Transcript
- 0:04[SPEAKER_00]: Welcome to Three Yards Perkati, a podcast covering the Miami Dolphins and the NFL.
- 0:11[SPEAKER_00]: Now, here's your host, Chris, Alf, and Simon.
- 0:17[SPEAKER_02]: And we're on this three hours precarious.
- 0:19[SPEAKER_02]: This is our preview episode that we do every single week.
- 0:23[SPEAKER_02]: I'm afraid of our tag.
- 0:23[SPEAKER_02]: I mean, Clancy is not here as you know, he is an Italy.
- 0:27[SPEAKER_02]: And Chris Coffman is not here because he is, I want to say he's on assignment.
- 0:33[SPEAKER_02]: Kind of is on assignment right now.
- 0:36[SPEAKER_02]: So, and we have issues with our schedules.
- 0:39[SPEAKER_02]: So we had to go a little bit early, but in their stead, we have Mary Braith.
- 0:44[SPEAKER_02]: who you saw all off season on the off season and I see him on this show as he comes off the bench once again this is the second time you've come off the bench this season yes it is yep yep I'm I'm always ready to be called into the game elf yeah so but we're not thanking though we're not thanking on the three yards for carry part but guess the viewers will be the judge of
- 1:10[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, we're still doing, we're still doing four episodes a week, all right?
- 1:14[SPEAKER_02]: So we're giving you a lot of content.
- 1:15[SPEAKER_02]: There's no tanking around here, all right?
- 1:18[SPEAKER_02]: We win around here, but yes.
- 1:21[SPEAKER_02]: We have married brave.
- 1:23[SPEAKER_02]: As always, this show is brought to you by progressive.
- 1:26[SPEAKER_02]: America's number one auto-insure.
- 1:28[SPEAKER_02]: Go to progressive.com for more details.
- 1:32[SPEAKER_02]: All right, Marick.
- 1:33[SPEAKER_02]: How have you experienced?
- 1:34[SPEAKER_02]: And then I'll start with, and we are going to get into previewing
- 1:40[SPEAKER_02]: which I thought was going to be much more interesting than it's turning out to be because somehow in Cincinnati, they may miraculously cure concussions that should not kill normal people.
- 1:52[SPEAKER_02]: But, or would keep like dolphins up for like four or five weeks, or end careers.
- 1:58[SPEAKER_02]: But, you know, Jamar Chase is running around practice today, so that's bad news.
- 2:02[SPEAKER_02]: So we'll get into the second half and the first half we're just going to talk a little dolphins here.
- 2:07[SPEAKER_02]: How have you taken in these games so far?
- 2:12[SPEAKER_01]: I'll be honest, Alf, I've enjoyed this season quite a bit.
- 2:16[SPEAKER_01]: And actually, as much as you can enjoy an Owen 4 season, you know, to start off with it.
- 2:23[SPEAKER_01]: I guess it all just your perspective all depends on
- 2:27[SPEAKER_01]: What your expectations for this team was what going into the season, you know what I mean?
- 2:32[SPEAKER_01]: I didn't think this was going to be a good team, right?
- 2:36[SPEAKER_01]: I think at one point I predicted five victories.
- 2:38[SPEAKER_01]: I'm probably going to go under on that after watching them play for four games.
- 2:43[SPEAKER_01]: But I think
- 2:44[SPEAKER_01]: If you're looking for the right things, there have been some encouraging signs.
- 2:49[SPEAKER_01]: I really like the play of a lot of the rookies, Kate and Proctor has looked really good.
- 2:54[SPEAKER_01]: Chris Johnson over the last couple weeks has looked good after a rocky start.
- 2:59[SPEAKER_01]: Jacob Rodriguez looks like a star in the making.
- 3:04[SPEAKER_01]: Even guys like Michael Taff have had their moments, you know, so I think if you were
- 3:09[SPEAKER_01]: if you were expecting a competitive squad this year, then yeah, you're probably pretty disappointed in what you've seen so far.
- 3:17[SPEAKER_01]: But if you knew that this was more of a bad medicine year, you know, they're operating at 40% of the cap.
- 3:24[SPEAKER_01]: And if you were just looking for them to lay a solid foundation, like I was, then it hasn't been all too disappointing.
- 3:31[SPEAKER_01]: It's actually been encouraging.
- 3:33[SPEAKER_01]: at times and I think this last game against the Minnesota Vikings should leave you feeling even more encouraged heading into the rest of the season.
- 3:41[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, that's how I've taken in these games right like it's about progress and if they somehow get close to making a play or they're a play away from that play away to win the game.
- 3:53[SPEAKER_02]: Like against Kansas City, you can't get excited like there was a good swath there like almost three quarters worth a football against the Kansas City cheese for you looking at you like they're going to win this game.
