- 0:00Turn with me to Psalm 131, Psalm 131. I just
- 0:05want to read, I want to read one verse that I'm
- 0:09going to springboard off of and talk about something
- 0:14that I think is important in this hour. Psalm
- 0:23131 and verse 2. Surely I have calmed and quieted
- 0:34my soul like a weaned child with his mother.
- 0:42Like a weaned child is my soul within me. Isn't
- 0:49that powerful? I want to read it one more time.
- 0:54Surely I have calmed and quieted my soul. like
- 0:59a weaned child with his mother, like a weaned
- 1:03child is my soul within me. Father, I just ask
- 1:10that in these few moments that we have to share
- 1:15and look into your word today, that you would
- 1:18shape us and that you would mold us and make
- 1:21us more like you. We thank you, Father. And everybody
- 1:27said, Amen. Praise God. Cammie and I, we care
- 1:35greatly about what is happening in your life.
- 1:41And so we work hard to make sure that you have
- 1:47the tools that you need to not only survive this
- 1:53crazy world that we live in. How many of you
- 1:56know that we live in a crazy world? Come on.
- 1:59Put your hand up if you think we live in a crazy
- 2:01world. We do. But God's plan in this world is
- 2:08not for you just to survive, but for you to thrive
- 2:13in your relationship with the Lord. abundance
- 2:18is God's plan for you. And by that, I'm not preaching
- 2:23a give -to -get kind of gospel, name -it -claim
- 2:28-it kind of gospel, but God's plan for you is
- 2:32abundance. I want to read what the apostle John
- 2:35said in 3 John 1 and verse 2. He said, Beloved,
- 2:40I pray that you may prosper in all things. and
- 2:47be in health just as your soul prospers. Amen?
- 2:53That's a lot of prospering. God wants you to
- 2:59thrive. He wants you to prosper in his relationship
- 3:05with you, in your relationship with him. Hallelujah.
- 3:10I had never in my life known what it was to be
- 3:16afraid. And 18 years ago, when I was 35, I went
- 3:23through a year -long battle that forever changed
- 3:27my life. It was a battle of health at first,
- 3:33and then it was a battle with fear, and then
- 3:39it was a battle with demons. that fear opened
- 3:44the door to in my life. It changed my marriage.
- 3:51Cammie used to sleep incredibly deep. And now
- 3:56if she hears something, she wakes up. And it's
- 4:01because of that nine months of time and what
- 4:05I battled through during that season. But the
- 4:10worst part of it all is that there was chaos
- 4:14that was in my soul. And I could not fulfill
- 4:20this verse. I could not calm and quiet my spirit.
- 4:26This is not something that God does for you.
- 4:33The psalmist here, David, wrote Psalm 131. He
- 4:37said, have calmed and quieted my soul. I have
- 4:47done it. So God helps you and heals you, and
- 4:54He might do some things in your life. Praise
- 4:56God. He's the source of it all. Amen? He's the
- 5:00source of it all. But it is a skill that David
- 5:04learned really well in his relationship with
- 5:08the Lord. David was gifted at calming and quieting
- 5:12his soul. In fact, as a shepherd boy, a teenager,
- 5:17he learned this. In fact, many people believe
- 5:20that Psalm 23 was one of the first psalms that
- 5:23David wrote before he ever was even anointed
- 5:26to be king. As he's out there in the back of
- 5:29the wilderness taking care of sheep, he wrote
- 5:34it. He said, the Lord is my shepherd, I shall
- 5:37not want. He leads me beside... I should know
- 5:43this. It rolled off my tongue when I was practicing.
- 5:47He makes me to lie down in green pastures. That
- 5:51was the part I forgot. He leads me beside still
- 5:55waters. He restores my soul. David learned this
- 6:04as a teenager. That I can still and quiet my
- 6:09soul beside the waters that God leads me to.
