- 0:03We are joined by Charlie Strickland of the Talent Training Group and our personal defense
- 0:07segment. We do this twice a month on Wednesdays, and when there's a
- 0:10fifth Wednesday, I believe that's August, we have a Q and a session
- 0:14coming up. How you doing, man, my friend, I'm doing fantastic,
- 0:18fantastic. I always look forward, whether you know it or not,
- 0:21to coming over here on the Wednesday that I get now. Used, you
- 0:25know, when it was local, it was easy and I don't have to
- 0:28get up at you know, five am, and drive an hour and make
- 0:31a dog arrangements for the dogs get over here. Like a minute ago,
- 0:34I'm chasing around the parking lot trying to get them back in the car.
- 0:37So I do the show. And how does that work for you? Literally
- 0:43working in two time zones? It's weird. Yeah, I would guess who
- 0:47would be? Yeah, I'm so. I live in Central and where I
- 0:53grew up, got used to Eastern for all those years. Now I have
- 0:57to, I really really have to think about because I'm in Dothan one day,
- 1:00I'm in Tallahassee the next. Sometimes I stay in Marianne. It just
- 1:04depends. I'm on the computer. I can do anything from anywhere. I
- 1:07can. I can log into any of our any of our computers from my
- 1:11phone now and and see what you know, it's going on with it.
- 1:15So I can work from anywhere. But I when you're setting a calendar date
- 1:22for an appointment and you're in Eastern, it puts it on Eastern, and
- 1:26then you're over there, and then it's all. It's just it's confusing.
- 1:30I'll be in Dothan, put something on the calendar for Tallahassee, and then
- 1:34you know, or I fast for I don't know if I'm laid, if
- 1:36I'm early. I use a lot of parentheses when I when I write calendar
- 1:42events and I'm in different time zones, it is it's you know, but
- 1:46without technology. You know, I was thinking about this because I live in
- 1:49my hometown where I grew up, and we used to ride around town,
- 1:52and you know, I'm from like you you know, I remember the long
- 1:56a chord on the telephone was a good thing because then you could sit on
- 1:59the floor, were over the you know, the phones on the wall or
- 2:01on the table, and that's chord getting wound up and trying to you know,
- 2:06sit there on a party line and talk to some girl or your buddy
- 2:08or whatever. And you know, riding around town with a CB radio so
- 2:13we could find the party or where everybody was hanging out. Good buddy,
- 2:15you know it was everybody had a handle and so it was, you know,
- 2:22just nowadays, I don't know how anybody actually was wildly successful back in
- 2:28the day because you just don't have the ability to leverage things. And my
- 2:31phone in my hand over here, I mean I had to silence it a
- 2:34minute ago. But if if it weren't for that link to technology, I
- 2:38would probably lead a happier, simpler life. Sure, but now I'll just
- 2:42lead a happy, complicated life. Yeah, you know, it's just it
- 2:45is. When you hear me talk about or when you hear news that a
- 2:50state has eradicated cash bail, what do you think, Well, that means
- 2:54what so so, I mean sore just turning people right back out on the
- 3:00street again. They're saying, you're too poor to afford bail, so we're
- 3:04just gonna cycle you right through the process and put you right back out on
- 3:07the street. Only the worst of the worst, they say, will be
- 3:10kept without Okay. So one of the biggest issues with juvenile crime. For
- 3:15law enforcement, speaking from experience, I arrested a kid one time that had
- 3:19broken into Doe Campbell Stadium as you're familiar, not Doe Cambell Stadium, What's
- 3:23Dick Hauser Field, Yeah, okay, and had gone in. There was
- 3:27a room there is an FSU cop. There was a room there where they
- 3:30kept all the hoggingdies. Okay, you know. So they left the room
- 3:35unlocked and they knew where that was. Hyeah. And some kid comes along
- 3:38and he goes in there and he steals ice cream and we catch him and
- 3:40we arrest him. He's eleven years old. Okay, that's my son's age.