- 4:07[SPEAKER_02]: Right.
- 4:07[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, do they have an opportunity here to win this game?
- 4:10[SPEAKER_02]: And then I guess when the soda was the same thing, right?
- 4:12[SPEAKER_02]: So, you know, I think Chris Kaufman said it best on I think it was a couple of podcasts to go.
- 4:18[SPEAKER_02]: I think it was yeah, it was a couple of podcasts to go because it was against the chiefs When he was talking about the team just it doesn't seem like they're ready to win a game yet
- 4:28[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, you know, but they've been through plenty through four weeks.
- 4:32[SPEAKER_02]: So I'm wondering if they're they might they might be getting closer, but yeah, that's how that's how I watch the games as well like we kind of know right like They don't have an opportunity in a lot of these games to win these games now.
- 4:47[SPEAKER_02]: And, and in all of four seasons, obviously we had to say something negative about this, but not, we would just be, you know, wasting your time.
- 4:55[SPEAKER_02]: Have you taken the Malik Wallace experience because if you go on Twitter, if you just listen to Twitter, but I don't think it's only Twitter.
- 5:04[SPEAKER_02]: because it's out there on like people that do sports radio and some people talk about it and the beat talks about it.
- 5:14[SPEAKER_02]: How have you taken in the Malik Willis experience yet because the way I take it is, man, he looks like a guy that has 10 starts under his belt.
- 5:24[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 5:25[SPEAKER_02]: And I'm gonna give him a little bit of grace and I don't understand how people on
- 5:31[SPEAKER_02]: social media are just essentially just throwing him away already after four games.
- 5:37[SPEAKER_01]: No, I think Malik has shown flashes of some really encouraging play that that almost touchdown to Chris Bell last week, being you know, top of the list, you know, toenail out of bounds and it took away a 68-yard score.
- 5:54[SPEAKER_01]: That play, regardless of whether Chris Bell was in bounds or not and he wasn't, that play was one of the most impressive plays you'll see anyone make all season, right?
- 6:07[SPEAKER_01]: That was a high level, you know, Patrick Mahomes, Josh Allen level, scramble, find a guy down field, get it to your open man and let him do the
- 6:19[SPEAKER_01]: the rest of the work, you know, unfortunately he was out of bounds, otherwise you're talking about a passerating over 100 in that game, you're talking about a highlight real play that's, you know, in sports center top 10, if they still do that, I don't want sports center anymore.
- 6:35[SPEAKER_01]: Okay, I think that would have made the top 10.
- 6:38[SPEAKER_01]: It was a phenomenal play.
- 6:40[SPEAKER_01]: But you know on the flip side he's had some some downside some some down moments as well.
- 6:46[SPEAKER_01]: But like you said, Alf he he's not a finished product yet and no he doesn't look as good as he did in spot starts for the Packers the last couple of years, but the Packers had
- 6:58[SPEAKER_01]: a great supporting cast and and a good offensive line and a good play caller and I think the the verdict still out or the jury still out on Bobby slow it is a play caller although I do think even he is showing progress over the last couple of weeks, but
- 7:16[SPEAKER_01]: This isn't a finished product, right?
- 7:18[SPEAKER_01]: And Malik Willis is not a finished product.
- 7:20[SPEAKER_01]: I don't think you've seen anything from Malik Willis to change your mind on who he is, based on your pre-season expectations.
- 7:30[SPEAKER_01]: If you thought, hey, he's gonna be the guy moving forward.
- 7:32[SPEAKER_01]: He's showing you enough that you can still have those beliefs.
- 7:35[SPEAKER_01]: But if you thought going into the season that, oh, you know, he's garbage, he's overpaid, he's not going to be the guy moving forward.
- 7:42[SPEAKER_01]: There's been enough, you know, downplays to reinforce that idea.
- 7:47[SPEAKER_01]: We're four weeks into the year, not a finished product, not a finished season.
- 7:51[SPEAKER_01]: We have a long way to go, and I'm willing to give him time to grow into this role.
- 7:57[SPEAKER_01]: But I do think there are some things that he could do a little bit better, maybe his decision making on when to scramble, when to tuck it and run, and when to throw the ball away, or when to try and find a guy down field, you know, I think that needs a little bit of work.
- 8:15[SPEAKER_01]: uh, swayed in a negative direction by Malik Willis's play so far.
- 8:20[SPEAKER_01]: I'm actually encouraged by the way he's been playing and I think he's getting a little better each and every game.
- 8:25[SPEAKER_01]: So I do expect him by the end of the season to have us feeling pretty solid about where he is as a quarterback and hopefully that allows the dolphins to, um, bypass any of these college quarterbacks that may be early first round selections in the upcoming draft
- 8:43[SPEAKER_01]: And all honesty, I haven't been impressed by too many college quarterbacks who could be available next April.
