- 0:00Speaker 1: It's time for the UConn Football Coaches Show. That means
- 0:03Speaker 1: Jason Candle, of course, a hit man with the Huskies.
- 0:05Speaker 1: I'm Mike Crispino, play-by-play voice. We get together every week
- 0:09Speaker 1: to recap what happened over the weekend and look ahead
- 0:12Speaker 1: at what's up for the Huskies. as they move towards
- 0:15Speaker 1: the middle of the season. They play Temple on the
- 0:18Speaker 1: road this week. That'll be the sixth game of the year.
- 0:20Speaker 1: That'll be halfway through the schedule already, and we welcome
- 0:23Speaker 1: Coach on board here. Jason, time flies quickly, doesn't it?
- 0:27Speaker 1: We're in October, and you're already thinking about playing your
- 0:30Speaker 1: sixth game here with UConn this season.
- 0:34Speaker 2: Yeah, it really has gone quickly. The days are long,
- 0:38Speaker 2: but the months are short in the football season. It
- 0:41Speaker 2: seems like you're It's Crown Hog Day. You repeat. You
- 0:46Speaker 2: do the same routine over and over and over again.
- 0:49Speaker 2: There's times and there's elements of it you feel like
- 0:51Speaker 2: you just started yesterday and there's other elements and times
- 0:54Speaker 2: you feel like you've been at it for over a year.
- 0:58Speaker 2: Unique time to make sure you keep your focus in
- 1:00Speaker 2: the right place. Big football game this weekend. Then we
- 1:03Speaker 2: get a chance to catch our breath on a bye
- 1:05Speaker 2: and really do some real deep dive into self-scout and
- 1:09Speaker 2: what we've been doing well and not well. Get some
- 1:12Speaker 2: recruiting done, but So got to take care of this
- 1:15Speaker 2: one first. Good Temple team, very physical team, very, you know,
- 1:18Speaker 2: well coached and a team that, you know, had a
- 1:21Speaker 2: great win Saturday. So we're going to be at our best.
- 1:23Speaker 1: Yeah, we'll talk about Temple a little bit later on.
- 1:25Speaker 1: I've talked to coaches over the years, many, many coaches,
- 1:28Speaker 1: different sports. And Dan Hurley has said this. Pat Riley
- 1:32Speaker 1: said this. Sometimes, you know, you win a game and
- 1:34Speaker 1: it's a relief. You lose a game and it feels
- 1:37Speaker 1: like death. but it's not really because you got another
- 1:40Speaker 1: one ahead and you got to kind of recap what
- 1:42Speaker 1: happened and kind of pick up the pieces. What's it
- 1:45Speaker 1: like for you on a week like what we just
- 1:48Speaker 1: saw in a great game? The other guy scored one
- 1:51Speaker 1: more point. I don't think anyone deserved to lose the game,
- 1:54Speaker 1: but somebody loses and somebody wins.
- 1:56Speaker 2: I don't handle losing very well. You know, and I
- 2:00Speaker 2: don't think I ever will. I haven't since I was,
- 2:02Speaker 2: you know, I never have and probably never will. But yeah,
- 2:06Speaker 2: I think that There's a global perspective on this where
- 2:09Speaker 2: you could pull so many really good things out of
- 2:11Speaker 2: that football game and really try to capture those moments
- 2:14Speaker 2: and build confidence from them and teach and grow from, and,
- 2:19Speaker 2: you know, really help your young football team. But there's
- 2:22Speaker 2: also a local thought process too, that you should have
- 2:24Speaker 2: won the football game. You had your opportunities to win
- 2:26Speaker 2: the game and it's our job to win the damn game. So,
- 2:30Speaker 2: you know, like that part of it can't go, you know,
- 2:33Speaker 2: by the wayside because even though I even though I
- 2:35Speaker 2: thought that there were some really good things to build
- 2:37Speaker 2: upon and some really tough things to have to fight through,
- 2:40Speaker 2: you know, I mean, we're down 20 points multiple times.
