 1: The things that has always intrigued me about the Charleston
- 1:57Speaker 1: Distance Run was it was the reality of how they
- 2:01Speaker 1: how they kind of market it, and how they get
- 2:04Speaker 1: so many people in it. So since like, I know,
- 2:11Speaker 1: so you've you've done it all but a couple of years.
- 2:15Speaker 5: Or something, you know, I've done it six years, six years,
- 2:18Speaker 5: six years way back when I was in high school.
- 2:21Speaker 5: And then the last year I've done the first leg
- 2:25Speaker 5: of a relay because they offer a relay and again
- 2:28Speaker 5: this year Victoria, I and I and one other person
- 2:31Speaker 5: will be doing the fifteen out relay. So that's somebody
- 2:35Speaker 5: runs three males, somebody runs five, and somebody runs seven.
- 2:39Speaker 2: Oh and somebody runs okay, who's running seven.
- 2:45Speaker 6: Our friend Beth is going to do the seven which
- 2:47Speaker 6: is the last leg. It's all flat on the boulevard,
- 2:51Speaker 6: but it's on the boulevard and by then it is hot.
- 2:53Speaker 4: It is hot, hot, hot.
- 2:55Speaker 5: Can imagine and Victoria will be going up what we
- 2:58Speaker 5: refer to bunnies from the hell, which is one nineteen.
- 3:03Speaker 4: Wow.
- 3:04Speaker 1: Okay, okay, I don't know.
- 3:11Speaker 2: I don't know how.
- 3:12Speaker 1: To even This is so far out of my mindset
- 3:16Speaker 1: of running. You know, I ran this morning, killed me.
- 3:21Speaker 1: I ran yesterday. I actually ran my three miles. I
- 3:23Speaker 1: got all of it, and you know, NonStop. I couldn't
- 3:26Speaker 1: even run fifteen yards in a road today. I can't
- 3:31Speaker 1: even imagine trying to run fifteen mounds, seven miles.
- 3:38Speaker 2: None of that.
- 3:39Speaker 1: I mean, so, what are you telling yourself? Because I
- 3:41Speaker 1: know I know when I'm talking, I'm talking to myself.
- 3:44Speaker 1: It's all negative. It's like, we can just stop. We
- 3:47Speaker 1: don't need this. I don't I'm not interested in this.
- 3:52Speaker 1: Who's causing me to do this?
- 3:53Speaker 6: I literally asked myself yesterday, are you crazy? Every time
- 4:00Speaker 6: the alarm went off at five point fifteen, I got
- 4:04Speaker 6: out of bed about five point thirty, got dressed, drove
- 4:08Speaker 6: from Nitro to u See, met up with girl gang.
- 4:12Speaker 6: It was about twelve of us and we ran ten
- 4:16Speaker 6: or eleven miles in Kanas City yesterday.
- 4:20Speaker 4: Oh wow.
- 4:21Speaker 1: Just and you say it like like it's just a
- 4:25Speaker 1: really super casual thing.
- 4:28Speaker 6: You know, we run a lot and we're on Garmin.
- 4:32Speaker 6: We keep each other accountable so we can see when
- 4:35Speaker 6: everybody's running and working out. And so I see that
- 4:38Speaker 6: Sissy got up and ran five miles and I'm like, okay,
- 4:41Speaker 6: I gotta get out here. You know. It's that kind
- 4:44Speaker 6: of thing. So it's you know, I'm not one of
- 4:47Speaker 6: those people that I am a natural runner. I hate
- 4:50Speaker 6: it every time, but it always feels good when it's over.
- 4:54Speaker 7: Oh sure, yeah, you're always glad you did it. You're
- 4:56Speaker 7: always you're sad if you don't do it, but you're
- 4:58Speaker 7: glad that when you complete some thing like that, right, exactly.
- 5:01Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 5:01Speaker 4: So I.
- 5:04Speaker 2: Don't even know if I even need to be part
- 5:06Speaker 2: of this show.
- 5:07Speaker 7: Right, you can just go out the parking lot and
- 5:09Speaker 7: wait for the second half or whatever. But so Victoria
- 5:13Speaker 7: and and Sissy, thank you so much for being on
- 5:15Speaker 7: in the flyer you gave us. That's really nice. It's
- 5:18Speaker 7: got a lot of good information. Is there somewhere on
- 5:20Speaker 7: social media they.
- 5:21Speaker 4: Could they could get they could access this. Is there
- 5:24Speaker 4: a certain paper.
- 5:26Speaker 6: You can go to Charleston Distance Run dot com. Okay,
- 5:29Speaker 6: and everything is there. There's a link to sign up
- 5:32Speaker 6: you can find out about the race history. You can
- 5:34Speaker 6: look at past races and see the times and everything.
- 5:38Speaker 4: So I'm guilty of finding that site today.
- 5:40Speaker 7: So I have some I've gotten some history about the
- 5:46Speaker 7: I'm a former teacher, so I like my research. I
- 5:50Speaker 7: like to be, you know, well prepared. But so, I,
- 5:53Speaker 7: like I said, I did do some research, and I
- 5:55Speaker 7: found that the first race, of course, this is the
- 5:57Speaker 7: fifty second running of it, correct, And the first rate
- 6:00Speaker 7: took place in nineteen seventy three and was organized by
- 6:03Speaker 7: a man named Don Cohen.
- 6:04Speaker 4: Yes, oh yeah, I got my fight story.
- 6:07Speaker 2: I like it.
- 6:08Speaker 6: I love it.
- 6:09Speaker 7: So when he designed this race, and always correct me
- 6:12Speaker 7: if I'm wrong, he wanted to include as many Charleston
- 6:15Speaker 7: neighborhoods as possible, and he involved you know, of course
- 6:18Speaker 7: he started at the state Capitol, I believe, and then
- 6:20Speaker 7: at that time it was you know, he wanted the
- 6:22Speaker 7: east end, the west side, the South Hills area. Does
- 6:26Speaker 7: today's course still follow that original router is a little
- 6:29Speaker 7: little varied.
- 6:31Speaker 5: I think it varies because at I rented him in
- 6:35Speaker 5: nineteen seventy six.
- 6:37Speaker 4: Oh wow.
- 6:40Speaker 5: At one time it was part of the regodds. Yes,
- 6:43Speaker 5: and it actually started over on at the pacifics Okay,
- 6:50Speaker 5: So it has changed a little bit because I start,
- 6:53Speaker 5: you know, at the Capitol, you know, across South Sudbury.
- 6:58Speaker 5: So it's changed a bit, not a lot.
- 7:00Speaker 4: Okay, Okay, that's awesome.
- 7:03Speaker 2: When you say it's changed.
- 7:07Speaker 1: Are are you talking just specifically how and where you
- 7:13Speaker 1: go or have you seen this huge growth in people
- 7:18Speaker 1: running and the type of people who are running.
- 7:23Speaker 6: So the race has changed. Like Sissy said, it used
- 7:26Speaker 6: to start at the Civic Center. Now it starts at
- 7:28Speaker 6: the Capitol. We do a loop actually, so you're on
- 7:32Speaker 6: canobul of Art a couple of times and at the
- 7:34Speaker 6: Capitol a couple of times. The race in I think
- 7:39Speaker 6: when it first started the first year was only a
- 7:40Speaker 6: couple of hundred people. But racing road racing itself was
- 7:45Speaker 6: exploding that time in the early seventies, and so the
- 7:48Speaker 6: second year there were like thirteen hundred people running. Wow,
- 7:52Speaker 6: And I mean elite runners. We had you know, like
- 7:54Speaker 6: Kenyons come and you know, just you know Rogers, Yeah,
- 7:58Speaker 6: a lot of you know, really well known runners. The
- 8:02Speaker 6: marshals at the first one included Jesse Owens oh wow, okay,
- 8:08Speaker 6: and Prefontaine oh wow. So it was that caliber of people.
- 8:13Speaker 6: They didn't run, but they were the marshals and so
- 8:15Speaker 6: that was just awesome. So there was a lot of
- 8:17Speaker 6: interest in it at that time. So now we have
- 8:20Speaker 6: we're almost at about six hundred people this year registered,
- 8:24Speaker 6: but runners are notoriously last minute for signing up, and
- 8:30Speaker 6: so we're really looking for to have a lot of
- 8:32Speaker 6: folks come and run this year. So we have over
- 8:37Speaker 6: three hundred signed up for the fifteen mile and I
- 8:41Speaker 6: believe almost two hundred for the five k.
- 8:44Speaker 1: So you all are not just quote runners, you all
- 8:48Speaker 1: are actually invested in its future and success.
- 8:52Speaker 4: Board members as board members, all.
- 8:54Speaker 1: Right, yeah, we are how many how many is actually
- 8:57Speaker 1: how many people are actually on the board do you know?
- 9:00Speaker 6: We have about there's probably twenty on the board and
- 9:04Speaker 6: probably a core group of twelve or so that work
- 9:09Speaker 6: on it like year round. So we meet every month
- 9:13Speaker 6: to plan this thing because it is quite an undertaking.
- 9:17Speaker 2: So you're saying that you meet every month after you've
- 9:20Speaker 2: run it.
- 9:21Speaker 6: To plan for them, to plan for it. Absolutely, that's
- 9:25Speaker 6: a lot.
- 9:25Speaker 4: That's a lot of work.
- 9:27Speaker 2: That's a huge commitment.
- 9:29Speaker 6: It is, and you know, I think we enjoy running
- 9:32Speaker 6: like I do hate it every time, but again, I
- 9:35Speaker 6: like it when I'm done.
- 9:36Speaker 2: And I mean.
- 9:36Speaker 6: Charleston, for its size, has a really sizeable running community.
- 9:42Speaker 6: I mean, you'd really be surprised. We run with Girl Gang,
- 9:46Speaker 6: which is a local running group. There's tom and Track Club.
