Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: This is Patrick Mammelli from Pestilence and you're listening and
- 0:03Speaker 1: watching Heavy mag yautiful.
- 0:06Speaker 2: Patrick, thanks for joining us today.
- 0:09Speaker 1: Yeah, man, it's great to be here, you know, it's
- 0:12Speaker 1: it's a it's a dream come true talking to people
- 0:16Speaker 1: from Australia because we've never been there before, so this
- 0:18Speaker 1: is going to be our first time and it's you know,
- 0:21Speaker 1: we're pretty excited about it. Hello.
- 0:24Speaker 2: As you mentioned by Pestilence, we'll hit this country for
- 0:27Speaker 2: your first avatur of Australia studying November sixth Brisbane and
- 0:31Speaker 2: gone through Sydney, Canberra and Adelaide before finishing in Melbourne
- 0:34Speaker 2: and November tenth. So you say it is your first
- 0:37Speaker 2: trip overy bro, So why neglect this for so long?
- 0:41Speaker 1: Well, it has nothing to do with neglecting. We wanted
- 0:44Speaker 1: to come over many times before, but for some reason
- 0:48Speaker 1: it never happened. It always boils down to money. It
- 0:51Speaker 1: always boils down to problems with either visa you know,
- 0:58Speaker 1: or problems with the plane tick kids that are they're
- 1:01Speaker 1: too expensive. And then it's very difficult to find promoters
- 1:05Speaker 1: and and and and local promoters to uh you know,
- 1:08Speaker 1: be a part of this. And well it finally is
- 1:11Speaker 1: happening now. So I'm very grateful to Dave Hailey who
- 1:16Speaker 1: also played on Obsidio my album, and uh, you know,
- 1:20Speaker 1: we're still in touch and I knew he was very
- 1:23Speaker 1: grateful to Dave Haley forgetting us over there finally, so
- 1:26Speaker 1: very happy with the result.
- 1:30Speaker 2: So when do you come on somewhere like Australia for
- 1:32Speaker 2: the first time? Do you do you have been a
- 1:33Speaker 2: research or what do you expect? Like you ask people
- 1:36Speaker 2: what's going to happen and stuff for that or you
- 1:37Speaker 2: rather just come in blind and there it goes.
- 1:41Speaker 1: Well. I think I think I'll like to come on
- 1:43Speaker 1: in blind because you know when when when when you
- 1:46Speaker 1: ask somebody maybe that is Australian and then they're going
- 1:49Speaker 1: to say, oh, we're the best fans and this and that.
- 1:52Speaker 1: You know, I just want to experience myself and see
- 1:54Speaker 1: what's up. Let me see if they can top the
- 1:57Speaker 1: South American fans mhm.
- 2:01Speaker 2: And so what do you what are you what are
- 2:04Speaker 2: you expecting from Australian Crawds.
- 2:07Speaker 1: Well, you know, I hope to be that they can
- 2:09Speaker 1: live up to uh to to our expectations. But I
- 2:13Speaker 1: think they will because they're going to be served a
- 2:17Speaker 1: number of classic songs, uh, you know, and this is
- 2:19Speaker 1: going to be the first time that we're performing live
- 2:22Speaker 1: in in Australia, so the reaction should be mildly or
- 2:27Speaker 1: extremely well, I think on the flip side of.
- 2:31Speaker 2: That, Brian, we don't really know what to expect from
- 2:33Speaker 2: you guys run a stereotypical pestilence live show.
- 2:37Speaker 1: Well, we are more more of a of a musical
- 2:43Speaker 1: band than I guess a band that has very much
- 2:50Speaker 1: show value. So we we we have more interest in
- 2:55Speaker 1: delivering the music on a high level, uh, than than
- 2:59Speaker 1: using fire blood and all this other bullshit. You know.
- 3:04Speaker 1: So we are actually a band that loves to perform
- 3:07Speaker 1: live and we feed off the energy of the crowd.
