Speaker 1: recorded last week that Roki Sasaki is going to be

Speaker 1: coming over from the NPB. I think this caught some

Speaker 1: people off guard overall. Honestly, for me, I was kind

Speaker 1: of thinking that this would happen coming into the off season,

Speaker 1: given especially seeing how the tea leaves were reading in

Speaker 1: the off season. After twenty twenty three, Sasaki had some

Speaker 1: sort of tiff with his club over there, the Chiba

Speaker 1: Lote Marines, and you know, there was word that he

Speaker 1: really wanted out of that contract, wanted to come over,

Speaker 1: and on top of it all, like he was threatening,

Speaker 1: holding out and doing some things in terms of like

Speaker 1: just not playing and you know, not necessarily honoring the

Speaker 1: contract that he had signed. If you don't know how

Speaker 1: a phenom coming out of school that he wanted to

Speaker 1: make sure that he had the chance at MLB early.

Speaker 1: There's some speculation that Susaki had something like that in

Speaker 1: his contract. But the other factor here is that because

Speaker 1: of where how the just system of bringing players over

Speaker 1: to MLB works is that when Otani came over, his

Speaker 1: club got an extra bonus on top of what they

Speaker 1: were paid in terms of the transfer fee. Essentially is

Speaker 1: Sasaki now underneath the new rules because he's coming over

Speaker 1: before he reached free agency in Japan, he has to

Speaker 2: mind he had a down year in twenty twenty four

Speaker 2: on rookie Sasaki terms so and a one hundred and

Speaker 2: ten innings eighteen games, he was ten and five with

Speaker 2: a two point three with a one point four whip,

Speaker 2: and then he struck out ten and a half per

Speaker 2: nine and walked just about two and a half per nine.

Speaker 2: He was unbelievable, and that was a bad year for

Speaker 2: Roki Sasaki. I don't know how to say it, because

Speaker 2: in the two years prior, his whip was below eight,

Speaker 2: his ERA was averaged below two, he was striking out

Speaker 2: twelve or thirteen guys per nine. He's literally untouchable, and

Speaker 2: so I look at him immediately as a top fifteen,

Speaker 2: maybe top ten pitcher coming over. There's gonna be a

Speaker 2: justin period. He is younger, he's gonna be figuring things out.

Speaker 2: He is gonna be stretched a little bit more. They'll

Speaker 2: proably try to keep him a little bit more rest

Speaker 2: throughout the season, things like that. But I am excited

Speaker 2: about Roki Sasaki. I probably won't own him either, because

Speaker 2: the hype train will get going very very quickly as

Speaker 1: I think there is maybe more of a chance than

Speaker 1: people are giving it. But like the Dodgers have gotta

Speaker 1: He is going to be twenty three years old. This

Speaker 1: is exactly the type of player where the Dodgers need

Speaker 1: to go all in on him to be able to

Speaker 1: bring him over, especially if you're trying to create you know,

Speaker 1: an outlandish ad for the Los Angeles Dodgers. But I've

Speaker 1: heard and read about a lot of reports that Sasaki

Speaker 1: is a little bit shyer actually, if you don't know

Speaker 1: his background, he lost his father and his grandparents in

Speaker 1: the tsunami that happened, you know, in Fukushima. I think

Speaker 1: it was eleven I believe when that happened, and so

Speaker 1: in terms of just the weight of that, and it

Speaker 1: has been especially just given the way that the Japanese

Speaker 1: twenty COVID pandemic. I've also heard, you know that there's

Speaker 1: just not as much kind of like outword outgoingness, kind

Speaker 1: of like with the players, and Sasaki certainly falls into that.

Speaker 1: So he might tend to gravitate somewhere with a smaller market.

Speaker 1: given all the advantages the Dodgers have between like you said,

Speaker 1: got to know that if you're going to the Dodgers,

Speaker 1: it's you're in the best shot to win a World Series.

Speaker 2: we have to recognize the economics of baseball isn't just

Speaker 2: A slight concern. I think it's kind of baked into

Speaker 2: what we're already seen, since we saw some of the

Speaker 2: results take a slight downtick in twenty twenty four, and

Speaker 2: he was coming over last year with those phenomenal seasons,

Speaker 2: like we would be talking about like is this a

Speaker 2: a degree. And would you looked at when he played though,

Speaker 2: I mean the guy pitched he averaged getting into the

Speaker 2: seventh inning, so he averaged a little over six almost

Speaker 2: six third innings for every game he pitched last year,

Speaker 2: so he can go deep deeper into games, and that's

Speaker 2: kind of like the standard. And I look at the

Speaker 2: state of pitching these days, like is he that much

Speaker 2: more risky than anybody else? Probably not so unless you're

Speaker 2: comparing him to you know, an Aeron Nola or something

Speaker 2: like that and be like, yeah, he's always healthy. I

Speaker 2: say that you trust their health, and then they'll probably get

Speaker 2: hurt next year. So I'm not too concerned. But I

Speaker 1: is that this was a great place to invest in

Speaker 1: the Japanese baseball card market with Broki Sasaki in anticipation

Speaker 1: of him coming over, much like Yamamoto came over and

Speaker 1: code I Senga came over and even say a Suzuki

Speaker 1: that when these guys come over, there are jumps in

Speaker 1: their prices, and obviously everybody's trying to capture the Otani market,

