- 0:00Speaker 1: Protesters in Europe, Australia and South America have taken to
- 0:04Speaker 1: the streets to condemn Israel's interception of an AID flotilla
- 0:08Speaker 1: challenging the blockade of Gaza. The Israelis detained more than
- 0:11Speaker 1: four hundred foreign activists to board forty vessels and plan
- 0:15Speaker 1: to deport them. The Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin NETANYAHUO said
- 0:19Speaker 1: the Israeli Navy had repelled a campaign of delegitimization against Israel.
- 0:24Speaker 1: Inside Gaza, officials say Israeli strikes killed at least fifty
- 0:28Speaker 1: two people on Thursday. Meanwhile, thousands of Palestinians continue to
- 0:32Speaker 1: flee Gaza City amid an ongoing Israeli ground offensive to
- 0:36Speaker 1: take full control of the area. Meanwhile, the White House
- 0:39Speaker 1: says President Trump will draw a red line on how
- 0:42Speaker 1: long to wait for Hamas to respond to a US
- 0:45Speaker 1: proposal aimed at ending the war in Gaza. On Tuesday,
- 0:49Speaker 1: mister Trump said that Hamas had three to four days
- 0:52Speaker 1: to reply to his twenty point framework, which has largely
- 0:55Speaker 1: been accepted by Israel. While our correspondent Barbara Plett usher
- 1:00Speaker 1: I spoke to us from Jerusalem with the latest on
- 1:02Speaker 1: the detained activists.
- 1:04Speaker 2: The last number I saw of those who'd been detained
- 1:06Speaker 2: was four hundred and forty three foreign activists from many
- 1:09Speaker 2: different countries, a lot of them from Europe, some of
- 1:12Speaker 2: them from South America. So you had widespread protests once
- 1:15Speaker 2: they were detained. Protests in Spain, in Belgium, in Switzerland,
- 1:20Speaker 2: in Italy and Italy they're calling a strike today to
- 1:23Speaker 2: show solidarity. Also protests in Buenics Aires in Brazilia. So
- 1:27Speaker 2: very widespread reaction to what happened. A number of harsh
- 1:31Speaker 2: commendations from several governments, from Colombia, from Turkey. But the
- 1:37Speaker 2: Israelis say that they handled this responsibly. They said it
- 1:41Speaker 2: was a major operation because there were some forty two boats.
- 1:44Speaker 2: They picked up the activists in international waters, and they
- 1:49Speaker 2: filmed themselves doing that in posted clips later saying that
- 1:52Speaker 2: all of the activists were safe. They also said that
- 1:55Speaker 2: they had checked the boats looking for this aid that
- 1:58Speaker 2: the flotilla was carrying at their they didn't really find much,
- 2:01Speaker 2: which they say basically bolstered their claim that this was
- 2:05Speaker 2: all a stunt or a provocation, but it was an
- 2:08Speaker 2: actual fact, a very high profile demonstration of opposition to
- 2:12Speaker 2: gazas to to the blockade of Gaza, where famine has
- 2:16Speaker 2: been declared, the intense international opposition to it that has
- 2:19Speaker 2: been growing. There have been a number there were a
- 2:21Speaker 2: number of famous or high profile people on board, the
- 2:25Speaker 2: grandson of Nelson Mandela, several European politicians. So it does
- 2:29Speaker 2: show that global solidarity with the Palestinians has been growing
- 2:33Speaker 2: over the past year.
- 2:34Speaker 1: Yeah, let's talk about Gaza because the Israeli military push
- 2:38Speaker 1: that continues, and we are awaiting the response from Hamas
- 2:44Speaker 1: to the peace plan put forward by President Trump. What's
- 2:48Speaker 1: the latest on that? President Trump saying is drawing a
- 2:51Speaker 1: red line he'd given he'd given us sort of loose
- 2:53Speaker 1: time frame, had they so three or four days?