- 9:50Speaker 6: I mean, there's so many running clubs and just people
- 9:52Speaker 6: out running. We were running in Kanos City yesterday. We
- 9:55Speaker 6: passed so many people, you know, just groups of people,
- 9:58Speaker 6: individuals running and I'm sure a lot of them are
- 10:00Speaker 6: training for the distance sun. So packet pickup is great,
- 10:04Speaker 6: you know, because you see all these people that Hey,
- 10:06Speaker 6: I see you out running in Troe, you running in
- 10:09Speaker 6: Saint Albans or whatever it is, And it's just great
- 10:13Speaker 6: to be able to connect with people and and see
- 10:15Speaker 6: people that are enjoying the same things that you do.
- 10:18Speaker 1: Well, if you all were to pass me when I
- 10:21Speaker 1: when I'm running in the morning, you would not be
- 10:24Speaker 1: able to convince me because all you're asking me to
- 10:28Speaker 1: do is run more. Oh my gosh, I don't think I.
- 10:33Speaker 2: Can have the more.
- 10:35Speaker 7: I want to see his name. I want to see
- 10:36Speaker 7: him in that that distance run come Labor Day. I
- 10:40Speaker 7: want to see it happen. But yeah, we do too,
- 10:43Speaker 7: do you start training right now to see you will
- 10:46Speaker 7: help you.
- 10:46Speaker 1: But so I could go in and run my three miles, right,
- 10:53Speaker 1: so there's a five k part of that. See what
- 10:57Speaker 1: what would bother me is as because I'm going I know,
- 11:00Speaker 1: for in fact, I'm gonna be in front of her. Okay,
- 11:03Speaker 1: I don't know that I'm gonna be in front of her.
- 11:05Speaker 1: If nothing else, I'm gonna be in front of her.
- 11:07Speaker 1: Even if I have to, I will bet on sis.
- 11:13Speaker 4: Please.
- 11:14Speaker 2: Well, here's what I'll know. Here's what I know. By
- 11:16Speaker 2: the time we hit three miles, I'm gone.
- 11:19Speaker 1: So she can go on as far as she wants
- 11:22Speaker 1: to go that far.
- 11:24Speaker 4: Oh gosh.
- 11:25Speaker 7: So so Carl kind of touched on what I was
- 11:27Speaker 7: going to talk to you, to you ladies about. But
- 11:28Speaker 7: you know this event is it's kind of nicknamed America's
- 11:32Speaker 7: fifteen Mile Challenge, right, that's what I read. So, but
- 11:35Speaker 7: it's evolved, you said, it's now you know there's two
- 11:39Speaker 7: additional events besides the fifteen mile challenge. That's that's a
- 11:42Speaker 7: solo type of deal. So you've added the events that
- 11:45Speaker 7: there's the three person relay I think you guys referred
- 11:48Speaker 7: to that a minute ago, and the five K, walk
- 11:50Speaker 7: and run. So tell us about those events. Do those
- 11:53Speaker 7: events take place before or after the main race? How
- 11:56Speaker 7: does how do those work?
- 11:57Speaker 5: Actually everybody starts at the same.
- 12:00Speaker 7: You're kidding, Okay, I thought they were different, separate events.
- 12:04Speaker 5: We all now they divide the stroke. Okay, it's like, yeah,
- 12:08Speaker 5: kind of like five k over here, yeah, fifteen over
- 12:11Speaker 5: here because there is a you know, turn turn off.
- 12:15Speaker 4: Sure, so yeah, it all starts. That's exciting.
- 12:18Speaker 5: It is very exciting.
- 12:20Speaker 4: S See, you could, you could do it.
- 12:23Speaker 2: It didn't do anything for me. I didn't all of
- 12:26Speaker 2: a sudden like the.
- 12:27Speaker 4: Yeah, my goodness.
- 12:30Speaker 2: If you were doing that for me, you lost.
- 12:35Speaker 6: A funny story last year, as Sissy mentioned, the five
- 12:41Speaker 6: k lines up on one side of the boulevard, fifteen
- 12:43Speaker 6: milers on the other. Well, there was a young woman
- 12:47Speaker 6: who got in the wrong lane. She ended up running.
- 12:51Speaker 6: She meant to be in the five k, she ended
- 12:54Speaker 6: up doing the fifteen mile. What And I was thinking
- 12:58Speaker 6: there had to be some.
- 12:58Speaker 2: Point I would have around, and he said, look.
- 13:02Speaker 4: I got the ball.
- 13:03Speaker 1: I'm sorry, or I'm just gonna stop. I made a mistake.
- 13:11Speaker 7: That's the longest for the longest five miles I've ever
- 13:14Speaker 7: ran in my year like this will never end.
- 13:16Speaker 2: Yeah that, Yeah, I'm not. I'm not. I'm not making
- 13:18Speaker 2: that mistake.
- 13:19Speaker 1: And if I do make it, like I said, my
- 13:21Speaker 1: mind will, my mind and my body will tell me
- 13:24Speaker 1: I should have been in that other lane.
- 13:27Speaker 4: I think so for sure.
- 13:28Speaker 2: And I'm walking out of that line.
- 13:30Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 13:31Speaker 1: So since you have you you have had a background
- 13:35Speaker 1: in in running track, so I know kind of where
- 13:39Speaker 1: that comes from.
- 13:42Speaker 2: You and and and they.
- 13:44Speaker 1: On the we're on the four by four relay or
- 13:47Speaker 1: four by one relay back in the day, I think
- 13:51Speaker 1: you all won the state.
- 13:55Speaker 4: Yeah, when the stated that he did, don't be sure.
- 14:01Speaker 2: So did you?
- 14:04Speaker 1: Could you ever imagine yourself going from being quote a
- 14:07Speaker 1: sprinter to actually being someone who's just going to go
- 14:11Speaker 1: out and just run, like I'm just running.
- 14:13Speaker 2: What made you start running?
- 14:16Speaker 5: Well, what made me start is back when I was
- 14:19Speaker 5: living in Maryland, I got into a group of women
- 14:22Speaker 5: and they were going to walk part of what was
- 14:25Speaker 5: considered the underground railroad. So no problem, we can walk.
- 14:30Speaker 5: But then I met a girl who was a runner
- 14:32Speaker 5: and she wanted somebody to run with. So I started
- 14:34Speaker 5: running with her and then I just continued to run,
- 14:37Speaker 5: and then after a while becomes a habit.
- 14:41Speaker 4: Yeah. So for me, running is not is a habit.
- 14:44Speaker 4: It's like people who wake.
- 14:46Speaker 5: Up in the morning, you brush your teeth, wash your face.
- 14:49Speaker 5: Running is for me nothing.
- 14:51Speaker 4: It's in your routine, right, routine. Yeah, and would have to.
- 14:55Speaker 1: Be So Victoria, what leave me alone with?
- 15:01Speaker 2: So like, what where did you? What prompted you to
- 15:04Speaker 2: get into this?
- 15:05Speaker 6: You know, my brother teases me all the time. He says,
- 15:07Speaker 6: you know, I tried to get you to run, you know,
- 15:09Speaker 6: when we were living at home growing up, and you
- 15:11Speaker 6: never would. He's like, now, you know, I can't get
- 15:14Speaker 6: you to not run. And I think when I was
- 15:16Speaker 6: in college, I my dorm was near the track. I
- 15:19Speaker 6: went to the University of Tennessee, and so the track
- 15:22Speaker 6: was like across the street and we had this thing
- 15:24Speaker 6: called the Bubble where they had all this workout equipment.
- 15:27Speaker 6: And so I just started, you know, getting into being
- 15:31Speaker 6: in shape and you know, and kind of taking better
- 15:34Speaker 6: care of myself and things like that. And then I
- 15:37Speaker 6: started running like five k's and ten k's and things
- 15:41Speaker 6: like that. And I didn't run my first half marathon
- 15:44Speaker 6: until like I think it was two thousand and four
- 15:45Speaker 6: or something like that, but like Sissy said, you know
- 15:49Speaker 6: it's something that I could do. I mean, I don't
- 15:51Speaker 6: I'm not fast. I'm not trying to get faster. I
- 15:54Speaker 6: walk a lot if I want to, sure, but it's
- 15:57Speaker 6: something that I enjoy, and so I just kind of
- 16:00Speaker 6: kept at it after that.
- 16:02Speaker 1: See if I were if I were to switched out
- 16:05Speaker 1: and started walking, I don't even want to walk fifteen mounds.
- 16:11Speaker 1: There's nothing like And for folks who are interested in
- 16:16Speaker 1: maybe participating in running starting running, don't listen to me.
- 16:20Speaker 1: Yes please, I am not your example. I promise you, Like,
- 16:28Speaker 1: I just don't see, like I don't see being able
- 16:35Speaker 1: to get my mind wrapped around fifteen mounds now in walking,
- 16:42Speaker 1: I can see me seriously talking myself out of out
- 16:46Speaker 1: of walking, probably within a mile and a half.
- 16:49Speaker 2: Like what am I doing?
- 16:50Speaker 1: Like this is I better have a huge long play
- 16:55Speaker 1: this story.
- 16:56Speaker 4: Yes you're a former NFL player.
- 17:00Speaker 1: That does not necessarily equate to loving working out. I
- 17:05Speaker 1: worked out, and anybody who is listening who knows my
- 17:07Speaker 1: workout regiment, it was. It was huge, Like it was hard.
- 17:12Speaker 1: It was not a joke, but there was there was
- 17:16Speaker 1: there was something on the end of it though, like
- 17:19Speaker 1: I needed to get the camp in shape.
- 17:20Speaker 2: I needed to be able to play and not.
- 17:22Speaker 4: Have to worry about gettator.
- 17:24Speaker 1: Yes, and I have no motivation right now for fifteen
- 17:28Speaker 1: fifteen Miles does not say, well, Carl, you know what,
- 17:31Speaker 1: that's a good job.
- 17:32Speaker 2: That ain't enough for me. That that just is not
- 17:36Speaker 2: enough for me.
