- 0:00Hi everyone, welcome to Mini Scroll, the daily Internet
- 0:03culture podcast bringing you the biggest stories from social
- 0:06media, the creator economy and the digital space.
- 0:09Every Monday through Thursday. I'm your host, Lauren Meissner,
- 0:13the founder of the youth digital media brand Centennial World.
- 0:17It is finally a nice day up at the cottage.
- 0:20I have been here for just over a week and almost every single day
- 0:24it's been like cloudy and rainy and cold.
- 0:26And I'm like, I thought I came out of that out of Sydney winter
- 0:29to come to Canadian summer. And normally like the Toronto
- 0:33area gets quite warm in summer, but it's just been like a shit
- 0:36week. Anyways, I'm so excited and I'm
- 0:38sure you guys can tell because if you watch on YouTube then you
- 0:41will have seen the lighting in my videos change so much every
- 0:46single day. I've never realized the value of
- 0:49like artificial studio lights before because I haven't had to
- 0:52like properly film with only natural light since I started
- 0:56this podcast. But here we are.
- 0:58And I think it's like a beautiful day.
- 1:01It's a vibe. All right, so let's just get
- 1:03into the first story for you guys today.
- 1:05I have two stories. So the first is that there is
- 1:09speculation, very seriously valid speculation, that
- 1:13subreddits are about to be paywalled.
- 1:17So last week during an earnings call, Reddit CEO Steve Huffman
- 1:21suggested they might pay wall certain subreddits, he said.
- 1:25Quote, I think the existing altruistic free version of
- 1:27Reddit will continue to exist and grow and thrive just the way
- 1:31it has. But now we will unlock the door
- 1:33for new use cases, new types of subreddits that can be built
- 1:36that may have exclusive content or private areas, things of that
- 1:40nature. So this development comes as
- 1:44part of Reddit's revenue boosting strategy after the
- 1:46company went public at the start of this year.
- 1:49Some of the most controversial decisions of this nature
- 1:52relating to this revenue boosting strategy so far were
- 1:55when Huffman decided to hike up the API fees last year, which
- 1:58essentially led to a bunch of third party apps that relied on
- 2:01that API to basically close go bankrupt because they couldn't
- 2:06afford those fees. For anyone that doesn't
- 2:08remember, actually did a full deep dive into the history of
- 2:10Reddit and I talked about that. I think it was a couple months
- 2:14back. So definitely go listen to that.
- 2:15But basically there was a bunch of third party apps that would
- 2:18use Reddit's. I think it was free API to
- 2:23deliver the app or like the service, but like Reddit
- 2:26basically interface in a more user friendly way than the
- 2:30Reddit app currently exists. And there was one major one,
- 2:33Apollo, that people were obsessed with and like everyone
- 2:36used that one for years. And then Apollo unfortunately
- 2:39had to close after they change the API from free to I think it
- 2:43was going to be like $20 million a year for Apollo to pay for
- 2:48that fee. And more recently, Reddit signed
- 2:51a deal with Google, which allows Google to train its AI model off
- 2:54of Reddit's massive database of posts.
- 2:57And then Reddit has also blocked other AI companies like Open AI
- 3:01and stuff like that from crawling.
- 3:03Its I don't know if it's servers or whatever its posts unless
- 3:06they pay a fee. So I think open AI has actually
- 3:09like also strike to deal with Reddit as well, but it actually
- 3:12seems to be working. I know that Reddit's revenue is
- 3:15up massively from the previous year.
- 3:18So you know this CEO, he's come in and he is like, I'm ACEO,
- 3:21like I am here to make the company profitable to make like
- 3:25the hard business decisions, whether that impacts users or
- 3:28not. That is just kind of the role of
- 3:29an executive at that level. And I mean, I guess it's
- 3:32working. I don't know how anyone is going
- 3:34to feel about paywalled subreddits that's a bit
- 3:37unhinged, but we will see, OK. And the second story that I have
- 3:41for you guys today is that JoJo Siwa has opened up about feeling
- 3:45like Trisha Paytas used her for clout when she was young.
- 3:48So on an episode of Jojo's podcast, JoJo Siwa Now, the
- 3:52controversial star spoke about her relationship with Trisha
- 3:54Paytas and how she feels Trisha used her back in the day.
- 3:58So we all know back when JoJo was a minor, she would
- 4:02collaborate a lot with different Youtubers who were much older
- 4:05than her. You know, Colleen Ballinger was
- 4:08obviously one major one. And she also had filmed some
- 4:11videos with Tricia as well. And a lot of them, I think we're
- 4:13like related to Tricia's relationship with Jason Nash
- 4:16because JoJo would film with David in the vlog squad.
- 4:19But either way, like she filmed videos with Tricia in discussing
- 4:22people that she would want as a guest on her podcast.
- 4:25And I just, I can't even say that without thinking of that
- 4:27clip. Dream guest on my podcast.
- 4:32She said she would not want Tricia as a guest because she
- 4:35feels used by her. She said quote, yes, we would
- 4:38and we did videos together when I was a kid.
