- 0:07This is Finding God at Work.
- 0:14Just a reminder that Finding God at Work
- 0:16isn't just a podcast, it's also an online
- 0:18course.

- 0:27Our current series is wholehearted, Becoming Healthier Christians
- 0:31at Work.
- 0:33We're going to start talking about depression in
- 0:35this episode and the next couple episodes.
- 0:38I have personal experience with depression, and so
- 0:41I need a couple episodes because I have
- 0:43a lot that I want to say.
- 0:44So I don't know how many episodes we'll
- 0:46do on each of the other topics we're
- 0:47digging into as we kind of look at
- 0:49different mental health challenges in Christian perspective, but
- 0:52we're going to need at least a few
- 0:53for depression.
- 0:55So bear with me.
- 0:55If you don't experience depression, and this isn't
- 0:58a big concern for you personally, it still
- 1:00probably affects one or more of the people
- 1:03you see regularly in the workplace.
- 1:05A Gallup survey from a couple of years
- 1:07ago shows that almost one out of three
- 1:10US adults has been diagnosed with depression at
- 1:12some point during their lifetime, and those numbers
- 1:15have been on the rise and, as you
- 1:17may know, are rising faster among young adults.
- 1:20So this is really common.
- 1:21I imagine that a lot of my listeners
- 1:23are experiencing depression themselves.
- 1:26So even if you're not, you can engage
- 1:28with a level of empathy here as we
- 1:31walk through this question in the next few
- 1:33episodes.
- 1:34When we think about depression and work specifically,
- 1:38depression makes work harder to get done.
- 1:42This is at least one of the common
- 1:43symptoms of depression.
- 1:45Since things are moving more slowly, it's harder
- 1:48to execute the things that you intend to
- 1:51do.
- 1:51This is definitely part of my experience with
- 1:54depression.
- 1:54I've described it as walking through molasses.
- 1:58Sometimes I imagine my depression as a big
- 2:00dog, and I've nicknamed him Deppie, the depression
- 2:04dog.
- 2:05And so sometimes Deppie is just sitting on
- 2:07top of my chest when I wake up
- 2:09in the morning.
- 2:09It's really hard to shove him off and
- 2:12go to work.
- 2:13But even when I get to work, Deppie
- 2:14is right there alongside me, and sometimes he's
- 2:16bigger and sometimes he's smaller, and sometimes he
- 2:19puts himself right between me and the computer
- 2:21and the work I'm trying to get done.
- 2:23It's really hard.
- 2:24It's hard to focus.
- 2:24It's hard to put out the level and
- 2:27quality of work that I want to do.
- 2:31My specific experience with depression is unique to
- 2:34me.
- 2:34It's not everybody's, but I hope it can
- 2:37be a helpful illustration as we talk about
- 2:39broader patterns that a lot of people experience.
- 2:42My words in the next few episodes will
- 2:44kind of be tinged with what is depression
- 2:47like for someone who is a high achiever
- 2:49and is frustrated that their depression is keeping
- 2:51them from achieving as much as they normally
- 2:53feel like they should, because that's how my
- 2:57personality works and how my experience of depression
- 2:59works.
- 2:59But it takes lots of different forms.
- 3:02And one thing that I think is so
- 3:03important when we talk about depression is acceptance.
- 3:08What does it mean to accept that we
- 3:10are depressed, to accept the limitations that depression
- 3:14imposes on us, and to accept God's love
- 3:16for us in the midst of our weakness?
- 3:19So I want to go to a passage.
- 3:21It's not explicitly about depression.
- 3:23It might connect with depression.
- 3:25We're not sure it's from the life of
- 3:26the Apostle Paul.
- 3:27It seems as though he had some experiences
- 3:29that might be along the lines of depression
- 3:31at different points.
- 3:32But regardless, this is still a helpful paradigm
- 3:35that we find in this passage that we
- 3:37can apply to the situation of experiencing depression
- 3:39in the workplace.
- 3:41This is from 2 Corinthians chapter 12.
- 3:44So the greater context here is that Paul
- 3:46is facing off against some other apostles who
- 3:49disagree with him.
- 3:50They think he has the wrong message.
- 3:52They're basically trying to defame him, bring down
- 3:53his reputation with the Corinthians, the ones who
- 3:56are receiving this letter from Paul.
- 3:58So Paul decides to defend his reputation.
- 4:00And as part of this, he's appealing to
- 4:02different experiences that he's had, including experiences of
- 4:05visions and revelations from God.
- 4:07But then he takes this very interesting move
- 4:09and he says counterintuitively that he doesn't want
- 4:11to boast about those.
