- 0:01Speaker 1: Welcome to Not So Fast with Andrew Perloff and Paul Patz,
- 0:05Speaker 1: where two longtime friends challenge each other on the biggest
- 0:08Speaker 1: sports stories of the day. Here's Andrew Perloff and Paul Patz.
- 0:13Speaker 1: Not so fast, my friends.
- 0:17Speaker 2: Welcome to Not So Fast. I'm Andrew Perloff. He's Paul Paps.
- 0:20Speaker 2: And good news, America. My Super Bowl pick is back on, Paul.
- 0:23Speaker 2: The Rams beat the Giants.
- 0:25Speaker 3: Yeah, gutsy pick. You picking the Rams for the season.
- 0:27Speaker 3: Nobody really went there. You stuck with them after the
- 0:29Speaker 3: tough times in Australia.
- 0:31Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean, most people bailed. I'm still with them,
- 0:33Speaker 2: and they delivered last night, Paul. What do we got
- 0:35Speaker 2: coming up?
- 0:35Speaker 4: A lot coming up today.
- 0:36Speaker 3: We got warm takes on Jim Harbaugh and Baker Mayfield
- 0:39Speaker 3: and naming rights. Someone's very upset about that. But Monday
- 0:42Speaker 3: Night Football, I was excited going in. And then Jackson.
- 0:46Speaker 2: Dart got hurt. Yeah, well, listen, Jameis Winston came in.
- 0:50Speaker 2: Jameis Winston's had big moments in the NFL. Last night
- 0:52Speaker 2: was not one of them.
- 0:52Speaker 4: No, it was one of the worst.
- 0:54Speaker 2: The social media joke, is that World Cup correspondent Jameis
- 0:57Speaker 2: Winston playing football? He looked like he had not practiced
- 1:00Speaker 2: all summer. He played worse than I've ever seen him play.
- 1:03Speaker 2: I've seen Jameis Winston a lot. Guy's got arm talent.
- 1:06Speaker 2: Last night, his arm looked weak. He looked like he
- 1:08Speaker 2: didn't know where to go. It was all bad.
- 1:10Speaker 3: Yeah, that game set up, you know, there's Jackson Dart
- 1:12Speaker 3: hurt early, and it was not his fault. He just
- 1:14Speaker 3: stayed in the pocket and got kind of crunched with
- 1:16Speaker 3: a hyperextended knee. There was reports they tried to come
- 1:19Speaker 3: back in the game, but that took the air out
- 1:21Speaker 3: of the room because this felt like a night for
- 1:23Speaker 3: the Giants to make a national TV statement. John Harbaugh,
- 1:26Speaker 3: Cam Scadaboo, Malik Neighbors was healthy-ish for the game. And
- 1:30Speaker 3: once Dart goes down, it's like we're going uphill now.
- 1:33Speaker 3: And even though they got a couple turnovers, their defense
- 1:35Speaker 3: played well in the first half, Jameis Winston looked like
- 1:37Speaker 3: he forgot how to play the game.
- 1:38Speaker 2: Yeah, you and Dan were also talking about the Giants'
- 1:40Speaker 2: complete failure to cover Devontae Adams. At what point did
- 1:44Speaker 2: you think, uh-oh, this number one wide receiver on the
- 1:47Speaker 2: Rams because Pukunuku is out, Devontae Adams, future Hall of Famer, hey,
- 1:51Speaker 2: maybe we double-team him?
- 1:52Speaker 3: Yeah, it's actually an easy one. It looked like they
- 1:54Speaker 3: were on his fan club or something. They were trying
- 1:56Speaker 3: to keep away from him like two magnets. Pukunuku is out.
- 2:00Speaker 3: And they're like, I don't even know what this is.
- 2:02Speaker 3: You see these fade patterns are a battle between the
- 2:04Speaker 3: defensive back. They got lost in the uniform. But it's
- 2:06Speaker 3: also a reminder game about how good Devontae Adams is.
- 2:09Speaker 3: He was a fantastic player at Green Bay. Three-time first-team All-Pro.
- 2:14Speaker 3: He goes to Las Vegas and kind of his career
- 2:15Speaker 3: cools a bit. Now he's right back in the thick
- 2:17Speaker 3: of it.
- 2:17Speaker 2: Yeah, eight catches, 195 yards, two TDs. A lot of
- 2:21Speaker 2: the show, DP show, was about is he a Hall
- 2:23Speaker 2: of Famer. Dan said there's no debate. This is not
- 2:25Speaker 2: a question. I agree. Did anybody push back on that?
- 2:28Speaker 4: No, a little bit.
- 2:29Speaker 3: I mean, he seems like he had a little break
- 2:31Speaker 3: in his career, but now he's going full blast.
- 2:33Speaker 4: Let's get back to your Rams. You called them. Nobody
- 2:35Speaker 4: else did.
- 2:36Speaker 3: How do you feel about the Rams today? Is it
- 2:38Speaker 3: all good clean up on aisle five?
- 2:40Speaker 2: It's beyond all good because Aaron Arnold did not do
- 2:43Speaker 2: much on the statue. Don't get me wrong. He drew,
- 2:46Speaker 2: I saw a stat, 39% of the time he got
- 2:48Speaker 2: a double team. This is a guy who coming off
- 2:50Speaker 2: his couch, four out of every 10 snaps, they decided
- 2:53Speaker 2: to double team him, which meant the rest of the
- 2:54Speaker 2: line looked tremendous. And there was no Miles Garrett. So
- 2:58Speaker 2: can you imagine when Miles Garrett gets back in a
- 3:00Speaker 2: few weeks? This line is going to be probably the
- 3:03Speaker 2: best in the NFL, and that unit is good enough
- 3:06Speaker 2: to win games on its own. Forget the offense. I
- 3:08Speaker 2: think with Donald in the middle, once Myles Garrett gets back,
- 3:11Speaker 2: this defense is going to wreck games.
- 3:13Speaker 4: You know, I think the stat sheet doesn't do justice.
- 3:15Speaker 3: Like you said about Jalen Carter of the Eagles yesterday,
- 3:18Speaker 3: Aaron Donald looked fantastic last night. He was pushing into
- 3:20Speaker 3: the backfield right off the bat. If you get double teamed,
- 3:23Speaker 3: that's also a benefit for the entire defense. And without
- 3:26Speaker 3: Myles Garrett, think about when Myles Garrett's back in a month,
- 3:28Speaker 3: and Aaron Donald's much more into game speed.
- 3:31Speaker 4: It looks perfect.
- 3:32Speaker 3: Puka being out, not that big of a deal. The
- 3:34Speaker 3: running game was great. Matthew Stafford, no health issues. That
- 3:38Speaker 3: knee a couple years ago, the shoulder a couple years ago.
- 3:40Speaker 3: It doesn't look like there's any issues with the Rams.
- 3:42Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean, honestly, the only issue is that the
- 3:45Speaker 2: fact that the Niners also look amazing in the NFC West.
- 3:48Speaker 2: And the Seahawks. I'd say it's the biggest issue that
- 3:51Speaker 2: there's too much competition in the NFC. It's not going
- 3:53Speaker 2: to be the dream team scenario where they're going to
- 3:55Speaker 2: go 16-1 and just storm straight to the Super Bowl.
- 3:59Speaker 2: They're in for a battle, but they look good.
- 4:00Speaker 4: Do you get into that thing where it's good to
- 4:02Speaker 4: have a loss?
- 4:03Speaker 3: Early in the season, a couple people on social media
- 4:05Speaker 3: and a couple media people said, You know, the Rams
- 4:08Speaker 3: could go 17-0, which is the biggest topic you want
- 4:11Speaker 3: to avoid if you're that coach.
- 4:12Speaker 4: Now you don't have to deal with that anymore.
- 4:14Speaker 2: Well, it's the old Bill Belichick theory. I always thought
- 4:16Speaker 2: that around week three or four, Bill Belichick sort of
- 4:19Speaker 2: undercoached the team so he could work and yell at guys. No,
- 4:22Speaker 2: I don't buy that. I think that they honestly made
- 4:25Speaker 2: a mistake with Australia. I don't know if they win
- 4:27Speaker 2: that game anyway. You're seeing in San Francisco the team
- 4:29Speaker 2: they lost to, a fully constituted 49ers team with all
- 4:32Speaker 2: their stars healthy. I don't know how many games you're
- 4:34Speaker 2: going to see San Francisco like that. But now that
- 4:36Speaker 2: the Rams are coming back, and the other thing about
- 4:39Speaker 2: last night, the game would have been a lot closer
- 4:40Speaker 2: if Jackson Dart had been healthy. I don't think that
- 4:42Speaker 2: was a bad team they beat up on last night.
- 4:44Speaker 2: It's hard to tell. But I am confident. You know,
- 4:47Speaker 2: the Rams don't have a great home field advantage, but
- 4:49Speaker 2: they looked really comfortable last night. I am comfortable that
- 4:52Speaker 2: everything I thought about them preseason is true.
- 4:54Speaker 3: Okay, let's look at the Giants angle of this because
- 4:56Speaker 3: it felt like there was some hope. And with Jackson Dart,
- 4:59Speaker 3: we don't know how long he's out, but let's say
- 5:00Speaker 3: he's out for three weeks. Do you look at the
- 5:02Speaker 3: season as non-competitive, a ramp-up season, or could they get
- 5:06Speaker 3: it back?
- 5:07Speaker 4: If they were ever anywhere.
- 5:08Speaker 2: I'm really worried. And it's health. Because it wasn't just
- 5:11Speaker 2: Jackson Dart. Malik Nabors came in and out of the lineup.
- 5:13Speaker 2: Toward the end of the game, Brian Burns, their star
- 5:15Speaker 2: pass rusher, hurts his lower ankle. Low ankle screen ball.
- 5:19Speaker 4: Is that better than high ankle?
- 5:20Speaker 2: That's definitely better than high ankle. And then their left tackle,
- 5:26Speaker 2: Andrew Thomas, got hurt with a groin. That really concerns me.
- 5:29Speaker 2: Because the O-line has been a consistent problem for the Giants.
- 5:32Speaker 2: Thought they had it fixed this year. So I'm worried.
- 5:34Speaker 2: Is it going to be one of those years where
- 5:35Speaker 2: the Giants just get beat up and beat up some more?
- 5:38Speaker 2: You obviously need Dart back in four or five weeks,
- 5:41Speaker 2: but already my expectations are falling.
- 5:43Speaker 3: You know, I've been pretty critical of Dart. Here's their
- 5:44Speaker 3: schedule coming up. Titans, you could pull out a win. Cardinals,
- 5:47Speaker 3: you could pull out a win. Washington, the Saints, it's
- 5:50Speaker 3: actually a pretty friendly month. I don't know if they
- 5:53Speaker 3: can go into this month with Jameis Winston and think
- 5:55Speaker 3: this is going to be a good thing. I don't
- 5:57Speaker 3: think they'll go on the market at this point. But
- 5:59Speaker 3: without Jackson Dart, I've been critical of Jackson Dart because
- 6:02Speaker 3: of the way he took on contact last year. The
- 6:04Speaker 3: first two games, even though one game and five plays,
- 6:07Speaker 3: he didn't really do that. He got hurt, which is
- 6:09Speaker 3: kind of ironic, standing in the pocket.
