Transcript
- 0:31[SPEAKER_00]: What's up everybody and welcome to another episode of Scouting the Finn's part of the three-archeper carry podcast Network and all support of the five reason sports network Everco host who's Tom Patel enjoyed me tonight is coach Smith or the co-host of Scouting the Finn's coach.
- 0:48[SPEAKER_00]: How are we doing tonight?
- 0:51[SPEAKER_01]: Hey, doing great.
- 0:52[SPEAKER_01]: You know in the thick of football season finally best time of the year.
- 0:56[SPEAKER_01]: I feel like all that I'm doing these days is watching film whether it's from our
- 1:01[SPEAKER_01]: Our practice is a little high school or circling back and watching some dolphins film.
- 1:05[SPEAKER_01]: So excited to be here again with you as always and talking some dolphins football and breaking down some film.
- 1:11[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, you, you had put up a video breaking down the offensive line and offensive performance against the
- 1:20[SPEAKER_00]: Chicago Bears, there was a lot of uproar recently with the joint practices with the Detroit Lions.
- 1:25[SPEAKER_00]: A lot of Lions beat reporters and writers were saying that the practice was quote unquote, love cited and the dolphins kind of look sloppy and couldn't get anything done.
- 1:36[SPEAKER_00]: I don't necessarily see this as too big of a concern because you're supposed to make mistakes and practices.
- 1:43[SPEAKER_00]: You're supposed to rehash them.
- 1:44[SPEAKER_00]: You're supposed to watch film and get better at it.
- 1:47[SPEAKER_00]: So see what they look like.
- 1:49[SPEAKER_00]: Um, uh, Thursday morning and joint practice this against the line.
- 1:54[SPEAKER_00]: It's coach.
- 1:55[SPEAKER_00]: I know you went on a little bit of a rant on Twitter earlier.
- 1:59[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 2:01[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, I get them.
- 2:03[SPEAKER_01]: We got to talk about something.
- 2:04[SPEAKER_01]: It's football season.
- 2:05[SPEAKER_01]: But, you know, if you've been to those training practices as you and I have been at, like you can understand, um, when they get out there and they do their team sessions,
- 2:19[SPEAKER_01]: it's not it's not anything like playing in a game right when you get into a game and you receive a kick off and you get into the flow of the game the play calling the way that you sequence plays you don't get that in a training camp practice you get maybe five to ten plays with your number one unit before you move on to your number two's and when you do that you're not looking to sequence plays and set up the defense and
- 2:45[SPEAKER_01]: take advantage of all that.
- 2:46[SPEAKER_01]: You're just trying to get certain plays or certain concepts on film because what's more important to the team than what happens on that field is the ability to put that on video and to be able to go back into the in the facilities and to review that film and see where they need to improve.
- 3:05[SPEAKER_01]: And that was the same thing out of that first preseason game.
- 3:08[SPEAKER_01]: You know, a lot of talk about them running the ball four times three of those from the two you are lying not being able to punch it in
- 3:14[SPEAKER_01]: on that opening drive.
- 3:16[SPEAKER_01]: But now you have three, you know, second goal to go situations from the two, where you have film that you can sit in there, you can break it down and you can fix it so that next time, you know, hopefully we're in that situation, we have the answers that we didn't have before.
- 3:35[SPEAKER_01]: And I would much prefer that over just going out there, running a play action, dumping it down to the Tanner Conner in the open like Zach Wilson had the opportunity to do.
- 3:44[SPEAKER_01]: because you don't learn anything from that.
- 3:46[SPEAKER_01]: And I would much rather be able to come out of a preseason game saying, we have this, this, and this, that we need to work on, that we need to improve on, than just, you know, winning the scoreboard in a preseason game.
- 3:59[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, that's not the most important thing in a preseason game.
- 4:02[SPEAKER_00]: And then once again, a lot of upper of the dolphins, not being able to convert on short yard is imminently.
- 4:10[SPEAKER_00]: I was guilty of that, but you got to see why because they wanted to work on it, they wanted to improve on it.
- 4:17[SPEAKER_00]: And I'm sure they went back to the Phil room and
- 4:20[SPEAKER_00]: all of the offensive linemen and tied in and running back to the latter series got my most likely might have got an ear full of their miss blocks their miss assignments and what they forgot to do one thing that came out of that and that's uh it's one of our
- 4:38[SPEAKER_00]: other dolphins podcast not on the network, but the die bar podcast with some of the other guys.
- 4:44[SPEAKER_00]: They had Warren Sharp on and Warren Sharp unloaded his trade secret saying that the dolphins need to run more eleven personnel in short yard.
- 4:58[SPEAKER_00]: situations need to throw a whole bunch of stats saying that the dolphins were one of the best in the league on situations that they needed to want to two yards.
- 5:07[SPEAKER_00]: And when they ran through a level of personnel, they were pretty successful.
- 5:10[SPEAKER_00]: They were top five top ten in the NFL just for twenty twenty four and twenty two to twenty four.
- 5:17[SPEAKER_00]: At the end, he clarified saying that he just found those stats and now over two hours before the show.
- 5:23[SPEAKER_00]: So I took it upon myself to research it myself with what I could.
- 5:27[SPEAKER_00]: I scraped the data, found it and I posted it on Twitter.
- 5:32[SPEAKER_00]: So look guys, Mike McDaniel is not going to change his philosophy just so he can chase metrics and change up his entire offense that he has done and worked on tirelessly for the last three years.
- 5:46[SPEAKER_00]: He's not running finesse eleven personnel on third and short.
- 5:51[SPEAKER_00]: He's going to be heavy so the threat of the play action is there.
- 5:55[SPEAKER_00]: He's not changing that.
- 5:57[SPEAKER_00]: Unless the offensive one, whether it be the left side or the right side, if they can handle it.
- 6:05[SPEAKER_00]: The research that I found in the distance to first down since twenty twenty to the start of the Mike McDaniel era
- 6:13[SPEAKER_00]: But golfins have ran the second least amount in a eleven personnel, which was fifty one place.
- 6:21[SPEAKER_00]: And here's where they stand.
- 6:23[SPEAKER_00]: They stand twenty-fifth in EPA per play.
- 6:27[SPEAKER_00]: Thirty-second in success rate.
- 6:29[SPEAKER_00]: And when we talk about success rate, we're talking about yards that they need to get to be successful.
- 6:35[SPEAKER_00]: So on first down, whether it's first and ten, they need fifty percent of those yards.
- 6:40[SPEAKER_00]: So if it's ten yards, they need five.
- 6:43[SPEAKER_00]: Let's leave it at that.
- 6:45[SPEAKER_00]: You can break it up into ten increments.
- 6:47[SPEAKER_00]: If it's stepping down, they need to be able to get around sixty percent of those yards.
- 6:56[SPEAKER_00]: If it's third and fourth down, they need to get one hundred percent of those yards.
- 7:02[SPEAKER_00]: So, if it's third and three, third and two, they have a successful run play or series.
- 7:09[SPEAKER_00]: They need to get all of those yards or a little bit more.
- 7:12[SPEAKER_00]: to be successful.
- 7:14[SPEAKER_00]: I don't necessarily focus on EPA because it's focused on situation, but the main goal to be successful or if you're chasing metrics to be the best is to get a hundred percent success rate, get all those yards that you need.
- 7:30[SPEAKER_00]: All right, so thirty-second in success rate, twenty-fifth in EPA per plate, and the most important metric is third-down conversions.
- 7:38[SPEAKER_00]: Since twenty twenty two running out of eleven personnel and short yardage now I class by short yardage between zero to three yards.
- 7:47[SPEAKER_00]: They are thirty second last dead last in the league with forty percent third down conversions.
- 7:54[SPEAKER_00]: Now in twenty twenty four.
- 7:58[SPEAKER_00]: The only run twelve plays out of eleven personnel and short yardage and that's excluding any scrambles by the quarterback.
