- 0:11Hello friends, it's shown here. It is Tuesday, it's the 4th of
- 0:16June, and it's good to have your company, friend.
- 0:19Thanks for bringing me in. This might be part of your daily
- 0:24ritual everyday, or this might be one of the first times you've
- 0:27joined us, or you might be someone who dips in and out and
- 0:30have done for years wherever this is in your daily life
- 0:35schedule. So glad that you're here today
- 0:37because today we are going to do what we always do, which is just
- 0:41sit down and read one chapter of God's Word together and see what
- 0:46God's Spirit has to say to us and shape us in our experience
- 0:50of today. And my prayer is that the words
- 0:54that we share and this time we'll extend beyond the mere 567
- 0:59minute duration and actually colour the rest of the day.
- 1:03You know how people say when you do some good solid exercise that
- 1:06increases your metabolism for the rest of the day?
- 1:09Well, as we read God's word, it increases our spiritual
- 1:12metabolism so that God's Spirit can continue to remind us of the
- 1:16truths that we are about to encounter.
- 1:19How cool is that? And one of the lovely truths
- 1:22that just resounds again and again and again in this book in
- 1:26the Bible is that simple. Simple is better.
- 1:30And we, we try to over complicate our lives, but it's a
- 1:33little things. It's a simple things that really
- 1:35are the greatest. And today is no exception, as
- 1:40the author is going to tell us about the beauty of sharing a
- 1:43life with another person and the minefield of politics.
- 1:48I'm sure we can all relate to that at the moment.
- 1:51Well, all the time, probably. While having said all that, let
- 1:55us sit down at the foot of the teacher and hear what he has to
- 1:59share with us. In Ecclesiastes chapter 4,
- 2:13again I observed all the oppression that takes place
- 2:16under the sun. I saw the tears of the oppressed
- 2:20with no one to comfort them. The oppressors have great power
- 2:24and their victims are helpless. So I concluded that the dead are
- 2:29better off than the living. But most fortunate of all are
- 2:34those who are not yet born, for they have not seen all the evil
- 2:37that is done under the sun. Then I observed that most people
- 2:41are motivated to succeed because they envy their neighbours.
- 2:46But this too is meaningless. Like chasing the wind, fools
- 2:51fold their idle hands, leading them to ruin.
- 2:55And yet, better to have one handful with quietness than two
- 3:00handfuls with hard work. And chasing the wind, I observed
- 3:05yet another example of something meaningless under the sun.
- 3:09This is the case of a man who is all alone, without a child or a
- 3:13brother, yet who works hard to gain as much wealth as he can.
- 3:18But then he asks himself, who am I working for?
- 3:22Why am I giving up so much pleasure now?
- 3:26It is all so meaningless and depressing.
- 3:30Two people are better off than one, for they can help each
- 3:34other succeed. If one person falls, the other
- 3:38can reach out and help, but someone who falls alone is in
- 3:42real trouble. Likewise, two people lying close
- 3:46together can keep each other warm, but how can one be warm
- 3:50alone? A person standing alone can be
- 3:53attacked and defeated, but two can stand back to back and
- 3:57conquer. Three are even better, for a
- 4:01triple braided cord is not easily broken.
- 4:06It is better to be a poor but wise youth than an old and
- 4:10foolish king who refuses all advice.
- 4:13Such a youth could rise from poverty and succeed.
- 4:17He might even become king. He has been in prison, but then
- 4:21everyone rushes to the side of yet another youth who replaces
- 4:25him. Endless crowd stand around him,
- 4:29but then another generation grows up and rejects him too, so
- 4:33it is all meaningless, like chasing the wind.
- 4:48Thank you Lord, that you have not made us in isolation.
- 4:51We are born and nurtured under the care of the generation
- 4:55above, surrounded by our generation, made for community
- 5:01and love and companionship. Well, thank you for the gift of
- 5:05all of those people you give us in our lives, who we share this
- 5:08with, who each day give us a smile on our face and a reason
- 5:13to get out of bed. Thank you that you are a God of
- 5:18relationship, that within your triune nature you are
- 5:22relationship, and that this is how you've made us.
- 5:28So we come before you, we feel your love, we thank you for your
- 5:32presence, and we praise you all in the name of Jesus.
- 5:37I'm in.