- 6:11Speaker 2: Yeah, it's amazing. We've been talking a lot about the
- 6:13Speaker 2: concussions and the fact that he always gets in the
- 6:15Speaker 2: blue medical tent. I was glad that wasn't worse last night. Yeah. Scott,
- 6:20Speaker 2: our producer, said, thank God he was sort of jumping
- 6:22Speaker 2: up because if his foot was planted, he might have
- 6:24Speaker 2: tore his knee in half. He got the old Malachi crunch,
- 6:26Speaker 2: up high and up low.
- 6:27Speaker 4: Nice reference.
- 6:28Speaker 2: Yeah, I am worried about Jack Starr. I really like
- 6:31Speaker 2: him as a quarterback. I think I off-camera compared him
- 6:34Speaker 2: to Joe Burrow a little bit. I'm serious. He's top
- 6:37Speaker 2: 10 talent. He is that good, I think, because he
- 6:39Speaker 2: can move. He's got an accurate arm. I just don't
- 6:42Speaker 2: know if he's ever going to be healthy.
- 6:43Speaker 3: Well, I guess that's the one good thing about the
- 6:44Speaker 3: Giants is maybe this year does not work out, but
- 6:47Speaker 3: you have John Harbaugh, and it feels like you have
- 6:49Speaker 3: your quarterback. And the Cam Scadaboo thing, it's a cute
- 6:52Speaker 3: story and it's nice. He's a nice player, but it's
- 6:54Speaker 3: Malik Neighbors. His health is, it's a team effort with Dart.
- 6:57Speaker 2: Right. And Neighbors looked good in week one, obviously wasn't himself.
- 7:00Speaker 2: Are we going to do game stickers, Paul?
- 7:02Speaker 4: Let's do game stickers. You want to go first?
- 7:03Speaker 2: Yeah. Okay. I've been thinking a lot about this game sticker.
- 7:06Speaker 2: There's so many handouts. This is the Paps and Perloff
- 7:08Speaker 2: game stickers where You basically get a very ugly sticker.
- 7:11Speaker 4: Right on your helmet.
- 7:12Speaker 2: For a very pretty game. A lot of guys on
- 7:14Speaker 2: the Rams stood out, but I'm going to go to
- 7:15Speaker 2: tight end Terrence Ferguson. Second round pick in 2025. Okay.
- 7:19Speaker 2: Last night, caught a touchdown. The reason I was impressed,
- 7:23Speaker 2: he had two drops early in the game, Paul. And
- 7:25Speaker 2: the fact that Matthew Stafford kept coming back to him
- 7:28Speaker 2: and he delivered is a big deal. This is a
- 7:29Speaker 2: guy they had a lot of expectations for. And you
- 7:31Speaker 2: know the Rams love their tight ends. Yeah. Sean McVay
- 7:34Speaker 2: will go 12 personnel, 13 personnel, meaning two tight ends,
- 7:37Speaker 2: three tight ends. And Ferguson's a big part of what
- 7:39Speaker 2: they want to do, so he did not crumble after
- 7:41Speaker 2: a couple drops and had a big game.
- 7:43Speaker 3: And he doesn't get a lot of national attention because
- 7:45Speaker 3: everyone else soaks up all the attention.
- 7:46Speaker 4: Miles Garrett, Aaron Donald, you can go five down.
- 7:49Speaker 2: Oh, can you go even further now?
- 7:50Speaker 3: All right, here's my helmet sticker. For the first time
- 7:52Speaker 3: in show history, I'm bucking the trend and giving two
- 7:55Speaker 3: helmet stickers.
- 7:56Speaker 4: Scotty, permission? Permission granted.
- 7:57Speaker 3: Kyron Williams, the running back for the Rams, and Blake Corum,
- 8:00Speaker 3: the other running back for the Rams.
- 8:02Speaker 2: Notre Dame.
- 8:04Speaker 3: Two stud college running backs who are sharing time.
- 8:07Speaker 4: They each had 12 carries yesterday.
- 8:09Speaker 3: I love this tandem. These are two guys who can
- 8:11Speaker 3: catch the ball, run the ball. No one gets too
- 8:13Speaker 3: beat up. You don't spend too much on the running
- 8:15Speaker 3: back position, which I like that with the Rams. So
- 8:17Speaker 3: fiscal responsibility and good running game.
- 8:19Speaker 4: You know I love that.
- 8:20Speaker 2: Yeah, I don't know if we have enough stickers to
- 8:23Speaker 2: give it out to two guys, Paul.
- 8:24Speaker 4: I called the printing, and they're doing it.
- 8:26Speaker 2: Okay. You know what, though? It's a bit of a system,
- 8:29Speaker 2: you have to admit, because the defense is so terrified
- 8:31Speaker 2: of Stafford. That's why McVay keeps on hitting them with run, run, run, run.
- 8:35Speaker 2: It's a winning formula.
- 8:35Speaker 4: Oh, but I like that.
- 8:36Speaker 3: I like protecting your quarterback with the running game as
- 8:38Speaker 3: much as the offensive line. And they have two nice
- 8:40Speaker 3: running backs. They don't have a Saquon Barkley. They don't
- 8:42Speaker 3: have a Derrick Henry, but they're also not paying that
- 8:44Speaker 3: kind of money.
- 8:45Speaker 2: By the way, do you regret anything you said about
- 8:48Speaker 2: the Rams? Do you want to come clean after week
- 8:50Speaker 2: one in Australia? Did you give up on them at all?
- 8:52Speaker 3: I didn't give up on them, but I also said
- 8:53Speaker 3: that the dream team thing, 17-0, it's the worst call
- 8:57Speaker 3: in the world, and it worked out that way.
- 8:58Speaker 4: But no, the Rams are a lot of fun.
- 8:59Speaker 3: We'll talk about their uniforms in a little bit. All right,
- 9:02Speaker 3: what do we know after week two in the NFL?
- 9:04Speaker 3: Week two is in the books. I don't know where
- 9:05Speaker 3: those books are, but somewhere they're in the books. Week
- 9:08Speaker 3: two in the NFL, what do you know? What do
- 9:10Speaker 3: you feel great about, Pearl?
- 9:11Speaker 2: Okay, I feel great about saying the Cincinnati Bengals have
- 9:15Speaker 2: done a lot to fix their defense. We saw a
- 9:18Speaker 2: dominant performance against the Houston Texans. They had 27 pressures.
- 9:22Speaker 2: That's 43% of their dropbacks. They got a pressure on C.J.
- 9:26Speaker 2: Stroud and the Texans. So that changed the game, only
- 9:29Speaker 2: let up six points. Week one, they looked good as well.
- 9:32Speaker 2: This is a defense that doesn't have to be great.
- 9:34Speaker 2: It has to be okay. You have Joe Burrow and
- 9:36Speaker 2: Jamar Chase and T. Higgins, and they're more than okay.
- 9:39Speaker 2: I'm telling you right now, their D-line dominated the game
- 9:42Speaker 2: on Sunday. They have eight sacks through two games. This
- 9:44Speaker 2: could be a really big deal. I thought about Cincinnati
- 9:47Speaker 2: as a Super Bowl pick. It did cross my mind, Paul,
- 9:50Speaker 2: but now they have a defense, I think I should
- 9:52Speaker 2: have given more attention.
- 9:53Speaker 3: Well, I think that's such an underrated offseason acquisition. Everyone's
- 9:55Speaker 3: going to talk about Miles Garrett because he's a star.
- 9:58Speaker 3: Dexter Lawrence is is as good at what he does
- 10:01Speaker 3: as Miles Garrett is at what he does. But interior linemen,
- 10:04Speaker 3: as you brought again, your Jalen Carter take from yesterday,
- 10:07Speaker 3: they cause havoc, and they cause havoc on every play.
- 10:09Speaker 3: You don't need a sack with Dexter Lawrence. You just
- 10:11Speaker 3: need him to push up the middle. If the Bengals
- 10:14Speaker 3: could have a healthy wide receiver and a healthy quarterback,
- 10:17Speaker 3: and a B-level defense, they can go anywhere.
- 10:20Speaker 2: Absolutely. And, you know, a lot of people rip that trade. Remember,
- 10:22Speaker 2: everyone's like, ah, Dexter Lawrence didn't have a great year
- 10:24Speaker 2: last year. He's in his prime. Yeah, and also, you're
- 10:26Speaker 2: not going to draft a guy like Dexter Lawrence, so
- 10:28Speaker 2: a first-round pick might not mean that much.
- 10:30Speaker 3: Well, I think what the Bengals have seen in the past,
- 10:31Speaker 3: that they, you know, they bailed on Trey Hendrickson, and
- 10:34Speaker 3: they kind of didn't invest in their defense. They invested
- 10:36Speaker 3: in T. Higgins, invested in Jamar Chase, which you have
- 10:38Speaker 3: to do. But then, like, hey, just give them a
- 10:40Speaker 3: little to work with. All right, my what we know
- 10:42Speaker 3: after week two, I'm going to go with the Seahawks.
- 10:45Speaker 4: The Seahawks are all set.
- 10:47Speaker 3: I don't think there's any problems with the Seahawks, which
- 10:49Speaker 3: is weird to say when your star quarterback, and I
- 10:51Speaker 3: don't even use the word star, your Super Bowl winning
- 10:53Speaker 3: quarterback is not on the field.
- 10:55Speaker 4: They got JSN right there. No problem. That's a burn,
- 10:57Speaker 4: by the way.
- 10:58Speaker 3: They have a fantastic defense and they're not star laden.
- 11:01Speaker 3: They fixed their running back problem, which Darian Price. And
- 11:05Speaker 3: I don't think there's any problem. Drew Locke is just
- 11:07Speaker 3: cruising through teams. I think they're going to win 15 games.
- 11:10Speaker 2: No problem.
- 11:10Speaker 3: Whether they have Sam Darnold starting half of them or not.
- 11:13Speaker 3: I see them comfortably in the NFC title game. Because
- 11:16Speaker 3: the rest of the NFC is the Bears, the Lions,
- 11:19Speaker 3: the Packers, the Eagles. Except the Rams and the Niners,
- 11:22Speaker 3: someone's got to go. So I think that the 49ers,
- 11:25Speaker 3: I think that the Seahawks are on absolute cruise control
- 11:28Speaker 3: right now.
- 11:28Speaker 2: I think that's a big yada yada, Paul. What about
- 11:30Speaker 2: the Niners and the Rams?
- 11:33Speaker 4: Sustainability.