- 8:49[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, I completely agree on a pretty much every kind.
- 8:51[SPEAKER_02]: I think what people are, like I guess upset by is, they just finished coming off the tour talking about a little experience after six years.
- 9:01[SPEAKER_02]: To a never missed wide open people.
- 9:04[SPEAKER_02]: Like that was his thing.
- 9:05[SPEAKER_02]: Like he was extremely accurate.
- 9:07[SPEAKER_02]: And Willis has had a couple of misfires to what people can deem wide open on the broadcast.
- 9:16[SPEAKER_02]: you know, copy.
- 9:17[SPEAKER_02]: So people are watching the game and they're like, oh my god, he just missed that guy.
- 9:20[SPEAKER_02]: They're just not used to that the last six years.
- 9:24[SPEAKER_02]: You know, but it's a completely different make-up right now with with Malik Wallace.
- 9:29[SPEAKER_02]: He's a different type of player.
- 9:31[SPEAKER_01]: I saw something online the last couple days and I don't remember where I saw it, you know, so apologies to whoever put it out there, but I fully agreed with it, right?
- 9:43[SPEAKER_01]: If the Buffalo Bills would have treated Josh Allen the way some of the Dolphins fan base is treating Malik Willis, have to four games.
- 9:55[SPEAKER_01]: If Buffalo Bills fans would have been trying to
- 9:59[SPEAKER_01]: Josh Allen in the dumpster at any point during his first two seasons in the National Football League, then they wouldn't have gotten the Josh Allen that exists now, which is an upper echelon quarterback in the NFL.
- 10:13[SPEAKER_01]: And I think that's kind of where Malik Willis is right now, right?
- 10:15[SPEAKER_01]: He's shown you some flashes of that playmaking ability.
- 10:18[SPEAKER_01]: It's hard to find quarterbacks with his skill set, right?
- 10:21[SPEAKER_01]: His ability, his mobility, his ability to scramble, his arm strength, you know, he's got an incredibly strong arm.
- 10:29[SPEAKER_01]: And I think he just have to have some patience with the guy, you know, he's essentially a rookie.
- 10:36[SPEAKER_01]: I know he's been in the NFL for a few seasons now, but like you said, if he's only had 10 starts, that's not even a full season, that's barely over half a season.
- 10:45[SPEAKER_01]: So you gotta give him some time, you gotta have some patience and you have to look at what's surrounding him and kind of grade him on a curve.
- 10:53[SPEAKER_01]: And if you're grading him on a curve, then I'm encouraged with Malik Willis and I'm willing to wait the season out.
- 11:00[SPEAKER_01]: And honestly, I'm willing to give him another year and see what he does in year two with an improved
- 11:06[SPEAKER_01]: skill position group.
- 11:07[SPEAKER_01]: You get HM back healthy.
- 11:09[SPEAKER_01]: Maybe you get Jeremiah Smith early in the first round, which I think a lot of us are hoping for.
- 11:14[SPEAKER_01]: And you get Chris Bell and Caleb Douglas with a full years of experience under the belt.
- 11:20[SPEAKER_01]: I think that's going to look a lot better for Malik Willis in his second season as a starter for the dolphins if we get to that point.
- 11:28[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, and free agent dollars.
- 11:29[SPEAKER_02]: And we've talked about this.
- 11:31[SPEAKER_02]: We've talked about this on the pot.
- 11:32[SPEAKER_02]: And Simon is as half glass full of cyanide as you can get and always, always.
- 11:41[SPEAKER_02]: And he's like, this thing could turn around this off season.
- 11:46[SPEAKER_02]: And yeah, it's not crazy that these guys continue to develop the way that they are.
- 11:51[SPEAKER_02]: This is going to be a pretty damn good base to add to.
- 11:54[SPEAKER_02]: You add a hundred million dollars in cap space to this team.
- 11:57[SPEAKER_02]: You're gonna get some consequences starters on offense and defense They got a full draft class, and then you have further development like yeah, this team could be not that they're gonna win the division next year But this team could be right there knocking on the door for nine wins and making the playoffs next year That's not out of the realm of possibility, but you just have to weather this storm and just relax
- 12:22[SPEAKER_02]: enjoy the show okay and try to try to hope for progress and if you don't get it at the end of the 17 games then I guess you could step back and you could look at it and and you know then evaluate further then but as of right now there is no quarterback they you should be clamoring for it.
- 12:38[SPEAKER_02]: They just isn't.
- 12:40[SPEAKER_02]: The quarterback that's playing the best right now is Darren Mensa.
- 12:44[SPEAKER_02]: Okay, for the University of Miami, and even he has some words that people tend to find.
- 12:51[SPEAKER_02]: Okay, like he didn't play particularly well in the second half against Wake Forest when the team took some injuries.
