Transcript
- 0:10Speaker 1: Hello everyone, and welcome into this edition of the check
- 0:13Speaker 1: O Daily. It's Andrew de Checko of Inside the Birds
- 0:16Speaker 1: dot Com and on Wednesday, the Eagles return to the
- 0:20Speaker 1: practice field for the first time coming off their mini
- 0:23Speaker 1: bye week. But before we get to the injury reports
- 0:26Speaker 1: for the Eagles and the Vikings to start the week,
- 0:29Speaker 1: it's important for me to convey some of the messaging
- 0:33Speaker 1: or my sense and takeaways from the first locker room
- 0:37Speaker 1: availability of the week, and that is that it was upbeat.
- 0:42Speaker 1: Players were banding together. They all sort of conveyed the
- 0:46Speaker 1: same messaging that they know what they need to do
- 0:50Speaker 1: to head things in the right direction, and that all
- 0:52Speaker 1: stems from Nick Sirianni's leadership. And we'll get to that
- 0:55Speaker 1: in the moment. But there's no finger pointing, there's no
- 0:58Speaker 1: assigning blame. There's just players and coaches looking for solutions,
- 1:04Speaker 1: which if you're an Eagles fan, that has to be
- 1:06Speaker 1: encouraging that no one's sort of going their own way.
- 1:09Speaker 1: They're really trying to get this thing back on track.
- 1:14Speaker 1: And I think that sometimes for different teams, maybe different organizations,
- 1:20Speaker 1: losing two games that might elicit some questions. But the
- 1:24Speaker 1: sense that I get is a team that that's really
- 1:28Speaker 1: trying to come together and find those solutions. So we'll
- 1:34Speaker 1: get into the injury reports, and there's a lot of
- 1:38Speaker 1: key names on it, and I know that a lot
- 1:40Speaker 1: of folks were wondering what the status was going to
- 1:44Speaker 1: be on some of the players. Remember in the Thursday
- 1:46Speaker 1: night game, quinya On Mitchell exited with the hamstring injury,
- 1:49Speaker 1: didn't return. Jalen Calarr didn't play in the game at all.
- 1:52Speaker 1: He was close with the heel injury, but he ultimately
- 1:56Speaker 1: wasn't able to go. Landon Dickerson didn't play. Grant Kalkatara
- 1:59Speaker 1: didn't play, so for the Eagles Wednesday injury report not
- 2:03Speaker 1: practicing tight end Grant cockataire with the oblique. Now, if
- 2:07Speaker 1: you remember, Will Shipley suffered the same injury off the
- 2:11Speaker 1: opener and missed the next two games. So it's early,
- 2:15Speaker 1: but it would appear that Grant Cockatear is trending towards
- 2:19Speaker 1: not being available Sunday. We'll have to wait and see
- 2:21Speaker 1: how that all progresses. But Grant was spotted working on
- 2:25Speaker 1: a far field doing some conditioning. I asked him today
- 2:30Speaker 1: how he's feeling. He said he's feeling better. Limited today,
- 2:33Speaker 1: guard Landon Dickerson with the ankle. That's going to be
- 2:38Speaker 1: one to keep an eye on. If he's not able
- 2:39Speaker 1: to go, that would mean that Brett Toath would get
- 2:42Speaker 1: another start at left guard. Cornerback Quinyon Mitchell with the hamstring.
