- 0:11Hello, friends. It's Sean here.
- 0:13It's Wednesday. It's the 12th of March.
- 0:17Great to have your company. We have hit hump day the middle
- 0:20of the week. No matter how tricky it's been,
- 0:23you're pretty much halfway there.
- 0:24Well done. And after today, it's all
- 0:26downhill. And well, that is pretty much a
- 0:31very good summary of how we're going to go in our Bible reading
- 0:34as well. Today we will see Josiah working
- 0:38hard to reform everything that's happening in the land of Judah
- 0:42to be according to God's will and God's teaching and God's
- 0:46law. And then they'll go over that
- 0:49hump and then it all goes to pot.
- 0:50And and it will until the end of the week when we will see
- 0:55Babylon come and destroy it all. Oh dear.
- 0:59Good thing just did not last in that place, did it?
- 1:02So let's hear about the high point and then the descent as we
- 1:06read together. Second Kings chapter 23.
- 1:20Then the king summoned all the elders of Judah and Jerusalem,
- 1:24and the king went up to the temple of the Lord with all the
- 1:27people of Judah and Jerusalem, along with the priests and the
- 1:31prophets, all the people from the least to the greatest.
- 1:35There the king read to them the entire book of the covenant that
- 1:39had been found in the Lord's temple.
- 1:42The king took his place of authority beside the pillar and
- 1:46renewed the covenant in the Lord's presence.
- 1:49He pledged to obey the Lord by keeping all His commands, laws
- 1:53and decrees with all his heart and soul.
- 1:57In this way he confirmed all the terms of the covenant that were
- 2:01written in the scroll, and all the people pledged themselves to
- 2:05the covenant. Then the king instructed Helkia,
- 2:09the high priest and the priests of the second rank and the
- 2:13temple gatekeepers to remove from the Lord's temple all the
- 2:17articles that were used to worship Baal Asharah and all the
- 2:20powers of the heavens. The king had all these things
- 2:24burned outside Jerusalem on the terraces of the Kidron Valley,
- 2:29and he carried the ashes away to Bethel.
- 2:31He did away with the idolatrous priests who had been appointed
- 2:35by the previous kings of Judah, for they had offered sacrifices
- 2:39at the Pagan shrines throughout Judah and even in the vicinity
- 2:43of Jerusalem. They had also offered sacrifices
- 2:46to Bal and to the sun, the moon, the constellations, and to all
- 2:50the powers of the heavens. The king removed the Asharapole
- 2:54from the Lord's Temple and took it outside Jerusalem to the
- 2:57Kidron Valley, where he burned it.
- 3:01Then he ground the ashes of the pole to dust and threw the dust
- 3:05over the graves of the people. He also tore down the living
- 3:09quarters of the male and female shrine prostitutes that were
- 3:13inside the Temple of the Lord, where the women wove coverings
- 3:17for the asharapole. Josiah brought to Jerusalem all
- 3:21the priests who were living in other towns of Judah.
- 3:24He also defiled the Pagan shrines where they had offered
- 3:27sacrifices all the way from Giba to Bathsheba.
- 3:31He destroyed the shrines at the entrance to the Gate of Joshua,
- 3:35the governor of Jerusalem. This gate was located to the
- 3:39left of the city gate as one enters the city.
- 3:42The priests who had served at the Pagan shrines were not
- 3:45allowed to serve at the Lord's altar in Jerusalem, but they
- 3:48were allowed to eat unleavened bread with the other priests.
- 3:52Then the king defiled the altar of Topheth in the valley of Ben
- 3:56Hidam, so no one could ever again use it to sacrifice a son
- 4:01or daughter in the fire. As an offering to Molech, he
- 4:05removed from the entrance of the Lord's temple the horse statues
- 4:09that the former kings of Judah had dedicated to the Son.
- 4:13They were near the quarters of Nathan Molech, the eunuch, an
- 4:16officer of the court. The king also burned the
- 4:19Chariots dedicated to the sun. Josiah tore down the altars that
- 4:23the kings of Judah had built on the palace roof above the upper
- 4:28room of Ahaz. The king destroyed the altars
- 4:31that Manasseh had built in the two courtyards of the Lord's
- 4:34Temple. He smashed them to bits and
- 4:36scattered the pieces in the Kidron Valley.
- 4:39The king also desecrated the Pagan shrines east of Jerusalem,
- 4:43to the South of the Mount of Corruption, where King Solomon
- 4:46of Israel had built shrines for Ashtoreth, the detestable
- 4:51goddess of the Cydonians, and for Kimosh, the detestable God
- 4:55of the Moabites, and for Molech, the vile God of the Ammonites.
- 4:59He smashed the sacred pillars and cut down the ashrupoles.
- 5:03Then he desecrated these places by scattering human bones over
- 5:07them. The king also tore down the
- 5:10altar at Bethel, the Pagan shrine that Jeroboam, son of
- 5:14Nibat, had made when he caused Israel to sin.
- 5:18He burned down the shrine and ground it to dust, and he burned
- 5:22the ashrupole. Then Josiah turned around and
- 5:26noticed several tombs in the side of the hill.
- 5:28He ordered that the bones be brought out, and he burned them
- 5:32on the altar at Bethel to desecrate it.
