- 0:00Speaker 1: Thank you for coming to my Ted Talk. It's one
- 0:02Speaker 1: more thing. I'm It's going to be a short podcast
- 0:10Speaker 1: today unless something pops into my head. But I wanted
- 0:12Speaker 1: to get this on because I've had this experience myself. Katie,
- 0:15Speaker 1: what are we about to hear?
- 0:16Speaker 2: We are listening to a cattle rancher who is standing
- 0:19Speaker 2: at his truck and his entire herd of cattle are
- 0:22Speaker 2: all facing him, and he is addressing the crowd.
- 0:26Speaker 3: I have good news and I have bad news. Bad
- 0:29Speaker 3: news is I will not be able to get the
- 0:32Speaker 3: well going to give you water. It's not an electrical problem,
- 0:37Speaker 3: it's an issue with the motor. Okay. The good news
- 0:40Speaker 3: is Michael's coming and he'll bring you water. Okay, So
- 0:44Speaker 3: you're not gonna die, You'll just be thirsty for a
- 0:48Speaker 3: while long, Okay. I'm sorry. Thank you for your continued support.
- 0:54Speaker 3: All Right, you have a great day.
- 0:56Speaker 1: Thank you for your continued support.
- 0:58Speaker 2: Have a great day.
- 0:59Speaker 1: So I don't even know if you know this about me, Katie,
- 1:01Speaker 1: that I used to work in feed lots for years.
- 1:03Speaker 1: I worked with cattle for years, tens and tens and
- 1:07Speaker 1: tens of thousands of cattle in pens and out and
- 1:11Speaker 1: fields and everything like that, and that is a thing
- 1:13Speaker 1: that cattle do. Sheep don't do it, Pigs don't do it,
- 1:17Speaker 1: Goats don't do it quite the same way. They will
- 1:20Speaker 1: butt you. But cattle, if you're like if you're out
- 1:22Speaker 1: in a field middle of nowhere by yourself and like
- 1:25Speaker 1: you're you're digging a post hole because you got to
- 1:27Speaker 1: replace a broken post on them like that, all the
- 1:30Speaker 1: cows will come over and stand there and just look
- 1:32Speaker 1: at you and just watch it. And they'll just stand
- 1:34Speaker 1: there right around you, like in a nice orderly circle
- 1:37Speaker 1: and watch you. And it's a common thing when you're
- 1:39Speaker 1: out there by yourself to address them, say hey, guys, how's.
- 1:41Speaker 2: It going, And they're just observing.
- 1:43Speaker 1: They're just observing, and it feels like you've got an audience.
- 1:45Speaker 1: And I know that other friends of mine because we'd
- 1:49Speaker 1: be out there working on us. Like then we'd start
- 1:51Speaker 1: talking about how you guys doing. Huh, that's my whole Like, look,
- 1:54Speaker 1: welcome to my ted talk. I want to talk to
- 1:56Speaker 1: you all today about why I like leve no, no, no,
- 2:00Speaker 1: hear me out. This is what I like about leather.
- 2:02Speaker 1: You know. We would start various conversations, make each other laughing.
- 2:06Speaker 2: I've said this a million times to family and friends.
- 2:09Speaker 2: I wish they didn't taste so good because they're so
- 2:11Speaker 2: stink and cute.
- 2:12Speaker 1: Man, ah they are. They're relatively nice too, Yeah they are.
- 2:18Speaker 1: They are unlikely to hurt you other than bulls.
- 2:21Speaker 2: My friend has a cow that has Down syndrome and
- 2:25Speaker 2: is blind in one eye, and its name is Jiggles,
- 2:27Speaker 2: and it's the sweetest cow ever, and it comes up
- 2:30Speaker 2: to you and just kind of what's its little head
- 2:32Speaker 2: sideways India and uh.
- 2:34Speaker 1: I love it. It made me want to be a
- 2:36Speaker 1: vegetarian and do Jiggles lives outside I assume.
- 2:39Speaker 2: Yeah, amongst the other cattle. But she's just she's not
- 2:43Speaker 2: you know, she just kind of does her own thing.
