- 0:02Speaker 1: This is the Patriots Training Camp Cast.
- 0:09Speaker 2: The Patriots Training Camp Cast is your source for all
- 0:11Speaker 2: the news from Patriots Training Camp.
- 0:13Speaker 1: Well, I do still watch the news.
- 0:15Speaker 3: Practice is over, but the writers of Patriots dot com
- 0:18Speaker 3: have you covered?
- 0:19Speaker 1: What did I miss yesterday?
- 0:20Speaker 3: Now here to review today's practice the writers of Patriots
- 0:23Speaker 3: dot com.
- 0:24Speaker 1: All right, welcome into another edition of the Patriots Training
- 0:27Speaker 1: Camp Cast. I'm Mike do So, joined by Evan Lazar
- 0:29Speaker 1: and Paul Perrillo. And guys, we just got off the
- 0:32Speaker 1: field from the fourth practice the Patriots have had this summer.
- 0:34Speaker 1: We made a day off yesterday, and guys, it kind
- 0:37Speaker 1: of felt a little bit signs of life from the offense.
- 0:39Speaker 1: I know it's been a little bit bumpy here early on,
- 0:40Speaker 1: but Paul, I felt like the offense it made some
- 0:43Speaker 1: place today. It wasn't overwhelming, but there were some moments. Yeah.
- 0:45Speaker 3: I thought the first time we got a chance to
- 0:47Speaker 3: see some one on one work, and I thought the
- 0:48Speaker 3: receivers did a pretty good job of consistently creating some separation.
- 0:52Speaker 3: I thought Jalen Rager, Kayshaon Boody, a Javon Baker, I
- 0:57Speaker 3: thought those guys were consistently getting open and making some
- 1:00Speaker 3: catches in that setting. I think when it got to
- 1:02Speaker 3: seven on seven and eleven on eleven, it was a
- 1:04Speaker 3: little bit more on even the way we've kind of
- 1:06Speaker 3: seen the first three days. But yeah, signs of life,
- 1:09Speaker 3: I would I would agree.
- 1:09Speaker 1: Yeah, I talk about Javon Baker because I know he's
- 1:12Speaker 1: standing out to you today. Yeah.
- 1:13Speaker 2: I thought he was open the entire practice, and I
- 1:15Speaker 2: was actually watching him on a couple of the eleven
- 1:17Speaker 2: on eleven reps away from the ball when he wasn't
- 1:19Speaker 2: being targeted, and I thought he was giving defenders problems.
- 1:22Speaker 2: And we've all said it and I feel like it
- 1:25Speaker 2: holds true from what we thought in the draft. Just
- 1:27Speaker 2: an explosive athlete kind of is a little bit twitchier,
- 1:30Speaker 2: moves a little bit faster than some of the other
- 1:32Speaker 2: guys that have been out there. Nothing against Jalen Polk,
- 1:35Speaker 2: who's been steady and has been able to eat up
- 1:38Speaker 2: a little bit of that underneath coverage at times. But
- 1:40Speaker 2: when you look for that big play down the field,
- 1:42Speaker 2: we saw it yesterday from Joe Milton. Today a crossing
- 1:45Speaker 2: route from Drake May, you just start to see Javon
- 1:48Speaker 2: Baker pop a little bit here, and I would say,
- 1:51Speaker 2: you know, after the thumb injury in the spring, now
- 1:54Speaker 2: we're getting to see him come on a little bit stronger,
- 1:56Speaker 2: and this is kind of what we saw at the
- 1:58Speaker 2: beginning of the spring until he started getting limited by
- 2:01Speaker 2: that injury. So I'm encouraged.
- 2:03Speaker 1: So let's go through some housekeeping stuff. Just you know,
- 2:05Speaker 1: Christian Barmore not spotted, wasn't active last couple of days.
- 2:08Speaker 1: We had heard reports that he was sick. He came
- 2:09Speaker 1: out last practice halfway through and Watch didn't even see
- 2:12Speaker 1: him today. Marte Mapu though he did still have that
- 2:15Speaker 1: same plan, came out halfway through watch practice, wasn't a participant.
