- 0:04Speaker 1: Keep Fairbanks is here, Miami Marlin's high leverage reliever closer
- 0:09Speaker 1: joining us right now. Signed a big deal with Miami.
- 0:12Speaker 2: Pete.
- 0:12Speaker 1: Congratulations on the deal and tell us how it all
- 0:15Speaker 1: went down, man, and how excited you are to stay
- 0:17Speaker 1: in the Sunshine State.
- 0:19Speaker 3: Appreciate it.
- 0:19Speaker 4: Yeah, I told, uh, you know, I was talking to
- 0:21Speaker 4: the radio guys the other day and I, you know,
- 0:23Speaker 4: I met it letting me know that I could never
- 0:25Speaker 4: play for a team that doesn't have a fish mascot
- 0:27Speaker 4: in some capacity.
- 0:29Speaker 3: So I figured that that was like my number one.
- 0:31Speaker 4: I got to make it happen. I got two choices,
- 0:34Speaker 4: and one of them didn't want me anymore. So uh no, look,
- 0:37Speaker 4: we uh you know, had a lot of conversations with
- 0:39Speaker 4: Bendetz throughout it, and you know, the biggest plus, you know,
- 0:43Speaker 4: I think that they're going to be good and really
- 0:45Speaker 4: for us being able to be close. My wife's were
- 0:47Speaker 4: expecting our third kid, so you know, taking some of
- 0:50Speaker 4: the burden off of you know, everything there by being
- 0:53Speaker 4: a drive away versus a long flight.
- 0:55Speaker 3: You know, the more we talked about it was a
- 0:56Speaker 3: was a pretty big positive.
- 0:57Speaker 4: And then you know, being familiar with Mendex and then
- 1:01Speaker 4: you know, getting a first hand look at some of
- 1:03Speaker 4: the good young talent they have.
- 1:04Speaker 3: I think it was hopefully it will be a good
- 1:06Speaker 3: fit for us.
- 1:08Speaker 5: Two things before my question, congratulations, and I didn't know
- 1:11Speaker 5: that a stingray was a fish.
- 1:14Speaker 3: I didn't know tarlagenius fish. Eric, it's a cartilagenius fish.
- 1:17Speaker 3: I had no idea.
- 1:19Speaker 5: I had no idea, but thank you for that. I
- 1:21Speaker 5: know it wasn't a mammal, but I'm like, what is it?
- 1:22Speaker 3: Is it a crustation?
- 1:25Speaker 5: Anyway, Take us through the pitch. Take us through the
- 1:29Speaker 5: pitch to go to the Marlins. Everyone's gonna say, oh,
- 1:31Speaker 5: who cares? You know, we got the money that it.
- 1:33Speaker 5: As a baseball player, you don't ever look at your
- 1:36Speaker 5: paycheck when you're out on the mound. What's the pitch
- 1:39Speaker 5: that made you say, yes, I'm going to be a Marlin.
- 1:43Speaker 4: I really liked Mastris and their director of pitching. I
- 1:46Speaker 4: like both of them, you know, and Aaron and I
- 1:49Speaker 4: Aarn my agent. We went in with no kind of
- 1:51Speaker 4: expectations for you know, pitching departments, you know what teams
- 1:56Speaker 4: had to offer, et cetera. Kind of went in, you know,
- 1:58Speaker 4: blight Slate impressed us between those two and the conversations
- 2:02Speaker 4: we had with them, I really liked McCullough and everybody.
- 2:05Speaker 4: And then, you know, I'm decent enough friends with Calvin Fouchet,
- 2:09Speaker 4: who was one of the relievers. I was able to
- 2:10Speaker 4: talk to him a little bit about it, and yeah,
- 2:13Speaker 4: I mean it just they really brought more to the table.
- 2:18Speaker 3: Than than I had anything, you know, in going in
- 2:21Speaker 3: with nothing.
- 2:22Speaker 4: They definitely kind of set a pretty good, you know
- 2:24Speaker 4: standard for me, and I think that they are moving
- 2:27Speaker 4: in the right direction, right. You kind of saw the
- 2:30Speaker 4: the start of it last year, and hopefully I can, uh,
- 2:33Speaker 4: you know, help you know, lock down the back end
- 2:35Speaker 4: of things and make a little make a little more
- 2:37Speaker 4: noise and get on the right side of five hundred
- 2:39Speaker 4: and and make a little bit of a push.
