- 0:10Speaker 1: Hello, this is Peter Mayhew.
- 0:12Speaker 2: Are you listening to Movie Mountain Time?
- 0:21Speaker 1: It's showtime. The following feature has been rated R by
- 0:25Speaker 1: the Motion Picture Association of America.
- 0:27Speaker 3: It is intended for mature audiences and parental discretion is advised.
- 0:31Speaker 4: Our nuclear reactor pumping out one million kilowatts of power.
- 1:02Speaker 4: What's up, and welcome to Movie Meltdown.
- 1:04Speaker 5: I'm Brian, and this week we are back.
- 1:07Speaker 4: With the second half of our epic Star Wars discussion.
- 1:12Speaker 6: And I should start off by saying, once again, spoiler
- 1:18Speaker 6: alert for episode 7.
- 1:32Speaker 7: We are going to address the major spoiler of the movie,
- 1:35Speaker 7: so if you haven't seen The Force Awakens, you definitely
- 1:38Speaker 7: shouldn't be listening to this episode yet. And also, as
- 1:41Speaker 7: I said, this is the second half of the discussion,
- 1:44Speaker 7: so we'll be continuing the grand conversation that began last episode.
- 1:48Speaker 7: So if you haven't heard part one, go back and
- 1:51Speaker 7: listen to episode 333 to bring you up to speed.
- 1:54Speaker 7: And as we left that last episode, we said goodbye
- 1:56Speaker 7: to our co-hosts Jacqueline and Nick, and now we settle in.
- 1:59Speaker 7: with just three old-school Star Wars fans. Myself, Ben, and Jeff.
- 2:05Speaker 7: And we take this discussion to the next level. So
- 2:07Speaker 7: let's go there now as we rejoin these three Star
- 2:10Speaker 7: Wars fans as they talk about this thing that they've
- 2:12Speaker 7: devoted a good portion of their lives to.
- 2:24Speaker 2: Nobody geeks like a 40-year-old geek.
- 2:26Speaker 7: That's what I'm saying. This is what old men do.
- 2:28Speaker 7: So now that it's just the old men left.
- 2:30Speaker 2: Now let's complain the whole time.
- 2:34Speaker 7: I think we've had a lot of positive things to say.
- 2:36Speaker 7: What do you think of the marketing push? It was
- 2:39Speaker 7: something that's a side area that I wanted to at
- 2:42Speaker 7: least throw out there tonight.
- 2:45Speaker 2: Honestly, I was getting a little tired of it.
- 2:50Speaker 8: See, I don't, uh, I don't have TV.
- 2:52Speaker 7: Again, everybody I know avoided it.
- 2:53Speaker 8: Um, the only, there's a couple of websites I go
- 2:56Speaker 8: to that covered it, but they were very much like,
- 2:58Speaker 8: it's a good movie. Go see it. And then finally
- 3:01Speaker 8: on Friday, they're like, this is a spoiler filled post.
- 3:04Speaker 8: If you don't want anything spoiled, don't look at it.
- 3:07Speaker 8: But this is for the people that saw Thursday night
- 3:09Speaker 8: and we're going to talk about it.
- 3:11Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 3:11Speaker 2: Well, you know, when I say, uh, I have a TV.
- 3:16Speaker 2: I love my TV, but I don't watch over-the-air TV.
- 3:18Speaker 2: I'm just like the Netflix DVD. So I honestly have
- 3:21Speaker 2: not seen any of the televised commercials. I'm talking about
- 3:24Speaker 2: just the stuff everywhere. Like you would walk into Target and,
- 3:29Speaker 2: you know, like the Darth Vader Christmas ornaments. There's Star
- 3:32Speaker 2: Wars on everything. And this has been going on now
- 3:34Speaker 2: for a couple months now. And I was getting a
- 3:37Speaker 2: little overwhelmed of it. I was getting like, oh, God,
- 3:39Speaker 2: you know, I got a little bit tired of it.
- 3:41Speaker 2: Don't go out in public.
- 3:43Speaker 7: I don't care. Again, I spent so much of my
- 3:47Speaker 7: life buying Star Wars stuff that I'm kind of numb
- 3:49Speaker 7: to it, I think. If I put all the Star
- 3:52Speaker 7: Wars stuff I have out, again, half of it's boxed
- 3:54Speaker 7: up now because I'm a weird hoarder kid, as we
- 3:56Speaker 7: addressed earlier. Again, I think I've just seen so much.
- 4:00Speaker 7: I'm just so used to Star Wars merchandise in general
- 4:03Speaker 7: that it barely registers anymore.
- 4:05Speaker 2: It's just, you know, back when I was really collecting stuff,
- 4:08Speaker 2: you kind of had to really seek it out. It's
- 4:10Speaker 2: just that it's everywhere. It was starting to kind of
- 4:13Speaker 2: I can't think of the word. Where it takes away
- 4:19Speaker 2: the significance of something over time.
- 4:22Speaker 7: Maybe.
- 4:23Speaker 2: Just like seeing freaking Yodas on everything. Yodas and shit.
- 4:27Speaker 2: Yodas and shit everywhere. I don't know.
- 4:30Speaker 7: Again, I just don't care. It gives me the chance
- 4:34Speaker 7: to weed through these 400 things I don't want. Hey,
- 4:37Speaker 7: that one thing right there.
- 4:38Speaker 2: I want that.
- 4:39Speaker 7: Alright, I'm good. Again, I've had to.
- 4:43Speaker 7: Scale it back quite a bit over the years, and
- 4:45Speaker 7: I've gotten really good at it, and now it's like,
- 4:47Speaker 7: if I really need this dumb toy or whatever stupid
- 4:50Speaker 7: product I see, I know that I'm being duped into it,
- 4:54Speaker 7: I know they've been playing me for my entire life,
- 4:56Speaker 7: but now I just kinda like, I pick and choose,
- 5:00Speaker 7: and the fact that there's more stuff, that just gives
- 5:02Speaker 7: me more to choose from, so I don't care. Again,
- 5:05Speaker 7: it's part of how all this works. It's how these
- 5:07Speaker 7: multi-billion dollar deals get made, so if it brings us
- 5:11Speaker 7: more better movies again i if it makes bad movies
- 5:15Speaker 7: i'll you know damn it along with everything else but
- 5:18Speaker 7: if we get good movies out of it make whatever
- 5:19Speaker 7: side deals you have to do to get them made
- 5:21Speaker 7: i guess.
- 5:22Speaker 8: I mean if you want to brush your teeth with
- 5:24Speaker 8: three three cpo toothpaste using your darth vader toothbrush he
- 5:27Speaker 8: doesn't have any teeth you know how's he gonna eat
- 5:31Speaker 8: his 3po cereal i completely agree with your point if
- 5:34Speaker 8: if if you if making that deal with crest allows
- 5:40Speaker 8: you to have a little bit more money to make
- 5:43Speaker 8: a better movie the next time or to make a
- 5:46Speaker 8: great tie-in TV show, whatever, go right ahead. I'm not
- 5:51Speaker 8: going to buy it and I'm not going to be
- 5:53Speaker 8: part of it because I don't market myself with the
- 5:56Speaker 8: products I consume.
- 5:58Speaker 4: Oh, I do.
- 5:59Speaker 8: That's great. That's your choice.
- 6:01Speaker 7: But I do it knowingly is my thing. I'm like,
- 6:04Speaker 7: I know I'm being duped into this Boba Fett coffee mate.
- 6:07Speaker 7: But I, if I, you know, I don't feel like
- 6:08Speaker 7: I'm blindly being suckered in if I'm aware of it.
- 6:11Speaker 7: I'm like, then I'm fine with it. I'm like, as
- 6:13Speaker 7: long as I'm doing it knowing, it's only people that
- 6:15Speaker 7: are just like idiots that are just being suckered into
- 6:18Speaker 7: things by marketing schemes. And I'm like, I know they're
- 6:21Speaker 7: playing me. So if I know it, it takes their
- 6:24Speaker 7: power away and I just buy whatever the hell I want.
- 6:26Speaker 8: I take way more offense with crappy movie tie-ins that
- 6:32Speaker 8: just beget more crappy movies like Transformers.
- 6:35Speaker 2: You didn't get your uh, Kroll coffee mate with that.
- 6:38Speaker 8: Kroll is a great movie.
- 6:41Speaker 7: The Kroll throwdown begins.
- 6:43Speaker 2: Don't get me wrong. I love capitalism. I just personally,
- 6:47Speaker 2: I was just getting just a little bit tired of
- 6:49Speaker 2: seeing it and just maybe it's because deep down I
- 6:52Speaker 2: didn't want to hate the movie.
- 6:54Speaker 7: And I can see that.
- 6:55Speaker 2: It's, it's like, you know, like I didn't buy any,
- 6:58Speaker 2: I haven't bought anything. You know, I, Maybe I didn't
- 7:01Speaker 2: want to get Phantom Menace again. Because I was kind
- 7:04Speaker 2: of buying a lot of Phantom Menace merch going in.
- 7:07Speaker 7: No, I got a lot of that first run. A
- 7:09Speaker 7: lot of it, it's funny, was before it came out.
- 7:11Speaker 7: That's been the question, I guess, is how long... Because
- 7:15Speaker 7: I was trying to remember. Because it's kind of the
- 7:17Speaker 7: same thing. Because we may have even brought this up
- 7:19Speaker 7: initially when everybody watched that first trailer.
- 7:22Speaker 8: And we were like, man, that one's really good.
- 7:24Speaker 1: I can't wait. Oh, wait.
- 7:26Speaker 7: First Phantom Menace trailer we were all pretty excited about.
- 7:30Speaker 7: So I don't know. Do you, cause I was trying
- 7:31Speaker 7: to think back the first time I saw it. Cause
- 7:33Speaker 7: it was pretty early on. I was like, I don't
- 7:35Speaker 7: really think I like those movies, but I'm like, when
- 7:38Speaker 7: I left the theater that first time, like today I
- 7:41Speaker 7: left the theater. I'm like, that was fucking awesome. don't
- 7:44Speaker 7: remember saying that in Phantom Menace. I remember having more
- 7:47Speaker 7: problems with like, man, our seats were in a bad
- 7:50Speaker 7: place because there was a whole bunch of people and
- 7:51Speaker 7: like finding other things to be annoyed with. And then like, yeah, it's.
- 7:55Speaker 2: Because the movie wasn't capturing you completely. So you were
- 7:58Speaker 2: noticing your environment.
- 8:01Speaker 8: So at what point in the prequels did you realize
- 8:06Speaker 8: that they were crap? I can't pinpoint. It's not like
- 8:12Speaker 8: I walked out of Phantom Menace and went, that was
- 8:14Speaker 8: shit and I'm not going to see any more.
- 8:16Speaker 7: But I knew pretty early on I was not big
- 8:18Speaker 7: on that one. I do kind of remember midway in
- 8:22Speaker 7: not liking freaking, what's his face?
- 8:25Speaker 2: I actually do. I do remember the moment when I
- 8:28Speaker 2: was watching it and I was like, I don't care
- 8:30Speaker 2: about these people. And it was the moment when they
- 8:34Speaker 2: were breaking into the Naboo castle. They've all split up.
- 8:39Speaker 2: And it's the moment when Amalama Ding Dong and her
- 8:42Speaker 2: guards are standing on the window ledge and they all
- 8:46Speaker 2: shoot up grappling hook guns and they're all going up.
- 8:49Speaker 1: I don't know why.
- 8:50Speaker 2: I specifically remember that moment when I was like, I
- 8:53Speaker 2: don't care about any of these people. I'm not rooting
- 8:56Speaker 2: for them. I don't care. And I, I, I was
- 9:00Speaker 2: feeling skittish with Jar Jar from the beginning, but I
- 9:03Speaker 2: was thinking like, well, maybe it's just me.
- 9:06Speaker 7: That was like early on. I remember having a weird like, ugh.
- 9:10Speaker 2: But for some reason, it's that moment where you see
- 9:12Speaker 2: him from the back and they're all ascending at the
- 9:15Speaker 2: same time. And I just, I was out. And for
- 9:20Speaker 2: whatever reason, that scene stays with me as the moment
- 9:22Speaker 2: where I was like, okay. And that's really towards the end.
- 9:25Speaker 2: I was really wanting to like it. I was really,
- 9:30Speaker 2: really wanting to look at it.
- 9:31Speaker 7: Again, though, when I think back on it, I'm like,
- 9:34Speaker 7: it doesn't feel like a Star Wars movie. Especially Phantom Menace.
- 9:38Speaker 7: At least three kind of gets close.
- 9:41Speaker 2: Why does Episode VII feel like a Star Wars movie?
- 9:44Speaker 2: And not because it recycled the new.
- 9:46Speaker 7: I think a lot of it really is the feel
- 9:49Speaker 7: of it. The physical... Again... Everything about it, almost, is
- 9:53Speaker 7: a real thing. He built real sets. There's people in
- 9:56Speaker 7: latex masks sitting next to you, you know? I'm like
- 10:00Speaker 7: there's a handful of CG but I'm like a lot
- 10:03Speaker 7: of that stuff is really there and I'm like that
- 10:06Speaker 7: goes back to 77 and like Lucas didn't have any
- 10:09Speaker 7: way out there was not even blue screen that he
- 10:12Speaker 7: also made up it was nothing but we need to
- 10:15Speaker 7: figure out a way to make this stuff work and
- 10:18Speaker 7: like did it and like it's a very real world
- 10:22Speaker 7: that that first one exists in and you get to
- 10:25Speaker 7: episode one and none of that is there literally two
- 10:28Speaker 7: and three there is not a physical shot ever in
- 10:31Speaker 7: the movie.
- 10:31Speaker 2: You know i think another thing episode one because you
- 10:34Speaker 2: were talking about this earlier when you think about it
- 10:36Speaker 2: it's all about no nobility it's the nobility who are
- 10:40Speaker 2: having this fight And the Jedi's are the highest caste system.
- 10:45Speaker 7: And the Queen.
- 10:45Speaker 2: Don't forget the Queen. And so the noble warrior monks
- 10:49Speaker 2: are coming to help the Queen get back into power.
- 10:53Speaker 2: And it's like none of it is really relatable. Okay, yeah,
- 10:57Speaker 2: you got little Anakin as a slave or whatever, but
- 11:00Speaker 2: he joins the warrior class.
- 11:02Speaker 7: He gets recruited by the monks.
- 11:04Speaker 2: Yeah, and they're all impressed with him because he's so...
- 11:08Speaker 2: got this stuff inside of him that makes him the
- 11:11Speaker 2: higher caste, they're going to take him away. They're not
- 11:13Speaker 2: going to save anybody else out of slavery.
- 11:16Speaker 7: Including his mother.
- 11:17Speaker 2: But they're going to take this guy because he has
- 11:19Speaker 2: the mark of being in this higher caste.
- 11:20Speaker 7: And because they can use him. He's the chosen one.
- 11:23Speaker 7: He's going to save us and bring right to the
- 11:26Speaker 7: universe so we can use him, bring that kid with us.
- 11:29Speaker 2: And then flash forward to episode seven, and it's like
- 11:32Speaker 2: ordinary people. You've got Poe and Finn. They're trying to
- 11:35Speaker 2: figure out how to fly a TIE fighter, and they're
- 11:36Speaker 2: getting excited about it. They're like, I can't believe that
- 11:38Speaker 2: actually worked. What's your name? I don't really have a name.
- 11:41Speaker 2: I'm going to call you Finn. Hey, I like it.
- 11:45Speaker 2: It isn't any of this, we must pray that diplomacy
- 11:48Speaker 2: will help us more with this startling event. You know,
- 11:52Speaker 2: it was real guys doing real stuff.
- 11:55Speaker 7: On the front line? Yeah. A poor kid stuck on
- 11:57Speaker 7: another damn desert planet. That's another thing that was nice
- 12:00Speaker 7: that we didn't, because when I first saw that trailer
- 12:03Speaker 7: for episode seven, I was like, are we back on Tatooine?
- 12:06Speaker 2: That's what I thought.
- 12:06Speaker 7: If we were back on that damn planet again, I'm like,
- 12:09Speaker 7: every movie, like, they never get away from it. Like,
- 12:12Speaker 7: Empire's the only one we're not there for. At some
- 12:16Speaker 7: point again, I'm like, there have to be more. That's the,
- 12:19Speaker 7: I mean, in the Lucas run universe, there are so
- 12:23Speaker 7: many ridiculous coincidences that I'm like, there's still a little
- 12:29Speaker 7: in seven, but it's forgivable kind of stuff. And it's
- 12:33Speaker 7: like nods to the old one, not like, well, this
- 12:37Speaker 7: is freaking crazy, but won't it be cool when we
- 12:39Speaker 7: tie these together?
- 12:41Speaker 8: Well, so, and again, uh, The coincidences are more forgiving
- 12:47Speaker 8: if the ride is fun.
- 12:48Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 12:48Speaker 8: It's when the ride is not fun where you're like,
- 12:51Speaker 8: so how did Han happen to stumble across them in
- 12:55Speaker 8: the Millennium Falcon?
- 12:56Speaker 7: See, now that I was okay with because he explained it.
- 12:58Speaker 7: He said that he was looking for it.
- 12:59Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 12:59Speaker 7: He had, like, they were tracking. Like, that one, the
- 13:02Speaker 7: one that was, like, kind of a big jump is, like, okay,
- 13:05Speaker 7: of any place in the universe that got taken there,
- 13:08Speaker 7: and she happened to run into that ship, and they're
- 13:12Speaker 7: looking for Luke Skywalker.
- 13:14Speaker 8: I'm fine with that. I obviously don't remember the line
- 13:18Speaker 8: of dialogue, but we've been looking for it.
- 13:20Speaker 7: No, he specifically said they were tracking that ship.
- 13:23Speaker 8: So that takes that off my list of complaints.
- 13:25Speaker 2: By the way, think about it. We've had close to
- 13:29Speaker 2: 40 years of thinking about the original Star Wars. I
- 13:32Speaker 2: just saw it on Saturday, so there's a lot that
- 13:34Speaker 2: I'm forgetting.
- 13:35Speaker 8: So the only other.
- 13:39Speaker 8: I agree that the last third of the movie plays
- 13:43Speaker 8: pretty fast and loose with things. And my biggest complaint,
- 13:48Speaker 8: like the trench run, which was all of maybe 30 seconds.
- 13:52Speaker 8: So people are like, oh, there's a trench run. Yeah,
- 13:55Speaker 8: for like, trenches exist in architecture. And yes, if you
- 14:00Speaker 8: fly a long one, it's not a trench run. It's
- 14:02Speaker 8: just you move along the low part of the land.
- 14:05Speaker 8: And we've kind of seen that before.
- 14:08Speaker 2: But this was a trenchier... The only.
- 14:11Speaker 8: The biggest thing, I guess... Well, I have two complaints
- 14:14Speaker 8: about the movie. I had three, but I'll forgive the.
- 14:17Speaker 2: I have two.
- 14:18Speaker 6: Okay.
- 14:18Speaker 7: That was in the dialogue.
- 14:20Speaker 8: Fair enough. Again, I missed it.
- 14:23Speaker 4: Is.
- 14:24Speaker 8: So, in an entire planet-sized thing of the enemy, you're
- 14:29Speaker 8: going to run across your captain who happens to have
- 14:33Speaker 8: the code to disable the shield.
- 14:37Speaker 1: Just.
- 14:37Speaker 8: Boom!
- 14:37Speaker 4: Boom!
- 14:38Speaker 8: I know, we have a plan. Oh, there's Captain Phasma.
- 14:41Speaker 8: Turn down the shields.
- 14:43Speaker 7: Don't get me wrong.
- 14:45Speaker 8: Anything you can get Gwendolyn Christie to have screen time in,
- 14:48Speaker 8: I'm fine with. But that one was just like, that's
- 14:51Speaker 8: a little too coincidental.
- 14:53Speaker 2: Side question. They made a big deal. We got Gwendolyn
- 14:56Speaker 2: Christie in Game of Thrones. Everyone loves her. She didn't
- 14:59Speaker 2: take off her hat. Do you think it was wasted?
- 15:02Speaker 7: I think it's set up. It is set up.
- 15:06Speaker 8: She has a bigger role to play.
- 15:06Speaker 2: She didn't die?
- 15:07Speaker 8: Probably not.
- 15:10Speaker 2: You didn't see her die on screen.
- 15:13Speaker 8: Because that planet got blowed up.
- 15:14Speaker 7: They specifically said get the other guys out. So I'm
- 15:16Speaker 7: sure they got her. She was the only other one in.
- 15:18Speaker 2: A cool outfit.
- 15:19Speaker 8: I am extremely forgiving about that for a couple reasons. One,
- 15:22Speaker 8: because they cast her. They didn't say, and she's got
- 15:27Speaker 8: a huge role. They just said we cast Gwendolyn Christie.
- 15:32Speaker 8: So the internet jumped on it. It was like, oh,
- 15:34Speaker 8: my God, you had a male role that you turned
- 15:36Speaker 8: into a female role, and you got awesome Gwendolyn Christie. Yay,
- 15:39Speaker 8: she's going to be awesome. Where was she in the movie?
- 15:43Speaker 8: The internet set themselves up for that letdown.
- 15:46Speaker 7: That's what they do.
- 15:46Speaker 5: Okay.
- 15:47Speaker 1: You know?
- 15:48Speaker 7: To me, I like that.
- 15:49Speaker 2: That could have been any seven-foot blonde lady.
- 15:51Speaker 7: Because that just builds up. the fact that they're not
- 15:55Speaker 7: just making a one-off dumb movie. Like, they have a plan.
- 15:59Speaker 8: You know, it's sort of like the internet didn't blow
- 16:01Speaker 8: up about Daniel Craig being a stormtrooper. You know, so
- 16:04Speaker 8: they're like, you misused Daniel Craig by having him just
- 16:07Speaker 8: be a stormtrooper. Why couldn't he have been? To me,
- 16:10Speaker 8: that was the internet getting their panties in a twist
- 16:13Speaker 8: like they often do about something that they made a
- 16:15Speaker 8: big deal, but the filmmakers didn't make a big deal
- 16:18Speaker 8: about at all.
- 16:19Speaker 7: If you want to nitpick, like, Luke Skywalker's not really
- 16:23Speaker 7: in the movie. I'm like, they built this whole thing
- 16:25Speaker 7: of like the whole cast is coming back. I'm like, yeah,
- 16:28Speaker 7: he showed up. But I'm like, if you wanted to
- 16:31Speaker 7: be one of those kind of pissy people, like, well,
- 16:34Speaker 7: I can't believe Luke wouldn't in it. But I'm like,
- 16:36Speaker 7: to me, it's showing that they're not telling this one story.