- 8:05[SPEAKER_00]: There were six in EPA per play, twenty first in success rate and twenty fourth in third down conversion.
- 8:12[SPEAKER_00]: Still not any good now.
- 8:15[SPEAKER_00]: One more eleven in short yardage.
- 8:17[SPEAKER_00]: Okay, but it hasn't turned out successful.
- 8:21[SPEAKER_00]: On the flip side in twenty one personnel as Warren Sharpe said, they ran the most and that is true.
- 8:29[SPEAKER_00]: Since twenty twenty two, they've ran eighty six plays in twenty one personnel, which is two running backs.
- 8:36[SPEAKER_00]: One, uh, one wide receiver.
- 8:38[SPEAKER_00]: So basically, alcohol or running back and one tight end.
- 8:43[SPEAKER_00]: or one wide receiver, in this case, however you want to classify it.
- 8:47[SPEAKER_00]: I'm sorry, two running backs, one tied it.
- 8:50[SPEAKER_00]: They ranked twenty second in the EPA per play.
- 8:53[SPEAKER_00]: It's one eighth in success rate and tied twelve in third down conversion.
- 8:59[SPEAKER_00]: Now, not a lot of teams run in twenty one personnel that I twelveth ranking is with a whole bunch of other twelve to fifteen teams.
- 9:10[SPEAKER_00]: And just
- 9:11[SPEAKER_00]: Twenty-twenty-four, two plays.
- 9:14[SPEAKER_00]: They ran six plays, twelve plays, and twenty-twenty-four.
- 9:19[SPEAKER_00]: So those plays resulted in a touchdown.
- 9:21[SPEAKER_00]: So the data is a little bit skewed in this.
- 9:24[SPEAKER_00]: In twenty twenty four, they ranked second and EPA per play, second and success rate and one hundred percent.
- 9:31[SPEAKER_00]: So you have to take into account where on the field they're running the ball, if it's on the goal line fifty-yard line or what or even before midfield, you have to take all of that into account.
- 9:46[SPEAKER_00]: Now if it's third and short, be tweetable.
- 9:50[SPEAKER_00]: If it's starting short and you're not even at midfield, you're not necessarily going to run the ball.
- 9:54[SPEAKER_00]: You're trying to get more yards.
- 9:57[SPEAKER_00]: So that way, you can at least score some points.
- 9:59[SPEAKER_00]: So the dolphins are more likely to pass the ball.
- 10:03[SPEAKER_00]: Now, the dolphins in one, two, one personnel, as I said, from twenty, twenty, four.
- 10:13[SPEAKER_00]: I already gave out those statistics, twenty-second in EPA per play, twenty-eighth in success rate, both in bird down conversion.
- 10:21[SPEAKER_00]: Yes, from, twenty-two to twenty-twenty-four, received the EPA per play, nineteen-thin success rate, fourth, and third down conversions.
- 10:32[SPEAKER_00]: So, do they change their philosophy up coach or do they stick with it based on these metrics, if we're evaluating this?
- 10:43[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, I mean, it's kind of a conversation we've had the entire office, because I'm like, Mike Daniels, that I don't expect him to change what he's doing.
- 10:52[SPEAKER_01]: I expect that twenty-one personnel outside zone to still be the same Mike Daniel that we've seen in the previous years.
- 11:02[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, we have talked about them trying to run a little bit more out of eleven personal.
- 11:07[SPEAKER_00]: Yes, that's going to be there, but
- 11:09[SPEAKER_00]: there are certain situations where it will call for it.
- 11:14[SPEAKER_00]: Might we see more eleven personal runs?
- 11:17[SPEAKER_00]: I think so.
- 11:18[SPEAKER_00]: They have a different wider receiver group.
- 11:20[SPEAKER_00]: They have a change in the types of running backs and the types of tight ends they have.
- 11:25[SPEAKER_00]: So the person now in terms of players is a little bit different.
- 11:29[SPEAKER_00]: I think the schematic is going to be the same but a little bit more diversity.
- 11:34[SPEAKER_00]: Now let's get to where
- 11:37[SPEAKER_00]: We actually want to talk about is the running back runs from the previous season game.
- 11:42[SPEAKER_00]: So we'll be taking a look at Jalen Wright and Ali Gordon and this comes back to one of my hot takes from the offseason saying that Ali Gordon could push Jalen Wright for running back number two and potentially potentially in a couple years.
- 12:00[SPEAKER_00]: going to be running back one if Devon H.A.
- 12:03[SPEAKER_00]: catches the ball a little bit more.
- 12:06[SPEAKER_00]: So let's dig right into the tape coach.
- 12:11[SPEAKER_01]: Yes, sir.
- 12:13[SPEAKER_01]: Let's all right, bringing it up now.
- 12:16[SPEAKER_01]: So we're going to start with the Jalen Wright runs.
- 12:20[SPEAKER_01]: I thought I had this in order, but we had to, because this is the first run from the eight yard line that Jalen Wright gets.
- 12:29[SPEAKER_01]: So this is going to be a counter concept.
- 12:32[SPEAKER_01]: So, you know, when you're talking about counter, even though jail and ready starting the same side, you're going to see him step to the inside and then go play side, you're going to get Jonas of I and Nia pulling across.
- 12:45[SPEAKER_01]: Also, you're going to have Julian Hill.
- 12:47[SPEAKER_01]: Everybody else should be trying to wash this down.
- 12:50[SPEAKER_01]: And what we're going to see here is that Julian Hill is supposed to be your kick guy kicking out.
- 12:55[SPEAKER_01]: Forty five with like to see survive in Nia.
- 12:58[SPEAKER_01]: get around the edge there, but because of Pharaoh Brown here on the edge, Savionite kind of gets caught up there and is not able to loop around and get number forty four.
- 13:11[SPEAKER_01]: So we get a bit of a nice, nice cup back there by Jalen Wright and able to get down to the two yard line.
- 13:18[SPEAKER_00]: So roll back to the clip because this is actually the second one for jailing, right?
- 13:23[SPEAKER_00]: They look like they're in twelve personnel.
- 13:26[SPEAKER_00]: The EPA on this play by the way is a point four.
- 13:29[SPEAKER_00]: He needs eight yards.
- 13:31[SPEAKER_00]: He gets six.
- 13:32[SPEAKER_00]: So by the metrics, this is a successful run because I believe this is a
- 13:39[SPEAKER_00]: First down run.
- 13:40[SPEAKER_00]: So this is a successful play right there by Jalen Wright.
- 13:44[SPEAKER_00]: He was able to go more so on an ad hoc cutback and gain yards added that which is something you want to see if the holes not there.
- 13:52[SPEAKER_00]: Jalen Wright is able to make lemonade out of lemons.
- 13:55[SPEAKER_00]: Now if you go back slow brawl it where Jonas of Inaia is able
- 14:02[SPEAKER_00]: So you get to and where tied in Julian Hill messes up.
- 14:07[SPEAKER_00]: So look, he's coming out.
- 14:08[SPEAKER_00]: We'll pause it right there once again.
- 14:11[SPEAKER_00]: Let's take a look at the motion and maybe potentially the motion might have disrupted the timing of this run play.
- 14:18[SPEAKER_00]: Thank you for this slow motion.
- 14:20[SPEAKER_00]: So.
- 14:23[SPEAKER_00]: During the snap, he's still running and it looks like some type of jet motion.
- 14:29[SPEAKER_00]: Now with the motion, if you roll it back to the beginning of the clip, I think, forty-five, he was just staying stagnant the whole time.
- 14:36[SPEAKER_00]: He did not move with Julian Hill at all.
- 14:41[SPEAKER_00]: So yeah, there you go, that's what it is.
- 14:44[SPEAKER_00]: Number forty five has a free run.
- 14:46[SPEAKER_00]: And if, you know, Julian, if they waited a little bit for Julian Hill to get a little bit deeper, deeper running, he might, number forty five might not have had that big of a running start.