- 11:34Speaker 2: So you're guaranteeing NFC title game. To me, those three
- 11:37Speaker 2: teams are about equal. I worry the Niners are going
- 11:39Speaker 2: to get hurt. So then you get into a little
- 11:41Speaker 2: bit of who's healthier at the end of the year.
- 11:43Speaker 2: I think at 15 in that division, that means that
- 11:46Speaker 2: they beat the Rams and the Niners twice, not to
- 11:49Speaker 2: mention Arizona. Yeah, a couple there. Also, the Eagles, if
- 11:53Speaker 2: the Eagles get a run game going, who knows? I
- 11:55Speaker 2: think you're a little premature of that. We can come
- 11:58Speaker 2: back to this.
- 11:58Speaker 3: It's not the wildest pick in the world to say
- 12:00Speaker 3: the Seahawks are in good shape, though. I can't say
- 12:02Speaker 3: it's the hottest take of all time.
- 12:03Speaker 2: Yeah, but Sam Darnold is gone. It's a little hot.
- 12:06Speaker 2: It's warmish. We'll get into warm takes in a second, including...
- 12:10Speaker 2: Jim Harbaugh on the hot seat already?
- 12:12Speaker 3: Wow.
- 12:12Speaker 2: Paul might go there. We'll get into that next. Not
- 12:15Speaker 2: so fast.
- 12:23Speaker 5: Here's Riley Green with his 1663 OPS in the City
- 12:28Speaker 5: Connect jerseys. And when your OPS in any category is
- 12:33Speaker 5: the same as the year when the Austro-Turkish War started,
- 12:38Speaker 5: you're doing well. That's 1663. Thanks, Andrew. Ground ball back
- 12:54Speaker 5: to the mound. Her is handled out number one.
- 12:59Speaker 3: Back on Not So Fast with Pabst and Perloff. That's
- 13:02Speaker 3: Jason Benetti, the popular NBC Sports and the Detroit Tigers
- 13:06Speaker 3: play-by-play man. And a great job by the director and
- 13:08Speaker 3: camera person saying geek after he had that reference. A
- 13:11Speaker 3: reference you probably knew, Perloff.
- 13:13Speaker 2: Oh, of course I knew that. But it's funny. I
- 13:15Speaker 2: think because we're in the industry and we know how
- 13:16Speaker 2: this works, the brilliance of that move cannot be understated.
- 13:19Speaker 4: That was a very good move by the director. Benetti,
- 13:21Speaker 4: you're going to love that one. All right.
- 13:22Speaker 3: It's time for warm takes on Pabst and Perloff. And
- 13:24Speaker 3: I'm going to go first. Let's go to, here's one,
- 13:28Speaker 3: Jim Harbaugh. You know, it's not hot to say that
- 13:30Speaker 3: the Chargers are in a little bit of trouble.
- 13:31Speaker 4: You're 0-2.
- 13:32Speaker 3: You've got a big schedule coming up. And I start
- 13:34Speaker 3: playing it out. What if the Chargers just don't get
- 13:37Speaker 3: it together and they don't make the playoffs? We're in
- 13:39Speaker 3: year three with Jim Harbaugh. I don't think he's in
- 13:41Speaker 3: danger of being fired. I don't think they're going to
- 13:43Speaker 3: make that type of decision after year three. I think
- 13:45Speaker 3: they would trust Harbaugh because of his coaching background. But
- 13:48Speaker 3: for a moment I said, well, you know, if he
- 13:50Speaker 3: does get fired, that's okay because colleges would just line
- 13:53Speaker 3: up to bring Jim Harbaugh back.
- 13:55Speaker 4: And then I remembered. Show cause.
- 13:57Speaker 3: For those that don't know the phrase show cause, that
- 13:59Speaker 3: means you can't coach here anymore. Jim Harbaugh has two
- 14:02Speaker 3: show causes or cause I against him from the NCAA.
- 14:06Speaker 3: He's got a four-year show cause and then a 10-year
- 14:09Speaker 3: show cause.
- 14:10Speaker 4: And I tried to double check yesterday.
- 14:12Speaker 3: I think they put them together. Is that concurrently, Perloff?
- 14:14Speaker 3: Is that the word I'm looking for?
- 14:16Speaker 4: Concurrently. So Jim Harbaugh, as of now, there.
- 14:19Speaker 3: Is an appeal process with show cause, as always with
- 14:21Speaker 3: college football and the NCAA. But if Jim Harbaugh somehow
- 14:25Speaker 3: was no longer the head coach, his options are another
- 14:27Speaker 3: NFL team, the broadcast booth, which is saucy, but he
- 14:31Speaker 3: can't go back and coach college football until, like.
- 14:33Speaker 4: 2040 or something like that.
- 14:35Speaker 3: I actually, it is 2040 and that's pretty wild.
- 14:38Speaker 2: Well, he can't appeal it. I wonder if the authorities
- 14:41Speaker 2: in college football, whoever that is, I don't know who
- 14:43Speaker 2: that is. That could be you for all I know.
- 14:45Speaker 2: Can they suspend the show cause because Jim Harbaugh draws
- 14:48Speaker 2: a lot of ratings? Right.
- 14:49Speaker 3: I think that's a great thing. I was just about
- 14:51Speaker 3: to bring that up. For the good of the game,
- 14:53Speaker 3: I would un-show cause him if that's a phrase. Say, hey,
- 14:56Speaker 3: no harm, no foul. jump on the Florida State team
- 15:00Speaker 3: or whatever it is.
- 15:00Speaker 2: Well, I don't know how many years Kyle Whittingham wants
- 15:02Speaker 2: to coach at Michigan. If Michigan wants him back, they
- 15:05Speaker 2: have a lot of power in the sport.
- 15:06Speaker 4: Now you're over show-causing there. You can't go back to Michigan.
- 15:08Speaker 2: Oh, you can't go back to Michigan?
- 15:09Speaker 3: Yeah, you can't even go. I don't think you can
- 15:11Speaker 3: go back to the Big Ten. You have to be
- 15:12Speaker 3: in a tropical state or out west.
- 15:14Speaker 2: Go back to Stanford, maybe? Maybe. It's kind of a
- 15:17Speaker 2: waste of Jim Harbaugh. Stanford is not going to ever
- 15:19Speaker 2: be big ratings.
- 15:20Speaker 4: Maybe Clemson.
- 15:21Speaker 2: All right. For my warm take, let's talk about Matthew Stafford.
- 15:25Speaker 2: Pretty good quarterback. Last night, he passed Phillip Rivers for
- 15:29Speaker 2: six all-time in passing touchdowns. Now, if you've never seen
- 15:33Speaker 2: me do this take on Dan Patrick's show or anywhere
- 15:35Speaker 2: in my career, get ready for it. He is the
- 15:37Speaker 2: ultimate system QB in this sense, Paul. In this sense.
- 15:41Speaker 2: If he didn't leave Detroit, Matthew Stafford would not be
- 15:45Speaker 2: in the Hall of Fame. He would be Phillip Rivers,
- 15:48Speaker 2: a guy who has great stats but does not get
- 15:50Speaker 2: all the way. I think the fact that Matthew Stafford
- 15:53Speaker 2: left the Lions and got paired up with Sean McVay
- 15:56Speaker 2: is a major difference maker in his career, which proves
- 15:58Speaker 2: to me, Paul, being a quarterback is all about location, location, location.
- 16:03Speaker 2: If Tom Brady went to the Arizona Cardinals and not
- 16:06Speaker 2: the New England Patriots, then he is not the GOAT.
- 16:08Speaker 2: In fact, he's the other kind of GOAT. Matthew Stafford
- 16:11Speaker 2: is the ultimate proof that where you are drafted and
- 16:14Speaker 2: where you play makes all the difference. We've seen it
- 16:17Speaker 2: so many different times. Look at Sam Darner winning the
- 16:19Speaker 2: Super Bowl. If he had stayed with the Jets, newsflash,
- 16:22Speaker 2: he was not going to win the Super Bowl. Now
- 16:23Speaker 2: Stafford is running up the charts. He now only trails
- 16:27Speaker 2: Brady Brees, Peyton Manning, and Brett Favre on the all-time
- 16:30Speaker 2: touchdown list. He's up there in yards and all sorts
- 16:32Speaker 2: of stats. But I'm telling you right now, he only
- 16:34Speaker 2: had four winning seasons out of 12 in Detroit. If
- 16:38Speaker 2: he had not gotten to L.A., he would not be
- 16:39Speaker 2: a Hall of Famer.
- 16:40Speaker 3: So you're not saying he's a system quarterback as much
- 16:42Speaker 3: as you're saying the system he joined changed his career arc.
- 16:46Speaker 2: Hence, system quarterback. I use system quarterback liberally. Yes, it
- 16:50Speaker 2: means the same thing. You have to be in the
- 16:51Speaker 2: right spot.
- 16:52Speaker 3: But I think sometimes people think system quarterback is almost
- 16:54Speaker 3: like a notch above game manager, not his talents. His
- 16:58Speaker 3: talents were being misused or mis-surrounded in Detroit.
- 17:01Speaker 4: Is that fair?
- 17:02Speaker 2: Absolutely. I mean, you can see the talent. Nobody throws
- 17:05Speaker 2: a ball like Matthew Stafford. It's an absolute canon. So
- 17:08Speaker 2: I think everyone knew about the talent. I just think
- 17:10Speaker 2: that people were not into Matthew Stafford in Detroit. And
- 17:12Speaker 2: now legacy-wise, I think Orlovsky said he's top 10 all time.
- 17:16Speaker 3: And if you look at his career, it's kind of
- 17:17Speaker 3: the inverse of Russell Wilson's career. Matthew Stafford struggled for
- 17:21Speaker 3: a decade. Not struggled, but he didn't win a lot
- 17:23Speaker 3: for a decade in Detroit.
- 17:24Speaker 4: Great numbers.
- 17:25Speaker 3: And then he won, and he'll probably win another Super
- 17:27Speaker 3: Bowl if the odds are with him. Russell Wilson goes
- 17:29Speaker 3: to two and then his career kind of gets wonky
- 17:32Speaker 3: and he feels further from the Hall of Fame even
- 17:34Speaker 3: though I think Russell Wilson has nine Pro Bowls to
- 17:36Speaker 3: Matthew Stafford's two or three.
- 17:37Speaker 2: Yeah, and Matthew Stafford, by the way, does have only
- 17:39Speaker 2: a 92.3 passer rating. Not great. I mean, part of
- 17:43Speaker 2: the reason Detroit didn't win is he wasn't always perfect. Also,
- 17:46Speaker 2: he's had Calvin Johnson and Puka Nakua and Devontae Adams,
- 17:49Speaker 2: so he's had some health. But again, congratulations for Stafford.
- 17:52Speaker 2: We'll see if he gets up to the top three.
