- 0:04Speaker 1: Smell off.
- 0:04Speaker 2: Now, lady, Welcome to Meet Eater Trivia podcast. Welcome to
- 0:27Speaker 2: Meet Eater Radio Live. It's eleven am Mountain Time, that's
- 0:30Speaker 2: one pm for our friends in Machias, Maine, on Thursday,
- 0:35Speaker 2: December eleven, and we're live for Meet Eater, HQ and Bozeman.
- 0:38Speaker 2: I'm your host, Spencer, joined today by Seth Randall was
- 0:41Speaker 2: supposed to be here, but for some reason he had
- 0:43Speaker 2: to bail. It was a good reason. Now on today's show,
- 0:47Speaker 2: we'll interview Kurt Steiner, the man who holds the world
- 0:50Speaker 2: record for skipping a rock eighty eight times, and we'll
- 0:54Speaker 2: have gear Talk, where Seth and I review hunting and
- 0:56Speaker 2: fishing products. But first, Seth, I just the biggest white
- 1:00Speaker 2: tail in my life.
- 1:01Speaker 1: Oh I know, I know it. I when I got that.
- 1:06Speaker 3: I love when my friends send me deer pictures, but
- 1:09Speaker 3: your yours, your picture was the best one I got
- 1:11Speaker 3: all year old. I was just like overrun with with joy.
- 1:15Speaker 3: Good when you send me that.
- 1:16Speaker 2: I'm tickled. I'm tickled.
- 1:17Speaker 4: He also like the biggest white tailed deer of most
- 1:21Speaker 4: people's lifetimes, not just yours.
- 1:24Speaker 1: Like that's a really big deer.
- 1:25Speaker 2: Uh huh yeah, yeah. For some reason, we have Ryan
- 1:28Speaker 2: Callahan brogaining. Max Barton also in the room.
- 1:33Speaker 1: You introduced us at the beginning.
- 1:35Speaker 2: He didn't.
- 1:37Speaker 5: He actually specifically said we will not be acknowledging you
- 1:41Speaker 5: Christmas everybody.
- 1:43Speaker 2: Uh, I was in the Golden Triangle of Illinois. That's
- 1:48Speaker 2: Pike County, Adams County, Brown County. Those counties are second, third,
- 1:51Speaker 2: and tenth in Illinois for boone and crocket whitetail entries U.
- 1:55Speaker 2: And it's just like if you got to play Sims
- 1:58Speaker 2: or play God with with the earth and be like,
- 2:00Speaker 2: I'm gonna make the best white tail ground I can fathom. Yep,
- 2:03Speaker 2: that's what you would get in the Golden Triangle. It's
- 2:05Speaker 2: just like the perfect mix of timber and egg. And
- 2:09Speaker 2: since the invention of Outdoor Magazine Outdoor TV, the Golden
- 2:12Speaker 2: Triangle has been a place on a map that the
- 2:14Speaker 2: whitetail hunters fantasized about. Oh yeah, I'd put it with
- 2:17Speaker 2: like you know, like Buffalo County, Illinois, the Milk River
- 2:20Speaker 2: in Montana, yep, South Texas, South Iowa, the bread Basket
- 2:23Speaker 2: of Saskatchewan. You know, it's just like notorious is all
- 2:27Speaker 2: those places for like big giant white tail bucks.
- 2:31Speaker 3: Yeah, it's like it's like what Nashville is for country
- 2:33Speaker 3: music exactly.
- 2:34Speaker 6: Yeah, that's a good analogy.
- 2:36Speaker 2: So my buddy invited me out to hunt his farm
- 2:38Speaker 2: this year. It was like the most excited I've been
- 2:42Speaker 2: about a hunt in twenty twenty five. And going into
- 2:45Speaker 2: the hunt, I had told my buddy this, I was like,
- 2:47Speaker 2: my anticipation is so high that there's no possible way
- 2:51Speaker 2: it can meet my expectations. Yeah, like I'm just I'm
- 2:53Speaker 2: expecting too much at this point. And then the biggest
- 2:57Speaker 2: buck on the farm showed up.
- 2:59Speaker 3: So did you did you go into this did you
- 3:01Speaker 3: know did you have like trail cam pictures of the
- 3:04Speaker 3: deer that you could potentially be seen there.
- 3:06Speaker 2: Yeah, my landowner buddy was aware of like four or
- 3:10Speaker 2: five bucks they thought that were like five plus years old. Uh,
- 3:14Speaker 2: this this was the biggest buck of them all. They
- 3:16Speaker 2: had three years of history with him, when he was
- 3:18Speaker 2: a three year old, a four year old, and this
- 3:19Speaker 2: year five year old. They had seen him during archery
- 3:22Speaker 2: season in October, never gave him a shot, and then
- 3:26Speaker 2: he disappeared at the end of October. They didn't see
- 3:28Speaker 2: him again. They didn't get any trailcam photos of him. Right,
- 3:33Speaker 2: So this landowner was hunting this deer he was hunting. Yes,
- 3:35Speaker 2: they tried to kill him. Didn't happen this year, but
- 3:38Speaker 2: then December old around and they got like eight inches
- 3:41Speaker 2: of snow spencer.
- 3:44Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 3:48Speaker 2: Up on the TV, right, we have a picture of him.
- 3:51Speaker 1: It's beautiful.
- 3:52Speaker 2: He's a mainframe five by five, but he's got a
- 3:55Speaker 2: lot of junk. I think he has nineteen scorable points.
- 3:58Speaker 2: A lot of it is around his bases that are
- 4:01Speaker 2: hard to appreciate.
- 4:02Speaker 1: You just think you're kind of guessing he's got nineteen.
- 4:04Speaker 1: He didn't look at him that hard.
- 4:05Speaker 2: Well, he's got stuff going on around his bases that
- 4:09Speaker 2: are like crawling across into his hide, and some of
- 4:13Speaker 2: it's going to be close to that inch. I haven't
- 4:14Speaker 2: put a tape measure on him yet, but I think
- 4:17Speaker 2: it'll come out to nineteen points. And if you look,
- 4:20Speaker 2: I've got sheds here of the buck he's got like
- 4:23Speaker 2: they're not really dirty sheds, but it's called a dirty
- 4:25Speaker 2: shed when they break off some of their pedical with it,
- 4:28Speaker 2: and typically that means they're gonna throw a funky rack
- 4:30Speaker 2: when you have a dirty shed. In this book, he
- 4:32Speaker 2: has a few dirty sheds. His three year old sheds
- 4:35Speaker 2: were dirty, His four year old sheds were kind of dirty,
- 4:38Speaker 2: and so then you know you're going to get some
- 4:40Speaker 2: abnormal points. So you're talking about those little Bumpser at
- 4:44Speaker 2: the white stuff on the bottom. Yeah, that's like part
- 4:47Speaker 2: of his skull that's coming with, which is an ideal
- 4:49Speaker 2: for a deer they want to make a nice clean
- 4:52Speaker 2: breakof seems pretty ideal for him. Ideal for him. Yeah,
- 4:56Speaker 2: it was working out. So he was a mainframe five
- 4:59Speaker 2: by five, uh, nineteen points. Very exciting.
- 5:03Speaker 5: This landowner that that you got this little connection with.
- 5:07Speaker 1: Is this just a great guy.
- 5:10Speaker 2: It's a jaw tag. But it's like, you know, the
- 5:12Speaker 2: Golden Triangle is mostly private land and so it's not
- 5:16Speaker 2: that competitive for a non resident god to be able
- 5:19Speaker 2: to go there and hunt. Yeah, the buck disappeared for
- 5:23Speaker 2: five weeks, showed back up. They had like eight inches
- 5:25Speaker 2: of snow the week before I got there, and they
- 5:27Speaker 2: were saying, it's been a very long time since the
- 5:29Speaker 2: second gun season, which was what I was there for,
- 5:32Speaker 2: had that much snow on the ground. So it just
- 5:33Speaker 2: worked out perfect where it made you show up in
- 5:36Speaker 2: some places real heavy and disappear from others, and it
- 5:39Speaker 2: just happened that they had the right soybeans to pull
- 5:42Speaker 2: in the box.
- 5:42Speaker 5: That's fantastic one perfect crazy there.
- 5:46Speaker 7: Well, what's this that?
- 5:49Speaker 2: Here's something?
- 5:51Speaker 1: You look giddy?
- 5:54Speaker 2: Something foot in the Meat Eater studio.
- 5:57Speaker 1: I feel like just shadowed St.
- 6:03Speaker 2: Clause Sannah.
- 6:06Speaker 7: I wasn't rudy for that.
- 6:07Speaker 2: She was not ready. Indeed, ladies and gentlemen, Santa Claus
- 6:13Speaker 2: has just stepped into the Meat Eater podcast studio.
- 6:16Speaker 1: He's got a big sack full.
- 6:17Speaker 7: Of gifts a little boys and girls.
- 6:24Speaker 1: How are you doing?
- 6:25Speaker 7: I'm doing very well, Thank you very much.
- 6:28Speaker 1: Where you park the reindeer?
- 6:30Speaker 7: Old? They're outside?
- 6:31Speaker 6: No they're not.
- 6:36Speaker 7: Don't don't be a grinch there, Brody, I'm just telling truth. Buddy,
- 6:40Speaker 7: you're full of humbug.
- 6:42Speaker 2: That is observed that you have a giant bag with you.
- 6:45Speaker 7: I do, I do, I cannot swing by my favorite
- 6:49Speaker 7: Thursday live podcast airs at eleven Mountain time. Just spread
- 6:53Speaker 7: a little Christmas cheer.
- 6:55Speaker 2: Perfect okay, And and now it also appears that Cal
- 7:00Speaker 2: Brody and Max have showed up.
- 7:05Speaker 7: Magic nice.
- 7:07Speaker 1: You sound like Daniel d Lewis from There Will be Blood.
- 7:11Speaker 1: Give me the.
- 7:11Speaker 7: Bloody a false profet Seth. Someone told me whose gift
- 7:18Speaker 7: this was, and I've forgotten it already.
- 7:21Speaker 2: Okay, does this go?
- 7:24Speaker 1: That's for Bill the engineer.
- 7:25Speaker 2: Bill the engineers.
- 7:33Speaker 6: Have to.
- 7:36Speaker 7: There's a series of gifts for Seth Morris that are
- 7:40Speaker 7: numbered in this way.
- 7:43Speaker 2: Number one, you're supposed, my goodness.
- 7:48Speaker 7: Okay, this is for Spencer Newhart.
- 7:51Speaker 2: Okay, seen that? What is it?
- 7:55Speaker 3: Good?
- 7:56Speaker 2: It's good and cold?
- 7:57Speaker 7: Maxwell. I shouldn't have.
- 8:03Speaker 1: What else?
- 8:04Speaker 7: Ryan Callahan, n.
- 8:07Speaker 2: Oh, looks like a man wrapped that present.
- 8:10Speaker 1: Brody doesn't have anything.
- 8:12Speaker 7: No to Brody Anderson.
- 8:15Speaker 2: All right, same wrapping paper as cows.
- 8:19Speaker 7: This is a topper where that the Williams household borrowed
- 8:23Speaker 7: from you.
- 8:25Speaker 4: Okay, it may have been very specific that I wanted
- 8:29Speaker 4: it back.
- 8:29Speaker 7: Randy's not here, but I'll open that perfect gifts?
- 8:36Speaker 2: Is that everything? Okay? I think?
- 8:37Speaker 7: So? Oh wait, he's done. I also have a lot
- 8:41Speaker 7: of candy canes and bottles of fireball.
- 8:47Speaker 2: Ten baby bottles of fireball whiskey have just been jumped
- 8:50Speaker 2: out of You need more?
- 8:51Speaker 7: I have more. There's a lot of it at my house,
- 8:53Speaker 7: and I don't like it.
- 8:55Speaker 3: I can't believe that that Fireball keeps saying a deeper host.
- 9:01Speaker 1: I want to gage you. Now.