- 4:40And what's so interesting is she Tricia has a lot to say about me
- 4:44nowadays and that's fine. A lot of people have a lot to
- 4:46say about me nowadays. But what hurts my heart is a lot
- 4:49of people who were friends with me when I was a kid are friends
- 4:51with me now. And that tells me that they
- 4:54weren't friends with me because they were using me because I was
- 4:56a kid. I did bring a lot of views.
- 4:58I brought a lot of views to a lot of people's videos and my
- 5:01own videos. What breaks my heart, not as a
- 5:0321 year old, but it breaks my heart for that 14 year old that
- 5:06did videos with Tricia. She thought Tricia actually
- 5:08liked her. You guys know how I feel about
- 5:10JoJo. I think she is publicly in the
- 5:14throes of deconstructing what happened to her as a child star.
- 5:18And I think this is actually quite a good example of this.
- 5:20She's still very much in denial. Like the fact that she, you
- 5:23know, I know she's still quite young.
- 5:24She's 21. The fact that she still believes
- 5:28she's still not ready to accept that just because Colleen
- 5:31Ballinger and these other Youtubers kept speaking with her
- 5:34after she kind of transitioned her channel from JoJo Siwa to
- 5:39like, it's more of like a brand channel now.
- 5:41Just because they stayed in touch with her doesn't mean that
- 5:44they were like best friends. Like what does a 30 year old
- 5:48have in common with a 14 year old?
- 5:50Like, why would they be friends with JoJo other than for a
- 5:55business benefit, right? Doesn't mean that they're not
- 5:58like friendly with her still. But the fact that she's using
- 6:01Tricia not wanting to be her like actual friend as a reason
- 6:06for the fact that she used her. And she can't see the fact that,
- 6:09like someone like Colleen, who has had so many allegations
- 6:13against her about acting inappropriately with really
- 6:15young fans and minors over the course of her career, Like she
- 6:18can't see that how Colleen treated JoJo when she was a
- 6:22teenager is more inappropriate is so indicative, I believe of
- 6:27like the mental space that she's in.
- 6:29Like, she's still very much a child star in her, like, you
- 6:32know, inside. And she can't unravel that yet.
- 6:35Like she can't kind of like come to terms, I think with like how
- 6:39the industry treated her and how the adults around her treated
- 6:42her and how exploited she actually was.
- 6:44So Tricia responded on her podcast and she basically said
- 6:48she was not about to become friends with a 13 year old.
- 6:51She said they were friend Lee and JoJo was very nice, but
- 6:55there was no hanging out outside of filming because it would be
- 6:58weird. And she was like, yeah, I filmed
- 7:00with JoJo. It was like a business decision.
- 7:02We were working together, but that doesn't mean that I'm going
- 7:06to go become friends with her. She mentioned a New Year's Eve
- 7:08party that she was invited to at Jojos, and she didn't go.
- 7:11She was like, that would be so weird.
- 7:13She's like, it's not because I don't like JoJo, like she's
- 7:15super nice, but like that would just be inappropriate and weird.
- 7:18So I know JoJo gets a lot of Flack for being a bit
- 7:21problematic and defending, you know, abusers and people that
- 7:24have exploited others, but also people, the same people that
- 7:27have exploited her. She came out in defensive
- 7:28Colleen Ballinger last year. And I don't know, I think
- 7:33sometimes, and this happens with child stars, we don't especially
- 7:37JoJo because she hasn't actually transitioned.
- 7:39I know she I know like Karma and like her new album and stuff is
- 7:43supposed to be her like step into adulthood.
- 7:46I think it's very clear that it's not, you know, she's just
- 7:49kind of turned her like rainbow sparkly vibes into like sparkly
- 7:53black vibes and is like hoping that that shows that she's
- 7:56matured and growing and kind of like in her adult phase.
- 8:01But I don't think she's quite there yet.
- 8:02And I think sometimes with child stars, including JoJo, what
- 8:05happens is we we place more, I think adultness.
- 8:10I like, I'm not sure what the right word is.
- 8:12Like, we adult ify them the adultification, I suppose, of
- 8:15child stars. Like we treat them like they are
- 8:19adults, obviously so much younger than they are.
- 8:21And I think JoJo is only 21 and she still has a lot of
- 8:24unlearning to do. But I don't think a lot of us
- 8:26are giving her enough grace to do that.
- 8:29So she's going to make mistakes. Like she's going to defend
- 8:32Colleen, you know, and she's going to defend the wrong people
- 8:34and she's going to say the wrong things because she's dealing
- 8:38with like what happened to her. But she's like not taking a step
- 8:41back like a lot of child stars do and like deal with it and
- 8:43like reconcile with it privately.
- 8:45Like she's doing all of this in front of us because she's trying
- 8:48to maintain her career. So I don't know.
- 8:51So I think that's partly what we're seeing here.
- 8:54Anyways, guys, that's it for Mini scroll today.
