- 0:16Hour number two, Miller and Condon, welcome back, Iowa
- 0:19Sports Radio Network, wherever you're listing in the state of
- 0:21Iowa. Glad that you are.
- 0:22We'll take you until 2 off the bench.
- 0:25Coming up at 2O clock, Lucas Strain, 2 until 5.
- 0:28Let's get to our guys. David Kaplan.
- 0:31They're 15 minutes or so away from game three of the Reds Cubs
- 0:35series at Wrigley Field. Cappy joins us as the Cubs try
- 0:38to get one. My, Oh my.
- 0:39What a difference a few weeks can make.
- 0:41Cappy, what a difference in this team.
- 0:43How you doing? I'm doing good, man.
- 0:46Hoping they can find a way to win a baseball game today.
- 0:50Right now they're mired in a little bit of difficulty.
- 0:54They better get their head out of the you know what and get
- 0:56moving. Yeah, council still staying
- 0:58positive and what else can he do at this point?
- 1:01But maybe there is one thing he could do.
- 1:03Cap, where are you on Kyle Tucker?
- 1:04If he's as injured as you know a boog or or cone make it sound,
- 1:09what's he doing in the line up in the first place?
- 1:12Yeah, if he's injured, he shouldn't be playing and then
- 1:15you guys would know better than me because I haven't been to Des
- 1:18Moines this year. Is Owen Casey ready to come up
- 1:21right now and play right field? If you ask Tommy Birch and he
- 1:23sees every game, he says yes. And that's how I rely on for
- 1:27questions like this. I'm surprised.
- 1:30And I kind of you and I speculate, you know, that the
- 1:33Casey's Tucker insurance, if you will, if indeed he does sign
- 1:37somewhere else next year. But Birchy says he's absolutely
- 1:40ready. What are they waiting for?
- 1:42OK, then put Kyle Tucker on the injured list.
- 1:45Or, you know, give him two or three days off and bring Owen
- 1:48Casey up and stick him in right field.
- 1:51That's it. And if Kyle Tucker is healthy in
- 1:56a week, put Owen Casey in left field until he and a half
- 2:00decides it's time to hit. Make one of them.
- 2:03The DHI don't care, but I'm tired of watching Kyle Tucker go
- 2:07up and literally look like me at the plate.
- 2:10We will get to see Kate. Over matched.
- 2:12Yes, yeah. And they're not competitive at
- 2:14bats. And that's the thing.
- 2:16Certainly watching closer here after I got back the last couple
- 2:18of nights, it just guys up there flailing, don't have a game
- 2:21plan, don't look like they have a clue of what they're trying to
- 2:23do, and it's got to be incredibly frustrating.
- 2:26I want to go to Kate Horton, who we'll see here in a little bit.
- 2:29He, since the start of July, has an ERA of one point, 29.
- 2:32He's done that over 5 starts. He's given up no runs in four of
- 2:37those 5 starts, but he's a young pitcher.
- 2:40Do we know about an innings limit?
- 2:42Is there going to have to be a shutdown?
- 2:43Are they going to have to do a Mizaroski as he's sitting on the
- 2:4615 day IL? What's going to happen with
- 2:48Horton going forward and do we know a number for an innings
- 2:51target? Jed Hoyer has said, and he said
- 2:55it again yesterday, there is no target number.
- 2:59We're just going to watch him closely.
- 3:00Like he pitched really well the other day and he went 5 innings
- 3:05and had a lot of run and they went, you're done.
- 3:07So they're going to utilize him. If you told me it's September
- 3:12the 24th and they got to win that game to clinch the division
- 3:18or they've got to win that game to stay alive and it's Kate
- 3:21Orton's turn. I don't think there's going to
- 3:23be a it's 5 innings, you got to go, sorry.
- 3:27But right now I think they're going to be very careful with
- 3:29him, but they're going to use him.
- 3:31Yep, I, I agree with you. In fact, I think he's probably
- 3:34at this point if they make the playoffs and it's if at this
- 3:38point, because, well, they're not playing well, he would be
- 3:41the third guy I would think, right?
- 3:43It would be Imanaga was terrific last night, then Matthew Boyd,
- 3:45then Kate Orton. Right Cap.
- 3:49No question about it. No question.
- 3:51See, my whole problem with this thing is when you lost Justin
- 3:54Steele, I thought you had to show more urgency.
- 3:57And they didn't. Like they went after Adrian
- 4:01Houser and were one of three teams to offer him a Major
- 4:05League contract. It was the Seattle Mariners.
- 4:08It was the Chicago Cubs and the Chicago White Sox.
- 4:13And he was interested in the Cubs.
- 4:15He played for counsel. He was in the organization last
- 4:18August in the minors. And he said, you guarantee me a
- 4:22rotation spot. And Jed said, right now I can't.
- 4:26If one opens, you'll get it and we'll use you a lot.
- 4:29And he said, yeah, Mariners told me the same thing, So I'm
- 4:32signing with the White Sox. And so he had a really good run
- 4:36with the White Sox, and then they traded him and got whatever
- 4:39they got for him. The Cubs, like a week or 10 days
- 4:43later, Imanaga goes down with an injury and it's gone seven
- 4:46weeks. Had he signed, he would have
- 4:48gone right into the rotation. But you know, if you're not
- 4:52going to give it to him, I think you had to show more urgency
- 4:55than they did. And the Mike Soroka acquisition
- 4:59is a train wreck. The fan base is upset.
- 5:02We saw the velocity going down. What's how do you come back from
- 5:06that? I mean, how can you explain that
- 5:07one where you see a guy that has struggled with injuries
- 5:10throughout the course of his career, three straight starts
- 5:13velocities down and that's basically all you do for the
- 5:15rotation. How can the front office, how do
- 5:18you sell that to the fan base? What they did, yeah or didn't
- 5:23do, I don't think you can sell it to the fan base because if
- 5:27you've lost me, you've lost everybody.