- 12:57[SPEAKER_02]: And, you know, you tell people who he really is.
- 13:01[SPEAKER_02]: I know he had a 34-yard touchdown run against Clemson, but Daniel Mensa is in a try to explain it to people.
- 13:08[SPEAKER_02]: He's right-handed, healthy,
- 13:12[SPEAKER_01]: that that was that was kind of what I was going to you know bring up it he's not a he's not a big guy correct me if I'm wrong out but yeah he's he's tall he's six three okay all right
- 13:22[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, but he's like 205 pounds, 206 pounds, you know.
- 13:26[SPEAKER_02]: So he could be bigger.
- 13:27[SPEAKER_02]: He's not a small guy, you know?
- 13:29[SPEAKER_02]: His arm is slightly stronger than two of us, but his super power is his accuracy and anticipation, you know?
- 13:37[SPEAKER_02]: And everybody's out.
- 13:38[SPEAKER_01]: And we've been there before, like you just said, if we've been there with two of it, and unfortunately, you know, we see how that plays out in this league.
- 13:48[SPEAKER_01]: And the NFL has kind of evolved into a league
- 13:52[SPEAKER_01]: are just super athlete, super human athletes, you know, we're not in the era of statues in the pocket anymore.
- 14:01[SPEAKER_01]: You've got to be able to move, you've got to be able to create plays with your legs, and if you can't do that, then the link's going to kind of pass you by a little bit.
- 14:11[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, and, and if you watch the quarterback play nowadays, it is lacking, like it's not what it used to be.
- 14:16[SPEAKER_02]: And I understand that Matthew Stafford won the MVP last year, being a statue, but look at his supporting cast.
- 14:22[SPEAKER_02]: Okay, and his play collar.
- 14:24[SPEAKER_02]: And he's always been a great player.
- 14:26[SPEAKER_02]: You know, but other than him, yeah, you're right, it's Patrick Mahomes making plays with his legs and Josh Allen, Lamar Jackson, it's even deck press got moves plenty, you know, and I think he's been, you know, MVP level, the only other guy you could argue for, but if you watch him play, he's really, really athletic and that's Brock Perti.
- 14:47[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, because as a right now, I have a block party and yeah, I have block party and that press got as my MVP candidates.
- 14:55[SPEAKER_02]: So, but both are really, really athletic.
- 14:57[SPEAKER_02]: So, yeah, maybe that 34 year 34 year touchdown run by, by men's, you know, we'll change some minds in that regard.
- 15:05[SPEAKER_02]: But yeah, none of these quarterbacks are without words.
- 15:09[SPEAKER_02]: Okay, so there's nothing to clamor for and like I've said before if you just take a quarterback for the sake of taking a quarterback in the first round.
- 15:16[SPEAKER_02]: That's how you end up with Ryan 10.
- 15:19[SPEAKER_01]: Yep, and I don't think we want to repeat that.
- 15:21[SPEAKER_02]: You have to have conviction when you're going to go take your quarterback.
- 15:26[SPEAKER_02]: Well, all right.
- 15:27[SPEAKER_02]: We're going to go to break and when we come back, we will talk Bengals dolphins.
- 15:30[SPEAKER_02]: But first, these words.
- 15:33[SPEAKER_02]: Our back.
- 15:35[SPEAKER_02]: All right.
- 15:37[SPEAKER_02]: I did this show on Monday with Chris and we were talking about pankles, you know, to more chase almost died on the field.
- 15:45[SPEAKER_02]: Teagans, his neck, everything's hurting on Teagans, and we're like, we're going to have Joe Burrow coming in here with no wide receivers.
- 15:57[SPEAKER_02]: There I say, I feel good about winning this game.
- 16:00[SPEAKER_02]: Well, it seems like to more chase practice today, so we don't know about that yet.
- 16:05[SPEAKER_02]: But your initial thoughts on this because if they're missing those two wide receivers and I haven't seen the the the the injury report yet
- 16:14[SPEAKER_02]: But today's the tell tell one, it's the Thursday injury report.
- 16:18[SPEAKER_02]: Usually, whatever you see on that injury report is what's going to happen.
- 16:21[SPEAKER_02]: So I'm interested to see if they get DNPs, although the rumor is that tomorrow Chase was actually a participant.
- 16:27[SPEAKER_01]: Yep, I did take a look at that before we before we hit record and tomorrow Chase was limited today.
- 16:33[SPEAKER_01]: T-higgins was the DNP, so it does look like there is a chance that that Chase plays.
- 16:39[SPEAKER_01]: right you know he's he's progressing through the protocol usually that's good that bodes well for his availability on sunday uh you know bodes well if you're a bengals fan not if you're a dolphins fan we were kind of hoping to catch him without that but it does look like uh tomorrow chase has a good shot to play on sunday and
- 16:58[SPEAKER_01]: if that's the case then you know it's going to be another tough afternoon for the Miami Dolphins.