- 15:02[SPEAKER_00]: And Savannah and I might have been able to climb up.
- 15:05[SPEAKER_00]: to know us well, so block him off so that way the cutback lane would be there.
- 15:11[SPEAKER_00]: We wouldn't know it because it didn't happen, but this is one of those things where sometimes the motion does not necessarily do its job effectively.
- 15:22[SPEAKER_00]: This is what I, that's what I gathered from the play.
- 15:25[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, so this one might actually be the first one who saw him.
- 15:31[SPEAKER_01]: This might be the first carry that Jalen Wright had in the game.
- 15:34[SPEAKER_01]: This one of those seven team.
- 15:39[SPEAKER_01]: Let's see.
- 15:41[SPEAKER_00]: Yes, it is.
- 15:42[SPEAKER_01]: Yes, it looks that way.
- 15:43[SPEAKER_01]: All right.
- 15:44[SPEAKER_01]: So this is going to be let's see as we start here.
- 15:49[SPEAKER_01]: So this is inside zone.
- 15:52[SPEAKER_01]: Right.
- 15:52[SPEAKER_01]: And so inside zone Jalen Wright's going to be going to the right side here.
- 15:59[SPEAKER_01]: Got some motion coming across.
- 16:01[SPEAKER_01]: So we're going to get split flow action.
- 16:05[SPEAKER_01]: Idea here is that this guy coming in motion is, you know, hold number twenty two here.
- 16:10[SPEAKER_01]: You're going to see if that obviously doesn't happen.
- 16:13[SPEAKER_01]: And then you're going to get Larry Borham blocking out here at number forty five.
- 16:18[SPEAKER_01]: James Daniels out number sixty nine.
- 16:20[SPEAKER_01]: And if you watch the two of them, the way they start is similar, right?
- 16:26[SPEAKER_01]: And when Jalen Wright
- 16:28[SPEAKER_01]: We see we got a bobbled snap up here as well.
- 16:30[SPEAKER_01]: But as Jalen Wright is taking this hand off, he should be reading these two blocks, thinking that we're cutting it back through here, because you have the combo of Aaron Bruner, Brewer, and Savaya Nio working up to number forty four.
- 16:46[SPEAKER_01]: But you can see that as we roll a little further, that Borham gets a little too far outside and gets beat to the inside here, right?
- 16:54[SPEAKER_01]: And that's what really forces
- 16:57[SPEAKER_01]: Jalen right to cut this back even further.
- 17:00[SPEAKER_01]: And I mean, he gets what is that two yards there, but had Borham been able to maintain that block a little better than I think that we get Jalen right getting more vertical, right?
- 17:13[SPEAKER_01]: You have Daniels in good position.
- 17:16[SPEAKER_01]: I think he fits in behind here and this turns into more of a four to five yard run than the two yard run that it ends as.
- 17:25[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, I don't think Janel Wright would have been able to get to that pile.
- 17:28[SPEAKER_00]: I think that whoever was the backside tied end coming through the front side.
- 17:33[SPEAKER_00]: I think that is who is the one coming on the motion.
- 17:39[SPEAKER_00]: That's not Julian Hill.
- 17:41[SPEAKER_01]: The motion is Westbrook, Akine.
- 17:43[SPEAKER_01]: Okay.
- 17:44[SPEAKER_01]: Julian Hill is the one that's on the split flow action.
- 17:47[SPEAKER_01]: Gotcha.
- 17:47[SPEAKER_00]: So who's on the split flow action?
- 17:49[SPEAKER_00]: Nick Westbrook, Akine.
- 17:51[SPEAKER_00]: I don't know how to play or how the motion is called, but he should have been the blocker.
- 17:56[SPEAKER_00]: On that, meanwhile, the blocker comes out as a free release.
- 18:00[SPEAKER_00]: And once again, that's one of those things where the motion that should have helped on the play, it pretty much did not.
- 18:10[SPEAKER_00]: This lets you a negative point nine EPA.
- 18:13[SPEAKER_00]: This is a second and four and jail and right got zero yards on this.
- 18:22[SPEAKER_01]: All right, and then our next one here.
- 18:29[SPEAKER_01]: Is this one even a runner that full of wrong play?
- 18:32[SPEAKER_01]: Let's see.
- 18:32[SPEAKER_01]: Nope.
- 18:33[SPEAKER_01]: All right, we'll move on to the next one.
- 18:35[SPEAKER_01]: All right, now we're back on track.
- 18:37[SPEAKER_01]: So now this was after, yep, this is the second and two from the Chicago two.
- 18:45[SPEAKER_01]: And on this one, I believe we're going to get duo if I remember correctly.
- 18:51[SPEAKER_01]: Let's play.
- 18:51[SPEAKER_01]: Yep.
- 18:52[SPEAKER_01]: So we can tell it's duo because everybody on the line is stepping one way.
- 18:57[SPEAKER_01]: In this case, the entire line is stepping to the left.
- 19:00[SPEAKER_01]: And Jalen Wright is coming back to the right side.
- 19:03[SPEAKER_01]: And the main field block that you have on this one is going to be right here.
- 19:08[SPEAKER_01]: And that's Julian Hill is not able to get his head across.
- 19:14[SPEAKER_01]: Right, we see that Pharaoh Brown has a similar block, but he doesn't give up.
- 19:17[SPEAKER_01]: penetration, whereas Julian Hill is giving up that penetration.
- 19:22[SPEAKER_01]: If Julian Hill can wash his guy a little flat with Pharaoh Brown does, then I think that you're able to hit this off to the right side a little more.
- 19:32[SPEAKER_01]: And you can see that Jalen right kind of gets there late, but by then, right, there's too much traffic there and ends up getting tackled short of the line.
- 19:42[SPEAKER_00]: Now, do you wonder on these types of plays during preseason during camp, you could potentially be on a roster bubble?
- 19:49[SPEAKER_00]: I don't think Jim writes on the roster bubble, but to make it known, do you think he could have potentially bounced this outside or was he just trying to follow the direction of where the blocking was supposed to go to?
- 19:59[SPEAKER_01]: I think he was trying to follow the direction of the blocking.
- 20:04[SPEAKER_01]: You get into the problem here that if we're talking about a roster bubble guy that's
- 20:12[SPEAKER_01]: in this position and then tries to bounce it and ends up getting tackled for a three yard loss or something like that.
- 20:20[SPEAKER_01]: Then that's obviously an even worse situation than what they end up with.
- 20:25[SPEAKER_01]: Especially when you run these inside zone and do a place, it's not too often that you have success when you start going forward and then bounce it to the outside.
- 20:34[SPEAKER_01]: You obviously have the Devon HNs guys like that that are just
- 20:38[SPEAKER_01]: special in that regard, but, you know, even in Jalen Wright's situation where he is competing for running back to reps.
- 20:47[SPEAKER_01]: I don't think that it makes a lot of sense here for him to try to do that.
- 20:50[SPEAKER_01]: There's just too much risk of losing even more yards if you do that.
- 20:56[SPEAKER_00]: I think you can also take a look at Westbrook a Keenan on this play too.
- 21:00[SPEAKER_00]: Right after he inserts into the attach formation right behind the tight end and Larry Borham.
- 21:09[SPEAKER_00]: His assignment was to take on any defensive back that was coming from the outside.
- 21:16[SPEAKER_00]: Now, look, he could have potentially put his hands on Noah's wall right there.
- 21:22[SPEAKER_00]: But his main blocking assignment is supposed to be number twenty nine.
- 21:26[SPEAKER_00]: Take anyone that's coming from the outside.
- 21:30[SPEAKER_00]: Now, from there, what this dual block is supposed to do is that Julian Hill is supposed to take that first level defender out.
- 21:39[SPEAKER_00]: make sure he's not part of the play and then potentially work up to the second level.