- 9:02Speaker 2: What doesn't Santa like about Fireball? That's kind of an upset.
- 9:05Speaker 2: I assume that'd be right in his wheelhouse. It's too sweet,
- 9:08Speaker 2: too sweet.
- 9:09Speaker 7: I drink it too fast.
- 9:11Speaker 2: You need to go ice fishing, well, Santa.
- 9:14Speaker 5: Last year Santa went one minute fishing on our show.
- 9:17Speaker 5: I don't think he was successful.
- 9:19Speaker 7: We have great fishing weather today we do. It's nearly
- 9:22Speaker 7: sixty degrees.
- 9:25Speaker 1: Ice fishing weather.
- 9:26Speaker 2: No, no, sorry, Okay, Santa has handed out the gifts.
- 9:30Speaker 2: Let's start over with fill the engineer, Phil.
- 9:32Speaker 1: It's open up.
- 9:32Speaker 5: Sure, it looks like the internet at Meat Eater h
- 9:35Speaker 5: Q dropped up for a secure But I think Sanna
- 9:40Speaker 5: Santa were lying.
- 9:43Speaker 1: Cha.
- 9:44Speaker 5: Let us know, let us know if the if the
- 9:46Speaker 5: stream's back, I believe it is.
- 9:47Speaker 7: Yeah, it looks good.
- 9:48Speaker 5: Okay, I'm opening my gift now. It's on the floor
- 9:51Speaker 5: since it's a little bit large to doing my lap.
- 9:58Speaker 2: People are asking if you've been drinking already.
- 10:00Speaker 7: No, not yet, not yet.
- 10:04Speaker 2: It's the middle of the day.
- 10:06Speaker 1: Dry commute back to Phil.
- 10:10Speaker 5: You're supposed to read that whole card, the whole card.
- 10:14Speaker 5: You want me to read it live on air here, Yes, okay,
- 10:17Speaker 5: we go. It says, because you mean so much at
- 10:21Speaker 5: Christmas and.
- 10:22Speaker 2: Always it's kind of romantic.
- 10:26Speaker 5: I'm feeling things. The holiday season isn't really about gifts
- 10:30Speaker 5: and decorations. It's about reaching out to the people who
- 10:33Speaker 5: mean the most to us and letting them know how
- 10:35Speaker 5: much we care. So remove wrap before placing an envelope
- 10:42Speaker 5: the car on the car and whoever gave you this gift.
- 10:47Speaker 4: I mean they were kind enough not to write in
- 10:50Speaker 4: the card, so you can read gift.
- 10:51Speaker 5: That very conscious, thoughtful.
- 10:57Speaker 2: There's a guy who cares about the environment.
- 10:59Speaker 5: You're such a special person and you're you're wished every
- 11:02Speaker 5: little happiness long after the holidays are over. Merry Christmas. Wow,
- 11:06Speaker 5: Thank you to my secret Santa, whoever they may be pt.
- 11:10Speaker 5: Thanks for keeping it all together. FYI, extra lean beef
- 11:14Speaker 5: is seven Merry Christmas cow PS. Well yeah, am I
- 11:23Speaker 5: supposed to read that?
- 11:24Speaker 1: Go ahead, you can read the first part of the PS.
- 11:26Speaker 2: Okay, with only the first part.
- 11:28Speaker 5: I'm gifting you of BHA family membership cow for anything better,
- 11:36Speaker 5: so much. But that's not all. There's also a bottle
- 11:40Speaker 5: of some kind m oh here we are Sailor Jerry
- 11:46Speaker 5: Spice drum.
- 11:47Speaker 7: Oh, the sailor in yourself.
- 11:49Speaker 5: That was the go to for my rum and cokes
- 11:52Speaker 5: back in college. Thank you so much. Cold and look
- 11:54Speaker 5: at this we've got. We've got frozen beef. And I'm
- 11:58Speaker 5: glad that I now know the exact value you at least.
- 12:02Speaker 7: No ground out ground four pounds?
- 12:08Speaker 1: How much money I'm saving?
- 12:10Speaker 5: Yes, if you were to go.
- 12:11Speaker 2: Buying ground out, probably more than B twenty bucks a pounds.
- 12:15Speaker 7: Right right?
- 12:16Speaker 1: I just that's context. Some people need context that.
- 12:19Speaker 5: It's not the money, Phil, that's right, secrets, Thank you
- 12:22Speaker 5: so much, it's the thought that counts.
- 12:24Speaker 7: This will all go to givety gifts sake.
- 12:29Speaker 2: Phil, I think we've lost our bed of music. Oh yeah, we'll.
- 12:32Speaker 5: Bring it back. Sorry, I've been busy opening.
- 12:35Speaker 2: How did you pick Sailor Jerry's when you were looking
- 12:37Speaker 2: at the realm shelf.
- 12:38Speaker 4: It's it's because Phil and I had a conversation a
- 12:41Speaker 4: long time ago about like.
- 12:44Speaker 1: Because there's like scary high end realms.
- 12:48Speaker 8: But I believe that the tiki crowd feels like Sailor
- 12:56Speaker 8: Jerry and Captain Morgan are totally fine for most things.
- 13:00Speaker 8: Was that correct for I'd say for for mixing cocktail
- 13:03Speaker 8: like like like like a like into a soda mixer.
- 13:06Speaker 8: But if you're gonna make it my tie, I mean honestly, Cal,
- 13:08Speaker 8: sailor Jerry's and and and uh and yeah, that's that's
- 13:12Speaker 8: a that's that's a cardinal sin. But I love Sailor
- 13:16Speaker 8: Jerrys and I'll use it.
- 13:17Speaker 2: Phil. Have you ever tried Mount Gay. That's some good
- 13:19Speaker 2: stuff I have.
- 13:20Speaker 1: Yeah, they got a lot of.
- 13:23Speaker 7: What a gift?
- 13:24Speaker 2: Okay, well done, Cal. That's that's fun for you, Phil, Max,
- 13:28Speaker 2: you're up next up.
- 13:32Speaker 4: It's supposed to be a little something for everybody.
- 13:36Speaker 2: Job.
- 13:37Speaker 1: I suck at rapping.
- 13:41Speaker 2: What do we got there? Maxwell?
- 13:43Speaker 7: Is this a puzzle?
- 13:45Speaker 3: Uh?
- 13:47Speaker 7: Puzzle? Him?
- 13:48Speaker 1: Itzed me? Phil?
- 13:50Speaker 2: What is this?
- 13:53Speaker 1: How do you know?
- 13:53Speaker 2: That?
- 13:53Speaker 3: Was me?
- 13:54Speaker 5: That's a game that's a that's a very easy to
- 13:56Speaker 5: learn board game called Cascadia where you create wildlife, corridor
- 14:00Speaker 5: and habitats for different.
- 14:04Speaker 2: When I saw that game existed, I was pissed off.
- 14:07Speaker 2: I didn't come up with that. Yeah, isn't this very
- 14:10Speaker 2: similar to like what's that game with the square risk you're.
- 14:14Speaker 5: Talking about catam I'd say it's it's easier than pick
- 14:18Speaker 5: up and play, which is.
- 14:19Speaker 1: Which is why.
- 14:21Speaker 2: Many fun nights to come at the bar house.
- 14:24Speaker 1: Board game season.
- 14:27Speaker 2: That's great for Maxwell. Next up, Brody up, who's handed
- 14:35Speaker 2: a fireball to Max. He's now his gift. Also a
- 14:39Speaker 2: swell gift wrapping job here.
- 14:43Speaker 7: Someone said Santa's language is going to demonetize this video.
- 14:48Speaker 7: I hope the suits don't notice.
- 14:52Speaker 1: They definitely will don't.
- 14:54Speaker 2: What do we got over there, Brody?
- 14:55Speaker 6: Wow, some.
- 14:59Speaker 2: Ladies glass bug bug like it, jig heads.
- 15:06Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 15:09Speaker 2: My kids were just asking about ice fish and I
- 15:11Speaker 2: was like, man, it's gonna be a while, but we'll
- 15:13Speaker 2: get those news this year.
- 15:15Speaker 1: Those really glasses.
- 15:17Speaker 5: Oh yeah, No, I didn't need the sex.
- 15:19Speaker 1: How do you know?
- 15:21Speaker 2: Look they're just round.
- 15:23Speaker 7: Look at the shape of them.
- 15:25Speaker 2: For christ Si, So Brody got a three pack of
- 15:30Speaker 2: readers from the drug store and some ice fishing lures.
- 15:33Speaker 1: That's a great present.
- 15:35Speaker 7: That's good.
- 15:36Speaker 2: You know, I scattered these things everywhere.
- 15:39Speaker 3: That's what I was thinking when I when I picked
- 15:41Speaker 3: those up for you, Brody, that uh, just leave the people.
- 15:44Speaker 1: You're gonna need to wear those to.
- 15:45Speaker 2: Tie I know, oh yeah, yeah yeah.
- 15:48Speaker 1: And you just leave those things everywhere. So that's great.
- 15:53Speaker 2: Next up. We have Ryan Callahan who had the same
- 15:56Speaker 2: wrapping paper as Brodie's.
- 15:58Speaker 7: Gift, because we all used the office wrapping.
- 16:02Speaker 2: Paper, it appears. So what do we have there? Caw CEOs.
- 16:10Speaker 7: Suit for a suit.
- 16:14Speaker 1: That's great America.
- 16:16Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 16:17Speaker 1: Yeah, he has a video so I can learn how
- 16:20Speaker 1: to time.
- 16:22Speaker 2: That's great with some bald eagles on it.
- 16:27Speaker 1: Got some warm up juice. Nice?
- 16:30Speaker 4: And what's this one say?
- 16:35Speaker 2: He gets a shirt?
- 16:37Speaker 7: I didn't mean sorry, I'm late.
- 16:41Speaker 1: I didn't want to come.
- 16:48Speaker 2: Who do you think gave that to you? Cal?
- 16:50Speaker 1: I have so many occasions where this is.
- 16:55Speaker 2: He would have borne it today, he already had it.
- 16:59Speaker 2: Who do you think gave that to you?
- 17:01Speaker 1: People who pay attention?
- 17:03Speaker 7: Okay, I'll give you a hint. That tie used to
- 17:08Speaker 7: belong to my father in law. Okay, very good, Wow
- 17:18Speaker 7: a novelty tie.
- 17:21Speaker 2: Give me an example of a place he would wear
- 17:23Speaker 2: that tie to work? Work? Very good. That'll that'll work
- 17:27Speaker 2: well for the future. CEO of VHA, thank you.
- 17:31Speaker 1: All right.
- 17:32Speaker 2: I am now going to open my gift, my gift
- 17:34Speaker 2: which was wrapped in a meat Eater Trivia Collector's edition
- 17:37Speaker 2: animal box.
- 17:38Speaker 7: Oh oh, all right.
- 17:40Speaker 2: We have some halbit labeled twenty twenty five in here.
- 17:44Speaker 2: That is great. I do not have any halbit in
- 17:46Speaker 2: a freezer, nor have you got a nice gift twenty
- 17:52Speaker 2: twenty five that is phenomenal. I had to line up
- 17:56Speaker 2: the gift exchange so I know this came from Brody,
- 17:58Speaker 2: and Brody even warned me. He said, you drew the
- 18:01Speaker 2: short straw by having by me or by Brody having
- 18:05Speaker 2: my name. But that is a phenomenal gift.
- 18:07Speaker 5: I gotta tell you, Spencer, I was really torn about
- 18:10Speaker 5: giving that back.
- 18:14Speaker 2: What do you think I should do with this? King salmon?
- 18:16Speaker 2: Give me a recommendation. Well, you're gonna let your wife
- 18:19Speaker 2: eat it with you or she's uninterested in Is that right?
- 18:22Speaker 2: That's right? This is gonna be for me. This is
- 18:26Speaker 2: just gonna be for me. I think I should cook
- 18:28Speaker 2: that very simply. You could grill it, you know, butter lemon.
- 18:33Speaker 7: Whatever.
