- 0:01SPEAKER_01: Extra extra keep the light locked the new York topic with the late lights locked from the garden lock into the stage that we lost every what does it mean?
- 0:13SPEAKER_01: Come into these tweakers, big box dudes off breaks, building the mess games, that's giant next on the right.
- 0:20SPEAKER_01: Let the whole city decide.
- 0:22SPEAKER_01: No free off answers, no sitting on the fence with laps, making it make sense, running down lights, hit the mic, right on the radio.
- 0:32SPEAKER_00: Let's do it to it in the Alrighty then, ladies and gentlemen.
- 0:38SPEAKER_00: That is my best ace Ventura impression, by the way, if you're wondering.
- 0:43SPEAKER_00: Welcome back to another episode of Rice on the Radio.
- 0:46SPEAKER_00: NFL Week Two is officially in the books.
- 0:52SPEAKER_00: And I feel like this was the week where the NFL immediately started correcting some of the things we thought we knew after week one.
- 1:01SPEAKER_00: Because that's what we do every year.
- 1:05SPEAKER_00: We watch one football game and immediately decide we know exactly what every team is.
- 1:11SPEAKER_00: This team's a contender.
- 1:13SPEAKER_00: This team's dead.
- 1:14SPEAKER_00: The quarterback figured it out.
- 1:16SPEAKER_00: This coach is an idiot.
- 1:18SPEAKER_00: And then seven days later, the league basically says, Yeah, nah nah nah nah, you don't know shit.
- 1:24SPEAKER_00: There were definitely some teams that came crashing back down to earth this week.
- 1:29SPEAKER_00: There were some teams that I thought might stink that suddenly looked pretty damn interesting.
- 1:34SPEAKER_00: And well, we've got some of the uh some of the established teams around the league starting to remind everybody exactly who the hell they are.
- 1:42SPEAKER_00: The big boys are kind of kind of coming back into frame here.
- 1:46SPEAKER_00: Buffalo looks great, Kansas City looks like Kansas City, Seattle looks nasty, San Francisco just keeps rolling.
- 1:55SPEAKER_00: Unfortunately, the other major theme of week two was injuries.
- 2:00SPEAKER_00: Because apparently, two weeks into the season, everybody's body just is falling apart.
- 2:06SPEAKER_00: This is why we let play a lot of preseason games, guys.
- 2:09SPEAKER_00: Get you ready and accustomed to the game.
- 2:11SPEAKER_00: No?
- 2:12SPEAKER_00: Guess not?
- 2:14SPEAKER_00: Locally, we got two very different conversations going on here.
- 2:17SPEAKER_00: The Jets, the Jets somehow found a very Jets way to lose a game that they really had no business losing, but we probably had penciled in as a loss at the beginning of the year.
- 2:32SPEAKER_00: And with the Giants, the the final score on Monday night isn't even the biggest story anymore.
- 2:39SPEAKER_00: Losing Jackson Dart might have just completely changed the entire two-year outlook that it was that it it was supposed to be about.
- 2:50SPEAKER_00: We'll get to all that.
- 2:52SPEAKER_00: Then I think we're gonna look ahead to week three because there are about four or five games.
- 2:58SPEAKER_00: Four that I really want to watch with some good baked-in storylines and a bunch of injuries from this week that are already changing what those matchups could feel like.
- 3:08SPEAKER_00: And then we finish this week's episode with a little roll in the dice with rice because, quite frankly, a little self-pat on the ass here.
- 3:15SPEAKER_00: We have been cooking lately.
- 3:18SPEAKER_00: So, as they say, I guess there's only one way to find out.
- 3:23SPEAKER_00: Let's do it to it, right?
- 3:24SPEAKER_00: Ah, you guys thought I forgot.
- 3:27SPEAKER_00: You guys thought I forgot.
- 3:28SPEAKER_00: He thought I switched it up.
- 3:30SPEAKER_00: Come on now.