- 4:12He doesn't want to brag about that.
- 4:14He wants to talk about his weaknesses.
- 4:16So we'll pick this up in chapter 12
- 4:19verse 6.
- 4:21Even if I should choose to boast, I
- 4:23would not be a fool because I would
- 4:25be speaking the truth.
- 4:26But I refrain so no one will think
- 4:28more of me than is warranted by what
- 4:30I do or say, or because of these
- 4:32surpassingly great revelations.
- 4:34Therefore, in order to keep me from becoming
- 4:36conceited, I was given a thorn in my
- 4:38flesh, a messenger of Satan to torment me.
- 4:41Three times I pleaded with the Lord to
- 4:43take it away from me.
- 4:44But he said to me, my grace is
- 4:46sufficient for you, for my power is made
- 4:49perfect in weakness.
- 4:51Therefore, I will boast all the more gladly
- 4:53about my weaknesses so that Christ's power may
- 4:56rest on me.
- 4:57That is why for Christ's sake, I delight
- 5:00in weaknesses and insults and hardships and persecutions
- 5:04and difficulties.
- 5:06For when I am weak, then I am
- 5:08strong.
- 5:12The specific verse that I want to focus
- 5:13on here is where Paul says in verse
- 5:168, three times I pleaded with the Lord
- 5:18to take it away from me.
- 5:21Okay, so whatever this thorn is, Paul calls
- 5:23it a messenger of Satan.
- 5:25He puts it in the same category as
- 5:26hardships and persecutions and difficulties.
- 5:29So he's using this metaphor of a thorn.
- 5:30He doesn't specify what it is.
- 5:32It's obviously some source of great pain in
- 5:34his life or perhaps some kind of limitation.
- 5:37People have debated what it was.
- 5:39It's kind of beside the point.
- 5:40Whatever it was, it was something that was
- 5:42debilitating to Paul.
- 5:44And so he very naturally pleads with God
- 5:47to take it away.
- 5:48It says three times I pleaded with the
- 5:49Lord to take it away from me.
- 5:51So Paul's first attitude about this debilitating condition
- 5:55that he has is I just want to
- 5:58get rid of it.
- 6:00I just want to get rid of it.
- 6:01And that is often my response to any
- 6:04kind of limitation or debilitating condition that I
- 6:06face, including my walk with depression.
- 6:09So when I first started to experience depressive
- 6:12symptoms, I was not all about going to
- 6:15therapy or getting treatment for them or anything
- 6:17like that.
- 6:18I was just like, what can I do
- 6:19to get over this?
- 6:20How can I just get beyond this?
- 6:22How can I master this in some way
- 6:24so that I can get to the other
- 6:25side of it?
- 6:27The difficulty here is that basically what that
- 6:30amounted to for me was denying that I
- 6:33had depression.
- 6:34Now, I'm not saying that Paul was denying
- 6:36that he had this thorn.
- 6:37He was pleading for God to take it
- 6:38away and it wasn't being taken away.
- 6:40But that for me is sometimes that attitude,
- 6:43that willful attitude of just rejecting something.
- 6:46Okay, I don't want to receive this.
- 6:48I don't want to experience this.
- 6:49So I'm just going to pretend it's not
- 6:51the case.
- 6:51And I've fallen into this kind of encyclical
- 6:53pattern in my life.
- 6:54I have a seasonal quality to my depression.
- 6:57It gets worse in the winter and better
- 6:58in the spring.
- 6:59And so it's like, okay, I'm doing better
- 7:01now.
- 7:01So I never have to worry about it
- 7:02again.
- 7:03And it took me a few years before
- 7:04I was like, maybe I have a chronic
- 7:06condition that I could prepare for before it
- 7:09gets worse again in the winter.
- 7:11And so it was just, it was tough
- 7:13because my first response was rejection, denial, rather
- 7:16than accepting that I have depression.
- 7:20And so I want to start there for
- 7:22anybody who's listening, where you might be wondering
- 7:24if you have depression, maybe you face different
- 7:26difficulties in the workplace, but you're not sure
- 7:28if it amounts to depression.
- 7:30And it can be really helpful just to
- 7:32name something to get a diagnosis.
- 7:34And of course, an official diagnosis is something
- 7:36we would get from a doctor or from
- 7:38a therapist or counselor.
- 7:40But I'm just going to read the definition
- 7:42of depression from the Mayo Clinic website, just
- 7:44in case that definition is helpful.