- 16:39Speaker 7: They have a big plan. Again, we've learned from all
- 16:43Speaker 7: these other movies that, you know, you, you watch, uh, what,
- 16:46Speaker 7: you know, the Marvel Universe is doing, or you watch
- 16:48Speaker 7: what the Lord of the Rings is doing, it's like,
- 16:50Speaker 7: they have a huge story to tell, and they're trying
- 16:53Speaker 7: to pace it out, that they're not cramming everything into
- 16:56Speaker 7: one movie, they are showing you, we've got a plan,
- 17:00Speaker 7: and it's laid out, and we've just set the pieces
- 17:03Speaker 7: into motion for what could be several more movies with
- 17:06Speaker 7: this cast. We know at least two more, but I'd
- 17:09Speaker 7: be glad to see several of those people just continue on,
- 17:12Speaker 7: and if if they're well made, I would watch those
- 17:15Speaker 7: characters for years to come.
- 17:16Speaker 8: So again, I, I'm fine with her use. I was
- 17:20Speaker 8: just a little let down by the, I don't have
- 17:23Speaker 8: a plan. Oh no, I do have a plan. There
- 17:26Speaker 8: she is. Turn off the shield. That just seemed way.
- 17:28Speaker 7: Do we think he knew where she would be? Cause
- 17:32Speaker 7: he was there.
- 17:34Speaker 8: He said, he said his job was, was sanitation. So
- 17:37Speaker 8: how's he going to know? Well, if that's the case,
- 17:39Speaker 8: well then why was he on the raid to begin with?
- 17:41Speaker 8: But whatever, but, but, That one just seemed way too crap.
- 17:47Speaker 8: As a story writer, I've got to get that shield off. Okay,
- 17:51Speaker 8: here we go.
- 17:52Speaker 7: Again, there's a.
- 17:53Speaker 8: I would rather they stand on a pillar and they
- 17:56Speaker 8: turn the little knob and the tractor.
- 17:58Speaker 7: Beam goes down.
- 18:00Speaker 8: That just seemed like we had a plot point that
- 18:04Speaker 8: we needed to get to. Here's how we're going.
- 18:06Speaker 6: To get to it.
- 18:07Speaker 7: And again, I felt like that... And again, it's mostly
- 18:10Speaker 7: in that last third of the movie. There are a
- 18:11Speaker 7: lot of those... And this is what we do in
- 18:14Speaker 7: this kind of Star Wars movie. Like, we need, did
- 18:18Speaker 7: we already not have, well, there's a shield protecting this
- 18:21Speaker 7: Death Star-y thing, so we gotta break down the shield
- 18:24Speaker 7: so that we can destroy the Death Star-y thing. Is
- 18:27Speaker 7: that not Return of the Jedi? Like, that's exactly the
- 18:29Speaker 7: whole premise of the last half of Return of the Jedi.
- 18:32Speaker 7: So I'm like, again, we're kind of just drawing off
- 18:34Speaker 7: a very familiar situation there. kind of forgive it because, again,
- 18:39Speaker 7: it has no weight. I feel like that whole last battle,
- 18:43Speaker 7: if you want to call it that, has no real
- 18:45Speaker 7: weight to it. There's no danger to it where, again,
- 18:49Speaker 7: you watch that episode four Death Star battle. People are dying.
- 18:55Speaker 7: You really don't know if Luke's going to live through
- 18:57Speaker 7: the thing.
- 18:58Speaker 8: And they show, here's the gas giant. Here's the moon.
- 19:02Speaker 8: Here's the Death Star.
- 19:03Speaker 1: Doot, doot.
- 19:06Speaker 7: It's building tension.
- 19:07Speaker 8: We're getting to the point. And that leads into my
- 19:11Speaker 8: other main complaint about the movie. So this group has
- 19:16Speaker 8: built a multi-planet killing device. And you see them use it.
- 19:23Speaker 8: And all they say is, the Republic is making a
- 19:26Speaker 8: vote on something. Fire the weapon. What was the vote on?
- 19:30Speaker 8: So they had six planets get destroyed, but they never
- 19:34Speaker 8: really say other than it's the bad republic.
- 19:38Speaker 2: That wasn't Coruscant that blew up, was it? I don't
- 19:41Speaker 2: think so. I don't know.
- 19:43Speaker 7: Again, there's no weight to that. When Alderaan gets destroyed,
- 19:47Speaker 7: that's a big deal in that movie. They knock out six.
- 19:50Speaker 7: planets here, and we're like, anyway, next scene.
- 19:53Speaker 2: I felt... Alderaan, to me, blowing up, felt very... Ugh.
- 19:59Speaker 2: Because I had never been there. I had never seen
- 20:01Speaker 2: anything about it.
- 20:02Speaker 8: But at least you see that's where she's from.
- 20:05Speaker 2: Leah's not that upset about it.
- 20:08Speaker 8: Well, she gets... And then you immediately cut to the
- 20:11Speaker 8: scene of Ben's like....
- 20:14Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 20:15Speaker 7: He feels the way... Again, it carries something like nobody
- 20:18Speaker 7: felt the way it does.
- 20:18Speaker 8: So, Otteron wasn't important as a planet. It was important
- 20:21Speaker 8: as a... Look what they just did to an entire planet.
- 20:24Speaker 7: That was my thing.
- 20:25Speaker 8: It gave it scale.
- 20:27Speaker 2: But the thing I liked about Episode 7 was they
- 20:29Speaker 2: show the planet and they show the people seeing the
- 20:31Speaker 2: death ray coming at them and they're freaking out. I
- 20:33Speaker 2: felt it a little bit more.
- 20:34Speaker 8: Right, but who were those people? Why did they pick
- 20:37Speaker 8: those planets to destroy? That was the thing.
- 20:39Speaker 2: There's not really an explanation on any of that. Well, okay, yeah,
- 20:41Speaker 2: because they... I kind of had to think about it
- 20:44Speaker 2: in my head. I didn't really get.
- 20:47Speaker 2: I didn't know if the First Order was a government
- 20:51Speaker 2: or if it was just a cult. And they said
- 20:56Speaker 2: that the Republic, that the New Republic was there. So
- 21:00Speaker 2: if the First Order was a cult inside of the
- 21:04Speaker 2: New Republic, why would there be a resistance? Why wouldn't
- 21:09Speaker 2: it be the.
- 21:11Speaker 7: The Republic's military fighting them.
- 21:14Speaker 2: And then I began to think maybe the First Order
- 21:16Speaker 2: is a government that is next.
- 21:19Speaker 9: To the Republic.
- 21:21Speaker 2: Moving in on the Republic. And the Resistance is the
- 21:24Speaker 2: systems that are inside of the territory that is controlled
- 21:28Speaker 2: by the First Order.
- 21:29Speaker 8: So there is a whole backstory to that. Which they
- 21:32Speaker 8: are being.
- 21:33Speaker 2: And I think there was a line in there that
- 21:35Speaker 2: the Resistance is being funded by... By the new republic.
- 21:38Speaker 4: Yes, yes.
- 21:39Speaker 2: So it's sort of like when America gives guns to
- 21:42Speaker 2: rebels to topple a dictator somewhere. But they didn't really
- 21:46Speaker 2: make that clear.
- 21:47Speaker 7: Yeah, they don't spell any of this out.
- 21:49Speaker 2: What I'm worried about is there's all these spinoff novels,
- 21:54Speaker 2: spinoff comics, spinoff games, and I've been hearing how a
- 21:58Speaker 2: lot of stuff that sets up this new.
- 22:05Speaker 2: Status quo for episode seven is established and explained in
- 22:09Speaker 2: a lot of these spinoff media. And I'm like, I
- 22:11Speaker 2: don't want to read 20 kids books to try to
- 22:13Speaker 2: figure out what the government situation is.
- 22:15Speaker 8: Well, I think that's the good and bad about these
- 22:18Speaker 8: larger stories is that, which is why, like I said,
- 22:24Speaker 8: I think it is a great Star Wars movie because
- 22:27Speaker 8: you don't need to know that. If you just switch
- 22:29Speaker 8: it off and watch it.
- 22:31Speaker 7: That's what I think they learned from the prequels. Prequels
- 22:33Speaker 7: did nothing but explain shit that nobody cared about.
- 22:36Speaker 8: You know, and so it is just sort of, I
- 22:39Speaker 8: think it's something that we're going to have to get
- 22:41Speaker 8: used to as a society of we can't have all
- 22:44Speaker 8: the nuts and bolts told to us in a story. So,
- 22:48Speaker 8: you know, because I was a big fan of the
- 22:50Speaker 8: Halo franchise video game. and there was a mountain of
- 22:54Speaker 8: material that wasn't in the game that made the universe awesome,
- 22:57Speaker 8: but you didn't get a lot of that in the games. Now,
- 23:00Speaker 8: as the games progressed, they've gotten to where you need
- 23:03Speaker 8: to know a lot of that extra stuff to appreciate it,
- 23:07Speaker 8: and honestly, the games have started to suck because of that.
- 23:10Speaker 8: So you walk a fine line between, I want to
- 23:13Speaker 8: tell these huge stories, but I can't tell it in
- 23:16Speaker 8: two hours, so I'm going to have to layer all
- 23:18Speaker 8: this stuff around it And hope that if you're really
- 23:22Speaker 8: interested in it, then you consume the extra stuff.
- 23:25Speaker 7: That's what I'm hoping is they, again, they've learned that
- 23:28Speaker 7: from the prequels. Don't overload us with stuff we don't
- 23:30Speaker 7: care about. But at the same time, hopefully they're smart.
- 23:35Speaker 7: And again, Marvel and Disney as a whole has been
- 23:38Speaker 7: pretty smart about doing this in the way that they
- 23:40Speaker 7: run that universe. Like each one kind of, like the
- 23:43Speaker 7: Marvel examples, each one kind of exists on its own.
- 23:46Speaker 7: if you want to put them all in there, again,
- 23:48Speaker 7: I think that's the smart way to do it. If
- 23:50Speaker 7: you want to just be like, I just like this movie.
- 23:53Speaker 7: I just want to watch this movie. I just want
- 23:54Speaker 7: to see this Star Wars. They do a pretty good
- 23:56Speaker 7: job in this of, these are the good guys. Look
- 23:59Speaker 7: how good they are. These are the bad guys. They're
- 24:00Speaker 7: pretty evil. And like, you can take it at that.
- 24:03Speaker 7: If you want to be a super geek and go
- 24:05Speaker 7: read six novels and find out more about it, that's
- 24:07Speaker 7: an option too.
- 24:08Speaker 2: And honestly, pointing out again, I've only seen it one time.
- 24:11Speaker 2: I haven't had 38 years to study every single line.
- 24:15Speaker 2: There may be a line in there that explains it,
- 24:18Speaker 2: and I just didn't hear it.
- 24:20Speaker 7: It's still pretty light.
- 24:22Speaker 8: It's light on it.
- 24:23Speaker 2: The opening crawl may explain it, and I just didn't
- 24:28Speaker 2: really get it.
- 24:28Speaker 8: I thought that it would, but it was all about
- 24:31Speaker 8: Luke Skywalker is missing. It was all about this hunt
- 24:34Speaker 8: for Luke Skywalker, and nothing about how the status quo
- 24:37Speaker 8: had changed.
- 24:37Speaker 2: Which is all you need to know, to be honest,
- 24:39Speaker 2: for the movie to work.
- 24:41Speaker 7: It does make me, because that's the thing, they don't
- 24:42Speaker 7: ever really explain... not only who the First Order is,
- 24:47Speaker 7: but where exactly did they come from? And what are
- 24:51Speaker 7: their motives? What are they trying to do that's different
- 24:54Speaker 7: than the Empire? Why are they not just the Empire?
- 24:56Speaker 7: Or leftover pieces, which they kind of are.
- 25:00Speaker 2: I think I heard this from.
- 25:04Speaker 2: I don't think it was Abrams, but I don't know.
- 25:05Speaker 2: It was sort of like, after World War II, the
- 25:09Speaker 2: Nazis fled to Argentina.
- 25:12Speaker 4: Um.
- 25:13Speaker 2: And they were like, well, what if the Nazis took
- 25:15Speaker 2: over Argentina and established a new presence there? So basically
- 25:19Speaker 2: the First Order are in space Argentina. And the Resistance
- 25:23Speaker 2: are the people that were living in space Argentina that
- 25:26Speaker 2: got taken over by the First Order. And the Republic,
- 25:30Speaker 2: you know, the U.S. are like, hey, we don't like this.
- 25:32Speaker 2: So we're going to send Iran-Contra guns to the Resistance.
- 25:37Speaker 7: Here's my question.
- 25:38Speaker 8: I mean, actually, no, I think that's actually what it is.
- 25:40Speaker 7: That's not bad.
- 25:41Speaker 8: Yeah, that's close to what the thing is.
- 25:43Speaker 7: I think my question is, because again, it just stems
- 25:46Speaker 7: from all of this, is then what was the rebellion?
- 25:51Speaker 7: So did they then, when, okay, we destroyed the emperor,
- 25:54Speaker 7: the empire falls, blah, blah, whatever, did they then graduate
- 25:57Speaker 7: up to, okay, now we're the government, we are the
- 26:00Speaker 7: new republic? And if so... what happened then? Like, where
- 26:05Speaker 7: did the rebellion that became the resistance, did they like
- 26:08Speaker 7: go away because they were the legit government at that point?
- 26:12Speaker 7: Or has it always been there?
- 26:14Speaker 2: I really think the resistance is separate. And the only reason,
- 26:19Speaker 2: and I thought I heard this said, tell me if
- 26:21Speaker 2: I'm wrong. The only reason Princess Leia is there with
- 26:25Speaker 2: the resistance is because, um, Do you remember, yeah. Do
- 26:31Speaker 2: you remember when, well, yeah, it's because she's not a
- 26:33Speaker 2: princess because she's not in her home turf. Which is destroyed, technically.
- 26:38Speaker 2: Her and Han Solo, you know, when they kind of
- 26:41Speaker 2: meet and they're talking again, they talk about how Luke
- 26:45Speaker 2: was trying to start a new Jedi class.
- 26:49Speaker 7: Hopefully a less sucky one.
- 26:50Speaker 2: Their son turned on him and Han and Leia dealt
- 26:54Speaker 2: with it in different ways. Han specifically said we both
- 26:57Speaker 2: dealt with it in different ways. He went back to
- 26:59Speaker 2: the only thing that he was good at. And Leia said,
- 27:02Speaker 2: I did too. The only thing that I was good
- 27:04Speaker 2: at was being a rebel.
- 27:07Speaker 7: A freedom fighter.
- 27:08Speaker 2: So she probably left the Republic to go to find
- 27:12Speaker 2: the resistance to offer her services. Kind of like what...
- 27:15Speaker 2: There was a lot of people... The Spanish Civil War.
- 27:19Speaker 2: There was a lot of people from this country who
- 27:21Speaker 2: were just going there like to help fight, you know,
- 27:24Speaker 2: and I think that's what Leia was doing. So, so
- 27:27Speaker 2: the Republic is, is still there. The, the new Republic
- 27:31Speaker 2: that was established when the empire fell, that is still there.
- 27:34Speaker 2: This is again, space Arjun, the Tina that she's going to.
- 27:38Speaker 7: Then my question became again, just today trying to figure
- 27:41Speaker 7: all this out. I'm like, so then what is the
- 27:43Speaker 7: timeframe on this? So like, but I mean, I know
- 27:46Speaker 7: it's 30, but I'm like, so what is the timeframe
- 27:48Speaker 7: on this? this like the the first order coming about
- 27:52Speaker 7: and this new thing because like when did that start
- 27:56Speaker 7: yeah because it's got to be at least because i
- 27:58Speaker 7: mean that between our two younger characters it's been a
- 28:02Speaker 7: good portion of their life like that's all that she
- 28:04Speaker 7: knows is just the way that this is and the
- 28:07Speaker 7: rebellion is like legend and luke and and han's antics
- 28:11Speaker 7: are legends i mean that's You're talking a good 10,
- 28:15Speaker 7: 15 years, right? I mean, it's got to be for
- 28:17Speaker 7: it to be worked out of that next generation almost completely.
- 28:20Speaker 8: So here's what I understand about the history. So Emperor dies.
- 28:27Speaker 8: The Empire sort of shatters because all the Moffs and
- 28:31Speaker 8: all the local commanders sort of take control of their
- 28:34Speaker 8: system since there is no overarching Emperor anymore. Mon Motha
- 28:39Speaker 8: founds who is the lady in Return of the Jedi. Yeah.
- 28:44Speaker 8: They then consolidate the rebellion. They fight certain battles. They
- 28:50Speaker 8: start a new republic on a different planet that's not Coruscant.
- 28:55Speaker 2: Oh, I didn't know that.
- 28:56Speaker 7: Okay.
- 28:56Speaker 8: And I think that's the planet that got destroyed.
- 29:00Speaker 2: In this one?
- 29:00Speaker 8: In this one.
- 29:01Speaker 2: Oh, I really want to know.
- 29:02Speaker 8: Well, and again, that's the part where I'm like, I
- 29:05Speaker 8: just saw a bunch of planets get killed.
- 29:06Speaker 7: Why do I care?
- 29:07Speaker 2: Because the dominant Gleeson general bad guy, he was saying
- 29:11Speaker 2: how the Senate will never vote on this after today,
- 29:15Speaker 2: and then they charge.
- 29:15Speaker 8: Because we blow them up.
- 29:16Speaker 2: So was that the New Republic capital planet?
- 29:20Speaker 8: And so what happens is that Mon Motha as the
- 29:22Speaker 8: New Republic, they say, we're not going to have a military.
- 29:25Speaker 8: So they do not have a military. And I think
- 29:29Speaker 8: they shovel all that off on the resistance side. And
- 29:32Speaker 8: then I think Akbar is allowed to keep a fleet,
- 29:35Speaker 8: but all the sort of military is left to the
- 29:37Speaker 8: small systems to keep. governance on themselves militarily.
- 29:41Speaker 2: Seems like a bad idea.
- 29:42Speaker 7: Well, so what.
- 29:43Speaker 8: Happens is all the empires shatters and they fight, then
- 29:49Speaker 8: a bunch of them manage to get together and make
- 29:51Speaker 8: one final push, and that's what happened in the Battle
- 29:54Speaker 8: of Jocka, which is why all that stuff is there. Right, right.
- 29:58Speaker 8: akbar and his consolidated fleet have a decisive battle at
- 30:01Speaker 8: jaca against the remnants of the empire and so the
- 30:04Speaker 8: empire is gone some of them then go way out
- 30:08Speaker 8: to the edge to argentina um and form the first
- 30:11Speaker 8: order or the new order.
- 30:13Speaker 2: Because they're trying to bring back and and they're obsessing
- 30:18Speaker 2: with like just their Uniform designs and everything.
- 30:23Speaker 8: And so they're supposedly out on the fringe, okay, building
- 30:27Speaker 8: up and whatever. And that's what I found confusing was,
- 30:31Speaker 8: did they shoot from the fringe all the way into
- 30:35Speaker 8: the center of the New Republic? Was that... Did their
- 30:38Speaker 8: weapon go that far?
- 30:39Speaker 7: That is a super-duper death star.
- 30:41Speaker 8: Or did they fly it in? And if they did,
- 30:43Speaker 8: well then, who the fuck's giant... thing is that?
- 30:47Speaker 7: Didn't you see that thing coming at you?
- 30:49Speaker 2: With the Death Star, you could pilot it to whatever
- 30:52Speaker 2: system you wanted.
- 30:53Speaker 8: But you could because you controlled all the systems. The
- 30:57Speaker 8: fact that you were flying your giant battle station through
- 31:00Speaker 8: was like you couldn't say no to it. So how
- 31:04Speaker 8: did it fire all that distance? Because then it had
- 31:08Speaker 8: to get, I guess, to wherever the new Rebel base
- 31:11Speaker 8: was because it was going to blow it up too.
- 31:13Speaker 8: Did they fly it or is it shooting from way
- 31:15Speaker 8: out on the edge of the The universe.
- 31:17Speaker 2: Where are they like, okay, our orbit is going to
- 31:20Speaker 2: put us in range of the new Rebel base in, oh, March.
- 31:24Speaker 2: So we got to wait.
- 31:25Speaker 8: Well, and again, now don't get me wrong. I'm not
- 31:29Speaker 8: trying to nitpick physics of that.
- 31:31Speaker 2: It's going to happen. Just let it happen.
- 31:34Speaker 8: But I found that a little sad because like geographically,
- 31:37Speaker 8: if you were looking at a map of the galaxy,
- 31:40Speaker 8: I didn't know where any of this stuff was going on.
- 31:42Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 31:43Speaker 2: Maybe a Lord of the Rings-esque map would have helped.
- 31:48Speaker 8: And again, this is showing my fandom, Game of Thrones
- 31:51Speaker 8: does it right. Each episode starts out with, here's a map,
- 31:56Speaker 8: and we're going to tell you a story here. And here,
- 31:59Speaker 8: and here. So you know geographically where everything takes place. Now,
- 32:03Speaker 8: in Star Wars, it was always point A to point
- 32:06Speaker 8: B to point C.
- 32:07Speaker 7: I was going to say, I don't really remember having
- 32:09Speaker 7: a good sense of things in the old ones.
- 32:10Speaker 8: But you didn't need to.
- 32:11Speaker 7: But they were far away. He had to lightspeed it
- 32:13Speaker 7: every time.
- 32:14Speaker 8: And again, you were also dealing with the Empire was
- 32:17Speaker 8: the dominant group. So the fact that they were moving
- 32:20Speaker 8: their battle station from system to.
- 32:22Speaker 1: System, okay, fine.
- 32:24Speaker 8: Whereas this is the fringe group, and did the terrorists
- 32:28Speaker 8: on the fringe just nuke the Capitol?
- 32:31Speaker 1: Right.
- 32:31Speaker 2: Way in the center, yeah.
- 32:33Speaker 7: Shouldn't some powers that be in these systems have seen
- 32:36Speaker 7: that coming? Aren't they doing intel? Like, shouldn't they know
- 32:39Speaker 7: what they're up to?
- 32:40Speaker 8: And again, I'm being real super geeky nitpicky.
- 32:44Speaker 7: That's why we're here.
- 32:44Speaker 8: But it's sort of, it spawned from the fact that
- 32:47Speaker 8: the whole, this, this, the Senate that was voting just
- 32:51Speaker 8: got whacked out of nowhere. Like no one saw it
- 32:54Speaker 8: coming and not just that planet, but I guessing every
- 32:57Speaker 8: planet in that system got whacked.
- 32:59Speaker 2: I did like how it kind of divided.
- 33:01Speaker 7: No, that was awesome.
- 33:02Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 33:03Speaker 8: But, but, and so the other nitpicky thing is, so
- 33:08Speaker 8: they were on the planet with Maz Kanata looking up
- 33:11Speaker 8: and they see all the planets getting whacked.