- 21:44[SPEAKER_00]: If the whole is made, just the play could not pan out.
- 21:48[SPEAKER_00]: I was supposed to because of the field blog that said, like you'll be at home.
- 21:52[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, and this is the type of stuff that we, you know, we're talking about a little bit earlier that when you have this on film, like they could have run this twenty times in practice and never seen it exactly this way.
- 22:04[SPEAKER_01]: But now you have this on tape, right?
- 22:06[SPEAKER_01]: And like you said about Westbrookini, how do you just stayed
- 22:09[SPEAKER_01]: towards the inside here gotten more towards Julian Hill's right hip here and just sealed.
- 22:16[SPEAKER_01]: So on the on the inside there right then maybe we're talking about right with a one on one versus twenty nine or thirty six year instead of trying to break.
- 22:25[SPEAKER_01]: So that's just the kind of stuff that you can get on tape when we run these plays in preseason.
- 22:32[SPEAKER_00]: And you know the funny thing is is that for most of jail and rights runs.
- 22:38[SPEAKER_00]: all but two of them came from twelve personnel, which leaves me to believe they're trying to experiment something in the run game out of twelve personnel.
- 22:52[SPEAKER_01]: Definitely interesting note for that.
- 22:54[SPEAKER_01]: All right, so we get the next one here.
- 22:56[SPEAKER_01]: So this is again going to be duo just a little different action here.
- 23:01[SPEAKER_01]: So now we're getting it's again duo to the right, but we're going to get
- 23:08[SPEAKER_01]: Julian Hill coming across essentially in what the real Alec Engled would have in, you know, kind of split flow action here, but entire offensive line stepping to the left.
- 23:17[SPEAKER_01]: Jalen Wright coming to the right should get the kick out here from Julian Hill.
- 23:23[SPEAKER_01]: You can see that we get number forty seven is coming through kind of free.
- 23:28[SPEAKER_01]: And I think that that is on Borham, right?
- 23:31[SPEAKER_01]: It's the combo here is Daniel's in Borham.
- 23:33[SPEAKER_01]: through number ninety six up to number forty four so you know or up to forty seven you know so perfect world here I think what you see happen is that we get a little more vertical movement here and that double team is able to consume forty four or forty seven and we stay vertical we don't get that and then in addition to that we get the rookie over here savaya and I haven't a really ugly rap here you know
- 24:04[SPEAKER_01]: gets a little too far inside, leans out a little bit.
- 24:07[SPEAKER_01]: Mm-hmm.
- 24:08[SPEAKER_00]: And this is better, isn't it?
- 24:10[SPEAKER_00]: Yep.
- 24:11[SPEAKER_01]: Yep.
- 24:11[SPEAKER_01]: So now when Jalen writes, trying to cut back from the linebacker that we couldn't get off off from the combo, he's also dealing with Booker there and not a whole lot for the running back to do on that one.
- 24:24[SPEAKER_00]: All right, Eric, if you roll it back and this is gonna be another conversation, we'll circle back to previous seasons and this offseason.
- 24:33[SPEAKER_00]: Look at how the motion on the cross, Julian Hill just did.
- 24:39[SPEAKER_00]: Look at how Noah's well moves with the motion and that leaves a gap opened up for forty seven to get to do.
- 24:48[SPEAKER_00]: Now, a lot of the blocks that I watched last season from twenty twenty four
- 24:52[SPEAKER_00]: Due to these motions and we saw it on tape last year is they're motioning late with the man and the gap potentially opens up because in these dual blocks.
- 25:03[SPEAKER_00]: The offensive line and work together on the first level, then whoever's assignment is able to get to the second level, that takes time.
- 25:11[SPEAKER_00]: And sometimes there's empty space for the gap rushers to get through to the first level without even being touched as we see on this play.
- 25:21[SPEAKER_00]: And this play led to a negative on one point four EPA.
- 25:26[SPEAKER_00]: This is a third down needed one yard.
- 25:30[SPEAKER_00]: Dale and Wright was able to get zero yards on this.
- 25:33[SPEAKER_00]: So this was not a successful play.
- 25:37[SPEAKER_00]: So you can attribute this to blocking potentially from Larry Borm.
- 25:42[SPEAKER_00]: But my first and main culprit with this is the motion that was called on this play.
- 25:49[SPEAKER_00]: Maybe potentially if that cross motion was done with Julian Hill,
- 25:54[SPEAKER_00]: And he comes attached to the side of Larry Borham.
- 25:58[SPEAKER_00]: Maybe the play might have looked a little bit differently.
- 26:03[SPEAKER_01]: Yes, sir.
- 26:04[SPEAKER_01]: All right.
- 26:05[SPEAKER_01]: So now we get the fourth down play.
- 26:09[SPEAKER_01]: And this one is again going to be dual, but now we're going the opposite way.
- 26:14[SPEAKER_01]: And you can see at the entire as the ball is snapped here.
- 26:18[SPEAKER_01]: Once we get there, right, entire offensive line is stepping to the right.
- 26:22[SPEAKER_01]: Jalen Wright is going to the left and if we look at the box count here, right, we've got one, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight, nine, ten.
- 26:33[SPEAKER_01]: You got all eleven players in the box, right?
- 26:37[SPEAKER_01]: And you take out the quarterbacks in the count, you take out the running back.
- 26:40[SPEAKER_01]: So you're negative two in terms of ability to run against this, right off the bat.
- 26:47[SPEAKER_01]: So clearly a situation where they were trying to get this on film.
- 26:52[SPEAKER_01]: I think that regular season they do something different.
- 26:55[SPEAKER_01]: But even with that, you know, as the ball snapped here, we looked the way these combination blocks are going to work.
- 27:03[SPEAKER_01]: It's going to be Savannah and Paul working up to number forty seven you know solo block here solo block here solo block there thirty six ends up as an unblocked player like twenty five is the other one that would technically get left unblocked and where I saw the issue on this one is I think you were supposed to have a combination block between Pharaoh Brown
- 27:29[SPEAKER_01]: and Julian Hill, three number ninety four to number forty four.
- 27:33[SPEAKER_01]: Yep, and he got West Virginia.
- 27:35[SPEAKER_01]: I think it's working two number twenty two.
- 27:38[SPEAKER_01]: You can see that combo never gets to forty four and he gets through untouched.
- 27:44[SPEAKER_01]: But what I think is happening here, right, is that when we look at Pharaoh Brown take on that block and we'll get body positioning, right, there is nowhere for Julian Hill to fit into this block, whereas
- 27:58[SPEAKER_01]: had Farrow Brown got his head on the other side.
- 28:02[SPEAKER_01]: Then that crazy opportunity for Julian Hill to fit in.
- 28:06[SPEAKER_01]: And I think that the two of them could have washed this down.
- 28:11[SPEAKER_01]: You've got a Q&A on twenty two.
- 28:14[SPEAKER_01]: And then I think you get into a situation where now you're asking Jalen right to beat number twenty five out here, a corner back one-on-one.
- 28:22[SPEAKER_01]: And you know, typically
- 28:24[SPEAKER_01]: Most offenses want to make cornerbacks, make tackles.
- 28:28[SPEAKER_01]: Obviously didn't work out in this scenario, but we're talking about the players that are going to be unblocked with the scheme, right?
- 28:37[SPEAKER_01]: It makes sense that we block this guy because he can he can come off the edge, right?
- 28:41[SPEAKER_01]: So we leave thirty six unblocked.
- 28:43[SPEAKER_01]: We leave twenty five unblocked and then we have the other nine accounted for as long as Pharaoh Brown and Julian Hill.
- 28:52[SPEAKER_01]: execute their combo block, but they don't in this case.
- 28:55[SPEAKER_00]: So here's where on film or what I think they're trying to get to here.
- 29:04[SPEAKER_00]: Usually, they run these types of blocks and runs with Alec Engel and the full back position.
