Latest / Early Edition with Ryan Bridge / Sam Ackerman: Sports Commentator on Dave Rennie's first All Blacks Squad
Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: All black squad naming four new faces Dave Rennie's first
- 0:03Speaker 1: squad to play in the Nation's championship. Let's go to
- 0:05Speaker 1: Sam Mackaman's sports commentator, Sam, good morning, right, looking strong?
- 0:10Speaker 1: What are your thoughts?
- 0:12Speaker 2: Yeah, it's a squad. This would have most all black
- 0:14Speaker 2: fans going okay. He wants to play an optimistic Ford
- 0:17Speaker 2: thinking brand of Raby. Will this team can do it? So?
- 0:20Speaker 2: Thirty four players, four new caps, as you say, But
- 0:23Speaker 2: what find I find interesting is if there hadn't been
- 0:25Speaker 2: a change of coach, how different would these squads be?
- 0:28Speaker 2: I would say kind of a little bit similar. What
- 0:30Speaker 2: the key is is who goes from the thirty four
- 0:33Speaker 2: into the fifteen? The best example, the first fives are
- 0:36Speaker 2: the same first fives you expect almost anyone to pick
- 0:40Speaker 2: as a selection. But instead of going for Boden Barrett,
- 0:42Speaker 2: will he try something new? Go for Reuben Love, who
- 0:45Speaker 2: is just the mastermind that drove the Hurricanes to their
- 0:48Speaker 2: extraordinary Super Rabia victory. That's the difference from this talent pool.
- 0:53Speaker 2: Will he then make brave choices over who goes into
- 0:57Speaker 2: that fifteen?
- 0:57Speaker 1: Quite cool to see how much of an impact that
- 1:00Speaker 1: Hurricanes team is having on the All Blacks.
- 1:03Speaker 2: Eleven players out of you know, obviously when zonly fifteen
- 1:06Speaker 2: on the field, you know it's a fair few to
- 1:07Speaker 2: get selected and a few are considered unlucky as well. Ryan,
- 1:11Speaker 2: So when you are that dominant, it is great to
- 1:13Speaker 2: see that rewarded as well. I think only one member
- 1:16Speaker 2: of their back line wasn't selected for this after they
- 1:19Speaker 2: tore things up, so it is yeah, it's great that.
- 1:21Speaker 2: I think New Zealand rugby and All Black fans want
- 1:25Speaker 2: to see that hurricane style of play played a test level.
- 1:29Speaker 2: Easier said than done, that absolutely.
- 1:31Speaker 1: Now this is the nation's championship. What about the tour
- 1:34Speaker 1: to South Africa? Is this an indication of the team
- 1:36Speaker 1: that would go or is it just you know you've
- 1:38Speaker 1: tested out and then you see hate where you get to.
- 1:41Speaker 2: Well, you'd say of the thirty four, that'd all be
- 1:44Speaker 2: in pretty good shot of going. Ryan, they take a
- 1:46Speaker 2: forty four man squad to that trip. Was the three
- 1:49Speaker 2: tests on a tour as well as the tour matches
- 1:51Speaker 2: against the provincial unions in and around South Africa. So
- 1:56Speaker 2: those who are condeemed unlucky to miss out are pretty
- 1:59Speaker 2: good chances still going on that tour, but this is
- 2:01Speaker 2: an indication of where where Rennie and Co want to
- 2:04Speaker 2: see their footing played. Originally, did you.
- 2:06Speaker 1: Say forty four? Will there be any rugby players left
- 2:08Speaker 1: in New Zealand once they take that?
- 2:10Speaker 2: Well, I've just been giving a new pair of boots
- 2:14Speaker 2: just in case, Ryan, I hope you've got one as well.
- 2:16Speaker 2: So yeah, it'll be sure, will be interesting. Yeah, but
- 2:19Speaker 2: that does help soften the blow for those like Rica,
- 2:21Speaker 2: Joanne and Dupery Carifi who didn't get selected on this occasion,
- 2:25Speaker 2: because there is still an opportunity this year to force
- 2:28Speaker 2: your way into the All Blacks.
- 2:29Speaker 1: All right, Sam Mackham and sports commentator with us on
- 2:31Speaker 1: the AB Squad Naming. Good to have you on the
- 2:33Speaker 1: show as always Sam. For more from early edition with