- 33:14Speaker 4: Right.
- 33:15Speaker 8: I'm glad they didn't target that planet.
- 33:18Speaker 7: End of movie.
- 33:19Speaker 8: And then, like, 30 minutes later, the Empire arrives. So
- 33:22Speaker 8: did they have a ship just near the planet?
- 33:25Speaker 2: Well, you know, this was a long, long, long time ago,
- 33:27Speaker 2: and the universe expands. So maybe back then, everything was
- 33:31Speaker 2: closer together.
- 33:34Speaker 8: You know, so again, I'm being super nitpicky about how
- 33:36Speaker 8: things get from A to B, but it is sort of,
- 33:38Speaker 8: you know, the.
- 33:42Speaker 8: The engineer in me can't be like, and suddenly the
- 33:45Speaker 8: enemy shows up on your back step and raids your planet.
- 33:48Speaker 4: Hey!
- 33:49Speaker 7: Again, I feel like a lot of that is so
- 33:52Speaker 7: glossed over. I so didn't pay attention to any of that,
- 33:56Speaker 7: and maybe because I didn't care that much, because I
- 33:59Speaker 7: was way more invested in our main characters, so I
- 34:02Speaker 7: didn't get super bogged down in it. But again, I
- 34:04Speaker 7: feel like Before, I had a sense of what was
- 34:07Speaker 7: going on in that first battle in Star Wars.
- 34:10Speaker 2: Just think about back to our Suncoast days. Every Sunday,
- 34:13Speaker 2: we would play original Empire and Jedi. You know, we've
- 34:19Speaker 2: had years and years to work out theories of why
- 34:22Speaker 2: things are working the way they are.
- 34:24Speaker 7: Most of which are wrong, by the way.
- 34:25Speaker 2: And, you know, this is all going to be fleshed out,
- 34:27Speaker 2: I'm sure, by us, probably.
- 34:30Speaker 8: For the rest of our lives. That's why I say,
- 34:32Speaker 8: hands down, it was a great Star Wars movie.
- 34:35Speaker 9: It was.
- 34:36Speaker 2: Maybe that's what made it all so good is because
- 34:39Speaker 2: you're left with all these technical questions of like, yeah,
- 34:42Speaker 2: how does a ship make a Kessel Run in the
- 34:44Speaker 2: 12 Parsecs? Well, Parsecs isn't a.
- 34:47Speaker 7: Distance and a slack hole.
- 34:49Speaker 2: Yeah, so it's like maybe they purposely put in all
- 34:51Speaker 2: this weird stuff for the fans to have something to
- 34:55Speaker 2: talk about besides our families.
- 34:57Speaker 1: I don't know.
- 34:58Speaker 8: You know, but there are, again, like three small points
- 35:01Speaker 8: that the real super, I gotta know the layout of
- 35:05Speaker 8: everything is like, eh. But again, unabashedly, great Star Wars movie.
- 35:13Speaker 7: Again, yours is more distance. Mine is time frame that
- 35:16Speaker 7: I have issues with. Is it just me, or does
- 35:19Speaker 7: it seem like the only time these threats pop up
- 35:22Speaker 7: in the Star Wars universe is when the audience checks in?
- 35:26Speaker 7: Because we have, no, seriously, you have Phantom Menace, we
- 35:29Speaker 7: get all this stuff sort of started. We get all
- 35:32Speaker 7: the way to the end of episode three, and they're like,
- 35:35Speaker 7: here's the plans for this Death Star episode. 20 years later,
- 35:39Speaker 7: they build that. It took them 20 years to finally
- 35:42Speaker 7: get that little Death Star up and running.
- 35:44Speaker 2: They didn't have the right screws.
- 35:46Speaker 7: I guess.
- 35:47Speaker 2: It was a problem with labor.
- 35:48Speaker 7: There was a droid with the plans in it, but
- 35:50Speaker 7: he went to sleep for a while, so don't worry
- 35:51Speaker 7: about it. So I'm like, okay, we have this big
- 35:54Speaker 7: jump there of like, okay, they really couldn't get it
- 35:56Speaker 7: together to get that. So, okay, we blow up that
- 35:58Speaker 7: Death Star. Three to six years? Like, it's a pretty
- 36:01Speaker 7: quick turnaround between the end of Star Wars and the
- 36:04Speaker 7: new one almost being... Well, it is battle-ready. At least
- 36:07Speaker 7: it can fire. In a three to six year span,
- 36:10Speaker 7: they turn around and build one four times as big.
- 36:12Speaker 8: They got better.
- 36:13Speaker 7: They obviously learned how to do it from the first one.
- 36:15Speaker 7: But again, that's a pretty quick turnaround there.
- 36:18Speaker 2: Maybe it's because they built the first Death Star in peacetime.
- 36:22Speaker 2: And it took a long time. But by the time...
- 36:24Speaker 2: They're building the second one. It's sort of like they
- 36:26Speaker 2: were planting victory gardens. They were having metal drives. Everyone
- 36:32Speaker 2: was all in on the war effort.
- 36:33Speaker 7: I also heard that they might have started the second
- 36:35Speaker 7: one while they were still... By the time that one
- 36:38Speaker 7: was done, they were already a third of the way
- 36:39Speaker 7: into the new one down the line.
- 36:43Speaker 2: Whatever.
- 36:43Speaker 7: Geek theories.
- 36:44Speaker 2: Can I tell you my.
- 36:46Speaker 7: No, that's my thing. Okay, so now it's 30 years later,
- 36:49Speaker 7: so nothing has happened yet? For these last 30 years.
- 36:53Speaker 7: So we had two Death Stars right next to each other.
- 36:55Speaker 7: But there's a 30-year gap before anybody gets the shit
- 36:58Speaker 7: together to be like, hey, you know what? Let's build
- 37:00Speaker 7: another big thing for them to blow up.
- 37:02Speaker 2: The Empire was shattered, and the First Order.
- 37:04Speaker 7: Was built back up. So nothing else happened? Or are
- 37:08Speaker 7: we going to have side movies that are like, here
- 37:10Speaker 7: was a little minor thing that came about.
- 37:12Speaker 8: It could have been trouble, but.
- 37:13Speaker 7: We took care of it.
- 37:14Speaker 8: We keep getting all these orders for raw metal from
- 37:18Speaker 8: these people on the fringe, and they're really corning the
- 37:20Speaker 8: market on materials. Are they doing something with these?
- 37:24Speaker 2: We're going to meet our yearly quota, yay!
- 37:27Speaker 7: Don't ask questions.
- 37:28Speaker 2: They're buying it.
- 37:29Speaker 7: Just get it to them.
- 37:30Speaker 2: Man, you guys are looking at the big picture stuff.
- 37:32Speaker 2: My biggest gripe was something very specific in the movie. Okay,
- 37:38Speaker 2: you remember the bit where The Kylo Ren kills his dad.
- 37:44Speaker 2: You remember that part. It's funny. We haven't even talked
- 37:46Speaker 2: about that much.
- 37:46Speaker 7: Yeah, that is the huge spoiler, I suppose.
- 37:49Speaker 2: And yet, this whole time, we've been talking about complexion
- 37:52Speaker 2: and parsecs. We're the geeks, man.
- 37:55Speaker 8: I'm not bothered by that scene at all.
- 37:58Speaker 7: I kind of assumed the general idea was coming because
- 38:02Speaker 7: he wanted out in episode six.
- 38:05Speaker 2: That's why they.
- 38:06Speaker 7: Froze him in Empires. He didn't want to come back.
- 38:09Speaker 7: So it's like he's been, again, he spent 30 years
- 38:11Speaker 7: trying to figure out how to get out of this franchise.
- 38:13Speaker 2: But Han dying wasn't the big thing. I was like,
- 38:16Speaker 2: wait a minute. Here's my thing. My biggest complaint about
- 38:21Speaker 2: this movie. Okay.
- 38:22Speaker 7: Kylo kills his dad.
- 38:24Speaker 2: And he's standing on that skinny bridge in that pit
- 38:26Speaker 2: way down below everything else. Rey and Finn see it,
- 38:30Speaker 2: and they're like, no, and they shoot, and then they
- 38:32Speaker 2: run out of the station. Chewie's, no, he shoots him,
- 38:36Speaker 2: hits his detonator. The whole base, that part of the
- 38:39Speaker 2: base is blowed up. The building is collapsing. Finn and
- 38:44Speaker 2: Rey run out. They're in the forest. They're running away,
- 38:47Speaker 2: getting away from the devastation, and then suddenly Kylo Ren
- 38:50Speaker 2: is standing in front of them, How the hell did
- 38:53Speaker 2: that happen? I call shenanigans on that.
- 38:55Speaker 7: Force running?
- 38:57Speaker 2: Force running.
- 38:57Speaker 7: Force running.
- 38:58Speaker 8: Or even better, how did he get off of the
- 39:01Speaker 8: non-OSHA standard causeway?
- 39:03Speaker 7: That's the way the Empire runs, though. They don't have guardrails.
- 39:08Speaker 2: He was on the bridge with no handrails. The building
- 39:13Speaker 2: is falling in on him. He's down below that pit,
- 39:16Speaker 2: and yet he makes it in front of... of Faye
- 39:20Speaker 2: and Wren in the middle of the forest, and he's
- 39:21Speaker 2: not even breathing hard, like he had to run, They
- 39:24Speaker 2: have force running. No, really.
- 39:25Speaker 7: Seriously. How did he do that? But I mean, that is...
- 39:27Speaker 7: I mean, if you believe the prequel nonsense, they have
- 39:30Speaker 7: force jumping and force running.
- 39:31Speaker 2: That honestly was my biggest complaint.
- 39:33Speaker 8: Now, maybe this will make that scene be okay.
- 39:36Speaker 2: Oh, also, how can he run? Because Chewie just shot
- 39:39Speaker 2: him in the ass. He can't run.
- 39:41Speaker 7: I'll give you that. That's a good one.
- 39:42Speaker 2: And whenever he's fighting Rey, he keeps having to hit himself.
- 39:46Speaker 6: Which.
- 39:47Speaker 8: Why was he doing that?
- 39:49Speaker 2: Was he part metal, like part robot?
- 39:53Speaker 8: My idea is that he was doing that to feel
- 39:56Speaker 8: the pain to make himself angrier and stronger.
- 40:01Speaker 7: Again, I also took it as.
- 40:02Speaker 8: And he's a little crazy.
- 40:05Speaker 7: Well, and him being the bratty child and be like,
- 40:08Speaker 7: It's him being upset and throwing it to, and little
- 40:10Speaker 7: kids that get upset and start hitting themselves in the face.
- 40:13Speaker 7: And you're like, these kids need help. No, stop him
- 40:16Speaker 7: from doing that. He's almost that unbalanced. He's hitting himself.
- 40:22Speaker 7: because he can't kill her right now. You know, it's frustration.
- 40:26Speaker 2: Every time he would hit himself, I swear it sounded
- 40:28Speaker 2: like he was slapping something metal.
- 40:30Speaker 1: I mean.
- 40:30Speaker 7: He's more machine than man now.
- 40:32Speaker 2: Has he got metal legs? I don't know, but.
- 40:35Speaker 7: That's the one thing I noticed. We didn't lose limbs, really.
- 40:38Speaker 7: In the old Star Wars franchise, and certainly in the prequels, like,
- 40:42Speaker 7: limbs would just be flying off by the... I mean,
- 40:44Speaker 7: even in Star Wars, like, we get to the bar
- 40:47Speaker 7: and we're already losing limbs on people. So it's like
- 40:49Speaker 7: there was a whole lot of, like, grazing's but not
- 40:52Speaker 7: really limbs being hacked off.
- 40:53Speaker 8: Would it have been too on the nose if she
- 40:55Speaker 8: would have cut off his right hand?
- 40:56Speaker 7: See, that's what I was saying. I was like, I'm
- 40:57Speaker 7: glad they didn't, because I feel like it's so familiar now. Again,
- 41:00Speaker 7: I don't want to see them rip off the previous movie,
- 41:02Speaker 7: so I kind of liked.
- 41:03Speaker 10: It, actually.
- 41:04Speaker 2: Finn got his spine cut out.
- 41:06Speaker 7: Whatever happened to him, I don't know.
- 41:07Speaker 2: It was pretty serious. Seriously, though, do you have a theory?
- 41:09Speaker 2: How did Kylo get out of the burning non-ocean and
- 41:12Speaker 2: get there? It took me out of the moment. It really,
- 41:16Speaker 2: really did.
- 41:18Speaker 8: Again, like I've said, we all draw these funny little
- 41:22Speaker 8: lines that we're not allowed to cross. And I didn't
- 41:25Speaker 8: draw that line.
- 41:26Speaker 2: I didn't care about space geography.
- 41:28Speaker 8: But they lost me on not naming the planet where
- 41:33Speaker 8: they were doing a vote.
- 41:34Speaker 7: See, I just make ties to other movies because was
- 41:37Speaker 7: I the only one that saw him on that little
- 41:40Speaker 7: tiny bridge and I'm like, Now, you didn't die on
- 41:43Speaker 7: that bridge in Temple of Doom, and you're going to
- 41:46Speaker 7: go right back out there. You're going to be eaten
- 41:48Speaker 7: by gators.
- 41:49Speaker 2: Space gators.
- 41:50Speaker 7: Technically crocodiles. But that's not the point. I was like,
- 41:53Speaker 7: I got that exact same thing, though.
- 41:55Speaker 8: So if you want to complain about it, so what
- 41:57Speaker 8: happened to everyone else that got shot with Chewie's bowcaster?
- 42:02Speaker 8: They got thrown like five feet back.
- 42:04Speaker 4: Right.
- 42:04Speaker 8: So here he is on some rinky-dink little walkway. He
- 42:08Speaker 8: takes a hip shot from that boat caster.
- 42:10Speaker 7: He used the force to not get blown away.
- 42:13Speaker 2: Well, I think it's a matter of distance. When Chewie
- 42:15Speaker 2: was shooting everyone else, he was really close to him.
- 42:18Speaker 2: That's not bad.
- 42:21Speaker 8: So where was the impact shot of that one? I mean,
- 42:24Speaker 8: that should have knocked him off the ocean bridge.
- 42:29Speaker 7: Again, that bridge is not a good idea.
- 42:31Speaker 8: The best part about that scene was, again, Chewie's reaction
- 42:36Speaker 8: shot of, fuck you guys. And he goes on the
- 42:41Speaker 8: rip-roaring rampage, just decimating strong divers left and right.
- 42:45Speaker 7: We felt that mostly because of Chewie. Because that's the thing,
- 42:48Speaker 7: I saw him walking out on that bridge, and I'm like,
- 42:50Speaker 7: and the death of Han. There's no way Han's coming
- 42:54Speaker 7: back off that bridge.
- 42:55Speaker 4: There's no way.
- 42:55Speaker 2: And you know, the other thing is, you know, Han
- 42:58Speaker 2: and Han and Chewie, closest friends ever. This was Han's kid.
- 43:03Speaker 2: This was probably Uncle Chewie to this kid. Chewie probably
- 43:08Speaker 2: thought this was that little... He was probably Kylo's god wookie.
- 43:13Speaker 2: You know, he.
- 43:14Speaker 7: He would have to be. He's part of the family.
- 43:17Speaker 2: By the way, this is what I was thinking about.
- 43:19Speaker 2: You know how.
- 43:20Speaker 7: You're going to write the movie God Wookie?
- 43:21Speaker 2: You know how they... Oh yeah, God Wookie. You know
- 43:26Speaker 2: how they love to... Getting back to the marketing, they
- 43:29Speaker 2: have toy sets for everything. Yes, they do. They have
- 43:32Speaker 2: a play set for everything. They have a play set
- 43:34Speaker 2: for swinging over the trench in the Death Star. They
- 43:39Speaker 2: have the play set. Do you think Hasbro is eventually
- 43:42Speaker 2: going to come out with the Han and Leia divorce
- 43:46Speaker 2: court playset with space Perry Mason?
- 43:48Speaker 8: Actually, I'd prefer the Han and Kylo death scene to
- 43:52Speaker 8: where you move the little switch and Kylo stabs his
- 43:55Speaker 8: father with his lightsaber.
- 43:58Speaker 2: The drama you would get in The Haunted Landbreaker.
- 44:02Speaker 7: Well, I have a.
- 44:03Speaker 8: Feeling they never got divorced.
- 44:04Speaker 7: Yeah, that was my thing. It's like they just parted ways.
- 44:07Speaker 2: Your kid's going bad like that.
- 44:10Speaker 7: Because I did feel like there was a moment of,
- 44:13Speaker 7: all right, you're back. And I'm like, so there was
- 44:15Speaker 7: that moment of like, well, now what? Assuming he didn't
- 44:19Speaker 7: get killed, was this the point of like, maybe we'll
- 44:22Speaker 7: give it another shot? You could feel like there's still
- 44:24Speaker 7: chemistry there. And it is that, I do like that
- 44:28Speaker 7: it is that weathered 30 years. You freaking drive me crazy.
- 44:33Speaker 7: But I'm like, that is people we love.
- 44:35Speaker 2: There was a lot of people speculating, were Han and
- 44:39Speaker 2: Leia going to be together still? Were they going to
- 44:41Speaker 2: be broken up? I like That if they were broken up,
- 44:45Speaker 2: it wasn't because she just couldn't stand him or he
- 44:49Speaker 2: thought she was just too snooty. Like, I'm glad that
- 44:52Speaker 2: it wasn't because the honeymoon was over and she was like,
- 44:55Speaker 2: you know what? You are a scoundrel. You ever pick
- 44:57Speaker 2: up your socks, I'm leaving. I'm glad it was something
- 45:00Speaker 2: as monumentally depressing as your kids. turning bad and essentially
- 45:08Speaker 2: losing your child. Yeah. Like, like your son turning into
- 45:11Speaker 2: Jeffrey at Dahmer, that would strain your marriage. Cause basically I.
- 45:15Speaker 7: Will assume he pulled the younglings, right? Because there are
- 45:19Speaker 7: no other Jedi.
- 45:20Speaker 2: I think they said that.
- 45:21Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 45:22Speaker 7: There are no other Jedi's leftover that Luke was training,
- 45:25Speaker 7: helping Luke is the last Jedi.
- 45:28Speaker 1: Now, right.
- 45:28Speaker 2: They said that Kylo killed everyone in this.
- 45:32Speaker 7: Yeah. So I was just like, he was starting. That's
- 45:34Speaker 7: a huge thing to deal with, that, like, your kid's a,
- 45:38Speaker 7: not only now evil, but a mass murderer.
- 45:40Speaker 8: And parents get divorced and separate when a kid goes crazy,
- 45:45Speaker 8: I mean, because they can't handle it together.
- 45:47Speaker 7: Again, if you lose the child, from a certain point
- 45:50Speaker 7: of view, Ben died that day.
- 45:52Speaker 2: I mean, it just.
- 45:53Speaker 7: So just losing a child, a couple ends up divorced
- 45:56Speaker 7: after that.
- 45:57Speaker 2: Sure, they were broken up, but I didn't feel like,
- 45:59Speaker 2: I felt like they still loved each other.
- 46:01Speaker 1: Yeah, definitely.
- 46:02Speaker 2: Because it wasn't something where Han was banging the intern
- 46:07Speaker 2: at the New Republic Congress or whatever. It was something
- 46:10Speaker 2: this big, this heady.
- 46:12Speaker 8: Yeah, and I think it was more of a, they
- 46:14Speaker 8: separated because they both knew that they had to deal
- 46:17Speaker 8: with it in whatever way that they did. Hence the,
- 46:20Speaker 8: I went back to the only thing I was good at.
- 46:22Speaker 7: And hers is probably more of like, I can do
- 46:26Speaker 7: some sort of good. And he's like, I've done the
- 46:29Speaker 7: rebellion thing. I'm done with that. I think hers was
- 46:32Speaker 7: more of like a calling of this is what I do.
- 46:34Speaker 7: I can use this tragedy to try to go and
- 46:37Speaker 7: help people somewhere else and maybe balance out the horrible
- 46:40Speaker 7: things my son has done. Where Han was just more
- 46:43Speaker 7: of back to his old days of like, oh, well,
- 46:45Speaker 7: it's just me and Chewie on the road. Were you guys.
- 46:49Speaker 2: expecting Leah to be more of a Jedi, to be
- 46:53Speaker 2: more trained.
- 46:55Speaker 7: Originally I was, once we get into this story, I guess.
- 47:01Speaker 1: I don't know.
- 47:01Speaker 7: It does seem weird that they didn't go into... Like,
- 47:04Speaker 7: they didn't take it down that road.
- 47:06Speaker 2: Because that was the whole thing in Return of the Jedi.
- 47:08Speaker 2: Luke was telling Leia, you know, you have that power.
- 47:11Speaker 2: You will learn to use it in time, just as
- 47:13Speaker 2: I have. And it seems like she hasn't really gone forward.
- 47:16Speaker 2: Unless she's become a gardener and she uses the Force
- 47:19Speaker 2: for gardening.
- 47:19Speaker 8: Well, and again, I think that... I would like to
- 47:22Speaker 8: think that if you do have this thing, that, you know.
- 47:28Speaker 8: She wasn't conscripted into the Jedi Order as a kid,
- 47:31Speaker 8: so she's free to do with the Force whatever she wants. So, yes,
- 47:34Speaker 8: she is, and I think it sort of shows that
- 47:36Speaker 8: she's in touch with it. So when Han dies, you
- 47:39Speaker 8: see her sort of sit down.
- 47:40Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean, she felt that she knew exactly what happened.
- 47:43Speaker 8: So I have a feeling she uses it, but not
- 47:46Speaker 8: in a trained way.
- 47:48Speaker 7: That a Jedi Knight does. Well, and maybe she just,
- 47:50Speaker 7: from that point, again, kind of how we see Rey.
- 47:53Speaker 2: Just start using it.
- 47:55Speaker 7: Like, maybe it's one of those suddenly her negotiations got
- 47:59Speaker 7: really good and simple.
- 48:01Speaker 2: So you were reading all the spinoff novels back in
- 48:04Speaker 2: the 90s, right?
- 48:05Speaker 8: No, I read the early ones.
- 48:07Speaker 2: Okay. Because I kind of remember, didn't Leia become a Jedi, basically,
- 48:12Speaker 2: in the spinoff novels?
- 48:13Speaker 8: There's a whole bunch of, like, they had three kids.
- 48:16Speaker 8: Heir to the Empire and all that stuff, yeah. And
- 48:19Speaker 8: one of them went bad and two of them didn't.
- 48:21Speaker 8: And then Luke had a kid with some other Imperial
- 48:24Speaker 8: officer that one of them went.