- 3:12Speaker 1: So if the crowd is tame, it might be that
- 3:15Speaker 1: we get even more brutal. So you don't you just don't.
- 3:19Speaker 2: Know, and you've got a bremulem and alarm and sportsmke
- 3:24Speaker 2: did do you know much about them?
- 3:26Speaker 1: Well? Of course, I mean it's like when when we
- 3:31Speaker 1: heard that that they were opening up for us, you know,
- 3:34Speaker 1: we think it's a it's a huge honor because they're
- 3:37Speaker 1: well known bands themselves, so and they've been around for
- 3:41Speaker 1: the longest time as well.
- 3:42Speaker 2: Right, Oh, then you're also playing at a broth and
- 3:48Speaker 2: Fury festival with Fear Factory, North Lying Diaries, Murder Bodyja
- 3:52Speaker 2: Haron's Hell, a heap of others on November night. It's
- 3:54Speaker 2: like that sounds like a really good festival.
- 3:58Speaker 1: Yeah that, I mean, that sounds really safe, you know,
- 4:00Speaker 1: And I mean I do love to play festivals and
- 4:03Speaker 1: get to see some of the other bands as well,
- 4:05Speaker 1: because most of the time when we when we play,
- 4:07Speaker 1: we're so focused on our own show that you know,
- 4:12Speaker 1: we don't get to see the rest of the rest
- 4:14Speaker 1: of the band. So now we do get to see
- 4:18Speaker 1: it and uh and get a tasture of the crowd
- 4:21Speaker 1: and the way they react to the music. You know,
- 4:24Speaker 1: it's always good to have more good music.
- 4:28Speaker 2: Dams. Right now, you're the only remaining original member from
- 4:32Speaker 2: when Pestol has started in nineteen ninety six. Man, So
- 4:35Speaker 2: what was the musical climate like back then that gave
- 4:37Speaker 2: birth to the band and where did it fit in initially?
- 4:42Speaker 1: I think, yeah, we started in eighty in eighty six,
- 4:48Speaker 1: you know, just just done a few demos and but
- 4:51Speaker 1: it's it's always been my baby, you know. I don't
- 4:54Speaker 1: really care with who I play. As long as I
- 4:57Speaker 1: have a drummer, a bass player and a second our player,
- 5:00Speaker 1: I can play with anybody as long as they they
- 5:04Speaker 1: have an interesting pestile once and and and and I
- 5:07Speaker 1: guess get get what I'm trying to trying to do
- 5:12Speaker 1: with my music. The thing is is that you know,
- 5:17Speaker 1: Pestles is not a cover band. We've never really done
- 5:20Speaker 1: stuff like that. Of course, we've played a Slayer song
- 5:24Speaker 1: here and there, but I've always tried to be as
- 5:27Speaker 1: original as possible. So the only thing for me is
- 5:33Speaker 1: finding people that that you know, that understand my music
- 5:37Speaker 1: and are capable of playing my music, because it's pretty intricate.
- 5:43Speaker 1: It's it's sometimes it's it sounds easy, but it's very
- 5:46Speaker 1: difficult music. So finding the right people that have also
- 5:51Speaker 1: the same enthusiasm and and their personality, uh, don't clash.
- 5:58Speaker 1: You know, you're good to go.
- 6:01Speaker 2: When you started back in ninety six, bright like you're
- 6:03Speaker 2: more of a thresh metal band. So how did that
- 6:06Speaker 2: change into the more death sort of style that you
- 6:08Speaker 2: got now?