- 5:30Because I'm as big a die hard as there is.
- 5:33I'm not telling you that I'm the biggest.
- 5:35I'll tell you I'm as big a Cub fan as anybody out there.
- 5:38And when you go get what they got and not push any type of
- 5:43chips in, that is, in my opinion, malpractice.
- 5:48Now, I don't know if that was Jed's fault.
- 5:50I don't know if he's moving at the direction of Tom Ricketts
- 5:53and the family, But I find it hard to believe that the Chicago
- 5:58Cubs wouldn't take on some type of a decent contract.
- 6:03I'm not asking to take on Shohail Thani's money.
- 6:05They didn't. Or Jacob degrom's money, They
- 6:08didn't. He didn't get moved.
- 6:09But you're telling me you couldn't have outbid the Tigers
- 6:13for Charlie Morton? You couldn't outbid the Rangers
- 6:16for Meryl Kelly, who, by the way, already have the best
- 6:18pitching, and they said we're not sure we better get another
- 6:22one. You couldn't outbid the Mariners
- 6:24for Eugenio Suarez again. It's just it borders on
- 6:28ridiculousness, what we watch. Did you have a problem with him
- 6:31Inaga coming out as well as he was pitching when he did?
- 6:34The Shays speculated when he came out for the 7th inning that
- 6:38he was just going to face Delaware Cruz because they
- 6:40wanted him to sit down to hit rather from the right side and
- 6:43that he wouldn't been surprised if he, you know, gets pulled
- 6:45after that. And that's exactly what
- 6:47happened. Were you surprised him Inaga
- 6:49came out when he did yesterday, Cap?
- 6:51No, I was surprised they let him go back out.
- 6:53All right, Belly De la Cruz, he was at he finished the day at 92
- 6:57pitches. How many more pitches were we
- 6:59going to let him go? And let's assume you let him go
- 7:03to one O 5110 and he gets through the 7th and so it's
- 7:09still A11 game. Well, guess what?
- 7:11The Cubs never scored again, so it really didn't matter.
- 7:15And how far you going to let him go?
- 7:17I'm not letting him go 130, not here in August.
- 7:21Told me it's late September and I'm trying to win the division
- 7:25or make the playoffs. All right, we can have that
- 7:27discussion today. No, I had no problem.
- 7:30With it one more on baseball before we go to football.
- 7:32The Milwaukee 5 game series captain.
- 7:34I mean, I'm, I'm so excited about it.
- 7:37I got it next week. It's two weeks away.
- 7:40I'm wondering if it's going to mean anything at that point cop
- 7:42the way this team's going. Milwaukee's playing is literally
- 7:49insane. I've never seen anything like
- 7:51it, but nor have Brewers fans. It's record setting.
- 7:54They've never done this in the history of their franchise.
- 7:58So it is literally amazing to me that that team's playing as well
- 8:03as they are. And they let Willie Adamas walk,
- 8:05they let Corbin Burns walk, and they didn't have Brandon
- 8:08Woodruff for a long time. And now Miss Zorowski's on the
- 8:11injured list. I don't know how long it could
- 8:14keep up, but right now they are the best team in baseball and
- 8:17it's not close. Absolutely wild.
- 8:20So we've been joking this week about our algorithms when we get
- 8:23on social media, get on Twitter, and it depends on you click on
- 8:25one thing and all of a sudden, so I have one account that has
- 8:29been all positive Caleb Williams stories.
- 8:30The other account is all the negative Caleb Williams story.
- 8:33So I'm good. You're going to be the
- 8:34tiebreaker here for me. Kathy.
- 8:36What should I be reading right now about Caleb Williams?
- 8:38What should we believe? Because depending on where
- 8:41you're shopping, you can find both stories on his start.
- 8:44You can. Yesterday was his best day of
- 8:47training camp and it was also the most physical practice.
- 8:51The bears of Adsense. At least Lovey Smith and maybe
- 8:54going back to Mike Ditka. That's a fact.
- 8:57Yeah. They had I think 4 fights break
- 9:00out. They're tackling guys to the
- 9:02ground like Matt Eberfuss, Matt Nagy, John Fox, Mark Trussman.
- 9:07They never did any of this. And I asked somebody if there
- 9:11what if guy gets hurt? They said it's football that
- 9:13happens. We're changing the culture and
- 9:16that's why we're doing this. And go watch the Montez Sweat
- 9:19interview. It's on the NFL Network.
- 9:22You can pull it up on social. It's Stacey Dales and Brian
- 9:26Baldinger with Montez Sweat. And he said we are having more
- 9:30full padded, full contact practices in this training camp
- 9:34that he had his entire career in seven years.
- 9:38Yeah, I heard reporters a long time, reporters kept saying is
- 9:41the most physical practice they've ever seen and not just
- 9:45when they were covering the Bears, if they were covering
- 9:46teams prior to them getting to Chicago.
- 9:48I want to ask you about the running back from Rutgers.
- 9:50How do you say his name and angle the seventh round?
- 9:53Manung Guy. Manung guy, he's opening some
- 9:57eyes there Cap that he could be RB2.
- 10:00I mean, has he moved up? Is he the next man in behind
- 10:04Swift, do you think? Is he that is he had that kind
- 10:06of camp? I don't know, maybe that's what
- 10:08he's having a really good camp. Maybe that's why Roshan Johnson
- 10:11was so good in goal line yesterday.
- 10:15He ran 2 touchdowns. He got into a fist fight.