- 48:27Speaker 8: Everyone in the original series at some point went to
- 48:30Speaker 8: the dark side and then came back. They just had
- 48:33Speaker 8: a lot of books to fill. And some were canon,
- 48:34Speaker 8: some were not canon. A lot of weird stuff happened
- 48:37Speaker 8: in that.
- 48:37Speaker 7: Most of it now is not canon.
- 48:39Speaker 8: Right, right.
- 48:40Speaker 7: Well, again, it's legends.
- 48:42Speaker 2: How are we on time, by the way?
- 48:44Speaker 7: We are several episodes in.
- 48:45Speaker 4: Okay.
- 48:46Speaker 2: Question. Who was the really old guy?
- 48:50Speaker 8: Max von Sydow.
- 48:51Speaker 2: Yeah, but who... Is that someone that we know? Is
- 48:54Speaker 2: that someone from Rebels?
- 48:56Speaker 9: Is that.
- 48:57Speaker 7: No, but in the Star Wars franchise, we have to
- 48:59Speaker 7: find an old, respectable, distinguished actor to introduce into this
- 49:04Speaker 7: film and then kill him off. But the character, is
- 49:06Speaker 7: the character someone that we're supposed to know?
- 49:10Speaker 8: He has a name, and he is the leader in
- 49:13Speaker 8: some church of the force.
- 49:16Speaker 2: Church of the force.
- 49:16Speaker 7: Which my thinking is.
- 49:18Speaker 8: It's just some thing.
- 49:19Speaker 7: They made a.
- 49:20Speaker 8: up a one paragraph backstory for him and that was it.
- 49:23Speaker 7: But I feel like my thinking is the reason he
- 49:26Speaker 7: has such little time in this is somewhere down the
- 49:29Speaker 7: line there's an entire spinoff movie of a young version
- 49:33Speaker 7: of him.
- 49:33Speaker 4: Right.
- 49:34Speaker 7: So there's, again, there's more story. I got it.
- 49:37Speaker 2: He is the son of Art Carney from the holiday special.
- 49:41Speaker 2: I'm telling you, it all fits.
- 49:43Speaker 8: So I thought the same thing. I don't think so.
- 49:45Speaker 7: You thought he was Art Carney's son?
- 49:47Speaker 4: No, no, no.
- 49:47Speaker 7: I don't think that ages are right for that.
- 49:48Speaker 8: Because you don't get Max von Sydow to play a
- 49:51Speaker 8: role in your movie without it being kind of an
- 49:53Speaker 8: important role. And the fact that he's there, he says
- 49:56Speaker 8: a couple lines like, To me, she'll always be a princess.
- 50:00Speaker 8: And then you're dead. I was like, is he someone important?
- 50:03Speaker 7: Should I know what he was? Should I care?
- 50:06Speaker 8: And I went and looked it up, and he has
- 50:08Speaker 8: a name, and he's a mem leader in the Church
- 50:11Speaker 8: of the Force, and that's it.
- 50:13Speaker 7: But it is also what they do. It's kind of
- 50:15Speaker 7: what everybody kept doing. Well, we have to get the
- 50:18Speaker 7: old guy before we get him. Harry Potter kept doing that.
- 50:21Speaker 7: Lord of the Rings did that.
- 50:22Speaker 8: It's the hero's journey kind of stuff.
- 50:24Speaker 7: But it's what they have to do. It's like we
- 50:26Speaker 7: had Alec Guinness. And it all kind of elevates him
- 50:28Speaker 7: a little bit, too. It's like we had Alec Guinness.
- 50:30Speaker 7: We had Peter Cushing. Killed him off. We bring in
- 50:34Speaker 7: Christopher Lee from one of the other series. Killed him off.
- 50:36Speaker 7: So it's like it's what Star Wars does. They bring
- 50:39Speaker 7: in distinguished older actors and give them a little part
- 50:42Speaker 7: and then kill them off so that we can have
- 50:43Speaker 7: a bigger journey for the younger characters.
- 50:46Speaker 8: Like Harrison Ford.
- 50:48Speaker 7: Young buck that he is, Harrison Ford.
- 50:51Speaker 8: They thought the movie was going to fail so they
- 50:54Speaker 8: wanted to get like a renowned actor of Alec Guinness
- 50:57Speaker 8: to come in and play who didn't want to do it.
- 50:59Speaker 7: Oh, no. And continued, even when they got popular.
- 51:02Speaker 8: Did not want to do it. But he added, you know,
- 51:05Speaker 8: gravitas to the scene. And then, you know, when you're
- 51:09Speaker 8: making a film in London, I mean, and you have
- 51:12Speaker 8: a chance to get Peter Cushing in your movie, you're like,
- 51:15Speaker 8: hell yeah, I'm going to get Peter Cushing in my movie.
- 51:18Speaker 2: If Alec Guinness hated Star Wars so much, why did
- 51:20Speaker 2: he come back for the two sequels?
- 51:23Speaker 5: Paycheck.
- 51:25Speaker 7: I mean, by that time they had money. They were
- 51:26Speaker 7: probably like, here, it's two days. Just come in and
- 51:30Speaker 7: sit on this log and we'll make you a ghost.
- 51:31Speaker 2: I mean, have you guys ever read any interviews with
- 51:34Speaker 2: Mark Hamill and did he ever say if Alec Guinness
- 51:38Speaker 2: was just miserable the whole time or... Was he friendly?
- 51:40Speaker 2: Were they friends?
- 51:42Speaker 7: I've heard he just didn't want to do it.
- 51:44Speaker 8: I've heard that he is as classy as you could be.
- 51:48Speaker 8: But he just thought his lines were crap. He thought
- 51:51Speaker 8: the sci-fi was dumb. But he still held himself as
- 51:55Speaker 8: a grand actor would.
- 51:57Speaker 2: Always a professional.
- 52:00Speaker 7: Which is cool. I mean, there's plenty of people that
- 52:02Speaker 7: do that. There's plenty of people that are like.
- 52:05Speaker 2: I mean, he did some crap movies. He was in
- 52:06Speaker 2: Raise the Titanic. Come on.
- 52:08Speaker 4: I mean.
- 52:09Speaker 7: That's a classic?
- 52:11Speaker 4: Oh, no, wait.
- 52:12Speaker 7: I was thinking of Beyond the Poseidon Adventure.
- 52:13Speaker 8: Never mind, never mind.
- 52:14Speaker 7: That one's a classic.
- 52:17Speaker 2: Okay, one other thing I thought was a little crappy
- 52:21Speaker 2: were the octopus monsters.
- 52:23Speaker 7: I was going to ask you guys what.
- 52:26Speaker 8: It seemed unnecessary.
- 52:27Speaker 2: It kind of didn't work for me, but I was
- 52:30Speaker 2: going with it.
- 52:31Speaker 7: I was okay with it just because I thought we
- 52:34Speaker 7: needed some sort of adventure because it had become a
- 52:37Speaker 7: lot of like, and jump on this ship, and then
- 52:39Speaker 7: we go to there.
- 52:40Speaker 2: But they were space pirates. They could have done stuff
- 52:42Speaker 2: with the space pirates.
- 52:42Speaker 7: It was space pirates, but we didn't have a bit...
- 52:45Speaker 7: And again, that was really hard to do in the
- 52:47Speaker 7: old days. We have the technology to do that. It
- 52:50Speaker 7: doesn't mean we have to, but... I thought it was
- 52:52Speaker 7: kind of fun. It's one of those things I feel
- 52:55Speaker 7: like Han and Chewie got into those kind of adventures
- 52:57Speaker 7: all the time back in the day and we never
- 53:00Speaker 7: got to see that. All we got to see was
- 53:01Speaker 7: them dealing with the Empire. I feel like there's a
- 53:03Speaker 7: million little side stories that are kind of more like that.
- 53:06Speaker 7: Remember that time when we captured that? Maybe it was
- 53:09Speaker 7: the effect that kind of That's probably the most... It
- 53:12Speaker 7: was too CG for me. Yeah, that was the most noticeable.
- 53:16Speaker 2: Like, in the original movie, all we needed was the
- 53:18Speaker 2: periscope head and the tentacle around Luke's leg, and I
- 53:22Speaker 2: was terrified of going in the bathtub for years. You know,
- 53:26Speaker 2: this was... I don't know. Maybe, again, it's my CGI fatigue.
- 53:30Speaker 7: But for as little as you noticed in this movie.
- 53:33Speaker 2: It didn't last long. I'm glad about that.
- 53:35Speaker 8: I do agree that I think it was some kind
- 53:38Speaker 8: of pirate shenanigans.
- 53:40Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 53:40Speaker 8: But it did seem like it could have been done
- 53:44Speaker 8: better than that. Like you could have had a shenanigan scene,
- 53:48Speaker 8: but without three CGI monsters getting loose.
- 53:51Speaker 7: I thought it was going to come down to more
- 53:52Speaker 7: of like Tarantino in space where it's like they're in
- 53:55Speaker 7: the middle and he's going to work some sort of
- 53:58Speaker 7: scoundrel deal where they shoot each other and then he
- 54:01Speaker 7: and Chewie get out of it.
- 54:02Speaker 2: Yeah, that would have been great.
- 54:03Speaker 7: That would have been kind of like more fitting of
- 54:04Speaker 7: the old Star Wars. Or what?
- 54:08Speaker 8: Another little nitpicky thing. So you're in space, which supposedly
- 54:12Speaker 8: your ships have sensors and whatnot, and you're getting subsumed
- 54:17Speaker 8: by another spaceship, and you're like, oh, it's a First
- 54:19Speaker 8: Order ship. Shouldn't you be able to look down on
- 54:21Speaker 8: the screen and see what class of ship just swallowed
- 54:24Speaker 8: your ship?
- 54:26Speaker 2: The Falcon's old... Probably doesn't have GPS the way modern
- 54:30Speaker 2: cars do.
- 54:31Speaker 7: Fair enough.
- 54:32Speaker 8: But it almost would have been better if the two
- 54:35Speaker 8: other pirates show up and then the first order comes.
- 54:39Speaker 8: And so now all shit's going to hell and they
- 54:42Speaker 8: get out.
- 54:43Speaker 7: It's a true romance moment. Everyone shoots each other.
- 54:47Speaker 2: I think something else about the octopuses that bugged me was,
- 54:50Speaker 2: of course, the minute the octopus grabs a pirate, he's
- 54:53Speaker 2: eaten immediately. But you grab the hero. I'm just going
- 54:58Speaker 2: to wait half an hour.
- 54:59Speaker 7: I mean, it's the same.
- 55:00Speaker 8: I'm going to drag him across the ship for 10 minutes.
- 55:02Speaker 7: It's the same complaint I had about aliens.
- 55:04Speaker 8: And I love aliens.
- 55:06Speaker 7: But I'm like, everybody else immediately gets chest bursted. Newt
- 55:09Speaker 7: gets drug off and kept captive so she can rescue her.
- 55:12Speaker 2: I just realized. You were complaining about the lack of
- 55:15Speaker 2: severed limbs. There were severed space octopus tentacles.
- 55:19Speaker 7: There you go. There's your severed limb. With a door,
- 55:21Speaker 7: not with a lightsaber. Technicality. But yeah, I feel like
- 55:27Speaker 7: they kind of play that card a little too many times.
- 55:30Speaker 7: But the hero gets drug a little bit further so
- 55:32Speaker 7: we can rescue him, kind of. They get taken back
- 55:35Speaker 7: to get turned into a host person. It was nice.
- 55:38Speaker 7: I don't know.
- 55:39Speaker 2: It was nice that it wasn't the girl that got snagged.
- 55:41Speaker 7: Yeah, and that the girl saved. Once again, the girl saved.
- 55:44Speaker 7: The girl saves him.
- 55:45Speaker 2: Quite a few times.
- 55:46Speaker 8: Although she is the one that let him out by
- 55:48Speaker 8: flipping the wrong pieces.
- 55:50Speaker 7: Again, a very Han Solo moment. She is so, and
- 55:54Speaker 7: that's what I was getting to earlier. I do feel
- 55:56Speaker 7: like we have these original characters that get sidelined or
- 55:59Speaker 7: taken out completely, and the new ones step up. BB's
- 56:02Speaker 7: the new R2. Now, midway in, you know, our girl
- 56:07Speaker 7: is new Chewie. Like, literally. They shoot Chewie. He's laid out. She's,
- 56:12Speaker 7: but again, it gives us the excuse to see her
- 56:14Speaker 7: in the co-pilot seat, see Han go, oh, shit, she
- 56:17Speaker 7: knows what she's doing. When Han has respect for somebody,
- 56:20Speaker 7: you're like, all right, they're pretty damn cool.
- 56:21Speaker 2: You know, one of my favorite Rey scenes, now that
- 56:24Speaker 2: I think about it, do you remember in the original
- 56:27Speaker 2: Star Wars, they come to rescue Princess Leia. She's not
- 56:32Speaker 2: that grateful. She's spunky.
- 56:39Speaker 8: She's like, this is a shit plan.
- 56:42Speaker 7: That's why that movie's so good, though. She's very real world.
- 56:46Speaker 7: She's just like, this is not a rescue. You guys
- 56:49Speaker 7: don't know what the hell you're doing. Why she's also
- 56:51Speaker 7: such a great character.
- 56:52Speaker 2: So Han and Finn are going in to rescue her.
- 56:55Speaker 2: And even though they don't technically rescue her because she's
- 56:58Speaker 2: a badass and she got out, when she finds out
- 57:01Speaker 2: that they had actually come to get her, she is
- 57:04Speaker 2: so grateful and happy. That's when I really fell in
- 57:10Speaker 2: love with this character because she had gratitude. She was
- 57:14Speaker 2: genuinely touched and I think based on those scenes we
- 57:18Speaker 2: see of her on Jakku, her daily life, sitting in
- 57:23Speaker 2: front of the Ad Ad all by herself, I don't
- 57:24Speaker 2: think she really had any friends ever. And it's like
- 57:28Speaker 2: she was... I don't know, my heart kind of broke
- 57:32Speaker 2: because she was so happy that someone cared about her
- 57:35Speaker 2: that much to come and get her. Even though she
- 57:37Speaker 2: didn't technically need it, they came.
- 57:39Speaker 7: I had that even before that. You see both of
- 57:41Speaker 7: them in that first scene where they meet, and they
- 57:44Speaker 7: both have that same reaction of... They're trying to help
- 57:47Speaker 7: each other, and they're like, oh, nobody's ever helped me before.
- 57:51Speaker 7: She's just like, I've been alone my whole life. He's like,
- 57:53Speaker 7: nobody's ever seen me as an individual before, let alone
- 57:57Speaker 7: try to help me get out of this situation. So
- 57:59Speaker 7: it's like that moment where they kind of connect. Again,
- 58:04Speaker 7: one of the running jokes I kind of like is
- 58:06Speaker 7: that he keeps trying to hold her hand. That was
- 58:08Speaker 7: pretty damn funny. You don't have to take my hand. So, again,
- 58:11Speaker 7: you get the little chemistry thing going on there from
- 58:14Speaker 7: the beginning. But at the same time, I think there's
- 58:16Speaker 7: also just a general, like, gratitude that, like, wow, somebody else. And, again,
- 58:21Speaker 7: showing that these characters are such good characters that, again,
- 58:24Speaker 7: I don't normally have that reaction. I'm a heartless bastard.
- 58:28Speaker 7: So the fact that I like them so much.
- 58:30Speaker 2: It works so much better than I hate sand. And
- 58:35Speaker 2: I made you this necklace that will bring you good fortune.
- 58:38Speaker 7: Poor Hayden. in that other little bastard.
- 58:41Speaker 8: In that same scene where Finn is staring at Han
- 58:45Speaker 8: and Han keeps nodding his head. He's like, why are
- 58:49Speaker 8: you doing that?
- 58:49Speaker 7: What does this mean? Trying to come up with a
- 58:52Speaker 7: plan here. Why do you keep doing this? Why do
- 58:54Speaker 7: you keep doing that? I'm like, but again, I was like,
- 58:58Speaker 7: that's kind of ridiculous.
- 58:59Speaker 2: Why would he do that?
- 59:00Speaker 7: I was like, but he's not been around humans his
- 59:03Speaker 7: whole life. He's been raised in this little, he probably
- 59:05Speaker 7: doesn't understand social cues and hey, idiot, look over there. Like,
- 59:10Speaker 7: so again later i was like i guess it does
- 59:12Speaker 7: make sense that he doesn't know how to interact with
- 59:14Speaker 7: people on a regular everyday basis.
- 59:17Speaker 2: By the way you know i knew they didn't kill
- 59:20Speaker 2: poe but Did you think it was strange? He was like, oh,
- 59:23Speaker 2: you're alive. Yeah, I was thrown from the ship.
- 59:25Speaker 9: No problem.
- 59:26Speaker 8: So that was one of my only other few complaints.
- 59:29Speaker 2: Oh, it was?
- 59:30Speaker 4: Okay.
- 59:30Speaker 8: Was the miraculous ejection of Poe. And it managed to
- 59:37Speaker 8: get his jacket off. He was to take the jacket
- 59:38Speaker 8: off and leave it on the, exactly.
- 59:40Speaker 7: Was he wearing it before? I couldn't remember.
- 59:44Speaker 2: I don't remember.
- 59:44Speaker 7: Maybe he took it off before he got it. I'm
- 59:46Speaker 7: just trying to make sense of it now.
- 59:48Speaker 8: I would have thought he didn't take it off because
- 59:49Speaker 8: they kind of jumped in the TIE fighter and then
- 59:51Speaker 8: like immediately, you know, it's not like, oh, let me
- 59:53Speaker 8: get situated.
- 59:56Speaker 7: On the other side of that, it was a pretty
- 59:58Speaker 7: cool jacket. I mean, if I was going to rescue
- 1:00:00Speaker 7: something out of a TIE fighter, probably Poe, but then
- 1:00:03Speaker 7: also the jacket.
- 1:00:04Speaker 2: You know, when they were firing the guns in the
- 1:00:06Speaker 2: TIE fighter, I loved how it wasn't, just it it
- 1:00:10Speaker 2: seems like over the past 40 years or whatever it
- 1:00:15Speaker 2: seems like when you have laser guns you know it's
- 1:00:18Speaker 2: like it's like they they they felt chunky whenever he
- 1:00:22Speaker 2: was firing.
- 1:00:23Speaker 8: They did that with the lightsabers too the lightsabers not
- 1:00:27Speaker 8: only did they look jaggedy when they but they.
- 1:00:29Speaker 2: Now did luke's i mean ren's did And I took
- 1:00:33Speaker 2: it to be that Ren didn't really know how to
- 1:00:34Speaker 2: build a lightsaber.
- 1:00:36Speaker 8: It seemed like Luke's was beefy. The sound was beefier.
- 1:00:39Speaker 8: I don't know if the look was beefier, but it
- 1:00:41Speaker 8: had more of a mmm to it when.
- 1:00:43Speaker 2: It was going. Okay, but when he was shooting the
- 1:00:48Speaker 2: turret in the TIE Fighter, it felt like there was
- 1:00:51Speaker 2: a recoil.
- 1:00:52Speaker 8: Like you're really in something shooting a giant laser cannon
- 1:00:55Speaker 8: and stuff.
- 1:00:55Speaker 2: And then when he gets in the Falcon, I love
- 1:00:58Speaker 2: how the Falcon was so old that he tries to
- 1:01:00Speaker 2: do a subtle move, and it's.
- 1:01:01Speaker 7: He's like, try sitting in this thing.
- 1:01:03Speaker 9: It is.
- 1:01:03Speaker 2: Oh, God.
- 1:01:06Speaker 7: Oh, God.
- 1:01:37Speaker 3: And now, before the next show starts, let's enjoy an intermission.
- 1:01:43Speaker 3: You'll find our snack bar chock full of good things
- 1:01:45Speaker 3: to eat and drink. Tasty, tempting hot dogs, thirst-quenching soft drinks, fresh,

- 1:02:00Speaker 3: the snack bar now. A tasty treat will double your
- 1:02:03Speaker 3: enjoyment of the show.
- 1:02:05Speaker 1: For your convenience, we shall.
- 1:02:07Speaker 3: Keep you informed of the remaining intermission time, three minutes
- 1:02:10Speaker 3: before the next show starts.

- 1:02:49Speaker 1: All his life, he only cared about one thing, himself.
- 1:02:53Speaker 1: But now, the best hotshot pilot in the galaxy was
- 1:02:57Speaker 1: playing babysitter to an old man, a green kid, two robots,
- 1:03:02Speaker 1: and a princess. Han Solo really had his hands full.
- 1:03:06Speaker 1: Han Solo is back. Star Wars is back. Star Wars.
- 1:03:11Speaker 1: Rated PG. Parental guidance suggested.

- 1:03:48Speaker 1: Hey everyone, this is Jeanette Goldstein and you are listening
- 1:03:51Speaker 1: to Movie Meltdown.
- 1:04:11Speaker 4: It's part of your.
- 1:04:12Speaker 5: Problem, you know.
- 1:04:13Speaker 8: You haven't seen enough movies.
- 1:04:15Speaker 4: All of life's riddles are answered in the movies.
- 1:04:18Speaker 1: And now, on with the show.
- 1:04:20Speaker 9: What did you think of the laser bolt being frozen?
- 1:04:39Speaker 7: Nice very nice touch that's i didn't see it in
- 1:04:43Speaker 7: 3d did you see it in 3d no i don't
- 1:04:45Speaker 7: want it wasn't again if it wasn't made for 3d
- 1:04:49Speaker 7: yeah i feel like anything that's just sort of upscaled
- 1:04:52Speaker 7: in quotes to 3d usually usually isn't worth it.
- 1:04:55Speaker 8: One of the things that we you know we go
- 1:04:57Speaker 8: back to how when two and three ruined the jedi
- 1:05:00Speaker 8: they they established what their powers were they could you
- 1:05:04Speaker 8: know jump, they could deflect stuff with their somersaults, whereas this,
- 1:05:08Speaker 8: it's like the powers are a lot more nebulous. I
- 1:05:11Speaker 8: can force you to read your mind. I can stop
- 1:05:14Speaker 8: a laser bolt in midair. I like it's a little
- 1:05:17Speaker 8: more fuzzy.
- 1:05:18Speaker 7: It really didn't define, because if you think about Star Wars,
- 1:05:22Speaker 7: the original, they really didn't even, there wasn't even telepowers.
- 1:05:29Speaker 7: He could change the stormtrooper's mind to do what he
- 1:05:32Speaker 7: wanted to do, He could kind of feel things, but
- 1:05:35Speaker 7: they weren't even, like, moving stuff.
- 1:05:36Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah.
- 1:05:37Speaker 7: That didn't come until Empire, really. So he really had
- 1:05:40Speaker 7: not ironed out at all. Maybe he hadn't decided yet.