- 2:45Speaker 1: I don't want to turn something nice into something not nice.
- 2:49Speaker 1: But when I worked in the feed lots, and this
- 2:51Speaker 1: was many decades ago, gladys.
- 2:53Speaker 2: You're going to go there, I can feel it.
- 2:55Speaker 1: The cattle were not treated that well. And I was
- 2:59Speaker 1: very young and so I just did what everybody else did.
- 3:03Speaker 1: But it was looking back on it is a little rough,
- 3:06Speaker 1: a little rough.
- 3:07Speaker 2: H.
- 3:08Speaker 1: Yeah, the way cattle were sometimes treated. And I don't
- 3:13Speaker 1: even want to tell the stories or get into the specifics,
- 3:15Speaker 1: but it was grown up me would not be able
- 3:19Speaker 1: to participate or be around that, that behavior toward an
- 3:24Speaker 1: innocent animal.
- 3:25Speaker 2: And grown up me doesn't want to hear about it.
- 3:27Speaker 2: So I think we've come to an ice agreement.
- 3:29Speaker 1: Yeah, I don't think that goes on anymore.
- 3:33Speaker 2: I would I wouldn't think so, right, I mean times
- 3:35Speaker 2: have changed so much.
- 3:36Speaker 1: Yeah, well, even just for practical reasons, they stopped running them.
- 3:40Speaker 1: We used to run cattle everywhere, just because we're in
- 3:42Speaker 1: a hurry. Like you have giant area of pens, and
- 3:47Speaker 1: you've got a pen, maybe it's a quarter mile away,
- 3:50Speaker 1: and you got three hundred cattle you need to process.
- 3:52Speaker 1: That's what I spent most of my time doing processing cattle,
- 3:54Speaker 1: which is giving them all their shots and everything like that.
- 3:57Speaker 1: See A run them down these alleys and then you
- 4:00Speaker 1: run them into a pen, and then you feed them
- 4:02Speaker 1: through this process and they go through one at a
- 4:03Speaker 1: time where they go in this shoot and like I
- 4:05Speaker 1: would stand there and I'd have like ten different syringes.
- 4:07Speaker 1: Bam bam, bam, bam, bam bam. You give them all
- 4:09Speaker 1: their shots. You get a big clipper clip off their horns,
- 4:13Speaker 1: Blood squirts out and they walk off. It didn't seem
- 4:18Speaker 1: to hurt or anything, just but blood would scuirt out
- 4:19Speaker 1: like a fountain, like a monia, like a money python fountain.
- 4:22Speaker 1: It would just word out barbaric is right. Then you
- 4:26Speaker 1: put them, you dip them, so they would go into
- 4:28Speaker 1: a cage, and then he would be submerged in all
- 4:30Speaker 1: these chemicals.
- 4:31Speaker 2: He's still going, Michael, do you notice that how we
- 4:33Speaker 2: kind of got disagreement that he wasn't going to go through.
- 4:36Speaker 1: I'm not doing the bad stuff. This is just the
- 4:38Speaker 1: normal this is this is okay, this is just the
- 4:40Speaker 1: normal stuff. But they would submerge them in this liquid
- 4:43Speaker 1: and all the chemicals and stuff like that to get
- 4:45Speaker 1: ticks and fleas and whatever else off of them, that
- 4:47Speaker 1: sort of stuff. They didn't dig that too, because they
- 4:49Speaker 1: thought they were drowning. So they would evacuate themselves when
- 4:53Speaker 1: they were submerged. And then you lift them back up,
- 4:54Speaker 1: you open the gate, and then they run off because
- 4:56Speaker 1: they're scared to death. But anyway, we would run them
- 4:58Speaker 1: everywhere and then they just you know, that's actually you know,
- 5:02Speaker 1: running a steer in the heat for a quarter mile
- 5:06Speaker 1: is causing it to lose weight. We don't want them
- 5:08Speaker 1: to lose weight. We want them to be heavy, right,
- 5:11Speaker 1: because you make more money. And then they started walking them.