- 3:32SPEAKER_00: Can't leave out the uh the intro here, the opening line, the the tagline, the first thing I ever recorded on this mic that I'm speaking into by accident, I should add.
- 3:44SPEAKER_00: Anyway, let's get into it.
- 3:47SPEAKER_00: Week two roundup.
- 3:48SPEAKER_00: Got a couple games here that I want to get into.
- 3:50SPEAKER_00: And the first one on the docket, Buffalo and Detroit, because this game was pretty much exactly what everybody wanted it to be.
- 4:01SPEAKER_00: Bills 41, Lions 31.
- 4:05SPEAKER_00: There are certain matchups you see on the schedule where everybody spends the entire week talking about how fun it's gonna be, how many points are gonna get scored, how big my fantasy team is gonna do.
- 4:16SPEAKER_00: And then halftime, the game finishes 17-13.
- 4:21SPEAKER_00: This was not that.
- 4:24SPEAKER_00: Buffalo and Detroit went out there and said, Alright, you guys want offense?
- 4:27SPEAKER_00: Alright, I got some offense for you.
- 4:29SPEAKER_00: And Josh Allen, man.
- 4:31SPEAKER_00: I I don't, I'm as a Jets fan, this sucks, but I'm I don't know what else there is to say about this guy sometimes.
- 4:38SPEAKER_00: He really does look like a man amongst boys.
- 4:42SPEAKER_00: It's like it's like when you're a kid and there's that one kid in your grade who hit puberty three years before everybody else.
- 4:48SPEAKER_00: You're all 12 years old, you got squeaky voices, you got five foot nothing bodies on you, and this dude has a beard and looks like he's about to go play varsity football.
- 4:58SPEAKER_00: That is Josh Allen sometimes against the NFL players.
- 5:02SPEAKER_00: There's not a whole lot anybody can do about it.
- 5:05SPEAKER_00: Five total touchdowns, throwing it, running it, moving around, extending plays, and James Cook.
- 5:11SPEAKER_00: James Cook looked great too, finally.
- 5:14SPEAKER_00: Week one was a little bit of a scare against Houston there, but that's an elite rushing defense.
- 5:19SPEAKER_00: Buffalo looks like Buffalo, man.
- 5:22SPEAKER_00: That's that's really that's where I'm at with them.
- 5:25SPEAKER_00: I'm not searching for some deeper conclusion right now.
- 5:28SPEAKER_00: They look like one of the teams we expected to be there at the end.
- 5:33SPEAKER_00: Detroit, though, I don't think this was some giant red flag for them either.
- 5:39SPEAKER_00: I mean, they scored 31.
- 5:41SPEAKER_00: Jared Goff threw the hell out of the football.
- 5:43SPEAKER_00: Amon Ra looked great.
- 5:45SPEAKER_00: They've got weapons everywhere.
- 5:48SPEAKER_00: And selfishly, if Jared Goff wants to keep throwing the ball all over the yard like that, that's perfectly in line with me because I gave out the season long passing yardage over for him in the beginning of the year.
- 5:59SPEAKER_00: So, yeah, keep chucking that thing, Jared.
- 6:02SPEAKER_00: Go for broke.
- 6:03SPEAKER_00: The DJ Moore injury sucks.
- 6:06SPEAKER_00: I was really high on him coming out into the season.
- 6:10SPEAKER_00: So hopefully that's not something that lingers too long.
- 6:13SPEAKER_00: But overall, Detroit losing to a really good football team in a shootout, Buffalo just looked like the better team, man.
- 6:21SPEAKER_00: So first entry into my unofficial week two category of the big boys are back, Buffalo.
- 6:28SPEAKER_00: Next game on the list, the local Packers, Jets.
- 6:35SPEAKER_00: 2017 in overtime.
- 6:40SPEAKER_00: This was a Jets game.
- 6:42SPEAKER_00: This was really the best way that I can describe it, a Jets game.
- 6:47SPEAKER_00: The same old Jets.