- 17:04[SPEAKER_01]: Joe Burrow is an upper echelon quarterback in the national football league.
- 17:09[SPEAKER_01]: I think the Bengals defense is is much improved.
- 17:14[SPEAKER_01]: There's a lot of extra Lawrence.
- 17:15[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 17:15[SPEAKER_01]: Dexter Lawrence addition has been a big boom for them.
- 17:18[SPEAKER_01]: So
- 17:22[SPEAKER_01]: You'd love to sit here and say, well, home field advantage and I don't know what the weather's supposed to be like on Sunday, but you know, it's always warm in Miami compared to the rest of the United States.
- 17:33[SPEAKER_01]: So you'd like to think that could be a little bit in your favor.
- 17:35[SPEAKER_01]: I think it helped them a little bit against Kansas City, but
- 17:41[SPEAKER_01]: it's the 2026 Miami Dolphins.
- 17:44[SPEAKER_01]: I don't know if you're going to be able to walk into any game feeling confident that this is the week they get it done.
- 17:52[SPEAKER_01]: And if Jamar Chase ends up shooting up for Cincinnati on Sunday, I don't think I can predict a victory for our boys in Auckland Orange, unfortunately.
- 18:03[SPEAKER_02]: Now, what would you want to see in this game?
- 18:05[SPEAKER_02]: Because I know what I would want to see.
- 18:07[SPEAKER_02]: And I'll tell you, I want this team to get right back to its identity.
- 18:12[SPEAKER_02]: I understand that they just didn't have enough snaps last week against the Vikings.
- 18:17[SPEAKER_02]: And a lot of that is because they didn't sustain drives.
- 18:21[SPEAKER_02]: But also, it's because the defense did allow some extended drives.
- 18:25[SPEAKER_02]: And then there were a buttoning up and tightening up and midfield.
- 18:29[SPEAKER_02]: I'm wondering if,
- 18:32[SPEAKER_02]: they could change that up a little bit this week and become a defense that could start getting some three announced and then extending drives once again because this offense has an operating at a high level yet really.
- 18:47[SPEAKER_02]: But when it has been functional, it was against the 40 Niners, short periods against the Chiefs, short periods against the Raiders, no periods really against the Vikings, except for a couple of explosives, because they only mounted their points against the Vikings through explosives.
- 19:06[SPEAKER_02]: And I don't think that that's a way you want to live, right?
- 19:09[SPEAKER_02]: But I'm wondering if they could get back to some of that extending drives trying to get off the field quickly and get back on the time of possession because if there's one thing that made me feel warm and fuzzy was when when Jeff halfway was asked about time of possession and he said that a lot of people don't care about that, but he does.
- 19:30[SPEAKER_02]: It's a stat that he actually deeply cares about and I heard that I'm like absolutely like that's exactly The way there's team should be designed to play especially down here in Miami and in this weather So that's what I want to see.
- 19:45[SPEAKER_02]: I want to see a team that's going to get back to its Identity the other thing I would want to see is the Bengals aren't notorious.
- 19:54[SPEAKER_02]: We're right there with them by the way
- 20:01[SPEAKER_02]: Yes, so let's get dosage involved like he's been invisible in the passing game through four games So let's try to get him involved a bit more and let's start there and
- 20:17[SPEAKER_02]: Last thing I would want to see is a special team's unit that is just not actively going to be sabotaging the team from the beginning of the game like this last game.
- 20:26[SPEAKER_02]: So I think what do you want to see?
- 20:28[SPEAKER_02]: What do you want to see in this game?
- 20:29[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, I'm right there with you, you know, in the preseason there was a lot of talk about Dolcech possibly being the target leader on this team and that just
- 20:39[SPEAKER_01]: has not come to pass through the first four games.
- 20:41[SPEAKER_01]: So I'd like to see him getting a little more involved.
- 20:44[SPEAKER_01]: And like you said, sticking with the tight end, we got our old friend Mike Sikky coming to town.
- 20:49[SPEAKER_01]: And he's had himself a pretty good start to the season for the bank.
- 20:53[SPEAKER_01]: So Hawkinson, TJ Hawkinson, for the Vikings last week, he tore the dolphins up 13 targets, 13 receptions, over 100 yards.
- 21:02[SPEAKER_01]: What ahead of touchdown if he didn't slide down the two yard line
- 21:08[SPEAKER_01]: the end of the game there.
- 21:09[SPEAKER_01]: I would really like to see our defense finally for the first time in what feels like a decade, a decade and a half, finally figure out how to cover a tight end, and, you know, hopefully they can shut down and get sicky.
- 21:23[SPEAKER_01]: And I think that would go a long way towards this defense playing a good game.
