The System That Formed You — Why We Become Who We Become · The Whole Hearted Woman

SPEAKER_00: There are voices that shape us long before we realize they're shaping us: expectations, fear, performance, comparison, rejection, pressure.
• 0:15
SPEAKER_00: And over time, those voices don't just influence behavior, they begin forming our identity.
• 0:22
SPEAKER_00: Welcome to the Whole Hearted Woman Podcast.
• 0:24
  SPEAKER_00: I'm Kristen Ray.
• 0:26
SPEAKER_00: This is a space where we believe the need for healing is not a failure of faith.
• 0:30
SPEAKER_00: And today, we're going to name something that has been quietly shaping your heart for a very long time.
• 0:37
SPEAKER_00: I want to share something with you.
• 0:39
SPEAKER_00: There was a moment, not dramatic, actually very normal.
• 0:43
SPEAKER_00: I honestly don't even remember exactly what the conversation was even about.
• 0:48
SPEAKER_00: That's part of what struck me later.
• 0:51
SPEAKER_00: It wasn't some dramatic moment.
• 0:54
SPEAKER_00: It was how ordinary this pattern had become.
• 0:57
SPEAKER_00: I was sitting in my car after a conversation.
• 1:01
SPEAKER_00: There was nothing significant that had happened.
• 1:03
SPEAKER_00: It was a regular interaction, but I noticed something within myself.
• 1:08
SPEAKER_00: I noticed how quickly I adjusted, how I softened what I really felt, and how I made it okay again.
• 1:15
SPEAKER_00: And something hit me, not loudly and not with great drama, but quietly.
• 1:21
SPEAKER_00: Why does this feel so normal to me?
• 1:24
SPEAKER_00: Not why is this happening, but why do I know how to live like this so well?
• 1:30
SPEAKER_00: And at that moment I realize this isn't just a situation I'm in.
• 1:35
SPEAKER_00: Something in me has formed to stay here, to respond this way, to keep adjusting and keep choosing this.
• 1:44
SPEAKER_00: I didn't have language for it then, but I understand it now.
• 1:48
  SPEAKER_00: I wasn't just responding, I had been formed.
• 1:52
SPEAKER_00: In the last episode, we talked about something beautiful.
• 1:55
SPEAKER_00: We talked about the truth that before anything in your life formed a version of you, God already knew you.
• 2:02
SPEAKER_00: Before fear, before hiding, before performance, before pain.
• 2:08
SPEAKER_00: There was an original design, and maybe for some of you that brought both comfort and grief.
• 2:15
SPEAKER_00: Because maybe something inside you recognize, I don't think I've been living from that place for a very long time.
• 2:22
SPEAKER_00: And today I want to talk about why.
• 2:24
SPEAKER_00: Not with shame, not with blame, but honestly and in the best way I can.
• 2:29
SPEAKER_00: Because there are things in this world that quietly teach us how to become.
• 2:32
SPEAKER_00: And over time, we can begin building an identity apart from intimacy with God.
• 2:39
SPEAKER_00: So I want to take you to the very beginning, not because we're doing a Bible study, but because the answer to what happened to our heart is there in the third chapter of the very first book of Scripture, Genesis 3.
• 2:51
SPEAKER_00: So let's walk through it slowly because what happens here is not just the story of Adam and Eve.
• 2:56
SPEAKER_00: It's the story of every human heart that has ever been formed apart from God.
• 3:02
SPEAKER_00: It begins with a question, and it's not a dramatic one, but a subtle one.
• 3:07
  SPEAKER_00: Did God really say?
• 3:09
  SPEAKER_00: And that's it.
• 3:11
  SPEAKER_00: It's not a declaration or a command, just a question.
• 3:15
SPEAKER_00: And here's what I want you to notice Formation doesn't begin with rebellion, it begins with a shift in what is trusted.
• 3:24
SPEAKER_00: Just one question, one subtle introduction of doubt into what God had clearly said.
• 3:31
SPEAKER_00: And then the heart moves almost imperceptibly from receiving truth to evaluating truth through its own filter.
• 3:39
SPEAKER_00: And then a new belief is planted.
• 3:41
SPEAKER_00: You will be like God.
• 3:43
SPEAKER_00: Do you hear what that's saying?
• 3:45
SPEAKER_00: It's saying you're not enough as you are.
• 3:47
SPEAKER_00: You must become something more apart from Him.
• 3:50
SPEAKER_00: That's identity distortion at its most fundamental level.