- 2:20Speaker 1: Sean Wade wearing a red jersey. We did see Antonio
- 2:23Speaker 1: Gibson now officially involved in practice, so officially off the
- 2:27Speaker 1: NFI list. But guys, I go back to Barmore. I'm
- 2:29Speaker 1: just you know, after that big contract this offseason, we
- 2:31Speaker 1: know we're counting on him. Paul, I'm just a little
- 2:33Speaker 1: disappointed not seeing him out there. Hopefully it's nothing major.
- 2:35Speaker 3: Yeah, I mean, it's hard to necessarily say I'm concerned
- 2:39Speaker 3: or not concerned because you just don't really know exactly
- 2:42Speaker 3: what's keeping him off. You hear illness and you're like, oh, okay,
- 2:44Speaker 3: well you know he's not feeling great. Well, you know,
- 2:48Speaker 3: not that I'm comparing the two, but last year Calvin
- 2:50Speaker 3: Anderson was on the NFI list with an illness that
- 2:52Speaker 3: no one knew anything about at the time, and it
- 2:54Speaker 3: turned out to be quite serious. So I don't want
- 2:57Speaker 3: to just make nothing of it, but without knowing, it's
- 2:59Speaker 3: hard to to necessarily get in a panic.
- 3:02Speaker 2: Yeah, just on a good news because that's kind of
- 3:04Speaker 2: a downer. We have Antonio Gibson back in practice, and
- 3:07Speaker 2: we've talked a ton about on the show running back
- 3:10Speaker 2: depth and a lack thereof behind Ramandra Stevenson and Antonio Gibson.
- 3:13Speaker 2: So definitely a sea legs practice for him. Felt like
- 3:17Speaker 2: he was just getting his feet wet in practice. But
- 3:19Speaker 2: it was good to see him back out there. He
- 3:21Speaker 2: doesn't look any worse for the warry, so it looks
- 3:24Speaker 2: like he's gonna be one hundred percent.
- 3:25Speaker 3: Yeah, and more good news injury wise. We saw Kendrick
- 3:29Speaker 3: Bourne out there in his uniform, you know, just his
- 3:33Speaker 3: normal sort of exuberant self. He was bouncing around having
- 3:35Speaker 3: all kinds of fun. Still a ways away, more than
- 3:39Speaker 3: likely from coming off pup, but seeing him out there
- 3:42Speaker 3: getting ready with the pre practice warm up with the
- 3:44Speaker 3: rest of his teammates, I would say that he's probably
- 3:47Speaker 3: getting to the point where he can see the light
- 3:50Speaker 3: at the end of the tunnel.
- 3:50Speaker 1: Now along the offensive line, we did see the same
- 3:52Speaker 1: combination that we saw last practice, where we have Kaden
- 3:55Speaker 1: Wallace the rookie on the left side, and over on
- 3:57Speaker 1: the right side chooks of Corra four. So they've kind
- 3:59Speaker 1: of flopped things. They've stayed there for a couple practices.
- 4:01Speaker 1: We know the pads are going to come on tomorrow,
- 4:03Speaker 1: so kind of hoping that maybe this is something that
- 4:05Speaker 1: they feel like they can hang their hat on here
- 4:07Speaker 1: early in practice and go with this unit.
- 4:09Speaker 3: Yeah, I think that would be a good development. And
- 4:11Speaker 3: I did think, and you know, Evan charts all this stuff.
- 4:14Speaker 3: I thought there were more plays today that weren't as
- 4:17Speaker 3: disrupted by the pass rush as we've seen the first
- 4:19Speaker 3: three days. So I think there was some positive signs there.
- 4:22Speaker 3: And I probably think it's not a coincidence that you
- 4:25Speaker 3: had the same five and maybe the cohesion was a
- 4:27Speaker 3: little bit stronger.