- 21:28[SPEAKER_01]: If Chase is back,
- 21:29[SPEAKER_01]: that's a tough assignment for anyone.
- 21:31[SPEAKER_01]: I don't care who you are, you know, Chris Johnson plays outside on early downs, comes inside when the dolphins are in nickel on third downs.
- 21:41[SPEAKER_01]: So he would be able to be mashed up against Chase Plenty in this game.
- 21:46[SPEAKER_01]: So
- 21:48[SPEAKER_01]: It's a good test for the rookie.
- 21:50[SPEAKER_01]: I just kind of want to see how he handles an opportunity like that, but as far as the passing game goes, you got to look at the city and you got to ask these these linebackers to step it up a little bit in that regard.
- 22:04[SPEAKER_01]: I think Kenneth Grant possibly coming back could be a big boon for this defense as well, right?
- 22:10[SPEAKER_01]: I think Chase Brown is a solid NFL running back.
- 22:14[SPEAKER_01]: The bangles really do like to run it inside with Chase Brown, which is
- 22:20[SPEAKER_01]: at his size, you think maybe he'd be more of an outside zone type guy, but they really do stick to that inside zone run.
- 22:27[SPEAKER_01]: So if you get a big body, like Kenneth Grant back in there, hopefully he can help in that avenue.
- 22:33[SPEAKER_01]: But as far as one of the dolphins have the ball, I'd really like to see them unleash Malik Willis's athleticism.
- 22:40[SPEAKER_01]: It feels like in a way he's he's kind of had handcuffs on
- 22:47[SPEAKER_01]: That's the coaching, I don't think that's a coaching decision.
- 22:50[SPEAKER_01]: I think that's a Malik Willis decision.
- 22:52[SPEAKER_01]: And I'd like to kind of know what his thought process is there.
- 22:56[SPEAKER_01]: You know, why aren't you using your mobility and your athleticism a little bit more?
- 23:01[SPEAKER_01]: Because I think opportunities have been there and he just hasn't pulled the trigger on those.
- 23:06[SPEAKER_01]: You know what I mean?
- 23:06[SPEAKER_01]: So I'd really like to see him say screw it, let's go ball through the wall here.
- 23:12[SPEAKER_01]: And if a running lane is available, I'd like to see him take it.
- 23:18[SPEAKER_01]: Because I do think with his level of athleticism, what he is capable of, if you can add that to his game, I really do think it unlocks a lot for this Dolphins offense.
- 23:29[SPEAKER_01]: And I think it will unlock throwing lanes.
- 23:34[SPEAKER_01]: In the passing game as well, if he is willing to tuck the ball and run and opposing defenses know that, I think maybe it leaves, it gives these receivers a little bit more room to work in the secondary as the season progresses.
- 23:46[SPEAKER_01]: So I would like to see him kind of unleash that mobility a little bit more.
- 23:52[SPEAKER_02]: Now, offensively before we move on to defense very quickly here and then we'll give you our picks.
- 23:58[SPEAKER_02]: Offensively, Ali Gordon had a hundred yards on nine characters.
- 24:01[SPEAKER_02]: He played very
- 24:04[SPEAKER_02]: Do you still want to see him as now last week?
- 24:07[SPEAKER_02]: It was kind of by force because first of all, they didn't have that many snaps and Jailon Wright was coming off of injury, but would you like to see Ali Gordon be back in that bell cow role or would you like to see more of a time share with him and Jailon Wright this weekend?
- 24:25[SPEAKER_01]: on that injury report.
- 24:26[SPEAKER_01]: Like I said, Jaylam Wright actually popped up with a little bit of a foot injury today.
- 24:31[SPEAKER_01]: He was limited in practice after being a full go yesterday.
- 24:34[SPEAKER_01]: So that's something we're gonna have to monitor through the end of this week.
- 24:38[SPEAKER_01]: I'm gonna be honest with you, Alf.
- 24:41[SPEAKER_01]: I have not been a big fan of Ali Gordon's game outside of a couple early games last year is Ricky here.
- 24:48[SPEAKER_01]: I do think or I did think that Jalen Wright was going to be more of running back one A after HN went out and that's not what happened last week and I was impressed with Ali Gordon's game against the Vikings.
- 25:04[SPEAKER_01]: He looked good.
- 25:05[SPEAKER_01]: He looked good.
- 25:06[SPEAKER_01]: His decision making was good.
- 25:11[SPEAKER_01]: And I guess if I'm slow, I'm leaning into that, especially if Jalen Wright is hampered with a little bit of a foot ailment.
- 25:18[SPEAKER_01]: So I would lean into that.
- 25:20[SPEAKER_01]: I would make all he Gordon the bell cow until he shows you that he's not capable of handling that role.
