- 1:21Speaker 2: Hello mate, somebody just sent me a text seed you've
- 1:23Speaker 2: been bloody sick of the last few days? Have you?
- 1:27Speaker 3: Who me a listener? No? No, it would have been
- 1:31Speaker 3: cousin Jamie who's been sick. That's why you know. That's
- 1:33Speaker 3: why I'm fronting up.
- 1:34Speaker 2: Oh actually, yeah, probably they got their wires crossed there.
- 1:37Speaker 2: Now listen, now that I've established that you're well and
- 1:39Speaker 2: able to talk to us, the farm gate prices for
- 1:43Speaker 2: the lamb and the beef right, we're pretty happy with them.
- 1:45Speaker 2: They're looking good. But why are you worried that we
- 1:47Speaker 2: shouldn't get too carried away about this?
- 1:50Speaker 3: Well, I think it's just about all about keeping it
- 1:52Speaker 3: a bit in perspective. And there's this fandangle thing called
- 1:55Speaker 3: the Global Uncertainty Scale, which I'm sure we've heard of,
- 1:58Speaker 3: and it's undergone a massive spike in you know, far
- 2:03Speaker 3: bigger than some of the global events that we've had
- 2:05Speaker 3: and say, the last couple of decades. But this is
- 2:07Speaker 3: the global certainly from Iran, Palestine, Ukraine, Trump or moves
- 2:11Speaker 3: et cetera, et cetera. And I guess what we're seeing
- 2:15Speaker 3: is a result of this, or alongside this is the
- 2:18Speaker 3: global trade now being controlled by power rather than rules.
- 2:23Speaker 3: Is just the end of the golden weather, so to speak.
- 2:25Speaker 3: So the results we've got a week in KIW dollar
- 2:28Speaker 3: because of this global uncertainty, and this inflates our returns
- 2:32Speaker 3: quite markedly. In the case of lamb, could you could
- 2:34Speaker 3: nail it at about twenty percent, and if we measure
- 2:38Speaker 3: today's prices against the CPI over the last ten years,
- 2:41Speaker 3: that will wipe off another thirty percent. So yes, let's
- 2:44Speaker 3: get all excited about three hundred dollars lambs that you
- 2:49Speaker 3: can get from the farm gate. And you know people
- 2:51Speaker 3: that were, you know, producing two thousand lambs. It's not
- 2:55Speaker 3: a bad, bad payday. But look, it's arguably the truth
- 3:00Speaker 3: is more like one hundred and fifty to one hundred
- 3:02Speaker 3: and eighty. So a prudent planner would be using that
- 3:05Speaker 3: as a guide for future budgeting. Let's hope that is
- 3:08Speaker 3: the case.
- 3:09Speaker 2: What is it that we're teaching the Aussies about animal welfare?
- 3:13Speaker 3: Yeah, so look, animal welfare are critical to market at vantage,
- 3:17Speaker 3: and we've got the you know, this very was previously
- 3:21Speaker 3: acceptable practice of mules ing. That's the barbaric practice really
- 3:28Speaker 3: cutting off the wrinkly backsides of marinos. And if you
- 3:31Speaker 3: can think, you know, it's all a bit eradicated here,
- 3:34Speaker 3: great work by MPI, you know, and farmers and ensures
- 3:38Speaker 3: a premium on all things marino, obviously the wall. But
- 3:41Speaker 3: in Australia they're still practicing this thing called mulesing on
- 3:45Speaker 3: eighty percent of all farms. And look, okay, they do
- 3:48Speaker 3: have a far greater fly problem in the heat and
- 3:51Speaker 3: the dust. They're a lot worse than us. But you
- 3:53Speaker 3: know that's possibly why their uptake is so slow. But
- 3:56Speaker 3: you know, they are really dragging the chain and we're
- 3:59Speaker 3: showing them how it's done. And end of the day, look,
- 4:02Speaker 3: price and quality of product will always be the major
- 4:05Speaker 3: determinants of demand globally, but refugee via ethics and standards
- 4:10Speaker 3: that will always count for plenty. And you know, if
- 4:13Speaker 3: we're getting those sort of things right and if we
- 4:15Speaker 3: can make good with fresh water and reducing methane emissions.
- 4:20Speaker 3: I mean, you know, Bob's your uncle. We're going to
- 4:22Speaker 3: leave the world which we can, so do you go.
- 4:25Speaker 2: I love their optimism for it. Yeah, I love it. Amos.
- 4:27Speaker 2: Thank you very much. Look after yourself and keep well
- 4:30Speaker 2: as it turns out. Hamus Macaye, host of the Country.