- 4:28Speaker 2: Yeah, I'm one hundred percent with you, Paul I don't
- 4:31Speaker 2: necessarily agree with the combination, but that's not my job
- 4:34Speaker 2: to tell them which combination to go with, So I
- 4:37Speaker 2: don't necessarily agree with the combination. I probably would have
- 4:39Speaker 2: the tackles flipped. But the most important thing is having
- 4:42Speaker 2: the same five guys out there. That's definitely the most
- 4:44Speaker 2: important thing. And go back to an old scarnekieism, see
- 4:47Speaker 2: it through the same set of eyes. And in order
- 4:49Speaker 2: to build that kind of continuity that all five guys
- 4:52Speaker 2: are on one string and they're all pulling the rope
- 4:54Speaker 2: at the same time, you have to start repping it
- 4:56Speaker 2: time and time and time again. So two days in
- 4:59Speaker 2: a row now, and then we get into the pads tomorrow,
- 5:01Speaker 2: hopefully it's the same five and we start to really
- 5:04Speaker 2: build something there. And to Paul's point, I charted three
- 5:06Speaker 2: pressures in fifteen reps during team drills. The other day
- 5:10Speaker 2: it was six and fifteen, so twice as many. And
- 5:14Speaker 2: then granted it's we're using our eyes and judging, and
- 5:17Speaker 2: I don't have film to watch it back or anything
- 5:19Speaker 2: like that, so that's all live. But I thought that
- 5:21Speaker 2: there were some mishaps, but for the most part it
- 5:24Speaker 2: was much cleaner.
- 5:25Speaker 1: One more point for me to talk about guys is
- 5:27Speaker 1: just we mentioned a few of the receivers that have been,
- 5:29Speaker 1: you know, just getting open, making catches. You mentioned Baker
- 5:31Speaker 1: had a good day again. Jalen Pole continues to just
- 5:33Speaker 1: be targeted involved get some catches. I mean he's probably
- 5:36Speaker 1: been I'd say, I mean, maybe you have it having
- 5:38Speaker 1: the most targeted guy so far. But the guy I
- 5:40Speaker 1: just want to talk about not really be getting much
- 5:43Speaker 1: mentioned as Austin Hooper second tight end. You know, we've
- 5:45Speaker 1: seen this for a few years now. They've had Hunter Henry,
- 5:47Speaker 1: who's a reliable kind of guy. We've seen Mike Kasiki,
- 5:50Speaker 1: We've seen John Hu Smith never really been able to
- 5:52Speaker 1: find a complimentary second guy. And I don't want to
- 5:54Speaker 1: buy the foolst goal because let's face it, we saw
- 5:56Speaker 1: some place from John hu and Kasiki and training camp
- 5:58Speaker 1: as well. But hey, let's just call it out. Nice
- 6:01Speaker 1: day for Austin Hooper.
- 6:01Speaker 3: I thought, yeah, I thought he was active throughout. I
- 6:03Speaker 3: thought one of the best plays probably that I can
- 6:06Speaker 3: remember in all four days was a scene route to
- 6:09Speaker 3: him in one of the team periods today. Just looked
- 6:13Speaker 3: really smooth running down. There was another ball that even
- 6:16Speaker 3: caught that was not anything that you would necessarily want
- 6:19Speaker 3: to see in a game. It's a play that was
- 6:21Speaker 3: kind of blown up, but it was about forty forty
- 6:23Speaker 3: five yards downfield, tracking a ball, kind of high pointing.
- 6:26Speaker 3: It really athletic play for a tight end that far downfield.
- 6:29Speaker 3: So I do think you're right. You know, we said
- 6:32Speaker 3: a lot of this stuff about John Ui Smith a
- 6:33Speaker 3: couple of years ago. We said a lot of it
- 6:35Speaker 3: last year about Mike Kasiki.
- 6:37Speaker 2: Definitely Kiki.
- 6:38Speaker 3: Hopefully we're talking about it in a different way with
- 6:40Speaker 3: Austin Hooper.
