• 0:00
  SPEAKER_00: Nehemiah 2, 11 and 12.
• 0:04
SPEAKER_00: When something matters deeply to us, there can be a strong desire to move quickly, to identify what is broken, make a plan, and begin acting.
• 0:14
SPEAKER_00: But Nehemiah gives us a different picture.
• 0:17
SPEAKER_00: When he arrived in Jerusalem, he didn't immediately announce what he intended to do.
• 0:22
  SPEAKER_00: Instead, he waited.
• 0:24
SPEAKER_00: After three days, he quietly went out at night to see for himself and carefully assess what was before him.
• 0:33
SPEAKER_00: Jesus gives us a similar picture in Luke 14, when he describes someone who first sits down and counts the cost before moving forward.
• 0:43
SPEAKER_00: Together, these passages invite us into a posture of waiting and assessing before acting.
• 0:50
SPEAKER_00: They remind us that God's work often begins with prayer and waiting while seeking Him and allowing Him to prepare our hearts before we move.
• 1:01
SPEAKER_00: Nehemiah had already prayed and received direction from God.
• 1:06
SPEAKER_00: He had even received favor from the king and had traveled a great distance.
• 1:10
SPEAKER_00: The opportunity to act was there.
• 1:13
SPEAKER_00: Yet when he arrived, he took time to pray and further seek the Lord.
• 1:19
SPEAKER_00: He says, I was there three days.
• 1:22
SPEAKER_00: There is something important about those three days.
• 1:26
SPEAKER_00: Nehemiah had a burden from God, but he didn't assume that having the burden meant he immediately understood everything that needed to be done.
• 1:35
  SPEAKER_00: He waited.
• 1:36
SPEAKER_00: We can genuinely desire to see God do something without yet knowing exactly what he wants us to do.
• 1:45
SPEAKER_00: Discerning God's calling is often slow and unfolding.
• 1:49
SPEAKER_00: Sometimes faith means moving forward, but sometimes faith means being willing to wait until God makes the next step clear.
• 1:58
SPEAKER_00: Then Nehemiah assesses the situation.
• 2:02
SPEAKER_00: He doesn't simply rely on what he has heard or assume he knows the right course of action.
• 2:09
SPEAKER_00: He takes time to see for himself, carefully assessing the situation before deciding what to do.
• 2:17
SPEAKER_00: Nehemiah shows us that recognizing a need isn't the same as fully understanding it.
• 2:23
SPEAKER_00: That applies to us personally, and it applies to us as a church.
• 2:29
SPEAKER_00: We may see things that need attention.
• 2:31
SPEAKER_00: We may have ideas about discipleship, reaching people, restoration, or even multiplying God's kingdom.
• 2:39
SPEAKER_00: But before asking what should we do, let's first ask God, what are you showing us?
• 2:46
SPEAKER_00: And what do you want us to do?
• 2:50
SPEAKER_00: Notice what Nehemiah says next.
• 2:53
SPEAKER_00: I told no one what my God had put into my heart to do.
• 2:58
SPEAKER_00: Nehemiah had a sense of what God had put on his heart.
• 3:02
SPEAKER_00: But he didn't immediately announce it or act on it.
• 3:05
  SPEAKER_00: He prayed.
• 3:06
  SPEAKER_00: He waited.
• 3:07
SPEAKER_00: He looked carefully at the situation.
• 3:11
SPEAKER_00: That gives us a helpful picture of where we are as a church.
• 3:16
SPEAKER_00: On September 27th, our leadership shared what we believe God may be leading CBC toward.
• 3:22
SPEAKER_00: Now comes an important part for all of us.
• 3:26
SPEAKER_00: Rather than rushing the next step, we're inviting our entire church family to slow down, pray, seek the Lord, and listen for his direction.
• 3:36
SPEAKER_00: Together we want to discern where God is leading us as his church, and then faithfully follow wherever he leads.
• 3:45
SPEAKER_00: That brings us back to Jesus' words in Luke 14.
• 3:49
SPEAKER_00: First sit down and count the cost.
• 3:51
SPEAKER_00: Like Nehemiah, the first posture is to seek God through prayer, slow down, and consider where he may be leading.
• 4:00
SPEAKER_00: Jesus isn't discouraging the plan, he's reminding us that starting something and finishing it are two different things.
• 4:08
SPEAKER_00: God's work takes preparation, perseverance, and faith when things become difficult.
• 4:14
SPEAKER_00: So how does that impact us today?
• 4:17
SPEAKER_00: Nehemiah eventually faced opposition, great discouragement, fatigue, fear, and difficult decisions.
• 4:26
SPEAKER_00: We may face some of those same things.
• 4:29
SPEAKER_00: That's why we want God to prepare our hearts, not just for what we hope he will do, but for whatever he may ask of us.
• 4:39
SPEAKER_00: We can pray for wisdom to recognize his timing, faith to trust him, and perseverance to remain faithful when things become difficult.
• 4:50
SPEAKER_00: Remember, in Nehemiah's day the people of God were broken, but God had not abandoned them.
• 4:56
SPEAKER_00: Their brokenness wasn't the end of the story.
• 4:59
SPEAKER_00: God was at work to renew and restore them for his glory.
• 5:03
SPEAKER_00: And that gives us hope when we look at what may be incomplete or broken in our lives, our church, or the people God has placed around us.
• 5:13
SPEAKER_00: And remember, God does the work.
• 5:15
SPEAKER_00: Our role is simply to pray, seek Him, remain faithful, and then respond to His leading.
• 5:21
SPEAKER_00: The invitation today to you is to become attentive to what God is doing and where He is leading us.
• 5:27
SPEAKER_00: So as we continue this journey, let's take our cues from Nehemiah and sit with the weight of what is before us, continue our fasting and prayer, and allow God to show us where He may be leading us.
• 5:41
  SPEAKER_00: A question to consider.
• 5:43
SPEAKER_00: As I look what is before us, what might God be inviting me to see?
• 5:49
SPEAKER_00: To surrender or to trust before I think about what I should do?
• 5:55
  SPEAKER_00: And a prayer.
• 5:56
SPEAKER_00: God help me slow down, see clearly, and trust you with what you are unfolding.