• 3:54
SPEAKER_00: And it didn't arrive loudly, it arrived as an invitation, a possibility, as something that seemed reasonable and good and worth reaching for.
• 4:05
SPEAKER_00: And then desire is redirected.
• 4:08
SPEAKER_00: The fruit becomes desirable, pleasing, good in her own eyes.
• 4:13
SPEAKER_00: And here is what I want you to sit with.
• 4:16
SPEAKER_00: The heart doesn't change what it does, it changes what it wants, what it reaches for, what feels normal, what feels safe, what feels like home.
• 4:28
  SPEAKER_00: And behavior follows belief.
• 4:31
SPEAKER_00: She takes, she eats, not because she is fundamentally bad, but because something shifted in what she trusted, what she believed, what she desired, before she ever reached out her hand.
• 4:45
SPEAKER_00: The heart gets formed apart from God when it begins to trust a voice other than his and it starts building an identity from that.
• 4:54
SPEAKER_00: That is not just Eve's story, that's the story of every heart that has ever lived in a world where other voices speak louder than his, including yours and including mine.
• 5:05
SPEAKER_00: The Apostle Paul, writing years later, names what Genesis 3 started.
• 5:12
SPEAKER_00: Do not be conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind.
• 5:19
SPEAKER_00: I used to read that verse mostly as behavior modification, but now I think it reaches much deeper.
• 5:26
SPEAKER_00: Because conformity is not just external.
• 5:30
SPEAKER_00: Sometimes the deepest conformity happens in the heart when we slowly become shaped by fear instead of formed by love.
• 5:38
SPEAKER_00: The word conformed is important here.
• 5:40
SPEAKER_00: Paul doesn't say don't make a one-time decision to follow the world.
• 5:45
SPEAKER_00: He says don't be conformed.
• 5:47
SPEAKER_00: Because confirmation is not a decision, it's a process.
• 5:51
  SPEAKER_00: It's slow, it's gradual.
• 5:54
SPEAKER_00: It's so normal that most of the time you don't even feel it's happening.
• 5:59
SPEAKER_00: Scripture actually has a name for the system that forms people apart from God.
• 6:04
SPEAKER_00: And I want to introduce it carefully because it can feel heavy or distant if it's not handled honestly.
• 6:10
SPEAKER_00: The Bible calls it Babylon.
• 6:13
SPEAKER_00: Babylon was a real place in Scripture, but throughout the Bible, Babylon also becomes a picture of something deeper.
• 6:20
SPEAKER_00: It's a system, it's a way of living and a place where identity becomes shaped by power, survival, pressure, and performance.
• 6:29
  SPEAKER_00: Basically, separation from God.
• 6:32
SPEAKER_00: And I want to say this: Babylon is not just out there.
• 6:36
SPEAKER_00: Sometimes Babylon is what's formed inside of us.
• 6:41
SPEAKER_00: So let me make this specific because Babylon formation doesn't arrive with a label, it arrives as voices.
• 6:48
SPEAKER_00: Voices that taught you, you are what you achieve, you are what people think of you, you must stay useful to stay loved, you must stay strong to stay safe.
• 6:59
SPEAKER_00: You can't let people see your weakness.
• 7:02
SPEAKER_00: You have to manage yourself carefully to belong.
• 7:05
  SPEAKER_00: Talk about eggshells.
• 7:07
SPEAKER_00: And after a while, you don't even realize those voices are shaping you anymore because they seem normal.
• 7:13
SPEAKER_00: Maybe you learned very early how to read the room, how to keep the peace, how to avoid rejection, how to avoid confrontation, how to perform, how to become what was needed.
• 7:26
SPEAKER_00: And maybe people even praised those things you did.
• 7:30
SPEAKER_00: Maybe they called you mature, dependent.
• 7:33
SPEAKER_00: Oh, she's look at her, she's so smart, she's strong, selfless, capable.
• 7:38
SPEAKER_00: While quietly underneath it all, your heart was learning who I truly am is not safe to bring forward.
• 7:47
SPEAKER_00: And this is how identity slowly forms apart from truth, not usually through rebellion, but through adaptation.
• 7:55
SPEAKER_00: There's something in scripture that I want to show you now because I think it illuminates what Babylon does to identity in a way that is deeply personal.
• 8:04
SPEAKER_00: It's in the book of Daniel, when the Babylonians took captives, one of the first things they did was rename them.