- 3:46He's probably gonna hang out house playing video games today. I mean that's
- 3:50you know. So arrest is kid juvenile. I take him, can't find
- 3:54anybody to accept him. Now he's thirteen. He's been arrested thirteen times at
- 4:00eleven home my okay, and so I get him that nobody they don't want
- 4:05to detain him, so we take him. He goes take him to his
- 4:09grandmother's house and she just runs him out of the yard. The problem with
- 4:13you even off crime is nothing happens now if you do cash, you don't
- 4:17you can do away with cash bail. You still have the same catching release
- 4:21program for adults now, So it just compounds the problem until you can get
- 4:26enough on him to keep him in jail for some period of time. Right,
- 4:29So you know, I understand they say it's inscriminatory at all, but
- 4:31the fact is, if there's no immediate penalty, a lot of times there's
- 4:35no long term penalty either, and it's just compounds the problem. Asking the
- 4:41questions you want the answers to The Morning Show with truston scott On News Radio
- 4:46one hundred point seven w FLA. Charlie Strickland of the Talent Training Group my
- 4:55guest. We do this on the first and third wednesdays of the month.
- 4:58Charlie comes in on the third Wednesday. We talk personal defense, a little
- 5:01snapshot of different topics today, and at the bottom of the hour, when
- 5:05we kind of do our final two segments, we're going to talk about the
- 5:09Dan Marquel case because I maintain there are lessons that we can take from that
- 5:14because sadly, though you might not be targeted for an assassination like he was,
- 5:19there are people following people home now, and people are following nice cars
- 5:25and they're following people into their homes and stuff like this is happening, and
- 5:28I just want I want to talk about it because it was nine years ago
- 5:30yesterday that Dan Marquel was shot and killed in his driveway. Someone had followed
- 5:34him a long way home. Charlie, what do you make you've seen?
- 5:39Now we're half a month into the new law. What do you make of
- 5:42the fact that firearms sales are topping a million a million now for forty seven
- 5:46straight months. Well on the gun store, So I kind of like it.
- 5:54I know you're smiling about it, but it's a saddle perspective. What
- 5:58does it say to you? Things aren't getting any better, Preston, and
- 6:01they're not going to get better. We saw a really huge spike back during
- 6:06all of the riots and the civil interest and everything back in twenty twenty,
- 6:12which I don't know if you've heard the new country song that's hit in the
- 6:16airs, now try it in a small town. Yeah, now my new
- 6:21favorite song. I now live in a small town. So now it concerns
- 6:28it concerns me that a lot of people are buying guns. I have no
- 6:30idea what they're doing with them. They're just you know, getting them right,
- 6:34because the number of people who are responsible enough to go get the training
- 6:39and to actually learn the law, and you know, you go, you
- 6:42go get something like buying a sports car that you have no idea how to
- 6:45drive, and you go buy a gun and you don't know how to use
- 6:48it and you don't understand what the law says and you don't understand gun safety.
- 6:53Yes, you have the right, and I fully support the Second Amendment
- 6:56and the right. And that's the consequence. And I hate to put a
- 7:00butt in there because that's one of the things we hate here and is Yeah,
- 7:01I almost a Second Amendment supporter, but well I'm a huge Second Amendment
- 7:05supporter, and I think you also have the responsibility to get training or understand
- 7:12something. I don't care if it's your cousin training you or if you're getting
- 7:15formal training. People are people who just now A lot of that's buying more
- 7:20guns. There's a lot of people afraid that you know, laws are going
- 7:24to change, um and so they're getting the second to the third and the
- 7:27fourteenth gun. You know, to go involved. That's not what I'm talking
- 7:30to. It's the first time gun buyer, Like the lady I was right
- 7:35to this this. I was doing it for you. Thank you. You're
- 7:38a professional radio game. Now I am. I'm waiting on that first check
- 7:42I need. So with the new laws that in Alabama had constitutional carry pass
- 7:49at the beginning of the year, and they went from very strict permits for
- 7:53guns and cars and things like that too. Now it's it's it's much more
- 7:57open and they have true open They have have had open carry and permit to
- 8:01concealed carry. Now they have permitless concealed carry to go with open carry.
