- 0:12on at twelve noon here along the Yukon Sports networking online via the Varsity Network
- 0:17app Varsitynetwork dot Com with coach as the Hussies get ready for Secret Heart.
- 0:24This is a kind of an emotional week, Jim. I would think around
- 0:27the team because it starts to you know, for a number of these guys,
- 0:32they're going to start to realize this is it. This is the last
- 0:35time I'm putting this uniform on here. Maybe you know, two more games
- 0:38obviously, but at home, have you noticed anything about guys in what they're
- 0:43you know, thinking and talking about at this point or is that something just
- 0:47comes on Saturday. I haven't, but we talked about it, you know,
- 0:54and really you talk to the underclassmen more than anything about honoring these guys
- 1:02that have you know, been through what these guys have been through, because
- 1:07it's been tough, and they've been resilient and they've shown great character and great
- 1:11leadership and great growth. And I could name you know, you know all
- 1:17the all the guys that have been here for you know, their entire career
- 1:22and what they've been through. I don't need to name them. They know
- 1:25who they are. People know who they are. But the thought that you
- 1:26know, in twenty nineteen they struggled, and in twenty twenty they didn't get
- 1:32to play and they you know, the COVID year was so hard on everybody,
- 1:37but our young men here. They didn't even get to play a football
- 1:40season, which would have given them a little bit of a life, you
- 1:42know, and yet they stuck around and they stuck with it. And then
- 1:45twenty twenty one, you know, there's a coaching change and the way that
- 1:49affects them, the uncertainty of that. And then last year, you know,
- 1:53to feel a little bit of success and value is great, and then
- 1:57this year to know they're a better football team, but not have it reflected
- 2:00in the record, not have a chance to go back to a bowl game.
- 2:04That's really hard. And we need to make sure that we respect what
- 2:06those guys have been through and that they're still here and they're still fighting.
- 2:10And we got to go out and we got to play for them and play
- 2:14for what they what they mean to us this program, what they represent and
- 2:17what and the resilience that they've shown. And that's kind of what we've talked
- 2:22about. I'm sure for the individual players there'll be emotional moments for them on
- 2:25Saturday, you know, before the game, when when their families are there
- 2:29and we you know, we call their name and they run out of the
- 2:30tunnel. But we still got we got two games left, you know,
- 2:36we got two left. So uh yeah, we want and on this week,
- 2:38we want. We don't want to act like this is the end,
- 2:40because it's not the end, No, no question about that. You got
- 2:45you Mass right after Thanksgiving. So as you look into the portal and going
- 2:50forward roster wise, you have some grads here who are obviously going to be
- 2:53playing their last home game, Jordan Porter among them. And and are you
- 2:59going to look for guys who are in their grad years and have one year
- 3:02of eligibility left, or do you look maybe at seniors who have a couple
- 3:07of years eligibility. How do you view that? We look for good football
- 3:10players that can come in and have an immediate impact on this team, whether
- 3:15that's a grad, it gives us a one year you know, kind of
- 3:19a rent a player, or it's a guy that has more years. I
- 3:22mean, obviously you like guys that have you know, multiple years. And
- 3:27we also look at junior college kids. You know, there's a lot of
- 3:29kids in junior college that are there for you know, for particular reasons that
- 3:32you know, maybe they've they've overcome now or they're bounced back guys, so
- 3:38you know, over of course, in the last four or five days,
- 3:42actually starting last Thursday, I've looked at over one hundred players that are either
- 3:46in the portal or junior college kids or we think may get in the portal
- 3:51and great at them. And because we have you know, like we have
- 3:54a staff of people that are constantly mining for information about guys who may go
- 4:03into portal. We already know who's in the portal looking at junior college,
- 4:06and then we have a filtering system and I just sit here and I watch
- 4:11the positions of need for us and try to identify guys so that we are
- 4:15we're ready to go. You know, when the ball drops, we're ready
- 4:18to go, and we will be ready to go. But you know what
- 4:21we want, Mike, is we want number one, we want good people.
- 4:25Okay, number two, we want damn good football players that have those
- 4:29things that I talked about mental toughness and competitive greatness and want to fit into
- 4:33what we want to be here and are winners. So that's that's what we're
- 4:36looking for. When you analyze a player from another school, whether it's junior
- 4:42college, could be a community college, how do you do it? I
- 4:45mean, how much tape is there available on guys at that level? You
- 4:48don't think about community college teams having video of their games and stuff like that.
- 4:53How do you go about analyzing that cape? You'd be surprised how much
- 4:58is out there. You know, you can get almost every game of every
- 5:01player from high school on up if you if you search for it. There's
- 5:06resources that these kids use to promote themselves obviously and that you can access to
- 5:13evaluate. So we have multiple ways to look at them, and we do
- 5:17and then you know, if if it's a point in the process where we're
- 5:23able to talk to them or talk to someone around them, we do that.
- 5:27So there's a lot of ways that you evaluate, and mean obviously evaluate
- 5:30the performance, and then you know, the thing you always have to keep
- 5:31in mind is level of competition. You might get really excited about a guy,
- 5:38but then you look at the level of competition and it's it's poor and
- 5:42it doesn't translate to what we need at this level. But there's some guys
- 5:46that play a poor level of competition, but you just see the physical traits
- 5:50that indicate this guy can can level up. And so you know, it's
- 5:56really it's a lot of experience and it's a lot of different eyes looking at
- 6:00each player. So it's not just one person saying, hey, yeah,
- 6:04I like this guy. You know, we we got to come to a
- 6:08consensus as a staff and we and we we've been able to do a decent
- 6:12job of that. Yeah, I thought an example, you know, I'm
- 6:15disappointed we missed on a couple of guys in the portal this year and that
- 6:17and that bothers me, you know, because that's that's a wasted spot.
- 6:23And going forward in the future, if we're in the portal and you know,
- 6:26we're we're able to be active with the NIL piece, Uh, we
- 6:30absolutely can't miss on one. Not on one, because it's not just a
- 6:33spot, it's also it's also financial resources that we that we need. Yeah,
- 6:39there's a lot to it, that's for sure. We'll wrap up our
- 6:42little discussion on JMU. They got some guys came from small colleges that were
- 6:46pretty good for them the other day, and then we'll get into Sacred Heart
- 6:49and that long touchdown that JMU got away with that I know, coach you
- 6:55were not happy with. I watched you on the sidelines. I was with
- 6:58you all along on that one. That's coming up. We continue on the
- 7:00Yukon Football Coaches Show here from Blearfield
