- INTRO: The 1916 Mesabi Iron Range Strike: How Minnesota Miners Fought U.S. Steel In less than twenty-five years, northern Minnesota’s Mesabi Iron Range went from a quiet wilderness to the iron-pumping heart of industrial America. More than forty distinct immigrant groups arrived across the Range. Finns, Croatians, Italians, Slovenes, and Montenegrins, came to build a life in the red dirt. Together, these families built vibrant, multi-ethnic towns, but U.S. Steel’s Oliver Mining Company held a total monopoly. The corporation controlled their wages, rented them their homes, and squeezed their pay envelopes dry. By the spring of 1916, the air across the Range was heavy with red iron dust and relentless strain. Systemic pay deductions, extortionate living costs, and dangerous conditions pushed thousands of working families to the absolute brink. ACT I: The Spark of 1916: Joe Greene and the Mesabi Mine Walkout Underground miners drill into heavy ore expecting contract rates between $2.80 and $3.25 a day. Then the shift ends, and the real math begins. Company bosses deduct mandatory fees for blasting powder, caps, and fuses directly from each pay envelope. Take-home pay plummets below two dollars a day. Range store owners charge fifty to one hundred percent more for basic food than grocers in the Twin Cities. Landlords jack up rent by twenty percent. According to local oral histories, shift workers must even offer personal cash bribes to mine bosses just to secure working mine faces. The boiling point arrives on May 31, 1916. Joe Greene opens his bi-weekly pay envelope at the Alpena Mine. The numbers do not match his recorded footage. Greene curses, and flings his heavy steel pick against the granite floor. He does not wait for union permission. By June 2, Greene marches south to the St. James Mine in Aurora. Word spreads from shaft to shaft like a wildfire across dry brush. By June 15, about 1,500 striking workers pack into the Finnish Socialist Hall in Virginia. Speeches echo off the walls in English, Croatian, Italian, Finnish, and Slovene. Interpreters translate strategy in real time across more than forty nationality groups. Together, they draft their demands. They want an eight-hour day. They demand the total end of the contract system. They set flat wages at $2.75 for surface work, $3.00 for dry underground shifts, and $3.50 for wet shafts. Industrial Workers of the World organizers Carlo Tresca and Sam Scarlett arrive in Virginia days later. A local walkout has turned into an industrial war. ACT II: Armed Guards and Red Dust: Escalation on the Mesabi Range Sheriff John Meining builds a force of more than one thousand newly deputized men, while the mining companies hire armed guards to protect their property. Minnesota Governor, J.A.A. Burnquist, issues executive orders commanding local officers to break up pickets and clear access to the pit gates. Deputies outlaw gatherings of more than three miners on any public street corner or sidewalk. Striking families respond to the lockdown, meeting on dirt roads outside town. Picketers line up at 3:30 in the morning along narrow paths, scattering iron carpet tacks across the ruts to blow out the tires of company guard vehicles. Immigrant-owned co-op grocers extend lines of store credit to keep families fed, but company-backed local banks quickly move to freeze the shopkeepers' accounts. The tension turns lethal on June 22, outside the Alpena Mine in Virginia. During a clash with mining-company guards, Croatian miner John Alar is shot and killed. State police records document that during the chaotic retreat, Lucija Rosandich, a Croatian miner’s wife, steps onto her front porch, levels a Winchester rifle at Oliver Police Chief David Foley, and pulls the trigger. Violence erupts again on July 3, at the Chicago Location in Biwabik. Special deputies push their way into the home of Montenegrin miner Philip Masonovich to arrest him. His wife, Milica, fights back at the doorway. Shots shatter the small wooden house. Deputy Sheriff James Myron and Finnish soda distributor Tomi Ladvalla collapse dead on the floor. On July 4, Sheriff Meining arrests strike leaders Carlo Tresca and Sam Scarlett in Duluth. Authorities charge them with inciting murder, even though both men were miles away in Virginia when the Biwabik shooting occurred. ACT III: The Battle of the Location Lines: Women and Sabotage on the Mesabi Range With their primary male leaders locked inside Duluth jail cells, the women of the Mesabi Range step directly onto the frontlines. On July 11, 26 year-old Industrial Workers of the World organizer, Elizabeth Gurley Flynn, arrives in Minnesota. Known across the country as "The Rebel Girl," Flynn organizes community soup kitchens, raises defense funds, and rallies women into disciplined picket brigades. Tactics change instantly on the ground. Immigrant mothers wheel baby carriages packed with infants directly into mine entrance gates, using their children as physical human shields to block deputy charges. Picketers throw red pepper and fine river sand into the eyes of company guards. They pelt strikebreakers with rotten eggs and launch heavy rocks at iron ore cars. Direct physical sabotage breaks out along the rail lines. On July 21, police arrest Hulda Jamback near Aurora. Officers catch the Finnish miner’s wife slicing air hoses on fifty ore cars in the railyard. During another picket line clash outside the Alpena Mine, officers arrest Elisa Ercoli, who bites a deputy's hand to break his grip and escape. Federal intervention fails to break the stalemate. On July 26, United States Department of Labor mediators Hywel Davies and W.R. Fairley arrive on the Range, but mining executives flatly refuse to meet with union delegates. By August, sympathy strikes spread to the Section 30 Mine on the Vermilion Range and open pits across the Cuyuna Range. The Mesabi walkout had reached as many as 8,000 miners at its peak. ACT IV: The 1916 Mesabi Strike Aftermath: Blacklists and Duluth Courtroom Deals Cool September winds sweep across the open pits as the summer turns to autumn. On September 17, the Central Strike Committee meets in Virginia under heavy pressure. Local merchants close out store credit. Families face immediate eviction from company land. Union defense funds are entirely exhausted. Seeing no path to immediate victory, the committee votes to call off the strike. Miners walk back through the gates without a signed contract. Company managers immediately implement blacklists, turning away hundreds of workers, who stood on the picket lines. Meanwhile, Carlo Tresca, Sam Scarlett, and their fellow organizers remain trapped behind iron bars in the Duluth jail, facing life sentences for murder. Backroom negotiations replace street battles as winter sets in. According to court records, defense attorney Ernest Korsgren and IWW leader Big Bill Haywood work out a quiet legal deal with the state prosecutors on December 15. Prosecutors drop all murder charges against Tresca and the top union organizers. In exchange, three Montenegrin miners enter minor guilty pleas for their involvement in the Biwabik shooting. The legal siege ends, but the wounds across the Mesabi Range remain wide open. CONCLUSION: The Legacy of the 1916 Mesabi Strike: Victory in the Red Dust The miners lost their official union fight in September, but their courage forced a quiet revolution. Corporate executives realized that desperate families would always fight for human dignity. By late fall, Oliver Iron Mining granted the eight-hour workday and bumped wages up by fifteen percent. On December 15, company notices announced an additional ten percent pay raise across the entire Range. Corrupt boss bribes were outlawed. Mining companies finally reformed the contract system. Rates could no longer be slashed mid-month, and wages had to rise when harsh ground slowed down production. Miners now received monthly itemized pay statements, ending the corrupt boss-estimation system that drove Joe Greene to throw down his pick. The rigged contract system was broken. Mining companies spent millions over the following decades on modern parks, public halls, and grand schools to win back their communities. Yet the true victory belongs to the people. In Virginia’s Calvary Cemetery, Joe Greene’s quiet grave rests near John Alar’s. Their sacrifice proved that ordinary working people, standing shoulder to shoulder, hold the power to shape their own destiny.