- 8:05That's true constitutional carry. Florida has permit less carry, a little bit of
- 8:09open carry depending on what you're doing, and that's it. But these and
- 8:13Georgia's the same way. So the try states now are open for business for
- 8:16people to carry guns without permits. Um. Yeah, you're going to see
- 8:20an increase in sales because now people don't see the owner's process of going and
- 8:24applying for a permit. I had in Dothan yesterday, I was burning a
- 8:28pile of trees. I needed to go home. I had plans, and
- 8:31one of the guys in the front, Frank store manager, says, I've
- 8:33got an eighty three year old lady on the phone that wants to come in
- 8:37for training today today, and I said, as an emergency goes she was.
- 8:43She was. She had somebody following her the day she thought it was
- 8:46going to run her off the road, followed her for fifteen miles on a
- 8:48bumper. She was scared for her life following her and she went out immediately
- 8:54bought a gun and wants training today. We're gonna can we pick up there
- 8:58on the other side. Yeah, I want to come back to that story
- 9:01because it ties nicely to where we're gonna end up going here as well.
- 9:05This morning on your phone with the iHeart Radio appet on hundreds of devices like
- 9:09Alexa, Google Home, Xbox and so knows this is I Hearts radioization.
- 9:16Twenty one minutes after the hour Morning Show with Preston Scott, Charlie Strickland with
- 9:22us in studio today. You were telling us about a lady who eighty three
- 9:28years young and she didn't want training. She wanted training today. Well,
- 9:33she had something that frightened her. She was driving, and she didn't just
- 9:39come in and say this is why I want it. During the conversation of
- 9:41me explaining to her what the law said, what castle doctrine was dandil ground
- 9:46Alabama, Florida, Georgia is all about the same thing, very very little
- 9:48difference where she could carry a gun, all the stuff. And we got
- 9:52into and she started asking questions about what about in my car? What if
- 9:56somebody's on my bumper for fifteen and I think they're trying to run me off
- 10:03the road, And if they did run me off the road and then approach
- 10:05to my car, what could I do? And I said, well,
- 10:09if they've stalked you, followed you, it was you were an imminent fear
- 10:13of death, a great bodily harm. They tried to get into your car
- 10:15unlawfully and forcibly. I mean that's castle doctrine and standing ground in both states.
- 10:20And so yes, you you would be totally authorizing and using deadly force
- 10:24at that point in time. Plus at your age and size, it's a
- 10:28lot easier for you to justify the use of deadly force absolutely, because even
- 10:33if the person is unarmed, you know, if they can physically overpower you,
- 10:37then and they have demonstrated, you know, through their word or action
- 10:41that they intend to do that ability, opportunity and intent, they have the
- 10:45ability, the opportunity and they've expressed the intent to do that, then yeah,
- 10:48you can use deadly force. And she goes, okay, well good,
- 10:52then that's what I wanted to know. And we got on the range
- 10:54and work through. She had Smith and Wesson Easy nine, which is easier
- 10:58for her to operate her. Did she have that gun? She did,
- 11:01Okay, she showed up with it. I was. I was very glad
- 11:05because that's one of my favorite guns for people of that generation. Um,
- 11:09it does come with Now they are changing that gun model. Smith is not
- 11:13producing that particular one in that exact format anymore. They've transitioned to a newer
- 11:18version of the same thing. Arguably it's better and m but it still compasses
- 11:24the same thing that the slide is easier to manipulate, you know, and
- 11:26she's got her locking the slide of her hurdle. For some people it is,
- 11:31and it's not always. It's not a necessity to be able to lock
- 11:35the slide to the rear because you're gonna pick it up and use it and
- 11:39probably never gonna need to reload it, never gonna need it. You know.
- 11:43Our grandson's a cop, and she had this good sense to not have
- 11:48a family member trainer come to and get professional training. Um so I stuck
- 11:52around the afternoon and we spent a couple of hours together, and she can
- 11:56hit a person from seven yards reliably. There's no she's not in this listening
- 12:00audience. So I'm a little freere and discussing it. I don't like to
- 12:03put everybody's business on the street. But there were some issues with some malfunctions
- 12:07we had to work through because of the way she was gripping the guns.
- 12:11She had small hands, She'd never shot a fire she'd never shot a pistol
- 12:13in her eighty three years period. She shot rifles growing up. But that
- 12:18you mentioned malfunctions, that is where the slide issue can arise. It can.