- 17:37Speaker 4: I dangle and carrot in front of it. Something shirt
- 17:44Speaker 4: I got.
- 17:44Speaker 2: I got fifteen drawers full of T shirt.
- 17:47Speaker 4: Just gonna ask him about that.
- 17:49Speaker 2: And a metal.
- 17:50Speaker 1: I'm probably gonna lie to you and tell you I
- 17:52Speaker 1: did it, just as if I.
- 17:53Speaker 2: Can get the metal, I ain't gonna run it.
- 17:56Speaker 1: There's just no way what I do so shameful tell
- 18:01Speaker 1: because what I like though, what this is, this is
- 18:03Speaker 1: what I like. This is like something that I totally
- 18:06Speaker 1: am so far away from and I can't grasp. And
- 18:10Speaker 1: then most things, and I think most people who are
- 18:12Speaker 1: in sports, they think that they can grasp everything. Like
- 18:15Speaker 1: you know, if you play football, you play basketball, you
- 18:18Speaker 1: know everything.
- 18:19Speaker 2: Running is a whole another thing.
- 18:22Speaker 1: I know, you're running basketball, you're running football, you're running baseball.
- 18:26Speaker 4: Running as a sport, as a sport.
- 18:30Speaker 2: Itself, is a is a is a mind breaker.
- 18:34Speaker 1: Sure because every time I get out there, three miles
- 18:37Speaker 1: can break me.
- 18:38Speaker 2: I can't even I can't.
- 18:40Speaker 1: Yes, and I want to continue to make sure that
- 18:43Speaker 1: everybody's clear on.
- 18:44Speaker 2: That fifteen miles no shot. I'm not even going to
- 18:48Speaker 2: put it in as a goal.
- 18:50Speaker 1: There's no I can't wake up in the morning and
- 18:52Speaker 1: say I'm going fifteen miles today.
- 18:55Speaker 2: I'm rolling right back over and going to bed. I'm
- 18:58Speaker 2: going to sleep.
- 19:00Speaker 8: Oh.
- 19:01Speaker 6: People finish it in like an hour and fifteen twenty minutes.
- 19:06Speaker 2: See, that's unbelievable.
- 19:08Speaker 7: Are these are those your runners that are professional runners, right,
- 19:11Speaker 7: They're the ones that that from marathon to marathon.
- 19:14Speaker 6: Yeah, and they get at the front of the line.
- 19:16Speaker 4: Yeah, you know they're a chance.
- 19:17Speaker 6: You can see them, and I mean they run from
- 19:19Speaker 6: that first step and they are doing like, you know,
- 19:22Speaker 6: five and a half six minute See.
- 19:25Speaker 1: See, I'm seeing your You're like when you're you're defining
- 19:29Speaker 1: you're when you're discussing that, Like I can see it
- 19:31Speaker 1: in your face, like you're like, Wow, I mean they're
- 19:33Speaker 1: doing something special. I'm looking at y'all and I'm thinking, Wow,
- 19:36Speaker 1: they're doing something special. I mean, because I just it
- 19:43Speaker 1: just is a different thing. Like I'm like, I'm impressed.
- 19:47Speaker 1: To me, I'm impressed, and I hate to give this.
- 19:50Speaker 1: I hate to give her any kind of credit like
- 19:52Speaker 1: I have, but I'm impressed by the fact that she
- 19:55Speaker 1: has done this for so long because I know what
- 19:59Speaker 1: running like I've had, I've had to run it for sports,
- 20:04Speaker 1: and never ever fact that she would be doing this
- 20:11Speaker 1: like every day, all day for fifteen miles, Like who
- 20:14Speaker 1: runs fifteen miles for what?
- 20:16Speaker 2: Not?
- 20:17Speaker 4: You not me?
- 20:21Speaker 1: So I'm I'm I'm highly impressed by that reality. And
- 20:26Speaker 1: then when you watch like track and you watch like
- 20:29Speaker 1: like even like the half moun they're running that thing.
- 20:32Speaker 2: Like it's a sprint, Like it's like it's nothing.
- 20:35Speaker 1: You know, they finished, they bend over a little bit,
- 20:37Speaker 1: they walk and they're fine.
- 20:40Speaker 2: I'm dying.
- 20:41Speaker 7: That's like say something called training in run in running, how.
- 20:45Speaker 2: Do they train for that kind of stuff?
- 20:47Speaker 4: It's endurance, right, I mean, right, ladies?
- 20:50Speaker 5: Or the longer lane yea, for the longer lives, say
- 20:53Speaker 5: like the half marathons, the marathons.
- 20:56Speaker 2: How do you train for that?
- 20:58Speaker 5: Well, I've done at this point, I've done fourteen halfs
- 21:03Speaker 5: and two marathons, and so see, so it is it
- 21:10Speaker 5: is a mindset. What we do is at that point,
- 21:14Speaker 5: a lot of times you will have somebody else that's
- 21:17Speaker 5: training for a marathon or training for something, and like
- 21:20Speaker 5: uh Victoria said earlier, were part of girl gang and
- 21:24Speaker 5: you can always find somebody that will come along for
- 21:28Speaker 5: the run, even if they're not training for a marathon
- 21:31Speaker 5: or a half.
- 21:31Speaker 4: They hold you accountable.
- 21:33Speaker 5: Yeah, yeah, we hold each other accountab Where were you?
- 21:39Speaker 9: Which I beg you'll go, Oh.
- 21:50Speaker 7: My goodness, I'm going to ask a legitimate question to
- 21:54Speaker 7: these ladies. Take the focus off of your non running
- 21:57Speaker 7: abilities for a second. So Victoria, I noticed your shirt
- 22:00Speaker 7: and it's it's so pretty. I love that collar on
- 22:03Speaker 7: you and it's the Charleston Distance Run from last.
- 22:05Speaker 4: Year twenty twenty four.
- 22:07Speaker 7: Do you guys have merch available? Do you have to
- 22:09Speaker 7: actually be a part of one of the events to
- 22:11Speaker 7: purchase merchandise or can you go to the website and
- 22:14Speaker 7: do it?
- 22:15Speaker 2: Well?
- 22:15Speaker 6: You can come to our packet pick up okay, and
- 22:17Speaker 6: that will be at hat Ad Riverfront Park on Friday,
- 22:20Speaker 6: August twenty ninth this year from three to eight and
- 22:24Speaker 6: we will have souvenir shirts. We have some hats there.
- 22:28Speaker 4: Oh yeah, I see your hat now, I like that hat.
- 22:30Speaker 2: I like that hat. Yeah, be mine.
- 22:32Speaker 1: Sometimes it does cost to come on the show.
- 22:37Speaker 5: Don't let them to Charleston dist I like it a
- 22:43Speaker 5: little sass.
- 22:44Speaker 2: They need to get me a hat.
- 22:47Speaker 6: Yeah, sure, I'm gonna come down to hat Ad. You
- 22:50Speaker 6: can look at our merchandise that we have there, and
- 22:53Speaker 6: you know, hopefully we'll have more in the future that
- 22:55Speaker 6: people can just buy. But usually historically it has been
- 22:58Speaker 6: like for our runners they come into town, sure they
- 23:01Speaker 6: can look at things, but we do have extras and
- 23:04Speaker 6: stuff from previous years as well.
- 23:06Speaker 4: That's nice.
- 23:07Speaker 1: What would be what what would be the biggest challenge
- 23:12Speaker 1: for either one of you or for both of you
- 23:16Speaker 1: to try to run? Now, I mean because if you
- 23:18Speaker 1: run marathons, I meant, I mean that's as far as
- 23:22Speaker 1: typically as far as they run it, right, Is there
- 23:26Speaker 1: something out there that intrigues you to say, like, you
- 23:29Speaker 1: know what I would love to do that? Is there
- 23:32Speaker 1: something that out there there I'll go first.
- 23:36Speaker 2: Both faces was like, oh, yeah, likes.
- 23:41Speaker 6: Well, I've never done a marathon, okay, and honestly I
- 23:45Speaker 6: don't have the desire to do it, but I'm happy
- 23:49Speaker 6: with the half there. I really am so I've done
- 23:51Speaker 6: a couple of those, and I think that's probably my
- 23:54Speaker 6: length to do. So a challenge for me might be
- 23:58Speaker 6: like doing one, you know, in every state or on
- 24:02Speaker 6: every continent or something like.
- 24:03Speaker 2: That, just just just as a way of traveling.
- 24:07Speaker 6: As a way of traveling. Yeah, I went to Rio
- 24:11Speaker 6: last year and when I was there, we were at
- 24:14Speaker 6: the Christ the Redeemer statue and there was a marathon
- 24:18Speaker 6: and I was like, oh my god, I wish I
- 24:22Speaker 6: checked one off my list. So that kind of you know,
- 24:26Speaker 6: running tourism.
- 24:28Speaker 2: That's nice.
- 24:30Speaker 1: When they have these marathons, they also include shorter races
- 24:36Speaker 1: in them, right usually Okay, yeah, I didn't know that.
- 24:39Speaker 1: I didn't really know that as a fact. So when
- 24:42Speaker 1: I hear a marathon, I just flipped the page or
- 24:45Speaker 1: turned the station and I'm out.
- 24:48Speaker 6: And they know not everyone wants to run a marathon,
- 24:51Speaker 6: or you.
- 24:51Speaker 4: Know, have something for everybody.
- 24:54Speaker 6: So there's everybody, ok, and K a half marathon as
- 24:58Speaker 6: part of a race as well.
- 24:59Speaker 2: Sissy.
- 25:01Speaker 5: Victoria knows I have ran. They have what they call majors,
- 25:06Speaker 5: so the major marathons, which is Boston and New York
- 25:10Speaker 5: and London and all the majors. So I have what
- 25:13Speaker 5: they call it's called an Abbot star. So I have
- 25:16Speaker 5: my one for Chicago because it's a major. So my
- 25:20Speaker 5: goal is to run the other five. But age also
- 25:26Speaker 5: is a factor because as you age it gets a
- 25:29Speaker 5: little harder to train at that you know, twenty six
- 25:33Speaker 5: point two miles.