- 2:48Speaker 1: That was surprising to me because he was in the
- 2:51Speaker 1: blue tent on Thursday night for a long time, an
- 2:55Speaker 1: extended period of time, I would say, based off of
- 2:57Speaker 1: my experience, and he was. He didn't come back into
- 3:01Speaker 1: the game. So a hamstring injury for a corner that's
- 3:05Speaker 1: not usually optimal, and that would tend to lead you to
- 3:08Speaker 1: believe that that could be a little bit of time
- 3:11Speaker 1: before they're able to come back onto the field. But
- 3:13Speaker 1: we get out to the practice field today he's in
- 3:15Speaker 1: the stretch line and when the official injury report was
- 3:18Speaker 1: released later Wednesday afternoon, it was determined that QUENTYA. Mitchell
- 3:23Speaker 1: was limited with the hamstring. Encouraging news there and then
- 3:26Speaker 1: full go for the Eagles today. Linebacker Zach Bond with
- 3:29Speaker 1: the finger, Defensive tackle Jalen Carter with the heel, Defensive
- 3:34Speaker 1: tackle Jordan Davis with the shoulder. Promising news there across
- 3:39Speaker 1: the board for the Eagles and the Minnesota Vikings. Let's
- 3:44Speaker 1: get to that real quick, fully participating Tyler Battie with
- 3:50Speaker 1: the knee, Blake Cashman, they're a linebacker, They're do it
- 3:53Speaker 1: all linebacker. With the hamstring, he was full go. Michael Jurgens,
- 3:58Speaker 1: their center with the hamstring, was full go. And quarterback
- 4:01Speaker 1: Carson Wentz with the shoulder was also full go. Limited
- 4:06Speaker 1: Tyrion Ingram Dawkins with the hip, Donovan Jackson wrist, quarterback
- 4:11Speaker 1: JJ McCarthy ankle, offensive lineman Brian O'Neill with the knee,
- 4:15Speaker 1: and Andrew van Ginkle with the neck. Van Ginkle is
- 4:18Speaker 1: another interesting one because he's been out for a while
- 4:20Speaker 1: now and I'm not quite sure if he'll be ready
- 4:24Speaker 1: to go in time for Sunday, but it seems like
- 4:27Speaker 1: he's working his way back. But if he's able to
- 4:29Speaker 1: somehow make a miracle run and be available, that is
- 4:32Speaker 1: a significant addition for the Minnesota Vikings. So on Jalen Carter,
- 4:40Speaker 1: he mentioned that he feels good and that he's going
- 4:42Speaker 1: to play on Sunday. The big question that we've got
- 4:47Speaker 1: coming out of that game, And remember we were there
- 4:50Speaker 1: last week. It was just Tuesday because it was a
- 4:52Speaker 1: short week, so we didn't get to see any of
- 4:54Speaker 1: the walkthroughs. That's common practice, but we weren't able to
- 4:59Speaker 1: ask Jalen Carter questions about the heel injury and he
- 5:01Speaker 1: said it was during practice a low key came out
- 5:05Speaker 1: of nowhere, started feeling some pain, talked about it, got
- 5:07Speaker 1: it looked at, told me what it was and just
- 5:10Speaker 1: move on. Moved on from there. So he talked about
- 5:14Speaker 1: getting the treatment, working with the trainers, and that it
- 5:17Speaker 1: didn't have anything to do with the MetLife turf that
- 5:21Speaker 1: he was held out because he said, you know, we
- 5:23Speaker 1: have to play there every year, so that didn't factor
- 5:26Speaker 1: in at all. And he did add that he was close,
- 5:30Speaker 1: So I think that that's important to know and if
- 5:34Speaker 1: there's any silver lining here, it's that. And he admitted
- 5:37Speaker 1: as much that the game off was able to, you know,
- 5:41Speaker 1: take a little bit of pressure off the shoulder that's
- 5:43Speaker 1: been lingering for him for a little bit of time.
- 5:49Speaker 1: And we talked to a lot of different players today,
- 5:53Speaker 1: Jehide Campbell and the Kobe Dean. I spoke to running
- 5:58Speaker 1: backs Will Shipley and Tank Bigsby and working on a
- 6:01Speaker 1: story about the kick return game. So there is a
- 6:05Speaker 1: lot to glean from today's locker room session. Thursday, I'll
- 6:08Speaker 1: be talking to cornerback Mac McWilliams for the latest edition
- 6:11Speaker 1: of The Rookie Diary, and we'll get into some other
- 6:13Speaker 1: things as well. And I wanted to get to some
- 6:18Speaker 1: of my talking points from this week because I think
- 6:21Speaker 1: that's really important to kind of set the scene and
- 6:25Speaker 1: the mood and the temperature for this team right now.
- 6:27Speaker 1: Because I know a lot of you listening have a
- 6:29Speaker 1: lot of questions, but I will give you some things
- 6:33Speaker 1: that really resonated with me and that I jotted down
- 6:36Speaker 1: and that I wanted to expand on, and I wrote
- 6:38Speaker 1: about this on Inside the Birds dot Com. But there
- 6:41Speaker 1: won't be any assigning blame. That was the first and
- 6:44Speaker 1: foremost takeaway this week. And that sounds simple enough, but
- 6:49Speaker 1: you'd be surprised. There's organizations out there that aren't as
- 6:53Speaker 1: equipped as the Eagles are to handle losing two games
- 6:56Speaker 1: in a row with that kind of talent. But Nick Siriani,
- 7:01Speaker 1: he mentioned that he's not in the business of a
- 7:03Speaker 1: signing blame and not in this sport. This is what
- 7:08Speaker 1: he said. Not in this sport is it ever on
- 7:10Speaker 1: one person. And we're not in the business of a
- 7:12Speaker 1: signing blame. We're in the business of finding solutions. So
- 7:16Speaker 1: I'm not going to elaborate on that, but it was
- 7:20Speaker 1: a longer quote, but I think that's important. When you
- 7:23Speaker 1: lose a game like the Eagles lost to New York
- 7:25Speaker 1: Giants thirty four to seventeen, and all three phases contributed
- 7:30Speaker 1: to the loss, it would be so easy to point
- 7:33Speaker 1: fingers because the defense has played a big part in
- 7:36Speaker 1: the Eagles getting out to the start that they have.