- 29:10[SPEAKER_00]: What he does is from the full back position.
- 29:12[SPEAKER_00]: See, emotions.
- 29:14[SPEAKER_00]: And then he runs and shoots through either the A or the B gap and blocks.
- 29:18[SPEAKER_00]: And that that is able to create that rushing lane or that gap.
- 29:23[SPEAKER_00]: Here, I think they're just experimenting with two tight ends at the line as extra blockers to see if the first level blocks can potentially work against these heavy sets on these short yardage runs and on these short yardage conversions that they need to get bail definitely.
- 29:43[SPEAKER_00]: But here's where I think this could potentially change.
- 29:47[SPEAKER_00]: Where'd you see Julian Hill on the line?
- 29:50[SPEAKER_00]: So if you pause the play,
- 29:51[SPEAKER_00]: right at the beginning area.
- 29:52[SPEAKER_00]: If you pause the play.
- 29:54[SPEAKER_00]: If you, yeah, pause the play right now.
- 29:57[SPEAKER_00]: If you take Julian Hill off the line and you insert him at full back.
- 30:02[SPEAKER_00]: So just imagine it, imagine it.
- 30:04[SPEAKER_00]: He motions a little bit back.
- 30:08[SPEAKER_00]: right behind Patrick Paul and the ball is snap.
- 30:13[SPEAKER_00]: He's shooting straight up through the gap where the blocker would potentially get through.
- 30:17[SPEAKER_00]: Now if you're taking a look through the front walls, you have eleven people.
- 30:21[SPEAKER_00]: You're taking
- 30:24[SPEAKER_00]: if it's the dual blocks sliding over to the right side, there's going to be the big gap open up and that's where Julian Hill would shoot through so that way he could get Noah so well.
- 30:39[SPEAKER_00]: That's where Nick Westbrookikini could take a defensive back or two and the dual block happens with Sparrow Brown working on ninety four and maybe the only unblocked guy.
- 30:54[SPEAKER_00]: would be number twenty two a smaller defensive back and jail right could potentially make work one on one.
- 31:02[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 31:02[SPEAKER_01]: All right.
- 31:05[SPEAKER_01]: Keep going.
- 31:07[SPEAKER_01]: All right.
- 31:07[SPEAKER_01]: So now we're on to.
- 31:10[SPEAKER_01]: So this is outside zone.
- 31:14[SPEAKER_01]: Right.
- 31:15[SPEAKER_01]: And it's kind of a different variation of it not one that I'm a huge fan of where they get going horizontal more than downhill.
- 31:24[SPEAKER_01]: You can see here that what we're getting is Tanner Conner is getting out to number forty five.
- 31:31[SPEAKER_01]: We've got Julian Hill, Larry Borm, working through number ninety up to forty four.
- 31:36[SPEAKER_01]: Key on Smith and Daniel Brunskill through ninety six.
- 31:40[SPEAKER_01]: Whatever that is up through forty seven and then we're just solo blocks on the backside here.
- 31:47[SPEAKER_01]: And you can see that as he's getting the ball right, he should be reading this defender first.
- 31:53[SPEAKER_01]: Clearly we have him sealed to the inside.
- 31:56[SPEAKER_01]: So we're looking to get to the next level.
- 32:00[SPEAKER_01]: Tanner Connor is giving a read that should take him right there, but we don't get much movement from Tanner Connor on that kick out block.
- 32:11[SPEAKER_01]: And we also have Larry Borham not able to stay on his defender very well, right?
- 32:19[SPEAKER_01]: that prevents us from having a lane to the outside here.
- 32:23[SPEAKER_01]: And then just kind of, you know, icing on top is that Brunsco gets too deep into this double team, right?
- 32:33[SPEAKER_01]: And this should be more like what these two are, right?
- 32:36[SPEAKER_01]: Where they both can have eyes on the linebacker here.
- 32:40[SPEAKER_01]: But as far in as Brunsco's, there's no way for him to see the linebacker.
- 32:44[SPEAKER_01]: You can see Key on Smith is looking to the linebacker.
- 32:49[SPEAKER_01]: And ideally, what you would have there would be Key on Smith taking number, ninety six with Brunskill falling off to the back side, right?
- 32:57[SPEAKER_01]: And if you, that's obviously a lot of stuff, right?
- 32:59[SPEAKER_01]: You need Tanner Conner to be better.
- 33:01[SPEAKER_01]: You need Larry Born to be better and you need the Smith and Brunskill combo to be better, right?
- 33:06[SPEAKER_01]: But you can see the potential of that play if they can, you know, look at this film and clean those things up a little bit.
- 33:21[SPEAKER_01]: and we'll keep moving.
- 33:27[SPEAKER_01]: Getting more outside zone here.
- 33:31[SPEAKER_00]: That was a good run by jail, right?
- 33:32[SPEAKER_00]: They're trying to bounce off.
- 33:34[SPEAKER_00]: That was actually a successful play.
- 33:36[SPEAKER_00]: That was a first and ten.
- 33:38[SPEAKER_00]: He got five yards out of that.
- 33:40[SPEAKER_00]: The EPA on that was zero.
- 33:41[SPEAKER_00]: So it was an absolute number.
- 33:44[SPEAKER_00]: But it was a successful play.
- 33:45[SPEAKER_00]: He was able to get fifty percent of the yards needed on first out.
- 33:50[SPEAKER_00]: Once again, that play is actually out of eleven personal.
- 33:55[SPEAKER_00]: Look at that.
- 33:57[SPEAKER_01]: Yes, it is.
- 33:59[SPEAKER_01]: So outside done again, we don't count this defender because he's a safety late walking up into the box.
- 34:07[SPEAKER_01]: But we get the split flow action from Pharaoh Brown solo block here, solo block here.
- 34:13[SPEAKER_01]: And then you've got Savannah and Daniel Brunskill working up to number forty seven.
- 34:19[SPEAKER_01]: And you can see it's doing a good job with that.
- 34:24[SPEAKER_00]: Oh, look at that block by Eric as a conman, no block, no rock.
- 34:28[SPEAKER_00]: That was a perfect perfect seal right there.
- 34:35[SPEAKER_01]: That's how you make corners make tackle.
- 34:37[SPEAKER_01]: You bring that wide receiver in to, like I said, he wasn't accounted for from the, you know, the base block in the scheme, but you have this wide receiver out here, pick off the safety, make the corner, make a tackle.
- 34:48[SPEAKER_01]: You know, if we're nitpicking at this a little bit, woulda like to see
- 34:55[SPEAKER_01]: jail and right be a little more decisive here and try to continue through there.
- 35:00[SPEAKER_01]: You know, the head of the station there ends up getting the extra yards.
- 35:04[SPEAKER_01]: But, you know, if we're talking about trying to, trying to, to always get those hidden yards, I, I wouldn't like to see him stay a little more downhill on that run.
- 35:17[SPEAKER_00]: I think that was an actual good sequence by Daniel Brunskill and Jonas of I. That is perfectly executed and how you want to get your dual block and then work up to the second level.
- 35:33[SPEAKER_00]: So by Naya, obviously he's moving laterally.
- 35:36[SPEAKER_00]: Brunskill has his hand on the zero tech.
- 35:39[SPEAKER_00]: So by Naya is able to get his hands on the zero tech and Brunskill moves up to the second level on Ruben Hippelite.
- 35:48[SPEAKER_00]: And yeah, maybe if Jalen Wright didn't hesitate, you could have potentially seen something up there, but I think because, whereas you call him a seals it off, he moves the defense back and he might have gotten two or three yards instead of the five.
- 36:05[SPEAKER_00]: Here.
- 36:07[SPEAKER_01]: All right, a couple more here for Jalen Wright.
- 36:11[SPEAKER_00]: Once again, eleven personnel.
- 36:13[SPEAKER_00]: This is second quarter on Chicago seven yard line.
- 36:19[SPEAKER_00]: He needs seven yards.