- 17:54Speaker 4: All right, for my next warm take, this one, I'm
- 17:56Speaker 4: really kind of upset about this, sports upset about this one.
- 17:59Speaker 3: The Detroit Tigers have a new name for their ballpark,
- 18:01Speaker 3: a new sponsor, a new name. It's now called Hold
- 18:04Speaker 3: on to your seats. Fifth Third Bank Ballpark or Fifth
- 18:08Speaker 3: Third Ballpark.
- 18:10Speaker 2: What?
- 18:11Speaker 4: Fifth Third Bank is the name of a bank. Fifth
- 18:13Speaker 4: Third Park.
- 18:16Speaker 2: I'm dizzy.
- 18:16Speaker 3: I just want to let you know I'm out. I'm
- 18:19Speaker 3: out on these naming rights. I'm out on calling things
- 18:21Speaker 3: what you tell me to call them.
- 18:22Speaker 4: Every few years.
- 18:23Speaker 3: I'll explain a little bit. The old name of the
- 18:26Speaker 3: Detroit Tigers ballpark was Comerica Park.
- 18:28Speaker 2: I mean, that's what we all grew up with, right?
- 18:30Speaker 3: We grew up, and I know that's also a corporate sponsor,
- 18:32Speaker 3: but Comerica sounds like America, which is easy to remember,
- 18:35Speaker 3: and we live here, and it sounds positive. Like, I'm
- 18:38Speaker 3: going to America Park. Yeah, that sounds awesome. I would
- 18:40Speaker 3: go to America Park and watch some baseball today.
- 18:43Speaker 4: But they got rid of it.
- 18:44Speaker 3: So I'm not going fifth, third bank at whatever field ballpark,
- 18:48Speaker 3: and I don't think Tigers fans should either. I call
- 18:51Speaker 3: the place where the White Sox play Sox Park or
- 18:53Speaker 3: Comiskey Park. It was like the rate or the guaranteed rate.
- 18:56Speaker 3: I don't care what it's called. The San Francisco Giants,
- 18:59Speaker 3: I still call it Candlestick, and they tore that thing down.
- 19:02Speaker 3: I can't keep up with the name changes there. In
- 19:05Speaker 3: the past 25 years, Candlestick Park has been, new building,
- 19:08Speaker 3: of course, Pac Bell Park, SBC Park, AT & T Park,
- 19:12Speaker 3: and now Oracle Park. That's too many. I can't give
- 19:15Speaker 3: you four in 20 years. I can't do it. I'm
- 19:17Speaker 3: going back to Candlestick, whatever you want to call it.
- 19:19Speaker 3: Giants Park, great. It's a beautiful place. We've been there.
- 19:22Speaker 4: It's fantastic.
- 19:23Speaker 3: The Atlanta Braves now play at Truist Field. I don't
- 19:27Speaker 3: even know what product that is. I haven't bought any
- 19:29Speaker 3: Truist because of this. I'm not doing it. I'm sticking
- 19:32Speaker 3: with Fulton County Stadium.
- 19:35Speaker 4: Which was like a generation ago.
- 19:37Speaker 2: That was like Bob Horner and Dale Murphy.
- 19:39Speaker 4: That's right. And we love Dale Murphy here on this show.
- 19:41Speaker 4: I'll make you a deal.
- 19:42Speaker 3: If you have a sponsor that lasts for nine and
- 19:45Speaker 3: a half years, I will pivot and call it with
- 19:47Speaker 3: a sponsor.
- 19:48Speaker 4: Like the Trop or the Braves. Astros play?
- 19:51Speaker 2: The Trop.
- 19:51Speaker 4: That sounds pretty cool. It's Tropicana Ballpark. But I can't
- 19:54Speaker 4: do this.
- 19:54Speaker 3: Fifth Third Park. I don't care if they offer me
- 19:56Speaker 3: free checking. I'm not calling it Fifth Third Bank Ballpark.
- 19:59Speaker 3: It's like Ruth's Chris Steakhouse. That's very confusing. We're sports people.
- 20:03Speaker 3: We're C students.
- 20:05Speaker 4: Just simplify it for us. Fifth Third Bank Tigers. I
- 20:09Speaker 4: can't do it.
- 20:09Speaker 2: What about a cheat code where you go Invesco Field
- 20:13Speaker 2: at Mile High?
- 20:14Speaker 4: That's more confusing.
- 20:15Speaker 2: So they try and cheat in the old name, but
- 20:16Speaker 2: they're using the corporate name. It's way wordy.
- 20:19Speaker 4: It's confusing. Mile High.
- 20:20Speaker 2: Okay.
- 20:20Speaker 3: There's only one other thing Mile High could be, either
- 20:22Speaker 3: a football field or you know what.
- 20:23Speaker 2: All right. That's a good one, Paul. I have to admit,
- 20:26Speaker 2: I totally agree with you, but I'm going to bring
- 20:27Speaker 2: back some real football analysis here. Let's get serious. The
- 20:31Speaker 2: Tampa Bay Buccaneers overpaid Baker Mayfield. $ 55 million a year
- 20:36Speaker 2: for an aging quarterback. And I actually said it. But
- 20:39Speaker 2: here's the problem with the Bucs. They are in the
- 20:40Speaker 2: division with the New Orleans Saints. And what are the
- 20:42Speaker 2: Saints paying Tyler Shuck, Paul? A lot.
- 20:45Speaker 4: Not at all. $ 2 million a year.
- 20:46Speaker 2: They're not paying him anything. So the key to winning
- 20:48Speaker 2: in the NFL is pay your quarterback nothing and build
- 20:50Speaker 2: talent around him. Not have an aging team and an
- 20:53Speaker 2: aging quarterback. And then you let your Hall of Fame
- 20:57Speaker 2: wide receiver, Mike Evans, go to San Francisco and Baker Mayfield,
- 21:00Speaker 2: when he was on the team with Evans, is 4-10
- 21:02Speaker 2: without Mike Evans on the field. And you have seen
- 21:05Speaker 2: him desperately miss him in the first two weeks. Had
- 21:08Speaker 2: big turnovers in week one, cost him the game, although
- 21:11Speaker 2: the defense was also bad. And then they lost to
- 21:13Speaker 2: the Cleveland Browns. If you're the Bucs, you are so
- 21:16Speaker 2: miserable right now. Guess what, Paul? The extension he signed
- 21:18Speaker 2: this summer doesn't kick in the next year. And it's
- 21:20Speaker 2: going to have salary cap ramifications. for the next three
- 21:23Speaker 2: or four years. So you've already put a rebuild, which
- 21:26Speaker 2: was necessary. You might not have wanted to admit it.
- 21:29Speaker 2: You put a rebuild on hold for three or four
- 21:32Speaker 2: years for Baker Mayfield. Now you're 0-2. You look bad.
- 21:35Speaker 2: You're struggling. This contract was a mistake. $ 55 million. Come on.
- 21:40Speaker 3: Well, I agree with your take on Baker Mayfield. I'm
- 21:42Speaker 3: going to take check you here and call it $ 20.
- 21:43Speaker 3: Are you saying, though, that when you have a great quarterback,
- 21:46Speaker 3: you don't pay them or just the mids? Like, for instance,
- 21:50Speaker 3: like the Bengals, when they had the contract with Joe Burrow,
- 21:53Speaker 3: you pay it and you gladly pay it?
- 21:54Speaker 2: Of course. There's no way around it. Burrow's 26.
- 21:59Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 21:59Speaker 2: Actually, 28. 28? Yeah, no, but Baker Mayfield and Joe
- 22:01Speaker 2: Burrow are not in the same situation. Of course you're
- 22:03Speaker 2: going to pay Joe Burrow. But you're talking about maybe
- 22:06Speaker 2: quarterbacks one through seven on the list. For most other quarterbacks,
- 22:09Speaker 2: by the way, Houston better be watching what's happening in
- 22:11Speaker 2: Tampa Bay because if they're going to give C.J. Stroud
- 22:13Speaker 2: $ 55 million a year— They better be sure that he
- 22:17Speaker 2: is the man.
- 22:17Speaker 3: Okay, before we break, there was some warm takes. There's
- 22:19Speaker 3: one topic that's been sticking in our craw a little bit.
- 22:21Speaker 3: Over the past two days, you saw Caleb Williams' injury,
- 22:24Speaker 3: you know, prayers for the injury, the hamstring injury. It
- 22:26Speaker 3: looked really bad during the Bears' loss to the Vikings.
- 22:29Speaker 3: But then, when it turns out it's just a grade
- 22:31Speaker 3: one hamstring, everyone on social media had a lot of
- 22:34Speaker 3: fun with it. And social media was like, oh my gosh,
- 22:36Speaker 3: is he going to be okay? And they kind of
- 22:38Speaker 3: goofed on the injury. But some real people, some former
- 22:40Speaker 3: players and some media people, called Caleb Williams soft.
- 22:43Speaker 6: Mm-hmm.
- 22:44Speaker 4: Where is the line for critiquing an injured athlete? Do
- 22:47Speaker 4: you have one?
- 22:49Speaker 2: Oh, you can't critique a real injury, but you can
- 22:52Speaker 2: critique a week-to-week hamstring guy. Yeah, he wasn't injured for real,
- 22:57Speaker 2: so you can critique him.
- 22:58Speaker 3: But I think some people on social media and even
- 23:01Speaker 3: real people that are on air in our industry were like, oh,
- 23:03Speaker 3: that is soft, a hamstring injury. I don't think that
- 23:06Speaker 3: kind of insinuates he was making up that scream or
- 23:09Speaker 3: making up the need for the cart or making up
- 23:11Speaker 3: those tears and was trying to be dramatic for attention.
- 23:14Speaker 2: Well, there's a bigger picture with Cal Williams.
- 23:16Speaker 4: Yes.
- 23:17Speaker 2: You know, you look at any feature on him. There
- 23:19Speaker 2: was a photo shoot before the season where he was
- 23:21Speaker 2: screwing around and making these silly poses. People have major
- 23:25Speaker 2: questions about his personality, and this adds to it. If
- 23:27Speaker 2: it was another quarterback, say Joe Burrow, who we were
- 23:30Speaker 2: just talking about, If he screamed and said, my hamstring hurts,
- 23:33Speaker 2: then we found out he's week to week, nobody would care.
- 23:36Speaker 3: But this is because of Caleb Williams. This is Caleb Williams'
- 23:38Speaker 3: specific criticism and poking.
- 23:40Speaker 2: Yeah, and maybe it's not fair. It's funny. People go
- 23:42Speaker 2: back and forth about the painted fingernails, about a USC
- 23:46Speaker 2: when he was hugging his mom. I personally like him.
- 23:49Speaker 2: I think he's a good quarterback. But it does sort
- 23:51Speaker 2: of fit the folklore of Caleb Williams that he's maybe
- 23:54Speaker 2: not the most serious quarterback.
- 23:55Speaker 4: Last thing before we wrap this.