- 7:47Depression is a mood disorder that causes a
- 7:49persistent feeling of sadness and loss of interest.
- 7:52Also called major depressive disorder or clinical depression,
- 7:55it affects how you feel, think, and behave,
- 7:58and can lead to a variety of emotional
- 7:59and physical problems.
- 8:01You may have trouble doing normal day-to
- 8:03-day activities, and sometimes you may feel as
- 8:05if life isn't worth living.
- 8:08They go on and list some of the
- 8:09symptoms, such as feelings of sadness, emptiness, angry
- 8:13outbursts, irritability, loss of interest in normal activities,
- 8:18sleep disturbances, tiredness and lack of energy.
- 8:21So even small tasks take extra effort, reduced
- 8:24appetite, anxiety, agitation or restlessness, slowed thinking, speaking
- 8:29or body movements, feelings of worthlessness or guilt,
- 8:33trouble thinking, concentrating, frequent recurrent thoughts of death,
- 8:37suicidal thoughts, suicide attempts or suicide.
- 8:41Okay, so lots of different symptoms there.
- 8:43But as I was going through that list,
- 8:45if you checked off like four or five
- 8:47of those, if you're like, oh yeah, I'm
- 8:48anxious a lot and I feel like I'm
- 8:50moving really slowly and I have trouble concentrating,
- 8:52and also I'm just kind of feeling empty,
- 8:54it's like there is a decent chance that
- 8:57you are experiencing something along the lines of
- 8:59depression.
- 9:00Even if it's not major depressive disorder, that'd
- 9:03be a good thing to talk to a
- 9:04therapist about or your doctor about and see
- 9:06what next steps there might be to figure
- 9:08out what's going on with you.
- 9:10Again, it might be something different, but that's
- 9:12why it's good to talk about symptoms with
- 9:13somebody that can help you get a good
- 9:16diagnosis of whatever it is you're facing.
- 9:19So that's the first thing, the first step
- 9:21on the way to healing is acceptance.
- 9:24Denial does not actually help us move into
- 9:25healing.
- 9:27Okay, but when we think about what acceptance
- 9:30means, how it plays out in the workplace
- 9:33specifically, acceptance also means accepting the limitations that
- 9:37depression imposes on us, which I just hate,
- 9:41I hate accepting limitations.
- 9:44I'm the kind of person who early in
- 9:46my career in my 20s, I would always
- 9:48stay super late at the office just to
- 9:49get stuff done, just so I could say
- 9:51I had it done.
- 9:51It'd be better to achieve 120% even
- 9:54if I'm working longer hours or missing out
- 9:56on family activities.
- 9:57And that was something I kind of had
- 9:59to unlearn and realize how to set better
- 10:01boundaries with work as time went on.
- 10:03But one thing that bugs me about this,
- 10:07about the limitations that depression imposes is for
- 10:10me, because depression has like a seasonal aspect
- 10:13to it, it's not exactly the same all
- 10:15the time.
- 10:16I know what it's like when I'm in
- 10:18a high performance mode.
- 10:19I know how much I can get done
- 10:21when I'm feeling energized.
- 10:23And then when I'm depressed, I just can't
- 10:25do it.
- 10:25Like I just can't do the same stuff
- 10:27that I do when I'm energized.
- 10:28And so it feels like the limitations are
- 10:30stupid, right?
- 10:31It's not like a permanent feature of my
- 10:33personality.
- 10:34It's not like, oh, I'm just not like
- 10:35that kind of achiever.
- 10:36It's like, no, I am that kind of
- 10:38achiever and I just can't do it because
- 10:39of the stupid depression.
- 10:41And so, I mean, and when I'm depressed,
- 10:43I probably don't even enunciate it with that
- 10:45level of emphatic energy because I'm depressed.
- 10:49So it's more like, oh, I just can't
- 10:50do it because I'm depressed.
- 10:52The limitations feel stupid.
- 10:53They feel pointless.
- 10:54Like I shouldn't have to deal with these
- 10:55limitations.
- 10:56I should be able to just get everything
- 10:57done.
- 10:58And one of my therapists was really helpful.
- 11:00He was like, Chris, you feel like you
- 11:03have to bat a thousand every day.
- 11:04You feel like you have to give 110
- 11:06% every day.
- 11:08What if some days you don't have that
- 11:09much gas in the tank?
- 11:11Like what if some days you only have
- 11:12like 35% of your maximum productivity available
- 11:16to you?
- 11:18And that was tough.
- 11:19I was like, that's stupid.