- 6:10Speaker 1: Well, the thing is is that you know every band,
- 6:12Speaker 1: every person when they start, you know, even we go
- 6:16Speaker 1: to like a conservatory or music school everybody's looking to
- 6:20Speaker 1: find their own identity. And as we were listening to
- 6:25Speaker 1: you know, bands like Slayer, Creator, Uh, you know back
- 6:29Speaker 1: in the days, Infernal Majesty and all these bands, they
- 6:32Speaker 1: were more thrashy. So obviously obviously what you listen to
- 6:37Speaker 1: is what you become. And I found I found this
- 6:41Speaker 1: out at a very young age, is to never listen
- 6:45Speaker 1: to the music that you're trying to do yourself, because
- 6:48Speaker 1: I'm like a sponge, so I like to analyze music
- 6:51Speaker 1: and and and and I get subconsciously you take over
- 6:55Speaker 1: some of the trade at a younger age. It came
- 6:59Speaker 1: out with that. See, we wanted to be the European
- 7:01Speaker 1: answer to to to Death, and so we came up
- 7:04Speaker 1: with Consuming Impulse. By the time we've done Testimony of
- 7:08Speaker 1: the Ancients, I stopped listening to metal in general because,
- 7:12Speaker 1: like I said, I don't want to sound like any
- 7:14Speaker 1: other band. So now when you put it on a
- 7:16Speaker 1: Pestonce album, even if it has a different style you know, musically,
- 7:22Speaker 1: and it sounds different, you still can hear its pestilence,
- 7:25Speaker 1: and that's what I aim for.
- 7:28Speaker 2: Over the years, has disbanded a couple of times, but
- 7:31Speaker 2: it keeps coming back. So what is it for you personally?
- 7:34Speaker 2: It keeps you coming back to pestilence.
- 7:37Speaker 1: Well, it's I don't go back to pestles. I am pestilents,
- 7:42Speaker 1: so so I can never I can never go away
- 7:45Speaker 1: from myself as a person. The times that I've that
- 7:50Speaker 1: I've stopped playing music is when I was totally fed
- 7:53Speaker 1: up with the music industry, coming to realize that it's
- 7:58Speaker 1: all a political gain, especially like who knows who and
- 8:03Speaker 1: who can kiss somebody's ass, you know. And I've never
- 8:06Speaker 1: been a person like this. I've always done my own
- 8:08Speaker 1: own little thing, living in my own little world. So
- 8:13Speaker 1: you know, after a hiatus of fifteen or twenty years,
- 8:18Speaker 1: the musician comes back, you know. And then I just
- 8:22Speaker 1: felt that that I was not done. I was not
- 8:26Speaker 1: done yet with my creativity in creating good music. You know.
- 8:32Speaker 1: The proof will be the new album Portals. This will
- 8:37Speaker 1: be a giant leap forward. And I'd like to see
- 8:42Speaker 1: the reactions of the established death metal bands now what
- 8:46Speaker 1: they're going to think about this, because this is a
- 8:49Speaker 1: new high standard. There would be more about.
- 8:52Speaker 2: Portals, might like when's it looking at coming out?
- 8:56Speaker 1: We're looking at March next year, March or April because
- 9:03Speaker 1: the music is still evolving. I have I have thirteen
- 9:06Speaker 1: songs that have been composed, but I like to leave
- 9:11Speaker 1: room for change, changes stills. Nothing is set in stone,
- 9:16Speaker 1: so when I feel a part needs something different, you
- 9:20Speaker 1: know it'll get something different. So it'll be an ongoing
- 9:23Speaker 1: process until it's ready I think March or April.
- 9:27Speaker 2: Yes, all right, Patrick, Well, thanks very much for your time, broh.
- 9:31Speaker 2: It's been a pleasure speaking with you. Pestilence are in
- 9:33Speaker 2: Austraia from November sixth, so I'm ever they're going to
- 9:37Speaker 2: be brutal shows.
- 9:38Speaker 1: Get along in support definitely. Thank you so much for
- 9:42Speaker 1: the interest and hope hopefully I get to see you
- 9:45Speaker 1: at one of the shows and we can shake. Would
- 9:49Speaker 1: be awesome, man, right, see that that's take care