- 36:22[SPEAKER_00]: He gets seven yards successful play.
- 36:25[SPEAKER_00]: EPA as positive as a one point nine.
- 36:27[SPEAKER_01]: And this, this was in my opinion the best run that right had on the day.
- 36:33[SPEAKER_01]: And this is again going to be outside zone.
- 36:37[SPEAKER_01]: So we're getting, it's actually going to bore them.
- 36:39[SPEAKER_01]: And as you con, whether they're working the combo block up to the safety on that one.
- 36:46[SPEAKER_01]: And then you got Keyon Smith with the solo block here.
- 36:50[SPEAKER_01]: And then you've got Savaya Naya and Brunskyle again working the, working the double team there, or the combo up to number forty four.
- 36:59[SPEAKER_01]: A fetty is kind of put into a tough position here to try to cut this off.
- 37:06[SPEAKER_01]: would a like to see him just continue to wash that down all the way where Jalen Wright could have cut that back a little further.
- 37:14[SPEAKER_01]: But when you look at what Jalen Wright is doing here, the his ability to get vertical, you know, one of the coaching points when they're talking to the running backs on this is that by the third step, you want to make your decision and you want to make the cut by the fifth step.
- 37:30[SPEAKER_01]: So as we watch Jalen Wright get out of it here, right?
- 37:36[SPEAKER_01]: One, two, one, three, two, three, four, five on that fifth step in the middle of cutting, getting vertical and you can see how that pays off.
- 37:47[SPEAKER_01]: But even though we're not getting a great block from a fettie, the fact that he's staying on path for those five steps and then cutting gives him that ability to squeeze through and cross the goal line.
- 38:03[SPEAKER_00]: That was a good play by Jalen Wright right there.
- 38:06[SPEAKER_00]: And then the very last run by him was just a one yard run in twelve personnel on first and ten that gained a negative point five EPA in twelve personnel.
- 38:20[SPEAKER_01]: Yep.
- 38:21[SPEAKER_01]: So this is going to be outside zone once again.
- 38:23[SPEAKER_01]: And this is going to be two of the week side right no tight end on this side.
- 38:29[SPEAKER_01]: So we're getting solo block out here.
- 38:33[SPEAKER_01]: We're getting a combo block between Keyon Smith and Dan Brunskill.
- 38:37[SPEAKER_01]: And those two were doing okay on that, right?
- 38:40[SPEAKER_01]: Because we're they're comboing out to number thirty five.
- 38:43[SPEAKER_01]: You can see that Keyon's got his eyes out there.
- 38:46[SPEAKER_01]: Keyon is sliding off to number thirty five.
- 38:50[SPEAKER_01]: But Borum, earlier that Jackson Carmen is a little late there, right?
- 38:56[SPEAKER_01]: The motion helps a little bit with the linebackers.
- 38:59[SPEAKER_01]: should be right, Hayes fitting in here with Jackson Carmen, their combo in up to forty three and woulda like to see Carmen falling off now to get number forty three so that that cut back hits a little cleaner.
- 39:15[SPEAKER_01]: Obviously, it doesn't Carmen never gets to block and we end up with the run stuff there.
- 39:22[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, so I think on most of these plays with Jaylin right, not all of them aren't necessarily
- 39:29[SPEAKER_00]: place fault from what you can see by the metrics and just watching the game live on TV initially.
- 39:36[SPEAKER_00]: And this is why we're doing this film review to see what the issues were.
- 39:40[SPEAKER_00]: Sometimes it's blocking.
- 39:41[SPEAKER_00]: Sometimes it's motion.
- 39:44[SPEAKER_00]: Sometimes it's just the straight-up play design and the front they're facing.
- 39:48[SPEAKER_00]: This is why they're trying to get these plays on film in the pre-season.
- 39:51[SPEAKER_00]: So now let's move on to the eight runs by Ali Gordon.
- 39:58[SPEAKER_01]: All right, so this is the first one.
- 40:02[SPEAKER_01]: And this is gonna be, you know, probably here's most impressive.
- 40:05[SPEAKER_01]: You got that big broken tackle there.
- 40:07[SPEAKER_01]: This is gonna be outside zone to the right with some split flow actions.
- 40:11[SPEAKER_01]: So you get haze out here, the solo block.
- 40:15[SPEAKER_01]: You're gonna have, looks like pre- with a solo block.
- 40:20[SPEAKER_01]: And then you have Addison West and breeding Daniels are working the combo.
- 40:30[SPEAKER_01]: through to the linebacker.
- 40:32[SPEAKER_01]: And again, you have Isaiah McKenzie here, a little indecisive off the ball, you know, just kind of trying to see where his eyes are going.
- 40:42[SPEAKER_01]: He should be getting almost horizontal, sprinting to cut off number twenty seven here.
- 40:48[SPEAKER_01]: Right.
- 40:51[SPEAKER_01]: Kind of said he lacks that athleticism on the backside of this outside zone because
- 40:56[SPEAKER_01]: Ali reads this really well, right?
- 40:58[SPEAKER_01]: He sees it, he sees the cut back, hits that cut back lane, right?
- 41:03[SPEAKER_01]: Had we been able to get a little vertical movement on that linebacker that he gets through here, clean against number forty three, but he ends up making something out of it, which is something that we really didn't see a whole lot in two thousand twenty four is running backs that are able to, you know, break tackles and, you know, make things happen even when it's not perfect with the offense wide.
- 41:27[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, take a look at that orbit counter motion that actually took the corner.
- 41:33[SPEAKER_00]: That's follow him and even the linebacker number forty three.
- 41:37[SPEAKER_00]: He shifted a little bit towards the boundary side of the play and that initially helps.
- 41:49[SPEAKER_00]: Helps him hesitate a little bit.
- 41:50[SPEAKER_00]: I thought the center could have potentially once in number forty three, but that would have left him a thirty wide open.
- 41:56[SPEAKER_00]: That was good a good a good protection.
- 41:59[SPEAKER_00]: Good call by the center to get up to that level, but that that's step a hesitation.
- 42:07[SPEAKER_00]: helped a little bit.
- 42:08[SPEAKER_00]: That was just a good bounce off by all the court.
- 42:10[SPEAKER_00]: And the offensive line, they're did their job.
- 42:13[SPEAKER_00]: It was a clean enough lane.
- 42:16[SPEAKER_00]: Once again, and eleven personal, they were able to get up through their men to block.
- 42:23[SPEAKER_01]: Yep.
- 42:23[SPEAKER_01]: It's just one last thing on their right.
- 42:25[SPEAKER_01]: Like this number thirty is not part of the blocking call originally.
- 42:30[SPEAKER_01]: Right.
- 42:30[SPEAKER_01]: So that's why, you know, that combo is initially looking to get to forty three, right?
- 42:35[SPEAKER_01]: They're usually going to look
- 42:36[SPEAKER_01]: The first combination block you have is the first two linemen or solo.
- 42:41[SPEAKER_01]: This is the first combo that you have.
- 42:43[SPEAKER_01]: It's typically going to try to look to the first second level defender in the box.
- 42:48[SPEAKER_01]: So how do you've been up there the whole time?
- 42:50[SPEAKER_01]: And you can see West calling that out.
- 42:53[SPEAKER_01]: But this is where, you know, when you get your second and third line in there, you get a safety walk and a plate.
- 42:59[SPEAKER_01]: And this is where some of the communication issues can surface that, you know, now
- 43:04[SPEAKER_01]: We're not necessarily on the same page as to which linebacker requirement to on that.
- 43:09[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, then on the very, very far side of the field, why do receiver number, anyone, not sure who that is, he's able to hold his block up against the defensive back.
- 43:20[SPEAKER_00]: And if Ali Borden was able to burst through that, that could have been a nice, thirty, forty yard chum play.
- 43:28[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, sir.
- 43:29[SPEAKER_01]: Looks like that.