- 18:35Speaker 5: Yeah, don't overdo it.
- 18:37Speaker 1: As you said, don't ever do that.
- 18:38Speaker 2: Don't overdo it. Good advice, Brody. That is a wonderful gift.
- 18:44Speaker 2: That's well done, very efficient. Next up we have Seth
- 18:49Speaker 2: Now who has how many gifts are in front of you?
- 18:52Speaker 7: Someone must have been a very good boy.
- 18:56Speaker 2: They're numbered so I gotta okay, I assume that you
- 18:59Speaker 2: should start with number one. It looks like, all right,
- 19:02Speaker 2: here we go. This one is wrapped like as though
- 19:06Speaker 2: a candy, maybe giant piece of candy. Sure a baseball
- 19:11Speaker 2: bat would fit in there.
- 19:12Speaker 1: What could this be wrapped in? Butcher paper, carrot?
- 19:16Speaker 7: My dogs have the same thing.
- 19:18Speaker 2: Okay, I wouldn't. I wouldn't recognize that as a dog toy?
- 19:23Speaker 1: Is that what it is?
- 19:27Speaker 2: Giant dog? That's the size of your dog. The thing
- 19:30Speaker 2: is that's a Boon and Crockett Carr your dog?
- 19:34Speaker 1: Do your dogs like it? Will my dog like it?
- 19:38Speaker 2: Santa? What do your dog like that?
- 19:41Speaker 7: No, they're scared of any toy that squeaks.
- 19:45Speaker 2: Now he's got a T shirt.
- 19:48Speaker 7: That's my shirt. That's shirt? What what the hell? No
- 20:03Speaker 7: arms from my own house. This is cultural appropriate.
- 20:06Speaker 2: Seth is now open. There's a T shirt.
- 20:08Speaker 7: This isn't a gun.
- 20:09Speaker 2: These are an ape on the front and the other
- 20:13Speaker 2: is a lebron James jersey. Now he's on the gift
- 20:17Speaker 2: number three.
- 20:19Speaker 7: That's not yours, Randall, this is mine, It is mine.
- 20:22Speaker 1: Oh look at these A new pair of shoes had
- 20:24Speaker 1: been warning.
- 20:32Speaker 2: It's very well used.
- 20:33Speaker 7: Shoes that looks familiar. These are all my most treasured possessions. Seth.
- 20:38Speaker 2: I didn't know you're going to start playing basketball. That
- 20:44Speaker 2: is a great shirt.
- 20:45Speaker 7: I was just wearing that the other day.
- 20:48Speaker 2: Well, that's that's kind of weird you would give him
- 20:50Speaker 2: all this stuff? Man?
- 20:51Speaker 7: Did you give all this to me?
- 20:52Speaker 1: Thank you?
- 20:54Speaker 7: No, I don't know how this got here.
- 20:57Speaker 2: You better talk to missus Clas.
- 21:05Speaker 7: Jackson.
- 21:05Speaker 2: Since Randall's not here, you might want to consider regifting those.
- 21:14Speaker 7: Jackson Hayes of the Los Angeles Lakers gave me a
- 21:17Speaker 7: fist bump and said, sweet Jersey Bra, that's my legit.
- 21:22Speaker 2: Very good, lord, legit your hands off now it belongs
- 21:25Speaker 2: to Seth Son of them. That is set story.
- 21:28Speaker 7: Now, I'm bewildered by this. This is a horrible prank.
- 21:33Speaker 2: How about you opened up Randall's gift now they're Santa.
- 21:36Speaker 7: Okay, he's gonna need a gift card to pay for
- 21:40Speaker 7: all the stuff that he's lost.
- 21:43Speaker 2: Again. We have a dog toy, jersey, a T shirt,
- 21:46Speaker 2: and a pair of sneakers. This is a gift card
- 21:50Speaker 2: to d og d o g Oh, that's a pet place,
- 21:54Speaker 2: a pet place.
- 21:55Speaker 7: That's good. I have three Randall has three pets and
- 22:02Speaker 7: they're all very needy, so he will be most appreciative
- 22:06Speaker 7: of this.
- 22:06Speaker 2: Uh huh, Santa, let's try to solve the crime of
- 22:09Speaker 2: how these gifts wound up in Seth's possession. What do
- 22:13Speaker 2: you think happened here?
- 22:14Speaker 7: My wife was in on it.
- 22:17Speaker 5: I know that.
- 22:18Speaker 7: But also we don't lock our house very often.
- 22:22Speaker 2: Okay, let's not look on it.
- 22:25Speaker 7: We caught that film.
- 22:28Speaker 2: I think your full name is on your land these shoes?
- 22:32Speaker 2: Does My dog hates this toy?
- 22:37Speaker 7: Sy hates that shirt, but I didn't know that she
- 22:42Speaker 7: didn't like these shirts. I was literally wearing this just
- 22:46Speaker 7: the other day. It's from the San Diego Zoom and
- 22:49Speaker 7: it made her juvenile.
- 22:50Speaker 2: Orangutand okay, so you've accused Cal with it. Was not Cal.
- 22:56Speaker 7: I only know. I only think of Cal because he
- 22:59Speaker 7: often is in and out out of my home.
- 23:02Speaker 2: Was not Cal?
- 23:03Speaker 7: Who else? Well, I suppose anybody could have slid into
- 23:07Speaker 7: her d MS.
- 23:08Speaker 2: On who's the next suspect?
- 23:15Speaker 7: Fill the engine?
- 23:16Speaker 1: It was not filled. It's like he's just lashing out.
- 23:22Speaker 7: Yeah, Spencer, it.
- 23:28Speaker 1: Was Yeah, I slid into in these dms.
- 23:33Speaker 2: Yes, I did. I actually did. Max was so proud
- 23:37Speaker 2: of this idea. He hasn't done a thing at work
- 23:39Speaker 2: all week, just preparing this.
- 23:41Speaker 7: To impressed that I recognized this toy and you.
- 23:45Speaker 1: Said it right away.
- 23:46Speaker 2: Oh my dogs have the same toy.
- 23:48Speaker 5: Missus Klaus gets lonely this time.
- 23:50Speaker 7: Ye watch your dirty mouth. Oh I'm having so much
- 23:56Speaker 7: I didn't wear much of a layer under this suit
- 23:58Speaker 7: because it was so warm last year. But I'm having
- 24:01Speaker 7: so much fun sweating again.
- 24:03Speaker 2: Yes, Max and Sydney, you guys had to meet up
- 24:06Speaker 2: in town, I imagine this week.
- 24:08Speaker 7: Oh that's fun.
- 24:09Speaker 2: Very good. Now we have a real gift here for Seth.
- 24:14Speaker 2: Just pull that bow.
- 24:15Speaker 6: There you go.
- 24:17Speaker 2: This is our final gift of the day.
- 24:19Speaker 7: That's I hope it's something you treasure, someone's taken out
- 24:25Speaker 7: of your home, your knowledge, apple butter.
- 24:31Speaker 1: Butter. Okay, that's great.
- 24:33Speaker 3: Oh some salsa m m okay, spicy restaurant style, there
- 24:39Speaker 3: you go, my favorite?
- 24:41Speaker 2: Your favorite? Wow?
- 24:42Speaker 7: Okay, you like restaurant style.
- 24:43Speaker 9: I do.
- 24:50Speaker 1: Some big old cook cookies. Oh my, who's this from?
- 24:55Speaker 1: That's for me?
- 24:56Speaker 2: When when pantry last night made you some cookies and
- 25:00Speaker 2: trying to get good at baking a few things, made
- 25:02Speaker 2: some cookies and then uh, it's.
- 25:07Speaker 1: Got some salt on there.
- 25:08Speaker 2: That's right, you can share.
- 25:10Speaker 7: That makes her a good cookie.
- 25:13Speaker 2: Seth also has a pregnant wife at home, so maybe
- 25:15Speaker 2: we got to leave one for her as well. Leave
- 25:18Speaker 2: one sorry, no milk, Sanna. Yeah, these are fantastical, thank you.
- 25:23Speaker 2: I'm just getting into baking. I'm trying to be like
- 25:26Speaker 2: not a one trick pony, but like a three trick pony.
- 25:29Speaker 2: So I want to learn how to make cookies first,
- 25:31Speaker 2: and then you know, I think I'm gonna move on
- 25:32Speaker 2: to banana bread soon. The apple butter that was made
- 25:35Speaker 2: with apples I found on my Idaho deer hunt this
- 25:38Speaker 2: year off from the mountains. I made that, and I
- 25:41Speaker 2: made the sauce, the salta ingredients those are just from
- 25:45Speaker 2: from Albertson's. The cookies though, the eggs came from my neighbor,
- 25:50Speaker 2: so some Gallatin Valley eggs there for you.
- 25:54Speaker 1: So did you make the labels?
- 25:56Speaker 2: My wife did. That's being married to a graphic designer.
- 26:00Speaker 2: You even got there, made the labels for it, the
- 26:03Speaker 2: ingredients on it. That's right, then, you know, in case
- 26:06Speaker 2: you're your allergic to anything, very good guest.
- 26:09Speaker 8: This year, s everybody did grating from Santa.
- 26:13Speaker 7: Now, I'm really the mood. This was a terrible mistake.
- 26:17Speaker 7: It doesn't breathe.
- 26:18Speaker 5: Well, Santa Randall didn't show up today, if you wouldn't
- 26:21Speaker 5: mind filling in for him, Yeah, I suppose.
- 26:25Speaker 1: This, Santa.
- 26:26Speaker 2: Your leatherman jacket from high school is upstairs in my office.
- 26:28Speaker 7: Oh ship, that one's awesome too.
- 26:30Speaker 2: Yeah, I was.
- 26:34Speaker 7: This jersey interestingly enough, has several typos on the back.
- 26:39Speaker 2: Oh, very interesting.
- 26:40Speaker 7: There's an extra digit under one of Lebron's Uh oh,
- 26:46Speaker 7: where's that? I'll find it.
- 26:50Speaker 2: Okay, good stuff from Santa Claus.
- 26:52Speaker 7: Yes, yes, good stuff.
- 26:54Speaker 2: That is the twenty five med Eater Radio gift.
- 26:58Speaker 7: So it says he won the most valuable player in
- 27:01Speaker 7: the year two zero zero one zero, which, as we
- 27:05Speaker 7: all know, was in the distant future.
- 27:07Speaker 2: That's right, Santa.
- 27:08Speaker 5: Will you still be around them?
- 27:11Speaker 7: Yes?
- 27:13Speaker 5: I wasn't sure if there was like a Santa Claus
- 27:14Speaker 5: ten Allen situation where someone would take your place.
- 27:16Speaker 7: No, there's no plan for succession in my line.
- 27:19Speaker 2: Okay, Media radio will still be going on as well,
- 27:22Speaker 2: that's right. Oh, and Santa is gonna stick around for
- 27:29Speaker 2: the rest of the show.
- 27:30Speaker 7: Yes, I will do. Thanks for joining us for this holiday.
- 27:37Speaker 2: Yee, Brody, Maxwell and Call are going to disappear, Phil,
- 27:43Speaker 2: thank you very much.
- 27:44Speaker 5: Oh yes, of course, fireball to be gone when I
- 27:48Speaker 5: check in later.
- 27:48Speaker 2: Yeah, we'll work on it. We'll work on it, all right,
- 27:51Speaker 2: Thank you boy, Christmas, We will see you later. All right,
- 27:56Speaker 2: let's take a break for some listener feedback. Goodness, what's
- 28:00Speaker 2: the chat have to say?
- 28:01Speaker 5: Okay, a Hunter says, ask Santa if he thinks anybody
- 28:04Speaker 5: is gonna stop the thunder this year?
- 28:06Speaker 7: The two damn good. But if recent NBA history tells
- 28:10Speaker 7: it's anything, it's that uh Shay gilges Alexander will rupt
- 28:14Speaker 7: her as a Chilleres tendon because that's what happens to
- 28:17Speaker 7: the best players in the league.