- 2:42Speaker 2: Now, when you became that free agent, I know you
- 2:45Speaker 2: picked the Marlins, but was there any other teams that
- 2:47Speaker 2: were on your tail that you were looking like, Oh man,
- 2:50Speaker 2: it's I could go one way or another here.
- 2:53Speaker 4: Yeah, there was more than a handful that we had,
- 2:56Speaker 4: you know, pretty good, pretty decent conversations with and then
- 3:00Speaker 4: you know, kind of by the end we the more
- 3:01Speaker 4: that my wife and I talked about it the more
- 3:03Speaker 4: and more likely. You know, it seemed like that Miami
- 3:05Speaker 4: was going to be going to be the right fit
- 3:06Speaker 4: for us, and we were able to, I think, both
- 3:09Speaker 4: get what we wanted out of it.
- 3:12Speaker 5: Does being a closer matter to you? Does being the
- 3:15Speaker 5: guy that is the high leverage inning guy? Does that
- 3:19Speaker 5: matter when you're going through free agency for your first time?
- 3:24Speaker 4: I mean, I think it matters in some regard, right,
- 3:27Speaker 4: Like I think that you know, when you do it
- 3:31Speaker 4: for you know, however many years, you definitely you know it,
- 3:34Speaker 4: definitely you hold a little hold on to a little
- 3:36Speaker 4: bit of that. But I think, you know, sometimes the
- 3:39Speaker 4: most important outs are in the ninth inning, right, they
- 3:42Speaker 4: could be earlier, right, those the your eight, your twenty four,
- 3:45Speaker 4: twenty five, twenty six, twenty seven, those are still, in
- 3:49Speaker 4: my estimation, the hardest out outs to get, but they
- 3:51Speaker 4: might not be the most important ones.
- 3:53Speaker 3: So you know, wherever wherever.
- 3:56Speaker 4: It is to to get those outs, you know, I'm
- 3:58Speaker 4: excited to be up to that challenge again after you know,
- 4:02Speaker 4: doing a little bit of it for quite a few
- 4:04Speaker 4: years with Tampa.
- 4:05Speaker 5: Yeah, you did a little bit of it, that's for sure,
- 4:07Speaker 5: in some big spots and you were pretty pretty successful.
- 4:10Speaker 5: Here's my question. I'm going to put you in a scenario. Okay,
- 4:13Speaker 5: Game one, you guys are winning four to three, and
- 4:16Speaker 5: you get out on the mound, you do your you know,
- 4:18Speaker 5: your stare where you're not blinking at all, and you
- 4:20Speaker 5: look into the dugout or you're listening. I mean you
- 4:24Speaker 5: look into the catcher's mitt. You know, he's looking for
- 4:27Speaker 5: his sign and you're listening, and your catcher's going like this,
- 4:30Speaker 5: looking over and then he hits the button and you're like, what,
- 4:33Speaker 5: wait a minute, nobody's on and he looks over again
- 4:36Speaker 5: for the next pitch. Oh wait a minute. Are you
- 4:39Speaker 5: okay with the guys from the bench calling the pitches
- 4:41Speaker 5: for you? And did that come up when you had
- 4:44Speaker 5: this conversation with the pitching guy, which with Clayton McCalla
- 4:48Speaker 5: of the manager.
- 4:51Speaker 4: Yeah, I mean we definitely talked about it right as
- 4:53Speaker 4: one of the one of the things that was addressed.
- 4:55Speaker 4: And for me, you know, catcher versus dougout, they're almost
- 4:59Speaker 4: kind of the same in my eyes. It's not me
- 5:02Speaker 4: that's making the initial decisions. So where it comes from
- 5:06Speaker 4: isn't as big a thing, right because I know they
- 5:10Speaker 4: get theirs as long as I get it and plenty
- 5:12Speaker 4: of in enough time to be able to shape to
- 5:15Speaker 4: something that I say I disagree with, Say it's fastball,
- 5:17Speaker 4: I want slider, whatever, as long as I have enough
- 5:19Speaker 4: time to get to that still be able to do
- 5:22Speaker 4: my little, my little rock back and forth antics come
- 5:25Speaker 4: set and throw.
