- 0:21system that restricted faith and elevated the
- 0:25state above God. Tonight, We explore Fidel Castro's
- 0:30rise to power, the shift from hope to control,
- 0:33and the impact of Marxist -Leninist ideology
- 0:36on the Christian church. This is Episode 5 Cuba,
- 0:40the Revolution, and the Church. Castro, Communism,
- 0:46and Religious Freedom. Let's begin. Welcome back
- 0:53to the Voices of Life. I'm Pastor David. We are
- 0:56going through our When Freedom Dies series, and
- 0:59in our last episode we explored the Soviet Union
- 1:02and what happened to Christianity under the state
- 1:04atheism. Tonight, we turn to the Caribbean, to
- 1:09a nation whose revolution promised equality but
- 1:14delivered control. This is Cuba, the revolution
- 1:18and the church, Castro, communism, and religious
- 1:23freedom. Let's begin. In 1959, Fidel Castro stood
- 1:28before the Cuban people as a hero. He promised
- 1:31freedom from corruption, justice for the poor,
- 1:34and a government that would belong to the people.
- 1:37He spoke of liberty, equality, and a new dawn
- 1:41for Cuba, a nation free from tyranny and greed.
- 1:47Crowds filled the streets, waving flags and shouting,
- 1:55They were witnessing the birth of a government
- 1:57that would restore the dignity and hope. Castro's
- 2:02speeches were filled with passion and conviction.
- 2:05He declared that the revolution was not for himself,
- 2:08but for the people. For the farmer, for the worker,
- 2:12for the student, and for the family who had suffered
- 2:15under Batista's corruption. But within just two
- 2:19or three years, the vision changed. The promise
- 2:24of freedom became the reality of control. The
- 2:27revolution that had begun with cries of liberty
- 2:30turned into a system of Marxist -Leninist communism.
- 2:35Castro aligned himself with the Soviet Union,
- 2:38silenced dissent, and declared that the state,
- 2:42not God, would define truth, morality, and justice.
- 2:48The people who had fought for freedom found themselves
- 2:51ruled by fear. Churches were closed. Pastors
- 2:54were watched. Citizens were told that loyalty
- 2:58to the revolution was more important than their
- 3:01loyalty to conscience. And while the ordinary
- 3:04Cubans struggled to survive, the government elite
- 3:07lived in luxury, protected by privilege, surrounded
- 3:11by abundance, and insulated from the suffering
- 3:14of the people. The revolution that promised equality
- 3:17created a new class of rulers. who enjoyed what
- 3:21others were denied. The dream of the people's
- 3:24government became a nightmare of a party's government.
- 3:28The voice of people was replaced by the voice
- 3:31of state, and the freedom that had been promised
- 3:34was quickly taken away. So what was the church
- 3:38under communism? When Castro embraced Marxist
- 3:43-Leninist rule, the Cuban church quickly discovered
- 3:45that the revolution's promises of freedom did
- 3:48not apply to faith. What had been presented as
- 3:52a movement for the people became a system that
- 3:54demanded absolute loyalty to the state, and Christianity
- 3:58was seen as a rival authority. The new government
- 4:02began redefining religion. Churches were no longer
- 4:05spiritual communities. They were treated as political
- 4:09organizations. Pastors were labeled as counter
- 4:12-revolutionary. Christian families were watched.
- 4:16And the message was clear. Faith was acceptable
- 4:18only if it served the revolution. To enforce
- 4:23this, the regime created the Office of Religious
- 4:26Affairs, a government body. with sweeping power.
- 4:29It monitored sermons, controlled church activities,
- 4:32approved or denied religious gatherings, and
- 4:35kept detailed files on pastors and congregations.
- 4:38The state decided what was allowed in worship,
- 4:41and what could be preached, and who could lead.
- 4:45Christian schools, many of them respected for
- 4:49decades, were nationalized. Crosses were removed
- 4:52from the classrooms. Bibles were taken away.
- 4:55Teachers were ordered to promote atheism, and
- 4:58revolutionary ideology. Children were taught
- 5:01that loyalty to Castro mattered more than loyalty
- 5:05to God. Missionaries were expelled, seminaries
- 5:09were closed, church property was seized, and
- 5:12believers who refused to conform were denied
- 5:14access to education, employment, and government
- 5:17services. A Christian could be a citizen, but
- 5:21only a second -class one. The government also
- 5:24launched a massive propaganda campaign. Posters,
- 5:27radios, broadcasts, and youth programs portrayed
- 5:30Christianity as weak, outdated, and dangerous
- 5:33to the revolution. The message was repeated everywhere.
- 5:37The revolution is your savior. The state is your
- 5:41provider. The party is your truth. But while
- 5:45the state demanded sacrifice from the people,
- 5:47the government elite lived in privilege. High
- 5:50-ranking officials enjoyed imported goods, private
- 5:52homes, special medical care, and access to resources
- 5:55unavailable to ordinary Cubans. The same leaders
- 6:00who preached equality lived in comfort while
- 6:03the people waited in ration lines. This hypocrisy
- 6:07deepened the conflict between Christianity and
- 6:10communism. Christianity teaches humility, truth,
- 6:14and the equal worth of every person. Marxist
- 6:17-Leninist rule in Cuba produced a ruling class
- 6:20that lived above the people, while insisting
- 6:23the people worship the revolution. And yet, despite
- 6:27surveillance, discrimination, and pressure to
- 6:29conform, the church did not disappear. It adapted.