- 6:14Just as I'm a shepherd over these sheep, God
- 6:17is a shepherd over my soul if I partake of what
- 6:22He has given me. Amen? I have stilled and calmed
- 6:28my soul. And so when I was walking through, Let
- 6:35me continue with David for a moment. Because
- 6:37later on in his life, it was no different. He's
- 6:40a warrior, and he's leading an army. And he's
- 6:46not... the king yet. In fact, he's running from
- 6:49Saul. And in this case, he's leading an army
- 6:52and he's pursuing the Amalekites. And the men
- 6:56had lost everything and they blamed David for
- 7:00it. And it says in 1 Samuel 30 verse 6, now David
- 7:05was greatly distressed for the people spoke of
- 7:09stoning him because the soul of all the people
- 7:13was grieved, every man for his son. and his daughters.
- 7:18And not only did they want to stone David and
- 7:21blame him, but David had lost his own family.
- 7:25And yet the next sentence says this, but David
- 7:29strengthened himself in the Lord his God. Isn't
- 7:36that awesome? He had learned the secret of stilling
- 7:41and quieting his soul. And Cammie knew that I
- 7:44was walking through this, that that's what I
- 7:46needed. In fact, she wrote out Isaiah 26 .3 on
- 7:50a note card, and she put it on my bedside table
- 7:53where I read it every single day, multiple times.
- 7:57And so Isaiah 26 .3 says, you will keep him in
- 8:01perfect peace whose mind is stayed on you because
- 8:07he trusts in you. Now that's elusive, isn't it?
- 8:13In this generation, perfect peace. That's elusive.
- 8:21In our generation and in our time, a stilled
- 8:25and calmed soul in perfect peace is rare. But
- 8:38it's a gift that God wants to give you. and teach
- 8:41you that you can learn. Praise God. And through
- 8:48this verse, we have the first part of the remedy.
- 8:52I'm going to come back to the remedies in a moment,
- 8:54but remedy number one is keep your mind fixed
- 9:00on Him. Amen? Praise God. And slowly I gained
- 9:10victory over those months. And slowly I was able
- 9:14to calm and quiet my soul once again. And that
- 9:19was the victory. Slow down. Meditate on who God
- 9:28is. Hebrews 12 .2 says, Look unto Jesus, the
- 9:34author and finisher of our faith. There's a lot
- 9:41of noise in the world. There's a lot of noise
- 9:48in the church. People are afraid of quietness
- 9:55and calmness. People don't like it at night,
- 10:00so they put on headphones and listen to music
- 10:03while they're sleeping. Because stillness and
- 10:08calmness and quietness bothers them. You start
- 10:14to listen to your own thoughts. And it is something
- 10:21that people try to drown out. Driving down the
- 10:27road and the car has to be filled with sound.
- 10:32When I'm by myself. 80 % of the time in my car,
- 10:36I have no sound playing at all. I like the silence.
- 10:43I've trained myself that way. Silence, calmness,
- 10:49and quietness. Quieting your inner man is a key
- 10:54to hearing God's voice. Right? Quieting your
- 11:00thoughts. This takes self -control. Because if
- 11:05you just let your mind idle, it's going to run
- 11:07everywhere. You've got to rein that mind in so
- 11:13that you can hear the quietness. 1 Kings 19,
- 11:23what was it? That was the situation where Elijah
- 11:31could hear the voice of God? Was it in the storm?
- 11:36Was it in the wind? It was a gentle whisper.
- 11:42And he heard the voice of God. The sons of Korah
- 11:48wrote about the opposite of a quiet spirit in
- 11:53Psalm 42. And so I want you to know if you're
- 11:56spirit man, if you're inner person, is not always
- 12:01calm and quiet, guess what that makes you? Human.
- 12:07And so this is a skill to learn and master. It
- 12:14is not something that most people have conquered.
- 12:17And the sons of Korah hadn't conquered it either.
- 12:20And in Psalm 42, in fact, in 42 and 43, they
- 12:24say the same thing three times. It's like the
- 12:27refrain of a dreaded chorus. Why are you cast
- 12:32down, O my soul? And why are you disquieted within
- 12:38me? Hope in God, for I shall yet praise Him,
- 12:43for He is the help of my countenance. Why are
- 12:49you disquieted? You know that the first word
- 12:54is downcast. Why are you downcast, O my soul?