- 11:20But as we continued to talk and unpack
- 11:22that, I realized, wow, that's super freeing that
- 11:25I actually, I am not at peak performance
- 11:29every single day of my life.
- 11:31And that's okay.
- 11:33It is okay to accept that there will
- 11:35be limitations, even limitations that feel stupid because
- 11:38of my depression and that will affect my
- 11:40work.
- 11:41Okay, so then that kind of raises the
- 11:43question.
- 11:44What does that mean in terms of your
- 11:45work environment?
- 11:47How do you respond?
- 11:49And again, every person's situation is different.
- 11:51But one thing is in as much as
- 11:54you have some say over your workload to
- 11:58be okay with turning it down a notch
- 12:01when you're in a season of serious depression.
- 12:04So if you have a lot of things
- 12:05on your plate, can you in some way
- 12:08rearrange your work so that you have some
- 12:10fewer things on your plate because it's gonna
- 12:12take longer to get through things if you're
- 12:13walking through molasses every day or if Deputy
- 12:16of the Depression Dog is nosing in between
- 12:18you and your keyboard in the middle of
- 12:20every work meeting.
- 12:22Depression has real effects on our capacity to
- 12:26produce, to be productive.
- 12:28And so it's okay to take that into
- 12:30account when you're delineating your plans for a
- 12:32given day or given week.
- 12:34Now, obviously, that might involve conversations with colleagues
- 12:37and your boss as well.
- 12:39And this is gonna depend on how empathetic
- 12:42and emotionally mature your boss is and also
- 12:45just on the culture of your workplace.
- 12:47But one thing I've found is usually I
- 12:51am more hesitant to share something than my
- 12:54boss is to hear it.
- 12:55So like I waited for a long time
- 12:57back when I was at the mortgage company
- 12:58before I started talking with my boss about
- 13:00my experience of depression.
- 13:01And then as soon as I opened up
- 13:02about it, he was like, my son struggles
- 13:03with that.
- 13:05What can I do to help, right?
- 13:06Like he was just so immediately ready to
- 13:09make adaptations in my work schedule to help
- 13:11me figure this out.
- 13:12I wish I had talked to him earlier.
- 13:14And so then because of that lesson, as
- 13:16I move forward into my new employer where
- 13:18I now work at the food bank, I
- 13:20was honest kind of right off the bat
- 13:22with my boss there.
- 13:23And that was super helpful.
- 13:25And she was empathetic and understanding as well.
- 13:28So obviously, you may not have such amazing
- 13:31bosses, but do you know that for a
- 13:34fact or are you just afraid of that?
- 13:35Are you just afraid that your boss isn't
- 13:36going to be empathetic?
- 13:38What would it be like, again, based on
- 13:39your read of how trustworthy your boss is,
- 13:43to reveal a little bit to them at
- 13:45least and say like, hey, this is what
- 13:46I'm going through and maybe make a request
- 13:49for some sort of accommodation, whether that's a
- 13:51change in projects or hours or something else.
- 13:56Okay, again, if you're like a high achiever
- 13:58like me, it's just the humility of even
- 14:02entertaining the idea that you would ever come
- 14:05to a boss and say that you're doing
- 14:06less than 120%.
- 14:08That's the key piece.
- 14:10That's so hard is, oh, I wish I
- 14:13could just impress everybody.
- 14:14I don't want to have to ask for
- 14:15help.
- 14:16Okay, so now this brings us back to
- 14:18the passage.
- 14:19What does the Lord say to Paul in
- 14:21this experience?
- 14:21When he's pleading for God to take this
- 14:23experience, whatever it is, his thorn away, three
- 14:28times I pleaded with the Lord to take
- 14:29it away from me, but he said to
- 14:31me, my grace is sufficient for you, for
- 14:35my power is made perfect in weakness.
- 14:39My grace is sufficient for you.
- 14:42That is God's word for every follower of
- 14:45Jesus who's facing depression and limitations in their
- 14:48productivity because of depression.
- 14:51My grace is sufficient for you.
- 14:53You do not have to hit it out
- 14:55of the park every single day.
- 14:56You do not have to give 120%
- 14:57every single minute.
- 14:59You are going to face limitations and God's
- 15:02grace is sufficient for you.
- 15:04His power is made perfect in weakness.
- 15:09Part of what I dug into with my
- 15:11therapist as I tried to figure out why
- 15:13is it so hard for me to accept
- 15:14that I have limitations is understanding, okay, behind
- 15:18that desire to impress people is also a
- 15:21certain self-concept.
- 15:23For me, there was a sense that me
- 15:25accomplishing things is what gives me value.
