This Fourth of July weekend, Tucson Fire Department crews were stretched to their limits, responding to 177 calls — 95 of them fires, many sparked by illegal fireworks. With staffing shortages already a challenge, each fire call meant fewer resources for life-threatening emergencies. One brush fire even neared homes in a dry, high-risk zone — the same area hit by fire last year.