- 12:57Do you know that word downcast means to disintegrate
- 13:01to dust? To disintegrate away to dust. Why are
- 13:07you downcast, O my soul? And then he says, why
- 13:11are you disquieted within me? The word disquieted,
- 13:17hama, to make loud sounds. Great commotion and
- 13:24tumult. That's disquieted, disturbed. And he's
- 13:31using that about his inner man. Not what he's
- 13:35hearing with his natural ears, but what he's
- 13:38feeling in the silence. My soul just is not quite
- 13:42right. Everything is discombobulated on the inside.
- 13:46I am not experiencing the peace, the shalom of
- 13:52God on the inside. Anybody ever been there before?
- 13:57Maybe you're there right now. You're experiencing
- 14:00that disquieted feeling. on the inside. You can't
- 14:07quiet your inner man. And they wrote these two
- 14:11psalms, the sons of Korah, and they give us another
- 14:15piece of the remedy. The first one is, keep your
- 14:19mind stayed on Him. The second part is, put your
- 14:24hope in God, for I will yet praise Him. And praise
- 14:32becomes part of the remedy of quieting your inner
- 14:37man. Praise the Lord, O my soul. You know, I
- 14:42feel like sometimes the saying of Ruth Ward Heflin
- 14:49is true. That the height of your praise determines
- 14:54the depth of your worship. And the height of
- 14:59your praise goes high. Hallelujah. It does something
- 15:03on your inside. Praise God. It calms and quiets
- 15:09you. It's my prayer that everybody will leave
- 15:11this place calmer and quieter than when they
- 15:15came in. Amen? I believe that that can happen.
- 15:20Calmer and quieter because of praise. Put your
- 15:23hope in God, for I will yet praise Him. Hallelujah.
- 15:29There are no circumstances. You need to get this.
- 15:34There are no outward circumstances that can steal
- 15:39the quietness of your soul. The outward circumstances
- 15:46can rage. It does not have to determine the condition
- 15:53of your soul. That's something that's learned
- 15:59by the power of the Holy Spirit. Let me read
- 16:02you a verse. Now it happened on a certain day.
- 16:08You just listen to the story and then I'll give
- 16:10you the reference. Now it happened on a certain
- 16:13day that he got into a boat with his disciples
- 16:16and he said to them, let's cross over to the
- 16:20other side of the lake. And they launched out.
- 16:23But as they sailed, he fell asleep. And a windstorm
- 16:29came down on the lake, and they were filling
- 16:32with water and were in jeopardy. And they came
- 16:39to him and awoke him. Now, I've been, probably
- 16:45their boat was a little bit bigger than the boats
- 16:47that I have, but I've been in some rough waters.
- 16:51And actually, as long as it's warm weather and
- 16:54the water is not in danger of causing hypothermia,
- 16:58I actually really like the rough, rough water.
- 17:01As long as it's not too rough, it's a lot of
- 17:05fun to paddle in. But I guarantee you this, I
- 17:10have never slept in tumultuous water. Our Savior
- 17:17said, hey, hey. gentlemen, let's go to the other
- 17:22side of the lake. And he fell asleep in the boat,
- 17:25and the boat starts rocking. The boat is filling
- 17:29up with water. It is starting to fill up with
- 17:33water. One time our canoe filled up with water,
- 17:37and I did not tip it. It just, water came over
- 17:43the edge, and it and it filled the whole canoe,
- 17:47and the canoe was a couple of inches underwater.
- 17:52We were still sitting in it, and we were still
- 17:56paddling. But I tell you something we weren't
- 18:00doing. We weren't asleep in the boat. And Jesus
- 18:07is sleeping through the windstorm. They were
- 18:12beginning. to fill up with water and were in
- 18:16trouble. And they came to him and woke him and
- 18:20said, Master, Master, we are perishing. Now,
- 18:25there is a difference between what is happening
- 18:30on the inside of these disciples and what is
- 18:35happening on the inside of Jesus. These disciples,
- 18:41their hearts are not calm and quiet. Their hearts
- 18:46are filled with fear. Their hearts are filled
- 18:50with anxiety. They are fixing their eyes not
- 18:55on what Jesus said to them, hey, let's go to
- 18:58the other side, but on the wind and the waves
- 19:01and all the circumstances. And Jesus arose, and
- 19:07I think he wiped... sleepy dirt out of his eyes.