- 10:18He said that dude was playing with a real chip on his
- 10:21shoulder. So maybe that's why maybe he
- 10:23sees, you know, his football mortality, so to speak, flashed
- 10:27in front of his eyes. But Mananga, I think I'll start
- 10:30the season as running back three.
- 10:32There's absolutely a chance that he could move up that list.
- 10:36And that would be exciting. He's a guy, another one of those
- 10:39guys from Rutgers seems to run a little harder and he's got a
- 10:42little extra edge to his game. Now, we've had a week of this
- 10:45now the Micah Parsons back and forth, him and Jerry, Jerry
- 10:48Jones is apparently upset that he thought they had an
- 10:51agreement. He's talking to a 25 year old
- 10:53kid. I just I'm absolutely baffled.
- 10:54But one of the teams always on this list is the Bears could
- 10:57make a move. Any hope.
- 10:58I mean, are we talking a 2% chance, 1/2 percent chance, any
- 11:02chance at all that Micah Parsons could be a Bear?
- 11:06I mean, I think they would definitely have interest in that
- 11:09deal. Tell me what it would cost first
- 11:13of all. Two first and a third.
- 11:16Two first and a third. They would do that in a second,
- 11:18yeah. What was Khalil Mackin about?
- 11:21That. Yeah, about that, right.
- 11:22Yeah. Now if someone told me it would
- 11:24be Jaylen Johnson, two first and a third, I'm not sure I'm doing
- 11:28that. But if you said two first and a
- 11:32third round pick and a A4 done, they were talking about a 26
- 11:37year old Hall of Fame bound pass rusher that you put him on your
- 11:42defense, I believe you then become the favorite in the
- 11:46division. What's going wrong?
- 11:49Everything can't be going smooth.
- 11:50They're hearing a lot of good stuff.
- 11:51Cap, What's maybe the concern with Johnson, with his defense
- 11:54or with his offense? What still concerns him?
- 11:57Cap, what are you hearing? I think it's the sloppiness at
- 12:01times from the offense where they don't get in and out of the
- 12:04huddle quick enough. They don't know everything's
- 12:08being filmed at practice and that way they can look at
- 12:13everything every night and go. That guy was a yard off and he
- 12:17jumps them. Sweat.
- 12:19Sweat said yesterday that when you make a mistake, everything's
- 12:24being filmed, he said. All of a sudden you sit down in
- 12:27the meeting room with the whole team and he puts it on the big
- 12:31screen, Ben Johnson, and he annihilates you.
- 12:33He doesn't go Montez. You know, next time, maybe it'd
- 12:37be better if you move over just, you know, half a yard.
- 12:40That's not how it is. He absolutely crushes you in
- 12:44front of the whole team, he said.
- 12:46And that make sure the next time, uh oh, I better line up
- 12:49properly. So I love the way the culture is
- 12:52changing. It's been about freaking time.
- 12:54Accountability boys about. To run things that way.
- 12:57Accountability we overdo. Accountability.
- 13:00We saw this younger guy over on the sidelines with the Lions.
- 13:04I mean, he got goofball Campbell running things right and doing
- 13:07his thing and doing his motivation and all that.
- 13:09Did we know he was this type of red ass?
- 13:11I mean, was this something that we knew about Bed Johnson?
- 13:14Because I at least before we started to learn about him now
- 13:17as the head coach, I just thought this was a nice easy
- 13:19going guy. Did you know this kind of
- 13:23background that that he his personality appears different
- 13:25than maybe what we were sold when he was in Detroit?
- 13:30Did I know? I don't know if I knew but then
- 13:33I read Dan Skippers quotes the backup O Lyman who they use
- 13:37sometimes the leak out in past past reception and he said you
- 13:42better put a 5 yard boundary around Ben Johnson in game or in
- 13:46practice because you do not want to be on the wrong side of that
- 13:49dude. He is as intense and as
- 13:52passionate about his craft as they come, and now we're seeing
- 13:57that. And I'm sure he walked in here
- 13:59and went OK, what the hell has been going on around here for
- 14:03the past several years? Because it's over.
- 14:06The party is over, nobody's bringing breakfast into meetings
- 14:10anymore. This dude is laying the law down
- 14:13and good for him. Yeah.
- 14:14So kind of what's the when it comes to the division, it's
- 14:18extremely tough. I still I'm not sold on the
- 14:21Packers get a lot of pushback that that I'm crazy there.
- 14:24I got the Packers finished and last.
- 14:25How then you and I are on the same page.
- 14:28Where do we what? What's realistic for the Bears
- 14:30this year? Cap.
- 14:32Ten and seven is realistic, Absolutely.
- 14:36Could they go 9 and 8? Sure.
- 14:37Could they go 8:00 and 9:00 with some injuries?
- 14:39Sure. I don't think they're a 12 and
- 14:41five team, but I do think they're going to have a much
- 14:45improved team simply because they got the right coach.
- 14:48What about the two drafts, their first two draft picks, Loveland
- 14:51and Burden? I'm hearing Burden's finally
- 14:52starting to open some eyes in a positive way.
- 14:56What about Loveland and Burden? Your thoughts?
- 14:59Loveland is looking outstanding at training camp.
- 15:03I mean, outstanding. Burden took him a while to get
- 15:08on the field because he had a soft tissue injury.
- 15:11And then, you know, the first day he was out there, I think
- 15:14Ben wanted to make a point. A young man.
- 15:17Yeah. You're behind.
- 15:20Since then, this dude has been really, really good.
- 15:24Flashing has been like to say, that guy's been flashing here in
- 15:28practice. He looks like a stud.
- 15:30I have had an uncomfortable infatuation with him back in his
- 15:32days in Missouri and very excited to see what can do if he
- 15:36can put it all together there. Ken mentioned the division, so
- 15:40the Vikings Monday Night Football Week 1 is going to be
- 15:43the opponent. They come to Soldier Field.