- 43:34[SPEAKER_01]: because that weasel looks like B.O.
- 43:36[SPEAKER_01]: Weasel.
- 43:36[SPEAKER_01]: All right.
- 43:37[SPEAKER_01]: So on to Gordon's next run here.
- 43:39[SPEAKER_00]: I love him personally.
- 43:41[SPEAKER_00]: Oh, again.
- 43:41[SPEAKER_00]: Yep.
- 43:42[SPEAKER_01]: So now we get outside zone again.
- 43:46[SPEAKER_01]: And again, like the way that Ollie is reading this, right?
- 43:51[SPEAKER_01]: Eyes go to this defense event immediately, right?
- 43:54[SPEAKER_01]: The first, the endman line of scrimmage.
- 43:56[SPEAKER_01]: And you can see at the combo between Ferro Brown, Ryan Hayes, clearly he's got outside leverage.
- 44:03[SPEAKER_01]: right so now our eyes go to here and we can see that prebe is getting that outside position and you can see the way this is starting to develop here that had ferro brown again been able to maintain that block continue to press him outside right we're pretty close to getting all the Gordon through there right and on a lane outside here instead ferro brown falls off have to get that late cut
- 44:33[SPEAKER_01]: And then we get some some backside pursuit there, but you know, I like what Ollie did on the play in terms of reading it.
- 44:41[SPEAKER_01]: And I like how close this was to being a big play if we just clean up a little bit there.
- 44:48[SPEAKER_00]: At that was a negative point three EPA.
- 44:53[SPEAKER_00]: That was first and ten.
- 44:54[SPEAKER_00]: He needed three yards.
- 44:56[SPEAKER_00]: That was right at the start of the fourth quarter.
- 45:00[SPEAKER_00]: That was an unsuccessful play.
- 45:02[SPEAKER_00]: He got what thirty percent of the yards needed.
- 45:12[SPEAKER_01]: Moving on again kind of a light formation here.
- 45:16[SPEAKER_01]: Well, do you have a type of any comes in?
- 45:17[SPEAKER_01]: So probably looking at a level of information.
- 45:20[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, level of personnel.
- 45:21[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 45:22[SPEAKER_01]: So now we're getting what's essentially a long trap is what we refer to this as, you know, if you were pulling and trying to trap an interior defender would just be a regular trap.
- 45:34[SPEAKER_01]: But because you're trying to kick out the end out, your pre was pulling across.
- 45:39[SPEAKER_01]: This is a long trap.
- 45:40[SPEAKER_01]: Everybody else is trying to block down and create a wall.
- 45:43[SPEAKER_01]: So this defense event actually plays this really well.
- 45:48[SPEAKER_01]: You can see that as Mackenzie is stepping inside the end, steps down inside.
- 45:54[SPEAKER_01]: And he does a good job of doing what we call wrong arming it, where he comes in with that outside shoulder and takes on that block.
- 46:02[SPEAKER_01]: And when a defender does that, it's almost impossible to be able to continue that kick out block.
- 46:08[SPEAKER_01]: I liked it, Ali, you know, may have seen that we have
- 46:12[SPEAKER_01]: and unblock defender out there and does a good job of using some vision to cut back on that and get something out of it still.
- 46:21[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, he tried to get skinny trying to go through that hole, but the defender ultimately got his hand on him.
- 46:28[SPEAKER_00]: And this is actually a staple plate for Miami either out of eleven or twenty one personnel that long trap by the left guard.
- 46:38[SPEAKER_00]: Liam, Ikenberg and Robert Jones did that a lot last season.
- 46:43[SPEAKER_00]: Sometimes they're successful, depending on the type of front.
- 46:46[SPEAKER_00]: and depending on where the defensive end was lined up at.
- 46:51[SPEAKER_00]: If it was a long trap and if the edge defender was more so on a line nine, the edge defender needs to crash in a little bit longer, giving that left guard or right guard, whichever way the long trap is happening, giving me that more time to set their body, set their feet and gain that leverage, where if that edge defender was going to long harm them,
- 47:15[SPEAKER_00]: They could get ready for it.
- 47:18[SPEAKER_01]: Yes, sir.
- 47:20[SPEAKER_01]: All right.
- 47:20[SPEAKER_01]: Let's keep rolling.
- 47:22[SPEAKER_01]: So now we're down near the goal line right now.
- 47:25[SPEAKER_01]: We have the last person now and getting some more outside zone here.
- 47:35[SPEAKER_01]: So this is the one.
- 47:36[SPEAKER_01]: I feel like Ollie got a little too anxious here on this one.
- 47:41[SPEAKER_01]: So we're going to get Pharaoh Brown coming in motion.
- 47:46[SPEAKER_01]: Right.
- 47:46[SPEAKER_01]: And let's roll that back one more time.
- 47:50[SPEAKER_01]: So I should go directly to this edge defender.
- 47:54[SPEAKER_01]: Clearly, right?
- 47:57[SPEAKER_01]: He's standing to the outside.
- 47:58[SPEAKER_01]: Eyes on the next defender.
- 48:00[SPEAKER_01]: He's got outside leverage.
- 48:01[SPEAKER_01]: We get eyes on this defender.
- 48:03[SPEAKER_01]: He's got outside leverage.
- 48:04[SPEAKER_01]: Now, looking at the gap here between pre and Addison West.
- 48:10[SPEAKER_01]: And you see, Brandon is trying to get in there on that combo block.
- 48:14[SPEAKER_01]: I felt like on this one,
- 48:15[SPEAKER_01]: had Ali Gordon just stayed on path and tried to pound it in there between pre and west, right?
- 48:23[SPEAKER_01]: There's not a lot there, but I feel like that may have been a better option than cutting back where we have, you know, one blocker and four defenders left on the backside there.
- 48:35[SPEAKER_01]: So this, you know, out of all of the runs that Gordon had, this was probably the one, and this is again, nitpicking, right,
- 48:43[SPEAKER_01]: Had we just stayed place out a little longer on this, I think would have been a better option for all of you here.
- 48:50[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, that's one of those rookie learning opportunities where Ollie Gordon needs to take a look at that at that film where he just said, try to let the play continue to develop and try to squeeze and fit into that hole.
- 49:05[SPEAKER_00]: Like he did on the play previously, I think he was trying to get to the touchdown trying to bulldoze his way like he did in college, but man, isn't the NFL?
- 49:14[SPEAKER_00]: These guys are going to be equally as heavy and stronger than Ollie Gordon.
- 49:22[SPEAKER_01]: four more to go for Ollie.
- 49:27[SPEAKER_00]: As also twelve personnel.
- 49:31[SPEAKER_01]: So now here we're getting it's an outside zone but it's got some wind back action to it right everybody starts to the right given that outside zone look we get a little bit over for suit here we get Hayden Roochie coming around right and
- 49:47[SPEAKER_01]: Obviously, would like to see him be able to power through and get there, but had he got a black him.
- 49:54[SPEAKER_01]: He got anything here.
- 49:56[SPEAKER_01]: If Ruchie got anything off fifty seven.
- 49:59[SPEAKER_01]: This was essentially a walking touchdown.
- 50:02[SPEAKER_01]: Um, so
- 50:05[SPEAKER_01]: And I guess maybe, you know, again, if you want to nitpick this little further, maybe you would like to see right take that further back, but I mean, Rooch has got to get at least a piece of fifty seven and I think we end up in the end zone on that.
- 50:17[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, but if you if you take a look at his eyes and where his feet are he are he has already made his decision within the third step.
- 50:23[SPEAKER_00]: So let's count the steps real quick, ready.
- 50:26[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, it's going to go.
- 50:31[SPEAKER_01]: So that's one, two, one.
- 50:34[SPEAKER_01]: Yep.
- 50:34[SPEAKER_01]: So he's wired it back.
- 50:36[SPEAKER_00]: Yep.