- 19:11And he rebuked the wind, the raging of the water.
- 19:18And I think he did it calmly. I don't think he
- 19:21had to raise his voice. And they ceased and there
- 19:26was a calm. And Jesus said to them, where is
- 19:31your faith? And here's the third key this morning
- 19:36is to Allow your faith to get bigger. Then they
- 19:43were afraid and marveled, saying to one another,
- 19:46Who can this be? For he commands even the winds
- 19:50and the water, and they obey him. The squall
- 19:59was upon them, but Jesus was sleeping in the
- 20:06boat. Because of his faith and his trust in God.
- 20:14Speaking to somebody here today, God is going
- 20:18to bring you to the other side. Trust him. Allow
- 20:30the calm that is in his heart. To get inside
- 20:36your heart. God is not nervous about your situation.
- 20:44God is not wondering if you're going to make
- 20:46it or not. He is calm and quieted and assured.
- 20:52Hallelujah. And you allow that to get in your
- 20:56heart. Isn't that a good word? Allow that that
- 21:00is in his heart to get inside. your heart. We
- 21:07need to retrain our minds. Some of us need to
- 21:11turn off the television because unfortunately,
- 21:16media, all of it, is biased. Politically, if
- 21:22you're watching a political channel, it is either
- 21:25trying to sway you to become a Democrat or sway
- 21:28you to become a Republican. There is not media
- 21:32that is not one way or the other. And you know
- 21:36the number one ingredient that they use to get
- 21:39you swayed? Fear and anxiety. And you give yourself
- 21:46to that, and you're going to start to get angry
- 21:48with them, one side or the other. But what's
- 21:53happening to your soul? Your soul is no longer
- 21:59calm and quiet. It is disquieted. And I believe
- 22:07that God, some of you need to turn it off so
- 22:11that you can quiet your heart again to the Lord.
- 22:17Quiet your heart. Isaiah chapter 30, verse 15.
- 22:26I've only got two more scriptures and I'm done.
- 22:29This might be the shortest message I've ever
- 22:32preached. Some of you are clapping. Bill is clapping
- 22:37his hands back there. He is clapping his hands.
- 22:44Oh, he's ready for lunch. In Isaiah chapter 30,
- 22:55God gives them some direction to get out of the
- 23:00judgment that they're in, and he says in verse
- 23:0215, for thus says the Lord God, the Holy One
- 23:06of Israel, in returning, some translations say
- 23:11repentance, in repentance and rest is your salvation,
- 23:18or you shall be saved. In quietness, and confidence
- 23:25shall be your strength. But you would have none
- 23:34of it. It got quiet in here, didn't it? He gave
- 23:48them the remedy. Return. Rest in me. Embrace
- 23:56quietness and rest. But they rejected it. By
- 24:06the way that we live, we can reject the quietness
- 24:11of our soul, the calmness and stillness of our
- 24:15heart. We love our grandsons. But they shake
- 24:24up our house. We've had them for over three weeks.
- 24:32This is the longest. That's why we look so good
- 24:35this morning. We have been dealing with them
- 24:40and loving them and enjoying them. Mostly, 90
- 24:43% enjoying them. But they bring a sense of disquiet.
- 24:52to our home. And some of you can appreciate when
- 24:58your grandkids come, and some of you can appreciate
- 25:01when you send them back to mom and dad. Oh, raise
- 25:05your hand if you know what I'm talking about.
- 25:06Come on. You got to be honest. Yeah, grandparents
- 25:11with their grandchildren in the room right now
- 25:13have to be careful. Quietness and confidence
- 25:23is your strength. I want to read one more passage.
- 25:33Psalm 46. I'm going to read the whole psalm.
