- 0:02But there rose up certain of the sect of the Pharisees which
- 0:05believes saying that it was needful to circumcise them and
- 0:08to command them to keep the law of Moses.
- 0:11And the apostles and elders came together for to consider of this
- 0:15matter. Hey listeners, this is Nick from
- 0:18Scripture Central and today's podcast addresses the question,
- 0:21Why was the Jerusalem council important when Jesus
- 0:29commissioned his apostles to spread the gospel after his
- 0:31resurrection, he told them that ye shall be witnesses unto me
- 0:35both in Jerusalem and in all Judea and in Samaria and unto
- 0:40the utmost part of the earth. As Luke describes the growth of
- 0:44the church, the apostles and missionaries of the church would
- 0:46ultimately fulfill that very blessing.
- 0:49They would preach first in Jerusalem and Judea, then in
- 0:53Samaria. Finally, in a dramatic vision
- 0:56manifested to Peter, the Lord made it known that the gospel
- 0:59was now to go to the Gentiles. That raised the need for the
- 1:03leadership of the church to hold a formal council meeting in
- 1:06order to reach a unanimous decision on what should be
- 1:09required of a Gentile who joined the Church of Jesus Christ.
- 1:14The conversion of Cornelius, a Roman military leader, broke new
- 1:18ground. Prior to Cornelius's baptism at
- 1:21the hands of Peter, all Christians were either Jews who
- 1:24are already keeping the Law of Moses, or proselytes, Gentiles
- 1:28who had previously converted to Judaism and were also keeping
- 1:31the Law of Moses at the time they became Christians.
- 1:35Cornelius, however, was not observing any of the provisions
- 1:38of the Law of Moses, but was simply one that feared God and
- 1:42prayed to God always. In the New Testament, the term
- 1:46God fearer referred to Gentiles who were sympathetic towards
- 1:49Judaism and worshiped Jehovah. But we're not keeping the
- 1:53regulations of the Law of Moses, specifically that of
- 1:56circumcision. Before the precedent set by
- 1:59Cornelius, it was probably understood that if a Gentile man
- 2:03wanted to join the church, he first needed to be circumcised
- 2:06and keep the Law of Moses, while Jesus had come to fulfill that
- 2:10law. He also said that people should
- 2:12continue to keep even the least of the commandments.
- 2:15So how is this supposed to work? Life in Israel was deeply
- 2:19entrenched in tradition, which made it difficult for many of
- 2:22the early Christians to understand which Jewish
- 2:24practices carried over into Christian worship and
- 2:27observance, and which did not. Indeed, as John W Welch has
- 2:31observed, though many Christians were conscious that Jesus had
- 2:34fulfilled the law, they did not see that as abolishing all its
- 2:38practices. Whereas others, including the
- 2:41Apostle Paul, believe that many of the practical matters of the
- 2:44Law of Moses were now fulfilled and should no longer be
- 2:46observed. The conflict arising from these
- 2:50divergent worldviews led some early Christians to insist,
- 2:53except you be circumcised after the matter of Moses ye cannot be
- 2:57saved, and others reasonably shared their concerns and felt
- 3:00obedience to the Law of Moses was still needful.
- 3:03To officially address this concern, the apostles and elders
- 3:06came together for to consider of this matter.
- 3:09Meeting is a body of the 12 in an official meeting that would
- 3:12later be known as the Jerusalem Council.
- 3:16The dissensions that had been raised over this point, as
- 3:18Robert J Matthews observed, could be settled officially only
- 3:22by the 12 at Jerusalem. This matter, after all, was not
- 3:26simply a topic about tradition or custom, but a fundamental
- 3:30doctrinal issue regarding the atonement of Jesus Christ.
- 3:33Namely, how was each particular rule of the Law of Moses
- 3:36affected by the fulfillment of Jesus's mortal mission?
- 3:41As the apostles offered their various opinions on this
- 3:43foundational question, Peter first reminded them of his
- 3:47vision and subsequent spiritual manifestation with Cornelius Men
- 3:51and Brethren. Ye know how that a good while
- 3:53ago God made choice among us, that the Gentiles by my mouth
- 3:57should hear the word of the gospel and believe, And God,
- 4:01which knoweth the hearts, bear them witness, giving them the
- 4:04Holy Ghost even as he did unto us.
- 4:08Revelation, not logical reasoning, is to be our guide.
- 4:12Ultimately, Peter declared that salvation is not based on
- 4:15obedience to the Law of Moses, but is found only in Jesus
- 4:18Christ. Paul and Barnabas, who had
- 4:21recently returned from a mission, similarly testified to
- 4:24this point. Following the council, James,
- 4:27the brother of Jesus and now one of the pillars of the Church,
- 4:30announced the decision of the Apostles.
- 4:33Ultimately, the Church was instructed that we trouble not
- 4:36them, which from among the Gentiles are turned to God.