- 7:38Speaker 1: They've made plays to help them win games. So as
- 7:41Speaker 1: the special teams with the block kick, the block punt
- 7:46Speaker 1: that Cam lat Too had that's Sydney Brown recovered in
- 7:48Speaker 1: Tampa Bay. So it would be very easy for finger
- 7:54Speaker 1: pointing to happen. But Nick Sirianni was admirant about not
- 7:59Speaker 1: a signing blame, trying to find solutions, taking accountability and
- 8:05Speaker 1: those That's the messaging that as I opened up the
- 8:08Speaker 1: podcast talking about, it's reflective off of his messaging. So
- 8:13Speaker 1: I know that there may be some that are worried
- 8:15Speaker 1: about the way that the direction that it's headed, may
- 8:19Speaker 1: be worried about Nick Sirianni's messaging resonating with the players.
- 8:23Speaker 1: I got to tell you, it's it seems like they
- 8:26Speaker 1: haven't missed the beat compared to last season. So encouraging there,
- 8:31Speaker 1: and that's why I led with that in my story,
- 8:34Speaker 1: that they're they're not going to be a signing blame.
- 8:37Speaker 1: And you could look at one coach in particular that's
- 8:41Speaker 1: gotten the he's felling, falling under intense scrutiny, and to
- 8:45Speaker 1: a degree I understand why, but there's so many factors
- 8:48Speaker 1: into his unit not playing particularly well, and that is
- 8:51Speaker 1: offensive cordator Kevin Patullo. That's the first person that I
- 8:55Speaker 1: thought of when Nick Sirianni was talking about not assigning blame.
- 8:59Speaker 1: But you have to get it right. It's one thing
- 9:01Speaker 1: to say it, it's another thing to go out there
- 9:03Speaker 1: and live it and execute and have the team go
- 9:07Speaker 1: out there and play inspired football. Sunday, a prominent veteran
- 9:13Speaker 1: offers insight into offensive struggles. That would be right tackle
- 9:16Speaker 1: Lane Johnson, an offensive coordinator. Kevin Patula responded, Look, Lane
- 9:22Speaker 1: Johnson doesn't mince words. He's in the midst of his
- 9:26Speaker 1: thirteenth NFL season and he's always very calculated with his messaging.
- 9:30Speaker 1: So when Lane Johnson speaks, it's very important to make
- 9:33Speaker 1: note of it and pay attention. So when Lane Johnson
- 9:37Speaker 1: stood in front of his crammed locker space at MetLife
- 9:41Speaker 1: Stadium following that loss, he had quite a bit to
- 9:45Speaker 1: say as it pertained to the offense, and he said,
- 9:49Speaker 1: we have spurts where where we show glimpses of what
- 9:51Speaker 1: we could be, but the consistency isn't there. It's not
- 9:54Speaker 1: a finger pointing show. I'm with Kevin until the end.
- 9:57Speaker 1: A lot of it goes down to execution. So we'll
- 10:00Speaker 1: go back and look at this tape and see what
- 10:02Speaker 1: we got to get fixed. But moving forward, we need
- 10:04Speaker 1: to be more efficient, less predictable, and capitalized on big
- 10:07Speaker 1: plays and explosives. And I always say it's one thing
- 10:12Speaker 1: for outside observers to cite predictability inconsistency as primary culprits
- 10:18Speaker 1: that are plaguing this high octane offense, at least on paper,
- 10:22Speaker 1: but the matter becomes all the more urgent when you
- 10:25Speaker 1: hear someone like Lane Johnson voicing some of these concerns.