- 12:22And the thing is is when you go buy a gun, you just
- 12:26assume it's going to work. But depending on the making, the model of
- 12:28the gun you're shooting technique, you know, there's some things that you might
- 12:33need to learn in order to make the gun run properly. Because the laws
- 12:39of physics apply, and so in Smith's case, when they start reducing spring
- 12:43rates and things so that you can more easily manipulate the gun, the springs
- 12:46aren't there to be able to handle some of the recoils, So shooting with
- 12:48the stiff wrists and making sure you're locking things out and gripping their firearm properly,
- 12:54and as a grip safety and a slide safety that she doesn't want to
- 12:58use, but it came on the gun. They make them with them without
- 13:01So you have to think about those things. And if that grips, say,
- 13:03if your grip's not just right, then you don't deactivate the grip safety.
- 13:05So sometimes it wan't fire. And I've had a number of people with
- 13:11advanced years come out with that same gun, and there are some that you
- 13:15have to know what you're doing. And well that's why I say going to
- 13:18the range and shooting and getting training and learning how to do it. It's
- 13:20not just buying the gun, it's getting you need to know what's going to
- 13:24work. Well, what do we do with a car, right, I
- 13:28mean, we don't turn a sixteen year old just go drive? Right,
- 13:31they're trained, Well, it's smart to do it. In this case.
- 13:35The Sakeing Amendment doesn't require you to have training, that's true. But if
- 13:39you are a responsible citizen and you're you're exercising, you're right you have responsibility
- 13:43to go with it too, which brings up, you know, being followed
- 13:46in your car, things like this. That's why it's such a threat to
- 13:48us is because people can follow you home, they can do things threaten you.
- 13:54You need to make sure that it is an immediate threat before you start
- 13:58using deadly force. True, But I want to go back to before we
- 14:01transition ahead. You gave you gave a quick rundown there of terms and expressions
- 14:07and things that if someone's a gun owner and they heard you say something there
- 14:11and they're like, huh, there's a good clue to go get some training,
- 14:16right. I mean, I try not to use a lot of terminology
- 14:20because one I may mess it up and get it wrong, and two I
- 14:24don't want to confuse the issue. But the fact is is the way firearms
- 14:30operate, particularly semi automatic pistols, and they are the best ones to carry
- 14:35because they have higher capacity and there they tend to be easier to operate,
- 14:41easier to grip. I'm gonna hate it when somebody sells a woman or revolver
- 14:43because they think that's what she can handle. That sexist and it's wrong.
- 14:48This lady figured this pistol out quite easily, it's almost the opposite. Yeah,
- 14:54semi automatics are better for most people across the board, particularly people with
- 15:01less experience in firems. It just it only takes me a few minutes to
- 15:03explain how it works. Yeah, and they get it so well. While
- 15:09a revolver might even be simpler than that, the fact is a revolver is
- 15:11more difficult to shoot for most, more difficult to shoot. It's more difficult
- 15:16to load and operate and reload. And the fact is, as you're getting
- 15:20five or six rounds versus eight, nine, ten, twelve rounds, may
- 15:24make it. It may make it nesty. Yes, it may make it
- 15:26necessary for someone to have to reload. The choice of giving my mom five
- 15:31bullets are giving her eleven or twelve. I'm gonna go with the eleven or
- 15:35twelve because I know there's probably in the real world not going to be a
- 15:39reload involved in that. Yeah, it's just simple. Well, you know,
- 15:46I have to say the words and we're back. Yes, we all
- 15:52try to be as deep and dulcet as you. I don't know if I
- 15:54can. You could do it better, I don't think so. Charlie's trickling
- 15:58with us Talent Outdoors and training group, Talent Range, you name it.
- 16:03I mentioned yesterday I was on a panel discussion on Monday, the night before
- 16:08the nine year mark of Dan Marquel's murder, and it was one of those
- 16:15YouTube live things, and you know, Charlie, I think back on that,
- 16:21and without getting into the weeds on the players involved, I just get
- 16:25back to the fact that Dan was followed and he just had no awareness that
- 16:30he was being followed. And for most people, that's the case. Somebody
- 16:37could be watching you every day and if you're not of the mindset that it
- 16:41might be happening, you know, if you don't have a little bit of
- 16:45paranoia in you, because it's not paranoid, if they're actually following you,
- 16:48you know, it's it's you, and you're a public figure, and you
- 16:55have concerns just I know that you've had people say things to you that is
- 17:00concerned. I'm a retired law enforcement officer, which a matter of fact,
- 17:03if my background check passes, I'll be a reserve deputy in another county here
- 17:07shortly that. I'm just gonna be doing some training. I'm not going back.