- 5:26Speaker 1: Then you know that's that's no issue to me. H, pete,
- 5:33Speaker 1: I'm going to do this in like really basic just
- 5:36Speaker 1: fan looking at how players make a lot of money terms.
- 5:39Speaker 1: It was a unique situation. Raise didn't pick up your
- 5:43Speaker 1: option like you mentioned earlier. Hey, Raise didn't want me.
- 5:45Speaker 1: You hit the free agent market. You did make more money.
- 5:49Speaker 1: So do you look at that part of it? At
- 5:51Speaker 1: least I know you get to join a team that
- 5:53Speaker 1: does want you and say, okay, if I got traded,
- 5:56Speaker 1: let's say to the same team, I would have made
- 5:58Speaker 1: less money. I know it's sounds like kind of simple,
- 6:01Speaker 1: and I know some guys don't love talking about the
- 6:03Speaker 1: financial components, but you did actually benefit from the race
- 6:07Speaker 1: saying you know what, meh, we don't want you back
- 6:09Speaker 1: and we're not gonna kind of take you on and
- 6:11Speaker 1: work on the trade winds for the next month or so.
- 6:16Speaker 3: Yeah, I'd say it worked out.
- 6:20Speaker 4: You know, I think Aaron and I had an idea
- 6:22Speaker 4: that it could be headed towards the you know option
- 6:25Speaker 4: decline and and you know, be able to kind of
- 6:29Speaker 4: go out there and figure out.
- 6:30Speaker 3: A spot that would be best.
- 6:34Speaker 4: You know, had it been a trade or whatever, I
- 6:36Speaker 4: would have been perfectly fine with however it played out.
- 6:39Speaker 4: But you know, I'm excited to be staying in the
- 6:41Speaker 4: state of the state of Florida and getting to traverse
- 6:44Speaker 4: across Alligator Alley so I can go back and see
- 6:46Speaker 4: my family and hopefully get some wins for the fish
- 6:49Speaker 4: down there.
- 6:51Speaker 5: You know, there is a there's a stopping point part
- 6:53Speaker 5: way through Alligator Alley now, so in case you get sleepy,
- 6:56Speaker 5: or you're afraid, or you want to see alligators, there's
- 6:59Speaker 5: like a lookout tower that you can stop at.
- 7:00Speaker 4: It you need perfect perfect That would be my number
- 7:04Speaker 4: one spot to want to view an alligator was halfway
- 7:07Speaker 4: through my drive back home.
- 7:11Speaker 5: If people haven't done the Alligator Alley drive, my suggestion
- 7:14Speaker 5: is don't but to see to see a newborn, to
- 7:17Speaker 5: see your family, that's a that's a big change. You
- 7:20Speaker 5: had said in your Remind me if if I'm wrong.
- 7:22Speaker 5: Maybe I heard it wrong, but in your radio interview,
- 7:26Speaker 5: I think it was a radio interview, you said your
- 7:28Speaker 5: relationship or the way you talked to Peter Bendex, did
- 7:31Speaker 5: you have a relationship before from when he was.
- 7:33Speaker 4: Yeah, well I always called him, I always called him
- 7:36Speaker 4: my fellow Pete. Okay, yeah, you know you always see
- 7:41Speaker 4: those guys around right, you're you know, and then I'm
- 7:44Speaker 4: a talkative guy for the most part. So I try
- 7:47Speaker 4: and try and build whatever relationships you can, whether it's
- 7:50Speaker 4: you know, front office guys, your teammates, staff members, et cetera.
- 7:54Speaker 4: You know, they're all all people that matter in an
- 7:56Speaker 4: organization and you ought to, you know, do your best
- 7:59Speaker 4: to to form those relationships. So I definitely say the
- 8:02Speaker 4: familiarity definitely makes things easier right when you're you know,
- 8:06Speaker 4: looking for for a landing spot, Knowing what you're going
- 8:10Speaker 4: to get from the people in charge, definitely, you know,
- 8:13Speaker 4: can make a transition that much easier in my eyes.