- 1:05:42Speaker 7: But I feel like from the Luke point of view,
- 1:05:44Speaker 7: we're taking this ride with Luke, and Luke has no
- 1:05:47Speaker 7: idea what his powers are. And I'm like, again, I
- 1:05:49Speaker 7: think the not knowing is what made it so cool
- 1:05:52Speaker 7: back then. And then when they have to pin everything down, oh,
- 1:05:55Speaker 7: here's this list, and you can do this, and you
- 1:05:56Speaker 7: can do this.
- 1:05:57Speaker 8: Well, and that's sort of the problem is they– In
- 1:06:00Speaker 8: order to make the Jedi's cooler and cooler and cooler,
- 1:06:02Speaker 8: they kept adding more powers. Like, I want to say
- 1:06:04Speaker 8: in one of the Tartofsky cartoons, the original Clone Wars,
- 1:06:09Speaker 8: Mace Windu rips a Star Destroyer out of the sky
- 1:06:13Speaker 8: and crashes it into the ground.
- 1:06:15Speaker 7: That's pretty powerful.
- 1:06:17Speaker 8: I mean, exactly. That might have been actually one of
- 1:06:21Speaker 8: the video games. But he dissembles something with his Force powers,
- 1:06:26Speaker 8: like some big walker.
- 1:06:28Speaker 4: And.
- 1:06:29Speaker 8: You know, so it's like there's this constant, well, we
- 1:06:32Speaker 8: did that.
- 1:06:33Speaker 7: Now we have to make him do something even cooler.
- 1:06:35Speaker 8: So now he moves planets out of their orbits and stuff.
- 1:06:37Speaker 2: The problem with that is they keep saying how Anakin
- 1:06:40Speaker 2: is supposed to be more powerful than all of them,
- 1:06:42Speaker 2: but he never does anything above that. So you never
- 1:06:45Speaker 2: get that feeling.
- 1:06:48Speaker 7: That's one of those I was trying to think, restore
- 1:06:51Speaker 7: balance to the, and I'm like, is how far, like
- 1:06:54Speaker 7: how far off is this prophecy and wherever the hell
- 1:06:57Speaker 7: this prophecy came from? But I'm like, is him, is
- 1:07:01Speaker 7: the whole thing Luke coming back and restoring power? Is
- 1:07:04Speaker 7: it like, well, we were right. You could not have
- 1:07:08Speaker 7: the balance restored to the universe without Anakin doing what
- 1:07:12Speaker 7: he did, having Luke, Luke coming back. And so it's like,
- 1:07:16Speaker 7: is Luke the final answer that comes into play there?
- 1:07:19Speaker 7: I've kind of lately been trying to figure out if
- 1:07:21Speaker 7: that's part of it. they have this grand plan of
- 1:07:24Speaker 7: like restoring balance to the universe. And I'm like, is
- 1:07:27Speaker 7: Luke really the final part of that plan?
- 1:07:29Speaker 8: Well, honestly, I, I, there, there's two things in movies
- 1:07:33Speaker 8: that will immediately turn me off. One is time travel shenanigans.
- 1:07:37Speaker 8: I think that is a weak story plot device.
- 1:07:41Speaker 9: And the other one is prophecy.
- 1:07:42Speaker 7: In a regular movie, or if that's the plot of
- 1:07:44Speaker 7: the main movie. Cause I like time travel movies and,
- 1:07:48Speaker 7: They are nothing but waiting to.
- 1:07:50Speaker 8: Be punched holes in. But if you haven't established time
- 1:07:54Speaker 8: travel and then you have.
- 1:07:55Speaker 7: To throw it in... And then you just fly backwards
- 1:07:57Speaker 7: to save Lois.
- 1:07:58Speaker 8: Then you have.
- 1:07:59Speaker 2: Did you hate Bill and Ted?
- 1:08:02Speaker 7: Because that one sort of was about time travel. That's okay.
- 1:08:05Speaker 7: So great. Come on, that guy's awesome.
- 1:08:07Speaker 8: That introduced the whole, hey, when we get out of this,
- 1:08:10Speaker 8: remind me to put the key there. That's genius because
- 1:08:13Speaker 8: that's what.
- 1:08:13Speaker 9: You would do.
- 1:08:14Speaker 7: That is pretty funny.
- 1:08:15Speaker 2: You know?
- 1:08:16Speaker 7: You can.
- 1:08:17Speaker 8: predetermine your success by saying, when I succeed.
- 1:08:20Speaker 7: Go do this. And I must have succeeded because here
- 1:08:22Speaker 7: it is.
- 1:08:23Speaker 1: Right.
- 1:08:24Speaker 7: That's great.
- 1:08:25Speaker 8: But any time you use time travel or prophecy to me,
- 1:08:30Speaker 8: you should go back and try to think of a better. Yeah.
- 1:08:33Speaker 2: Don't read the Holy Bible.
- 1:08:35Speaker 7: You may hate it. Nine out of ten times.
- 1:08:41Speaker 8: It changes because you misinterpreted the prophecy. You thought he
- 1:08:45Speaker 8: was the thing that was going to bring balance. But no,
- 1:08:47Speaker 8: he's the one that got it further out of whack.
- 1:08:49Speaker 8: And it was his son that as part of the
- 1:08:51Speaker 8: process comes in. And he's the one that restored it.
- 1:08:53Speaker 8: But then who's to say that his son was the
- 1:08:55Speaker 8: one that doesn't get it more out of whack. And
- 1:08:56Speaker 8: then someone else comes.
- 1:08:58Speaker 7: And never ends we might not be done yeah.
- 1:09:00Speaker 8: Continually misinterpret the prophecy so prophecies are bullshit to use
- 1:09:05Speaker 8: as plot devices.
- 1:09:07Speaker 7: Well if Nostradamus has taught me anything it's oh wait
- 1:09:10Speaker 7: that guy didn't know.
- 1:09:11Speaker 8: What the hell he was talking about he has to
- 1:09:11Speaker 8: watch out for a guy named Hisler he was close.
- 1:09:17Speaker 7: Almost that guy.
- 1:09:18Speaker 2: Hokie religions are no substitute for good blaster by your side.
- 1:09:21Speaker 5: The American way.
- 1:09:23Speaker 2: And then your kid kills you because you try to
- 1:09:26Speaker 2: bring the Hokie religion.
- 1:09:27Speaker 8: So how do you interpret that scene at the end?
- 1:09:30Speaker 2: At the very end with Luke?
- 1:09:33Speaker 8: With Kylo Killinghead.
- 1:09:36Speaker 2: What interpret it?
- 1:09:36Speaker 8: Okay, so I feel like... Snook says that you've got
- 1:09:42Speaker 8: one more thing you have to do.
- 1:09:43Speaker 7: Wait, hold it.
- 1:09:44Speaker 2: Footnote. Snook is a terrible name for the new evil guy. Really?
- 1:09:48Speaker 7: Seriously? And really, like, even just... Isn't that from Jersey Shore?
- 1:09:53Speaker 7: But no, on top of that, I was like, doesn't
- 1:09:55Speaker 7: it sound kind of like Snope? Didn't we just have
- 1:09:57Speaker 7: a giant sci-fi extravaganza that also had a bad guy
- 1:10:01Speaker 7: named Snope?
- 1:10:02Speaker 2: I will say this. I was really afraid that he
- 1:10:05Speaker 2: was actually 20 feet tall.
- 1:10:07Speaker 7: Me too.
- 1:10:08Speaker 8: Until the very end of that scene when it flickered out.
- 1:10:10Speaker 2: I was like, okay, good. I did not want to
- 1:10:13Speaker 2: see Luke fighting a 20 foot CGI guy.
- 1:10:17Speaker 7: Well, I've also now heard it theorized that, so does
- 1:10:20Speaker 7: that mean all of that is fake? that like all
- 1:10:24Speaker 7: of it's what do you mean like maybe he doesn't
- 1:10:25Speaker 7: even look like that like it's a total wizard of
- 1:10:27Speaker 7: oz plan like this is all thrown out there as like.
- 1:10:30Speaker 2: You mean those were monkey eyes those weren't.
- 1:10:33Speaker 7: His real eyes monkey eyes because george hadn't made up
- 1:10:35Speaker 7: his mind what he looked like yet.
- 1:10:37Speaker 8: But so um sorry so so so snoke says i've
- 1:10:41Speaker 8: got one more thing you you have to do and
- 1:10:43Speaker 8: he says i don't know if you're if you if
- 1:10:45Speaker 8: you're prepared for it um And I'm pretty sure that was,
- 1:10:50Speaker 8: at some point, you're going to have to come to
- 1:10:52Speaker 8: terms with your parent issues and kill your dad. Like,
- 1:10:56Speaker 8: that's your step to the dark side.
- 1:10:58Speaker 7: It's the Sith way.
- 1:10:59Speaker 8: So, at the end, do you think that he did
- 1:11:03Speaker 8: it because he's like, yes, I'm turning evil? Or is
- 1:11:07Speaker 8: he like, I'm too far gone? Because he makes some
- 1:11:10Speaker 8: thing about being seduced by the light.
- 1:11:12Speaker 2: No, he kept saying that the light was bugging him.
- 1:11:16Speaker 4: Yes.
- 1:11:17Speaker 2: He felt the drawback. to it are you are you
- 1:11:20Speaker 2: asking do you think Han Solo was saying I'll help
- 1:11:25Speaker 2: relieve your pain go ahead and kill.
- 1:11:27Speaker 8: Me no no no no no I'm thinking so so
- 1:11:33Speaker 8: was the action an action of weakness like I don't
- 1:11:38Speaker 8: want to but I'm too far gone so I'm going
- 1:11:41Speaker 8: to do this or was it yeah, I'm going to
- 1:11:44Speaker 8: kill my dad and make the turn to the dark side.
- 1:11:47Speaker 2: I saw the conflict in him.
- 1:11:49Speaker 7: Well, my question is, is the conflict real? Or was
- 1:11:52Speaker 7: he presenting that to bring Han in so that he
- 1:11:55Speaker 7: could kill him? Was he faking that, oh, I'm so
- 1:11:57Speaker 7: torn up, please help me, and then he just wanted
- 1:12:00Speaker 7: to kill him?
- 1:12:00Speaker 2: I really thought the conflict was real. And honestly, if
- 1:12:05Speaker 2: he had left his mask on, I don't think it
- 1:12:07Speaker 2: would have been as powerful, but because you see in
- 1:12:10Speaker 2: his eyes, I mean, again, we need to see this
- 1:12:12Speaker 2: again and kind of really study his body language. But
- 1:12:15Speaker 2: what I took away from it was he was really
- 1:12:18Speaker 2: teetering on the edge. He could have gone either way.
- 1:12:21Speaker 2: And I think at the last second, it just, it
- 1:12:23Speaker 2: pulled him back and he did it. I really don't
- 1:12:25Speaker 2: think he was doing, you're asking if he thought it
- 1:12:28Speaker 2: was a ruse to get him there. I don't think
- 1:12:32Speaker 2: it was.
- 1:12:32Speaker 8: Well, I guess it was, it was a little, what
- 1:12:34Speaker 8: was the conflict?
- 1:12:35Speaker 2: The conflict was the light and the dark inside. He
- 1:12:39Speaker 2: kept filling the hole to the light.
- 1:12:41Speaker 8: And I guess what was the determining factor of stab
- 1:12:46Speaker 8: my dad? He was saying, he.
- 1:12:49Speaker 2: Was telling Han that he is so conflicted and it's
- 1:12:50Speaker 2: tearing him apart. He doesn't know how to stop it.
- 1:12:53Speaker 2: And Han's like, we can help you. And I think
- 1:13:04Speaker 2: in his mind, it was like, I can make this
- 1:13:07Speaker 2: voice in the back of my head shut up if
- 1:13:09Speaker 2: I just kill this guy who represents the light.
- 1:13:13Speaker 7: Again, if we go back to more of the addiction
- 1:13:16Speaker 7: part of it, if the conflict is real, it's him,
- 1:13:22Speaker 7: help me. Take this lightsaber away from me because I.
- 1:13:25Speaker 8: Don't... Yeah, I forgot about that because he holds it.
- 1:13:27Speaker 8: He holds it out and he's like... And then he
- 1:13:30Speaker 8: holds on to it too much.
- 1:13:32Speaker 7: I'm fighting with the light the light says take this
- 1:13:34Speaker 7: lightsaber away from me i'm still good please help me
- 1:13:38Speaker 7: and then the dark side wins out and turns it
- 1:13:41Speaker 7: on so is that what we're to believe that like
- 1:13:44Speaker 7: the the dark side is more of an addiction hold
- 1:13:48Speaker 7: and it takes over and it's more powerful or or
- 1:13:51Speaker 7: again is it it's so powerful that it's making him
- 1:13:54Speaker 7: crazy and the only thing that will shut it up
- 1:13:56Speaker 7: is I'm telling you to kill him, you kill him
- 1:13:58Speaker 7: because I'm the dark side and I'm in charge of
- 1:14:00Speaker 7: your brain now.
- 1:14:01Speaker 2: I think he was trying to kill the light side
- 1:14:06Speaker 2: in his head.
- 1:14:07Speaker 7: I can see that as part of the argument here.
- 1:14:11Speaker 7: I don't know for sure what it is. I think
- 1:14:12Speaker 7: it's all of those things. Well, we obviously have to
- 1:14:14Speaker 7: see the movie a second time. 700 times to figure
- 1:14:17Speaker 7: this out.
- 1:14:19Speaker 8: So that was the other thing is.
- 1:14:23Speaker 8: I went into the movie with no preconceptions. And I
- 1:14:29Speaker 8: don't like J.J. Abrams. And I don't like pretty much
- 1:14:32Speaker 8: any of the movies he's done.
- 1:14:33Speaker 2: If this movie sucked, I was prepared to call him
- 1:14:36Speaker 2: Jar Jar Abrams to the end of time.
- 1:14:37Speaker 7: See, I felt like you were getting a bad vibe
- 1:14:41Speaker 7: when I was defending him as a director. So feel
- 1:14:44Speaker 7: free to do what you have issues with.
- 1:14:47Speaker 8: Because I don't think.
- 1:14:48Speaker 7: He's perfect, but he's been entertaining. I never watched Alias.
- 1:14:50Speaker 8: Never really cared. I thought the first season of Lost
- 1:14:53Speaker 8: was really good, but then it went off the rails
- 1:14:56Speaker 8: because they... And I blame, so he had a sidekick
- 1:15:00Speaker 8: for a long time named Damon Lindelof. Yeah, I figured
- 1:15:02Speaker 8: who can fucking burn in hell.
- 1:15:04Speaker 7: I was pretty sure Abrams was gone by the time
- 1:15:07Speaker 7: it went off the rails.
- 1:15:08Speaker 8: But then he did Super.
- 1:15:10Speaker 9: 8, which is okay.
- 1:15:11Speaker 2: But I didn't like the ending.
- 1:15:12Speaker 7: Yeah, I think it loses its way. The kid's story
- 1:15:15Speaker 7: is awesome. I could care less about the monster bullshit.
- 1:15:17Speaker 2: So I know where you're going. I always kind of
- 1:15:19Speaker 2: feel like J.J. Abrams doesn't always stick the landing of
- 1:15:22Speaker 2: the projects he starts, either because he's there or he's
- 1:15:25Speaker 2: not there. But anyway.
- 1:15:27Speaker 8: And then both Star Trek movies are garbage, in my opinion.
- 1:15:32Speaker 8: And I'm not a Trek fan. I am far more
- 1:15:34Speaker 8: of a Star Wars fan. I grew up with Star
- 1:15:37Speaker 8: Trek because of the original series being on WDRB every
- 1:15:40Speaker 8: Sunday afternoon.
- 1:15:41Speaker 1: Me too.
- 1:15:42Speaker 5: I watched it.
- 1:15:42Speaker 8: But I'm not a fan. And a bunch of other
- 1:15:45Speaker 8: reasons why I'm not a fan of Star Trek in general.
- 1:15:47Speaker 8: They have nothing to do with the.
- 1:15:48Speaker 7: Abrams, but.
- 1:15:50Speaker 8: The first two movies, I think, are bad. The only
- 1:15:52Speaker 8: two good things to come out of that was the
- 1:15:54Speaker 8: casting of Scotty was spot on, and the casting of
- 1:15:57Speaker 8: Bones was spot on.
- 1:15:58Speaker 7: Bones is awesome.
- 1:15:59Speaker 2: They're both so underused.
- 1:16:01Speaker 1: Right.
- 1:16:02Speaker 7: I feel like those two movies are entertaining. I feel
- 1:16:05Speaker 7: like they have huge holes. that like that's more of
- 1:16:09Speaker 7: what concerned me is like he kind of threw the
- 1:16:11Speaker 7: old stuff out the window and went i don't really
- 1:16:13Speaker 7: care i'm gonna do it my way and like screw
- 1:16:15Speaker 7: the people who don't like it which in a way
- 1:16:17Speaker 7: is a it's a gutsy move but again going into
- 1:16:21Speaker 7: star wars i'm a little more reverent.
- 1:16:22Speaker 8: One so i was like um i don't know whether
- 1:16:26Speaker 8: this will be good or not but um you're not
- 1:16:29Speaker 8: selling me on the director now i sort of i
- 1:16:32Speaker 8: sort of feel bad because i want to say he
- 1:16:34Speaker 8: was a huge Star Wars fan and not a Star
- 1:16:37Speaker 8: Trek fan.
- 1:16:37Speaker 2: Yeah, that's true.
- 1:16:38Speaker 8: So they gave him Star Trek and he obviously didn't
- 1:16:40Speaker 8: understand Star Trek. And I'm like, so I hope since
- 1:16:44Speaker 8: he claims to be a Star Wars fan, because it's
- 1:16:46Speaker 8: easy to claim you're a Star Wars fan, I hope
- 1:16:48Speaker 8: he doesn't mess it up. He did, and don't get
- 1:16:50Speaker 8: me wrong, he did a great job with this. But
- 1:16:54Speaker 8: I'm still not sold on him.
- 1:16:56Speaker 7: Well, he's gone now, I'm pretty sure. Right, right.
- 1:16:59Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 1:16:59Speaker 7: I mean, I'm sure he'll be executive producer on stuff.
- 1:17:02Speaker 7: I think he's going to help like shepherd it but
- 1:17:04Speaker 7: I think he's handing the reins over.
- 1:17:06Speaker 5: The next two.
- 1:17:06Speaker 2: I almost wonder if episode eight has a harder job
- 1:17:09Speaker 2: because there was so much nostalgia going into this and
- 1:17:13Speaker 2: Harrison Ford. I think Harrison Ford being in it was
- 1:17:15Speaker 2: a huge deal.
- 1:17:16Speaker 7: He had the bridge movie. He had the generations of
- 1:17:20Speaker 7: his movie. So thankfully it didn't go down that road,
- 1:17:24Speaker 7: but he had the like, okay, we're going to pass.
- 1:17:26Speaker 7: And like I said, just handing the reins over, like
- 1:17:29Speaker 7: you're the new Han Solo.
- 1:17:31Speaker 8: Now, you know?
- 1:17:32Speaker 7: Although they've crossed over. Because in the beginning, I feel
- 1:17:34Speaker 7: like Finn has very Han Solo type behavior. I feel
- 1:17:38Speaker 7: like he may eventually... It's just funny she's riding around
- 1:17:41Speaker 7: with Chewie in the Millennium Falcon.
- 1:17:43Speaker 2: I can't put... Yeah, I mean, I honestly.
- 1:17:44Speaker 7: But she eventually, I feel like, will be more of
- 1:17:46Speaker 7: the Luke.
- 1:17:47Speaker 8: Well, and I don't want a new Luke.
- 1:17:49Speaker 7: I don't want a new Han. No, I don't either.
- 1:17:50Speaker 8: I don't want a new Leia. I want just... If
- 1:17:52Speaker 8: you need five new characters, give me five new characters.
- 1:17:55Speaker 2: Yeah, it makes me wonder what Finn's place is going
- 1:17:57Speaker 2: to be. You know?
- 1:17:59Speaker 9: I feel like he.
- 1:18:00Speaker 7: Again, I feel like he... And I wonder, because again,
- 1:18:03Speaker 7: he took to the lightsaber so much, I wonder if
- 1:18:06Speaker 7: we get to the next one, is he also going
- 1:18:08Speaker 7: to like, yeah, I know you're a badass with the Force,
- 1:18:10Speaker 7: but I want to learn about it too. Are they
- 1:18:12Speaker 7: both going to be easy?
- 1:18:13Speaker 2: Part of me wonders if he's tuned into it a
- 1:18:15Speaker 2: little bit. Again, because in the very beginning, he kind
- 1:18:17Speaker 2: of snaps. Yeah. And again, if he's there with Max Monsito,
- 1:18:23Speaker 2: who was head of Force Church, maybe there was some
- 1:18:27Speaker 2: foresee things happening and it was kind of getting in
- 1:18:30Speaker 2: his head when he got there.
- 1:18:31Speaker 8: And can I say that I like the fact that
- 1:18:33Speaker 8: the arms race has gone to the point where the
- 1:18:36Speaker 8: Empire now has anti-lightsaber weapons as opposed to this guy
- 1:18:41Speaker 8: running through the battlefield with the most powerful thing that
- 1:18:44Speaker 8: slices and dices everything he comes across. They now have
- 1:18:47Speaker 8: something that stops them.
- 1:18:51Speaker 7: That was kind of impressive and weird at the same time.
- 1:18:55Speaker 2: What did you think when Finn skewered that guy? That
- 1:18:57Speaker 2: was like.
- 1:18:58Speaker 8: Oh, that was out of nowhere.
- 1:19:00Speaker 7: Yeah, it was kind of shocking because you didn't even
- 1:19:02Speaker 7: see him lead up to it. That was his opening move.
- 1:19:05Speaker 7: And I was like, whoa, no wonder this is PG-13.
- 1:19:07Speaker 7: He just stabbed that guy through the chest.
- 1:19:09Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 1:19:10Speaker 7: Which, again, I thought that was kind of cool. That's
- 1:19:12Speaker 7: what I always was so iffy about on the first
- 1:19:16Speaker 7: two when Lucas came back, because now we have the PG. Granted,
- 1:19:20Speaker 7: there was nothing in the old ones, and Empire would
- 1:19:23Speaker 7: have been PG-13.
- 1:19:23Speaker 8: Well, because a lightsaber is not a friendly weapon.
- 1:19:26Speaker 7: No, there's no lightweight.
- 1:19:28Speaker 8: It solely slices and dices stuff, or reflects your stuff
- 1:19:32Speaker 8: back at you. I mean, it is not in any
- 1:19:35Speaker 8: way user-friendly item.