- 10:31Speaker 1: So for the Eagles to reverse course and get things
- 10:34Speaker 1: headed in the right direction, they have to change and
- 10:37Speaker 1: they have to alter things all through their approach. That
- 10:40Speaker 1: needs to be implemented this week, but there are tangible
- 10:45Speaker 1: elements to monitor on that side of the ball coming
- 10:47Speaker 1: out of the by and I'll be looking to see
- 10:50Speaker 1: everything from getting to the huddle, getting out of the huddle,
- 10:54Speaker 1: earlier personnel groupings, sequencing execution on the field, because in
- 11:01Speaker 1: the midst of all this, the Eagles have had opportunities
- 11:03Speaker 1: for big plays. I think I go back to the
- 11:05Speaker 1: Kansas City Chiefs game. On the very first play, there's
- 11:08Speaker 1: a protection breakdown that precluded the Eagles from being able
- 11:11Speaker 1: to take the deep shot on the other side of
- 11:13Speaker 1: the field to AJ Brown to open the Chiefs game.
- 11:16Speaker 1: There was the play against the Denver Broncos that AJ
- 11:19Speaker 1: and Jalen weren't able to connect on. There was another
- 11:21Speaker 1: play that would have been an eighty nine yard touchdown
- 11:24Speaker 1: in the Giants game that they weren't able to connect
- 11:27Speaker 1: on either with Devonte Smith. So you know, there's been moments,
- 11:32Speaker 1: there's been opportunities for plays to be made, and sometimes
- 11:35Speaker 1: that changes the narrative a little bit. But there's no
- 11:38Speaker 1: doubt about it that the offense hasn't lived up to
- 11:40Speaker 1: expectations through the first six weeks, and that falls on
- 11:44Speaker 1: a lot of different figures, and it's going to be
- 11:47Speaker 1: on Kevin Patulo and Nick Sirianni and the coaching staff
- 11:50Speaker 1: to really get this thing headed in the right direction.
- 11:54Speaker 1: But I think something like this and it really seems
- 11:57Speaker 1: to be a galvanizing type of thing where they know
- 12:00Speaker 1: that they know how much talent that they have and
- 12:03Speaker 1: they know that they need to change things, and everything
- 12:06Speaker 1: that they have is in house, everything that they want
- 12:09Speaker 1: is right in front of them. But now, I mean
- 12:11Speaker 1: that sounds simple enough, and now it's about going out
- 12:13Speaker 1: there and making it happen. But I think what Kevin
- 12:20Speaker 1: Patullo said, he said, I think a lot of what
- 12:23Speaker 1: it comes down to is, and I know Nick Sirianni
- 12:25Speaker 1: alluded to this too, is sometimes situational moments in the
- 12:27Speaker 1: game where you're limited a little bit depending on where
- 12:30Speaker 1: you're at with field position, down in distance, select plays,
- 12:33Speaker 1: what the defense does at times if they're a big
- 12:36Speaker 1: edge pressure team during certain situations, that can dictate a
- 12:38Speaker 1: little bit of what you want to do. And I
- 12:41Speaker 1: think when you talk about the situational stuff and or
- 12:44Speaker 1: the predictability, you've just got to look at where the
- 12:48Speaker 1: whole context is. And I think that's where that's what
- 12:51Speaker 1: kind of the last air or so over the weekend
- 12:53Speaker 1: things were. We were able to look at where we were,
- 12:57Speaker 1: where we are, where we want to go, and what
- 13:00Speaker 1: we know we need to do to go forward. I
- 13:02Speaker 1: think it was very productive. We had a good meeting
- 13:05Speaker 1: yesterday as an offensive unit, and so I think we're
- 13:07Speaker 1: in a good spot moving forward.

- 16:37Speaker 2: Cam Den Apothecary top quality cannabis, great prices, and an
- 16:41Speaker 2: experience made for Philly fans twenty one and up.
- 16:45Speaker 1: So much like Nick Sirianni, Kevin Patullo took Lane Johnson's
- 16:48Speaker 1: comments as a positive and they're aware of it, and
- 16:52Speaker 1: they just have to enact the change. They have to
- 16:55Speaker 1: be the change, and then the players have to go
- 16:57Speaker 1: out there and execute it at a high level. With
- 17:01Speaker 1: those changes, with those play calls, with everything that goes
- 17:05Speaker 1: into it. It's a collective effort and that goes back
- 17:08Speaker 1: to the initial point of Nick Sirianni being adamant about
- 17:12Speaker 1: not assigning blame. Lastly, as we wrap things up, could
- 17:18Speaker 1: the Eagles turn to an in house solution in the
- 17:20Speaker 1: wake of Zadarias Smith's retirement. Zadarius Smith led the Eagles
- 17:24Speaker 1: with a sack and a half. Now he's no longer there.
