- 0:00Welcome to Tabernacle Talk. Tabernacle Talk is a Bible study
- 0:03podcast brought from Tabernacle Baptist Church in Essex, MD.
- 0:07I'm your host, Brian Self. We hope this podcast encourages
- 0:10you to know Christ, grow in his word, and show his love to
- 0:14others. Let's dive right in.
- 0:15Welcome back to Tabernacle Talk. Today we are in Isaiah 35, and
- 0:20this is the end of this particular portion of Isaiah
- 0:24that we've been in since probably chapter 10 or 11, if I
- 0:30remember correctly. As we've been walking through
- 0:34Isaiah's prophecies against the wickedness of his own nation of
- 0:39Judah and its capital city, Jerusalem, the northern Kingdom
- 0:42of Israel and its capital city of Samaria, and then all of the
- 0:46nations around Israel, the ways in which they were not walking
- 0:52with God, they were not doing right by humanity.
- 0:55And so the judgment that they would find from God.
- 0:59And then we also saw over and over again the promise of what
- 1:04God would do in rescuing and restoring humanity, of dealing
- 1:10justly with human evil and the new Jerusalem, the new world
- 1:16that He was going to make, empowered by God's own presence,
- 1:20His Spirit living and working in His people.
- 1:25And so today we are in Isaiah 35, and we're going to begin in
- 1:28verse #1. This chapter is only 10 verses,
- 1:32and I actually grew up singing a song from Isaiah chapter 35 and
- 1:37verse #10 and so I might link that one in the show notes if I
- 1:40can find a recording of it. But let's begin reading now in
- 1:45verse #1 The wilderness and the dry land will be glad.
- 1:50The desert will rejoice and blossom like a wildflower.
- 1:54It will blossom abundantly and will also rejoice with joy and
- 1:59singing. The glory of Lebanon will be
- 2:02given to it. The splendor of Carmel and
- 2:04Sharon. They will see the glory of
- 2:06Yahweh, the splendor of our God. So here, the places on planet
- 2:13earth that were once barren, useless, without trees, without
- 2:17crops, without grass, All of the earth will be made right.
- 2:23And so here, the glory of Lebanon.
- 2:25These are the big trees. Even the desert will experience
- 2:30the good life, if you will verse #3 Strengthen the weak hands,
- 2:36steady the shaking knees, Say to the cowardly, Be strong.
- 2:40Do not fear, here is your God. Vengeance is coming.
- 2:45God's retribution is coming. He will save you.
- 2:50Then the eyes of the blind will be opened and the ears of the
- 2:54deaf unstopped. Then the lame will leap like a
- 2:57deer, and the tongue of the mute will sing for joy.
- 3:01For water will gush in the wilderness and streams in the
- 3:05desert. The parched ground will become a
- 3:08pool, and the thirsty land springs in the haunt of jackals.
- 3:14In their lairs there will be grass, reeds and papyrus.
- 3:18So here in these verses, there is coming that wonderful day
- 3:23when everything wrong with our world is made right.
- 3:27And one of the beautiful ways that this is done is for those
- 3:30that have experienced disability in their life, whether due to
- 3:35injury or just the way that they were born, their genetics, that
- 3:39God will make the blind to see, He will make the deaf to hear,
- 3:44He will make the mute to be able not just to speak, but to sing
- 3:49for joy. The places in our world that
- 3:52could not sustain life, they were wilderness, they were
- 3:54desert, Now they have water. So everywhere there is able to
- 4:00be life and flourishing, they are in the haunt of jackals.
- 4:04So think in the US, this always brings to mind for me Nevada,
- 4:10Utah, New Mexico, Arizona, like that kind of area of the US if
- 4:16all of that looks like, you know, here in Maryland, we have
- 4:20an abundance of trees and bushes.
- 4:23There's, there's just stuff growing all over the place here
- 4:26because yeah, even here in Essex, you know, we're right by
- 4:29the water and I can probably take a 30 second walk and get to
- 4:39some portions of water over by my house.