- 17:11I'm not gonna be kicking indoors and making the rest anymore. But I'm
- 17:14getting my standards back and going back in a law enforcement, um, just
- 17:18to share some a little bit of experience. And so but I you know,
- 17:22you and I were talking on the break about I know how many,
- 17:26approximate how many people I put in prison, and how many of them that
- 17:29you know, how many thousands of years of prison time I could claim credit
- 17:33for and when I would? And now I'm very open in public, and
- 17:38you know I'm not hard to find. So yeah, I have to worry
- 17:42about that, but so does everybody else in the community. You know,
- 17:45women have to worry about being stalked and have terrible things happen to them.
- 17:51Um, people with I don't care if you've gotten money, you're worried about
- 17:55somebody robbing you, or you don't have anything, and you know you live
- 17:57in a marginal area and you've got concerns because of that. The fact is
- 18:02is, if your head's not almost wivel, you're not paying attention, then
- 18:04you open yourself up to exactly what happened with him. And not many of
- 18:08us have our spouses taking out contracts on us or whatever happened in that case.
- 18:11But the fact is is that you really need to watch what's going on
- 18:17around you. And well, you know, I just I go back to
- 18:21Dan made at least four roughly four turns of his car and the car that
- 18:27came up behind him, and the shooter got out of his vehicle and walked
- 18:32up to him made those exact same sets of turns. And had he been
- 18:37armed and aware aware? Is the yes aware if because even if he wasn't
- 18:44armed, if he had been aware, maybe could circle the block again,
- 18:47you know, and say, okay, what's going on? Making nine one
- 18:49one call, something's going on, somebody's following me. Awareness is key,
- 18:53being armed as secondary to all that, because there's other things that you can
- 18:56do. You know that doesn't involve getting in a shoot out fair enough.
- 19:00But the fact is, and it's it's tough because you know, we talk
- 19:06about levels of awareness. We've done that before and let enough time today,
- 19:10but you get in you know, we have one more segment. Well,
- 19:11you you live your life in condition white, and condition white is when you're
- 19:15ignorant of your surroundings and you know, condition yellows when you're paying attention to
- 19:19the things around you. This is Cooper's color code. You know, Uh,
- 19:25condition orange is when there's a potential threat. Reds there's a fight.
- 19:27Black is when something happens to you and you were living in condition white,
- 19:32you immediately buzz out. You have no idea what to do, You can't
- 19:34react. So we recommend everybody lives their life in condition yellow and that is
- 19:38head honest. We will paying attention to what's going on around you. When
- 19:41you hear something, investigate it, you see something, pay attention. I
- 19:44mean, it's pretty simple. Talking with Charlie Strickland of the Talent Training Group
- 19:52personal Defense segment this morning, and we're zeroing in on lessons that we can
- 19:56take from the Dan Marquel's shooting. Just an absolute tr magity and we were
- 20:00you were just you just went through record time. I think I think you
- 20:03did set an official record. Um don't know if Guinness is going to recognize
- 20:07it for going through the color awareness codes there. What about the things that
- 20:15happen in life? You know, I just mentioned to you a guy you
- 20:18know, got got angry at being fired, came back to the workplace killed
- 20:23two co workers. Well, so there are indicators that somebody's on the edge,
- 20:29you know, and in the workplace, and we do a lot of
- 20:30workplace violence training and active shooter training. I just did an organ a nonprofit
- 20:34in Georgia the other day on zoom all over the state of Georgia, and
- 20:38just got invited back to do nine states worth of another nonprofit you know where
- 20:42we just charge a flat rate for training. How were many people they have?