- 25:34Speaker 1: But that's my goal.
- 25:36Speaker 5: We'll see.
- 25:37Speaker 4: That's amazing. You didn't tell me about this.
- 25:42Speaker 2: Because it doesn't register stopping.
- 25:44Speaker 6: I'm sorry, sissy, Sorry, we love it.
- 25:54Speaker 2: Come on, Carl, there's no thought in my mind.
- 25:58Speaker 1: I'm tired because they're on show, they're talking about on
- 26:02Speaker 1: the show.
- 26:03Speaker 4: I have a legitimate question, Carl, be quiet, all right.
- 26:06Speaker 7: So ladies, you know the history of the race. It
- 26:09Speaker 7: originally took place with the storm Will Regatta in conjunction
- 26:12Speaker 7: with that, and that always happened on Labor Day weekend,
- 26:15Speaker 7: so the race continues to be on Labor Day weekend.
- 26:18Speaker 7: Is there any talk or any chance of kind of
- 26:21Speaker 7: reuniting it with the new Regotti since it's come back
- 26:24Speaker 7: and having it like over the fourth of July, have
- 26:27Speaker 7: you has the committee ever considered that or is it
- 26:31Speaker 7: ask about that?
- 26:31Speaker 6: Okay, okay, and we haven't discussed it. I don't want
- 26:38Speaker 6: to say, seriously, we haven't discussed it a lot, but
- 26:40Speaker 6: it does come up from time to time.
- 26:42Speaker 7: It's probably nice to have the spotlight just on you
- 26:44Speaker 7: guys on that weekend, right, rather than kind of being
- 26:46Speaker 7: in the shadow of a big city festival or whatever.
- 26:50Speaker 6: I'd like for us to try it, okay, see, yeah,
- 26:53Speaker 6: you know, because we'd love to have like more people participate,
- 26:57Speaker 6: and the regatta draws you know, a lot of people,
- 27:00Speaker 6: and so I hope that one year we can at least.
- 27:05Speaker 4: I'm sure the mayor would love that. I'm sure she would.
- 27:08Speaker 1: What would be the reason why they wouldn't want to
- 27:11Speaker 1: combine that?
- 27:12Speaker 5: Well, didn't it at one time?
- 27:14Speaker 4: I'm at one time?
- 27:16Speaker 6: I think maybe they stopped having the regatta.
- 27:18Speaker 5: Yes, that's what happened, and so they continued to have
- 27:22Speaker 5: the Charleston Distance.
- 27:24Speaker 4: Yeah, that never quit. That never stopped.
- 27:26Speaker 5: They never stopped. So the regatta at one time had stopped.
- 27:30Speaker 2: What would it what would what do you all think
- 27:31Speaker 2: it would take to make that I'll just say combining
- 27:38Speaker 2: the two.
- 27:40Speaker 5: I don't think it's a no necessarily a no. It
- 27:44Speaker 5: would probably be more of getting together with the city
- 27:48Speaker 5: and just you know, talking it out and you know, saying, hey,
- 27:52Speaker 5: you know, here's an idea. Just kind of throw stuff
- 27:55Speaker 5: out there just to see where it goes.
- 27:56Speaker 6: And the city is a big supporter. They're one of
- 28:00Speaker 6: our major supporters every year, and we're so thankful for
- 28:04Speaker 6: all the services that they provide, the police officers, a
- 28:09Speaker 6: lot of city services go into making this race run.
- 28:13Speaker 6: So I think that might be another consideration, Like because
- 28:15Speaker 6: the regatta is already.
- 28:16Speaker 4: A lot Yeah, I can understand that could be.
- 28:19Speaker 6: You know, just that extra manpower and capacity at that
- 28:24Speaker 6: time could be an issue too. But I think it
- 28:27Speaker 6: is worth talking about because we do get that question
- 28:29Speaker 6: a lot.
- 28:30Speaker 1: Yeah, that that that really does make sense because you know,
- 28:33Speaker 1: if they're doing all these different things, you know, now
- 28:35Speaker 1: they're spreading themselves out, that could be more of a challenge.
- 28:39Speaker 5: Yeah, because they have the bikes. They do the bikes,
- 28:41Speaker 5: and you know, they just have a lot going on.
- 28:45Speaker 2: Are there is a bike ride?
- 28:46Speaker 5: There is no it was a bike oh yeah, So
- 28:51Speaker 5: they just they have stuff going on. So, like Victoria
- 28:54Speaker 5: says it, you know.
- 28:55Speaker 7: But it could be a draw for you guys, Like
- 28:57Speaker 7: you said, I mean, since there's going to be more
- 28:59Speaker 7: out of town people here for the regatta, you know
- 29:02Speaker 7: you're gonna probably naturally get more runners to come and participate,
- 29:06Speaker 7: So I don't know, I thought that was something interesting
- 29:09Speaker 7: to talk about.
- 29:10Speaker 6: Yeah, definitely.
- 29:11Speaker 1: All right, well let's do let's take a quick break
- 29:14Speaker 1: and we will be right back.

- 30:42Speaker 3: Now back to the conversation we're gonna do.
- 30:45Speaker 1: I'm gonna do something that I'm totally uncomfortable with, which
- 30:51Speaker 1: I already have to share share my time.
- 30:54Speaker 2: With with with miss Odi. And she used me, She
- 30:57Speaker 2: usedly dogs me and treats me bad.
- 31:00Speaker 4: See what they see, Hollis is in here.
- 31:05Speaker 2: So now I'm going to allow these two young ladies.
- 31:10Speaker 1: To talk about just make sure that everybody has some
- 31:16Speaker 1: information about the distance run.
- 31:19Speaker 2: And my fear is is we.
- 31:22Speaker 1: May be here tomorrow, so hopefully we could get this
- 31:26Speaker 1: done before the show is over. But we'll see, all right, Sis, whichever.
- 31:32Speaker 2: One, whichever one of you all want to start Victoria?
- 31:35Speaker 6: Okay, yeah, So the Charleston Distance Run is taking place
- 31:38Speaker 6: on Saturday, August thirtieth. This year, we'll have packet pick
- 31:42Speaker 6: up on Friday, August twenty ninth.
- 31:44Speaker 2: This packet to pick up.
- 31:46Speaker 6: Packet pickup is when you come and you get your
- 31:48Speaker 6: what we call your swag bag. Oh okay, and you
- 31:50Speaker 6: also get your bib. So every runner or walker wears
- 31:54Speaker 6: a bib. It has a chip on it that times you.
- 31:57Speaker 6: So you'll cross mats different locations along the route. So
- 32:02Speaker 6: that's how we keep track of you on the course
- 32:05Speaker 6: and also track your time.
- 32:08Speaker 2: Oh that's cool.
- 32:08Speaker 4: Can people register actually that night in Victoria a.
- 32:12Speaker 6: Packet pick up? Okay, okay, Now it is cheaper. Now
- 32:15Speaker 6: it's going to go up a couple of times, so
- 32:17Speaker 6: you'll save about ten dollars if you go to Charleston
- 32:20Speaker 6: Distance run dot com now and sign up. But yes,
- 32:22Speaker 6: you can sign up online until noon on Friday, or
- 32:27Speaker 6: you can come in at packet pick up and sign up.
- 32:29Speaker 6: Sign up there, okay, yeah, yeah. And so packet pickup
- 32:35Speaker 6: is also a great time because all of the runners
- 32:37Speaker 6: come in so you kind of see everyone. We have
- 32:41Speaker 6: a pasta dinner there.
- 32:42Speaker 4: Oh nice.
- 32:43Speaker 6: So everyone can carve up and you can buy tickets
- 32:46Speaker 6: for family members if they aren't registered to run. But
- 32:50Speaker 6: it's a great opportunity to kind of just meet people. Again.
- 32:53Speaker 6: It's a great running community, people that you see from
- 32:55Speaker 6: time to time, so it's really great to be able
- 32:58Speaker 6: to connect with them and see people there packet pick
- 33:00Speaker 6: up and then the race starts at seven point thirty
- 33:02Speaker 6: at the Capitol. We have a short ceremony before that,
- 33:06Speaker 6: and then all the runners start at the same time
- 33:08Speaker 6: and we meet up at Lately Field.
- 33:12Speaker 5: Since anything else, so I just really wanted to really
- 33:16Speaker 5: shout out the community in general, because on top of
- 33:20Speaker 5: all the board members and things that go into the
- 33:24Speaker 5: Charleston Distance Run, we have over two hundred and fifty
- 33:27Speaker 5: people who man the water stations throughout the race. Some
- 33:33Speaker 5: of them are we have girls basketball teams and guy
- 33:38Speaker 5: basketball teams, and school teachers and people who are bank
- 33:42Speaker 5: from the bank and people who are families who've done
- 33:45Speaker 5: it for many years. We have people who have manned
- 33:48Speaker 5: the traffic at certain spots and even though we now
- 33:53Speaker 5: have ambassadors who will be doing that, they come out
- 33:57Speaker 5: every year and you know, help us with the volunteer
- 34:02Speaker 5: and so I just really wanted to shout them out
- 34:04Speaker 5: because without them it would not be possible.
- 34:07Speaker 4: Oh it's nice.
- 34:08Speaker 6: And we also want to shout out our race director,
- 34:12Speaker 6: Carol Phipps Hade. She is the first ever female race
- 34:17Speaker 6: director for the Charleston Distance Run. This is her second
- 34:22Speaker 6: year doing a fabulous job. We've you know, made lots
- 34:26Speaker 6: of changes to the race, so we're really excited about that.
- 34:31Speaker 6: I serve as the secretary and then Karen Moore is
- 34:34Speaker 6: our treasurer. So we have an all female race executive
- 34:39Speaker 6: committee for Charleston Distance Run as well. So we're really
- 34:42Speaker 6: really proud of that.