- 6:33It endured. It found ways to survive when the
- 6:37state tried to silence it. Now we turn to the
- 6:40ideological conflict. Communism teaches that
- 6:43the state is the ultimate authority. Christianity
- 6:47teaches that God is the ultimate authority. Communism
- 6:51demands loyalty to the party. Christianity demands
- 6:55loyalty to Christ. Communism seeks to reshape
- 7:00human nature through ideology. Christianity seeks
- 7:04to transform human hearts through grace. These
- 7:08two worldviews cannot coexist peacefully when
- 7:12the state claims divine power. Then came the
- 7:15persecution of believers. During the 1960s and
- 7:2070s, thousands of Christians faced persecution.
- 7:24Pastors were imprisoned. Churches were closed.
- 7:26Believers were denied education and employment.
- 7:29Children of Christians were mocked in the schools.
- 7:32The government promoted atheism through propaganda,
- 7:35youth programs, and mandatory political education.
- 7:39Faith was portrayed as weakness, a relic of the
- 7:43past. Yet the church endured. So there became
- 7:48the underground church in Cuba. In homes and
- 7:52hidden rooms, believers gathered to pray, read
- 7:55scripture, and sing quietly. They shared Bibles
- 7:58smuggled from abroad. They baptized in secret.
- 8:01They encouraged one another to stand firm. The
- 8:05underground church became a symbol of courage,
- 8:07proof that faith survives even under oppression.
- 8:13And then there was a turning point. In 1991,
- 8:17after the collapse of the Soviet Union, Cuba
- 8:21faced an economic crisis. So Castro eased restrictions
- 8:26on religion to gain international support. Churches
- 8:31were reopened, believers reemerged, but the state
- 8:34still maintained control. Even today, religious
- 8:38freedom in Cuba remains limited. Churches must
- 8:40register with the government, pastors face surveillance,
- 8:43and a political dissent disguised as faith is
- 8:47punished. So here lie the lesson for the church.
- 8:51Cuba's story reminds us that when government
- 8:55becomes God, freedom dies. But it also reminds
- 8:59us that faith endures, even in the face of persecution.
- 9:03The Cuban church teaches us that the courage
- 9:06is not the absence of fear. It is the presence
- 9:11of conviction. It teaches us the truth. cannot
- 9:14be silenced by ideology. And it teaches us that
- 9:18the gospel thrives even in the shadows. For the
- 9:21people of Cuba who are oppressed even still today,
- 9:24with the hope that that will end very soon, let
- 9:30us pray together. Father, we thank you for the
- 9:34witness of your people in Cuba, men and women
- 9:37who have held fast to the gospel when their freedom
- 9:40was taken. and their voices were silenced. We
- 9:43thank you for the courage you placed in their
- 9:46hearts, the strength you gave them to their families,
- 9:50and the light you preserved in the midst of darkness.
- 9:54Lord, remind us that no government, no ideology,
- 9:58and no earthly power can ever replace you. You
- 10:02alone are God. You alone define truth. You alone
- 10:06give freedom that cannot be taken away. We pray
- 10:11for believers around the world who still worship
- 10:14in secret, who still face pressure, surveillance,
- 10:17and fear. Strengthen them, protect them, surround
- 10:20them with your presence. And let their faith
- 10:24be a testimony that inspires us to stand boldly
- 10:28for Christ wherever we are. And Father, help
- 10:32us to learn from their endurance. Teach us to
- 10:36value the freedom we have. to guard it with wisdom,
- 10:40and to use it for your glory. May our hearts
- 10:43remain faithful, our voices remain clear, and
- 10:47our lives remain anchored in your truth. In Jesus'
- 10:51name we pray, amen. We've seen how the Cuban
- 10:56Revolution reshaped a nation and how the church
- 10:59refused to surrender its soul. Sometimes someone
- 11:04can promise everything we had hoped for. But
- 11:09when it comes to the delivery, unless you're
- 11:12involved, unless you're part of it, we can never
- 11:16anticipate what the true outcome will be. Next
- 11:21week, we turn to another chapter in the story
- 11:24of freedom and faith. It's going to be about
- 11:27China, the controlled church, and the struggle
- 11:31for truth. This has been Voices of Life, a ministry
- 11:35of the Church for Life. When Freedom Dies series,
- 11:39Episode 5, Cuba, the Revolution, and the Church.
- 11:44I'm Pastor David, and I'll see you next week.
- 11:47Thank you for joining us for Episode 5 of Voices
- 11:52of Life. When Freedom Dies tonight, Pastor David
- 11:57walked us through the promises of the Cuban Revolution,
- 12:00the rapid turn toward communism, and the courage
- 12:04of believers who held on to their faith. even
- 12:07as the state tried to silence the church. Cuba's
- 12:11story reminds us that when government becomes
- 12:13God, freedom disappears. But the light of Christ
- 12:18continues to shine, even in the darkest places.
- 12:23Next week, we continue our journey with Episode
- 12:266, exploring the struggle for truth and worship
- 12:30inside China's controlled religious system. This
- 12:35has been Voices of Life. When freedom dies. We'll
- 12:40see you in the next episode.