- 15:45Normally these two teams split, as I know very well watching
- 15:49this series very closely throughout the years.
- 15:51And now there'll be no Jordan Addison out there.
- 15:53It'll be JJ McCarthy's first real start of the season.
- 15:57Vegas has this as a coin flip, a slight favorite one way or the
- 16:01other. Bears may be favored by a point.
- 16:03I'll tell you it's Week 1. We're still talking about a
- 16:05month ahead. I love the Bears in this spot.
- 16:08To get off to a good start, you have peek ahead to week one
- 16:11against the Vikings. I look at that Viking game and
- 16:16you have no Jordan Addison. I know Justin Jefferson hasn't
- 16:20practiced yet, but do you believe Justin Jefferson is not
- 16:24going to find his way on the field?
- 16:25By what I think. Like if you told me, oh God,
- 16:30that guys out too. We'll throw a party in Chicago.
- 16:34Not at his misfortune, at our good fortune, but losing Jordan
- 16:38Addison's a big loss. And then I keep hearing about
- 16:41the up and down camp of JJ McCarthy.
- 16:43So is he going to be ready to roll on Monday Night Football?
- 16:48That's probably the biggest question, how the Bears will
- 16:52handle him and how he will handle the Bears.
- 16:57Cap Great stuff, as always. Reds and Cubs coming up here
- 17:01that should be getting under way.
- 17:02And then off to Saint Louis for the weekend.
- 17:04A series that takes on a whole life of its own as far as the
- 17:07Cubs go. Fascinating stuff.
- 17:09Love sports, incredible theatre. Cap our good stuff, buddy.
- 17:13We'll talk to you next week. Thank you.
- 17:14I'll see you next Wednesday. Yes, and what do you mean?
- 17:18I mean, I'll talk to. You OK?
- 17:20I thought you were coming. Ken was getting excited.
- 17:22Absolutely talk to you when I was.
- 17:24Thinking about driving up there just to get a milkshake at the
- 17:26Drake Diner, but. It's on us if you do.
- 17:30OK pal, good to talk to you. See you buddy.

- 18:148:00 until noon so they are open if you can't make it during the
- 18:17week. NFL Films does a great job.
- 18:21Yes, Hard Knocks debuted last night.
- 18:23Yes, I watched it. You did start to finish.
- 18:28I didn't get there. I made it through the half.
- 18:31It sucked. It's all Josh Allen.
- 18:33That was the first part of. It it's awful.
- 18:35The most compelling part, and I don't think he got to it, was AJ
- 18:37Upanessa I. Didn't see that.
- 18:38Yet fighting a snake? You'll get to that.
- 18:41Well, right off the bat trend, you mean, you know, you know how
- 18:44they usually start the show. I'll never forget what I
- 18:46believe. I should never forget.
- 18:48I forgot. It's the sprinklers at Houston's
- 18:53training camp. And all of a sudden you see the
- 18:55silhouette coming of this great big behemoth of a dude.
- 18:58And it's JJ Watt carrying his gear and the sound of the water,
- 19:03the water sprinklers go. And that's incredible sound and
- 19:06visual. They got the soundboard clap
- 19:09scene one Josh Allen. Josh Allen's boring.
- 19:13He's a good football. Player and a good guy.
- 19:15Yeah, he's a. Good guy.
- 19:17He's a good dude. Yeah, it was awful.
- 19:20You're gonna sell. It was awful.
- 19:22It was as bad of an episode 1. It's a it's a right of summer,
- 19:27right? We're making our way through.
- 19:28I get excited for, even if it's not the most compelling, I
- 19:31enjoy. I didn't enjoy it last night.
- 19:32Will you watch Episode 2? I will, But they're on three and
- 19:36four. No, they're on thin ice.
- 19:38But. And I was.
- 19:39I was really. I was, I was upset last night.
- 19:42I was like I just wasted an hour of my time. 57 minutes, I'm
- 19:44sure. Of this stupid show.
- 19:47It was dumb. It was not compelling, it was
- 19:49not interesting. I was upset.
- 19:50So I never watched it live. I watched it this morning
- 19:52because I watched. I don't know what game I was
- 19:54watching last night. West Coast game.
- 19:55So I needed a pallet cleanser and I'm searching to do so.
- 19:59I'm looking and then I remember I had saw something.
- 20:02I had probably scrolled through my phone at some point of a new
- 20:06documentary on Netflix. About the SEC.
- 20:11What's it called? Any given Saturday, yeah, I
- 20:15believe is the title of it. It's about last season.
- 20:19Episode 1's a lot about LSU, but there are going to be other
- 20:21people involved. I didn't get through it all but
- 20:24this. Did you see any Nebraska
- 20:26receivers in the episode? That's for this year.
- 20:30This year, right this. It looks good.
- 20:33Is going to get you is it? I watched about 20 minutes of
- 20:36it. I wanted to watch more but I
- 20:37needed to get to bed. It was how many?
- 20:40Episodes are there. Don't know.
- 20:42You're asking me a question. I haven't got that deep.
- 20:44It was late. His voice, I heard his voice
- 20:47over at one point, yes. And I don't know if he's
- 20:50interviewed or anything like that.
- 20:51Again, this was it's called SEC football Any Given Saturday on
- 20:55Netflix. This is going to supplant Hard
- 20:59Knocks for us. I guarantee it, because you're
- 21:02going to watch the rest of Hard Knocks and you're going to be
- 21:03disappointed. Well, I was so far with the 20
- 21:05minutes that I saw this morning of it, it's all Josh Allen.
- 21:09This afternoon, get your work done a little bit early.