- 34:43Speaker 4: Girl power. Yeah power, you hear that, right, I hear that.
- 34:48Speaker 5: But we want to shout out our men on the
- 34:52Speaker 5: because they are amazing.
- 34:54Speaker 4: I mean, it takes everybody what it does, because I.
- 34:57Speaker 5: Mean T shirt designs we just don't, you know, we
- 35:00Speaker 5: just don't pop up. We have, you know, somebody that
- 35:02Speaker 5: does the T shirts and somebody who does the medals,
- 35:05Speaker 5: and you know, we have medical team at the end.
- 35:09Speaker 5: We just have you know, lots of people in the
- 35:11Speaker 5: community that make the Charleston Distance Rump possible.
- 35:15Speaker 6: And we wanted to be a community event. I'm sorry,
- 35:18Speaker 6: we wanted to be a community event and we want
- 35:19Speaker 6: people to come out. And you know, it really is
- 35:22Speaker 6: about health and fitness too. So it's not just about competition,
- 35:26Speaker 6: it's not just about speed. We really see running and
- 35:31Speaker 6: being active, walking, jogging, whatever you can do, just taking
- 35:34Speaker 6: that first step, it's really important to improving the health
- 35:39Speaker 6: of us as individuals and in our community. So that's
- 35:43Speaker 6: that's another big goal for the Distance Run is to
- 35:48Speaker 6: really give people opportunities and help them become you know,
- 35:51Speaker 6: healthier as well.
- 35:52Speaker 1: And I think too, to your point, if someone were
- 35:57Speaker 1: to come out and try to run or even walk
- 36:02Speaker 1: the Distance Run, I think they would they would think
- 36:08Speaker 1: to themselves, Okay, I want to keep I want to
- 36:10Speaker 1: keep doing this. This was good. I want to keep
- 36:12Speaker 1: doing this. And then at some point they're going to say,
- 36:16Speaker 1: all right, you know what, I think I'm going to
- 36:17Speaker 1: just try to run a little bit and you know,
- 36:20Speaker 1: just to see it and before you know it, now
- 36:23Speaker 1: they're running now. Once they're running now, and they're starting now,
- 36:28Speaker 1: the first thing comes to their mind is like, let's compete.
- 36:31Speaker 2: You know, I want to compete, you know.
- 36:32Speaker 1: I don't want to just I don't want to just
- 36:35Speaker 1: run and be last.
- 36:37Speaker 2: You know.
- 36:37Speaker 1: I think I've got some people up there. I think
- 36:39Speaker 1: if I train a little bit harder, I can pass it,
- 36:42Speaker 1: you know. And and I think that's an important kind
- 36:47Speaker 1: of process that I.
- 36:49Speaker 2: Think people can look at.
- 36:51Speaker 6: Just start exactly know, if you just start, get off
- 36:55Speaker 6: the couch.
- 36:56Speaker 1: Get off the couch, just get out there and just
- 37:00Speaker 1: watch people run. And because you can admire them running,
- 37:05Speaker 1: you know, if you're if you're running fifteen miles twenty
- 37:08Speaker 1: kind of if you're running above three miles, I'm impressed already.
- 37:12Speaker 1: So you know, I'm looking at you now. I will
- 37:15Speaker 1: say this, I'm too old to change, so I'm not
- 37:18Speaker 1: going to I won't necessarily I'll be impressed, but I
- 37:20Speaker 1: won't be trying to do it. But if you're young,
- 37:25Speaker 1: there's really, true, truly an opportunity for you to get
- 37:31Speaker 1: yourself off that couch, get yourself out of the house.
- 37:34Speaker 2: This is that kind of an opportunity.
- 37:37Speaker 1: This is the kind of opportunity that gives you a
- 37:40Speaker 1: chance to like, Hey, I'm out there with.
- 37:42Speaker 2: All these people with a common goal. Just finish it.
- 37:46Speaker 1: Yes, absolutely, not just first, not just just I'm just
- 37:50Speaker 1: gonna finish it. And to me, I think for a
- 37:53Speaker 1: lot of people who could benefit from it, just start it.
- 37:57Speaker 2: Just go out and just start it.
- 38:00Speaker 4: Do it right. Yeah, just do it Mike, you said.
- 38:02Speaker 6: And a great way to start is Sissy and I
- 38:04Speaker 6: are also part of a group called park Run and
- 38:08Speaker 6: it's really an international group and we are so fortunate
- 38:11Speaker 6: to have one here in Charleston.
- 38:13Speaker 2: Wow.
- 38:14Speaker 6: It meets every Saturday at Magic Island. It's a free
- 38:19Speaker 6: weekly timed five k. So a five k is three
- 38:23Speaker 6: point one miles. So we start a Magic Island, go
- 38:26Speaker 6: all the way down to the old drug Eporium. I
- 38:29Speaker 6: hate saying that, I'm miss drugging. Wow, back to Magic Island.
- 38:34Speaker 6: We take a loop around and that's three point one miles.
- 38:38Speaker 6: People are out there, running, walking, jogging, pushing strollers, walking dogs.
- 38:46Speaker 6: I mean it's about seventy people out there every week.
- 38:49Speaker 6: So you have your support community, people who are holding
- 38:51Speaker 6: you accountable, people who are looking for you, to show up.
- 38:55Speaker 6: And it's not a race. It's not a race. You
- 38:59Speaker 6: get time. I don't look to see where Sissy finished.
- 39:02Speaker 6: I look to see if I got better than I
- 39:04Speaker 6: was last week.
- 39:06Speaker 4: You're competing against yourself, that's.
- 39:07Speaker 6: Right, that's it, and you're in community to do that.
- 39:10Speaker 6: So I want to invite everyone out to park Run
- 39:14Speaker 6: every Saturday. People are there, so you have a community
- 39:18Speaker 6: you can meet. Where did you say it starts at
- 39:20Speaker 6: Magic Magic Eyeland one time at eight o'clock and then
- 39:23Speaker 6: it switches when the time changes. But for right now
- 39:26Speaker 6: eight o'clock.
- 39:27Speaker 2: Okay, so you asked that question as if you might show.
- 39:30Speaker 7: Up for you, I'll think about it.
- 39:36Speaker 4: I'll cheer them.
- 39:40Speaker 1: Christe, I was I was going to say, Okay, if
- 39:44Speaker 1: Lisa shows up, I'll show up.
- 39:46Speaker 4: I do walk.
- 39:47Speaker 6: Uh.
- 39:48Speaker 7: The only problem for me, and this is probably ridiculous,
- 39:51Speaker 7: I'm sure, but I have need issues. So you know,
- 39:53Speaker 7: for me, jogging and running is it's hard, not the
- 39:56Speaker 7: endurance part. I think I would be fine with that.
- 39:58Speaker 2: Carl. I don't know about that high, but I can.
- 40:00Speaker 4: I can walk.
- 40:01Speaker 7: I mean I walk long distances you know in Kanas
- 40:04Speaker 7: cities where I live. But but kudos to you guys.
- 40:06Speaker 7: I mean I wish I could do that, you know,
- 40:09Speaker 7: I think it's amazing and I'm impressed.
- 40:12Speaker 4: We have walkers. Well, so.
- 40:16Speaker 2: That was not here.
- 40:18Speaker 5: That's not that's not a get out of because actually
- 40:22Speaker 5: in our group of Girl Gang, we have walkers. We
- 40:26Speaker 5: have a tail walker. Actually, uh, what.
- 40:30Speaker 2: Is the tail walker?
- 40:31Speaker 5: So the tail walker finishes last in the Charleston distance run,
- 40:35Speaker 5: so nobody else has to oh wow, so.
- 40:40Speaker 2: Yeah, sign up. But I can be as far as
- 40:48Speaker 2: I could.
- 40:48Speaker 1: Be, That's not how it works as long as I'm lasting.
- 40:54Speaker 5: No, you have to at least be close to the
- 40:56Speaker 5: person that's in front of you.
- 40:57Speaker 1: See, that's that's what that's called, is a family rule
- 41:00Speaker 1: right there. You don't have the ability to change that.
- 41:06Speaker 1: All that matters is I'm last. That's all that matters.
- 41:09Speaker 4: There is a course limit.
- 41:11Speaker 1: So okay, so I'm last, and the course is going
- 41:14Speaker 1: to say, what well are you?
- 41:16Speaker 2: You st you short?
- 41:18Speaker 1: You were short of you came in too fast, of
- 41:21Speaker 1: your slow?
- 41:25Speaker 4: What did you just say?
- 41:29Speaker 5: Anyway, we welcome every pace, every if you walk, we
- 41:35Speaker 5: have walkers we have through the Girl Gang, we have
- 41:39Speaker 5: this thing. We don't leave anybody behind. So if you
- 41:41Speaker 5: come out on a long run, so we usually do
- 41:43Speaker 5: them on Sundays. You're not getting left behind. Somebody is
- 41:47Speaker 5: going to be there with you. So you know, people say, well,
- 41:51Speaker 5: I don't want to do that. I don't want to
- 41:52Speaker 5: slow anybody down. That's just what we do. It's a community,
- 41:56Speaker 5: you know, so you're helping.
- 41:59Speaker 2: We will get it involved in it. Oh that's cool.
- 42:01Speaker 4: Because people and the camaraderie of it.
- 42:03Speaker 7: I mean it's got to be just nice just to
- 42:06Speaker 7: see that, you know, get together with your friends and
- 42:08Speaker 7: get some fresh air and yeah.
- 42:11Speaker 6: And I mean we have new people joining. We have
- 42:13Speaker 6: people when they come into town they are looking for
- 42:17Speaker 6: a group to run with, and so they'll come out
- 42:19Speaker 6: and run with us on Sunday because they have.
- 42:21Speaker 7: Their own group when they're in their own hometown, so
- 42:24Speaker 7: they just find yours.
