- 0:00Dot com. Welcome to the Daily Quote, the
- 0:06podcast designed to kick start your day in a positive way.
- 0:11I'm your host, Andrew McGivern, and this episode is brought to
- 0:15you by the Great News Podcast. Why?
- 0:18Because good news should be heard, and the link is right
- 0:22here in the show notes. Today's quote comes from John C
- 0:26Maxwell, author of more than 100 books, including some of the
- 0:31best selling, leadership and personal development titles ever
- 0:35written, with over 30 million copies sold worldwide.
- 0:40He's a man who spent his entire career studying what separates
- 0:45people who grow from people who simply get older.
- 0:50He once said growth's highest reward is not what we get from
- 0:54it, but what we become by it. We live in an outcomes culture.
- 1:01We measure growth by what it produces.
- 1:04The promotion, the income, the fitness school, the skill level,
- 1:08the milestone reached. And those things do matter.
- 1:12Results are real. They confirm that the work is
- 1:16working, but Maxwell is pointing at something that sits quietly
- 1:20beneath all of it, something most people never stop long
- 1:24enough to notice. The real reward of any growth
- 1:29you undertake isn't the outcome it produces, it's the person it
- 1:34produces. Think about what actually
- 1:37changes when you commit to genuine growth over time.
- 1:41Yes, your results improve, but something deeper shifts too.
- 1:46Your capacity for difficulty expands.
- 1:50Problems that would have broken you two years ago and no longer
- 1:54do, not because the problems got smaller, but because you got
- 1:59larger. Your patience deepens, your
- 2:03self-awareness sharpens, your tolerance for uncertainty grows,
- 2:09and your ability to serve other people increases in proportion
- 2:13to how much you've invested in yourself.
- 2:16Maxwell himself put it plainly. We cannot become what we need by
- 2:23remaining what we are. That's the quiet urgency
- 2:27underneath today's quote. Growth isn't optional.
- 2:31If you want to be capable of the life you're trying to build and
- 2:35the cultivation of that capability, the becoming is
- 2:39always the deeper prides. Here's a useful distinction
- 2:44Maxwell draws through his work. Most people are goal conscious.
- 2:49They fix their eyes on a destination and measure
- 2:52everything by whether they've arrived.
- 2:55But the people who grow most consistently are growth
- 2:59conscious. They focus on the journey, on
- 3:03the person being built by the process, trusting that the
- 3:07destination will take care of itself if the becoming is taken
- 3:12care of first. As Maxwell says, if you're goal
- 3:17conscious, you focus on a destination.
- 3:20If you're growth conscious, you're focusing on a journey.
- 3:24The trophy sits on a shelf. The person you became earning
- 3:29that trophy goes everywhere with you for the rest of your life.
- 3:35So here's the question in the growth you're currently
- 3:39pursuing, or the growth you've been putting off, are you
- 3:43focused only on what you'll get from it, or are you also paying
- 3:48attention to what it's making of you?
- 3:51Because the outcomes may or may not arrive exactly as you
- 3:55planned. Goals move, timeline, shift.
- 3:59Results are never fully under your control.
- 4:03But that person being built by the consistent effort, the
- 4:08becoming that belongs entirely to you, and no set back, no
- 4:14delay, no change in circumstances can take it away.
- 4:19Grow for the outcomes, but stay for what you become.
- 4:26That's going to do it for today. I'm Andrew McGivern, signing off
- 4:29for now, but I'll be back tomorrow.
- 4:34Same pod time, same pod station with another daily quote.