- 28:19Speaker 2: Very good, Well, nicolea Jokic is the best player in
- 28:22Speaker 2: the league. Oh sure, so you take that back. Oh
- 28:25Speaker 2: the Nuggets are gonna stop Okay, see this year, that's
- 28:28Speaker 2: what's gonna happen there, M Hunter's hut.
- 28:30Speaker 5: Jonathan Wahlberg asks, what is your recommendation for processing dear shanks,
- 28:35Speaker 5: specifically for Asbuko, I struggle to make clean cuts through
- 28:38Speaker 5: the bone when thought and don't have a band saw
- 28:40Speaker 5: to use when frozen sALS all.
- 28:42Speaker 1: Yeah, I use sALS all.
- 28:44Speaker 2: Cut through the meat that you can with a knife
- 28:46Speaker 2: and then do the rest of it with the sALS
- 28:48Speaker 2: all and you'll be just fine.
- 28:49Speaker 7: Or go to a butcher and ask if they can
- 28:52Speaker 7: band saw it there.
- 28:53Speaker 3: You go, like the salls all too, specifically the ones
- 28:57Speaker 3: that you can just like you grab bond to the
- 29:00Speaker 3: kind of the top of it. M h. It's easier
- 29:02Speaker 3: to hold that one that kind and and then be
- 29:05Speaker 3: able to hold the shank too and just zip through them.
- 29:07Speaker 2: You know, pretty quickly if you have the right blade
- 29:09Speaker 2: on your saws all when you're going through bone.
- 29:11Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 29:11Speaker 3: And you can go on Amazon two or wherever butcher
- 29:15Speaker 3: products are sold and buy stainless steel saws all blades
- 29:19Speaker 3: specific for that.
- 29:20Speaker 2: Do they do they are they labeled like steel or
- 29:23Speaker 2: wood or do they say bone on them? I'm always
- 29:26Speaker 2: using ones that are labeled for wood or steel.
- 29:29Speaker 3: You know, I just I just went on on I
- 29:30Speaker 3: think I got them on Amazon, and they're like specific
- 29:33Speaker 3: bone saw like butchering blades that to the tool chest.
- 29:38Speaker 2: M you know.
- 29:39Speaker 5: Those are pretty much the only real substantive questions people
- 29:44Speaker 5: have been.
- 29:45Speaker 7: Distracted And I would hope entertain one question.
- 29:49Speaker 2: Hopefully entertained chat maybe maybe brew up some questions for
- 29:52Speaker 2: Santa for the next time we check in with you.
- 29:54Speaker 2: If you want to know, if someone's on the knot
- 29:56Speaker 2: of your nice list, what Santa does in the off season.
- 30:00Speaker 2: Please shoot those questions over well and we'll address him
- 30:03Speaker 2: in about a half hour.
- 30:04Speaker 5: Oh, this one's very substantive. Seth Jones says he was
- 30:07Speaker 5: skeptical at the start of the D and D episode,
- 30:08Speaker 5: me and you both, Seth. He didn't really enjoy it though,
- 30:11Speaker 5: and would like to see more interesting comments. Seth, thanks
- 30:13Speaker 5: agating it.
- 30:14Speaker 2: Okay, good stuff. We'll try to get more of that
- 30:17Speaker 2: in twenty twenty six.
- 30:19Speaker 7: Spencer, if you had to eat Randall, how would you
- 30:22Speaker 7: cook him?
- 30:24Speaker 2: Well, what do you think, Santa?
- 30:26Speaker 1: Oh, well done, well done?
- 30:32Speaker 7: You don't know.
- 30:34Speaker 2: Yeah, he's an old ruddy buck. We probably got to
- 30:38Speaker 2: marinate him overnight. Go low and slow, not the hot
- 30:42Speaker 2: and fast kind of meat.
- 30:44Speaker 7: And you're gonna have a lot of rendering to do afterwards.
- 30:48Speaker 2: Okay, that we'll sort that all out in the crap.
- 30:51Speaker 5: How about one more, Spencer, because this one it's a
- 30:55Speaker 5: gun to deer season.
- 30:56Speaker 1: What does that mean?
- 30:56Speaker 5: Does that mean something.
- 30:57Speaker 2: It means they have multiple gun seasons and this is
- 31:00Speaker 2: number two.
- 31:01Speaker 5: Gun beer I gotcha this week in Iowa and the
- 31:04Speaker 5: daily Heiser three and one degrees. You think it's worth
- 31:06Speaker 5: my time in the woods to go out or should
- 31:09Speaker 5: they wait until Monday when the heiser in the thirties.
- 31:11Speaker 2: Absolutely, that is the best time to go out, especially
- 31:14Speaker 2: if you have access to agriculture in Iowa. I assume
- 31:17Speaker 2: it's going to be beans or corn for you, even
- 31:20Speaker 2: if that field has been harvested already. The deer got
- 31:23Speaker 2: to eat every day. They're going to be out there.
- 31:26Speaker 2: They're going to pile into agriculture in your neighborhood. If
- 31:29Speaker 2: you have it, be out there, PMJ. I would be
- 31:31Speaker 2: very excited about those temperatures rather than pessimistic.
- 31:34Speaker 3: Yeah, and I wouldn't I wouldn't be shy about sitting
- 31:37Speaker 3: all day if you can, if you can handle.
- 31:39Speaker 7: It, Yes, when it's very cold at the North Pole,
- 31:42Speaker 7: my friends are on their feet all day. If I
- 31:46Speaker 7: were trying to shoot them, that's when I'd go out.
- 31:49Speaker 2: Very good. And what cartridge would you take if you
- 31:51Speaker 2: were trying to shoot them?
- 31:52Speaker 7: Oh?
- 31:53Speaker 1: What census gun safe look like?
- 31:56Speaker 7: I'm a traditionalist. As you know, I'm atritionalist. Frequently. If
- 32:03Speaker 7: I were to calm I herd, it would most likely
- 32:07Speaker 7: be with a thirty thirty.
- 32:09Speaker 2: Okay, that is a tradition.
- 32:11Speaker 7: Wow, there's a lot of guts in reindeer, so you
- 32:14Speaker 7: know they're they're bigger animals. But you really don't need
- 32:17Speaker 7: to shoot them with a big magnum or anything. Just
- 32:19Speaker 7: get a nice expanding bullet and put it in the
- 32:23Speaker 7: front half.
- 32:24Speaker 2: There you go. All right, we will do some more
- 32:26Speaker 2: listening questions at the end of the show.
- 32:28Speaker 5: Please, I'll try to pay more attention to this name
- 32:30Speaker 5: for Santa.
- 32:31Speaker 7: All right.
- 32:31Speaker 2: Joining us on the line now is Kurt Steiner, the
- 32:35Speaker 2: man who holds the world record for skipping a rock
- 32:38Speaker 2: eighty eight times. Kurt, Welcome to the show.
- 32:43Speaker 6: Good to be here.
- 32:44Speaker 2: First, first thing, Kurt, thank you. Take us back to
- 32:48Speaker 2: that day in twenty thirteen when you set the world record.
- 32:51Speaker 2: Where were you at and what was it about that
- 32:54Speaker 2: particular throw that made it the greatest throw of all time?
- 32:59Speaker 6: Yeah? Well, can I give you a brief bit of
- 33:02Speaker 6: context here?
- 33:03Speaker 2: Yes?
- 33:03Speaker 7: Please?
- 33:03Speaker 9: I had actually I set the record originally in two
- 33:07Speaker 9: thousand and two, where I kind of introduced some new
- 33:12Speaker 9: power kind of attack methods to stone skipping, and that
- 33:17Speaker 9: held for five years, and a guy, a buddy of
- 33:21Speaker 9: mine since passed, but he took the record in two
- 33:26Speaker 9: thousand and seven.
- 33:28Speaker 6: So then it was on.
- 33:29Speaker 9: You know, we've been fighting each other for ten years,
- 33:31Speaker 9: kind of developing this whole sport really, and twenty thirteen
- 33:35Speaker 9: came and I've been saving stones probably for ten years,
- 33:40Speaker 9: wait for the day. Yeah, yeah, because you know, mother
- 33:43Speaker 9: nature never seems fit to like make exactly the right stone,
- 33:46Speaker 9: so you put it aside, you save it for tournament
- 33:51Speaker 9: or in this case, a record attempt, And so I
- 33:53Speaker 9: had about five hundred stones set aside, which was it
- 33:57Speaker 9: was enough for two attempts. The first one I kind
- 34:01Speaker 9: of blew early in twenty thirteen in July because I
- 34:04Speaker 9: didn't get a good camera angle on it.
- 34:07Speaker 6: So September rolls around.
- 34:12Speaker 9: Long story short, I was ready for a second attempt,
- 34:18Speaker 9: and so I had my wife put her up on
- 34:21Speaker 9: a bridge and so you could look down on the
- 34:25Speaker 9: stones and you could count the ripples much better, and
- 34:30Speaker 9: it was it was.
- 34:31Speaker 6: It was a bit of a magical day. I won't lie.
- 34:33Speaker 9: I kind of had things lined up for me I
- 34:37Speaker 9: had a bit of a tailwind, which helps, but I
- 34:39Speaker 9: also had a little bit of a low onshore kind
- 34:43Speaker 9: of ripple coming at me. So it was a good
- 34:46Speaker 9: combination for various technical reasons. And I just threw the
- 34:50Speaker 9: hell out of that stone.
- 34:52Speaker 6: And you know, I went through. I probably threw one
- 34:55Speaker 6: hundred that day, and I narrowed it down to looking
- 35:00Speaker 6: at a frame by frame, finally sent it out and I,
- 35:04Speaker 6: you know, I had a group of counts between eighty
- 35:08Speaker 6: eight and ninety, so I just took the lowest one,
- 35:11Speaker 6: figuring that's kind of like everybody agrees on that. And
- 35:15Speaker 6: it's held up very good.
- 35:17Speaker 2: Wow, eighty eight skip throw. It's still the record to
- 35:20Speaker 2: this day. Now, you've been competing in stone skipping competitions
- 35:24Speaker 2: around the world for twenty five years. Explain to us
- 35:27Speaker 2: how these competitions are set up and how they differ
- 35:29Speaker 2: in the US versus Europe.
- 35:32Speaker 6: Right, Well, the US, yeah, oh oh okay, yeah, yeah,
- 35:40Speaker 6: I thought you lost me.
- 35:42Speaker 9: In the US, we basically count skips and that's what
- 35:46Speaker 9: stone skipping is. In Europe, they actually count distance. They
- 35:53Speaker 9: measure the distance you throw and to distinguish what they
- 35:55Speaker 9: call it skimming. So I've been in both tournaments. I
- 36:00Speaker 9: went to UK in twenty eighteen and and I threw
- 36:05Speaker 9: three hundred and seventy three feet and it and that,
- 36:10Speaker 9: and that was at that time the longest recorded throw
- 36:14Speaker 9: of a natural stone. But then the next day, twenty
- 36:18Speaker 9: four hours later, Scottish guy came down and Dougie Isaac's
- 36:22Speaker 9: and threw four hundred feet. So so I'm still he
- 36:26Speaker 9: still got the record at four hundred there, but I'm
- 36:29Speaker 9: I still got the skip count, and I'm and I'm
- 36:31Speaker 9: and I'm well placed in the in the skimming category.
- 36:34Speaker 9: The other thing is the Japanese happened to also be
- 36:37Speaker 9: a bit of a hotspot, so it's kind of New England, US,
- 36:43Speaker 9: the British and then and then Japan and the Japanese
- 36:49Speaker 9: kind of combine everything and they just they have two
- 36:51Speaker 9: guys throw and decide they just judge who threw the
- 36:55Speaker 9: better rock on that throw, and they just kind of
- 36:57Speaker 9: go through that and a kind of round robin and
- 37:00Speaker 9: a best of three format, and eventually you know, they
- 37:04Speaker 9: spit it out a good winner. It's kind of a
- 37:07Speaker 9: combination of the esthetic appearance of it, distance, skip down,
- 37:11Speaker 9: all of it together, so they're all different flavors, and
- 37:14Speaker 9: we've all kind of cross pollinated each other over the
- 37:17Speaker 9: decades here, and and I kind of take you know,
- 37:20Speaker 9: I would take a little bit of pride in being
- 37:21Speaker 9: kind of pushing all that, sacrificing a lot of my
- 37:25Speaker 9: life to.