- 8:17Speaker 2: How does it feel you know your free agent? This
- 8:19Speaker 2: year you finally you know, got your deal or whatever.
- 8:21Speaker 2: How does it feel now next year you're going to
- 8:23Speaker 2: be free agent too? Does that change your mindset on anything?
- 8:26Speaker 2: Or is it the same kind of focus you have,
- 8:28Speaker 2: same outcome, same kind of goals that you have going
- 8:30Speaker 2: on into this year.
- 8:32Speaker 4: Yeah, I mean it's all it's all the same, right,
- 8:34Speaker 4: We're still trying to not give up any runs and
- 8:36Speaker 4: win baseball games, and now you know we're doing it
- 8:39Speaker 4: with with a different color steam on. But you know
- 8:43Speaker 4: we're gonna approach it just like we did last year
- 8:45Speaker 4: and go out and lock some games down and then
- 8:47Speaker 4: hopefully repeat the whole process again next December.
- 8:53Speaker 1: So you spent seven seasons, including that your first season,
- 8:58Speaker 1: I know, a little Texas and then Tampa Bay seven
- 9:00Speaker 1: seasons with the Race. Brandon Lau spent eight seasons with
- 9:05Speaker 1: the Race. Both are now gone over the last few weeks.
- 9:08Speaker 1: That's a really really long tenured Ray. What is the
- 9:12Speaker 1: key to longevity with the Rays? Like for a player
- 9:14Speaker 1: on the Rays right now who's like, you know what,
- 9:16Speaker 1: I just got a sick house on the beach.
- 9:18Speaker 3: I love it.
- 9:20Speaker 1: How do I stay here for a team that basically
- 9:23Speaker 1: turns their whole roster over every three years aside from
- 9:26Speaker 1: one or two guys.
- 9:28Speaker 4: Yeah, that's that's I'm not sure how I figured out
- 9:32Speaker 4: of all the people that I expected to stay there
- 9:34Speaker 4: for a long time. I didn't expect myself to be
- 9:35Speaker 4: on that list just given uh, you know, the bullpen arms.
- 9:39Speaker 3: We typically are the ones that are the most have
- 9:41Speaker 3: the most turnovers there.
- 9:44Speaker 4: So yeah, I don't know, find some success and hope
- 9:50Speaker 4: for the best is typically what we were doing.
- 9:53Speaker 1: I have the answer, you sign an extension if they
- 9:57Speaker 1: offer you one and get a no trade clause in there.
- 9:59Speaker 1: But they don't really do that, so otherwise I don't know.
- 10:03Speaker 1: But I mean, actually that does make sense, right because
- 10:06Speaker 1: Bilaud did do that.
- 10:07Speaker 3: I forgot.
- 10:07Speaker 1: He did actually sign an extension really early on in
- 10:10Speaker 1: his career and then kept getting the club options picked up.
- 10:13Speaker 1: So that would be the answer, right, Hey, yeah, those
- 10:15Speaker 1: early extension offers be.
- 10:17Speaker 3: Cost controlled, be cost Yes.
- 10:22Speaker 1: That is the way exactly I like it.
- 10:25Speaker 5: All right, go ahead, rats, So you're leaving the American
- 10:28Speaker 5: League East. I kind of have a two part question here,
- 10:31Speaker 5: but it kind of coincides which stadium are you're gonna
- 10:34Speaker 5: miss the most and which one are you going to
- 10:37Speaker 5: miss the least.
- 10:43Speaker 3: I would say everyone to miss Boston both the most
- 10:47Speaker 3: and the least. Oh, go ahead, explain because you get
- 10:53Speaker 3: outs that aren't outs there. But it's also like a
- 10:58Speaker 3: great ballpark in.
- 10:59Speaker 5: Atmosphe nothing to do with nothing to do with the fact,
- 11:05Speaker 5: Oh right, what were you just say? Oh, nothing to
- 11:07Speaker 5: do with the fact that when you put your arm
- 11:09Speaker 5: up that a fan can actually touch your arm when
- 11:11Speaker 5: you're warming up. It has nothing to do with that.