- 6:40Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 6:41Speaker 2: The hope is that he's a little bit of a
- 6:42Speaker 2: better blocker than Kasiki has been throughout his entire career,
- 6:46Speaker 2: and he's got a lot of familiarity in this scheme
- 6:48Speaker 2: with Alex van Pelt, so we started to talk about
- 6:51Speaker 2: guys learning and having a little bit of an adjustment
- 6:53Speaker 2: or in a learning curve. He's one of the guys
- 6:56Speaker 2: like Jacoby Brissett that probably has no problem stepping right
- 6:59Speaker 2: back to this offense. And you see that that he's
- 7:02Speaker 2: in the right places and it's in rhythm, and I
- 7:04Speaker 2: agree with Paul, the right over the middle of the
- 7:06Speaker 2: field off play action was the cleanest play that we've
- 7:09Speaker 2: seen the offense make probably in four days.
- 7:11Speaker 1: Yeah, so I don't know anything I missed you, guys.
- 7:13Speaker 1: I mean I do want to say a new signing
- 7:15Speaker 1: announced this morning to Ziah Brunson from the UFL, so
- 7:18Speaker 1: adding some defensive line depth. We think hopefully that doesn't
- 7:21Speaker 1: say anything about Christian Barmore's health. But otherwise, the pads
- 7:24Speaker 1: are due to come on tomorrow. I anticipate it'll be
- 7:26Speaker 1: an active week. We're expecting Wednesday will be the off day,
- 7:29Speaker 1: so we're thinking two more days of practice, off day
- 7:31Speaker 1: and then three more straight days of practice. So it's
- 7:34Speaker 1: not quite real football yet, guys. But the pads coming
- 7:37Speaker 1: on anything specifically you're kind of looking forward to tomorrow.
- 7:40Speaker 3: For me, the number one thing I'm looking for isn't
- 7:43Speaker 3: necessarily anything individual. It's how Mayo handles the pads. Yeah,
- 7:46Speaker 3: you know, is it going to be similar so the
- 7:48Speaker 3: way Bill did, because certainly toward the end there was
- 7:51Speaker 3: very little contact at Patriots practices. I'll be curious to
- 7:54Speaker 3: see how Girod handles it.
- 7:55Speaker 2: Yeah. I will obviously be looking on the offensive line
- 7:57Speaker 2: and defensive line now more than we did before, and
- 8:00Speaker 2: I'll have the trench reports and all that kind of
- 8:02Speaker 2: stuff that I love doing. But with the receivers, I
- 8:05Speaker 2: am curious to see how some of these guys that
- 8:08Speaker 2: have flashed when we get to the pads, are they
- 8:11Speaker 2: still productive? Are they still flashing? Jalen Rager is a
- 8:14Speaker 2: guy that I think has been involved and has been active,
- 8:17Speaker 2: but he tends to be a player throughout his career.
- 8:19Speaker 2: Looks great in the spring, looks great in these non
- 8:22Speaker 2: padded practices, and the pads come on and it's a
- 8:24Speaker 2: totally different ballgame. And we were just talking to Taekwon
- 8:27Speaker 2: Thornton after practice who said that he put on about
- 8:29Speaker 2: seven eight pounds of muscle this offseason. He's trying to
- 8:32Speaker 2: bulk up those two speed receivers. How do they look
- 8:35Speaker 2: once the pads come on and the corners can get
- 8:37Speaker 2: their hands on them and things like that. That's going
- 8:39Speaker 2: to decide that battle at the back end of the
- 8:43Speaker 2: depth chart. Not these practices. It's going to be the
- 8:45Speaker 2: ones in the deep summer, you know, padded ones.
- 8:49Speaker 1: Well, pads tomorrow, preseason next week. It's coming fast and
- 8:52Speaker 1: furious now, folks, But be sure to stick with us.
- 8:54Speaker 1: We got you covered and we'll be back tomorrow with
- 8:56Speaker 1: another training camp. Training, but the Patriots Training Camp post