- 4:43I think there's AI, don't know if it'd be right to call it a
- 4:46swamp behind my house, but there's at least some sort of
- 4:50watery something that is behind my back fence.
- 4:55And so everywhere here is described like the Nile in Egypt
- 5:02of the grass reeds and papyrus, that the wonderful agriculture
- 5:08that was able to take place in the flourishing of that portion
- 5:12of Egypt right by the Nile, that even wilderness and desert
- 5:17settings would be able to be like that be able to experience
- 5:22that fruitfulness of agriculture as a result.
- 5:26And what a joy that this is, that even our imperfections and
- 5:32our failures are not our forever.
- 5:35So for those of you who maybe have some mental health
- 5:39struggles and things, things like OCDADHDADD, bipolar
- 5:45disorder, struggle heavily with anxiety or depression, those
- 5:51types of things, that's not our forever.
- 5:54That one day we will experience wholeness and those parts of our
- 5:59brain right now that maybe don't work as correctly or as normally
- 6:05as they might for some other people, we are going to
- 6:08experience wholeness on that day.
- 6:11And I'm looking forward to that. I've got even friends of mine
- 6:14who they have children that have experienced some hard
- 6:19difficulties in their life, even with some of their abilities and
- 6:24things that they're able to do and not able to do.
- 6:27And on that day when God makes all things new, one of those
- 6:30things that's getting fixed in all of creation is our areas of
- 6:36fallenness. That sin has wrecked a whole lot
- 6:41of everything. It's wrecked our moral centers
- 6:45in a lot of ways so that we don't think or talk or act like
- 6:49God. And that's getting fixed on that
- 6:52wonderful day. There are areas of this world
- 6:54that are just uninhabitable, aren't able to make human life
- 7:00flourish. You can think of the many people
- 7:03all across the world even that experience starvation and
- 7:07nutrient deficiency and all of that.
- 7:10All of that is one day coming to an end.
- 7:12And so though the story right now might not look like it is
- 7:16complete, it might not look like a great story in the here and
- 7:20now, That's because the end of the story, it has not come yet.
- 7:25And so we can live in the broken now in light of the wonderful
- 7:30someday that is coming. Verse #8 a road will be there
- 7:35and away. It will be called the Holy Way
- 7:39or in some older translations the Holy Highway.
- 7:43This is a place that you are walking on.
- 7:46It is a path that is a well worn path.
- 7:49So there is this holy highway that is there.
- 7:52It says the unclean will not travel on it, but it will be for
- 7:55the one who walks the path. So those that want relationship
- 7:59with God, they will be able to experience this way into the
- 8:04restored land, if you will, the new Eden that just as in Genesis
- 8:082 where there's this wilderness where there's no life and God
- 8:12brings humanity, He brings plants, He brings rivers, He
- 8:17brings the trees, and all of that happens there in that place
- 8:22in Eden. Now there is going to be a new
- 8:25Eden. God is making a new creation.
- 8:28And those that want to travel God's way to get there will be
- 8:32able to travel that. And certainly you can think
- 8:33about Jesus where he says I am the way, the truth and the life.
- 8:38And Jesus is ultimately the holy way by which we enter into new
- 8:43creation or new Eden. It says fools will not wander on
- 8:47it. There will be no lion there, and
- 8:50no vicious beast will go up on it.
- 8:52They will not be found there, but the redeemed will walk on
- 8:55it, and the ransomed of Yahweh will return and come to Zion
- 9:00with singing, crowned with unending joy.
- 9:04Joy and gladness will overtake them, and sorrow and sighing
- 9:10will flee. What a wonderful joyous thought
- 9:15that this is, and I love the words that are used here.
- 9:17There's no danger to us in the new creation.
- 9:21He says in the end of verse #9 where the sentence starts, He
- 9:26says, but the redeemed will walk on it, that we are no longer
- 9:31slaves to sin and death and Satan.