- 23:57Speaker 3: What do you think about the difference between a media
- 23:59Speaker 3: person who's never played football before critiquing Caleb Williams' reaction
- 24:03Speaker 3: and a former player?
- 24:04Speaker 2: A former player is more important, obviously. Yeah, that's legit.
- 24:08Speaker 2: A media person. But here's the thing. I think a
- 24:10Speaker 2: lot of people are having fun.
- 24:10Speaker 4: That seems like trolling and baiting, though, if you're actually
- 24:12Speaker 4: calling himself.
- 24:13Speaker 2: Do you think Caleb Williams himself can have fun with
- 24:15Speaker 2: this and maybe come back at a press conference next
- 24:17Speaker 2: week and say, OK, yeah, that looked bad, but I'm back.
- 24:19Speaker 2: I'm fine. Have fun with it.
- 24:20Speaker 3: He's like in a body cast and rolls out and
- 24:22Speaker 3: just pops it off.
- 24:23Speaker 4: That would be a good move, Bears PR staff. All right,
- 24:25Speaker 4: coming up.
- 24:26Speaker 3: Nate Adkins covers the Rams for The Athletic. He was
- 24:29Speaker 3: there last night and tells us all what's going on
- 24:30Speaker 3: with Puka, Miles Garrett, and much, much more.
- 24:32Speaker 4: Stick around. This is Not So Fast.
- 24:35Speaker 7: We got the right people.
- 24:36Speaker 4: Yeah, I think, you know, sometimes you win, sometimes you learn.
- 24:41Speaker 3: And, you know, sometimes you have a dumbass coach that,
- 24:43Speaker 3: you know, makes travel plans that put you in a
- 24:45Speaker 3: bad spot.
- 24:46Speaker 7: There you go.
- 24:47Speaker 1: That's what I'm talking about.
- 24:49Speaker 2: Welcome back, Not So Fast, Perloff and Paps.
- 24:52Speaker 3: Sean McVay, easy to do after a win, right, Paul?
- 24:54Speaker 3: Very easy to do, but he put a bow on
- 24:56Speaker 3: that story forever. He blamed himself, said, hey, that's on me.
- 24:59Speaker 3: That was a fun one. Sometimes you win, sometimes you learn, Perloff.
- 25:02Speaker 3: That seems like an Ivy League shirt.
- 25:03Speaker 2: Yeah, I don't know. You felt a little loose there.
- 25:06Speaker 2: All right, we need to talk about the Rams in Australia.
- 25:08Speaker 2: Let's bring in senior writer of The Athletic, covers the Rams,
- 25:11Speaker 2: Nate Atkins. Nate, so all is good in Rams land?
- 25:14Speaker 2: We're all adjusted to the new time zone and we
- 25:16Speaker 2: don't have to worry about the Rams anymore? I guess so.
- 25:20Speaker 7: A little caught up on sleep after that trip to Australia.
- 25:23Speaker 7: Back to cracking jokes. Back to smiling at press conferences.
- 25:27Speaker 7: It was a strange week and a half, honestly, to
- 25:31Speaker 7: come back from Australia. These guys are just not used
- 25:34Speaker 7: to losing a game like that. I started on this
- 25:36Speaker 7: beat a year ago at this time, and I'd never
- 25:39Speaker 7: seen them lose by more than one score. They lost
- 25:41Speaker 7: by 20 there. I just had to eat the fact
- 25:45Speaker 7: that they came up with a unique travel plan and
- 25:47Speaker 7: it blew up in their face, but I think we
- 25:50Speaker 7: were finally able to at least put that part of
- 25:52Speaker 7: it to bed with Sean joking about the travel plans
- 25:55Speaker 7: being the reason and them getting back to looking like
- 25:58Speaker 7: the team that we thought they would look like this year.
- 26:00Speaker 3: Nate, let's get to Aaron Donald. He's been off for
- 26:03Speaker 3: a couple years. Clearly, he's let himself go. If you
- 26:05Speaker 3: saw him last night, my God, mixing a salad, my man.
- 26:09Speaker 3: The crowd went berserk when he came on the field.
- 26:11Speaker 3: I saw it in the pregame. He did not look
- 26:13Speaker 3: like he's missed much. What did you think of his
- 26:15Speaker 3: performance if you had to grade it out?
- 26:18Speaker 7: Yeah, I thought he was impressive. It didn't necessarily stuff
- 26:21Speaker 7: the box score. He didn't have a sack. He didn't
- 26:23Speaker 7: have a quarterback hit, but he did the thing that
- 26:25Speaker 7: he did for many years here, which is create for
- 26:27Speaker 7: so many other players. So many double teams came his way,
- 26:32Speaker 7: and you saw that just spring everything else open. The
- 26:35Speaker 7: Rams ended up having a pressure rate of almost 60%
- 26:38Speaker 7: for that game with eight quarterback hits, and I saw
- 26:41Speaker 7: Byron Young really teed off on the edge around Aaron
- 26:44Speaker 7: Thompson in those situations, one of them a third down
- 26:46Speaker 7: tackle for loss. So, you know, it was 32 snaps
- 26:50Speaker 7: last night, a little over half a game. I think
- 26:52Speaker 7: he's just going to continue to ramp that up. And
- 26:55Speaker 7: so I think you're encouraged about what he can do
- 26:57Speaker 7: in the interim without Myles Garrett. And then really once
- 27:00Speaker 7: they bring Myles Garrett back from injured reserve, I think
- 27:03Speaker 7: that's where it gets exciting because I saw a stat
- 27:06Speaker 7: on the NFL's next-gen stats that Aaron Donald was the
- 27:09Speaker 7: third fastest defensive tackle in the league this week. And
- 27:12Speaker 7: he's 35 years old.
- 27:13Speaker 8: Yeah.
- 27:15Speaker 7: How he manages to do this, I'll never figure out.
- 27:17Speaker 7: I just turned 35 a month ago. I cannot move
- 27:20Speaker 7: like that.
- 27:21Speaker 4: Oh, we thought you could.
- 27:22Speaker 3: We thought you might be able to, just so you
- 27:24Speaker 3: know we had your back.
- 27:26Speaker 2: You know, by the way, on offense, we have a
- 27:28Speaker 2: similar dynamic here, Nate. Did you know that Devontae Adams
- 27:30Speaker 2: had an 8-catch, 195-yard game in him at 33? I know.
- 27:37Speaker 7: Last night was just a night for the older guys.
- 27:40Speaker 7: You had Matthew Stafford moving up the list of career
- 27:43Speaker 7: passing touchdowns with four more scores. Yeah, I think that
- 27:47Speaker 7: was the cathartic release of last night. The big takeaway
- 27:51Speaker 7: I saw from a lot of people after week one
- 27:53Speaker 7: was that the Rams looked old and that adding a
- 27:56Speaker 7: 35-year-old Aaron Donald wasn't going to solve the fact that
- 27:59Speaker 7: they looked old and a step slow. And I think
- 28:02Speaker 7: last night was a reminder that, yeah, these guys are
- 28:04Speaker 7: a little older. than most of the stars of the league,
- 28:06Speaker 7: but they're still stars for a reason.
- 28:08Speaker 3: Nate, I want to go back to Myles Garrett because
- 28:10Speaker 3: it's a little confusing to me.
- 28:11Speaker 4: You work there every day and you cover the team.
- 28:13Speaker 3: Was that a Myles Garrett injury in preseason in the
- 28:16Speaker 3: game or was that like a car getting a checkup?
- 28:20Speaker 4: It's just been building for years. Any details on that?
- 28:23Speaker 7: That was an injury that popped up real early in
- 28:26Speaker 7: training camp. I want to say it was July 29th.
- 28:28Speaker 7: He was supposed to talk to us in a press
- 28:31Speaker 7: conference and then he went to a trainer's room and
- 28:33Speaker 7: then that lasted an hour and a half. The problem
- 28:35Speaker 7: is that I don't think the Rams or Miles saw
- 28:37Speaker 7: it at the time as anything that serious. Miles was
- 28:40Speaker 7: joking about, you know, I just get sore sometimes. I'm
- 28:43Speaker 7: an older player. The Rams don't play their starters in preseason.
- 28:47Speaker 7: They were still a month away. And so I think
- 28:49Speaker 7: they just thought, you know, this guy doesn't need preseason.
- 28:51Speaker 7: This doesn't seem like a real big injury. This just
- 28:55Speaker 7: seems like soreness that we can use maintenance on. The
- 28:58Speaker 7: problem is that because they don't play him in the preseason,
- 29:01Speaker 7: they never got to see him in a live football
- 29:03Speaker 7: setting before. until week one in Melbourne. And then you
- 29:06Speaker 7: add in the travel and trying to play that game
- 29:09Speaker 7: with no preseason. Every player was affected by that, Miles
- 29:12Speaker 7: that much more. And they realize that for as prolific
- 29:15Speaker 7: as he is, he's still human. And then he can't
- 29:19Speaker 7: play at the level that he wants to play at
- 29:21Speaker 7: with this knee injury. And so I do think in hindsight,
- 29:24Speaker 7: they would have, if they knew all that, done something
- 29:28Speaker 7: different in the preseason and maybe get him a surgery then.
- 29:31Speaker 7: But It just worked out that they didn't realize that
- 29:34Speaker 7: until week one.
- 29:34Speaker 2: All right, Nate, so we've seen two weeks in the
- 29:36Speaker 2: NFC West. You got to see the Niners up close
- 29:38Speaker 2: in Australia. What's your impression of where the Rams stand
- 29:42Speaker 2: in that division, in the NFC West?
- 29:45Speaker 7: Yeah, it's still the best division in football, and the
- 29:48Speaker 7: Seahawks are just adding to that, even though they lost
- 29:51Speaker 7: Sam Darnold, at least for the interim, but their defense
- 29:53Speaker 7: is so dominant that they're able to start 2-0. I
- 29:56Speaker 7: think the 49ers put a lot of concerns in to
- 29:59Speaker 7: rest about kind of their aging roster, at least to
- 30:03Speaker 7: start the year, have come out really, really strong, especially
- 30:06Speaker 7: on offense. And, you know, I think the Rams are
- 30:09Speaker 7: going to be right in that mix. You know, the
- 30:11Speaker 7: Rams have a few things they still have to prove
- 30:14Speaker 7: as far as can they keep these stars healthy with
- 30:16Speaker 7: Puka Nakua dealing with an injury, Myles Garrett on injured reserve,
- 30:20Speaker 7: and then Aaron Donald, Matthew Stafford, Devontae Adams are not
- 30:24Speaker 7: exactly young, so I think they have to prove that
- 30:26Speaker 7: they can keep this together, but I do think they
- 30:28Speaker 7: showed they have a much better floor, and they still
- 30:31Speaker 7: have some big-time superstar players last night, and so it's
- 30:34Speaker 7: going to be a battle because these teams at the
- 30:36Speaker 7: top of the NFC West have one of the toughest,
- 30:39Speaker 7: three of the toughest schedules in the league for facing
- 30:41Speaker 7: each other, and some of the divisions they pulled in
- 30:45Speaker 7: across the league, like the AFC West, so it's going
- 30:49Speaker 7: to be a big challenge. But I think the Rams,
- 30:52Speaker 7: they need to try everything they can this year, unlike
- 30:55Speaker 7: last year, to win this division, get home field advantage
- 30:58Speaker 7: because they travel the second most miles of any team
- 31:01Speaker 7: behind the 49ers. And for an older team, for them
- 31:04Speaker 7: and for the 49ers, getting a week off in the playoffs,
- 31:07Speaker 7: getting to play at home would be a big benefit.