- 37:25Speaker 6: Do, you know, playing playing you know that's great now,
- 37:30Speaker 6: even making the thing.
- 37:31Speaker 2: You know, you usually bring your own stones to competitions.
- 37:34Speaker 2: Where do you gather your rocks from?
- 37:38Speaker 9: Yeah, I get about ninety percent of my stones from
- 37:41Speaker 9: the southeast coast of Lake Erie. I grew up in Erie,
- 37:46Speaker 9: you know, which is between Cleveland and Buffalo there and
- 37:49Speaker 9: the geology and the water, you know, the waves of
- 37:52Speaker 9: Lake Erie kind of combined and make a really good
- 37:54Speaker 9: skipping rock.
- 37:57Speaker 6: That's where I grew up right there.
- 37:59Speaker 9: Now, of course I'm living up on a mountain off
- 38:02Speaker 9: grid here in Apalachia, PA. And so I have to
- 38:07Speaker 9: drive three hours to get my rocks. I got all
- 38:09Speaker 9: the water in the world, but the stones are ship
- 38:12Speaker 9: you know. But uh, I'm going up to see my mom,
- 38:17Speaker 9: get some rocks, come back and have some fun. Uh Yeah,
- 38:22Speaker 9: And and uh, the the Scottish have a place up
- 38:25Speaker 9: in North Scotland with some really great slate, And there's
- 38:28Speaker 9: a place up in North Vermont with some really really
- 38:32Speaker 9: beautiful rocks, but I put.
- 38:34Speaker 6: The ones I go to very accessible, and they're kind
- 38:38Speaker 6: of like number four on my World Best list, you know.
- 38:43Speaker 2: So I got Lucky described for us the perfect rock.
- 38:51Speaker 9: Uh, it kind of depends like that's like saying, what's
- 38:53Speaker 9: the perfect tool? You know, it's it's you got to
- 38:57Speaker 9: know what is it? What is it you're trying to do?
- 38:59Speaker 9: And then and then you look for those features in
- 39:02Speaker 9: the stone and and it takes many years of kind
- 39:06Speaker 9: of being able to imagine. Imagine if you were a
- 39:09Speaker 9: you know, I don't know, a pitcher or a bowler
- 39:11Speaker 9: or a hockey player or something, and every time you
- 39:13Speaker 9: went to take a whack at the thing or throw
- 39:16Speaker 9: the thing, it was a different size of different shape,
- 39:18Speaker 9: different weight, out of balance.
- 39:19Speaker 6: You know.
- 39:20Speaker 9: So so the skill is in learning how to look
- 39:25Speaker 9: through all the junk and find the one that's gonna
- 39:29Speaker 9: do what you want. And and so with that preface there,
- 39:34Speaker 9: what I would say is, in general, you're gonna want
- 39:37Speaker 9: something that's got a very flat bottom. You're gonna want
- 39:40Speaker 9: something that's kind of got a very smooth texture. Those
- 39:43Speaker 9: are kind of the obvious ones. Something to look for
- 39:47Speaker 9: is between the bottom side and the edge, that kind
- 39:51Speaker 9: of transition edge right here. What I would say is
- 39:55Speaker 9: that the flatter the water, the sharper that edge can be.
- 40:00Speaker 9: And so you there's a lot of experimentation, a lot
- 40:04Speaker 9: of trying this, seeing what happens, and then and then
- 40:09Speaker 9: adapting your next throw to that. And what I would
- 40:13Speaker 9: say though, is, you know, I generally throw four to
- 40:17Speaker 9: six ounces. Uh you know, we're throwing probably around seventy
- 40:22Speaker 9: miles an hour and maybe twenty five maybe twenty five
- 40:27Speaker 9: hundred or three thousand rpm.
- 40:29Speaker 6: Right so.
- 40:31Speaker 9: A distance thrower will back off the spin a little
- 40:34Speaker 9: bit and go for more velocity.
- 40:37Speaker 6: You know, I spent like five years, you know, figuring
- 40:41Speaker 6: out like that kind of whip rate there.
- 40:44Speaker 9: If you can see that where I'm pulling down to
- 40:46Speaker 9: the ground and then driving back up against my my
- 40:49Speaker 9: my body and then letting my hands snap out, and
- 40:52Speaker 9: that really generates some good spin and that and that
- 40:56Speaker 9: spin and turn with all the well kind of chop
- 40:59Speaker 9: the water kind of like a like maybe a hydroplane
- 41:02Speaker 9: boat propeller kind of you know, chopping at it, and
- 41:05Speaker 9: that adds up so uh so basically flat bottom kind
- 41:10Speaker 9: of a maybe a radius of curvature on that bottom
- 41:14Speaker 9: edge of maybe maybe an eighth of an inch. Uh,
- 41:17Speaker 9: you know, something about the size of your palm, maybe
- 41:20Speaker 9: four to five ounces.
- 41:22Speaker 6: Uh and and uh smooth.
- 41:24Speaker 7: You know.
- 41:24Speaker 6: The main thing is that bottom edge.
- 41:26Speaker 9: You just can't have any jaggedness in it or it
- 41:28Speaker 9: will bite the water, just like like trying to run
- 41:30Speaker 9: a radio saw backwards.
- 41:32Speaker 2: Right.
- 41:32Speaker 9: It's you need you need all the sharpness on your
- 41:37Speaker 9: the bottom edge of that stone to be kind of
- 41:39Speaker 9: feathering the water rather than biting into it.
- 41:42Speaker 6: If you can understand what I'm saying.
- 41:43Speaker 3: Sure, Yeah, Kurt, you mentioned when you the day that
- 41:47Speaker 3: you threw the record there, you had some ripples in
- 41:50Speaker 3: the water.
- 41:51Speaker 2: Do you prefer that over flat calm or what do
- 41:54Speaker 2: you prefer there?
- 41:56Speaker 6: Yeah?
- 41:57Speaker 9: Yeah, I mean I think of think of driving over
- 41:59Speaker 9: rumblestret right you're tired, gets some kind of a harmonic
- 42:03Speaker 9: there and uh and so you're you're kind of it's
- 42:07Speaker 9: the same kind of deal where if you're running over
- 42:09Speaker 9: the tops of just very regular ripples, it kind of
- 42:14Speaker 9: creates a like a stone's running over rumblestick strip. And uh,
- 42:21Speaker 9: the way I I mean I had some lucky waves
- 42:24Speaker 9: coming out. I say a wave, I mean I'm talking
- 42:25Speaker 9: like that much of a wave. That regular like one
- 42:29Speaker 9: foot intervals was just enough. But I also did kind
- 42:33Speaker 9: of a trick where I threw like a real deep
- 42:36Speaker 9: stone out and then if you wait just the right
- 42:40Speaker 9: amount of time ripples right, they kind of leave a
- 42:43Speaker 9: nice Uh.
- 42:46Speaker 6: Wow, that was a bit of a veteran trick there.
- 42:50Speaker 9: Yeah, yeah, and uh so, uh yeah, Because if the
- 42:54Speaker 9: water's too flat, what will happen is that the stone
- 42:57Speaker 9: will eventually bog down, just like like a baby. You
- 43:00Speaker 9: throw a baseball and all bounce, bounce, bounce like a grounder.
- 43:03Speaker 9: But then it'll kind of roll on the ground. This
- 43:06Speaker 9: is just like having a bumpy ground. So it kind
- 43:08Speaker 9: of keeps kicking up, you know, and it keeps kicking
- 43:10Speaker 9: it up, and so you can get more count out
- 43:12Speaker 9: of it. But power, there's usually enough power in your
- 43:15Speaker 9: throat you get a lot of skips, but once it
- 43:17Speaker 9: bogs and sticks to the water, like guinness, basically will
- 43:22Speaker 9: only count. The basic rule for counting in a world
- 43:28Speaker 9: record is you have to have a distinct evidence of
- 43:31Speaker 9: the water stone contacting the water, and then in whatever
- 43:36Speaker 9: next frame at some point you have to show clear
- 43:38Speaker 9: water between each contact point. So if you have a
- 43:42Speaker 9: stone that hits the slides ten feet, even though it
- 43:46Speaker 9: might look like ten or twenty skips in there and
- 43:50Speaker 9: it comes out as like one, right, you have one
- 43:52Speaker 9: water intext And so the great thing about that throw
- 43:56Speaker 9: I didn't thirteen with. It had very distinct, separate skips.
- 44:00Speaker 9: And you know, and I won't lie, it's it's been
- 44:03Speaker 9: kind of hard on the old body here. I'm starting
- 44:06Speaker 9: to age out.
- 44:07Speaker 6: I won't lie. I got some veteran tricks, but you know,
- 44:12Speaker 6: I've had i'd be like a rotator cuff surgery.
- 44:16Speaker 2: And in.
- 44:20Speaker 6: Twenty eighteen when I threw that three seventy three, I.
- 44:22Speaker 9: Ripped an oblique muscle and I blew up like a
- 44:27Speaker 9: football and that was That was a nasty one.
- 44:31Speaker 6: On that one.
- 44:33Speaker 9: But now now I need knee injections, you know, from
- 44:37Speaker 9: coming down hard, because if you imagine, it's like a
- 44:41Speaker 9: baseball player maybe starting real high, like maybe seven feet up,
- 44:46Speaker 9: but we're letting the stones leave our hand, like maybe
- 44:49Speaker 9: only a foot off the ground, but we're really coming
- 44:53Speaker 9: down into that shot, and it just you know, it
- 44:56Speaker 9: just it's it's it's it's it's you know, I took
- 45:00Speaker 9: this fun little thing and turned it into like this.
- 45:03Speaker 9: You know, it's great, brutal, brutal like sports science kind
- 45:08Speaker 9: of thing, and oh it's great. You know it's great.
- 45:11Speaker 9: Now it's uh, Kurt.
- 45:14Speaker 2: We want to we want to be better at skipping
- 45:17Speaker 2: rocks ourselves. So please walk us through the perfect form.
- 45:21Speaker 2: What should our feet, our arms, our hands be doing
- 45:24Speaker 2: to make the best throw?
- 45:27Speaker 6: Difficult question to answer. But what I can do is
- 45:30Speaker 6: give you some pointers.
- 45:31Speaker 9: Right, I'm not going to tell you here's how you
- 45:33Speaker 9: throw a stone at thirty Yeah, you know, but but
- 45:37Speaker 9: as a rule of thumb, you.
- 45:38Speaker 6: Know you want to stand more.
- 45:40Speaker 9: You don't want to You want to kind of stand
- 45:42Speaker 9: maybe forty five degrees almost perpendicular to the water, right
- 45:46Speaker 9: with your your your fallow foot to the water.
- 45:50Speaker 6: But the main thing is you're gonna want to come
- 45:53Speaker 6: down at the water. Right. There's like, there's five things
- 45:56Speaker 6: to think about. I guess, Okay, the angle of the stone.
- 46:00Speaker 9: Coming at the water, right, if you let go from
- 46:04Speaker 9: around your knees and hit the water maybe ten ten
- 46:08Speaker 9: twelve feet out, that's a good all round angle, right,
- 46:13Speaker 9: So figure leaving the stone leaving between your waist and
- 46:18Speaker 9: your knee and hitting you know, maybe ten feet out,
- 46:22Speaker 9: and then there's the tilt of the stone right the
- 46:25Speaker 9: front edge of the rock. You want something that's maybe
- 46:30Speaker 9: ten degrees ten to twenty degrees coming out of your hand.