- 20:47And one of the things we cover is, you know, workplace violence
- 20:49indicators and that's you know, what are what's going on? You know it
- 20:55just living your life day in and day out. There's nothing external, you
- 20:57know, it's easy to lapse in. But when something happens, you know,
- 21:02a coworker or somebody. You're going through a bad divorce, you're going
- 21:06through child custody issues, you're going through, um a business you know that's
- 21:11doing poorly. You've laid some people off, or you had to fire someone
- 21:15for personal problems, or whatever the case may be. You know, you
- 21:18start to see a heighten the level of concern because of certain indicators that someone
- 21:23is you know you and people see those things, whether they recognize them or
- 21:27not, they're there. A lot of times we choose to ignore them because
- 21:30we don't want to have to take action, and so we just blow it
- 21:33off. And you know, no harm, no foul, which is not
- 21:36the way to react. And then we start to see other indicators and ultimately
- 21:41there there's a trigger. There's some trigger in their life and it may be
- 21:45totally external to what you're exposed to, but you know, we talk about
- 21:49some of them, I mean, and financial issues, bankruptcies, divorce,
- 21:56losing your home, and particularly with in when you start to lose your financial
- 22:00resources, you start to lose your place to live, you start to lose
- 22:04your start to lose your job, and a lot of that revolves around divorce.
- 22:10A bad divorce can just destroy people, men and women. Um,
- 22:14it happens more more so to men, but but to women as well.
- 22:18And then you and you know that's going on in their life, and then
- 22:21all of a sudden you have to lay them off because of job performance and
- 22:23then next thing you know, they're they're shooting the place up. And you
- 22:27just need to be aware of those things. I mean, it's so if
- 22:30you work there and your boss isn't doing anything about it, well then you
- 22:33have it. It's in comment upon you to watch your back, I mean,
- 22:37because they're not They may not come shoot the boss that come shoot you,
- 22:40but we've also talked about and have seen stories of, you know,
- 22:42in this case, Dan Marquelle was targeted for assassination, right, right.
- 22:47But we're also seeing across the country people see somebody in a nice car,
- 22:52they've got a handful of stuff they've just bought at the store. They just
- 22:56follow them home and they either take the car, or they take the car
- 23:00and break into the home. Follow the people right in and a home.
- 23:03Invade that level of awareness. I want to ask a very direct question.
- 23:07You've got your professional background. If I pick up the phone, if I'm
- 23:11on my phone, I'm saying and I call nine one one, I say,
- 23:14someone's following me, what's the likely response? Well, I don't.
- 23:18I don't know what the dispatcher's going to tell you, but I can tell
- 23:22you what you should do, and that is, if you think someone's following
- 23:26you, take a different route home, okay, or a different route where
- 23:29you're going on a very public area. Okay, go somewhere it's very public.
- 23:33Don't take a little side street, you know, take take a couple
- 23:37turns, stay in the public area. If you are that concern, you
- 23:41ask nine one one police, have an officer meet me. I'm going to
- 23:45pull over in this very public area at this location, or just drive to
- 23:48the police department, or drive to the sheriff's office. I mean, you
- 23:51should really know where those places are. If you see a law enforcement officer
- 23:53somewhere pull in the parking a lot next to them, you know, if
- 23:57you have an opportunity to be any of this stuff. I'm a big fan
- 24:00of putting the cameras in your cars now. I mean, for one hundred
- 24:03bucks, you can put a camera that mounts on your dash with a disk.
- 24:07It records everything in the front and everything in the back. Okay car,
- 24:11and if you're in a crash, you have evidence that wasn't your fault.
- 24:14I put them on Plantation Security and every one of our trucks has and
- 24:18they're rear facing as well. Well. Yes I don't have that in all
- 24:21my vehicles, but those are the ones that I'm implementing. Now. Is
- 24:23I've got You can get them, you mind on Amazon, like one hundred
- 24:26bucks one hundred and twenty bucks for a good high definition four K cameras recording
- 24:33everything around you, you know, in the front end, the back.
- 24:34If something hits you or somebody hits your car while you're not in it,
- 24:37it can activate and you get video and audio as well. And the same
- 24:44reason cops wear body cameras have a you know, plugs in. You run
- 24:48a cord around there. It's very easy to plug in and plugs in the
- 24:51ciaretteliner or a USB port and stuff like that and outside the box thinking good
- 24:56stuff. Thank you Charlie Strickling with the Talent Training Group. My guess remember