- 11:14Speaker 3: Yeah, knocking to miss the bullpen.
- 11:17Speaker 4: Or hitting my head in the dugout whenever I would
- 11:19Speaker 4: walk down the steps and i'd like go to like
- 11:21Speaker 4: the bench, and it's so short that without fail, I
- 11:25Speaker 4: was either fired up in a positive or negative way.
- 11:28Speaker 4: And I hit my head on that so many times.
- 11:31Speaker 4: But yeah, I mean it's a great atmosphere, fun place
- 11:33Speaker 4: to play. The bullpen suckers, So you know it's positives
- 11:38Speaker 4: and negatives.
- 11:39Speaker 5: That's fair. So I'm taking you to your new stadium.
- 11:42Speaker 5: What do you think about the home run statue that's
- 11:44Speaker 5: now outside? Should they move it back inside?
- 11:50Speaker 3: You know I'm always down for a home run gimmick.
- 11:55Speaker 4: However, I think the statue serves a great purpose on
- 12:00Speaker 4: display outside where I don't have to see it as much.
- 12:05Speaker 5: What if it was a strikeout statue and.
- 12:08Speaker 3: Let's bring it right back inside, right back inside.
- 12:10Speaker 4: If it goes up every time somebody punches a ticket,
- 12:13Speaker 4: let's get that back in there as soon as possible.
- 12:16Speaker 5: Anything for k Dogg's I like it.
- 12:17Speaker 3: I like it. That's right.
- 12:20Speaker 5: Hey.
- 12:20Speaker 1: Last one for me, Pete. Have you spoken to anybody
- 12:23Speaker 1: on this team? Did anyone reach out, whether it's from
- 12:26Speaker 1: a coaching or player perspective, and if so, can you
- 12:29Speaker 1: give us any unique insight that you learned so far?
- 12:32Speaker 1: We know it's a very young team and you have
- 12:35Speaker 1: the Peter Bendix connection, who was in the front office
- 12:38Speaker 1: with the Rays and now is trying to make his
- 12:40Speaker 1: raise version of the Marlins here.
- 12:43Speaker 3: Yeah, has some people reach out. I talked to Calvin
- 12:45Speaker 3: vasche He.
- 12:48Speaker 4: I actually talked to him earlier today about living situations,
- 12:51Speaker 4: and he was mad that I didn't give him any
- 12:54Speaker 4: credit in helping me make my decision on my last
- 12:58Speaker 4: media session. So I'd just like to reiterate to Calvin
- 13:02Speaker 4: that I still give him no credit with decisions that
- 13:04Speaker 4: I've made.
- 13:08Speaker 6: He thinks he was influencing what like wing, that he
- 13:12Speaker 6: that he had some sway on me in this in
- 13:14Speaker 6: this whole process, and I'd like to tell Calvin that
- 13:17Speaker 6: that's not the case.
- 13:18Speaker 3: But I'm very excited to see him.
- 13:20Speaker 5: I love that you people don't know who Calvin is,
- 13:23Speaker 5: but that you call him Calvin. That makes me laugh.
- 13:27Speaker 3: Yes, his name is Calvin, and a lot of people
- 13:32Speaker 3: don't call him Calvin.
- 13:35Speaker 1: Is his real name Calvin, and it's and we're going.
- 13:39Speaker 3: No, no, no, no. Calvin is a different person than
- 13:42Speaker 3: Colin Poche.
- 13:44Speaker 6: Oh oh okay, these are to These are two separate individuals.
- 13:50Speaker 1: Yes, yes, good job, crats Uh did you have one
- 13:55Speaker 1: more or no?
- 13:57Speaker 5: I'm good you're.
- 14:00Speaker 1: That we've made Calvin feel even worse. Gee, don't show
- 14:05Speaker 1: him this. Happy New Year, dude, Congrats on the deal,
- 14:08Speaker 1: Thank you.
- 14:09Speaker 3: For joining us.
- 14:09Speaker 1: Appreciate the time, dude, and we'll talk to you in
- 14:12Speaker 1: spring training.
- 14:13Speaker 3: Chris, guys, appreciate it. Happy New Year.