- 46:36Speaker 9: And the rule there is if the stone bounces up
- 46:39Speaker 9: too high after that, after that first skip, then lower
- 46:43Speaker 9: the edge down right. So most people will throw with
- 46:46Speaker 9: too much of an angle, it will bounce high, and
- 46:49Speaker 9: the pros tend to throw with a real shallow angle,
- 46:51Speaker 9: so it comes down and then takes off horors only.
- 46:55Speaker 9: So if it bounces up lower that tilt come in,
- 46:59Speaker 9: you know, maybe like that. And then other things is
- 47:04Speaker 9: the spin. The spin is just gonna come out naturally,
- 47:06Speaker 9: but you are gonna want to hold the stone at
- 47:09Speaker 9: What I would say is if you look around the perimeter,
- 47:12Speaker 9: it's gonna have different like radii like it's it's got
- 47:15Speaker 9: different lengths depending on the irregularity of the rock.
- 47:19Speaker 6: You want to grab. Grab the longest point on the rock,
- 47:22Speaker 6: like put it right in the middle of your pad
- 47:24Speaker 6: of your finger.
- 47:27Speaker 9: Or your middle finger, which which I have developed also
- 47:31Speaker 9: for different throws, but but right in the middle of
- 47:33Speaker 9: that tip of the pad on the point down at
- 47:37Speaker 9: that angle. And then if you want a little throw
- 47:40Speaker 9: tip or secret when you when your rocks leaving your
- 47:44Speaker 9: hand right this direction, I usually throw it just a
- 47:47Speaker 9: little bit of right hand roll in it right like
- 47:51Speaker 9: the stone is spinning clockwise for a right handed person,
- 47:55Speaker 9: and I'm leaning that right edge, the outside edge, if
- 47:58Speaker 9: you will, of the stone towards the water a little
- 48:02Speaker 9: because as the stone flies through the air, if you notice,
- 48:06Speaker 9: it'll roll over, uh counterclockwise. So just kind of loading
- 48:12Speaker 9: that stone a tad with just maybe two degrees of
- 48:15Speaker 9: of roll pre roll, pre loading the stone. By the
- 48:20Speaker 9: time it hits the water, it'll come down a little
- 48:22Speaker 9: bit flatter, and it makes it a little more stable
- 48:25Speaker 9: and sticks a little better.
- 48:27Speaker 1: You know.
- 48:27Speaker 6: It's it's it's subtle stuff.
- 48:30Speaker 2: A lot of physics. It sounds like it is it is,
- 48:33Speaker 2: and and it does come.
- 48:34Speaker 9: Down a lot to the difference between a natural and
- 48:38Speaker 9: an artificial rock. I'm kind of a purest. Natural rocks
- 48:42Speaker 9: are much harder to uh master, so there's a little
- 48:46Speaker 9: bit more prestige, I think, yeah, and throwing what.
- 48:50Speaker 6: I won't lie. I mean, we have especially in Europe
- 48:53Speaker 6: where they're they're just looking for distance numbers, right they
- 48:56Speaker 6: they they'll go, they'll make artificial rocks and they'll blast
- 49:00Speaker 6: the guy just last month threw a stone over five
- 49:03Speaker 6: hundred feet, as I understand it, using an artificial stone.
- 49:10Speaker 6: So that's that's all well and good.
- 49:12Speaker 9: But uh, you know, Isaac's when he beat me, he
- 49:15Speaker 9: threw he threw four hundred with a natural rock, and
- 49:17Speaker 9: I consider that actually even more impressive because he went
- 49:21Speaker 9: out and dug it out of the ground.
- 49:23Speaker 5: You know.
- 49:23Speaker 2: Good, Yeah, all right, Well, good luck to your next competition. Kurt.
- 49:28Speaker 2: Congrats on that eighty eight skip world record throw. Thank
- 49:33Speaker 2: you for educating us, and thank you for joining us.
- 49:36Speaker 6: Yeah, hey, thanks for the opportunity. Dudes cost some fun.
- 49:39Speaker 7: Thank you, Kurt. I think that's the best interview I've
- 49:44Speaker 7: ever done. It's not often we have an interview where
- 49:48Speaker 7: I just sit there and watch and I'm fully entranced
- 49:52Speaker 7: by our guest. But that was that was something special.
- 49:56Speaker 5: Means a lot that you're saying, we Santa like you
- 49:57Speaker 5: just kind of feel like you're a part of the crew.
- 49:59Speaker 2: That's a good phil Do you you boys fashion yourself
- 50:03Speaker 2: good rock skippers?
- 50:05Speaker 7: No?
- 50:07Speaker 1: I you know, I grew up. It sounds like not
- 50:10Speaker 1: too far from from where.
- 50:11Speaker 2: He's in the blood.
- 50:12Speaker 3: Yeah, and uh, you know, I never really hit the
- 50:16Speaker 3: banks of Lake Erie to find a good skipping wrong,
- 50:18Speaker 3: but I've skipped some rocks in my day.
- 50:20Speaker 7: You've missed out on your calling. I guess I prefer
- 50:25Speaker 7: to find the biggest rock I can get one skip
- 50:27Speaker 7: out of.
- 50:28Speaker 2: That's that's awesome, that's my approach. See how badly you
- 50:31Speaker 2: can hurt your arm.
- 50:33Speaker 7: That was fascinating.
- 50:34Speaker 1: That was That was good? All right.
- 50:38Speaker 2: Our next segment is gear talk.
- 50:44Speaker 7: Turn it up, Phil.
- 50:52Speaker 2: Feet because he doesn't have a choice.
- 51:02Speaker 5: Gear again?
- 51:03Speaker 2: Who the problem?
- 51:06Speaker 5: The problem with that one is that Giannis isn't here today.
- 51:08Speaker 2: That's brilliant and he rewrote that jingle. You must have
- 51:11Speaker 2: been feeling inspired.
- 51:12Speaker 5: I give us a new version the true story Spencers.
- 51:15Speaker 5: I forgot that I had a jingle for that. Oh
- 51:19Speaker 5: talk jingles.
- 51:20Speaker 7: Okay, Phil, I don't mean to tell you how to
- 51:22Speaker 7: do your job, but.
- 51:25Speaker 5: Put the one up.
- 51:26Speaker 1: I meant to do that one.
- 51:27Speaker 5: Thank you, Santa. This is you are a part of
- 51:29Speaker 5: the crew.
- 51:30Speaker 2: All right, Yes, Sanka, please start us off with some
- 51:33Speaker 2: gear talk today. What do you got?
- 51:35Speaker 7: Well, hold on one second.
- 51:37Speaker 2: Okay, he's uh, he's not fully prepared. Now he's grabbed
- 51:41Speaker 2: something from the shelf. I brought two items today, all right.
- 51:47Speaker 2: The first is this hat. Beautiful hat.
- 51:50Speaker 7: Now folks out there might say, oh, he's plugging first
- 51:54Speaker 7: light again in first lighting, He's not. This is the
- 51:57Speaker 7: best hat I've ever worn outside. It combines an almost
- 52:02Speaker 7: full sized brim that you'd find on a baseball cap
- 52:05Speaker 7: with a very warm wool, much like the wool in
- 52:09Speaker 7: our heavy, heavyweight sweaters and things of that nature whose
- 52:13Speaker 7: names I'm not remembering, but I often wear two hats.
- 52:18Speaker 7: When I have two hats when I go outside. I'll
- 52:21Speaker 7: have a lightweight hat in late season that I can
- 52:24Speaker 7: hike in and get sweaty, and then I like to
- 52:27Speaker 7: have a heavy hat that I can put on when
- 52:29Speaker 7: I'm gonna get cold. The problem is I don't want
- 52:34Speaker 7: to carry a third hat, so if I need a brim,
- 52:37Speaker 7: it often requires me to either bring a baseball cap
- 52:42Speaker 7: or bring a third hat, which I don't want to do.
- 52:46Speaker 7: So this is my first piece of gear.
- 52:48Speaker 2: Very good.
- 52:49Speaker 1: Where's this hat fit in your kit?
- 52:51Speaker 5: Oh?
- 52:52Speaker 7: This isn't performance kit. This is just a uniform ceremonial. Really,
- 52:58Speaker 7: the second is this Asiac tripod head.
- 53:03Speaker 2: Now I'm in the market for a new tripod, so
- 53:05Speaker 2: I'm going to need you to sell me on this one.
- 53:07Speaker 7: I'd like to focus just on the head. I have
- 53:10Speaker 7: never never liked lightweight tripods very much.
- 53:14Speaker 2: To me.
- 53:14Speaker 7: They don't serve the purpose of a tripod, which is
- 53:18Speaker 7: stabilizing your gear, your glass, what have you. And I
- 53:22Speaker 7: find a panhead to be the most useful type of
- 53:26Speaker 7: head for glassing large areas because you can work your
- 53:31Speaker 7: way methodically across the landscape as opposed to a ball
- 53:34Speaker 7: head where you simply loosen it and tilted around, especially
- 53:37Speaker 7: when using a heavy pair of binoculars like osi IS
- 53:41Speaker 7: eighteen with a fifty six milimeter objective or a spotting scope,
- 53:45Speaker 7: and so this head. Typically you need a heavier pan head.
- 53:51Speaker 7: But this head, which I just got this year, is
- 53:54Speaker 7: extremely white, lightweight, it's extremely compact, and it allows a
- 53:58Speaker 7: much lighter tripod to function as with the same performance
- 54:02Speaker 7: as a heavier tripod. So I'm now a light tripod man, okay.
- 54:06Speaker 7: And it's all due to the quality of this head.
- 54:09Speaker 7: It has very fine adjustments, so you can have it
- 54:12Speaker 7: so you can use your nose to knock your binoculars
- 54:16Speaker 7: around if you've got your hands in your podusts. It
- 54:19Speaker 7: also locks up tight if you're in a windy environment
- 54:22Speaker 7: and trying to glass something far away. And I just
- 54:24Speaker 7: can't say enough about this pan head. It's just fabulous,
- 54:30Speaker 7: very good gear talk review.
- 54:33Speaker 2: This year, on my South Dakota deer hunt, I had
- 54:36Speaker 2: pulled up to an approach for the property I was hunting.
- 54:38Speaker 2: I'd gotten out, I was glassing some deer off of
- 54:40Speaker 2: my spotter that I could see about a half mile away.
- 54:45Speaker 2: Messed around for a while, got in out of the truck,
- 54:47Speaker 2: looking at on X, looking through the spotter. Probably sat
- 54:49Speaker 2: there for like a half hour, went to leave, pull away,
- 54:52Speaker 2: and crunch. I run over my tripod with the spotting
- 54:56Speaker 2: scope on. It did not damage the spotting scope, luckily,
- 55:00Speaker 2: but I crushed my tripod that I've had for like
- 55:02Speaker 2: a decade and it was a crampy tripod. So now
- 55:05Speaker 2: like conveniently, I just get to get a new tripod.
- 55:08Speaker 7: That's fantastic. Highly recommend this. Okay, Okay, I ran over
- 55:13Speaker 7: last year, did the same thing back in my truck
- 55:17Speaker 7: in the dark, lean my tripod and binos against the
- 55:20Speaker 7: truck while I fumbled for my keys, got in the
- 55:22Speaker 7: old truck and drove home and thought, damn, where is
- 55:26Speaker 7: those binos? Went back the next day. I didn't run
- 55:28Speaker 7: them over. Someone else did, but they were just toast.
- 55:30Speaker 2: How do you know you didn't run them over?
- 55:32Speaker 7: Well, you could see the trucks, okay. And I wouldn't
- 55:35Speaker 7: be happy with myself if I were responsible, So I
- 55:37Speaker 7: blame it on whoever pilled in there.
- 55:39Speaker 2: For me there. Yeah, you gave it a quick death.
- 55:41Speaker 2: There was no suffering, all right, seth? What do you
- 55:44Speaker 2: got for gear? Talk?
- 55:47Speaker 3: What I got is very inexpensive. In fact, it's free
- 55:51Speaker 3: and it's very effective. It's not the bino harness, which
- 55:53Speaker 3: this is a great bin of harness, a bitchf gear.