- 42:25Speaker 6: Ye. So we have a lot of tourists that come
- 42:27Speaker 6: and run with us. And there's a tail walker for
- 42:30Speaker 6: the Chalceton distance run and there's always a tail walker,
- 42:33Speaker 6: which is actually I think where we got the idea
- 42:35Speaker 6: for park run. So for people who come out on Saturday,
- 42:38Speaker 6: I promise you you will not be last.
- 42:46Speaker 2: I thought we were going to go for it, but.
- 42:57Speaker 4: We've been together doing this for a long time.
- 43:00Speaker 1: Well, you know, I'm I'm really super proud of both
- 43:06Speaker 1: of you all for the simple fact that.
- 43:11Speaker 2: Not beyond the past, beyond the running, just the.
- 43:15Speaker 1: Whole concept of all of the things that you're it's
- 43:18Speaker 1: still like reaching out to people to get them part
- 43:22Speaker 1: of something. I think that I think that is that
- 43:27Speaker 1: is critical today for you got people who don't know
- 43:31Speaker 1: what to do, and they don't want to do anything
- 43:34Speaker 1: without somebody, and running sometimes can be that thing that
- 43:39Speaker 1: you all are using to bring them in. And I
- 43:43Speaker 1: think that's you know, I think that's something that's really
- 43:45Speaker 1: pretty special.
- 43:46Speaker 7: Especially with today's social and political climent. This is something
- 43:50Speaker 7: that is so needed, is group community partnerships, you know,
- 43:56Speaker 7: being able to get together and and you know, just
- 43:59Speaker 7: take a break from everything.
- 44:00Speaker 4: Absolutely, I think we all need that we do.
- 44:03Speaker 6: There are so many people at home who may not
- 44:06Speaker 6: really have a group of friends. I mean, people who
- 44:09Speaker 6: have friends are really fortunate, right and just for a
- 44:12Speaker 6: number of reasons. Sometimes we lose track of people. We're
- 44:15Speaker 6: in a new city whatever, you know, and people are
- 44:18Speaker 6: looking for connection, sure, and so this is a great way.
- 44:21Speaker 6: And again you don't have to be fast. You don't
- 44:23Speaker 6: have to run, you know, it's just a great group
- 44:25Speaker 6: of people. After park run, we meet at Mia Kaupa
- 44:29Speaker 6: on big Ley Avenue. Lots of opportunities just to you know,
- 44:46Speaker 6: be with people, to meet people, to to get active,
- 44:51Speaker 6: to get healthy, and I mean, it's just it's a
- 44:54Speaker 6: lot of fun. It's a lot of fun.
- 44:56Speaker 4: Sounds like it.
- 44:57Speaker 2: All right, Well, we're gonna let We're gonna let you.
- 45:00Speaker 1: We we don't have much time left, but we're gonna let
- 45:02Speaker 1: you to go for since you've given us enough information
- 45:06Speaker 1: enough for me to know that I don't run and
- 45:08Speaker 1: run with either one.
- 45:09Speaker 2: If you are.
- 45:11Speaker 1: But hopefully, but hopefully it'll inspire a whole lot of
- 45:15Speaker 1: other people who are looking for something to do.
- 45:17Speaker 2: So I do appreciate you both coming. Thank you, appreciate.
- 45:22Speaker 1: Switching conversations drastically. Yes, all right, let me just I'm
- 45:29Speaker 1: gonna start this way, Lisa with you. All right, So,
- 45:32Speaker 1: typically when you when camp starts and you're you're everybody's
- 45:39Speaker 1: in camp, your first scrimmage is usually something along the
- 45:45Speaker 1: lines against the backups. You know, you don't go against
- 45:51Speaker 1: your first team guys, and so you know, so I'm
- 45:56Speaker 1: my assumption is Shador who I think played extremely well.
- 46:02Speaker 1: And and the question that I have with that is
- 46:08Speaker 1: was that against.
- 46:09Speaker 2: The first team.
- 46:11Speaker 1: I'm going to assume if he was there, if he started,
- 46:15Speaker 1: then he probably faced the first team, because the first
- 46:19Speaker 1: team will be the you know, the first group will
- 46:21Speaker 1: be out there. They could be out there for a
- 46:23Speaker 1: couple of series. They could be out there for a quarter,
- 46:28Speaker 1: maybe half, and then they're pretty much done. But it
- 46:33Speaker 1: appears though that he can play at this level if
- 46:41Speaker 1: all things are equal, and he's playing against the top rated.
- 46:45Speaker 7: Guy right right, And that remains to be seen, because
- 46:48Speaker 7: I'm not sure. I couldn't I can give you his numbers.
- 46:52Speaker 7: You know, he had a strong showing and this was
- 46:54Speaker 7: against the Carolina Panthers. He was fourteen for twenty three
- 46:58Speaker 7: passing for one hundred and thirty eight yards. He had
- 47:00Speaker 7: two TD passes and nineteen yards rushing on four attempts,
- 47:04Speaker 7: which is not horrible for his first time out there
- 47:07Speaker 7: in an an NFL atmosphere. But I think time will
- 47:11Speaker 7: tell their second scrimmage game or scrimmage preseason game. It
- 47:15Speaker 7: is scrimmage in a way, right Their second season game
- 47:18Speaker 7: is preseason is going to be against the Eagles.
- 47:21Speaker 4: So I'm thinking if he can.
- 47:24Speaker 7: Repeat this performance, because I'm thinking the Cleveland staff probably
- 47:28Speaker 7: like what they saw, and he's going to get a
- 47:30Speaker 7: shot against the Philadelphia Eagles in that game. If he
- 47:33Speaker 7: can continue this type of performance, then you know they've
- 47:40Speaker 7: got some quarterback controversy in Cleveland.
- 47:42Speaker 2: I think so. But here's what is intriguing to me.
- 47:48Speaker 1: If you're competing against somebody's second team, right, you know, rookies,
- 47:56Speaker 1: basically that's not really the first team. That's not really
- 48:03Speaker 1: what you're going to see. Now, I'm not gonna make
- 48:05Speaker 1: that I'm not making and I'm not really trying to
- 48:07Speaker 1: make the case that he can't play up to that level.
- 48:11Speaker 1: I'm just what I don't know is who he's actually
- 48:13Speaker 1: playing against. And no matter how long this goes, until
- 48:17Speaker 1: you get to to the realization of can he handle
- 48:23Speaker 1: the pressure? Can he get hit? And because he can
- 48:26Speaker 1: avoid it, he can avoid the hits, which is great,
- 48:28Speaker 1: which is great, great, great, great? What if he gets hit?
- 48:32Speaker 1: Has he been hit yet?
- 48:34Speaker 7: And that's something I was going to bring up in
- 48:36Speaker 7: my next next piece of this conversation, But it's not
- 48:40Speaker 7: so much I think what the coaching staff, It's not
- 48:42Speaker 7: so much.
- 48:43Speaker 4: The numbers. The numbers are good, right, the numbers are impressive.
- 48:46Speaker 7: I think it's what the staff saw of his performance
- 48:49Speaker 7: on the field past the.
- 48:51Speaker 2: Numbers, leadership and stuff.
- 48:53Speaker 4: They liked.
- 48:53Speaker 7: They liked that he was decisive, that was something that
- 48:56Speaker 7: he could he was he was doing well with he
- 48:59Speaker 7: threw the ball.
- 49:00Speaker 2: I can do really well.
- 49:02Speaker 7: They did state and this was just what the staff said,
- 49:05Speaker 7: And this is something I want you to kind of
- 49:06Speaker 7: explain in Layman Layman's terms to me, but they said
- 49:10Speaker 7: he needs to handle pressure, which you just brought that up.
- 49:13Speaker 7: The other thing they mentioned was something about cleaning up
- 49:16Speaker 7: his pocket presence. Explain that like in Layman's terms.
- 49:21Speaker 1: As a as a defensive player, I'll describe what I
- 49:24Speaker 1: can assume that that that's what he what what they're saying. Okay, there,
- 49:29Speaker 1: when you're in the pocket, there's a there's a calmness
- 49:33Speaker 1: that you have to have because there's people coming from
- 49:36Speaker 1: the right, from the left, up the middle. Your presence,
- 49:41Speaker 1: if you panic and you're moving around, you're you're you're
- 49:44Speaker 1: jerking around kind of trying to find a place to go,
- 49:46Speaker 1: and then you still throw the ball and you throw it.
- 49:48Speaker 2: Great, that's good.
- 49:49Speaker 1: But you've got to be able to stay in the
- 49:50Speaker 1: pocket so that the route itself can develop.
- 49:53Speaker 2: Okay, and you can still stay in the post.
- 49:55Speaker 7: Do you have to be able to see the whole
- 49:56Speaker 7: field is what you're saying, and not freak out.
- 49:59Speaker 1: And not yes, not leave the pockets just because you
- 50:02Speaker 1: feel some pressure. Right, most quarterbacks today, you know when
- 50:07Speaker 1: you start talking about that running quarterback, that running quarterback
- 50:11Speaker 1: has to have still has to have the ability to
- 50:13Speaker 1: be able to be in the pocket. Okay, find figure
- 50:17Speaker 1: out what the defense is, figure out where I should
- 50:19Speaker 1: throw the ball before I have to move. Now obviously,
- 50:23Speaker 1: if there's a blitz and somebody's coming right up the middle, yeah,
- 50:25Speaker 1: you got to move right away. I think what they're
- 50:28Speaker 1: trying to get him to do is to maybe stay
- 50:31Speaker 1: just in the pocket, read it just a little a
- 50:33Speaker 1: tad bit longer and see and anticipate where the opening
- 50:39Speaker 1: is going to be.
- 50:39Speaker 7: So for you, which which would be your more wanted
- 50:44Speaker 7: quality in your quarterback on the field. Would it be
- 50:48Speaker 7: the decision making in the in the being able to
- 50:50Speaker 7: throw the ball accurately or is it more of the
- 50:53Speaker 7: pocket presence and pressure handling I mean, or you have
- 50:57Speaker 7: to have all of it.