- 25:26[SPEAKER_01]: But last week against Minnesota, he looked pretty darn good.
- 25:29[SPEAKER_01]: So I kind of want to explore that a little bit more and see where he's at it if you continue to force feed him the rock.
- 25:41[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, yeah, I'm intrigued by what Gordon showed against Minnesota last week.
- 25:46[SPEAKER_02]: Now, as far as moving on to the defense, we know you're going to defeat Joe Poro, you're going to have to get pressure, but let's talk about a unit that nobody's really talking about, because they're actually playing really well.
- 26:00[SPEAKER_02]: And I said that they really weren't going to get tested too much to start the season.
- 26:10[SPEAKER_02]: But the Vikings, they have a lot of talent.
- 26:13[SPEAKER_02]: Jordan Addison, Joanne Jennings, they're a lot of talent, but the quarterback just doesn't get it to them very well.
- 26:21[SPEAKER_02]: The Chiefs had a lot of talent out there on the outside, and I thought my aim would play really well on the outside with Jason Marshall, Jr. and JJ Branson.
- 26:30[SPEAKER_02]: this is a game that's going to test them.
- 26:32[SPEAKER_02]: So that's something I definitely want to see.
- 26:35[SPEAKER_02]: And I want to see how they hold up against a quarterback and a connection like Jamar Chase in this game.
- 26:42[SPEAKER_02]: So that's one issue.
- 26:44[SPEAKER_02]: I'm absolutely intent on seeing.
- 26:47[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, and it's a big opportunity, right?
- 26:50[SPEAKER_01]: If they can show if they can show
- 26:55[SPEAKER_01]: Not, I'm not even asking them to dominate this game, right?
- 26:58[SPEAKER_01]: Just hold your own against Joe Burrow, Jamar Che, so Mike Cickey, like, that will go a long way towards instilling confidence in this defense moving forward and instilling confidence in Jeff Hathley and his scheme moving forward.
- 27:16[SPEAKER_01]: If they can show, if they can hold their own and show some competence against, I mean, let's face it.
- 27:22[SPEAKER_01]: These guys are superstars, right?
- 27:24[SPEAKER_01]: They've been to a Super Bowl.
- 27:25[SPEAKER_01]: Didn't win it, but they they made it there, right?
- 27:29[SPEAKER_01]: That can, can, and even if they don't win the game, right?
- 27:32[SPEAKER_01]: Like, like, again, this season is not measured by wins and losses.
- 27:37[SPEAKER_01]: But if they can hold their own against
- 27:44[SPEAKER_01]: really good about this defense moving forward.
- 27:48[SPEAKER_01]: And again, as we talked about heading into next season when you can add some pieces on both sides of the ball, you're gonna feel really good about the direction of this squad.
- 27:58[SPEAKER_01]: So I'm very intrigued and interested to see how this one plays out and see if Chris Johnson can continue to develop and brands can continue to develop.
- 28:09[SPEAKER_01]: And man, if Brent stays healthy through the rest of the season, you're looking at an extension there and maybe a little bit more expensive of an extension than you thought heading into this year, but I like his size.
- 28:22[SPEAKER_01]: And I was always kind of a big fan of his game coming out of Kansas State.
- 28:26[SPEAKER_01]: So hopefully he can stay healthy.
- 28:28[SPEAKER_01]: This kind of in the knock on him throughout his career thus far.
- 28:31[SPEAKER_01]: But they don't just might have something cooking with this young second area.
- 28:36[SPEAKER_01]: I'm definitely intrigued with where they're at.
- 28:39[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, usually it never works out when people are like, oh my god, this is the worst second during the history of football.
- 28:44[SPEAKER_02]: Well, you just saying that because you haven't seen them play yet.
- 28:47[SPEAKER_02]: Exactly.
- 28:49[SPEAKER_02]: But you never know.
- 28:50[SPEAKER_02]: You never know if these guys are actually gonna blossom before our very eyes.
- 28:55[SPEAKER_02]: Like we had that same thing happen on our discord.
- 28:58[SPEAKER_02]: And as you can see, you could join right there under my name.
- 29:01[SPEAKER_02]: And if not, I put the link in the description of this podcast, but it's discord.gg4ds-onlyfins.
- 29:08[SPEAKER_02]: You could join there all access for 499 a month join in the desktop.
- 29:12[SPEAKER_02]: We want to do read only it's $299 But somebody was talking about oh storm duck is coming back so if storm duck comes back He just replaces Jason Marshall Jr. And I'm like are you insane?
- 29:22[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, no, no, Jason Marshall Jr. is get used to a world where Jason Marshall Jr. is actually a good player and then the fell player and is at the very least very good depth going forward beginning next season.
- 29:44[SPEAKER_02]: his issue is just he's always injured and if it was injured that's a rough spot to put a team in where they pay you $14,15 million a year and then you're not available for a half the season.