- 1:19:37Speaker 7: But I always felt like the prequels kind of pulled
- 1:19:40Speaker 7: back until Sith. Sith gets pretty dark, but I felt
- 1:19:43Speaker 7: like you could feel Lucas pulling back to the kid-friendly
- 1:19:46Speaker 7: PG level. Whereas this, from the get-go, it's like, it's
- 1:19:49Speaker 7: pretty violent and they don't care.
- 1:19:51Speaker 8: Well, it starts out with the Massacre of a Village.
- 1:19:53Speaker 7: Yeah, I was like, it stays with that. And I'm like,
- 1:19:56Speaker 7: that's the universe we need to set up here. So
- 1:19:58Speaker 7: don't pull it back to be kid-friendly. Just make the
- 1:20:02Speaker 7: movie we need to make.
- 1:20:03Speaker 2: I gotta ask this, you know, when that very first
- 1:20:06Speaker 2: trailer was shown, the big nerd controversy was the cross
- 1:20:10Speaker 2: guard on the lightsaber. Seeing the movie, did you guys
- 1:20:14Speaker 2: even think about it? Did you care?
- 1:20:16Speaker 7: I'm at least happy that we saw it used. Because
- 1:20:19Speaker 7: I was like, it seems like it's equally as dangerous.
- 1:20:23Speaker 7: But I always said that about Darth Maul, too. I
- 1:20:25Speaker 7: was like, that's possibly the worst weapon I've ever seen.
- 1:20:28Speaker 7: Unless you're that guy, it's the most deadly weapon to
- 1:20:31Speaker 7: yourself than anything else I've seen.
- 1:20:34Speaker 8: Well, I mean, a lightsaber, even with a cross guard,
- 1:20:38Speaker 8: that's not... Another lightsaber.
- 1:20:40Speaker 7: A basic lightsaber.
- 1:20:41Speaker 8: It is a fucking deadly weapon.
- 1:20:42Speaker 7: It's a deadly to you weapon if you have no
- 1:20:45Speaker 7: idea what you're doing. So yeah, to me it's just
- 1:20:48Speaker 7: as easy to take your hand off if you don't
- 1:20:50Speaker 7: know what you're doing. But the fact that we saw
- 1:20:53Speaker 7: him use it for what I guess is it's only
- 1:20:55Speaker 7: real because there are a lot of up close battles with,
- 1:20:58Speaker 7: you know, as we've seen in the prequels, they do
- 1:21:01Speaker 7: a whole lot of like get in your face and
- 1:21:03Speaker 7: have some dialogue while you're holding it there making a
- 1:21:04Speaker 7: buzzy noise. So at least in this case, you have
- 1:21:08Speaker 7: a way to use that as your advantage. And if
- 1:21:11Speaker 7: you're Sith, you want to be a dick and use
- 1:21:13Speaker 7: everything to your advantage. So why not add that?
- 1:21:16Speaker 8: I am fine. Again, we all have our lines. And
- 1:21:20Speaker 8: that was cool for coolness sake. And I was fine
- 1:21:23Speaker 8: with it. I wasn't bent out of shape like a
- 1:21:26Speaker 8: lot of people were. So many people were.
- 1:21:28Speaker 2: It was so weird.
- 1:21:29Speaker 8: A lightsaber by itself is the most impractical overpowered weapon
- 1:21:33Speaker 8: there is.
- 1:21:34Speaker 7: But we're all working one in our basement, right? Let's
- 1:21:37Speaker 7: just be honest.
- 1:21:38Speaker 8: To bring back Venture Brothers where the guy at the
- 1:21:42Speaker 8: swap meet where he's selling lightsabers and the guy's like,
- 1:21:45Speaker 8: this is every kid's dream. I don't care how much
- 1:21:51Speaker 8: this costs, I want it. Oh, now I see why
- 1:21:54Speaker 8: it doesn't work because they didn't cut anything.
- 1:21:56Speaker 2: I love how 21 became a badass. Oh, that was
- 1:21:59Speaker 2: just the best thing.
- 1:22:01Speaker 1: Ogo Pogo.
- 1:22:06Speaker 9: Oh, man.
- 1:22:07Speaker 8: But yeah, every kid's dream after seeing Star Wars was
- 1:22:10Speaker 8: to have a lightsaber. I mean, good God.
- 1:22:12Speaker 7: And we all played with them. The one thing I
- 1:22:14Speaker 7: don't agree with, you can have your crazy little lightsaber
- 1:22:17Speaker 7: shooting out the side. You can have the one that
- 1:22:19Speaker 7: fires both sides, Darth Maul style. But that new thing
- 1:22:22Speaker 7: they're selling for kids where you build a lightsaber and
- 1:22:24Speaker 7: it's got U-shaped things and four lightsabers coming off the top.
- 1:22:27Speaker 7: That's the dumbest looking.
- 1:22:29Speaker 2: Oh, it's like a light menorah.
- 1:22:30Speaker 1: It is.
- 1:22:31Speaker 7: I was just like, why is this candle opera in
- 1:22:33Speaker 7: your hand, kid? Because it's... It's supposed to be a lightsaber,
- 1:22:36Speaker 7: and now you just look like a dork.
- 1:22:38Speaker 2: It comes full circle. You said if you have the Force,
- 1:22:44Speaker 2: why do you have to be a monk? Why couldn't
- 1:22:45Speaker 2: you be a gardener? It's a light garden weasel. It's
- 1:22:49Speaker 2: what it is.
- 1:22:50Speaker 8: It's a light tiller.
- 1:22:51Speaker 2: It's a light tiller.
- 1:22:53Speaker 7: I think if you're a Jedi, you should look cool.
- 1:22:55Speaker 2: It's my light tool.
- 1:22:56Speaker 7: It makes you look like a dork, so you should
- 1:22:58Speaker 7: go old school and look cool.
- 1:22:59Speaker 8: A big stick with a crossbar, and then four little
- 1:23:01Speaker 8: ones that come out for you to do your raking.
- 1:23:05Speaker 7: The best forest gardener there is.
- 1:23:08Speaker 2: I tilled it like I owned it. Well, when's the
- 1:23:16Speaker 2: show again? Is it on here?
- 1:23:17Speaker 7: Is there anything else we've left out?
- 1:23:20Speaker 2: Well, I think the movie will start up again in
- 1:23:22Speaker 2: about 20 minutes.
- 1:23:23Speaker 7: I mean, I have my sort of wraparound here. Because
- 1:23:28Speaker 7: I think it did a great job.
- 1:23:31Speaker 2: It totally.
- 1:23:32Speaker 7: reinvigorated the whole franchise. I actually have faith moving forward now.
- 1:23:37Speaker 7: I think everything about it was great. The one thing
- 1:23:40Speaker 7: I will say.
- 1:23:41Speaker 2: Except for space geography, right?
- 1:23:45Speaker 8: We've all got our lines.
- 1:23:47Speaker 7: No, the one thing I'll say is the even bigger
- 1:23:50Speaker 7: picture than even nitpicking story plot lines is the fact
- 1:23:54Speaker 7: that as awesome as you're going to do, JJ, and
- 1:23:58Speaker 7: everybody who comes after him, They're still playing in somebody
- 1:24:01Speaker 7: else's sandbox. So the one thing I didn't get... Actually,
- 1:24:06Speaker 7: I more responded to how, like I said, how familiar
- 1:24:09Speaker 7: it felt. I finally felt like we were back in
- 1:24:11Speaker 7: a Star Wars movie. But the other thing I've given
- 1:24:14Speaker 7: Lucas so much credit for lately is how visionary that
- 1:24:18Speaker 7: first Star.
- 1:24:19Speaker 5: Wars movie was.
- 1:24:21Speaker 7: In 77, nobody had seen anything like that. Not just
- 1:24:24Speaker 7: the special effects. I also mean just visual style. The
- 1:24:28Speaker 7: look of the Death Star, the look of everything is
- 1:24:31Speaker 7: so stylish and different than anything we'd seen. And now
- 1:24:35Speaker 7: when they get up on the ship and it looks
- 1:24:37Speaker 7: kind of like the Death Star, I'm like, that's awesome.
- 1:24:40Speaker 7: It's back. But you're also just kind of taking from
- 1:24:43Speaker 7: that thing we've already seen. I want them to move
- 1:24:46Speaker 7: into new. And we get moments of it. We get
- 1:24:48Speaker 7: things that are at least different that we haven't seen before.
- 1:24:50Speaker 2: Yeah, but think about it. You were saying you didn't
- 1:24:52Speaker 2: like Phantom Menace. One of the reasons is because it
- 1:24:54Speaker 2: didn't feel like a Star Wars movie. And it's because
- 1:24:56Speaker 2: it didn't have those elements that you recognized.
- 1:24:59Speaker 7: It didn't.
- 1:24:59Speaker 2: It didn't have the weird ovals on the wall.
- 1:25:03Speaker 7: So much of that. Again, it was so good to
- 1:25:06Speaker 7: see that again. And I'm not taking away from what
- 1:25:09Speaker 7: they're doing. Again, I think that's why this works. I'm just, again,
- 1:25:12Speaker 7: I heap so much anger on Lucas for the prequels,
- 1:25:16Speaker 7: but I'm like, I want to give him, like, everybody
- 1:25:19Speaker 7: forever is going to be, like, indebted to him for
- 1:25:23Speaker 7: creating that first movie and that style. And I think
- 1:25:26Speaker 7: they turned around and improved on it without him. I
- 1:25:28Speaker 7: think Empire's a technically better movie. But again, it's still
- 1:25:33Speaker 7: taking from what he already created the universe he already
- 1:25:36Speaker 7: started building.
- 1:25:37Speaker 2: Did he get a credit?
- 1:25:38Speaker 7: He's executive producer on, you know, the rest of them.
- 1:25:41Speaker 2: No, no, I'm sorry, in Seven.
- 1:25:43Speaker 7: Did they even do characters by? They have to, I
- 1:25:47Speaker 7: would think, somewhere.
- 1:25:48Speaker 8: I know that supposedly when he sold everything to Disney,
- 1:25:53Speaker 8: and this is, my vague recollection.
- 1:25:56Speaker 7: It was full out.
- 1:25:57Speaker 8: So I think that he had seven written.
- 1:26:00Speaker 2: Yeah, and they didn't want it.
- 1:26:02Speaker 8: Now, what they did with it, what elements are still
- 1:26:06Speaker 8: in there that were his, I have no idea. I
- 1:26:09Speaker 8: know that they brought back, was it Lawrence Kasdan?
- 1:26:10Speaker 7: Lawrence Kasdan came back. I was so glad to see that.
- 1:26:13Speaker 8: And other people. So I'm sure that written by is
- 1:26:17Speaker 8: probably 10 people.
- 1:26:19Speaker 2: I did read a story where Lucas said that he,
- 1:26:22Speaker 2: as part of the sale, he gave him his ideas
- 1:26:25Speaker 2: for episode seven and they didn't use, they wanted to
- 1:26:27Speaker 2: go in a completely different direction. And he was a
- 1:26:29Speaker 2: little bit about it.
- 1:26:31Speaker 7: So, you know, but again, for as much shit as
- 1:26:34Speaker 7: I give him, he gave all that money to Jerry.
- 1:26:37Speaker 7: So I'm like, for all the stuff I want to
- 1:26:39Speaker 7: keep on him, I'm like, that's a pretty damn cool thing.
- 1:26:42Speaker 8: Oh yeah. I mean, you know, I, I, I lump
- 1:26:44Speaker 8: a lot of, a lot of shit on, on Lucas too.
- 1:26:45Speaker 8: And as I'll say, he isn't a good person or
- 1:26:48Speaker 8: hasn't done great things.
- 1:26:49Speaker 7: I just kind of an amazing person that, we just
- 1:26:53Speaker 7: needed somebody to, again, he made some bad movies, but
- 1:26:57Speaker 7: at the same time, he's a pretty awesome person for
- 1:27:00Speaker 7: the other stuff he's brought us.
- 1:27:02Speaker 8: So I always look at it like this. Being a
- 1:27:05Speaker 8: non-creative person whose elements are not critiqued by millions of
- 1:27:10Speaker 8: people every day, I live a pretty good life. I
- 1:27:14Speaker 8: am not risking anything because I'm not putting anything out
- 1:27:17Speaker 8: there for the masses to consume and nitpick and critique.
- 1:27:21Speaker 2: Except podcasts.
- 1:27:22Speaker 8: Well, fair enough. And guess what? I don't look at
- 1:27:25Speaker 8: people commenting.
- 1:27:26Speaker 7: On the podcast. I'll let you know when they hate
- 1:27:29Speaker 7: your name. Please do.
- 1:27:30Speaker 2: I used to dream of people commenting on our podcast.
- 1:27:33Speaker 7: I used to dream of it.
- 1:27:34Speaker 6: So it.
- 1:27:36Speaker 8: So anybody who puts something out there, it's easy for
- 1:27:41Speaker 8: me to sit there and critique J.J. Abrams or anyone,
- 1:27:43Speaker 8: but they are doing something that I can't do and
- 1:27:46Speaker 8: I don't do. So they are, even though I believe
- 1:27:50Speaker 8: it's my right to nitpick them, I certainly hope that
- 1:27:54Speaker 8: they don't go home and cry about this stuff.
- 1:27:57Speaker 2: If they gave us the movie for free, then I
- 1:28:01Speaker 2: wouldn't nitpick at all. You know, like, I used to
- 1:28:03Speaker 2: work at.
- 1:28:04Speaker 7: You say that now.
- 1:28:04Speaker 2: I used to work at Leo, and it's a free newspaper,
- 1:28:09Speaker 2: and it always would boggle our minds when people would
- 1:28:12Speaker 2: complain about it. And we're like, you didn't buy it.
- 1:28:16Speaker 2: It didn't cost you anything. What do you care? Why
- 1:28:19Speaker 2: do you care? You know, but because they're asking me
- 1:28:22Speaker 2: to buy a $ 15 movie ticket, I can complain about
- 1:28:26Speaker 2: Kylo getting out of the OSHA bridge back in the
- 1:28:30Speaker 2: snow before they get.
- 1:28:31Speaker 3: Back, so.
- 1:28:33Speaker 7: I'm in Lucas as a whole thing. It's like, again,
- 1:28:35Speaker 7: he made very few movies in his career and maybe doesn't.
- 1:28:40Speaker 7: all together now, so it sounds like. So, I mean,
- 1:28:43Speaker 7: he made two. Again, American Graffiti's pretty good. From that
- 1:28:47Speaker 7: point on, you know, Star Wars, what he gave us
- 1:28:51Speaker 7: from Star Wars on as far as the universe is
- 1:28:54Speaker 7: pretty impressive and what he's handed off to these other people.
- 1:28:57Speaker 7: But even outside of that, Skywalker Sound, ILM, blue screen technology,
- 1:29:04Speaker 7: which now gave us green screen. Pixar came from a
- 1:29:08Speaker 7: company that was started by him and got bought by Mac.
- 1:29:13Speaker 7: I mean, all of these things that led to everything else. Like,
- 1:29:16Speaker 7: he revolutionized so much in our industry that just came from,
- 1:29:21Speaker 7: you know, he didn't single-handedly do it, but he started
- 1:29:25Speaker 7: everything that then changed everything that we have. You know,
- 1:29:29Speaker 7: it's like I still for as much crap as I
- 1:29:32Speaker 7: give him, like he's such an important character in filmmaking
- 1:29:37Speaker 7: and just the technology that went into it and the
- 1:29:40Speaker 7: marketing of it. I mean, nobody had ever marketed a
- 1:29:43Speaker 7: movie like he did or merchandised a movie like it
- 1:29:46Speaker 7: for good or bad. He changed history at that point.
- 1:29:49Speaker 7: And I'm like, he's a pretty impressive character to look
- 1:29:53Speaker 7: at in the 20 and 21st century. I don't know.
- 1:29:57Speaker 7: It's a huge mark that he's left on society as
- 1:30:01Speaker 7: a whole.
- 1:30:02Speaker 2: And that's... I don't know.
- 1:30:03Speaker 7: That's pretty impressive.
- 1:30:05Speaker 2: Well, I'm getting you a Jar Jar Binks action figure
- 1:30:08Speaker 2: for Christmas.
- 1:30:08Speaker 7: And I hate Jar Jar. Senator Jar Jar. Who brought
- 1:30:17Speaker 7: the downfall of all things.
- 1:30:21Speaker 8: Well, so if you want to get nitpicky, how do
- 1:30:24Speaker 8: you live on a planet... And not realize that there's
- 1:30:28Speaker 8: a whole aquatic race living in the oceans and swamps
- 1:30:31Speaker 8: of your planet? It's like the Booleans.
- 1:30:34Speaker 2: What the hell is a gum gum? It's like the homeless.
- 1:30:38Speaker 2: Don't really see them. Don't really care about them. Don't
- 1:30:40Speaker 2: really think about them.
- 1:30:41Speaker 8: Yeah, but the homeless... Well, do the homeless have large
- 1:30:44Speaker 8: underground cities.
- 1:30:44Speaker 2: That they all live in? They might.
- 1:30:46Speaker 8: Where do they go to sleep on cold nights?
- 1:30:47Speaker 7: I don't know. If we got ourselves in trouble and
- 1:30:50Speaker 7: can recruit the homeless to fight our battles for us,
- 1:30:53Speaker 7: we'd totally do that.
- 1:30:55Speaker 2: And everyone knows that there's an underworld of lizard men
- 1:30:58Speaker 2: that secretly.
- 1:30:58Speaker 9: Rule the world.
- 1:30:59Speaker 7: Everyone knows that.
- 1:31:01Speaker 2: We just choose not to see it. AlexJones.com.
- 1:31:09Speaker 8: But, you know, I agree. Like I said, if you
- 1:31:12Speaker 8: look at the sci-fi movies that came before Star Wars,
- 1:31:15Speaker 8: the only one that even comes close to the look
- 1:31:18Speaker 8: is 2001. I just said that out of the last episode.
- 1:31:21Speaker 7: I was like, yeah, 2001 is... Technology was there, but
- 1:31:25Speaker 7: it's so slow.
- 1:31:27Speaker 4: Right.
- 1:31:27Speaker 7: Action wasn't there.
- 1:31:28Speaker 8: But you can see how after that movie came out,
- 1:31:30Speaker 8: no one adopted it.
- 1:31:32Speaker 7: No.
- 1:31:32Speaker 8: And then nothing, nothing, nothing, nothing. And then Star Wars
- 1:31:35Speaker 8: comes out.
- 1:31:36Speaker 7: And again.
- 1:31:38Speaker 8: That was the moment where we can take sci-fi serious,
- 1:31:43Speaker 8: you know? I mean, it always was serious, but it
- 1:31:45Speaker 8: made enough money for people to look at it and go, yes.
- 1:31:49Speaker 7: Financially serious.
- 1:31:50Speaker 8: Yes, we can make money from this, so let's give
- 1:31:52Speaker 8: it to people.
- 1:31:53Speaker 6: Story-wise.
- 1:31:53Speaker 7: Because it almost counterbalanced. It's like, because 2001 takes it serious,
- 1:31:58Speaker 7: deadly serious, and it didn't really make a ton of money.
- 1:32:01Speaker 7: But the other way around, it's like, we can take
- 1:32:04Speaker 7: the merchandising of it and the making it a serious
- 1:32:09Speaker 7: thing in the market and turn around and do a
- 1:32:12Speaker 7: much lighter, more fun plot. And then people will show
- 1:32:16Speaker 7: up and actually buy the tickets, which, so it's, it's
- 1:32:18Speaker 7: that counterbalance of like, it's a much lighter story than 2001,
- 1:32:22Speaker 7: but we're using the technology of it to make something
- 1:32:25Speaker 7: that will please audiences too.
- 1:32:28Speaker 2: It's yeah.
- 1:32:28Speaker 7: It's such a balance that again, I don't know if
- 1:32:30Speaker 7: they were aware how much they were doing.
- 1:32:33Speaker 8: Which again was what made, Guardians of the Galaxy is
- 1:32:37Speaker 8: such a breath of fresh air. It's like, oh, finally.
- 1:32:41Speaker 8: It's not this stuck-up-your-ass sci-fi. It's just fun. It's just fun.
- 1:32:46Speaker 8: And again, one of the things that's always amazed me
- 1:32:49Speaker 8: about Star Wars, which probably goes into dislike of Star Trek,
- 1:32:53Speaker 8: is Star Wars made... you feel that there is a
- 1:32:58Speaker 8: huge universe out there. Like there are parts, the weirdness
- 1:33:01Speaker 8: and strange things that you've never even seen. And it
- 1:33:04Speaker 8: even try. It's just like, we have a cantina with
- 1:33:06Speaker 8: a bunch of shit and we're going to let you
- 1:33:08Speaker 8: extrapolate from that. Whereas Star Trek.
- 1:33:10Speaker 7: We don't address it at all.
- 1:33:11Speaker 2: Unless you're a robot and you're not allowed in.
- 1:33:13Speaker 4: Right. Right.
- 1:33:14Speaker 8: Well, but did, Did R2 forget that he had those
- 1:33:17Speaker 8: jets that he could have just flown down the stairs?
- 1:33:19Speaker 2: Loopholes, loopholes. That is what I've been saying. There's so
- 1:33:25Speaker 2: many moments in Empire Strikes Back when he could have
- 1:33:28Speaker 2: used his jets. He could have used his jets.
- 1:33:30Speaker 7: But they were damaged and then he wasn't owned by
- 1:33:33Speaker 7: a queen anymore. The rebellion's poor. They can't afford to
- 1:33:38Speaker 7: put new jets in him.
- 1:33:39Speaker 2: You know what's funny? This was a Disney movie and
- 1:33:44Speaker 2: Back when Star Wars came out and everyone was like, oh, shit,
- 1:33:47Speaker 2: we need to make sci-fi movies. They made The Black Hole.
- 1:33:51Speaker 8: Which is an awesome movie. Are you knocking on the
- 1:33:53Speaker 8: black hole?
- 1:33:54Speaker 7: See, again, I've heard you're on the previous. Are we
- 1:33:58Speaker 7: saying the show is officially dead?
- 1:34:00Speaker 2: No.
- 1:34:00Speaker 7: It's still thinking about coming back?
- 1:34:02Speaker 2: We've actually had a couple. We do it maybe every
- 1:34:05Speaker 2: month or so.
- 1:34:05Speaker 7: On your show, you had some negative things to say
- 1:34:08Speaker 7: about The Black Hole. And I was listening going, why
- 1:34:10Speaker 7: am I not on this episode? So I can be
- 1:34:12Speaker 7: the lone defender. Because you don't do Skype. Who the
- 1:34:16Speaker 7: hell would do that?
- 1:34:17Speaker 8: I'm not saying it's great.
- 1:34:18Speaker 2: Remember how I said I just saw Logan's run last year?