- 50:58Speaker 1: I think you have to have all of it. But
- 50:59Speaker 1: if I had to pick one, I would probably have pocket.
- 51:02Speaker 1: To be able to handle being in the pocket. The
- 51:05Speaker 1: pocket presence, okay, because when you run, you're you're you're
- 51:11Speaker 1: just running. As an athlete. Now that can that can
- 51:13Speaker 1: show up, but at some point in time being a quarterback,
- 51:18Speaker 1: you have to be able to be in the pocket, right,
- 51:20Speaker 1: find a receiver, throw the ball him, catch it, and
- 51:23Speaker 1: you keep.
- 51:24Speaker 2: You have to be able to do that. You can't
- 51:26Speaker 2: just run.
- 51:28Speaker 4: So he's not in the zone yet, as Dante would say.
- 51:31Speaker 2: No, I don't think. I don't I don't think.
- 51:33Speaker 7: He's he's and he's young, and he's a rookie, so
- 51:35Speaker 7: he shouldn't be in the zone.
- 51:36Speaker 1: Really, And he understands his athleticism and his ability to run,
- 51:43Speaker 1: and he can and I'm not taking away from his
- 51:45Speaker 1: ability to throw, because he can throw the ball, but
- 51:48Speaker 1: what he can trust all the time is his ability
- 51:52Speaker 1: to run the ball to get out of the pocket
- 51:55Speaker 1: and go. You've got to stay in that pocket. You
- 52:00Speaker 1: got to find a way to stay in that pocket, sure,
- 52:02Speaker 1: and find that guy that is open. Because you're just
- 52:08Speaker 1: a running back. If you're going to keep running.
- 52:10Speaker 4: Yeah, well, it's something I wanted to bring.
- 52:13Speaker 7: I mean, he's been the talk, of course, you know,
- 52:15Speaker 7: dominated all of the shows on ESPN because of the
- 52:18Speaker 7: controversy with the draft and his dad in DIONSO. But
- 52:22Speaker 7: you know, there were thirty I'm sorry thirteen quarterbacks or
- 52:25Speaker 7: drafted in April. Eleven of them have suited up for
- 52:29Speaker 7: their respective teams during the preseason, which I thought was
- 52:32Speaker 7: pretty impressive. I mean, because that doesn't always happen with
- 52:35Speaker 7: your rookie quarterbox.
- 52:36Speaker 1: No, no it doesn't. And what I'm thinking has happened,
- 52:41Speaker 1: and I can't confirm this. You might have looked this up.
- 52:45Speaker 1: Most of these guys who were drafted in the first
- 52:47Speaker 1: round are probably guys that they are hoping or expecting
- 52:52Speaker 1: to be Zerios.
- 52:53Speaker 4: Stars this year.
- 52:54Speaker 1: Compete, okay, because even if I can compete against you,
- 52:59Speaker 1: I'm making you better.
- 53:01Speaker 2: So can I compete to early?
- 53:02Speaker 7: Isn't that early expectation of a rookie to to expect
- 53:05Speaker 7: them to go? I mean I've always like had the perception,
- 53:10Speaker 7: I guess of the draft is you usually have a
- 53:13Speaker 7: quarterback that you have a lot of confidence in, but
- 53:15Speaker 7: kind of like an Aaron Rodgers Jordan Love situation where
- 53:18Speaker 7: you know that the end is near. You know Father
- 53:21Speaker 7: Tom is going to be, you know, victorious in the end,
- 53:24Speaker 7: and so you're planning for future endeavors. Are these are
- 53:29Speaker 7: these tepics that desperate with their quarter present quarterbacks.
- 53:32Speaker 1: I think what they what they're seeing is they're seeing
- 53:35Speaker 1: a quarterback, a potential quarterback that they can do a
- 53:40Speaker 1: lot with.
- 53:41Speaker 2: And I can't pass that up because.
- 53:43Speaker 6: Right I'm on the gate.
- 53:45Speaker 2: Well, I might be the quarterback now.
- 53:47Speaker 1: And let's say I'm seven years in and I'm I'm
- 53:51Speaker 1: good enough to start, I'm good enough to lead us
- 53:54Speaker 1: to the playoffs. But we haven't gotten past that. And
- 53:57Speaker 1: there's a quarterback in the draft aft that's pretty good,
- 54:03Speaker 1: and we've got an opportunity to get him. I can't
- 54:07Speaker 1: wait till the second round. He's gonna be gone, so
- 54:10Speaker 1: I've got to get him first round. So now I'm
- 54:12Speaker 1: getting him first round. And now I feel like I'm
- 54:17Speaker 1: in a situation where if my if my returning quarterback
- 54:22Speaker 1: is solid, he can he can get a year under
- 54:26Speaker 1: his belt of watching, getting some experience. Then that second year, now,
- 54:31Speaker 1: now we got some true competition. But you could also
- 54:34Speaker 1: have that competition in the very first year. Okay, because
- 54:38Speaker 1: if you because Cleveland has it, they do have a
- 54:41Speaker 1: starting quarterback Joe Yeah.
- 54:44Speaker 4: Yeah, and he was pretty secure.
- 54:45Speaker 7: But now you know, since Shudor and if he repeats
- 54:48Speaker 7: this performance, you know, if if they go in against
- 54:51Speaker 7: the Eagles and he can do this or even better
- 54:53Speaker 7: than what he did, you know you're gonna have some talk.
- 54:56Speaker 2: But here's the question.
- 54:57Speaker 4: More talk.
- 54:58Speaker 2: Who's getting the most.
- 55:03Speaker 1: Or I'm thinking Shador is hitting the most play why
- 55:05Speaker 1: because we already know what we already know what he
- 55:07Speaker 1: can do.
- 55:08Speaker 4: We know we don't know what this preseason and you
- 55:10Speaker 4: don't want to get your.
- 55:10Speaker 2: Story, don't want to get him.
- 55:11Speaker 7: We don't want to They need to be wrapped, you know,
- 55:13Speaker 7: in bubble wrap at this point. I mean the way
- 55:15Speaker 7: they some of them have been hurt, I mean some
- 55:17Speaker 7: of the players in the preseason games. But I just
- 55:20Speaker 7: find it, I don't know, I mean, to me, that
- 55:23Speaker 7: seemed like a high number for the thirteen drafted that
- 55:26Speaker 7: eleven have already had a chance to get out there
- 55:28Speaker 7: and play.
- 55:30Speaker 1: Is most teams are going to put people are going
- 55:33Speaker 1: to put the rookies out in the first preseason game. Okay,
- 55:36Speaker 1: they're going to put them out just as as many
- 55:40Speaker 1: as they possibly can.
- 55:41Speaker 7: Okay, just so they can get in the value wills
- 55:44Speaker 7: and make some decisions about we don't want to.
- 55:46Speaker 1: We don't want our starting quarterback to play in the
- 55:48Speaker 1: first preseason game.
- 55:49Speaker 11: I'm going to throw something out here at you guys,
- 55:51Speaker 11: do Aaron Rodgers forty one years old, Kirk Cousins thirty
- 55:56Speaker 11: six years old, Matthew Stafford thirty six years old, Russell
- 56:00Speaker 11: Wilson thirty six years old, Geno Smith thirty four years old.
- 56:04Speaker 11: A lot of these guys, if they haven't retired recently,
- 56:07Speaker 11: they're getting ready there right there. This is rookie season
- 56:10Speaker 11: every year for the next few years in the NFL.
- 56:13Speaker 1: And and if you're the if you're if you're that
- 56:15Speaker 1: quarterback that's in the draft, you're happy.
- 56:18Speaker 2: Yeah, absolutely, Because here's here's the other thing.
- 56:20Speaker 1: I would love one year to learn from one of
- 56:24Speaker 1: those names. I'd like to watch them, even if they're
- 56:28Speaker 1: at the end of their at the end of the rope,
- 56:30Speaker 1: they're gonna they're mentally they're gonna show you something. They're
- 56:34Speaker 1: gonna show you how to make this drastic decision in
- 56:38Speaker 1: the heat of the pocket.
- 56:41Speaker 2: That's something that you can't really coach.
- 56:44Speaker 1: I mean, I would love And I had the opportunity
- 56:46Speaker 1: as a as a defensive back to see a guy
- 56:49Speaker 1: who had played at LSU, who had been.
- 56:51Speaker 2: Starting with the Vikings for tons of years.
- 56:54Speaker 1: I got a chance to see him for a couple
- 56:56Speaker 1: of years and see how he operated, how he handled himself.
- 57:00Speaker 1: And I marked that right because like I'm thinking, this
- 57:04Speaker 1: is what you know, this is what a starting quarter
- 57:07Speaker 1: corner looks like.
- 57:09Speaker 2: I need to I need to mimic that.
- 57:12Speaker 11: So there's some kind of change that's happened, I feel
- 57:14Speaker 11: like in the last ten or fifteen years too, because
- 57:16Speaker 11: it's not like it used to be where Aaron Rodgers
- 57:20Speaker 11: comes after Brett Favre or Tom Brady comes after Drew bledsoe,
- 57:25Speaker 11: you know, they were kind of in the in the
- 57:26Speaker 11: wings waiting.
- 57:27Speaker 2: For a few years. Absolutely, that doesn't seem to be
- 57:29Speaker 2: the case. And I think especially Cleveland, and I.
- 57:33Speaker 1: Think I think that's a bad yeah, And I think
- 57:38Speaker 1: that's a bad thing because I really truly have to
- 57:43Speaker 1: say that seeing somebody watching somebody mimicking what it what
- 57:48Speaker 1: they're doing a little bit and taking some of mine
- 57:51Speaker 1: into it, I think is truly important at that level
- 57:56Speaker 1: because playing college ball is not playing pro ball. So
- 58:00Speaker 1: what you learned is not what you're going to necessarily.