- 31:10Speaker 2: Awesome. I think another headline is Nate Atkins is back
- 31:13Speaker 2: after the Australia trip. You look good, ready to go. readjust.
- 31:18Speaker 7: I was sick for a couple days after that, so
- 31:21Speaker 7: believe me, it hit me like a train, too. So
- 31:24Speaker 7: I understand a little bit of why the Rams played
- 31:26Speaker 7: the way they did.
- 31:26Speaker 4: All right.
- 31:27Speaker 2: Thank you, Nate. Talk to you soon. Wow. Thanks for
- 31:30Speaker 2: having me. It's amazing what one week, actually 10 days,
- 31:33Speaker 2: can do. It felt like the Rams-Australia trip is already
- 31:36Speaker 2: in a rear view mirror.
- 31:37Speaker 4: Yeah, and there was a lot of star power there
- 31:38Speaker 4: last night.
- 31:39Speaker 3: It feels like the Rams are not taking some of
- 31:41Speaker 3: the star power in the crowd from the Lakers or
- 31:43Speaker 3: even the Dodgers, but This feels like a super team,
- 31:45Speaker 3: and you saw some of those suites last night, and
- 31:47Speaker 3: LeBron was there.
- 31:48Speaker 2: Everybody was there. The one that had Russell Westbrook, the Gretzky's,
- 31:52Speaker 2: and somehow Pat McAfee, who was on his phone when
- 31:55Speaker 2: the camera went to him.
- 31:56Speaker 4: Let me ask you something.
- 31:57Speaker 3: Are there two Pat McAfees? Because he seems like he's
- 31:59Speaker 3: everywhere these days.
- 32:00Speaker 2: I have no idea.
- 32:01Speaker 3: Before we wrap it up, I have a question for you.
- 32:02Speaker 3: You don't know this is coming. A little surprise question
- 32:05Speaker 3: here on Not So Fast. Based off last night's game,
- 32:08Speaker 3: You can start your team, your franchise, with any current
- 32:11Speaker 3: Rams player. Knowing what you know about his career, you
- 32:14Speaker 3: get his whole career healthy. Among the candidates, Matthew Stafford,
- 32:17Speaker 3: Devontae Adams, Miles Garrett, Aaron Donald, Puka Nakua, Trent McDuffie.
- 32:23Speaker 4: You get their entire career healthy.
- 32:27Speaker 2: I go Matthew Stafford one because he's the quarterback.
- 32:31Speaker 4: So you're your default quarterback guy?
- 32:33Speaker 2: Of course. I mean, you want to be the quarterback
- 32:35Speaker 2: because the best player on that list is Aaron Donald.
- 32:37Speaker 4: And based off that, I'm taking him off the board.
- 32:39Speaker 4: That's a curveball. You can't do Aaron. No, I'm taking
- 32:42Speaker 4: Matthew Stafford.
- 32:42Speaker 2: It's Aaron Donald then. Aaron Donald is the historic player. Now,
- 32:46Speaker 2: I understand people think Miles Garrett might be the greatest
- 32:48Speaker 2: pass rusher of all time. Aaron Donald, because of what
- 32:50Speaker 2: he did in the Super Bowl, is one of the
- 32:53Speaker 2: top Five or six NFL defensive players of all time.
- 32:56Speaker 4: I'm with you.
- 32:56Speaker 3: I go Aaron Donald. Those guys are impossible to find.
- 32:58Speaker 3: And you get first ballot Hall of Famer for whatever
- 33:01Speaker 3: many years. No Devontae Adams, Puka Nakua, sure thing, wide receiver.
- 33:05Speaker 2: Well, you get to be on offense, so that's fun.
- 33:07Speaker 2: But Puka Nakua has already hit a lot of speed
- 33:08Speaker 2: bumps in his career on and off the field, so
- 33:10Speaker 2: I wouldn't pick Puka. You know what? How about if
- 33:13Speaker 2: I give you a head coach, Sean McVay?
- 33:15Speaker 4: Oh, head coach over player?
- 33:16Speaker 2: I mean, Sean McVay is in his 30s and already
- 33:19Speaker 2: has a Super Bowl and is featured on 60 Minutes
- 33:21Speaker 2: the other day.
- 33:21Speaker 4: That's a good call. You threw it right back at me.
- 33:23Speaker 2: All right. Florida is favored over Ole Miss this weekend,
- 33:27Speaker 2: but should they be? We'll hear from Florida head coach
- 33:30Speaker 2: John Summerall on the ClipJoy. That's next. Not so fast.
- 33:37Speaker 2: Devontae Adams, Hall of Famer.
- 33:40Speaker 4: Oh, yeah, absolutely.
- 33:42Speaker 2: Absolutely.
- 33:43Speaker 6: When you go to three different teams and you lead
- 33:46Speaker 6: the league three different times in touchdowns on three different teams,
- 33:52Speaker 6: it takes me And he is. He's at a different place.
- 33:56Speaker 9: I put him as a Hall of Famer, but I
- 34:01Speaker 9: liken him to a guy like Andre Johnson. See, he's
- 34:06Speaker 9: gone to three different teams, but he's been blessed with
- 34:09Speaker 9: some very good quarterbacks.
- 34:12Speaker 6: But he's certainly a first ballot Hall of Famer for me.
- 34:15Speaker 8: First ballot Hall of Famer.
- 34:18Speaker 3: Back on Not So Fast, Paps and Perloff, that was
- 34:20Speaker 3: Michael Irvin, the playmaker earlier on the Dan Patrick Show
- 34:23Speaker 3: with DP, and he had no doubt about Devontae Adams.
- 34:26Speaker 3: I will say, though, one lesson about Devontae Adams, never
- 34:29Speaker 3: leave your quarterback. When he was in Green Bay, that
- 34:32Speaker 3: guy was cruising. His last three years in Green Bay,
- 34:35Speaker 3: he was first-team All-Pro. I think he led the league
- 34:37Speaker 3: in touchdown receptions a couple times. He wanted a new start.
- 34:42Speaker 3: He wanted to go to Las Vegas. I think he
- 34:43Speaker 3: played out there.
- 34:44Speaker 2: Also, he went to college with Derek Carr. They were
- 34:47Speaker 2: good friends.
- 34:48Speaker 3: I have a lot of friends from college I'd like
- 34:49Speaker 3: to hang out with, but I'm not leaving Aaron Rodgers
- 34:51Speaker 3: in my prime, Aaron Rodgers' prime, to go to Derek Carr,
- 34:54Speaker 3: who's a very nice quarterback, and had one great year together.
- 34:58Speaker 3: I thought that Devontae Adams was costing himself the Hall
- 35:02Speaker 3: of Fame when he went to the Raiders.
- 35:03Speaker 2: Yeah, I had the same thought, but... Lifestyle-wise, if you
- 35:06Speaker 2: saw there was a documentary on Netflix about wide receivers,
- 35:09Speaker 2: his house was a lot nicer in Vegas. I'm going
- 35:10Speaker 2: to tell you right now, his wife looked a lot
- 35:12Speaker 2: happier losing games in Vegas than winning games in Green Bay.
- 35:15Speaker 3: Are we doing the game, would you rather live in
- 35:17Speaker 3: Green Bay, Wisconsin, or Las Vegas, Nevada? Because we haven't
- 35:19Speaker 3: done that one in a while. Just so you know,
- 35:21Speaker 3: and I'm not being pandering, I would live in Green
- 35:23Speaker 3: Bay any day over Vegas.
- 35:25Speaker 2: Well, I mean, Devontae Adams, one thing, he has a
- 35:27Speaker 2: Taco Bell in his house, if you recall. That's true.
- 35:28Speaker 2: So that's a little different.
- 35:29Speaker 4: That's not just a spot. That's true.
- 35:31Speaker 2: No, he absolutely has, and there's a guy back there.
- 35:34Speaker 2: But Irvin nailed it, though. It doesn't matter. For Devontae Adams,
- 35:37Speaker 2: he made up for it because he got with Stafford later. Oh, yeah.
- 35:40Speaker 2: And I got to be honest, we're not talking about enough.
- 35:42Speaker 2: I'm shocked how good he was last night. It looked
- 35:44Speaker 2: like nothing had diminished even though he's 33.
- 35:46Speaker 3: A lot of people thought it was like Puka and
- 35:49Speaker 3: he was the B guy. And he's still a very
- 35:50Speaker 3: good B guy, but I don't think anyone saw that coming.
- 35:52Speaker 2: Yeah, and who do you trust more talking about wide receivers,
- 35:54Speaker 2: Michael Irvin or us?
- 35:56Speaker 4: I think that's still up for debate. All right, coming
- 35:58Speaker 4: up next. Oh, this is very cool. Saints quarterback Tyler
- 36:01Speaker 4: Shuck was on the show. This is fantastic.
- 36:03Speaker 3: He's a great Saints quarterback. It's his first time on
- 36:05Speaker 3: the Dan Patrick Show. And he talked about his childhood
- 36:08Speaker 3: crush growing up at the quarterback position.
- 36:10Speaker 4: Here's how that went.
- 36:11Speaker 8: I'd say Matthew Stafford. Yeah, I would say Stafford was
- 36:15Speaker 8: kind of one of my favorites. My dad being from Michigan,
- 36:18Speaker 8: kind of watching him, his arm talent, his different angles,
- 36:21Speaker 8: his toughness, being able to kind of play against him earlier,
- 36:25Speaker 8: you know, last year, and then being able to kind
- 36:26Speaker 8: of talk to him a couple times has been really
- 36:28Speaker 8: cool to be able to do so far.
- 36:31Speaker 2: Have you met him?
- 36:33Speaker 8: Yeah, yeah, I got to talk to him a couple
- 36:35Speaker 8: times at the the NFL honors award show, and then, um,
- 36:38Speaker 8: you know, joint practices this, this year. Um, so it's, um,
- 36:42Speaker 8: it's really cool being able to kind of learn, uh,
- 36:44Speaker 8: from him, you know, he's got some, so many years
- 36:46Speaker 8: of experience and, and, uh, you know, the level that
- 36:49Speaker 8: he's playing at, it's really encouraging, especially, um, just kind
- 36:53Speaker 8: of considering where he's at in his career as well.