- 4:40Concerning circumcision, however, the Apostles made it
- 4:43clear that those converts, like the Jews, must continue to obey
- 4:47the most ancient core of the laws pertaining to eating
- 4:50unclean meat and essential purity, namely those laws
- 4:54stemming from the days of Noah that prohibited pollution by
- 4:56contact with idols, fornication, consumption of strangled meats,
- 5:01and impure contacts with blood. Because these laws dated back to
- 5:05the time of Noah, they had universal applicability, whereas
- 5:08the Law of Moses was issued only to the House of Israel.
- 5:12One aspect of this Apostolic Council's decision that is often
- 5:16overlooked, however, is its limited scope.
- 5:20As Frank F Judd Junior has noted, the Council made no
- 5:23declaration concerning whether or not Jewish Christians needed
- 5:27to continue keeping the Law of Moses.
- 5:29Only Gentile converts were addressed in this decision.
- 5:33In fact, he continues, there is evidence in the Book of Acts
- 5:37that Jewish Christians continue to keep aspects of the Law of
- 5:40Moses well after the Jerusalem Council.
- 5:44Given the importance of this issue, had given Peter's
- 5:47knowledge and statements that the Law of Moses was not
- 5:49required for salvation, one might wonder why the Church
- 5:52leaders did not offer a stronger statement on the matter or
- 5:55address it to the Jewish Christians as well.
- 5:59It is important to remember the young age of the Church and how
- 6:02tense this issue had become. By offering the decision in this
- 6:05matter, the leaders allowed those who felt it was needful to
- 6:08follow the Law of Moses to continue to do so.
- 6:11Matthews likewise notes that the Brethren probably avoided a
- 6:15schism in the Church, and no doubt also the ire that would
- 6:18have come from the Jews had the decision been stronger.
- 6:22There must have been many who would have preferred a stronger
- 6:25declaration, but the Brethren acted in the wisdom requisite
- 6:28for their situation. The Jerusalem Council served to
- 6:31establish several important Church policies and also to
- 6:34reinforce the doctor of the Atonement and mission of Jesus
- 6:37Christ at a critical time. This council, it should be
- 6:41remembered, was directed by the 12 Apostles and headed by Peter,
- 6:45the head of the Church. Only Peter and the apostles had
- 6:49this authority. As Matthews has noted, it is
- 6:52very significant that the Lord brought about this new procedure
- 6:55through Peter, who, as the senior apostle of the Church,
- 6:59could exercise all the priests and keys and held the proper
- 7:03office through which such direction from the Lord should
- 7:05come. Ultimately, the decision was
- 7:08based on revelation from the Lord and the scope of Peter's
- 7:12vision and Acts. Chapter 10 had not gone further
- 7:15than the issues of Gentile baptism and certain food laws.
- 7:19This council was not, as later councils in the 3rd century and
- 7:23beyond were convened by political authorities or a wide
- 7:27array of bishops seeking authority and prominence.
- 7:31Rather, this was a council of Apostles ordained to lead the
- 7:35Church through their priest and authority.
- 7:38The decision of this council shows the importance of
- 7:40unanimity among the Apostles, thereby reflecting the will of
- 7:44the Lord. The Lord has revealed that every
- 7:48decision of the Quorum of the 12 Apostles must be by the
- 7:51unanimous voice of the same that is, every member must be agreed
- 7:57to its decisions in order to make their decisions of the same
- 8:00power or validity one with another.
- 8:03This instruction, given through the Prophet Joseph Smith, is
- 8:06reflected in the Jerusalem Council.
- 8:08All the apostles present needed to come to a decision
- 8:11unanimously before they could submit that decision to the
- 8:14Church as the Word and Will of the Lord.
- 8:17That requirement is likewise followed today.
- 8:21Just like the ancient apostles, the First Presidency and Quorum
- 8:24of the 12 Apostles will occasionally have to deal with a
- 8:27conflict between culture and doctrine.
- 8:30The need for unanimity is especially important when such
- 8:33conflicts arise that in order to speak the mind and will of the
- 8:37Lord and not just follow their personal views or values, the
- 8:40apostles defer to revelation. Likewise, all church members as
- 8:45true disciples of Jesus Christ, must be willing and able to give
- 8:49up long held traditions when they conflict with living the
- 8:52principles of the Gospel. When the Lord gave Peter the
- 8:56priest and keys to preside over the Church, he made it clear
- 8:59that the Kingdom of God must be built upon the Rock of
- 9:02Revelation. Because of the Lord's inspired
- 9:05guidance, we can rest assured that when the leaders of the
- 9:08Church unanimously offer a new instruction or proclamation
- 9:12declaring the doctrine of the Church, this is the word and
- 9:16will of the Lord for our lives. With this assurance, we can all
- 9:19faithfully align our will with the Lord's and move forward
- 9:23along the covenant path. Thank you for listening to this