- 15:28Me getting things done is what makes me
- 15:30important.
- 15:31My productivity is what makes me matter in
- 15:33the workplace and everywhere else in my life.
- 15:36And I realized that that is not the
- 15:39teaching of scripture.
- 15:41The teaching of scripture is not that our
- 15:43work gives us value, although work itself is
- 15:45valuable.
- 15:46Yes, the teaching of scripture is that God
- 15:48deeply loves us because He created us in
- 15:52His image, because He redeemed us in Jesus
- 15:54Christ, because God is love always and faithfully
- 15:58and without wavering, no matter how up or
- 16:01down we are.
- 16:03And if that's true, then having the humility,
- 16:08having the courage to open up a little
- 16:11bit and admit that I'm depressed and receive
- 16:13something from possibly a boss or coworker or
- 16:16someone else I'm asking for help, that can
- 16:19be a form of accepting God's love for
- 16:22me in my weaknesses.
- 16:24That His grace is sufficient for me.
- 16:27That His power is made perfect in weakness.
- 16:29That when I have that humility to ask
- 16:31for help, it becomes clearer that the true
- 16:34productivity of my work isn't just about me
- 16:36and how impressive I am.
- 16:38It's about how God's grace works through me,
- 16:40even in the work I'm doing every day,
- 16:42to bring something beautiful about in the world.
- 16:45It's not about me at the end of
- 16:46the day.
- 16:47It's about God's purposes and God can accomplish
- 16:49His purposes even through weak people.
- 16:52That's actually His modus operandi.
- 16:54That's His MO.
- 16:55God likes to get things done with people
- 16:58who are limited and flawed and sometimes depressed.
- 17:02That's what He does because He's gracious, because
- 17:05He's loving, because He wants to include us
- 17:07even when we're far from our best.
- 17:10Okay, so we can see in this passage
- 17:13this encouragement to a kind of acceptance of
- 17:16receiving grace, of knowing that God's power works
- 17:19even in weakness.
- 17:21But then Paul takes it a step further.
- 17:22And I kind of don't like this step.
- 17:24I don't know.
- 17:24I kind of wish this verse wasn't here.
- 17:26Paul says, therefore I will boast all the
- 17:28more gladly about my weaknesses so that Christ's
- 17:31power may rest on me.
- 17:34So he doesn't just stop with God has
- 17:36grace for our limitations.
- 17:37He says, okay, you got to press into
- 17:39that.
- 17:39You got to own it.
- 17:40You got to say, I will boast all
- 17:42the more gladly about my weaknesses so that
- 17:43Christ's power may rest on me.
- 17:45He's saying, when we acknowledge our weaknesses even
- 17:48more boldly, when we press into them even
- 17:50more fiercely, when we are honest about them
- 17:52even more courageously, that then that somehow paradoxically
- 17:56opens up more of Christ's power to rest
- 17:59on us.
- 18:01Somehow the power of Jesus Himself as the
- 18:03Messiah connects with us in our experience even
- 18:07more fully when we just admit that we're
- 18:09weak and that we have problems.
- 18:11So I just want to say that as
- 18:12an encouragement to you as kind of our
- 18:14first thought.
- 18:15We're letting Jesus be our anthropologist, right?
- 18:17We're letting Jesus tell us what it's like
- 18:19to be a healthy human being.
- 18:20And here, when Jesus the Messiah came to
- 18:23Paul in this vision and was teaching him
- 18:25what it means to be a healthy human
- 18:26being.
- 18:27He said, my grace is sufficient for you
- 18:30for my power is made perfect in weakness.
- 18:34That's what we can receive as we step
- 18:36into navigating all the ups and downs of
- 18:39depression as disciples of Jesus in the workplace
- 18:41and everywhere else.
- 18:46Lord Jesus, thank you that your grace is
- 18:48sufficient for us.
- 18:49Help us to believe that, help us to
- 18:51own that, help us like Paul even to
- 18:53go further and boast in that to brag
- 18:56about how weak we are because we trust
- 18:58that it's not about us being impressive.
- 19:00It's not about us willfully having our own
- 19:03way.
- 19:04It's about you.
- 19:05It's about your love being made manifest in
- 19:08the world.
- 19:08Even through our work that we do imperfectly
- 19:11and weekly when we feel depressed.
- 19:13Show us how to own these things in
- 19:15appropriate and confident ways in our work relationships.
- 19:18Show us how to welcome you when we
- 19:21feel so down.
- 19:23Jesus, do your work in us as we
- 19:24do our work with you.
- 19:31Thanks for listening.