• 8:12
SPEAKER_00: Daniel, whose name meant God is my judge, was given a Babylonian name.
• 8:18
SPEAKER_00: His identity was the first thing the system tried to change, and I think many women know what that feels like.
• 8:24
  SPEAKER_00: Not literally, but internally.
• 8:26
SPEAKER_00: You were named by wounds, you were named by rejection, fear, expectations, disappointment, comparison, and after a while you began answering to names God never gave you, like not enough, too much, too needy, too sensitive, too broken, too far gone.
• 8:46
SPEAKER_00: Those are not your names.
• 8:48
  SPEAKER_00: They never were.
• 8:49
SPEAKER_00: They are Babylonian names, given by a system that had no authority to define you.
• 8:55
SPEAKER_00: Can I ask you something now?
• 8:57
SPEAKER_00: Is there a way you respond, a pattern you live inside of that feels so natural you never thought to question it?
• 9:04
SPEAKER_00: Not a dramatic pattern, but a normal one.
• 9:07
SPEAKER_00: The way you shrink in certain conversations, the way you overexplain when you say no, or the way you feel responsible for everyone else's emotional state but yours.
• 9:17
SPEAKER_00: The way you can't quite rest without feeling guilty.
• 9:21
SPEAKER_00: That pattern didn't come from nowhere, it was formed.
• 9:25
SPEAKER_00: It was formed in real moments through real voices inside real systems that shaped what you believed about yourself, about others, and about God.
• 9:34
SPEAKER_00: And it feels normal because you've been living inside it for so long.
• 9:38
SPEAKER_00: And maybe this episode is simply about beginning to notice what voices have been shaping me, what systems taught me how to become.
• 9:46
SPEAKER_00: What have I agreed with about myself that God never actually said?
• 9:50
SPEAKER_00: Because here's what I want you to hold above everything else today.
• 9:54
SPEAKER_00: The voice that formed you in survival is not greater than the voice that knew you before you were formed.
• 10:00
SPEAKER_00: God's voice was first, and it's still speaking.
• 10:04
SPEAKER_00: He's saying, You are mine.
• 10:06
SPEAKER_00: I knew you before any of this began, and I am not finished with what I started.
• 10:12
  SPEAKER_00: That's so encouraging.
• 10:13
SPEAKER_00: I want to be honest about something before we close, because God is not standing outside the system shaking his head at you.
• 10:20
SPEAKER_00: He is not disappointed that you were formed by something you didn't fully understand or consciously choose.
• 10:26
SPEAKER_00: He is the one who, from the very beginning, has been calling his people out of every system that promised life but couldn't ever deliver it.
• 10:34
SPEAKER_00: He's saying, Come out of her, my people.
• 10:37
SPEAKER_00: That is not a call of condemnation, and it's not a shout of anger.
• 10:42
SPEAKER_00: It's the voice of a father who sees exactly what formed you, who understands every moment that shaped the pattern, and is saying, You don't have to stay there anymore.
• 10:52
SPEAKER_00: And maybe that's where you are right now, not in a dramatic moment, just a quiet one, a moment where something in you is saying, wait, that explains everything.
• 11:03
SPEAKER_00: Not fear, not shame, not the feeling of being accused, just recognition.
• 11:09
SPEAKER_00: The quiet landing of a truth that has always been true, but has never been named quite this clearly before.
• 11:15
SPEAKER_00: The way I've been living didn't come from who God created me to be, it was formed in me.
• 11:21
SPEAKER_00: And if that sentence just landed somewhere in your heart, that's not condemnation, that's the beginning of something.
• 11:28
SPEAKER_00: If something in this episode is stirring, if you're beginning to recognize the system that has been quietly forming your heart, I created the heart healing starter guide as your next step.
• 11:39
SPEAKER_00: I walk you gently through the five movements of the whole hearted woman journey, helping you to identify what has been forming you and what God's restoration looks like in those specific places.
• 11:51
SPEAKER_00: I have the link in the show notes.
• 11:53
SPEAKER_00: Before we pray, I want to plant one more seed.
• 11:56
SPEAKER_00: We've talked today about the heart and how it gets formed, the voices that entered, the beliefs that were planted, the patterns that developed, the system that continued it.
• 12:08
SPEAKER_00: But here's the honest question that follows.
• 12:11
SPEAKER_00: If this system has been forming us without our conscious choice, why does it stay even when I can see it?
• 12:18
SPEAKER_00: Why does recognition alone not enough to change it?