- 36:56Speaker 2: You know, it's interesting. Dan mentioned after that clip that
- 36:59Speaker 2: a lot of people he talks to, young quarterbacks, worship
- 37:02Speaker 2: Matthew Stafford. I get it. There's nobody who throws a
- 37:05Speaker 2: prettier pass.
- 37:06Speaker 3: Yeah, it's the window of time because you go, Stafford
- 37:08Speaker 3: in college was a star. Big arm, number one draft pick.
- 37:11Speaker 3: And even though it didn't work out so well, he
- 37:13Speaker 3: still put up a lot of numbers in Detroit.
- 37:15Speaker 2: Yeah, and if you're a quarterback, I don't think you
- 37:16Speaker 2: care as much about who wins a game, who has
- 37:18Speaker 2: a better highlight. And I'll be honest, I'm not going
- 37:20Speaker 2: to call out youngsters, and Tyler Shuck's not even that young.
- 37:22Speaker 2: Some of them just watch highlights, and they, you know,
- 37:25Speaker 2: I have a nephew who's 13, shout out Parker. He
- 37:28Speaker 2: only watches five minutes of highlights. So if you look
- 37:30Speaker 2: at a Matthew Stafford highlight reel, it's spectacular. They don't
- 37:33Speaker 2: care if the Detroit won or lost.
- 37:34Speaker 3: You talked earlier about spending money on quarterbacks. Right now,
- 37:37Speaker 3: Tyler Shuck is making $ 2 million. $ 2 million next year,
- 37:40Speaker 3: $ 3 million the.
- 37:41Speaker 4: Year after that.
- 37:42Speaker 3: If he plays well, you're forced to pay him the
- 37:45Speaker 3: $ 300 million five- to six-year contract. But the first half
- 37:48Speaker 3: of his career, you basically got for free as far
- 37:51Speaker 3: as a quarterback is concerned.
- 37:52Speaker 2: Oh, the Saints have to go for it right now
- 37:53Speaker 2: because he's good enough to go to a high level
- 37:55Speaker 2: if he's got a great team around him.
- 37:56Speaker 4: And that division.
- 37:57Speaker 2: Also, what was the story? His dad was wearing a
- 37:59Speaker 2: DP Show t-shirt?
- 38:00Speaker 3: Yeah, so we made a shirt last year. Dan Patrick's
- 38:03Speaker 3: show made a shirt called.
- 38:06Speaker 2: Shuck around.
- 38:07Speaker 4: Shuck around and find out.
- 38:08Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 38:08Speaker 4: His dad bought one.
- 38:09Speaker 3: I don't think we gave it to him for free,
- 38:11Speaker 3: and he had a picture with a DP show fan
- 38:13Speaker 3: after our Saints game.
- 38:14Speaker 2: I know. That was funny. Tyler answered that. He seemed
- 38:16Speaker 2: like a good dude. All right. Talking about a guy
- 38:19Speaker 2: on a high right now. Okay. Ole Miss are underdogs
- 38:22Speaker 2: to Florida this week, and Florida coach John Summerall tried
- 38:26Speaker 2: to sort of dampen the reaction. Here's Summerall.
- 38:29Speaker 10: Who's got his favorite against these guys?
- 38:33Speaker 2: Do they?
- 38:34Speaker 10: There's a lot of good drugs out there, huh? I mean, yeah.
- 38:41Speaker 10: I did talk to our team about rankings in week
- 38:43Speaker 10: four mean nothing. Nobody posts anything up in the building
- 38:50Speaker 10: about this year's team where you're ranked in week four.
- 38:53Speaker 10: Nobody cares. And the same pats in the back you're getting,
- 38:57Speaker 10: if you go out and lay an egg, you're going
- 38:58Speaker 10: to be the same hands hitting you in the back
- 39:01Speaker 10: and there's going to be a knife in it.
- 39:02Speaker 4: There's a lot to chop up here.
- 39:04Speaker 3: John Summerall, the former Tulane coach, is really rolling in Florida.
- 39:07Speaker 3: It's September, but he's rolling. And Florida fans, you've been
- 39:10Speaker 3: wanting to roll for a while now.
- 39:11Speaker 4: A couple things.
- 39:12Speaker 3: I was surprised as well that Ole Miss is not
- 39:15Speaker 3: favored in that game. It's almost like Vegas is saying
- 39:17Speaker 3: they shot their shot last week, and this will be
- 39:19Speaker 3: a letdown game. Also, John Summerall doesn't blink. I watched
- 39:22Speaker 3: that video. I counted no blinks in the entire video.
- 39:24Speaker 2: Oh, yeah.
- 39:25Speaker 4: He's too busy coaching to blink.
- 39:26Speaker 2: So an interesting debate about John Summerall. Is that performative?
- 39:29Speaker 2: Is he playing the role of a college football coach
- 39:31Speaker 2: because he wants to fire up the team, wants to
- 39:33Speaker 2: be good on camera because he's one of those guys
- 39:35Speaker 2: who's we're clipping him every week.
- 39:37Speaker 3: Well, I think some of these guys are like that.
- 39:39Speaker 3: I think he's being an enhanced version of himself. He's
- 39:42Speaker 3: trying to sell a program and brand himself. He was
- 39:44Speaker 3: at Tulane, not a household name. If he wins and
- 39:47Speaker 3: is a character, we'll buy into him. We're buying into
- 39:49Speaker 3: him today on the show. It's like Mike McDaniel. When
- 39:52Speaker 3: he was the offensive coordinator out in San Francisco, he
- 39:55Speaker 3: would do interviews.
- 39:55Speaker 4: He was a character.
- 39:56Speaker 3: Then he goes down to the Miami Dolphins. I think
- 39:58Speaker 3: he's an accentuated version of himself.
- 40:00Speaker 2: Yeah, I got to tell you, I agree with Summerall.
- 40:02Speaker 2: The rankings now are totally useless. Even Ole Miss, you
- 40:05Speaker 2: saw in the second half, they totally fell apart against Louisville,
- 40:07Speaker 2: and then they fell apart against LSU in the second half.
- 40:10Speaker 2: I have questions about that team. I have questions about
- 40:12Speaker 2: the whole SEC, but I think a lot of people
- 40:14Speaker 2: are anointing Ole Miss. I think Summerall knows, hey, we
- 40:18Speaker 2: have an opportunity to really make a splash here.
- 40:20Speaker 4: It really will be. It'll be a national stage for him.
- 40:22Speaker 4: It's going to be a great weekend.
- 40:23Speaker 3: We have something we do every week on this show.
- 40:25Speaker 3: When I say every week, this is week two. It's
- 40:27Speaker 3: called the College Football Play of the Season, and it's
- 40:30Speaker 3: kind of a King of the Hill type thing. What
- 40:32Speaker 3: was the best one last week? What was the best
- 40:34Speaker 3: one this week? And can it be toppled? Let's start
- 40:36Speaker 3: with week one was Drew Mestermaker, the quarterback of Oklahoma State,
- 40:41Speaker 3: doing the old John Elway spin.
- 40:42Speaker 4: This was great. Big win for Oklahoma State.
- 40:45Speaker 3: Glorious in the air. Slow motion and fast. That is
- 40:50Speaker 3: tough to top. And they won the game, which is
- 40:52Speaker 3: a big kicker, right, Pearl?
- 40:53Speaker 2: Yeah, Drew Mestermaker made himself a likely top 10 pick
- 40:56Speaker 2: in the NFL draft for that game.
- 40:57Speaker 3: Now, my concern for Mr. Mestermaker, which is hard to say,
- 41:00Speaker 3: is that may be one week only. Because NC State,
- 41:03Speaker 3: the fumble, and the Vandy walk-off is.
- 41:08Speaker 4: Unbelievable.
- 41:09Speaker 3: It still looks like one of those things you made
- 41:10Speaker 3: up in a TV show or a movie about football
- 41:13Speaker 3: that can't actually happen.
- 41:14Speaker 2: I know. But we don't know, I mean... we might know,
- 41:17Speaker 2: the names of the players involved.
- 41:19Speaker 4: I don't think we know their names.
- 41:20Speaker 3: It's just the bandy game? The fumble, the non-safety, the blooper.
- 41:26Speaker 4: I don't know what this play is called, but It.
- 41:28Speaker 2: Could also be called the worst play of the year.
- 41:31Speaker 2: Can it be the best play and the worst play simultaneously?
- 41:33Speaker 4: But here's the thing.
- 41:34Speaker 3: I checked my notes. It's the college football play of
- 41:36Speaker 3: the season. Does it have to be inherently positive?
- 41:39Speaker 2: Well, actually, all positive plays are negative for somebody. So
- 41:43Speaker 2: I think it wins, Paul. I think Vanity is at
- 41:45Speaker 2: the top of the heap.
- 41:46Speaker 4: I'm with you.
- 41:46Speaker 3: I just want to be able to watch this every week.
- 41:48Speaker 3: And Scotty says that if we give them the win,
- 41:50Speaker 3: we get to see it every week. So NC State...
- 41:53Speaker 3: Immortality stays with you. You are now the college football
- 41:56Speaker 3: play of the week on Not So Fast.
- 41:57Speaker 2: Wow. It was tough enough to lose the game. Now
- 42:00Speaker 2: NC State has to deal with it.
- 42:01Speaker 4: Yeah, you thought you may not.
- 42:02Speaker 3: Sorry, Drew Mestermaker. We'll keep an eye on what's going
- 42:04Speaker 3: on with you. All right, coming up next, we have
- 42:06Speaker 3: constructive criticism. that feel good, and much, much more. A
- 42:09Speaker 3: little more Rams talk as well.
- 42:10Speaker 4: Stick around. This is Not So Fast.
- 42:12Speaker 2: All right, welcome back. Not So Fast, Paps and Perloff,
- 42:15Speaker 2: NBC Sports Now and Peacock. So every week we're going
- 42:18Speaker 2: to do the college football play of the season, and
- 42:20Speaker 2: now we're going to do the NFL play of the season,
- 42:23Speaker 2: sort of a king of the mountain thing. Last week
- 42:25Speaker 2: it was T.J. Watt, Paul.
- 42:27Speaker 4: That great interception.
- 42:28Speaker 2: Yes, great interception against Atlanta. I believe this was his
- 42:32Speaker 2: first touchdown in his career.
- 42:35Speaker 3: Does this seem less impressive now because of the Atlanta
- 42:37Speaker 3: quarterback play?
- 42:40Speaker 2: Yeah, absolutely.
- 42:42Speaker 4: No, sorry, TJ.
- 42:43Speaker 2: TJ probably had a better play week, too. No, this
- 42:45Speaker 2: week we have some strong competition, though, Paul. This play
- 42:49Speaker 2: you talked about on yesterday is not so fast.
- 42:51Speaker 4: Jamar Chase.