- 2:58Speaker 2: Yes, he gave that loose time frame in the week,
- 3:00Speaker 2: so that would be about now really, but he didn't
- 3:03Speaker 2: make it a firm deadline. Still, everybody is waiting to
- 3:06Speaker 2: see what Hamas says to the peace plan. The mediators
- 3:09Speaker 2: cut our Turkey Egypt are pressing very hard for Hamas
- 3:13Speaker 2: to accept this plan, even though they themselves have reservations
- 3:16Speaker 2: about it, but they see it as a way that
- 3:18Speaker 2: could end the war. Now. BBC sources say that they
- 3:23Speaker 2: have made contact or that the mediators have made contact
- 3:28Speaker 2: with the head of the military wing in gaze Zdina
- 3:31Speaker 2: Hadad and they are reporting, and we understand that he
- 3:35Speaker 2: is not inclined to accept the plan, that he basically
- 3:37Speaker 2: believes that this is a plan to finish off Hamas,
- 3:40Speaker 2: whether the group accepts it or not, and so it's
- 3:42Speaker 2: better to fight until the end. There are a number
- 3:45Speaker 2: of problems that the Hamas has with the plant. In particular,
- 3:50Speaker 2: it calls on the group to disarm now. The group
- 3:53Speaker 2: has said it would not disarm until a sovereign Palestinian
- 3:57Speaker 2: state was declared. That's been its position until now. Another
- 4:00Speaker 2: thing that Hamasa's problems with is the demand that all
- 4:03Speaker 2: of the hostages there are forty eight hostages, around twenty
- 4:06Speaker 2: of whom still believed to be alive, be handed over
- 4:09Speaker 2: at the beginning of this process, So in the first
- 4:12Speaker 2: seventy two hours all the hostages would be handed over,
- 4:14Speaker 2: rather than in phases like previous cease fires, and Hamas
- 4:17Speaker 2: sort of sees this as giving away their only card
- 4:20Speaker 2: right at the beginning, which would make them vulnerable. They
- 4:22Speaker 2: don't trust President Trump's guarantee that Israel would not restart
- 4:26Speaker 2: the war, as soon as it gets its hostages back,
- 4:28Speaker 2: especially after Israel attacked the Hamas leadership and Katar. So
- 4:33Speaker 2: these are some of the misgivings that they have. It
- 4:36Speaker 2: should be said that the Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Ettaniel,
- 4:38Speaker 2: who accepted the plan officially in Washington, but in Israel,
- 4:42Speaker 2: he has also been pushing back on the terms in
- 4:44Speaker 2: his statements. For example, he says it will allow the
- 4:47Speaker 2: Israelis to retain parts of Gaza, which is not what
- 4:50Speaker 2: the plan says. It says they would move to a
- 4:51Speaker 2: security buffer on the edge of the strip. It also
- 4:55Speaker 2: says that there's an insistence there will not be a
- 4:58Speaker 2: Palestinian state, and in fact the plan and says that
- 5:01Speaker 2: there might be a credible path to a Palestinian state
- 5:04Speaker 2: if everything works out. So he has put his own
- 5:06Speaker 2: take on the terms. But right now what everyone is
- 5:10Speaker 2: waiting for is to see how Hamas officially responds to
- 5:14Speaker 2: what many are hoping could be a way to end
- 5:16Speaker 2: the Gaza war.
- 5:18Speaker 1: Now, as Barbara Presasha reporting there from Jerusalem, and let's
- 5:22Speaker 1: just take another look at those pictures, they're nine vessels
- 5:26Speaker 1: as part of that flotilla of activists making their way
- 5:30Speaker 1: towards Gaza. As we've been reporting this morning, Israelis have
- 5:33Speaker 1: detained more than four hundred foreign activists in those street
- 5:36Speaker 1: protests taking place across Europe, across Australia, and across South America.
- 5:41Speaker 1: Lots of international eyes on that flotilla as it carries
- 5:46Speaker 1: on