- 2:44Speaker 2: We have, you know, one of our really good players
- 2:47Speaker 2: carted off the field or an injury. I mean, there's
- 2:50Speaker 2: a lot of emotional ebbs and flows of a football game.
- 2:52Speaker 2: Then you throw that in there, too. You know, so
- 2:55Speaker 2: in a lot of ways, I was really proud of
- 2:57Speaker 2: our team's response. I think we responded very well to
- 3:00Speaker 2: some things against Miami of Ohio. Felt like at times
- 3:03Speaker 2: I was swimming in the middle of the ocean and
- 3:05Speaker 2: waiting for somebody to come save us at Miami. And,
- 3:08Speaker 2: you know, this game on Saturday, no matter what came
- 3:10Speaker 2: our way, I felt like we were swimming full speed
- 3:13Speaker 2: ahead towards the shore. And whatever came at us through
- 3:16Speaker 2: there didn't matter. So we can capture that and we
- 3:19Speaker 2: can handle that mentality. And, you know, there's great things
- 3:23Speaker 2: that lies ahead for this football team.
- 3:25Speaker 1: Yeah, Jason Candle with us, UConn football coach. This is
- 3:28Speaker 1: one of those games, coach, was, I mean, as a fan,
- 3:31Speaker 1: if you're coming to a game and you want entertainment,
- 3:33Speaker 1: you got it. I mean, over 1,000 yards by the offense,
- 3:37Speaker 1: only three punts, only three times the teams give it
- 3:40Speaker 1: up on downs, there were a couple interceptions, three missed
- 3:43Speaker 1: field goals, but 12 touchdowns by these two teams. I mean,
- 3:47Speaker 1: if you love offense, you had to love what you
- 3:49Speaker 1: saw on the field there on Saturday.
- 3:52Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean, I think that, you know, Speaking to,
- 3:56Speaker 2: you know, the success we had on offense, I think
- 3:58Speaker 2: our quarterback really did a nice job of, you know,
- 4:00Speaker 2: taking some tough moments and making routine plays in those
- 4:03Speaker 2: hard moments. You know, he's getting hit back there way
- 4:07Speaker 2: too much for my liking. You know, he's got to,
- 4:11Speaker 2: you know, get the ball out of his hands a
- 4:12Speaker 2: little sooner and quicker at some points in time in
- 4:14Speaker 2: the game. And then there's other times we just got
- 4:15Speaker 2: to do a better job protecting him. But I see
- 4:18Speaker 2: great growth from him and I see great growth from
- 4:20Speaker 2: the guys up front. So, You know, I think there's
- 4:22Speaker 2: a lot of moments there, especially offensively, that you can
- 4:26Speaker 2: build upon. Defensively, you know, we just can't give up
- 4:30Speaker 2: a fourth and 17 and a fourth and 23. I mean,
- 4:32Speaker 2: it's just inexcusable and can't happen. So, you know, last
- 4:35Speaker 2: week I thought, leaving after the football game, that if you,
- 4:37Speaker 2: you know, you hold the other team to 24 points,
- 4:39Speaker 2: you should win the game. And, you know, this week
- 4:41Speaker 2: I leave the field thinking if you score 40-plus points,
- 4:43Speaker 2: you should win the game, right? So, you know, hopefully
- 4:46Speaker 2: we put it all together this weekend.
- 4:48Speaker 1: Yeah, talking about Caleb Osborne, the quarterback, he's a young guy.
- 4:52Speaker 1: We mentioned it on the broadcast as well, five, six
- 4:54Speaker 1: games under his belt. He's learning on the job and
- 4:57Speaker 1: doing such a nice job overall. Getting rid of the
- 5:00Speaker 1: ball quicker, I guess, would be something you're thinking about.
- 5:04Speaker 1: You don't want him taking a beating back there. None
- 5:06Speaker 1: of us want to see that. We don't want to
- 5:08Speaker 1: see him going to the sideline because he's getting beat up.