- 29:55[SPEAKER_02]: Right?
- 29:56[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 29:57[SPEAKER_01]: And it really does feel like these guys, despite being on for it feels like they understand themselves what this season is about and they're playing really, really hard for Jeff Hathley.
- 30:10[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, you tell me how has there ever been a season with zero expectations where the team starts on for where you felt this good about the future of the franchise?
- 30:21[SPEAKER_02]: No, I don't remember.
- 30:23[SPEAKER_02]: I don't.
- 30:23[SPEAKER_02]: It's confusing.
- 30:24[SPEAKER_02]: Like, like, I'm waking up on Sundays and thinking to myself, are we going to win?
- 30:28[SPEAKER_02]: Nope.
- 30:29[SPEAKER_02]: But am I going to enjoy this game?
- 30:32[SPEAKER_02]: Yes.
- 30:33[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.
- 30:38[SPEAKER_02]: could be a week coming up where they just get absolutely smoked and we're sitting back and we're like oh my god maybe we're not good going forward you know but anyways let's pick the game man I was about to be ready I was I was this close I was gonna pick them the win but I was gonna pick them to lose like maybe in spectacular fashion maybe a 60 yard
- 31:06[SPEAKER_02]: or our last minute drive, but with Jamar Chase, like if that offense is going to be constituted, anything like what it was when it was healthy, I think that's bad news because I don't know if our offense is ready, especially without killed Douglass, to actually score enough to beat somebody like the Bengals.
- 31:29[SPEAKER_02]: It's not that we match up poorly against them,
- 31:35[SPEAKER_02]: their offense can score and ours is not only a little short-handed, but basically not good enough right now, right?
- 31:45[SPEAKER_02]: But I think our defense takes yet another step and they play tight.
- 31:48[SPEAKER_02]: They please guys tough.
- 31:50[SPEAKER_02]: So I'm going to take Bengals 23,
- 31:54[SPEAKER_02]: Dolphins 13.
- 31:56[SPEAKER_02]: So that's 10.
- 31:58[SPEAKER_02]: We're creeping.
- 31:59[SPEAKER_02]: We're creeping toward toward better days.
- 32:02[SPEAKER_02]: Then we'll get a bi-week and then we'll buy the jets and we'll talk then.
- 32:06[SPEAKER_02]: But that's my pick.
- 32:07[SPEAKER_02]: It's Bengals 23.
- 32:09[SPEAKER_02]: Dolphins 13.
- 32:11[SPEAKER_02]: Your thoughts, Merit.
- 32:13[SPEAKER_01]: You know, we're kind of on the same wavelength here.
- 32:16[SPEAKER_01]: I do feel like this is going to mirror that Kansas City Chiefs game a lot.
- 32:20[SPEAKER_01]: I think we're going to keep it close.
- 32:22[SPEAKER_01]: I think there's going to be times throughout the game where you're going, hey, we might be able to pull this off, but I do think, you know, with Burro with Chase with Chase Brown even.
- 32:32[SPEAKER_01]: I think they have too much firepower on offense for us to keep up and I do think.
- 32:39[SPEAKER_01]: I do think the dolphins will keep it close right until the very end and I'm predicting a Bengals 24 to 13 victory.
- 32:48[SPEAKER_01]: So we're just one point off there.
- 32:50[SPEAKER_02]: Wow, you priced for you prices right at me.
- 32:52[SPEAKER_01]: I think I did.
- 32:53[SPEAKER_01]: I think I did.
- 32:54[SPEAKER_02]: All right.
- 32:55[SPEAKER_02]: Oh, that's it.
- 32:56[SPEAKER_02]: There is no more.
- 32:57[SPEAKER_02]: A Monday we will have results for this game.
- 32:59[SPEAKER_02]: It's been a good week content here.
- 33:01[SPEAKER_02]: You guys have been tuning in.
- 33:03[SPEAKER_02]: We thank you for that.
- 33:05[SPEAKER_02]: On Monday, it's going to be pretty interesting because
- 33:10[SPEAKER_02]: on Monday, we're headed to a by week and we're going to do like a pretty good evaluation of the first five games.
- 33:18[SPEAKER_02]: But we thank all our sponsors, especially Thompson Sagar, who has returned with us for the duration of the regular season.
- 33:26[SPEAKER_02]: or the playoffs, but when you read a contract and it says, oh, we'll be with you through the playoffs, or as long as the dolphins are alive, and you're reading then you're like, oh, so January, like the first week of January is when you guys drop enough then, okay.
- 33:43[SPEAKER_02]: Well, thank you.
- 33:44[SPEAKER_02]: But thank you for flattering us Thompson cigar.
- 33:47[SPEAKER_02]: But yeah, we do thank you.