- 55:56Speaker 3: But it's what I keep in the side over here.
- 55:58Speaker 3: And this is you know, this has become I would say,
- 56:01Speaker 3: more and more popular over the years. But instead of
- 56:03Speaker 3: having one of them, like you know the little puffer
- 56:05Speaker 3: bottles for my wndicator, this is milk weed.
- 56:09Speaker 2: Love it.
- 56:10Speaker 1: Oh, this is just natural material.
- 56:13Speaker 2: Send some of that into the act milkweed for us.
- 56:15Speaker 1: Look how I don't know if you can see this?
- 56:17Speaker 1: Look how it just floats?
- 56:19Speaker 2: Uh huh it's wonderful love milk weed.
- 56:22Speaker 1: It just floats.
- 56:22Speaker 2: You can watch that stuff float away for one hundred yards.
- 56:25Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah, especially if you're in a tree stand where
- 56:27Speaker 3: you're elevated. You drop a piece of that, you can
- 56:29Speaker 3: see exactly where your sense going. And like you said,
- 56:33Speaker 3: I've sat there with my binoculars and watched it go
- 56:36Speaker 3: one hundred plus yards out from where I was sitting.
- 56:38Speaker 1: You can, you can see exactly where your sen's blowing.
- 56:40Speaker 2: You just keep some in the side pouch. You're buying
- 56:42Speaker 2: a harness, Yep.
- 56:43Speaker 3: Yep, keep it right there, and it's just always ready
- 56:45Speaker 3: to go when I need it. And it's very cheap
- 56:48Speaker 3: because it's natural, and I get it right off the landscape.
- 56:51Speaker 2: And I know Seth did this. I'm just reminding others.
- 56:53Speaker 2: But leave the seeds where you find them. Just take
- 56:56Speaker 2: the white stuff. What does it even call it? Zabname?
- 56:58Speaker 2: Just like that whatever that hair? Yeah, probably like substances.
- 57:01Speaker 1: Probably it's Yeah.
- 57:03Speaker 2: That way, you're not spread and milkweed all over the continent.
- 57:07Speaker 2: The best wendicater nature could give you good stuff? All right.
- 57:11Speaker 2: For gear talk today, I am revisiting the gas can dilemma.
- 57:16Speaker 2: Last month I had declared that I haven't used a
- 57:20Speaker 2: good gas can in a decade, and all the best
- 57:22Speaker 2: gas cans in my life came from my dad. That are,
- 57:25Speaker 2: you know, as old as I am. So I asked
- 57:27Speaker 2: folks to write in with gas cans that they really liked.
- 57:31Speaker 2: I got one hundred and sixty one emails from listeners
- 57:33Speaker 2: recommending gas cans, and there were four brands that were recommended,
- 57:37Speaker 2: far more than the others. Those four brands made up
- 57:40Speaker 2: sixty four percent of the emails I got. So here
- 57:43Speaker 2: they are starting at number four. That is the no
- 57:47Speaker 2: spill gas can. I had fourteen folks right in about
- 57:51Speaker 2: this one. A five gallon no spill can is thirty
- 57:54Speaker 2: nine dollars at Walmart. They claim to have one of
- 57:56Speaker 2: the fastest cans on the market. They say it drains
- 57:59Speaker 2: three gallons a minute, has a thumb controlled fuel spout
- 58:03Speaker 2: and view stripe. J Hatrup he said, if you're filling
- 58:07Speaker 2: something that's filled from the top, like a lawnmower or snowblower,
- 58:11Speaker 2: there is nothing better than a no spill can. These
- 58:15Speaker 2: are dead simple for top filling, but are basically worthless
- 58:18Speaker 2: for filling a vehicle. So that is the no spill can.
- 58:22Speaker 2: That is fourth place. Fourteen people that'd four of these
- 58:26Speaker 2: four of these. Number three is the sure Can. Nineteen
- 58:30Speaker 2: folks wrote in about this one five gallons Surecan is
- 58:33Speaker 2: eighty dollars at ACE. That is the most expensive one
- 58:36Speaker 2: from our list. It's got a spout at the bottom,
- 58:39Speaker 2: thumb control on the top. They say this design gives
- 58:42Speaker 2: you the best control when filling large machines. Ethan Lindquist
- 58:46Speaker 2: specifically said, I highly recommend sure Can gas cans. I
- 58:50Speaker 2: have six, and if never spilled. Best of all, you
- 58:52Speaker 2: can fill most things while standing up instead of bending over.
- 58:57Speaker 2: So that is the sure Can at number three, number two,
- 59:01Speaker 2: number two, we have the Tough Jug. Twenty one folks
- 59:05Speaker 2: wrote in recommending this five gallon Tough Jug is forty
- 59:08Speaker 2: two dollars from their website. They use an auto stop
- 59:11Speaker 2: technology that instantly shuts off flow when your container is full,
- 59:16Speaker 2: and has internal venting that helps prevent leaks. John Foley
- 59:20Speaker 2: he said, there's a reason these are on back order.
- 59:23Speaker 2: They're worth every penny. No leaks or glugs. I'm a
- 59:26Speaker 2: fire chief and after replacing my personal ones, every gas
- 59:29Speaker 2: can at the firehouse for small engines is now a
- 59:33Speaker 2: tough jug, so that is number two. Twenty one folks
- 59:36Speaker 2: recommended that number one. This had a dominating lead in
- 59:41Speaker 2: the polling from our listeners. Forty eight folks wrote in
- 59:44Speaker 2: recommending this one. Everybody seems to love this. It is
- 59:48Speaker 2: the VP Racing gas can. Five and a half gallon
- 59:52Speaker 2: VP Racing can is forty eight dollars at lows. They
- 59:56Speaker 2: have a wide grip and deluxe hose that won't spill.
- 59:59Speaker 2: Now here's the kicker. These are not sold as gas cans.
- 1:00:02Speaker 2: They explicitly say on their website that this is only
- 1:00:05Speaker 2: intended for non fuel products. Instead, they advertise them as
- 1:00:10Speaker 2: quote motorsport containers that can also pour auto fluids, bird seed, deercorn,
- 1:00:16Speaker 2: and water. But clearly most customers are putting gas in
- 1:00:20Speaker 2: them and by skirting some EPA regulations. They say the
- 1:00:26Speaker 2: best gas can on the market. Justin Bowman, he wrote
- 1:00:29Speaker 2: in to say VP Racing gas cans are by far
- 1:00:32Speaker 2: the best on the market. They'll make you feel like
- 1:00:34Speaker 2: you're pouring gas in two thousand and five, which is
- 1:00:37Speaker 2: about the strongest endorsement somebody could give to a gas can.
- 1:00:42Speaker 2: Forty eight folks wrote in recommending that about thirty three
- 1:00:45Speaker 2: percent of our audience said, that is an amazing gas
- 1:00:48Speaker 2: can from VP Race.
- 1:00:49Speaker 1: That's great.
- 1:00:50Speaker 5: I like how they use terminology to skirt the whole
- 1:00:53Speaker 5: gas can thing.
- 1:00:54Speaker 2: Yeah, it's not for fuel, very clear, it's not for fuel.
- 1:00:56Speaker 2: And somebody actually wrote in saying they live in one
- 1:00:59Speaker 2: of the states where you can't pump your own gas,
- 1:01:02Speaker 2: which I think New Jersey is Oregon used to be.
- 1:01:05Speaker 2: They said they've pulled up to a gas pump with
- 1:01:07Speaker 2: one of these VP Racing and the attendant will not
- 1:01:09Speaker 2: fill it, so you might run into that.
- 1:01:11Speaker 5: You may only use this bong for tobacco exactly.
- 1:01:14Speaker 2: Yes, very similar thing. VP Racing forty eight dollars can.
- 1:01:21Speaker 2: Everyone seems to love them. That is probably the can
- 1:01:24Speaker 2: I'm going to get. And there is your gas can
- 1:01:26Speaker 2: round up from Meat Eater listeners.
- 1:01:28Speaker 7: That's great, that's great, fantastic.
- 1:01:31Speaker 2: All right, that brings us to the end of the show.
- 1:01:33Speaker 1: Phil.
- 1:01:34Speaker 2: Let's get some final feedback from the chat.
- 1:01:35Speaker 5: Oh, let's do it get these in folks. You have
- 1:01:39Speaker 5: a trapping question. I thought, since Seth was here, we
- 1:01:42Speaker 5: tackled it's specifically northern Minnesota trappings. Hear Seth Crack at
- 1:01:49Speaker 5: Washington asks what terrain slash features or terrain features would
- 1:01:54Speaker 5: you look out for during his first Northeast Minnesota bobcat
- 1:01:58Speaker 5: slash fisher trapping season, and it's got a two twenty
- 1:02:01Speaker 5: cubby set by the way, Uh have any insights, that's a.
- 1:02:05Speaker 1: Good start fisher.
- 1:02:07Speaker 3: So fisher trapping which I've done in Pennsylvania and I
- 1:02:11Speaker 3: actually caught one.
- 1:02:15Speaker 1: I was trapped.
- 1:02:16Speaker 3: I was trapping an area that was heavy with uh
- 1:02:19Speaker 3: some porcupines which they like to feed on.
- 1:02:22Speaker 2: Oh I didn't know that about it.
- 1:02:24Speaker 1: Yeah, they'll they can.
- 1:02:25Speaker 3: They can somehow roll them over and get at them
- 1:02:28Speaker 3: without getting stuck from what they say. But and I,
- 1:02:34Speaker 3: you know, I had some trail cameras in that area
- 1:02:35Speaker 3: and was getting uh getting fishers on my trail cameras,
- 1:02:40Speaker 3: so I knew that they were there. So but like
- 1:02:44Speaker 3: terrain features, I was just in hard like hardwoods mixed
- 1:02:49Speaker 3: with some white pine that that just had like the
- 1:02:52Speaker 3: right forge for him. I guess, lots of pork pines,
- 1:02:56Speaker 3: lots of squirrels. So basically hardwood timber mixed with some conifers.
- 1:03:03Speaker 3: And then bobcats they like rocky stuff. So if there's
- 1:03:09Speaker 3: any sort of outcropping or you know, big boulders, they
- 1:03:16Speaker 3: like to work those edges. Or Steve and I actually
- 1:03:21Speaker 3: just call a bobcat yesterday here in Montana.
- 1:03:24Speaker 1: Good one. Yeah, thirty three and a half pounds.
- 1:03:27Speaker 7: Whoa. Yeah, that's a big kitty.
- 1:03:31Speaker 3: That was river bottom, the thick brushy stuff that had
- 1:03:35Speaker 3: plenty of pheasants and birds around.
- 1:03:38Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:03:38Speaker 2: Here's some insight from someone who's never trapped a bobcat
- 1:03:41Speaker 2: or tried. So this doesn't mean anything, but I grew
- 1:03:44Speaker 2: up in southeastern South Dakota, a place that is pretty
- 1:03:47Speaker 2: marginal bobcat habitat. But when I would come across bobcats,
- 1:03:51Speaker 2: it was in my places that were also the best
- 1:03:54Speaker 2: spots for turkey hunting, whether it was because the turkeys
- 1:03:57Speaker 2: were there or the bobcats and the turkeys just liked
- 1:03:59Speaker 2: the exact same thing. I imagine northern Minnesota is not
- 1:04:02Speaker 2: crawling with turkeys. So maybe if you come across pheasants
- 1:04:05Speaker 2: like Seth said, or turkeys, which is something I observed
- 1:04:08Speaker 2: in eastern South Dakota, uh, maybe you're prime for a
- 1:04:11Speaker 2: bobcat there.
- 1:04:12Speaker 1: Yep, good luck.
- 1:04:14Speaker 6: Cool.
- 1:04:15Speaker 5: Stephen Bullet says, please more, no more D and D episodes.
- 1:04:18Speaker 1: Wow.
- 1:04:18Speaker 5: Interesting couldn't it Steve.