- 5:35This happened just as the Lord had promised through the man of
- 5:39God when Jeroboam stood beside the altar at the festival.
- 5:43Then Josiah turned and looked up at the tomb of the man of God
- 5:47who had predicted these things. What is that monument over
- 5:50there? Josiah asked, and the people of
- 5:54the town told him. It is the tomb of the man of God
- 5:57who came from Judah and predicted the very things that
- 6:01you have just done to the altar at Bethel.
- 6:04Josiah replied. Leave it alone, don't disturb
- 6:08his bones. So that did not burn his bones
- 6:12or those that the old prophet from Samaria.
- 6:15Then Josiah demolished all the buildings at the Pagan shrines
- 6:19in the towns of Samaria, just as he had done at Bethel.
- 6:23They had been built by the various kings of Israel and had
- 6:26made the Lord very angry. He executed the priests of the
- 6:30Pagan shrines on their own altars, and he burned human
- 6:34bones and the altars to desecrate them.
- 6:37Finally, he returned to Jerusalem.
- 6:41King Josiah then issued this order to all the people.
- 6:45You must celebrate the Passover to the Lord your God as required
- 6:49in this book of the covenant. There had not been a Passover
- 6:53celebration like that since the time when the judges ruled in
- 6:56Israel, nor throughout all the years of the kings of Israel and
- 7:00Judah. But in the 18th year of King
- 7:03Josiah's reign, this Passover was celebrated to the Lord in
- 7:07Jerusalem. Josiah also got rid of the
- 7:11mediums and psychics, the household gods, the idols, and
- 7:15every other kind of detestable practise, both in Jerusalem and
- 7:19throughout the land of Judea. He did this in obedience to the
- 7:23laws written in the scroll that Hilkia the priest had found in
- 7:27the Lord's temple. Never before had there been a
- 7:30king like Josiah who turned to the Lord with all his heart and
- 7:35soul and strength, obeying all the laws of Moses, and there has
- 7:41never been a king like him since.
- 7:44Even so, the Lord was very angry with Judah because of all the
- 7:49wicked things Manasseh had done to provoke him.
- 7:52For the Lord said, I will also banish Judah from my presence,
- 7:56just as I've banished Israel, and I will reject my chosen city
- 8:01of Jerusalem and the temple where my name was to be
- 8:05honoured. The rest of the events in
- 8:08Josiah's reign and all his deeds are recorded in the Book of the
- 8:12History of the Kings of Judah. While Josiah was king, Pharaoh
- 8:17Neko, king of Egypt, went to the Euphrates River to help the king
- 8:21of Assyria. King Josiah and his army marched
- 8:25out to fight him, but King Neko killed him.
- 8:29When there met at Megiddo, Josiah's officers took his body
- 8:33back in a chariot from Megiddo to Jerusalem and buried him in
- 8:38his own tomb. Then the people of the land
- 8:41anointed Josiah's son Jehoahaz and made him the next king.
- 8:46Jehoahaz was 23 years old when he became king, and he reigned
- 8:51in Jerusalem three months. His mother was Hamut al, the
- 8:56daughter of Jeremiah from Libna. He did what was evil in the
- 9:01Lord's sight, just as his ancestors had done.
- 9:05Pharaoh Niko put Jehoahas in prison at Ribla in the land of
- 9:10Hamath to prevent him from ruling in Jerusalem.
- 9:14He also demanded that Judah pay 7500 lbs of silver and 75 lbs of
- 9:20gold as tribute. Pharaoh Nikko then installed
- 9:25Eliakim, another of Josiah's sons, to reign in place of his
- 9:29father, and he changed Eliakim's name to Jehovah Kim.
- 9:34Jehovah has was taken to Egypt as a prisoner where he died.
- 9:38In order to get the silver and gold demanded as tribute by
- 9:41Pharaoh Nikko, Jehovah Kim collected a tax from the people
- 9:45of Judah requiring them to pay in proportion to their wealth.
- 9:50Jehoiakim was 25 years old when he became king, and he reigned
- 9:55in Jerusalem 11 years. His mother was Zebedah, the
- 9:59daughter of Pedaya from Rumah. He did what was evil in the
- 10:04Lord's sight, just as his ancestors had done.
- 10:17Ah, Lord, it's heartbreaking when we see all this incredibly
- 10:21thorough work that Josiah does. I need to have it undone in a
- 10:25matter of months. By sons, our Lord, it can be so
- 10:31disheartening when we toil away in the right direction and we
- 10:35see evil just take away all of our hard work, or we see the
- 10:40tide turn against the work that we've been patiently and
- 10:43diligently persevering with. Our Lord, I pray that you
- 10:47continue to give us your staying power, to give us your
- 10:52perseverance, so that small step by small step, we can continue
- 10:58in your direction even even when the tide is pushing everything
- 11:02back faster than it seems that we're able to move.
- 11:07Oh Lord, we live in a broken world, but we serve a glorious
- 11:11God. Continue to draw US ever nearer
- 11:15to You, step by step, day by day, moment by moment, sometimes
- 11:21so that we can emulate Jesus through the power of the Holy
- 11:25Spirit to bring your Kingdom ever nearer here on earth as it
- 11:30is in heaven. And we pray all of this in your
- 11:33name, Jesus, Amen.