- 21:12Flip on Episode 1 of SEC Football Any Given Saturday
- 21:17because we love college. Foot we do, and there's very few
- 21:19baseball games tonight. I mean, everything is during the
- 21:21day today. And tomorrow there's not much
- 21:22either, so maybe we can get a couple episodes.
- 21:24Well. There's NFL football tomorrow
- 21:25night, but I will watch that show SC any given Saturday.
- 21:29Any given Saturday on Netflix. Scott Reister is going to join
- 21:32us next by with, by the way, Ray Cole, our friend, former
- 21:35television executive AVP over at ABC based in Des Moines, he ran
- 21:41WOI. Ray's going to come in studio
- 21:43with Trent and I tomorrow to help us out with the NFLESPN
- 21:47deal. Look forward to that.
- 21:48That's at one O clock tomorrow and other television related
- 21:52stuff with Ray. But love the yearly conversation
- 21:55with him and it's very timely with ESPN and the NFL getting
- 21:59together. That'll be one O clock tomorrow.
- 22:01Ray Cole in studio with us, Scott Reister.
- 22:04He's plays a big role promoting the Shot in the Dark golf
- 22:08tournament, the 38th annual August 15th.
- 22:11This year it's at Terrace Hills. All proceeds go to preventing
- 22:15blindness and Reister will tell us more about that if he.
- 22:19Of course, he is the sports director over at KCCI Channel 8
- 22:23here in Des Moines. 125, Miller and Condon talking sports with
- 22:27you. Thanks for being with us.
- 22:28It's the Iowa Sports Radio Network.
- 22:34I'm Hillary Conlon. Welcome back.
- 22:35Just past 130 on a Wednesday will take you until 215 minutes
- 22:40or so away from Trent's plays of the day.
- 22:43Circus sports sponsor, those guy by the name is Zach Cox, covers
- 22:47the Patriots for the Boston Herald.
- 22:50He just tweeted that Mike Vrabel, their head coach, is
- 22:53bleeding from the face after diving into a pile to prevent a
- 22:56fight. He's got that.
- 22:59Take the linebacker out of the coach.
- 23:01Whatever that expression he was, he was a tough SOB.
- 23:04Yes, he was. He was a good player too.
- 23:05What do you have like 8 touchdowns?
- 23:08But they were all receiving time.
- 23:09Do you remember? That many I.
- 23:10Think it was a bunch. A bunch of He'd be on the field
- 23:14and Brady would find him. A little trickeration from that
- 23:18Josh Mcblunder and company over there.
- 23:20Scott Reister is here. He's with the partners with a
- 23:25shot in the dark. He's the kind of the media
- 23:27behind this over the good folks at KCCI Channel 830.
- 23:32Eighth annual is coming up on the 15th of August this year.
- 23:35It's at Terrace Hills, right. So you've been involved in this
- 23:37for for quite a while now. Good to see you again.
- 23:40Great to have. Great to you guys.
- 23:42Have me on. Thank you.
- 23:43Yeah, it's been really fun. I am not a golfer.
- 23:46Do do try though in this event. Try and I fail yes yes,
- 23:50thankfully it's right up my alley.
- 23:51So if you're listening to this about night golf and you're
- 23:53interested, this is the event for you.
- 23:55Whether you're a serious player and you want to win like some of
- 23:57my friends like Will Rogers and Pete Jeffries, they show up to
- 23:59win baby or you're like me where it's like best ball.
- 24:02This is my chance to where people won't hate me well.
- 24:04You can. Nobody can see it because it's
- 24:06dark. That's the beauty of it, right?
- 24:08Yeah. It's so much fun.
- 24:09Yeah. You get out there and that's why
- 24:10I love it. You go out, you screw around,
- 24:12you can take it serious or not. And you golf at night, raise
- 24:15money. It's all good.
- 24:15Stuff. No, it is, yes.
- 24:16I asked Trent about this earlier in the when we've gone over the
- 24:20show list to start the show, and he said isn't, isn't, is it more
- 24:23fun to wait for dark because you guys will tee off?
- 24:26They'll still be a little bit of light, right?
- 24:28But once the sun goes down and it's pitch black outside, that's
- 24:30when it really gets fun. Right.
- 24:31It really does. And yeah, if you're listening,
- 24:33the event is coming up next Friday, August 15th at Terrace
- 24:37Hills and Altoona. It is a beautifully renovated
- 24:40golf course and we're moving it out there this year.
- 24:42Last year the event was great. We had 120 golfers.
- 24:45So it's a big party atmosphere. It's $85.
- 24:49You get your drink tickets, your dinner, your nine holes of golf,
- 24:52your glow balls, your glow sticks, all the stuff you need
- 24:55to have a great time for Prevent blindness Iowa.
- 24:57Great charity. So, and I just retweeted that
- 24:59out. Ask our rice for no cakes and no
- 25:00accounts have tweeted out also. So, yeah, as you're listening to
- 25:03this conversation, if you're interested, we'd love to have
- 25:05you out there. And as you mentioned, as it gets
- 25:07dark, that's when the fun begins.
- 25:08I like to, you know, hit my normal sucky shot and then
- 25:11everyone scream like it was a, you know, the best shot they've
- 25:13ever seen and just lie to people.
- 25:15So the other foursomes on the course think they're in trouble,
- 25:17but it is so fun wandering around in pitch black.
- 25:20You got your flashlight. Oh, pro tip, bring a flashlight
- 25:22if you're coming in some bug spray.
- 25:23And yeah, it's just awesome. It's so much fun.
- 25:26I played in it twice and the favorite part, and I'm not a
- 25:29very good golfer myself either, but when you hit when, when it's
- 25:33finally dark and it's usually what about the last three holes
- 25:35that it's really dark at that point.
- 25:38And if you hit one good shot, that's enough to just see that
- 25:41ball sailing through the air through the darkness.