- 58:04Speaker 7: You know, it's obviously it's a whole differences afferent animal.
- 58:09Speaker 11: Don't you think it maybe also has something to do
- 58:12Speaker 11: it maybe contributes to longevity there too. When we spend
- 58:15Speaker 11: two or three years watching the number one guy, when
- 58:18Speaker 11: you're maybe the number two guy that gets to come
- 58:20Speaker 11: in later in the game or when somebody needs a
- 58:22Speaker 11: blow for a play or two, you're not playing every
- 58:26Speaker 11: single down. As soon as you're drafted your first second year,
- 58:29Speaker 11: you got a little bit of time to kind of
- 58:31Speaker 11: get used to it, get used to that level of play,
- 58:34Speaker 11: and I would have to think that would make you
- 58:36Speaker 11: have potentially no longer career with you know, notwithstanding any
- 58:40Speaker 11: injuries or anything like that.
- 58:43Speaker 1: Here's the problem though, when you come in, Okay, I'm
- 58:46Speaker 1: a guy who's a seventh round pick, right like, I
- 58:48Speaker 1: want to play now, sure you know what I'm saying.
- 58:51Speaker 7: I want to and you want a chance to show
- 58:52Speaker 7: that you belong. So you belong on that field.
- 58:55Speaker 2: So imagine coming as a second rounder or a first rounder.
- 58:59Speaker 2: You you're not thinking you're sitting.
- 59:01Speaker 1: Yeah, you know, and they're paying me all that kind
- 59:03Speaker 1: of money what I'm making because here's the thing, I
- 59:07Speaker 1: could be making more than you, Lisa, because I came
- 59:09Speaker 1: in this year, you've been you're at the end of
- 59:12Speaker 1: your contract. I'm making more than you. That makes me
- 59:15Speaker 1: think anyway, that I'm already better than you. You're paying
- 59:19Speaker 1: I'm paying You're paying me more than what they're paying you. Yeah,
- 59:22Speaker 1: that's should be playing.
- 59:23Speaker 2: Yeah, that's in your head.
- 59:25Speaker 7: Well, and I'm going to just really quick just switch
- 59:28Speaker 7: lanes here. We're still talking preseason football. But you know,
- 59:32Speaker 7: the past week and we've talked about this in the thread, Carl,
- 59:35Speaker 7: the injuries, Yes, the severity of the injuries. I mean,
- 59:38Speaker 7: you know you had that Ravens cornerback. I think it was,
- 59:42Speaker 7: you know, taking off the field in an air cast.
- 59:47Speaker 7: For me, I think it's the for the players, you know,
- 59:51Speaker 7: it can be for the unlucky ones, it's a devastating
- 59:53Speaker 7: ending to their career or to their their their year,
- 59:57Speaker 7: possibly their career before or you know, the fans even
- 1:00:01Speaker 7: know who they are, like what you're saying, they're out
- 1:00:03Speaker 7: there fighting for their livelihood in these preseason games and
- 1:00:06Speaker 7: they're gonna hurt They're going to hit people hard, and
- 1:00:09Speaker 7: I don't know, I don't want to say they have
- 1:00:11Speaker 7: the intention of hurting people, but they definitely have the
- 1:00:13Speaker 7: intention of making a name for themselves right right, And
- 1:00:17Speaker 7: that's a dangerous situation.
- 1:00:19Speaker 2: It's to me, I mean, think about it.
- 1:00:21Speaker 1: You're you're you're you're a first round draft pick, which
- 1:00:24Speaker 1: I was not, and you go in with the expectation
- 1:00:28Speaker 1: of playing. You're going to do any and everything that
- 1:00:32Speaker 1: you possibly can to show that you.
- 1:00:36Speaker 4: Belong in there, which can be over the top, which.
- 1:00:38Speaker 2: Could be over the top, It definitely can be.
- 1:00:41Speaker 4: Over the top unsafe.
- 1:00:42Speaker 2: Yes, Okay, you're you're risking that.
- 1:00:44Speaker 4: That's kind of my point.
- 1:00:46Speaker 1: Okay, you're that physical guy and coming in and you're
- 1:00:49Speaker 1: going to try to make up a stance so that
- 1:00:52Speaker 1: you're starting.
- 1:00:53Speaker 7: So do we need this many preseason games? Then if
- 1:00:56Speaker 7: that's the case, do we really?
- 1:00:57Speaker 1: But it could happen in practice, Well, it's sure can
- 1:01:00Speaker 1: can happen in practice because you've got scrimmages in practice.
- 1:01:04Speaker 7: But the likelihood when they know the camera's on and
- 1:01:06Speaker 7: the fans are watching and they're making a name for themselves,
- 1:01:10Speaker 7: you know, I'm not pointing fingers at anybody. Accidents happen
- 1:01:14Speaker 7: and players get hurt. But I do feel the atmosphere
- 1:01:18Speaker 7: at a preseason game is more conducive to people. Especially
- 1:01:22Speaker 7: you've got brand new kids out of college that they
- 1:01:25Speaker 7: really don't understand the game, yet they're out there, you know,
- 1:01:27Speaker 7: feeling their way. And you've got some veteran players out
- 1:01:30Speaker 7: there probably that have been on the roster trying to
- 1:01:32Speaker 7: stay on the roster and they're making a name for themselves.
- 1:01:36Speaker 4: It can be a recipe for disaster.
- 1:01:38Speaker 1: It can be, But I think that just comes that
- 1:01:42Speaker 1: comes with with with football. I think it comes with
- 1:01:45Speaker 1: football at any level, you know, and it comes in it.
- 1:01:49Speaker 1: I think it's I think it's rooted in every sport
- 1:01:52Speaker 1: with the idea of the new guy coming in wanting
- 1:01:55Speaker 1: to play.
- 1:01:55Speaker 2: Sure, and I'm giving you everything.
- 1:01:57Speaker 1: Now, football is a little bit way more physical than
- 1:02:00Speaker 1: any of the other sports.
- 1:02:02Speaker 2: We can make that case.
- 1:02:03Speaker 1: And what you have to do to impress, Like for
- 1:02:06Speaker 1: me to have to impress the defensive coordinator and the
- 1:02:10Speaker 1: head coach coach, I got to be able to cover
- 1:02:13Speaker 1: and I got to be able to hit somebody.
- 1:02:15Speaker 4: Is it preseason four or three?
- 1:02:16Speaker 2: Matt, It used to be four.
- 1:02:18Speaker 11: I think it's are we down to two now?
- 1:02:20Speaker 2: I think I think you're right.
- 1:02:21Speaker 11: I think it's just too yeah, yeah, because they added
- 1:02:24Speaker 11: that seventeenth game, and now I think it down two.
- 1:02:28Speaker 2: What did you do? Well? Are you really doing that swap?
- 1:02:31Speaker 11: Well, here's the numbers part of it though, too. If
- 1:02:34Speaker 11: you think about like the NBA, you got what maybe
- 1:02:36Speaker 11: twelve guys on your roster, eleven twelve, even major League Baseball,
- 1:02:41Speaker 11: I mean you're only like around thirty or so, You've
- 1:02:43Speaker 11: got a fifty or fifty six man roster. I think
- 1:02:46Speaker 11: for the NFL, you got a lot of guys. You
- 1:02:49Speaker 11: got to figure out what can they do? And some
- 1:02:51Speaker 11: of that you're not going to be able to figure
- 1:02:52Speaker 11: out in practice. Right, So they keep gotting back this preseason.
- 1:02:56Speaker 11: But I mean, is it really I mean, is it
- 1:02:59Speaker 11: doing them.
- 1:02:59Speaker 1: In a well, think about it this way. This is
- 1:03:02Speaker 1: how I This might be bad, but this is how
- 1:03:04Speaker 1: I look at it. If I've already given you seven
- 1:03:09Speaker 1: hundred million dollars, five of us guaranteed, and I'm bringing
- 1:03:16Speaker 1: Lisa in and she plays the same position as you,
- 1:03:19Speaker 1: I already know where you're gonna be less, I pay
- 1:03:23Speaker 1: her more than you. If I pay her more than you,
- 1:03:26Speaker 1: then I know where she's gonna be. You gonna you
- 1:03:28Speaker 1: don't have to worry about getting hurt. You'll be over
- 1:03:30Speaker 1: on the side.
- 1:03:31Speaker 2: I mean, yes, I think.
- 1:03:33Speaker 1: Where they are now or they are protecting trying to
- 1:03:37Speaker 1: protect those guys who are making that money as much
- 1:03:40Speaker 1: as they possibly can.
- 1:03:42Speaker 7: And it goes back to our esteemed guest last week, Stirling.
- 1:03:46Speaker 7: You know when I pose the same question to him,
- 1:03:48Speaker 7: what do you think of preseason? And he basically answered,
- 1:03:51Speaker 7: and this isn't exact words, maybe it is, I don't know,
- 1:03:54Speaker 7: but I can't remember, but he did say, if you
- 1:03:57Speaker 7: don't think every single move that this league makes is
- 1:04:00Speaker 7: not related or about money, yeah, then you just you're sadly,
- 1:04:05Speaker 7: you know you're miscotted. It's all about money. It's not
- 1:04:08Speaker 7: about anything else but money.
- 1:04:09Speaker 2: It's true.
- 1:04:10Speaker 1: It's true, and and it's and it's shameful because shame
- 1:04:13Speaker 1: The money is already so good. Why are you Why
- 1:04:17Speaker 1: are you worried about it that much more? It's just
- 1:04:20Speaker 1: it's just a shame, you know. But hey, that's the
- 1:04:23Speaker 1: game I played and we all love.
- 1:04:28Speaker 7: So Carl's late for a marathon. He's gonna get out
- 1:04:31Speaker 7: of here, all right, make marathon Tom.
- 1:04:33Speaker 2: There's no chance on that one. Ladies and gentlemen.