- 50:37[SPEAKER_00]: Fourth step, he makes the decision of where he wanted to go.
- 50:42[SPEAKER_00]: Not at the fifth.
- 50:43[SPEAKER_00]: If he just let, if Rootsie got his hands on him, if he watched him, he might have been able to get one yard or so might have not had been attached down, but he could have gained at least yardage, potentially squeezing.
- 50:57[SPEAKER_00]: And the other thing, if he,
- 51:00[SPEAKER_00]: reach out to the gold line there.
- 51:03[SPEAKER_00]: I'll be it.
- 51:04[SPEAKER_00]: It would be really hard if you reached out there in the ball crossed.
- 51:07[SPEAKER_00]: That still counts as a touchdown.
- 51:10[SPEAKER_01]: This is true.
- 51:11[SPEAKER_01]: All right.
- 51:13[SPEAKER_01]: So next one looks like we're supposed to golf personnel again.
- 51:18[SPEAKER_01]: So now we're getting that duo look from all the Gordon were the line.
- 51:24[SPEAKER_01]: Everybody is stepping to the left.
- 51:25[SPEAKER_01]: All is getting the downhill going to the right.
- 51:28[SPEAKER_01]: Getting nice movement between
- 51:30[SPEAKER_01]: West and breed in Daniels.
- 51:34[SPEAKER_00]: You guys.
- 51:37[SPEAKER_00]: This is the same exact play coach.
- 51:40[SPEAKER_00]: I think on that third down goal and where they ran that duo, where Julian, not Julian Hill, it was either Westbrook or Kenny or Julian Hill was coming across on a jet motion and they did not get their hands on the defender here.
- 51:59[SPEAKER_00]: Hayden Ruchi does, where the back side defender can't cut inside.
- 52:09[SPEAKER_00]: Absolutely.
- 52:10[SPEAKER_00]: So good opportunity for learning from the previous, previous mistake of his kind of heart.
- 52:19[SPEAKER_01]: Yep.
- 52:20[SPEAKER_01]: All right.
- 52:21[SPEAKER_01]: And then we get outside zone again here.
- 52:24[SPEAKER_01]: So on this one, right, we've talked about those number of steps a few times.
- 52:29[SPEAKER_01]: You know, if we watch the way the blocking develops on here, you got Mackenzie out here on a solo block, breathing Daniels on a solo, you have West and Preve that are working essentially across two number forty three, but what we have here is if you watch Mackenzie here, he gets no movement at all, running off the ball here, right?
- 52:52[SPEAKER_01]: And Gordon never really has an opportunity to get
- 52:56[SPEAKER_01]: You know, to finish his steps in the read, right?
- 52:58[SPEAKER_01]: So it's one, two, three, right?
- 53:04[SPEAKER_00]: He still came in.
- 53:05[SPEAKER_00]: Oh, the blocking pattern and then he has a taste because the blockers are not able to get up to the second level and maintain that that gap because right there that big gap is open for the taking, but he takes that third step.
- 53:19[SPEAKER_00]: He sees it and it slows him down and ultimately the gap closes down.
- 53:25[SPEAKER_01]: Well, I think what slows him down there is right here that Mackenzie's getting no movement at all on the edge here.
- 53:32[SPEAKER_01]: I think he's able to, you know, have a clean path there that I think that he does a little better job getting vertical, but because he has to essentially step over Mackenzie, I think that's what slows him down on this one.
- 53:51[SPEAKER_01]: All right, and then we'll wrap it up here with the last run that Ollie Gordon had.
- 53:56[SPEAKER_01]: So this is gonna be that long trap look again opposite way this time.
- 54:00[SPEAKER_01]: So it's braiding Daniels coming across.
- 54:03[SPEAKER_01]: Again, everybody's blocking down, right?
- 54:04[SPEAKER_01]: He's giving a little bit of a bump, but he is getting down number forty three.
- 54:09[SPEAKER_01]: Roochies climbing to fifty seven.
- 54:11[SPEAKER_01]: And again, right wrong arming that play is that defense event coming in with that right arm now makes it almost impossible to kick him out.
- 54:20[SPEAKER_01]: And you can see that Ali does solid job there of
- 54:25[SPEAKER_01]: being able to read that this time, right, react to it gets just outside before getting vertical again and had we had myrict doing a little better job of, or that's bald and Monterey bald one.
- 54:41[SPEAKER_01]: Little better job of getting inside number twenty seven here, right, then this could have been a really nice run where Gordon gets that junk cut to the left gets vertical and is either one on one with the safety or the corner
- 54:55[SPEAKER_01]: depending on if the wide receiver can get in there for the block.
- 55:01[SPEAKER_00]: So my question to you is coach, how do these offensive linemen try to neutralize the long arm on these on these strap concepts?
- 55:10[SPEAKER_01]: There's not a lot, I mean the bears in both of those played them very well.
- 55:14[SPEAKER_01]: So you know, when this happens, you get what's called a log technique, right?
- 55:19[SPEAKER_01]: And that's, you know, essentially you
- 55:23[SPEAKER_01]: kind of hook him and seal him to the inside.
- 55:25[SPEAKER_01]: And that's about all that you can do with this.
- 55:29[SPEAKER_01]: And this is ideal situation given what the defense did, right, in terms of braiding Daniels being able to essentially get the log block and seal him to the inside.
- 55:44[SPEAKER_01]: We'd like to see him stay a little better connected, but you have right reading that well, getting that jump cut outside of the log block.
- 55:53[SPEAKER_01]: and then getting vertical and had we just had that seal from Monterey Baldwin, right?
- 55:59[SPEAKER_01]: Then we're, you know, then we're not even talking about the kick out attempt.
- 56:05[SPEAKER_00]: So it looks like it was a myriad of things, but pretty much the same consistent team in the run game as to why some specific run plays did not work out the way they wanted it to or the way it was drawn up to.
- 56:22[SPEAKER_00]: Yes, sir.
- 56:24[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 56:26[SPEAKER_00]: Well, coach, your thoughts on how they can improve up against the lines.
- 56:31[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, I think it's just a continued emphasis of, you know, cleaning up the small details, right?
- 56:37[SPEAKER_01]: This preseason is about getting stuff on film.
- 56:40[SPEAKER_01]: We've obviously got new pieces.
- 56:42[SPEAKER_01]: I think if you look at, um,
- 56:45[SPEAKER_01]: you know, where we had a lot of mistakes, it wasn't Patrick Paul, it wasn't Aaron Brueer, and one of them was Julian Hill, but it's a lot of the new guys in the system and a lot of them that are new to this Shanahan McDaniel style outside zone scheme.
- 57:00[SPEAKER_01]: So I think that, you know, there's obviously a difference in pace when you look at a training camp practice or even a joint practice, you know, versus getting in a game, right?
- 57:10[SPEAKER_01]: So what I'll be looking for
- 57:12[SPEAKER_01]: as we get into game two of the preseason is, you know, are some of these combo blocks a little tighter.
- 57:18[SPEAKER_01]: You know, we, we saw on some of that that Brunskill didn't feel like he had his eyes in the right place with the combos.
- 57:24[SPEAKER_01]: Do we clean some of that stuff up?
- 57:26[SPEAKER_01]: Farrow Brown or we getting the head on the right side.
- 57:29[SPEAKER_01]: When we have help with the combo blocks, those are the type of things that I'll continue to be looking for as we move forward.
- 57:36[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, stick with us here on scouting the Finns for Coach and I and Eric as well when he's available on these film reviews.
- 57:43[SPEAKER_00]: We're going to continue.
- 57:44[SPEAKER_00]: These run game concepts throughout the season.
- 57:49[SPEAKER_00]: Alright, stick with us here on scouting the Finns part of the three-ish recovery podcast network.
- 57:54[SPEAKER_00]: Also part of the five reasons sports network.
- 57:58[SPEAKER_00]: Go Finns, baby.