- 42:52Speaker 2: Jamar Chase. I mean, sorry, TJ, but I don't know
- 42:56Speaker 2: how you can't make this Jamar Chase catch against the Texans.
- 42:58Speaker 3: Now, speaking for TJ, he's supposed to make catches like this.
- 43:02Speaker 3: TJ Watt's not supposed to make catches like this.
- 43:04Speaker 2: Nobody is supposed to be able to turn like that
- 43:07Speaker 2: with the best cornerback in the league, arguably, and Derek
- 43:10Speaker 2: Stigley on you and pinpoint the ball and keep your
- 43:13Speaker 2: feet inbounds. Pretty incredible.
- 43:15Speaker 4: Okay, let's look at this play. TJ Watt versus Jamar Chase.
- 43:18Speaker 1: Jamar Chase.
- 43:19Speaker 3: I'm going to go with Jamar Chase because almost slowing
- 43:22Speaker 3: that down takes away from it. When you look at it,
- 43:25Speaker 3: there's a certain point where the ball is here. And
- 43:27Speaker 3: he's here, and he twists his body. It does not
- 43:29Speaker 3: look physically possible.
- 43:30Speaker 2: No, that's so hard to do, to track the ball
- 43:32Speaker 2: and keep your balance. And, again, he got his feet
- 43:34Speaker 2: in balance. I don't know how he did it. I
- 43:36Speaker 2: have a feeling Jamar Chase himself will challenge us because
- 43:38Speaker 2: he makes a.
- 43:39Speaker 4: Lot of spectacular— Can he beat himself is what you're asking.
- 43:41Speaker 2: All right, Paul. We have some news that I'm not
- 43:44Speaker 2: happy about. I'm not going to lie to you. I'm
- 43:46Speaker 2: a little bummed about this.
- 43:47Speaker 4: I know it's coming.
- 43:48Speaker 8: Okay.
- 43:48Speaker 2: Minnesota quarterback Kyler Murray is out of the concussion protocol.
- 43:52Speaker 2: I'm happy about that part. That's great. What I'm not
- 43:54Speaker 2: happy about is they're immediately going back to him against
- 43:57Speaker 2: Tampa Bay this week. Bye-bye Carson Wentz. Carson Wentz is 2-0.
- 44:01Speaker 2: Kyler Murray did not look good when he was out
- 44:03Speaker 2: there in week one. Why are they so certain that
- 44:06Speaker 2: Kyler Murray is the guy to lead this team?
- 44:08Speaker 3: I think Wentz is a safe and smart pick here,
- 44:10Speaker 3: but I think this might be, look at Carson Wentz
- 44:12Speaker 3: doing good work.
- 44:13Speaker 2: And that was in the driving rain. Of course he
- 44:15Speaker 2: did nothing against the Bears. Nobody could do anything.
- 44:17Speaker 3: I wouldn't say he beat the Bears, but he definitely
- 44:19Speaker 3: didn't lose to the Bears. He played better than them.
- 44:21Speaker 4: I would say this. I think this is a management decision.
- 44:24Speaker 3: I think their head coach is being encouraged to start
- 44:26Speaker 3: Kyler Murray because that was the offseason direction. Let's see
- 44:31Speaker 3: if Kyler Murray could take us to heights. I don't
- 44:32Speaker 3: think they see heights with Carson Wentz. They think he can, like,
- 44:36Speaker 3: As they say, keep things afloat. That's the big term
- 44:38Speaker 3: these days when backup quarterbacks keep things afloat. I think
- 44:41Speaker 3: they want to give Kyler Murray half the season to
- 44:43Speaker 3: see if he could work himself into Kyler Murray four
- 44:46Speaker 3: years ago.
- 44:47Speaker 2: Part of me thinks the Vikings don't know what they're doing.
- 44:49Speaker 2: Based on this, there was Kyler Murray and J.J. McCarthy
- 44:52Speaker 2: battling all August to see who gets the starting job.
- 44:54Speaker 2: Carson Wentz only worked out with the third team. What
- 44:57Speaker 2: happens in week one? Kyler Murray gets hurt. Carson Wentz
- 44:59Speaker 2: is right in there with the first team. Took him
- 45:01Speaker 2: a few quarters, but he adjusted. I think he deserves
- 45:04Speaker 2: this spot. And honestly, I think he's the best quarterback
- 45:06Speaker 2: out of those three quarterbacks.
- 45:07Speaker 4: And I think Justin Jefferson, if he had a vote,
- 45:08Speaker 4: would go with Carson Wentz.
- 45:09Speaker 2: Yeah. How hard is it to be the Vikings quarterback?
- 45:12Speaker 2: Find Justin Jefferson on every play.
- 45:14Speaker 4: And don't run.
- 45:15Speaker 3: All right, coming up, here we have constructive criticism. Your feedback, questions, comments.
- 45:20Speaker 3: What is the color of the shirt?
- 45:21Speaker 4: We don't know.
- 45:22Speaker 2: Here we go.
- 45:23Speaker 4: Constructive criticism. First one, Pearl.
- 45:26Speaker 3: When celebrating your birthday, do you go cake or pie?
- 45:29Speaker 3: I prefer cherry pie.
- 45:29Speaker 4: This is Nick in Texas. Big fan of Not So Fast.
- 45:32Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah. You notice his Twitter handle is ThePerloffs. He
- 45:36Speaker 2: used to run the Perloff Fan Club. Oh, yes.
- 45:38Speaker 4: I subscribe to that page.
- 45:39Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean, it wasn't huge, but it's growing. Happy birthday, Nick.
- 45:43Speaker 2: I found this very, very different. Like, he's from a
- 45:46Speaker 2: different part of the country. People go pie on their birthday?
- 45:48Speaker 3: I don't know, but I'm into it. Apple pie, pumpkin pie,
- 45:51Speaker 3: blueberry pie. I think I may do that this year
- 45:54Speaker 3: just to support our fan.
- 45:55Speaker 2: Can you stick a candle in a piece of pie?
- 45:57Speaker 4: I think you can comfortably.
- 45:58Speaker 2: That could be dangerous, Paul, from a fire safety angle.
- 46:03Speaker 2: I don't know about this.
- 46:04Speaker 4: Stop, drop, and roll. That's what my mom taught me.
- 46:05Speaker 4: All right, here we go.
- 46:06Speaker 3: The next one, constructive criticism. These yellow jerseys that the
- 46:10Speaker 3: Rams look like practice jersey shelf jerseys. Okay, can we
- 46:13Speaker 3: just go back to the classic looks for each team?
- 46:16Speaker 3: And also, Rams uniform, ouch. We are the home of
- 46:19Speaker 3: uniform criticism on TV. I was not offended by these.
- 46:23Speaker 3: The yellow is too much for me. It also looks
- 46:25Speaker 3: kind of like see-through, which I don't really want to
- 46:27Speaker 3: do that with football players.
- 46:28Speaker 4: Maybe my wife I would.
- 46:30Speaker 3: I like the stripes. I like the pants stripes. But
- 46:33Speaker 3: the Rams have so many better options in their history.
- 46:35Speaker 3: That's what's bothersome to people. They have great uniforms in
- 46:38Speaker 3: their past. Just pick one and stick with it, for
- 46:40Speaker 3: God's sake.
- 46:40Speaker 2: The best one is all white and then a white
- 46:43Speaker 2: helmet with a blue stripe. Now, they went halfway there
- 46:46Speaker 2: by bringing the white helmet back. If they bring that
- 46:49Speaker 2: sort of Deacon Jones white look, that would be amazing. No,
- 46:52Speaker 2: it's funny, too. Todd Fritz showed up at the Dan
- 46:54Speaker 2: Patrick Show wearing that unusual Rams color. I don't know
- 46:57Speaker 2: how he had that actual color in his wardrobe.
- 47:00Speaker 3: I don't want to see anything see-through on him. All right,
- 47:01Speaker 3: last one, constructive criticism.
- 47:03Speaker 4: Here's one.
- 47:04Speaker 3: Duke deserves more love from Michael Manker, which is a
- 47:07Speaker 3: fun name to say.
- 47:08Speaker 4: Okay, here's Duke football. They're pretty good.
- 47:10Speaker 3: They're much more competitive than the past decade. And you
- 47:12Speaker 3: have UNC next month and then Miami on November 14th.
- 47:16Speaker 3: If Duke beats Miami on November 14th, you're going to
- 47:19Speaker 3: get all the love you ever needed.
- 47:20Speaker 2: Yeah, that's not happening. Listen, Darian Mensah was still at Duke.
- 47:24Speaker 2: Then we could have that conversation. But I don't think
- 47:27Speaker 2: they have a chance. Miami didn't look great against Wake, though.
- 47:29Speaker 4: All right, Duke, you're on the clock. All right, here
- 47:32Speaker 4: we go.
- 47:32Speaker 2: The feel-good.
- 47:33Speaker 3: It's time for the feel-good on Not So Fast. And
- 47:35Speaker 3: this is an extra, extra special one, I'm being told.
- 47:39Speaker 3: San Francisco Giants rookie Bo Davidson, good baseball name. His
- 47:43Speaker 3: first career at-bat, his first career hit, and look at
- 47:46Speaker 3: the family in the stands at Pac Bell, AT & T,
- 47:51Speaker 3: Oracle Park, whatever it's called.
- 47:53Speaker 2: That's great. So he's a September call-up. There's nothing better
- 47:57Speaker 2: than a September call-up making some noise. That's one of
- 47:59Speaker 2: my fantasies. I don't fantasize about starting first baseman for
- 48:02Speaker 2: the Phillies. I'm a September call-up guy.
- 48:04Speaker 3: You know, I think if your team is not in
- 48:05Speaker 3: the playoffs and not really playing for anything, if you
- 48:07Speaker 3: get a first hit in front of your family, just
- 48:09Speaker 3: invite them on the field to celebrate with you.
- 48:11Speaker 2: Absolutely. Have mom be a pinch runner. Why not?
- 48:14Speaker 4: Yeah, just run in the stands, jump around, and see
- 48:16Speaker 4: what you can do.
- 48:18Speaker 2: Again, it's funny. Baseball, we're getting towards the end, Paul.
- 48:21Speaker 4: Just a couple games left, a couple playoff races.
- 48:23Speaker 3: I think the AL West is in flux, but who knows.
- 48:26Speaker 4: All right, that was it.
- 48:27Speaker 3: Good Rams game last night, not so good for the Giants.
- 48:29Speaker 3: We'll keep an eye on injuries all week here on
- 48:31Speaker 3: Not So Fast. Jane Daniels, Kayla Williams, and Jackson Dart.
- 48:35Speaker 2: Oh, man, I hope they're no more.
- 48:36Speaker 3: All right, tune in tomorrow at the Dan Patrick Show,
- 48:38Speaker 3: 9 to noon Eastern, right here on Peacock.
- 48:41Speaker 4: Stick around for us right afterwards. Talk to you later.