- 25:44You can hear other people on the course.
- 25:46It is an event. I played in a lot of golf
- 25:48events. It's an event unlike anything
- 25:50that you do before so, and that's a fun one, Scott.
- 25:52And that's what I love what you guys do.
- 25:54It's for a great cause for for great people.
- 25:56But how many golf tournaments are out there?
- 25:58You get your forcing together. You go out there, you have a
- 26:00couple of beers, you have some fun and you you make a bed that
- 26:04your wife yells at you when you get home.
- 26:05This is different, right? This is completely different
- 26:08because it's a different way of golfing.
- 26:10You don't have to be a great golfer and it's something that
- 26:12not a lot of people have experienced.
- 26:13Yeah, if you're like me at the stage of life where it's hard to
- 26:16carve out that Friday night, well, this is for charity.
- 26:19I'm sorry. You know, I got to go to this
- 26:20for charity. What do you want me to do?
- 26:21So. And it's not just for guys.
- 26:23We have a lot of girls, couples, young people, old.
- 26:25I think you last for that reason.
- 26:27Yeah, guys, gals get to be a Friday night.
- 26:30Yeah, it's awesome. It's a Trent's point, you know,
- 26:31when you're out golfing, if you golf as rare as I do, just
- 26:34hitting one shot in your entire round makes you so excited,
- 26:37right? That one good drive.
- 26:38Amplify that by 100 when that ball you're hitting is now a
- 26:41shooting star against the black sky.
- 26:43It is just so cool. Everybody.
- 26:45Just the oh and ah factor is there.
- 26:47It's really fun. So when you do get to those last
- 26:50three holes, you know, obviously you've got to get from the green
- 26:52to the next T box. That's when the flashlight would
- 26:55come in handy, right? Because there are there.
- 26:57Are there any type of lighting out there to get you to the next
- 27:00hole? Yes, we have volunteers that
- 27:02mark the holes with Yeah. So along the holes there's a
- 27:05couple different poles that have some glow sticks dangling, and
- 27:08then you see they do mark the hole on the green with the glow
- 27:12sticks. So you kind of have an idea of
- 27:14where you're. Aiming.
- 27:14You're not going to end up just driving into the water.
- 27:17Well, I you'll still drive into the water if you're me right,
- 27:20But it's not because you don't know where you're aiming the
- 27:22ball. So it's but it's definitely a
- 27:24very neat. Vision.
- 27:24Yeah. I didn't mean driving with the
- 27:26Golf Club. I'm in the golf carts.
- 27:28Right, yes. And actually there's, I'm glad
- 27:29you brought this up. There's no golf.
- 27:31Carts. No carts, and if you have a
- 27:33pushcart, bring them. Terrace Hills doesn't have any,
- 27:35so bring your own pushcart because people want to, don't
- 27:37want to carry the bag. Or if you're like me, you don't
- 27:39even own any decent clubs, so you just bum a club off Jason
- 27:42Sudeiko who's in your foursome and just so don't even bring
- 27:45your clubs, just show. Show up like a schlub like me.
- 27:47Bring up bring A7 iron and just play the whole course that way
- 27:49that. Somebody else's clubs, other
- 27:50people's clubs, OPC. Yes.
- 27:52Hey Scott, can you tell us a little bit more about Prevent
- 27:55Blindness Iowa and what they what they strive to do across
- 27:58the great state of. Iowa.
- 27:59Oh yeah, I'd love to. I mean, last year over 20,000
- 28:02vision screenings completely free to kids across the state.
- 28:05It's a operation on a shoestring budget and it's events like
- 28:09this. And then there's a walk earlier
- 28:10in the summer and O'cakes knows a fabulous media partner for
- 28:12Prevent Blindness Iowa. So really this, these two events
- 28:15and some donations throughout the year are what funds the
- 28:18quality of life for all these vision screenings that are
- 28:20happening. These problems are caught in
- 28:22kids early. They don't even know they have
- 28:23them because that's just how they've lived their lives.
- 28:25Get glasses on these kids. It changes their lives as they
- 28:28realize, oh, behavior problems or learning problems because
- 28:30they're glasses, so and they also catch problems that could
- 28:33lead to blindness. So it's a crucial service not a
- 28:35lot of people think about, but the need is there and what
- 28:38better way to help it out? Then have some fun.
- 28:41Down the registration, go out and have a great time next
- 28:43Friday night. Absolutely.
- 28:45All right, we'll get back to that in a second.
- 28:46We are on the cusp of a football on Friday night with football,
- 28:51right? So I'm guessing vacations.
- 28:53Jeff's had his, Shannon's had hers, you've had yours.
- 28:56What are the plans at KCCI for Friday nights this year?
- 28:59It is going to be so much fun. We're rebranding Friday night
- 29:02high. We've had football Friday night
- 29:03forever, but this year we're going Friday night hype.
- 29:06So I sadly the biggest loss is my polo shirt would no longer
- 29:09apply. I got to get a new polo.
- 29:11But yeah, it's going to encompass our basketball
- 29:13coverages also. And we are just going all out
- 29:15Friday nights from about 10:15 to 10:30, cramming in the top,
- 29:18you know, 11 or so 12 games even on to the highlights.
- 29:21We've got our live shots at 4-5 and six going to our game of the
- 29:24week. We also have our wild card pole,
- 29:26which is so much fun. And what we do with that is on
- 29:29Mondays during high school football season, I'll pick 3
- 29:32games that we might not normally get to, whether it's.
- 29:34Like so small schools. Smaller schools maybe from like
- 29:373A on down that might not get that coverage.
- 29:39And it's a fan vote on Facebook. It's awesome.
- 29:41So the communities, those communities all jump in.