- 25:40And you're going to hear, this is again the sons
- 25:43of Korah. God is our refuge. And strength. A
- 25:55very present help in trouble. Therefore we will
- 26:01not fear. Even though the earth be removed. And
- 26:06though the mountains be carried in the midst
- 26:08of the sea. Though its waters roar. Guess what
- 26:15that word roar is? Disquieted. It's the same
- 26:21word. Tumultuous. Why so disturbed within me?
- 26:28Though the waters roar and be troubled. Though
- 26:36the mountains shake with its swelling. Selah.
- 26:41In the midst of that, the next verse happens.
- 26:47There is a river. Whose streams shall make glad
- 26:53the city of God. The holy place of the tabernacle
- 26:58of the Most High. God is in the midst of her.
- 27:02She shall not be moved. God shall help her just
- 27:08at the break of dawn. Here's that word again.
- 27:12The nations raged. It's the same word. The nations
- 27:20were entumbled. The nations were disquieted.
- 27:23The nations were all stirred up. Does that sound
- 27:27like our world today? That's where we live, friends.
- 27:31The nations raged. The kingdoms were moved. But
- 27:37God lifted his voice and the earth melted. The
- 27:42Lord of hosts is with us. The God of Jacob. Is.
- 27:50Our refuge. Selah. Come. Behold the works of
- 27:59the Lord. Who has made desolations in the earth.
- 28:03He makes wars cease to the end of the earth.
- 28:06He breaks the bow and cuts the spear in two.
- 28:10He burns the chariot in the fire. Be still. And
- 28:19know that I am God. I will be exalted among the
- 28:25nations. I will be exalted in the earth. The
- 28:31Lord of hosts is with us. The God of Jacob is
- 28:35our refuge. Selah. And that word still. Be still.
- 28:47is the word rapah. And it means to hang limp.
- 28:56What it really means is to give up. To give up.
- 29:07To give up in your own strength, in your own
- 29:10flesh, in your own trust. It means to fully yield.
- 29:19Be still. Be still. Tell on Edmund and Benji.
- 29:31We told them to be still. And they would not.
- 29:40So I put one in one chair. And one on the couch.
- 29:46And I said, you're there for two minutes until
- 29:48you are still. One of them got up. I won't tell
- 29:53you which one. And they got another two minutes.
- 30:00Give up. Yield. You know, we're not that much
- 30:05different. It's time to yield to the Lord. It's
- 30:15time to give up to God's plans for your life.
- 30:20It's the question that Jesus asked Saul on the
- 30:23road to Damascus. It's hard for you to kick against
- 30:27the pricks. Give up, Saul. Yield. Some perhaps
- 30:38have been running from God. And it's time to
- 30:43simply give up and yield and know that He's God.
- 30:53The Lord may or may not change your situation,
- 30:56but He will change you. He may or may not deliver
- 31:03you out of the lion's den. He may or may not...
- 31:08cause you to not be burned when you're thrown
- 31:11into the fire, but he will change you and transform
- 31:18your life. Peace is a fruit of the Spirit. Self
- 31:26-control is a fruit of the Spirit. It is your
- 31:31portion as a believer in Christ. I have stilled
- 31:39and calmed, quieted my soul. Father, we come
- 31:46before you in Jesus' name. And we thank you for
- 31:53your word that penetrates and cuts. And even
- 32:02this morning, there's a restlessness. That just
- 32:09can seem to never go away in our inner person.
- 32:15God, I'm just asking for grace this morning.
- 32:19You do the initial work, but we maintain it.
- 32:23And we have to learn to calm and quiet our mind.
- 32:33There's some this morning that are carrying.
- 32:37The chaos of Psalm 42 and 43. Why so disturbed
- 32:41within me? Put your hope in God. It's what you've
- 32:48taught us to do, Lord. To fix our eyes on you.
- 32:53To fix our mind on you. To give you praise. To
- 33:00grow in our faith. And to give up before you.