- 5:11Speaker 1: So how does he take that next step in the
- 5:14Speaker 1: progression of being a great college quarterback?
- 5:17Speaker 2: Well, I think what we're asking him to do is
- 5:19Speaker 2: to be better post-snap. The only way to be better
- 5:21Speaker 2: post-snap is you're better pre-snap. And, you know, you have
- 5:24Speaker 2: to be able to see the picture. You have to
- 5:26Speaker 2: be able to process the picture. And then ultimately at
- 5:28Speaker 2: the end of the day, there's a level of anticipation
- 5:30Speaker 2: that has to happen when you play that position. So
- 5:33Speaker 2: he has it. It's just a matter of at-bats and,
- 5:36Speaker 2: you know, repetitions. And, you know, repetition is the mother
- 5:38Speaker 2: of all learning. I mean, there's no truer words ever
- 5:40Speaker 2: spoken than playing that position. So, you know, we've got
- 5:44Speaker 2: to force feed him reps in practice. We've got to
- 5:45Speaker 2: put him in tough situations continuously. And, you know, I'm
- 5:49Speaker 2: sure the other teams will figure out that, you know,
- 5:52Speaker 2: a different strategy each and every week to try to
- 5:54Speaker 2: stop them. And, you know, whatever that is, we've got
- 5:57Speaker 2: to identify it and figure it out, right? I mean,
- 5:59Speaker 2: Syracuse did a good job of putting a wide defensive
- 6:02Speaker 2: end to the field and really trying to limit the
- 6:03Speaker 2: field for him. And to his credit, he hung in
- 6:05Speaker 2: there and made some really good throws.
- 6:07Speaker 1: Yeah, third down conversions, just three for 11 for the Huskies,
- 6:10Speaker 1: Syracuse 10 of 17. How much of that third down–
- 6:15Speaker 1: inability I should say was it about third and long
- 6:19Speaker 1: third and short do you have to be better on
- 6:21Speaker 1: first and second down in these circumstances.
- 6:23Speaker 2: Yeah I mean I think that you know we haven't
- 6:25Speaker 2: been great in early downs on first down you know
- 6:29Speaker 2: all year we've been better much better on a third
- 6:31Speaker 2: down percentage but I the you know we're like a
- 6:34Speaker 2: third and average a third and six and a half
- 6:36Speaker 2: or third and seven which is you know a little
- 6:39Speaker 2: too high for my liking so I think that you
- 6:41Speaker 2: know the old saying, you don't go broke taking a profit.
- 6:45Speaker 2: You've got to value a check down once in a while.
- 6:46Speaker 2: You've got to be able to get the ball out
- 6:49Speaker 2: of your hand to a fast guy and let him
- 6:50Speaker 2: do what he needs to do. Like I said, I
- 6:53Speaker 2: think sometimes throughout the course of that football game, he
- 6:55Speaker 2: did that. Not all third and sevens are created equal.
- 6:59Speaker 2: Third and seven on your minus 20 is a little
- 7:00Speaker 2: different than third and seven on a plus 40. Plus 40,
- 7:03Speaker 2: your playbook's all the way open to you because you
- 7:04Speaker 2: could go for it on fourth and three or fourth
- 7:06Speaker 2: and two. You're not going to be too many times
- 7:08Speaker 2: where I'm punting from the 40-yard line. I think that
- 7:12Speaker 2: We've got to just continue to pound home the importance
- 7:16Speaker 2: of situational football and awareness. Like I said, defensively, too.
- 7:22Speaker 2: We've got to continue to put our kids in these
- 7:23Speaker 2: situations and continue to watch our team grow. All right.
- 7:27Speaker 1: That's Jason Candle with us. We'll be back in a moment.
- 7:29Speaker 1: We also visit with Sincere Bowers and Hayden Pegg later
- 7:33Speaker 1: in the show. We'll ask Coach about them. We continue
- 7:35Speaker 1: on the UConn Football Coaches Show in a moment on Learfields.