- 5:14Speaker 1: Oh interesting, that was more out of it saving money
- 5:16Speaker 1: rather than trying to be nicer. Wow. But when we
- 5:19Speaker 1: ran them, that's how I got stampeded the one time.
- 5:21Speaker 1: I've told that story too many times. I won't tell
- 5:23Speaker 1: that story again. But uh yeah I did that for
- 5:26Speaker 1: a very long time. Hmmm, that didn't turn me off meat.
- 5:31Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 5:31Speaker 2: See, that's the thing is, it's like I've been sent
- 5:33Speaker 2: those like meet your Meat videos. You remember that one
- 5:36Speaker 2: that went around. I think Peta made that crap years ago,
- 5:39Speaker 2: and I saw I can't watch I cannot watch that stuff.
- 5:42Speaker 2: I actually just told them I was like, if if
- 5:44Speaker 2: a dog dies in a movie, I'm not watching it.
- 5:45Speaker 2: If like an animal is getting tortured, I'm not watching it.
- 5:48Speaker 2: But I still I can't resist a nice bone in Ribbi.
- 5:54Speaker 1: I ran. I ran over a steer with a tractor
- 5:57Speaker 1: one time. That was completely an accident, completely an accident
- 6:00Speaker 1: in my fault, and it was that was pretty horrific,
- 6:02Speaker 1: And I can.
- 6:03Speaker 2: See did you not see it?
- 6:04Speaker 1: I still did this day. Don't know how it happened.
- 6:06Speaker 1: I was I was turning a corner and I don't
- 6:08Speaker 1: know if it walked up in between or I just
- 6:12Speaker 1: did I was daydreaming and didn't see it or whatever,
- 6:14Speaker 1: but I ran it over. Oh boy. Yeah. And then
- 6:18Speaker 1: and then it was gruesome to watch. But then I
- 6:21Speaker 1: had to go tell my boss and he was quite
- 6:25Speaker 1: unhappy because I was several thousand dollars I just destroyed.
- 6:30Speaker 1: And then you get a chain you put on the
- 6:32Speaker 1: back of your pickup, and then your wrapp a chain
- 6:34Speaker 1: around a hoof and you drag it down the gravel.
- 6:36Speaker 2: Rookie, all right, you know this took a turn. It
- 6:39Speaker 2: started with the really sweet video of a guy giving
- 6:42Speaker 2: his cows a nice talk. You're not going to be
- 6:43Speaker 2: thirsty for long, don't worry, Thank you for your attention,
- 6:47Speaker 2: have a nice day. And now it has moved into
- 6:50Speaker 2: this Mormon horrible play, moved into this.
- 6:54Speaker 1: Horrible place that I don't like. I don't like it.
- 6:58Speaker 2: Michael backed me up.
- 6:58Speaker 1: Please, this is this. This will be my final comment.
- 7:02Speaker 1: So then you put them in a pile, because lots
- 7:05Speaker 1: of cattle die because you hurt tens of thousands of cattle,
- 7:07Speaker 1: so they're dying regularly, so you have a pile. And
- 7:09Speaker 1: then they had something that they humorously called the used
- 7:12Speaker 1: cow truck that would come by once a week and
- 7:15Speaker 1: pick up the used cow truck and then you take
- 7:17Speaker 1: it to a rendering plant where they like boil it
- 7:19Speaker 1: down to make I don't know, folks chew leather or something.
- 7:23Speaker 2: I tried to stop him.
- 7:24Speaker 1: I did on.
- 7:29Speaker 2: National Cheeseburger Day. This is what you do.
- 7:32Speaker 1: Yeah, that's pretty sick. If I had remembered that, I
- 7:34Speaker 1: would have kept my mouth yet. I'm sorry you guys.
- 7:37Speaker 1: Ever seen Napoleon Dynamite. There is one scene where the
- 7:41Speaker 1: farmers yes, and the school bus goes by right at
- 7:44Speaker 1: that time. Yeah, it's a funny moment. Well, I guess
- 7:50Speaker 1: that's it.