- 33:08Lord, if there's somebody here that's never yielded
- 33:11their life to Christ, I just want to give them
- 33:13that opportunity. I just want to pray for you
- 33:21right now. If you're here and you're not right
- 33:25with God, really, and you know that, but you
- 33:29want God to do a work inside of you this morning
- 33:32and you want to say, God, here I am. I yield
- 33:36my life to you. You might not even know what
- 33:40all that means. That Jesus paid the price for
- 33:45your sin on the cross. And you just yield to
- 33:48that. And you just turn to the Lord. And you
- 33:56just say, God, I turn to you. I turn away from
- 33:59my sin. And I turn to you right now. If you're
- 34:05here and... And that's your heart and you want
- 34:09to pray that prayer. God, I'm coming back to
- 34:11you. I just want you to just lift your hand.
- 34:15Everybody's eyes are closed and their heads are
- 34:18bowed. If you want to pray that prayer, just
- 34:21lift your hand to the Lord. Thank you. Anybody
- 34:23else that would just say, yes, I need to yield
- 34:26my life to Christ. Thank you. Anybody else? Anybody
- 34:31else? For the sake of these two that have raised
- 34:36their hands, I'd just like us all to pray together.
- 34:39Just repeat this prayer after me and just pray
- 34:42it from your heart right now. Lord Jesus, I thank
- 34:48you for the cross. I thank you for shedding your
- 34:52blood for me. I receive the gift of forgiveness
- 34:57as I turn from you. Turn to you. Turn from my
- 35:06sin. Turn to you. Thank you that you walk with
- 35:12me. Thank you that you help me. Every step of
- 35:18the way. Lord, I'm now a follower of Jesus Christ.
- 35:27Thank you, Lord. Thank you, Lord. Thank you,
- 35:31Lord. We give you praise, God. We give you praise.
- 35:36And now, Lord, there are people here, they need
- 35:39the peace of God to come and be their guard,
- 35:41but they need you, Lord, to just do an initial
- 35:45work in their heart. And as they praise, and
- 35:50as they focus on you, and as they grow in their
- 35:55faith, and as they yield, They're asking you
- 36:01this morning for help. And so, God, we just want
- 36:07to cover anybody that's in the midst of a moment
- 36:11like that in their life. And you can, I'm going
- 36:17to pray for you whether you raise your hand or
- 36:19not, but if you do raise your hand, I'm going
- 36:21to pray for you specifically. Everybody in this
- 36:24room has been where you are. If you'd like specific
- 36:28prayer, just for the Lord to help you in quieting
- 36:34your soul before him. I just want you to lift
- 36:39up your hand to the Lord. I'm going to pray for
- 36:41you. Thank you, Lord. People all over just lifting
- 36:45up their hands. Father, those that have their
- 36:48hands raised right now, you see right where they
- 36:51are. You see what they're walking through in
- 36:54life. Their situations and their circumstances
- 36:57might be tumultuous. But I ask in Jesus' name
- 37:02that you would come alongside them right now.
- 37:06And God, I just speak to the storm, not just
- 37:09on the outward, but on the inside. And I speak
- 37:13to it to be still in Jesus' name. And I thank
- 37:22you, God. I pray, God, that this, even today
- 37:26before they go to bed, that you, Lord, would
- 37:32come as a shepherd and they would yield to the
- 37:35shepherd that would say, come beside the quiet
- 37:39waters I have for you just for a moment to turn
- 37:44everything off, to put away the phone, and to
- 37:50just... Breathe you in. And to just say, Jesus,
- 37:56I thank you for the stillness and the quietness
- 38:02of my heart. Help me to grow in stilling and
- 38:09quieting my soul. In Jesus' mighty name. In Jesus'
- 38:18mighty name. Hallelujah. Praise the Lord. I feel
- 38:26the peace of God in this house. Amen? I feel
- 38:31the peace of God in this house. And I just speak
- 38:34that Hebrew word for shalom. The Hebrew word
- 38:39shalom is peace. And it is all around you. And
- 38:45it covers every area of your life. And it guards
- 38:50your heart. and your mind. Isn't that good? Peace
- 38:57of God. Hallelujah. I have stilled and quieted
- 39:03my soul. It's a precious commodity. And I want
- 39:09to encourage you to treasure and value stillness
- 39:13and quietness in your life. Amen? Praise God.