Speaker 1: which is absolutely Stopananas. But I know you've invested in

Speaker 1: the Susaki market and have been doing pretty well, so

Speaker 1: what kind of lessons have you learned through that process,

Speaker 1: and if you have any kind of cards that obviously

Speaker 1: it's already exploding from the market side, but any cards

Speaker 1: maybe from Sasaki that are out there on the market

Speaker 2: Yeah. So you know, we go back to I think

Speaker 2: the end of the year when we did our New

Speaker 2: Year's resolutions, and one that I think I through out

Speaker 2: there was I'm going to spend more time in the

Speaker 2: Japanese card market, and I did, and I spent time

Speaker 2: there and uh, Roki was a tough one, and I

Speaker 2: spent time with Roki Sasaki and uh murk Murakami. I'm

Speaker 2: gonna get to butcher Murakami's name's i I And I

Speaker 2: ended up probably pulling in maybe fifteen twenty different cards,

Speaker 2: uh for Roki over the year. And the problem with

Speaker 2: him was he's a star, like absolutely star in Japan,

Speaker 2: and so his cards are not selling. Like, yeah, Moto

Speaker 2: was good, Shotto was good, but you could you could

Speaker 2: buy their you know, base cars for basically a buck

Speaker 2: per in a lot here and there, or some of

Speaker 2: their inserts for three or four dollars things like that,

Speaker 2: and you could you could you know, find them. It

Speaker 2: was it wasn't hard. Actually, yeah, Moti like you could

Speaker 2: find him like a month before he came over. Roki

Speaker 2: man that that was tough off. And what what we're

Speaker 2: seeing right now with Roki's market is as soon as

Speaker 2: the news broke, his market jumped, and now the market's

Speaker 2: actually continuing to kind of jump. And I'll say, I

Speaker 2: think it's about a four x right now on what

Speaker 2: you were buying cards for a month or two ago

Speaker 2: in for Roki Sazaki. To your point, a lot of

Speaker 2: a lot of people didn't think he was coming over. Clearly,

Speaker 2: you and I both thought there's a good chance, but

Speaker 2: it otherwise. I was a buying Sasaki cards last year,

Speaker 2: but you know, folks didn't think he was coming over.

Speaker 2: And then he came, like the news broke, and all

Speaker 2: of a sudden, they're like, this guy may be better

Speaker 2: than Yng Moto and Ima Naga. So I want to

Speaker 2: go get his cards. And I also think you're getting

Speaker 2: a little bit of that Dodger market plane and they're

Speaker 2: expecting him to come. So some of those collectors there

Speaker 2: because what we saw last year with Imanaga and now

Speaker 2: Moto was their cards had a small jump, maybe like

Speaker 2: a two x jump when they announced the posting, and

Speaker 2: even that it was it was slight, like even Aga

Speaker 2: didn't get a whole lot of jump. And then when

Speaker 2: they signed then you saw that jump and and I

Speaker 2: would say it was still about a three or four

Speaker 2: x jump based on what they were selling for prior

Speaker 2: to being posted. But for you know, a Shota or

Speaker 2: something like that, you went from a one dollar card

Speaker 2: to a four dollar card, or maybe a five dollar

Speaker 2: card to a fifteen dollar card. And what you're seeing

Speaker 2: right now with with rookie is rookies. Rookie cards are

Speaker 2: almost one hundred dollars now coming over from from BBM.

Speaker 2: This is twenty twenty was his rookie year there, and

Speaker 2: they're going for basically one hundred dollars and that's the

Speaker 2: base rookie card. Don't get me started on the variations.

Speaker 2: And they don't actually do auto cards there. They do

Speaker 2: a fasimile autos and they're like gold or silver. They're

Speaker 2: really cool looking, but they don't I mean, there are

Speaker 2: a few auto cards, let me be clear, but they're

Speaker 2: like very very few of those, and we're talking five

Speaker 2: ten thousand, so it's not like what you'd expect here

Speaker 2: a state side. So that market's gone crazy. You're you're

Speaker 2: seeing inserts go for forty fifty bucks, You're seeing base

Speaker 2: cards go for ten twenty dollars, and the thing is

Speaker 2: there is just so little available. And that's I think,

Speaker 2: what what's driving this is. He was in the WBC set,

Speaker 2: he was in the MPB Chrome top set what they

Speaker 2: did this year, and those are the only two sets

Speaker 2: I believe he's in that were sold state side. Everything

Speaker 2: else was his BBM or his Calby sets over in Japan.

Speaker 2: And BBM is kind of like the premieres, like the

Speaker 2: tops set. Calby is like Don Russ that like, and

Speaker 2: you get the card gage. It's just a different quality

Speaker 2: and so and that's what's what's just crazy. So the

Speaker 2: to kind of watch out for is the MPB bass

Speaker 2: Chrome because it was sold state side, so you can

Speaker 2: find them here. Everything else the bbm's the Calbi stuff

Speaker 2: like that. Unless some crazy person like me bought them,

Speaker 2: you're not getting them shipped to you within the next week.

Speaker 2: It's gonna take a month a month and a half

Speaker 2: to get over from Japan. If you're buying those the MPB,

Speaker 2: are kind of looking at them. Some people are looking

Speaker 2: eight bucks of assorted packs and things like that. So
