- 0:12SPEAKER_00: Hey my friend, welcome to today's episode of the Daily Writer Podcast.
- 0:17SPEAKER_00: It's tempting as a writer to think that everybody is your audience, but the reality is that your message is not for everybody.
- 0:24SPEAKER_00: It's a paradox that the more you focus on a very specific type of person as your reader, the more people will be able to relate to it.
- 0:33SPEAKER_00: Specifically, narrowing down your audience will give you three important things.
- 0:38SPEAKER_00: Number one, it'll give you clarity.
- 0:41SPEAKER_00: A lot of the frustration that writers feel is because they're confused.
- 0:45SPEAKER_00: When you understand who you're writing for and you understand their frustrations that you're helping to solve, life gets a lot easier and more fun as a writer.
- 0:53SPEAKER_00: You want your material to attract the right people and to repel the wrong people.
- 0:59SPEAKER_00: So that's why clarity is really important.
- 1:01SPEAKER_00: Number two, knowing your specific audience will give you intensity.
- 1:05SPEAKER_00: It's very exciting to go through this process and finally get a handle on who you're writing for when you figure all that out.
- 1:12SPEAKER_00: And this will give you an incredible intensity because you know your audience and you understand them.
- 1:17SPEAKER_00: It also takes all of the guesswork out of your writing.
- 1:20SPEAKER_00: Whenever you have clarity, then you'll have an intensity of focus because you know what you're trying to accomplish.
- 1:26SPEAKER_00: And then finally, number three, you can have better feedback whenever you know specifically who you're writing for.
- 1:32SPEAKER_00: Whenever you start to write for a particular type of person, you'll get feedback from people that'll help you further refine your audience's needs and interests.
- 1:40SPEAKER_00: If you're writing for everybody out there, then your message is going to be diluted because you're always going to be second guessing yourself.
- 1:48SPEAKER_00: Whenever you try to write for everybody, it's like going down a wide river that has no momentum.
- 1:53SPEAKER_00: But whenever you write for a more focused and specific audience, it's like going down rapids where the banks are close together and there's lots of action.
- 2:01SPEAKER_00: You'll experience a lot more excitement and you'll get where you're going a lot faster.
- 2:06SPEAKER_00: Here's today's question: what specific audience are you writing for?