• 12:22
SPEAKER_00: And that's where we're going next, because there is something deeper than the pattern itself, something the heart agreed to along the way that keeps the formation in place long after the original moment has passed.
• 12:35
SPEAKER_00: Understanding that changes everything, so stay close.
• 12:39
SPEAKER_00: And before we pray, I want to speak something over you and declare: you are not the voices that formed you.
• 12:46
SPEAKER_00: You are not the Babylonian names given to you by wounds, by rejection, by fear, or by a system that had no authority to define you.
• 12:56
SPEAKER_00: You are not the pattern.
• 12:58
SPEAKER_00: You are not the adaptation.
• 13:00
SPEAKER_00: You are not the adjusted, performed, carefully managed version of yourself that learned to survive inside something that was never designed by God.
• 13:09
SPEAKER_00: You are the woman he formed before any of that began, named by him, known by him, chosen by him, before the voices ever arrived, before the system shaped you, before survival became your way of living.
• 13:23
SPEAKER_00: And those names he gave you are beloved, known, chosen, formed with intention, and set apart.
• 13:31
SPEAKER_00: Those names have never changed.
• 13:34
SPEAKER_00: No Babylonian system has ever had the authority to take them from you.
• 13:39
SPEAKER_00: And God is calling you gently and persistently without pressure back to the name He gave you before anything else did.
• 13:48
SPEAKER_00: So now I want to end in prayer.
• 13:49
SPEAKER_00: Father, you see her right now.
• 13:51
SPEAKER_00: You see the voices that shaped her, the expectations, the fear, the performance, the pain, the damage, the wounds, the comparison that felt so normal she never thought to question them.
• 14:02
SPEAKER_00: You see the name she's been answering to that you never gave her, and you're not surprised, and you're not disappointed, and you're not distant.
• 14:11
SPEAKER_00: You are right here, right now, right in the middle of the recognition.
• 14:15
SPEAKER_00: Lord, let this be the moment something shifts, not dramatically, not all at once, but quietly, the way you do most of your deepest work, just wrapping your love around everybody.
• 14:26
SPEAKER_00: Speak your name for her above every other name she has been called.
• 14:30
SPEAKER_00: Let her hear above the voice of fear, above the voice of performance, above the voice of doubt and not enough, your voice.
• 14:39
SPEAKER_00: The one that knew her before any of the voices ever arrived, the one that says, You are mine.
• 14:44
SPEAKER_00: I formed you, I know you, and I'm leading you home.
• 14:48
SPEAKER_00: Begin the work of calling her out, not with condemnation, not with pressure, because that's not who you are, but with the same love that has been pursuing her from the very beginning.
• 14:59
SPEAKER_00: She's coming, Lord, not perfectly and not all at once, but she's turning toward you.
• 15:04
SPEAKER_00: And thank you that you're meeting every turn with mercy, every single time.
• 15:09
SPEAKER_00: In Jesus' name we pray.
• 15:11
  SPEAKER_00: Amen.
• 15:12
SPEAKER_00: Today I don't want you leaving this episode afraid of the world.
• 15:15
SPEAKER_00: I want you leaving aware and hopeful and encouraged.
• 15:19
SPEAKER_00: Aware that some of the ways you've learned to survive may have slowly disconnected you from the heart of God, but that's okay.
• 15:26
  SPEAKER_00: Awareness is not rejection.
• 15:28
SPEAKER_00: Awareness is the beginning of restoration because God is not trying to shame the parts of you that adapted.
• 15:35
SPEAKER_00: He is gently leading you out of the systems that taught you to live apart from his life.
• 15:40
SPEAKER_00: You're not behind, you're not broken, and you're not too forward to be restored.
• 15:46
SPEAKER_00: If this episode found for you today, share it with a woman in your life who you sense has been answering today's call never gave me.
• 15:54
SPEAKER_00: You don't have to say anything complicated.
• 15:56
SPEAKER_00: Just say, hey, I thought of you.
• 15:59
  SPEAKER_00: Shouldn't know why.
• 16:01
SPEAKER_00: And please follow or subscribe to the Whole Hearted Woman podcast so you don't miss what's coming next.
• 16:06
SPEAKER_00: Because next week, we're moving somewhere that I believe will bring the deepest understanding yet to why the pattern stays, even when you can see it.
• 16:15
  SPEAKER_00: So come back.
• 16:16
  SPEAKER_00: There's more for you.