- 1:34:20Speaker 2: I just saw the black hole.
- 1:34:22Speaker 8: I just saw it like a year ago, too, and
- 1:34:23Speaker 8: I still think it's a fantastic movie.
- 1:34:26Speaker 2: Oh, I totally can see the fun and the flaws
- 1:34:30Speaker 2: in it. But it's like if they made it. What
- 1:34:34Speaker 2: was it, 79 when they made it?
- 1:34:36Speaker 8: Something like that.
- 1:34:38Speaker 2: It's like they totally missed the fun thing out of
- 1:34:41Speaker 2: Star Wars. And they were just thinking, oh, it's in
- 1:34:43Speaker 2: space with lasers. Kids will love it. We'll sell toys.
- 1:34:46Speaker 2: They totally missed it.
- 1:34:48Speaker 7: Maximilian is the coolest freaking robot in the universe.
- 1:34:51Speaker 8: We're going to have an insane spaceship captain that zombifies
- 1:34:54Speaker 8: and robifies his crew. Kids will love it.
- 1:34:58Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:34:58Speaker 7: And ends up in hell?
- 1:35:00Speaker 8: A giant killer red robot with a hell motif.
- 1:35:05Speaker 7: I love Maximilian so much.
- 1:35:07Speaker 2: The sexy lady will be 40 years old.
- 1:35:10Speaker 9: The kids love.
- 1:35:11Speaker 7: The milk scene.
- 1:35:11Speaker 8: The theme song to that movie is fantastic.
- 1:35:17Speaker 7: Don't get me wrong.
- 1:35:19Speaker 8: Does it compare to Star Wars? No, but I think
- 1:35:21Speaker 8: it is a Logan's Run caliber sci-fi.
- 1:35:25Speaker 2: It's funny. It's like Logan's Run came before Star Wars.
- 1:35:30Speaker 2: Black Hole came after. Black Hole took a lot of,
- 1:35:33Speaker 2: you know, like, okay, we need orchestra music. You know,
- 1:35:36Speaker 2: if you listen to Logan's Run, it's a lot of
- 1:35:37Speaker 2: that cheesy synth stuff that I think turned off people
- 1:35:41Speaker 2: to sci-fi movies, but you get this orchestra, and it
- 1:35:44Speaker 2: feels real, and it feels important. By the way, one
- 1:35:48Speaker 2: thing Logan's Run has going for it that Star Wars doesn't.
- 1:35:51Speaker 8: Jennifer Agutter.
- 1:35:51Speaker 2: Amazing boobs. Amazing boobs.
- 1:35:54Speaker 8: Jennifer Agutter.
- 1:35:57Speaker 2: No reason to show them, but they did anyway.
- 1:35:58Speaker 7: It was great. Again, you saw.
- 1:36:02Speaker 2: She plays a nun now on Call the Midwife.
- 1:36:05Speaker 8: She was also in... Every.
- 1:36:06Speaker 2: Time I see her in her nun suit, I'm like,
- 1:36:10Speaker 2: I've seen her naked.
- 1:36:11Speaker 8: As a sexy nurse?
- 1:36:12Speaker 2: I've seen her boobs.
- 1:36:13Speaker 8: And they're nice.
- 1:36:14Speaker 7: But, I mean... It's not just like, I mean, you
- 1:36:17Speaker 7: want to heap the criticism on Black Hole, but think
- 1:36:21Speaker 7: how many other knockoff Star Wars movies came after that.
- 1:36:25Speaker 8: So if we say that Black Hole came out in 79,
- 1:36:29Speaker 8: Alien came out in 79, which was one of the
- 1:36:33Speaker 8: movies that probably destroyed my childhood.
- 1:36:36Speaker 7: That's what did it.
- 1:36:37Speaker 8: Because as a seven-year-old, I should have not seen the
- 1:36:40Speaker 8: movie Alien.
- 1:36:41Speaker 7: But it's awesome.
- 1:36:43Speaker 2: Did any movie that came out After Star Wars, it
- 1:36:47Speaker 2: was trying to be like Star Wars.
- 1:36:50Speaker 9: Did any movie actually capture that?
- 1:36:55Speaker 2: Magic in a Bottle? I don't think they do.
- 1:36:56Speaker 7: For us personally or for the world as a whole?
- 1:36:59Speaker 2: Well, for me personally, I think the one that came
- 1:37:01Speaker 2: closest to it was a TV show. It was Battlestar Galactica.
- 1:37:04Speaker 2: Other than that, I can't think of a movie. Well, yeah.
- 1:37:07Speaker 2: That came right after Star Wars.
- 1:37:09Speaker 7: Yeah, I didn't watch a ton of it originally.
- 1:37:12Speaker 2: But that kind of... I mean, it was a cheesy
- 1:37:15Speaker 2: Glenn A. Larson TV show, but it kind of had
- 1:37:18Speaker 2: the fun at times of it.
- 1:37:20Speaker 8: Wrath of Khan.
- 1:37:22Speaker 7: That was the one I was leaning towards. I was like,
- 1:37:24Speaker 7: that's the one that got the technology right and told
- 1:37:27Speaker 7: a good story.
- 1:37:28Speaker 1: Good point.
- 1:37:28Speaker 8: And got the world it was in right.
- 1:37:32Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:37:32Speaker 8: You know, the first Star Trek, eh.
- 1:37:34Speaker 2: That's a total thing. Like the first... Star Trek, I think,
- 1:37:37Speaker 2: fell into the black hole trap where they're like, hey,
- 1:37:39Speaker 2: they just want to see spaceships. And as long as
- 1:37:42Speaker 2: it's spaceships in space, the people will love it.
- 1:37:44Speaker 7: It was more of the 2001 traffic.
- 1:37:47Speaker 2: It's so slow. That truth.
- 1:37:49Speaker 7: So slow.
- 1:37:50Speaker 8: Well, and again, that was, you know, a lot of
- 1:37:53Speaker 8: the original Star Trek episodes were written by, like, sci-fi writers. So,
- 1:37:58Speaker 8: I mean, a lot of it was trying to tell this.
- 1:38:00Speaker 7: Really important, you know, story. They're slow-paced and telling us
- 1:38:02Speaker 7: Like a social, you know, kind of metaphor.
- 1:38:05Speaker 8: And so the whole V'ger technology thing just didn't work.
- 1:38:08Speaker 2: What a lot of people don't realize about the original
- 1:38:10Speaker 2: Star Trek, there were amazing episodes. But for every amazing episode,
- 1:38:15Speaker 2: there was like five crap episodes.
- 1:38:18Speaker 7: They had to fill in the whole season. Oh, my God.
- 1:38:20Speaker 8: Well, you know, and again, that's the 70s were a
- 1:38:24Speaker 8: weird time.
- 1:38:25Speaker 2: It was the 60s, actually.
- 1:38:29Speaker 8: And so, again, to me, if you do 10 things
- 1:38:34Speaker 8: and one of them is knocked out of the park,
- 1:38:38Speaker 8: I'll take the other nine and be, eh, nine bad ones,
- 1:38:42Speaker 8: but one great one that's awesome. So I can look
- 1:38:46Speaker 8: over some of them. some of the cheesier ones, like
- 1:38:49Speaker 8: the Space Hippies.
- 1:38:50Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 1:38:50Speaker 8: You know, because then you got the original Wrath of,
- 1:38:55Speaker 8: you know.
- 1:38:55Speaker 7: Khan, Demon Seed.
- 1:38:56Speaker 2: Who I learned was not Jerry Reed. I thought for
- 1:38:59Speaker 2: years that the Space Hippie.
- 1:39:02Speaker 9: Was Jerry Reed.
- 1:39:02Speaker 2: I swore that was Jerry Reed, and it wasn't. It
- 1:39:06Speaker 2: was the cowboy from the Blues Brothers. So, yeah.
- 1:39:11Speaker 7: Thank God we've gotten to the bottom of that one.
- 1:39:14Speaker 8: But I would say that the other one to really
- 1:39:15Speaker 8: kind of capture at least a sci-fi thing, I would
- 1:39:19Speaker 8: say Raiders of the Lost Ark also captured the pulp.
- 1:39:22Speaker 7: That got the fun. The serial adventure thing.
- 1:39:25Speaker 2: And it was Harrison Ford.
- 1:39:28Speaker 7: And there's weird paranormal things going on in.
- 1:39:33Speaker 2: All of those. There were some crap Raiders of the
- 1:39:35Speaker 2: Lost Ark knockoffs.
- 1:39:36Speaker 7: Oh, a lot of them.
- 1:39:38Speaker 8: King Solomon's Mines?
- 1:39:40Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 1:39:40Speaker 8: With a very young Sharon Stone?
- 1:39:43Speaker 7: I couldn't stand that Alan Quartermain dude. I don't know
- 1:39:46Speaker 7: that I dislike Chamberlain. I don't know what it was.
- 1:39:49Speaker 7: Maybe it was just because I knew that wasn't Harrison Ford,
- 1:39:52Speaker 7: and it just pissed me off so much.
- 1:39:53Speaker 2: Wasn't Tom Selleck supposed to be Indiana Jones?
- 1:39:55Speaker 7: He was supposed to be Indiana Jones. I believe he
- 1:39:58Speaker 7: turned it down.
- 1:39:58Speaker 2: I thought it was because he couldn't get out of
- 1:40:00Speaker 2: his TV contract.
- 1:40:01Speaker 7: That might be it, too.
- 1:40:03Speaker 8: Well, that's a whole other thing. Again, when you realize that...
- 1:40:07Speaker 8: It's always interesting when I could not view... star wars
- 1:40:12Speaker 8: starring anyone other than yeah who who they were.
- 1:40:16Speaker 7: But you know look at those but but if you
- 1:40:18Speaker 7: look at.
- 1:40:19Speaker 8: The casting i mean kerr russell tried out for it
- 1:40:21Speaker 8: you know and i'm like.
- 1:40:23Speaker 7: Some of them i look at and i'm like william
- 1:40:25Speaker 7: katt that might have been a luke yeah i can
- 1:40:28Speaker 7: kind of see that.
- 1:40:28Speaker 8: But but it's it's so ingrained in my head now
- 1:40:31Speaker 8: that yeah these are the people that that will forever
- 1:40:35Speaker 8: hold those roles. And so I don't want to see
- 1:40:38Speaker 8: the casting calls of things. I don't want to see
- 1:40:40Speaker 8: who could have been in them because it doesn't work.
- 1:40:42Speaker 7: It's interesting.
- 1:40:44Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:40:44Speaker 7: It's one of those, I can see them trying, again,
- 1:40:46Speaker 7: I can see Kurt Russell getting cast at that time
- 1:40:49Speaker 7: as Han Solo. I can't see like many other people,
- 1:40:53Speaker 7: but on that one, I'm like, that's not far off.
- 1:40:56Speaker 7: I can't imagine it without Harrison Ford, but I'm like,
- 1:40:58Speaker 7: it's not a bad call really for, especially at that
- 1:41:01Speaker 7: time for him. Like that's, that's not bad. So I
- 1:41:04Speaker 7: don't know. It is interesting, but with all of that
- 1:41:06Speaker 7: stuff that we just sort of lucked into everything falling
- 1:41:09Speaker 7: into place. Same thing like, and it comes back in
- 1:41:12Speaker 7: this one, adding the John Williams music. It was not
- 1:41:15Speaker 7: supposed to have that originally.
- 1:41:17Speaker 9: Really?
- 1:41:17Speaker 7: Talk about gravitas. It just brings it up.
- 1:41:21Speaker 2: I didn't even know that that was even a question.
- 1:41:24Speaker 7: I'm pretty sure they originally were going to do Space
- 1:41:26Speaker 7: Synth-y like everything else at that time. Oh, I thought
- 1:41:31Speaker 7: you meant Episode 7. No, no, I'm talking about the
- 1:41:33Speaker 7: original one. But I was saying it comes back because
- 1:41:36Speaker 7: I was realizing sitting there watching 7 today that I'm like, God,
- 1:41:41Speaker 7: this makes this so much better. As much as I'm
- 1:41:43Speaker 7: loving this, and again, it's so much nostalgia at this point.
- 1:41:48Speaker 7: Hearing that sting come in right when the ship flies,
- 1:41:51Speaker 7: and I'm like, fuck. It's so perfect, and it's so
- 1:41:57Speaker 7: much nostalgia for me. But I'm like, it's also just
- 1:41:59Speaker 7: because it was so good that first time.
- 1:42:01Speaker 2: You know what kind of threw me off at first?
- 1:42:04Speaker 2: It didn't have the 20... First Century Fox drum intro.
- 1:42:07Speaker 7: Yes, it's not.
- 1:42:08Speaker 2: Oh, I miss that.
- 1:42:10Speaker 8: I was thinking about that, too.
- 1:42:11Speaker 2: I miss that so much because you hear those drums
- 1:42:14Speaker 2: and you're like, shit's about to happen. I love it.
- 1:42:16Speaker 1: It's coming.
- 1:42:16Speaker 7: It's coming.
- 1:42:18Speaker 2: And it just kind of just started.
- 1:42:19Speaker 7: I mean, you can put it on your phone and
- 1:42:22Speaker 7: sneak it in and put your earbuds in and just
- 1:42:24Speaker 7: start it before.
- 1:42:25Speaker 2: I wonder if some... Because you know how guys on
- 1:42:27Speaker 2: the internet, they'll recut Phantom Menace.
- 1:42:29Speaker 7: Oh, I'm sure this one will have them.
- 1:42:30Speaker 2: I'm sure someone's going to recut it with that in
- 1:42:32Speaker 2: the beginning.
- 1:42:33Speaker 7: And have six other weird... Parallel cuts going on.
- 1:42:37Speaker 8: Well, and so, if I remember correctly, Lucas had to
- 1:42:41Speaker 8: pay a lot of money to not have opening credits.
- 1:42:45Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 1:42:46Speaker 2: He was kicked out of the guild, too, wasn't he?
- 1:42:47Speaker 7: Yeah, it was one of those, like, you had to
- 1:42:50Speaker 7: have it that way.
- 1:42:51Speaker 8: But how much does that change your experience? There's no
- 1:42:55Speaker 8: slow build. There's no big.
- 1:42:57Speaker 9: Yeah.
- 1:42:57Speaker 8: Long starring so-and-so and this and that. And then the crawl.
- 1:43:02Speaker 7: I mean, think when you watch old, old movies. That's
- 1:43:05Speaker 7: also when they put most of the credits in the beginning. Like,
- 1:43:08Speaker 7: you watch those movies in the 50s and 60s. It's
- 1:43:11Speaker 7: like five and a half minutes of starring this and
- 1:43:13Speaker 7: the best boy. How many people? It was all at
- 1:43:15Speaker 7: the beginning.
- 1:43:16Speaker 2: How many people came in late to that movie when
- 1:43:18Speaker 2: they first saw it because they thought, ah, I can
- 1:43:20Speaker 2: go to the bathroom and get some popcorn.
- 1:43:21Speaker 7: I got 15 minutes. I'm getting some raisinets. I'll see
- 1:43:24Speaker 7: you kids later.
- 1:43:25Speaker 2: And then they get in.
- 1:43:26Speaker 8: What's Wait a minute, what are these droids doing on
- 1:43:28Speaker 8: this desert planet? You know, having missed the whole... They
- 1:43:31Speaker 8: keep talking about this Darth guy.
- 1:43:33Speaker 7: Who is he?
- 1:43:34Speaker 2: But, the way... In the prequels, I hated 3PO in
- 1:43:42Speaker 2: the prequels so much.
- 1:43:43Speaker 7: Well, it's not his fault.
- 1:43:45Speaker 2: And yet, in this, when he pops up in between
- 1:43:50Speaker 2: Han and Leia, I was laughing so hard.
- 1:43:53Speaker 4: That was.
- 1:43:53Speaker 8: That was about the exact amount of C-3PO you want.
- 1:43:56Speaker 2: In a movie. That took me back to Empire Strikes
- 1:44:00Speaker 2: Back in the Falcon.
- 1:44:03Speaker 6: Oh, yeah.
- 1:44:04Speaker 7: In the original, because as a kid, I was just,
- 1:44:07Speaker 7: I don't know. He was just dorky, and he was like, whatever.
- 1:44:09Speaker 7: It's one of those when I revisited it, probably when
- 1:44:12Speaker 7: we were standing around watching it 40 times a day,
- 1:44:14Speaker 7: I came to love 3PO so much because... He's got
- 1:44:20Speaker 7: such great lines, but they're subtle. It's not the stupid
- 1:44:23Speaker 7: stuff in the prequels where he's kicking his head around
- 1:44:26Speaker 7: or whatever.
- 1:44:28Speaker 8: He and R2 were basically low on hearty.
- 1:44:30Speaker 7: Yeah, and we're meant to be.
- 1:44:33Speaker 2: And it just did not work in the prequels.
- 1:44:35Speaker 8: And that's the thing that is so glaring about the
- 1:44:37Speaker 8: prequels is we know Lucas knows or knew how to
- 1:44:41Speaker 8: inject humor into something, but he just went like... dumb
- 1:44:45Speaker 8: with it.
- 1:44:46Speaker 7: I don't know how much he did. It was one
- 1:44:48Speaker 7: of those, I wonder how much, again, back in the beginning.
- 1:44:52Speaker 8: Someone injected the right amount of humor in the first two.
- 1:44:54Speaker 7: Back in the beginning when he had so many other
- 1:44:56Speaker 7: people helping him and had so many people going, I
- 1:44:59Speaker 7: don't know if that's a good idea, George. And when
- 1:45:01Speaker 7: you get to the prequels, nobody tells him that because
- 1:45:04Speaker 7: he's a billionaire.
- 1:45:05Speaker 2: A lot of it is also like, you get someone
- 1:45:07Speaker 2: like Harrison Ford doing the lines. It's going to be funny.
- 1:45:11Speaker 2: It's just going to be funny.
- 1:45:12Speaker 8: Well, it's... I mean, he basically gave us two of
- 1:45:17Speaker 8: the greatest improvised scenes in all of movies that I know.
- 1:45:21Speaker 8: And the pulling out the gun and shooting the sword guy.
- 1:45:24Speaker 8: I mean, those are.
- 1:45:26Speaker 7: He's got good instincts.
- 1:45:27Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:45:29Speaker 2: And, oh, but that to the three, like we were
- 1:45:31Speaker 2: talking about how they don't explain things.
- 1:45:34Speaker 8: Oh, the red arm?
- 1:45:34Speaker 2: And it's going to be for spinoff media. I love
- 1:45:37Speaker 2: how 3PO immediately called attention to, you probably didn't recognize
- 1:45:40Speaker 2: me because of my red arm. Funny story there. And
- 1:45:43Speaker 2: then he doesn't, he doesn't get to say the story.
- 1:45:46Speaker 2: He just kind of goes off to the side.
- 1:45:47Speaker 7: That was my favorite. He probably didn't recognize me.
- 1:45:51Speaker 2: Because I have this red arm.
- 1:45:52Speaker 7: If anybody knows what you look and sound like, 3PO,
- 1:45:56Speaker 7: it's Han Solo.
- 1:45:58Speaker 2: But it's like, 3PO has this amazing story, apparently, about
- 1:46:02Speaker 2: why he has to have a red arm, and he
- 1:46:03Speaker 2: didn't get to tell it in his vlog.
- 1:46:05Speaker 8: Does anyone know what it is? Because I don't.
- 1:46:07Speaker 2: I don't.
- 1:46:07Speaker 7: He's not very good at telling stories, so it's okay.
- 1:46:10Speaker 2: It's probably explained in some book or some comic somewhere. Oh,
- 1:46:12Speaker 2: I know it is, but I'm just curious. I don't know.
- 1:46:14Speaker 7: I don't know.
- 1:46:15Speaker 2: But that's what I like. I like how they called
- 1:46:17Speaker 2: attention to it. Look, I have a red arm, but
- 1:46:20Speaker 2: we're going to tell you.
- 1:46:21Speaker 8: I would actually rather there is no story behind it.
- 1:46:23Speaker 7: Yeah, I like that. It is a noodle incident. It
- 1:46:25Speaker 7: was like the leg.
- 1:46:26Speaker 2: It was your severed limb. You just got it back on.
- 1:46:29Speaker 5: No? No?
- 1:46:30Speaker 4: Okay.
- 1:46:30Speaker 7: It was like the leg in Star Wars. It was
- 1:46:32Speaker 7: years before I went, wait, that is a really totally
- 1:46:36Speaker 7: different color. Why is that? Yeah. And they don't... I
- 1:46:40Speaker 7: think later they tried to retcon some nonsense story in
- 1:46:43Speaker 7: or something, but like.
- 1:46:44Speaker 2: I just took it as they ran out of old
- 1:46:47Speaker 2: shin guards.
- 1:46:48Speaker 7: They probably didn't.
- 1:46:49Speaker 2: Have any more.
- 1:46:50Speaker 7: Oh, actually, wasn't it?
- 1:46:51Speaker 1: Oh, man.
- 1:46:52Speaker 7: Yeah, there's some sort of weird.
- 1:46:53Speaker 2: It's like something happens to your car and you go
- 1:46:56Speaker 2: to the junkyard.
- 1:46:56Speaker 7: There's some sort of weird side universe story where it
- 1:47:00Speaker 7: was a bomb. His leg was a bomb. That's what
- 1:47:08Speaker 7: we're thinking. Don't you think this didn't end up in
- 1:47:11Speaker 7: the movie? And they had to take it off, and
- 1:47:13Speaker 7: it blew up, and then they couldn't replace it with
- 1:47:15Speaker 7: that limited edition version of the rest of him, and
- 1:47:18Speaker 7: so he ended up with this silver-looking leg. But again,
- 1:47:21Speaker 7: I was more like, no, probably in London they couldn't
- 1:47:24Speaker 7: find another piece that was the right color, and they
- 1:47:26Speaker 7: were like.
- 1:47:26Speaker 1: Screw it.
- 1:47:26Speaker 8: Like, Mace Harder was closed the day.
- 1:47:28Speaker 7: They needed to go and spray paint.
- 1:47:30Speaker 2: It's the same reason why they were talking about how
- 1:47:34Speaker 2: on the Y-Wing fighters... those engine pods are supposed to
- 1:47:37Speaker 2: have covers on them but they were thinking like this
- 1:47:40Speaker 2: is a rebel band you know they're always in the
- 1:47:43Speaker 2: thick of it they're probably like i ain't got time
- 1:47:45Speaker 2: to put on the damn covers every time i'm just
- 1:47:48Speaker 2: gonna leave them off you know i.
- 1:47:49Speaker 7: Ain't got time to replace my hubcaps yeah got a
- 1:47:52Speaker 7: space battle to fight.
- 1:47:57Speaker 2: Oh that's great yeah have you seen the clone wars cartoon.