- 17:27Speaker 1: The leading sack sack getter, if you will, on the
- 17:30Speaker 1: Eagles is Patrick Johnson with one and they have a
- 17:36Speaker 1: four man edge rusher group right now. And you have
- 17:39Speaker 1: to take notice that as the week starts to progress,
- 17:43Speaker 1: as it becomes increasingly unlikely that you're going to be
- 17:46Speaker 1: able to add a reinforcement in time to help on
- 17:49Speaker 1: Sunday against the Vikings. So you have to get creative,
- 17:52Speaker 1: and you have to look internally and what options do
- 17:54Speaker 1: you have, And vic Vangio said it's possible that the
- 17:58Speaker 1: Eagles could deploy rookie linebacker Jahad Campbell a little bit
- 18:02Speaker 1: more off the edge. That's something that has been mentioned,
- 18:07Speaker 1: has been asked to him many times this season, and
- 18:10Speaker 1: he sort of downplayed it. But as I like to say,
- 18:13Speaker 1: circumstances tend to alter plans, and this could be one
- 18:17Speaker 1: of those situations. Now, a lot of this comes down
- 18:19Speaker 1: to Na Kobe Dean. Na Kobe Dean, recently activated off
- 18:23Speaker 1: the reserve physically unable to perform lists with the knee injury,
- 18:27Speaker 1: played in this first game of the season against the Giants,
- 18:30Speaker 1: played six special team snaps. Theoretically, the more he plays,
- 18:36Speaker 1: the more likely the Eagles are going to be and
- 18:38Speaker 1: the more comfortable they'll be able to be in getting
- 18:40Speaker 1: him onto the field in defensive situations, they have an
- 18:43Speaker 1: embarrassment of riches at linebacker, which in this case plays
- 18:47Speaker 1: into the eagles favor because now, at least in theory,
- 18:51Speaker 1: you have the luxury of deploying the Kobe Dean if
- 18:54Speaker 1: he's ready for an expanded workload defensively as an off
- 18:59Speaker 1: ball linebacker, and then moving Jahad Campbell a little bit
- 19:02Speaker 1: more to the edge where he's able to kind of
- 19:05Speaker 1: absorb some of those vacant snaps that were created by
- 19:09Speaker 1: the retirement of Zadarius Smith. So it seems like the
- 19:13Speaker 1: Eagles have a plan in the short term. But I
- 19:17Speaker 1: am expecting general manager Howie Roseman to be aggressive. He's
- 19:20Speaker 1: always on the attack. He's always looking to do whatever
- 19:24Speaker 1: it takes for the betterment of the team, and it
- 19:27Speaker 1: enhanced the roster any way that he can, So I
- 19:29Speaker 1: am expecting that to happen. But in the short term,
- 19:32Speaker 1: your options are obviously limited to in house candidates, and
- 19:37Speaker 1: it looks like it sounds like there's a chance that
- 19:40Speaker 1: you're going to see more Jahad Campbell rushing off the edge.
- 19:44Speaker 1: So those are some of my takeaways this week. In
- 19:47Speaker 1: addition to if Quinya Mitchell is back in the mix
- 19:50Speaker 1: this week and available, adri Jackson will be the number
- 19:53Speaker 1: two cornerback. Vic Vangios seems, at least for the time being,
- 19:58Speaker 1: to have to be done with the Kilei Ringo experiment,
- 20:02Speaker 1: if you will, and things can change. Jacoryan Bennett is
- 20:08Speaker 1: due to return from IR. I guess he's eligible, and
- 20:13Speaker 1: I just asked him today how he's feeling. He said
- 20:15Speaker 1: it's coming along, and so we'll see how that whole
- 20:18Speaker 1: thing plays out. But those are some of my most
- 20:21Speaker 1: important or notable takeaways for the first two days of availability,
- 20:25Speaker 1: and it kind of paints the picture moving forward about
- 20:28Speaker 1: the psyche, the mindset, and some of the you know,
- 20:32Speaker 1: the inner workings and approach the Eagles are going to
- 20:35Speaker 1: take this week heading into Minnesota, another big week, but
- 20:39Speaker 1: we'll see if they're able to rise to the occasion here,
- 20:43Speaker 1: which they've done time and time again under the Nick
- 20:45Speaker 1: Sirianni in the Nick Sirianni era, in the Jalen Hurts era,
- 20:49Speaker 1: and I'm very much looking forward to seeing what they
- 20:52Speaker 1: have in store. They're back on the practice field tomorrow,
- 20:55Speaker 1: there's another round of locker room, and I will have
- 20:57Speaker 1: all of that for you right here on inside the
- 21:01Speaker 1: Birds and right here on to Czechodaily. This has been
- 21:04Speaker 1: to Checho Deaily. I'm Andrew de Checo and I will
- 21:07Speaker 1: catch you on the next one