- 29:44And then Wednesday we announce the winner, which vote had the
- 29:47most, and then we send out a crew and spotlight them as well.
- 29:50So it's an added element that we do, and it's really a lot of fun
- 29:53because it's just about getting these communities on TV that we
- 29:55don't always get to. Speaking of high school sports,
- 29:58you guys just wrapped up a couple weeks ago with state
- 30:00softball with a ton of local teams, teams in Fort Dodge, not
- 30:05hop, skip and a jump. Plus you had 3A and 4A baseball
- 30:08in Sioux City. So do you guys work with like
- 30:11your CBS partners? How does that work for you guys?
- 30:13Because we know how Staffs are trimmed.
- 30:15We know here and you guys know it's not like the old days.
- 30:19How are you able to do 2 major events that are really important
- 30:22to the communities and do it in Sioux City and Fort Dodge while
- 30:25you're based in Des? Moines And don't forget about
- 30:26the 1A and 2A bracket of state baseball in Carroll.
- 30:29We had three. It was insane.
- 30:31It was, it was actually a lot of fun.
- 30:32And yeah, definitely you coordinate and there's no longer
- 30:35CBS affiliate in Sioux City. That CBS station actually closed
- 30:38down a couple years ago. So that's one less asset we have
- 30:40to coordinate things with. But we have other people we work
- 30:43with. I know the CBS affiliate KGAN in
- 30:45Cedar Rapids, they're going to different tournaments throughout
- 30:47also. And then we can use, you know,
- 30:49look at the streams and run some highlights.
- 30:51So it definitely is a matter of picking and choosing and trying
- 30:54to be live on the news when those moments happened.
- 30:57If you can kind of play the chess board, right, it works
- 30:59out. It can't be everywhere, but we
- 31:01were able to be live five and Joaquin Northwest softball was
- 31:03hosting the trophy. That was so much fun to be able
- 31:05to do that. And then Shannon was out there
- 31:07when the Pleasantville baseball team, an incredible story.
- 31:10Shout out Pleasantville if you're listening.
- 31:11Just one loss all season. First championship for that high
- 31:14school on the boys side in any boys program.
- 31:17And so, yeah, we were live in Carroll and then we were able to
- 31:19be out there in Fort Dodge and then we didn't have a 4A or a
- 31:25three a winner right at Sioux City this year.
- 31:26So that kind of took care of that as well on the final.
- 31:28Day it was easy on my partner right and.
- 31:30He got back from Vegas and thought I was going to have to
- 31:32hop in the car to Sioux City, and that was not the case,
- 31:35right? And.
- 31:36As we grumble though, the reason that we're doing this dance is
- 31:38because a couple years ago when the IHSAA established Dead Week,
- 31:41or when I should say both they and the Girls Union, they moved
- 31:44that state baseball tournament back a week, if I'm not
- 31:47mistaken. So although it's chaotic week,
- 31:49it's fun and then it creates that week off for everybody.
- 31:52So I'll take some chaos followed by a vacation any day.
- 31:54Yeah, good stuff. All right, in our final couple
- 31:56of minutes here with you, let's go over the Shot in the Dark
- 31:592025 year #38 for this. How do folks, if they want to
- 32:03register, and they should, you had, what, 125 last year?
- 32:06You've limited it. This year it's 100 golfers.
- 32:09Is that right? I don't.
- 32:10Believe so? Is that what it says?
- 32:11Limited to 100 participants right in the printed material.
- 32:14I have in front of me. Forget what Ken said.
- 32:16We'll squeeze you in. Come on in.
- 32:18No, honestly, that might have to do with Terrace Hill because I
- 32:21mean, that golf course is amazing, but I haven't seen the
- 32:23layout of it this year. I do I don't know there is room.
- 32:25We're not at 100 yet, but sign up fast.
- 32:27It is next Friday. And if we do have that cut off,
- 32:30I would feel bad because it is super fun.
- 32:32If you're not on Twitter or Facebook, literally Google
- 32:35prevent blindness Iowa. You'll see it if you are on
- 32:37Facebook or Twitter. I've shared it Ken and Trink all
- 32:40KX and no personalities have shared it.
- 32:42And yeah, come on out night golf next Friday as long as you can
- 32:45get there by like 637. The dinner starts around 6:00
- 32:48and then the golfing starts around 7:30.
- 32:50We might have a putt putt contest also.
- 32:51Nice. And you go over the rules at
- 32:537:50. Rules Schmools.
- 32:55Yeah, they say not to use your glow.
- 32:57Use your You're supposed to use your glow ball the whole time.
- 32:59But you know, you can maybe wait because if you lose a lot of
- 33:02balls like me, they're expensive.
- 33:03And here's this other little nugget that's added to the rule.
- 33:06No private coolers allowed on the course.
- 33:09How about that? Buy your drinks there.
- 33:10Yeah, right, right. Support the golf course.
- 33:13So is there going to be like a cart on the course?
- 33:15I don't think so. You get that, You load it up
- 33:18beforehand, you go to the cart, you go inside, you buy your
- 33:22beer. Buy your can beer, put it in the
- 33:23bag. There you go.
- 33:24The clubhouse is amazing. I don't know if you've been
- 33:27there selling. There's going to be the party
- 33:28and the awards after and nice prizes.
- 33:31Yeah, so it is gorgeous. Come out it.
- 33:33It'll be a great time. Good stuff.
- 33:35Shot in the dark 2025. Best of luck to you.
- 33:39Wait. Well done by the way, doing this
- 33:41for as long as you have. It's fun.
- 33:42It's kind. Of the media face of it, indeed
- 33:44it is. Miller and Condon will be back.
- 33:46Trent's plays of the day, circus parts, circus sports sponsor.
- 33:50Those Scott Reister who's been with us from KCCI, Friday night
- 33:54hype. I like it.