- 1:48:01Speaker 7: Bits and pieces.
- 1:48:02Speaker 8: It gets good.
- 1:48:03Speaker 2: Oh, it's great.
- 1:48:04Speaker 7: Yeah, I've heard the movie's not good. Skip the movie
- 1:48:07Speaker 7: and go to a series. Right, exactly.
- 1:48:09Speaker 2: But there's a couple of episodes where they have a
- 1:48:12Speaker 2: squadron of pristine Y-Wing fighters right off of the line.
- 1:48:17Speaker 2: The interpods are covered and they're all smooth and awesome.
- 1:48:20Speaker 2: I love that little touch because, you know, by the
- 1:48:23Speaker 2: time it gets to.
- 1:48:23Speaker 7: By the time they beat the hell out of them
- 1:48:26Speaker 7: in the rebellion.
- 1:48:27Speaker 8: When you talk about female characters... when the Clone Wars started,
- 1:48:32Speaker 8: they introduced basically Anakin's sidekick, Padme.
- 1:48:35Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 1:48:36Speaker 8: Or I'm not, not Padawan. Ahsoka.
- 1:48:38Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:48:38Speaker 8: And her arc is fantastic. Like if you can get
- 1:48:44Speaker 8: through the first season of it and the later ones,
- 1:48:46Speaker 8: her arc is fantastic. And I think she showed up
- 1:48:49Speaker 8: on Rebels, didn't she?
- 1:48:50Speaker 1: Yes.
- 1:48:51Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:48:51Speaker 8: And that, that, that character is great.
- 1:48:53Speaker 2: The really interesting thing about Clone Wars is it, It
- 1:48:58Speaker 2: actually shows Anakin's journey into darkness so much better than
- 1:49:02Speaker 2: the movies do. If you watch it, the first couple
- 1:49:07Speaker 2: of seasons, it's like the episodes aren't in chronological order.
- 1:49:11Speaker 2: They kind of just kind of happen like Like, episode
- 1:49:14Speaker 2: 15 technically happened before episode 5, and I really don't
- 1:49:19Speaker 2: know why they did it that way, but starting around
- 1:49:21Speaker 2: the third season, they start to go in order, you know?
- 1:49:24Speaker 8: Well, they started to have more of an arc to, you.
- 1:49:29Speaker 3: Know.
- 1:49:29Speaker 2: It really was good.
- 1:49:31Speaker 8: I'm not sure I like the extra... Seven episodes they
- 1:49:35Speaker 8: tacked on the end with Yoda and learning the Force
- 1:49:39Speaker 8: ghost stuff.
- 1:49:40Speaker 2: Yeah, that was a little weird.
- 1:49:41Speaker 7: Which didn't come into play in Seven.
- 1:49:44Speaker 3: No.
- 1:49:45Speaker 7: So I'm wondering, are they just going to totally drop
- 1:49:48Speaker 7: that now?
- 1:49:49Speaker 2: Oh, here's a fun fact. I just read this today
- 1:49:52Speaker 2: because I was on this internet blackout for weeks.
- 1:49:55Speaker 7: So today you were like, finally!
- 1:49:56Speaker 2: Today I was reading stuff. When Rey had her flashback
- 1:50:00Speaker 2: when she touched the lightsaber, apparently... there was dialogue from,
- 1:50:06Speaker 2: from Yoda. Frank Oz came in and recorded some lines.
- 1:50:09Speaker 2: There was dialogue from Ewan McGregor actually came in, did
- 1:50:14Speaker 2: a couple of lines and they got a clip of
- 1:50:18Speaker 2: Alec Guinness saying something too. And that's all in that
- 1:50:21Speaker 2: little flash flashback scene.
- 1:50:23Speaker 8: So that's not the dialogue's not there.
- 1:50:26Speaker 2: It isn't it.
- 1:50:27Speaker 7: Oh, it is.
- 1:50:27Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 1:50:27Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 1:50:28Speaker 2: It's probably all processed and you can't really hear it,
- 1:50:30Speaker 2: but apparently that's, that's all in there. And so the,
- 1:50:33Speaker 2: what they're thinking is they may do more of these
- 1:50:37Speaker 2: flashback type things in the future and in future movies.
- 1:50:41Speaker 2: I mean, and they'll, they may get into more of
- 1:50:44Speaker 2: that kind of stuff that way, you know, and.
- 1:50:47Speaker 7: Cause we don't really have that in the original trilogy.
- 1:50:50Speaker 7: There aren't really flashbacks.
- 1:50:52Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:50:53Speaker 8: Speaking of human Gregor. Um, so he was the only
- 1:50:56Speaker 8: person in each of the first three prequels.
- 1:51:01Speaker 2: Sorry, what?
- 1:51:01Speaker 8: He was one of the few characters in each of
- 1:51:04Speaker 8: the first three prequels.
- 1:51:05Speaker 2: Natalie Amidala.
- 1:51:07Speaker 8: Well, yeah, but Ewan McGregor was.
- 1:51:09Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 1:51:11Speaker 8: Wedge and Tilly's was also one of the few characters
- 1:51:14Speaker 8: in four or five and six.
- 1:51:15Speaker 9: Right.
- 1:51:16Speaker 8: Who also survived.
- 1:51:16Speaker 2: Who's had a great career.
- 1:51:18Speaker 8: Well, he is Ewan McGregor's uncle.
- 1:51:20Speaker 2: Right, yeah.
- 1:51:21Speaker 8: Which, how cool as a kid would it be to
- 1:51:24Speaker 8: have an uncle who's in all three Star Wars movies?
- 1:51:27Speaker 8: I mean, you've got to be like the cool fucking uncle.
- 1:51:30Speaker 7: Except it was Wedge.
- 1:51:31Speaker 8: Uncle Wedge, he was in all three of the Star
- 1:51:33Speaker 8: Wars movies.
- 1:51:34Speaker 2: Oh, he was riding on Luke's coattails.
- 1:51:38Speaker 7: See, I like that we... Because I remember we always
- 1:51:40Speaker 7: made fun of him. Because I've heard so many other
- 1:51:42Speaker 7: people that were like, Wedge Antilles, hero of the rebellion.
- 1:51:45Speaker 7: And again, Rogue Squadron, he's got this whole weird spinoff thing.
- 1:51:49Speaker 7: And people like.
- 1:51:50Speaker 8: Which they're turning into a movie, by the way.
- 1:51:52Speaker 7: Yeah. I'm like, fans get so into him as a character.
- 1:51:55Speaker 7: And I was like, I remember as I described him, Wedge,
- 1:51:59Speaker 7: the master of the dorky side of the force.
- 1:52:02Speaker 2: I love that scene in Empire Strikes Back on Hoth
- 1:52:05Speaker 2: when Luke's getting in his X-Wing. And there's Wedge walking by. Hey, Luke,
- 1:52:09Speaker 2: see you at the rendezvous because you and I are pals,
- 1:52:14Speaker 2: you know? We were the only two survivors of that
- 1:52:17Speaker 2: Death Star. We bloated up together.
- 1:52:19Speaker 1: You and me, Luke, right?
- 1:52:20Speaker 9: Hey, guys, look.
- 1:52:22Speaker 2: Luke and me are talking.
- 1:52:23Speaker 7: Anyway, Doc, like I was saying.
- 1:52:26Speaker 2: Yeah, and Luke's like, yeah, yeah, Wedge.
- 1:52:28Speaker 7: Thank God I got a good co-pilot.
- 1:52:31Speaker 2: Don't go where Wedge is going. Go to, I don't know.
- 1:52:34Speaker 8: Was Wedge the guy in the back of the speeder
- 1:52:36Speaker 8: with him?
- 1:52:37Speaker 4: No.
- 1:52:39Speaker 8: I'd like to think that Wedge is always trying to
- 1:52:41Speaker 8: get in the plane with Luke because Luke's going to live.
- 1:52:45Speaker 7: He really should if he knows what's good for him.
- 1:52:47Speaker 7: I want to be his co-pilot.
- 1:52:48Speaker 2: He probably told Zack, Zack, if you can try to
- 1:52:51Speaker 2: get in with Luke because he'll probably live. You know, like, oh.
- 1:52:54Speaker 7: Jack, just don't get killed. All right. Is there anything
- 1:53:00Speaker 7: else you need to tell people?
- 1:53:02Speaker 8: I need to see it again.
- 1:53:04Speaker 7: I mean, I think that's our takeaway. We need to
- 1:53:06Speaker 7: go watch it 700 more times.
- 1:53:07Speaker 2: Kind of an afterglow one, yeah.
- 1:53:10Speaker 7: I can't... Yeah. We've found our little nitpicks, but I can't... Yeah,
- 1:53:15Speaker 7: I can't.
- 1:53:16Speaker 2: You know what I was telling you before we did this?
- 1:53:19Speaker 4: I was.
- 1:53:20Speaker 2: You know, this movie had so much to live up
- 1:53:23Speaker 2: to because it wasn't supposed to be just a great movie.
- 1:53:26Speaker 2: For a lot of people, they wanted to see a religious...
- 1:53:30Speaker 2: They wanted to have a religious experience. They didn't want
- 1:53:32Speaker 2: to have a movie.
- 1:53:33Speaker 1: They.
- 1:53:34Speaker 2: some people have taken this whole mythical universe so seriously
- 1:53:40Speaker 2: in their life that if it was going to be
- 1:53:42Speaker 2: anything less than spectacular, they were, we may have had a.
- 1:53:47Speaker 7: Couple of suicides reported. Or I was waiting for an uprising.
- 1:53:50Speaker 7: And so it's like.
- 1:53:53Speaker 2: In a weird way, what kind of pressure are you
- 1:53:56Speaker 2: under to, you're not supposed to make a movie. You're
- 1:53:59Speaker 2: supposed to make a religious experience for somebody. And they, I,
- 1:54:05Speaker 2: I feel converted. I don't know.
- 1:54:07Speaker 7: I mean, you can check that on the box now, right?
- 1:54:10Speaker 7: I mean, which is it the government forms or which one?
- 1:54:12Speaker 7: Some of them now have that as an option now.
- 1:54:15Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 1:54:15Speaker 2: In Britain.
- 1:54:16Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:54:16Speaker 2: You can do that.
- 1:54:17Speaker 8: I want to sort of feel bad for, um, I
- 1:54:20Speaker 8: sort of feel bad for kids these days to some
- 1:54:23Speaker 8: extent because we're, and don't get me wrong, we just
- 1:54:26Speaker 8: nitpicked a bunch of insignificant stuff. Um, but I think
- 1:54:29Speaker 8: the takeaway has been, it's a great Star Wars movie.
- 1:54:32Speaker 2: Um, That's all I wanted.
- 1:54:34Speaker 1: Exactly.
- 1:54:37Speaker 8: Back in the 70s, there was just.
- 1:54:40Speaker 8: You had your opinion of the movie, and that's you
- 1:54:43Speaker 8: and your friends, and that's all that mattered.
- 1:54:44Speaker 7: You and your kids at the lunch table would argue,
- 1:54:46Speaker 7: and that was it.
- 1:54:47Speaker 8: You know, the internet in the 70s. And now you've
- 1:54:51Speaker 8: got this interesting thing of not only do you have
- 1:54:53Speaker 8: everyone else telling you what you should think about it,
- 1:54:56Speaker 8: but then there's almost always the immediate pushback of, well,
- 1:55:01Speaker 8: everyone likes this movie... That movie sucked because it's cool
- 1:55:05Speaker 8: to be negative and anti-whatever the mass opinion is.
- 1:55:09Speaker 7: I'm pretty sure there was sort of a fallback. Again,
- 1:55:13Speaker 7: in the second wave there, it had that push of
- 1:55:17Speaker 7: the prequels came out, all the old geeks hated it,
- 1:55:20Speaker 7: so then, number one, kids didn't care. Again, recently working
- 1:55:24Speaker 7: in a video store, kids would walk in and get,
- 1:55:27Speaker 7: I want episode three and episode five. They would just
- 1:55:32Speaker 7: get whatever. They were all Star Wars movies. They all
- 1:55:35Speaker 7: came out of the same bunch. They all meant the
- 1:55:38Speaker 7: same thing to them. They did not have the weird
- 1:55:40Speaker 7: little hang-ups that we did. They just grew up with
- 1:55:43Speaker 7: all of them existing, and they like Star Wars.
- 1:55:45Speaker 8: Well, and that's what was interesting about when she said
- 1:55:49Speaker 8: she had a 3, 4, or 4, 5, and 6
- 1:55:51Speaker 8: on VCR. I'm like, so you got to watch 4, 5,
- 1:55:54Speaker 8: and 6... together. I watched four and then had to
- 1:56:02Speaker 8: wait four years for five and then had to wait
- 1:56:06Speaker 8: another four years for six.
- 1:56:08Speaker 2: Kids got it easy these days.
- 1:56:10Speaker 7: It was only like three. Come on.
- 1:56:13Speaker 8: It's interesting. We live in a culture of binge consuming.
- 1:56:20Speaker 8: I don't like to watch episodic content once a week.
- 1:56:23Speaker 8: If I can wait to the end and watch it
- 1:56:26Speaker 8: all at the same time in chunks, I'd rather watch
- 1:56:29Speaker 8: it like that. Nothing sucked more than reading the first
- 1:56:33Speaker 8: four Harry Potter books and then having to wait four
- 1:56:36Speaker 8: years for the fifth one to come out. It's the
- 1:56:40Speaker 8: same thing with the Game of Thrones. It affects the
- 1:56:45Speaker 8: way that you sort of interpret things and appreciate them
- 1:56:48Speaker 8: to be able to see, wait a week or see
- 1:56:51Speaker 8: them all at once because you can catch threads that
- 1:56:53Speaker 8: you forget from week to week.
- 1:56:55Speaker 4: Yeah, yeah.
- 1:56:56Speaker 8: And so, you know, even if I do watch something
- 1:56:58Speaker 8: week to week, I will then, once I can get
- 1:57:01Speaker 8: it all together, I will watch it all. You know,
- 1:57:04Speaker 8: like Venture Brothers, I would watch it every week, but
- 1:57:06Speaker 8: then once it came out in DVD, I'd watch it all.
- 1:57:09Speaker 8: And nitpicks I had watching it week to week didn't
- 1:57:13Speaker 8: exist when I watched it. all together like season four
- 1:57:18Speaker 8: with man I hated Sergeant Hatred as their block replacement
- 1:57:22Speaker 8: and I thought he is annoying but actually watching it
- 1:57:25Speaker 8: back to back he's actually not that annoying but each
- 1:57:28Speaker 8: week I had a week to sit there and stew
- 1:57:30Speaker 8: about the episode and come up with fanciful reasons why
- 1:57:34Speaker 8: I didn't like it or nitpicks that you don't get
- 1:57:37Speaker 8: when you get to watch it all together.
- 1:57:39Speaker 7: See I think it depends I think and again I
- 1:57:42Speaker 7: think that's almost why we need a whole new setting
- 1:57:45Speaker 7: like I've said recently I'm like there's some things that
- 1:57:49Speaker 7: are meant to be week to week there's some television
- 1:57:51Speaker 7: shows that I think work better episode to episode and
- 1:57:56Speaker 7: probably waiting time in between sometimes because you see the
- 1:58:00Speaker 7: flaws or the similarities when you watch the episode one
- 1:58:04Speaker 7: right after the other you're like this is the same
- 1:58:06Speaker 7: damn show every week whereas if it's a bigger story
- 1:58:10Speaker 7: like things that are coming out on Netflix like I
- 1:58:13Speaker 7: keep praising Jessica Jones lately but I'm like if you're
- 1:58:16Speaker 7: watching something that is one big 10 hour story that's
- 1:58:20Speaker 7: a different thing like that is okay to watch in
- 1:58:23Speaker 7: one big run but if it's something that is sort
- 1:58:25Speaker 7: of a summed up self-contained little story every week Sometimes
- 1:58:31Speaker 7: that may, again, they couldn't have conceived a way to
- 1:58:33Speaker 7: watch it any other way. So they weren't meant to be. Again,
- 1:58:37Speaker 7: when we like marathon through a show from the 50s,
- 1:58:39Speaker 7: I was like, that isn't even how we were supposed
- 1:58:42Speaker 7: to watch it the way they created it.
- 1:58:44Speaker 2: Which show from the 50s are you binge watching?
- 1:58:47Speaker 5: I Love Lucy.
- 1:58:48Speaker 7: That's not true.
- 1:58:49Speaker 9: But I would.
- 1:58:50Speaker 7: I love I Love Lucy.
- 1:58:52Speaker 2: Which shows are there? You got Milton Berle on DVD.
- 1:58:56Speaker 7: That man, he knew his comedy.
- 1:58:58Speaker 2: Giant penis.
- 1:58:59Speaker 8: That's all I know about him. A complete aside. I
- 1:59:03Speaker 8: read an article that talked about how it's cool to
- 1:59:07Speaker 8: say that TV shows are getting dumber and dumber and
- 1:59:11Speaker 8: making people stupid. And it's completely not true. Because if
- 1:59:16Speaker 8: you look at TV shows from the 50s, the plot
- 1:59:20Speaker 8: you started with was the plot you ended with. And
- 1:59:22Speaker 8: then they would have maybe a little bit at the
- 1:59:25Speaker 8: beginning of A plot, nothing but B plot, and then
- 1:59:28Speaker 8: come back to A plot at the very end. And nowadays,
- 1:59:32Speaker 8: I mean, you watch a TV show, you've got to
- 1:59:34Speaker 8: keep track of characters from previous seasons and arcs from
- 1:59:38Speaker 8: previous stuff, and it is now much more complex to
- 1:59:42Speaker 8: consume the media that we consume than it ever used
- 1:59:44Speaker 8: to be.
- 1:59:45Speaker 7: I think it's hit and miss. I think there are.
- 1:59:47Speaker 8: I think the good shows.
- 1:59:48Speaker 7: I think it's both sides. There are huge peaks of
- 1:59:51Speaker 7: some of the best television that's ever been made right now,
- 1:59:54Speaker 7: and some of the worst television ever existed.
- 1:59:56Speaker 8: Well, yeah, you don't need to keep track of a
- 1:59:58Speaker 8: lot of things to watch Survivor, but.
- 2:00:00Speaker 1: You know.
- 2:00:00Speaker 7: Well, I mean, it's tons of reality. It's tons of bad,
- 2:00:04Speaker 7: sensationalized bullshit, entertainment-y shows. Like, there's stuff that's on television
- 2:00:11Speaker 7: that doesn't qualify as good television. Or even television sometimes.
- 2:00:15Speaker 7: It's just a thing that happens to fill some time
- 2:00:18Speaker 7: because we have way too many channels that run 24
- 2:00:20Speaker 7: hours a day. So I think it's both. I think
- 2:00:23Speaker 7: there is a huge amount of stuff and the bulk
- 2:00:26Speaker 7: of that is probably still crap or just reruns of
- 2:00:28Speaker 7: old stuff we've got. But there are some amazing new
- 2:00:32Speaker 7: shows coming out. And some of it's like on even
- 2:00:36Speaker 7: network brings some pretty good stuff if you watch for
- 2:00:39Speaker 7: the right things. You have to find them, but I
- 2:00:42Speaker 7: don't know. It's just such a new world with all
- 2:00:44Speaker 7: of the new options now that I'm wondering where do
- 2:00:48Speaker 7: we go from here? Can they continue to do that,
- 2:00:50Speaker 7: or is it all going to have to change with
- 2:00:53Speaker 7: these new systems that are employed?
- 2:00:56Speaker 2: As long as I don't have to read a book,
- 2:00:57Speaker 2: I'll be fine.
- 2:00:58Speaker 7: There we go. That's the moral of this story. Watch movies.
- 2:01:02Speaker 7: Show me it. Go watch a series-based television show.
- 2:01:06Speaker 2: I've actually gotten really into audio drama lately.
- 2:01:10Speaker 7: As long as you can download them like a podcast.
- 2:01:15Speaker 7: Speaking of which, we should wrap this one up. We've
- 2:01:17Speaker 7: been going on.
- 2:01:18Speaker 2: A little long here. We could have watched the movie
- 2:01:25Speaker 2: again in the time we took talking about it.
- 2:01:28Speaker 4: Holy crap.
- 2:01:30Speaker 7: With that, I think we should wrap it up. Thank
- 2:01:33Speaker 7: you for coming along on this epic Star Wars. Like
- 2:01:35Speaker 7: I said, one simple episode was not going to even
- 2:01:39Speaker 7: start to cover it. I was right. Here we are.
- 2:01:42Speaker 7: So thank you for coming on this epic Star Wars journey. Otherwise,
- 2:01:47Speaker 7: that about does it. We will return. Next time, same
- 2:01:50Speaker 7: geek feed. Thanks for listening.
- 2:01:52Speaker 2: I should be happy about Star Wars.
- 2:01:55Speaker 11: But just like blue milk, I feel blue.
- 2:01:58Speaker 12: Because what if it's a mess? I can't help but
- 2:02:02Speaker 12: obsess about all the horrible crap they could do. They
- 2:02:09Speaker 12: could give life savers to Ewoks, make Boba Fett have
- 2:02:13Speaker 12: a talking dog friend, Product placement would be sad, plot
- 2:02:18Speaker 12: twist Lucas' own dad, And everyone high fives in the end, yeah!
- 2:02:24Speaker 12: They could shave all of the Wookiees, and dress them
- 2:02:30Speaker 12: up in business suits, athbar.
- 2:02:33Speaker 6: Says it's a wrap and then he.
- 2:02:35Speaker 12: Starts to rap and han said the cat sprays when
- 2:02:38Speaker 12: he chews oh did i do that oh i've been
- 2:02:42Speaker 12: burned so many times before green lantern prometheus two girls
- 2:02:46Speaker 12: one cup but star wars.
- 2:02:48Speaker 11: Is the one that i most adore please jj don't.
- 2:02:52Speaker 7: This up.
- 2:02:56Speaker 12: I don't know what's real anymore. Star Wars has become
- 2:03:01Speaker 12: my sad fixation. Mom wanted me to be a surgeon.
- 2:03:05Speaker 11: I'm 26 and still a comic collector. But never mind,
- 2:03:13Speaker 11: these movies could be awesome! A million force ghosts going
- 2:03:17Speaker 11: on a killing spree!
- 2:03:19Speaker 4: Giant space worms everywhere!
- 2:03:20Speaker 12: Chewie's grown back all his hair!
- 2:03:22Speaker 4: I'll camp out for a whole year just to see!
- 2:03:26Speaker 12: Star Wars Episode VII shot in IMAX and 3D and
- 2:03:30Speaker 12: starring me as Luke Skywalker's favorite son who gets the
- 2:03:33Speaker 12: best stuff like lightsabers made of gold!
- 2:03:36Speaker 11: And finally has sex!
