- Lucas: Hey Luna, ready for another episode of Learn French with Fexingo? Luna: Absolutely! I've been practicing my French all week. Lucas: That's great to hear. Today we're going to talk about asking for directions in French. Luna: Oh perfect, because I always get lost in new cities. I need to know how to ask where things are. Lucas: Exactly. So let's start with a basic question: 'Where is the train station?' In French, that's 'Où est la gare?' Luna: Où est la gare? Lucas: Yes! And if you need to ask 'Is it far from here?' you say 'C'est loin d'ici?' Luna: C'est loin d'ici? Lucas: Perfect. Now, imagine you're told to turn left. You'd hear 'Il faut tourner à gauche.' Luna: Il faut tourner à gauche. Lucas: Or if they say 'It's on the right,' that's 'C'est à droite.' Luna: C'est à droite. Lucas: And if someone tells you it's close by, they might say 'Oui, c'est tout près.' Luna: Oui, c'est tout près. Lucas: Or if it's far: 'Non, c'est assez loin.' Luna: Non, c'est assez loin. Lucas: Let's practice a little dialogue. You're lost and you ask me: 'Où est la gare?' Luna: Où est la gare? Lucas: I answer: 'C'est à droite. Il faut tourner à gauche d'abord.' Luna: Wait, so it's on the right but I turn left first? That's confusing. Lucas: Yeah, that was tricky. Let me rephrase: 'Il faut tourner à gauche, puis c'est à droite.' Luna: Il faut tourner à gauche, puis c'est à droite. Okay, so turn left, then it's on the right. Lucas: Exactly. Now, if you're not sure about the distance, you can ask 'C'est loin d'ici?' Luna: C'est loin d'ici? Lucas: And I might reply 'Non, c'est tout près.' Luna: Non, c'est tout près. So not far at all. Lucas: Right. Let's do another quick one. You're looking for a museum. How would you ask? Luna: Où est le musée? Lucas: Perfect. And if I say 'C'est assez loin,' you know it's far. Luna: So I might need to take a bus or something. Lucas: Yeah. And speaking of learning on the go, if Fexingo has been helping you make actual progress with French, consider supporting the show. It helps us keep making episodes ad-free. Now, back to directions — let's practice 'C'est tout près' and 'C'est assez loin' a bit more. Luna: Great. So if something is close, I say 'C'est tout près.' Lucas: And if it's far, 'C'est assez loin.' Luna: C'est assez loin. Got it. Lucas: Let's put it all together. Imagine you're in Paris and you ask a local: 'Excusez-moi, où est la tour Eiffel?' Luna: Excusez-moi, où est la tour Eiffel? Lucas: They reply: 'C'est tout près. Il faut tourner à droite et vous y êtes.' Luna: C'est tout près. Il faut tourner à droite et vous y êtes. So it's close, turn right and I'm there. Lucas: Exactly. Now you try asking me for a different place. How about 'Où est la poste?' Luna: Où est la poste? Lucas: I answer: 'C'est assez loin. Il faut tourner à gauche et puis c'est à droite.' Luna: C'est assez loin. Il faut tourner à gauche et puis c'est à droite. So I turn left first, then it's on the right. Lucas: Perfect. And if you're not sure about the distance, just ask 'C'est loin d'ici?' Luna: C'est loin d'ici? Lucas: And they'll tell you 'Oui, c'est assez loin' or 'Non, c'est tout près.' Luna: That's so useful. I feel like I could actually find my way around now. Lucas: That's the goal. Let's do one more quick recap. Can you repeat all the phrases we learned today? Luna: Sure. Où est la gare? — Where is the train station. C'est loin d'ici? — Is it far from here. Il faut tourner à gauche — You need to turn left. C'est à droite — It's on the right. Oui, c'est tout près — Yes, it's very close. Non, c'est assez loin — No, it's quite far. Lucas: Wow, you nailed it. And remember, if you want to support us, you know where to find us. Practice these phrases and you'll be navigating like a pro. Keep up the great work with Fexingo. Luna: Thanks Lucas. This was really helpful. À bientôt! Lucas: À bientôt! See you next time for more French fun.