- 1:04:21Speaker 2: Steve Barnello didn't even try to come up with a
- 1:04:23Speaker 2: good burner for that. He just had his own first
- 1:04:25Speaker 2: name in there and everything.
- 1:04:29Speaker 5: Hayden Fiddy. When rifle hunting for big game, do you
- 1:04:32Speaker 5: value full penetration or energy expansion of your bullet?
- 1:04:35Speaker 2: Santa?
- 1:04:36Speaker 1: What do you think? Well?
- 1:04:41Speaker 7: I have a couple answers. I would go for a
- 1:04:46Speaker 7: bullet that creates a wider wound channel. And the way
- 1:04:51Speaker 7: I would begin thinking about projectile selection is I would
- 1:04:56Speaker 7: find whatever you're looking for, figure out what the minimum
- 1:05:01Speaker 7: terminal velocity you need to make that bullet expand as
- 1:05:05Speaker 7: fully as it can, and then determine which cartridge is
- 1:05:09Speaker 7: going to launch that bullet at that speed to get
- 1:05:12Speaker 7: to the given range that you'd like. I think you
- 1:05:15Speaker 7: want big wounds. Wounds are what kill. Energy doesn't kill.
- 1:05:19Speaker 7: Big wounds kill full penetration. I think there aren't very
- 1:05:23Speaker 7: many bullets that you don't have to worry about penetration.
- 1:05:26Speaker 7: So that's a rambling answer which sort of skirted around
- 1:05:29Speaker 7: your question. But I like a bullet that upsets violently,
- 1:05:33Speaker 7: and I'm not too worried about shooting through you know,
- 1:05:36Speaker 7: four feet of wood. It's just bones and skin and muscle.
- 1:05:40Speaker 3: In Africa, when Steve was buffalo hunting, the first the
- 1:05:45Speaker 3: first round in the magazine, I guess the first round
- 1:05:48Speaker 3: that would come out of the magazine was a bullet
- 1:05:51Speaker 3: that would expand well, and then the other ones behind
- 1:05:56Speaker 3: that were penetrating rounds. That way, the first boll went
- 1:06:00Speaker 3: in expanded, created that good wound channel, and then the
- 1:06:03Speaker 3: follow up shots you just keep shooting into interesting.
- 1:06:06Speaker 1: You don't have it shots anymore, you know.
- 1:06:08Speaker 2: Do you know how deep you were penetrating those critters?
- 1:06:11Speaker 1: I had no clue.
- 1:06:12Speaker 7: It's all depends on the angle.
- 1:06:15Speaker 5: So that's just that's for buffalo hunting in Africa. But
- 1:06:18Speaker 5: you know something else, No, I.
- 1:06:21Speaker 7: Would just say. I would just say, I don't think
- 1:06:25Speaker 7: that energy is a good measure of a bullet's efficacy. Okay,
- 1:06:29Speaker 7: it's it's all about what that bullet mechanically does when
- 1:06:32Speaker 7: it hits an animal at a given speed.
- 1:06:36Speaker 2: Good answer, santive? What else you got?
- 1:06:37Speaker 5: Phil Cliff is wondering if if Randall and phill are
- 1:06:41Speaker 5: going to release any footage from the Big Buck Hunter
- 1:06:43Speaker 5: World Championships. Yes, look out for it early next year.
- 1:06:49Speaker 7: Q one that sounds like a fun little video.
- 1:06:52Speaker 5: It'll be a fun little again. It's going to be
- 1:06:54Speaker 5: like a short thing. It's not going to be like
- 1:06:55Speaker 5: an episode of Meat Eater or with that production value.
- 1:06:58Speaker 1: He's going to be.
- 1:06:58Speaker 2: Exactly I heard.
- 1:07:00Speaker 7: I heard a rumor in the office that there's some
- 1:07:02Speaker 7: sick footage of.
- 1:07:04Speaker 5: Real spoil it. Santa very very good. Mark asks, what's
- 1:07:14Speaker 5: the worst injury each of you have endured during hunting
- 1:07:17Speaker 5: or fishing?
- 1:07:19Speaker 2: Hmm I I And this was in twenty eighteen. I
- 1:07:23Speaker 2: was coming out of a tree stand one night in
- 1:07:25Speaker 2: South Dakota after a bowhunt in late October. My like
- 1:07:29Speaker 2: third to last step was not a step. It was
- 1:07:32Speaker 2: a tree branch that I had trimmed down to be
- 1:07:34Speaker 2: like six inches that I had put a lot of
- 1:07:36Speaker 2: faith in over the years, and that night it broke
- 1:07:39Speaker 2: and I fell, and it was a very shortfall, like
- 1:07:42Speaker 2: I landed on my feet, but on the way down
- 1:07:45Speaker 2: I hit a metal tree step that I had also
- 1:07:48Speaker 2: put in and it opened up my side and I
- 1:07:51Speaker 2: drove to the er. Yeah, they took some scans, UH,
- 1:07:55Speaker 2: stitched me up and I went on my way home.
- 1:07:58Speaker 2: And I was most devastated because one like I was
- 1:08:01Speaker 2: now going to worry my wife, who I'm always telling
- 1:08:05Speaker 2: like it's gonna be fine. I'm good, you know, like
- 1:08:07Speaker 2: it's I'm by myself, It's all gonna be whatever. But
- 1:08:10Speaker 2: then also the rut was coming up and I had
- 1:08:12Speaker 2: a rifle tag I was excited about, and I was like,
- 1:08:15Speaker 2: I'm gonna miss some rud haunts. About two weeks later,
- 1:08:18Speaker 2: I was back to hunting again, so it was all
- 1:08:21Speaker 2: it was all fine, and I still got that scar
- 1:08:24Speaker 2: seth worst injury.
- 1:08:25Speaker 3: I don't really have anything good cuts from knives and whatnot,
- 1:08:30Speaker 3: hooks in hands.
- 1:08:31Speaker 5: Hmm.
- 1:08:32Speaker 1: I I did something.
- 1:08:33Speaker 3: I tweaked my knee this year when I was packing
- 1:08:35Speaker 3: out my bowl. I've kind of been suffering with that
- 1:08:38Speaker 3: ever since.
- 1:08:39Speaker 1: But I don't know. I don't know if i'd call
- 1:08:41Speaker 1: that an injury.
- 1:08:42Speaker 2: Santa O.
- 1:08:44Speaker 7: Outside of the usual cuts, the first thing that comes
- 1:08:49Speaker 7: to mind is I was driving a jet boat that
- 1:08:52Speaker 7: was it had a poor design, very steep chimes, and
- 1:08:56Speaker 7: occasionally when you're power sliding it, it would grab and Uh,
- 1:09:01Speaker 7: I was coming around this big log We're at up
- 1:09:04Speaker 7: in Alaska, going full tilt, you know, and uh it
- 1:09:11Speaker 7: grabbed and I was thrown forward in the boat and
- 1:09:15Speaker 7: gave myself a concussion. We're pretty sure I didn't go
- 1:09:17Speaker 7: to a hospital, but I was pretty sick and nauseous
- 1:09:20Speaker 7: for the next day or so and hit my head
- 1:09:24Speaker 7: on the floor of the boat. YEP, I didn't like
- 1:09:26Speaker 7: that boat. We eventually, uh, we eventually put some floats
- 1:09:30Speaker 7: on the back to try to alleviate its handling characteristics
- 1:09:33Speaker 7: because again, the geometry of it was all off. But
- 1:09:37Speaker 7: I never really trusted that boat.
- 1:09:40Speaker 2: Santa made it here today.
- 1:09:41Speaker 7: Though, Yes, stung by bees too. I swell up quite
- 1:09:45Speaker 7: a bit.
- 1:09:46Speaker 5: Three crank asks or says first, I've gotten two roadkilled
- 1:09:49Speaker 5: deer this year. If you guys get roadkilled, do you
- 1:09:51Speaker 5: treat it differently when processing? Santa? Do you snag roadkill
- 1:09:55Speaker 5: in the sled?
- 1:09:56Speaker 7: The only roadkill I've ever taken was a bus that
- 1:10:00Speaker 7: my dad hit driving home from work when I was
- 1:10:03Speaker 7: a senior in high school. I had a broken leg
- 1:10:05Speaker 7: at the time, so my buddy picked me up and
- 1:10:08Speaker 7: we went and the cop shot the deer in the
- 1:10:10Speaker 7: head because it wasn't dead yet, so then we euroed
- 1:10:13Speaker 7: that skull. But we took the deer to a processor
- 1:10:16Speaker 7: because I wasn't hunting that year. There's a man named Patterson.
- 1:10:19Speaker 7: He had a tattoo on his arm of a castle
- 1:10:21Speaker 7: with a dragon flying over sick and then he skinned
- 1:10:24Speaker 7: it up and he said it was too bruised to eat,
- 1:10:27Speaker 7: so he wouldn't accept it. So that's my roadkill story.
- 1:10:31Speaker 2: I hit a dell last year driving home from a
- 1:10:35Speaker 2: hunt in South Dakota, and that thing had too much
- 1:10:39Speaker 2: trauma as well to take most of the meat, so
- 1:10:42Speaker 2: I took I had the backstraps that took the tender
- 1:10:44Speaker 2: loins and then like a roast on the backhand. But
- 1:10:48Speaker 2: otherwise it was just like, you know, pretty well ruined
- 1:10:52Speaker 2: that you wouldn't.
- 1:10:52Speaker 1: Want to be eating that.
- 1:10:53Speaker 2: A lot of trauma, a lot of blood seth and
- 1:10:55Speaker 2: he rode kill in your day.
- 1:10:58Speaker 3: M I don't think I've picked up a road killed deer.
- 1:11:02Speaker 3: I've picked up some roadkill fur bears and skin them.
- 1:11:07Speaker 2: That any different than one that was in your tramp?
- 1:11:10Speaker 3: No, just I mean, you know, try to avoid picking
- 1:11:14Speaker 3: something up that's sure full of trauma. But no, I
- 1:11:18Speaker 3: don't dream different.
- 1:11:19Speaker 2: Phil one more.
- 1:11:21Speaker 7: Okay, first, Phil, I've seen a few suggestions in the
- 1:11:24Speaker 7: chat that I've had. I've been over served today and

- 1:11:31Speaker 7: to drink yet.
- 1:11:31Speaker 2: He yet?
- 1:11:33Speaker 7: Yeah, yeah, I'm just full of the Christmas spirit.
- 1:11:37Speaker 5: Yeah, yeah, it's intoxicating. Santa. What was the mascot at
- 1:11:41Speaker 5: your high school?
- 1:11:42Speaker 7: The Warriors?
- 1:11:44Speaker 2: Oh?

- 1:11:47Speaker 2: Was it portrayed as like a Native American or well?
- 1:11:49Speaker 7: Yes, but they changed it. They changed it in recent
- 1:11:53Speaker 7: years to fit more of a spartan theme, with a
- 1:11:57Speaker 7: with a gladiator type helmet with a nose shield and
- 1:11:59Speaker 7: a sore, and people were very upset about it.
- 1:12:02Speaker 2: Sure, yes, yes, that's a good one.

- 1:12:17Speaker 2: Good question.
- 1:12:17Speaker 7: It's all about the questions for me. It's like playing golf.
- 1:12:21Speaker 7: You're really playing against yourself, trying to pick up a
- 1:12:24Speaker 7: stroke here and there on your opponent. But if the
- 1:12:26Speaker 7: course is shitty, there's not much you can do.

- 1:13:15Speaker 2: driving by a ranchers place. I had picked some apples
- 1:13:18Speaker 2: that day while I was hunting on the mountain, and
- 1:13:19Speaker 2: then they had some beautiful apple trees in their driveway.
- 1:13:22Speaker 2: I swung in and asked for permission to pick their apples,
- 1:13:25Speaker 2: and they let me. So that's the first time I've
- 1:13:27Speaker 2: ever gotten apple hunting permission. And now I turned into
- 1:13:30Speaker 2: that apple's right, all right? See you back here next week,
- 1:13:35Speaker 2: same time and place. By now