- 33:55That's coming up here before we know it, Miller and Condon on
- 33:58the Iowa Sports Radio Network. I'm Millary Condon.
- 34:04Welcome back. Our thanks to Scott Reister for
- 34:06stopping by A Shot in the Dark 38th annual Coming up Terrace
- 34:10Hills a week from Friday mentioned Mike Vrabel jumping
- 34:15into a brawl and getting cut. I thought he had eight
- 34:19receptions, all of which went for touchdowns.
- 34:21I was in. I was mistaken.
- 34:23He caught 12 passes in the NFL. So I Googled, all of which went
- 34:27for touchdowns. Yes, after you said that I'm
- 34:29like 8. No way.
- 34:31Yeah, I was right. No short change to four.
- 34:34Isn't that crazy? That is unthinkable. 12
- 34:37touchdowns, all of them by the pass.
- 34:39Well he did catch one also on defence.
- 34:40Return to a pick for a pick 6. But what a what a just crazy,
- 34:47crazy stat. It is.
- 34:49I just can't understand how, hey, when he comes onto the
- 34:52field, how about right, we maybe cover the linebacker that comes
- 34:57trotting out there. Couldn't figure it out.
- 34:59The Reds and the Cubs in Wrigley, they feel they are
- 35:02playing in the top of the third inning.
- 35:04There is no score. Kate Horton is no hitter.
- 35:08Watch Trent. He's through 2 and 1/3.
- 35:09He has yet to give up a hit. The Cubs only have one hit.
- 35:12Say Suzuki has found a way to make the bat contact.
- 35:16The ball probably closed his eyes and got lucky there.
- 35:18Seemingly they have no clue this offense of the Cubs.
- 35:22All right, let's make some plays.
- 35:23Most of the games or a lot of the games, How many?
- 35:26Like 4 tonight? I want to say 5 tonight.
- 35:28Maybe not many eyes there. WNBA tonight.
- 35:31Be one game in the West tonight. It is a game I'll be playing.
- 35:34I'm going to grab the Valkyries and the 5 1/2 as they host the
- 35:38Aces who are starting to play better and the Valkyries are
- 35:40starting to look more like an expansion.
- 35:42Are they? I'm going to grab the points and
- 35:44I only got 1 baseball play since everything's already underway.
- 35:47Well, I've made a bad mistake, right?
- 35:49I've taken Atlanta over Milwaukee.
- 35:51Never bet against a streak. We're going to go back the other
- 35:54way. Gibby Quintana plus money was a
- 35:56+ 119 against Spencer Strider tonight.
- 36:00And the Bravos break up the Brew Crew.
- 36:03They are red hot. And then tomorrow we can bet on
- 36:07some football that sounds good. And what, there's three games
- 36:13tomorrow night? Is that what it is?
- 36:15In baseball, too. No, I mean in the NFL.
- 36:18Three, I think three. Yes, 3.
- 36:19Preseason games. All right, Benny just texted me.
- 36:22Give me credit. He was the one that came up with
- 36:23the stat. Thank you, Benny.
- 36:25He's our he's. Our Ben I I can do the same
- 36:27thing. I condition.
- 36:28I could also Google and I did. Betty slowed down over there.
- 36:32Well, I can't, Betty, so just send them to me.
- 36:36I got one look ahead play though.
- 36:38To which day to? The NFL tomorrow night.
- 36:40OK. So you got Bengals and Eagles?
- 36:43Yeah, Raiders and Seahawks. Yeah.
- 36:46Colts at Ravens. Ravens never lose in pre season.
- 36:49They're a huge underdog. They're a nearly touchdown
- 36:53underdog. At Circa, you can get the Ravens
- 36:55money line at plus 235. Who's starting a quarterback for
- 36:59the Colts? Are they playing both of their
- 37:00guys? Maybe, but what?
- 37:02Isn't Richardson banged up? I got to research.
- 37:04It more, but no, he can't be because I saw the report he had
- 37:07a really good practice like maybe yesterday or the day
- 37:10before. Daniel Jones going to play.
- 37:12They're even high on Riley Leonard of all people, honestly.
- 37:16Still. I get it.
- 37:17Ravens in the preseason. With you.
- 37:20At better than two to one, I'm going to throw that one in there
- 37:24at minimum. Because what was their streak of
- 37:26covering games? It's like it was in the 20s.
- 37:28Oh, absolutely, yeah, they were. Pre season games we're talking
- 37:31about. So.
- 37:32Richardson is starting the game tomorrow.
- 37:34Thank you, Lucas Strain. Put that one just in your back
- 37:36pocket because the Ravens, historically, and John Harbaugh
- 37:40has a left. No, he likes putting those ones
- 37:43in the window. Do you have many Ravens futures?
- 37:46Couple, yeah. I do too.
- 37:48I think I can't. I can't stop the Ravens.
- 37:49You know I'm. With you I can't stop the
- 37:51chargers. I got a pocket full of those as
- 37:53well. Good luck with those.
- 37:54And the Bengals. I got a couple of but yeah, good
- 37:57luck with your chargers. That will do it for us.
- 38:00Lucas Drain is next. He just text me.
- 38:01Daniel Jones is also playing, so maybe that's the reason for the
- 38:04elevated number. Thanks for being with us.
- 38:07Thanks to all of our guests. Look forward to tomorrow
- 38:10already. Ray Cole in studio on ESPN and
- 38:12the NFL merger. Look forward to Ray coming in.
- 38:15The off the bench is coming up next.
- 38:17Trent and I are with you every Monday through Friday.
- 38:19We talk sports with you on the IO Sports Radio Network from
- 38:22noon to 2. Miller and Continent talk to you
- 38:23tomorrow. Thank you.