- 9:35We have been purchased back, and though in our moral bankruptcy
- 9:42we sold ourselves out to Satan as all humanity, and we did what
- 9:47He wanted us to do in rebellion against God, God has purchased
- 9:51us back through the precious blood of Christ, not with silver
- 9:54or gold, but with Jesus his own life.
- 9:56He bought us back. And so we are the redeemed, we
- 10:00are the ransomed, We are those who were held captive, and Jesus
- 10:05went charged into death, and he rescued us.
- 10:09And so we are the redeemed who will walk on the holy highway.
- 10:12We are the ransomed of Yahweh who return.
- 10:16And we come to Zion, not as captives, but as joyous, if you
- 10:22will, joyous pilgrims, joyous ones coming back home.
- 10:27We come with singing, it says, crowned with unending joy.
- 10:32And I look forward to that day with such anticipation that
- 10:38unending joy is going to be what I wear for all of eternity.
- 10:43Not unending boredom, not unending even just wisdom, but
- 10:49unending joy, because my God is unending, and in His presence,
- 10:55in His Spirit, we find joy, and so for all of eternity we will
- 11:00experience unending joy. It says joy and gladness will
- 11:04overtake them. It is running after me even as
- 11:08you can think about Psalm 23. Surely goodness and mercy shall
- 11:12follow me all the days of my life and I will dwell in the
- 11:15House of Yahweh forever, it says, and sorrow and sighing
- 11:21will flee. There's going to be no more
- 11:23sadness, no more depression, no more grief that we experience on
- 11:28that wonderful day. It is a beautiful never ending
- 11:32story in which each chapter is better than the last, as CS
- 11:37Lewis would put it in his book The Last Battle.
- 11:41The way that I memorized this first grown up, I think it's put
- 11:45to music from the specific verbiage or translation of the
- 11:51King James Version says. Therefore the redeemed of the
- 11:54Lord shall return, and come with singing unto Zion, and
- 11:59everlasting joy shall be upon their heads.
- 12:03They shall obtain gladness and joy and sorrow and mourning will
- 12:08flee away. And what a wonderful day that
- 12:11that will be today. What do we make of this?
- 12:15Realize that whatever is broken in your life, God is going to
- 12:19fix it. One day He might fix some things
- 12:21for us in the here and now. He definitely wants to fix our
- 12:26broken morality in the here and now that we would begin to love
- 12:30the things that He loves, hate the things that He hates.
- 12:33We would love people and love Him, and that we would make
- 12:38right choices that align with that center of morality.
- 12:44That's our true north. That's where our inner compass
- 12:48ought to point. So God wants to shape and change
- 12:51our morality even now, and He will fix everything else.
- 12:54On that day of new creation there is going to come this
- 12:59wonderful new life, and the fools, the wicked, the unclean
- 13:06will not go there. That's not the people that God
- 13:12doesn't like. Those are the people that do not
- 13:14like God. And because of their hatred for
- 13:17the Lord, they will not take the path to life which is Jesus
- 13:20Christ. If you've never chosen Jesus as
- 13:23your Lord and your Savior, the one who calls the shots in your
- 13:26life, then make that choice today.
- 13:28Confess your sins to Him and believe in Him as your Lord and
- 13:32Savior, and you will be saved. And then know the future that is
- 13:36awaiting you and start singing even now, because now you are
- 13:41redeemed and ransomed. You are on your way to heaven.
- 13:45And so we are crowned with unending joy, joy and gladness.
- 13:49Are you pursuing us? The sadness that we experience
- 13:53now is one day going to leave us forever because there will be no
- 13:58more things to be sad about. And So what a joy.
- 14:02Thank you, Lord Jesus, for what you have accomplished.
- 14:07Thank you for your work on the cross that has made it possible
- 14:11for us to experience eternal life.
- 14:14To you be all the glory and the praise forever and ever.
- 14:18Amen. Thank you for tuning in today as

- 14:58southern Kingdom of Judah and in particular the capital city of
- 15:01Jerusalem and Isaiah himself are surrounded by the Assyrian army.
- 15:07And really looking forward to that time with you.
- 15:10God bless. Have a wonderful day.