- 6:50SPEAKER_00: If you've been watching this franchise for any length of time, you've watched some version of that football game before.
- 6:57SPEAKER_00: Look, they played well enough to win.
- 7:00SPEAKER_00: Things were good.
- 7:02SPEAKER_00: There were things that I liked.
- 7:03SPEAKER_00: There were things that I actually thought were very encouraging.
- 7:06SPEAKER_00: And somehow, at the end of the day, you're sitting there wondering how the hell they lost.
- 7:15SPEAKER_00: The defense did its job.
- 7:17SPEAKER_00: I thought the offensive line looked better in spots.
- 7:20SPEAKER_00: Gino was under some pressure, yeah, but he's still doing a pretty good job protecting the football, which was always his big bugaboo, so to speak.
- 7:30SPEAKER_00: But then you add in 13 penalties for 156 yards.
- 7:35SPEAKER_00: That's disgusting, no matter how you slice it.
- 7:37SPEAKER_00: I don't care who you're playing.
- 7:40SPEAKER_00: I don't care how good your defense is, I don't care how talented your roster may be.
- 7:46SPEAKER_00: You cannot consistently survive that.
- 7:49SPEAKER_00: And then don't even get me started on special team stuff here.
- 7:52SPEAKER_00: You know, oh, they got the best punter in the league.
- 7:54SPEAKER_00: The special team's head coach is a monster.
- 7:58SPEAKER_00: Make the tackle, please.
- 8:01SPEAKER_00: I'm begging you, for the love of God, you're playing a close football game.
- 8:05SPEAKER_00: Your defense is doing its job.
- 8:07SPEAKER_00: You cannot give Green Bay a giant return and hand them the field position.
- 8:14SPEAKER_00: Not only the defense forced four fumbles, but they only recovered one, so I guess that's kind of promising.
- 8:27SPEAKER_00: But can we get an interception?
- 8:30SPEAKER_00: Somebody wearing a Jets jersey, wearing the all-whites, wearing the green and whites, something.
- 8:36SPEAKER_00: Can one defensive back just snag the ball out of the air, please?
- 8:40SPEAKER_00: Because I know what's going to eventually happen.
- 8:42SPEAKER_00: And when it does, they're it it people are gonna act like it's the funniest thing in the world, right?
- 8:48SPEAKER_00: It's always easy to beat the uh the down dog, right?
- 8:51SPEAKER_00: It's always kick the kick the horse while it's down.
- 8:54SPEAKER_00: I don't know, whatever expression I'm trying to say here.
- 8:56SPEAKER_00: I can see it now.
- 8:57SPEAKER_00: The Jets are gonna get an interception, and then it's gonna turn into every meme is here's what was, here's here's what happened since the Jets' last interception.
- 9:07SPEAKER_00: Whatever.
- 9:08SPEAKER_00: The thing that bothered me the most coming out of this game really is the coaching.
- 9:16SPEAKER_00: And I I don't mean that in the stupid screaming sports radio way where, like, why are we not taking a timeout?
- 9:24SPEAKER_00: I mean, yes, why are we not taking a timeout?
- 9:26SPEAKER_00: But like, I don't know.
- 9:29SPEAKER_00: One of the things this season is supposed to tell me is whether or not the Jets have their coach.
- 9:35SPEAKER_00: And if you've listened to the podcast before, you know that I'm actually higher on Aaron Glenn than most people are.
- 9:42SPEAKER_00: Do we have the guy?
- 9:44SPEAKER_00: Is the question this season.
- 9:47SPEAKER_00: And I think week two goes down as one where Aaron Glenn deserves a pretty serious share of the blame.
- 9:54SPEAKER_00: You know, late in regulation, Green Bay gets the football.
- 9:57SPEAKER_00: Glenn has timeouts, and he basically just decides, eh, we're good, we're gonna go to overtime.
- 10:03SPEAKER_00: Then afterwards, he stands by it.
- 10:05SPEAKER_00: Fine, man.
- 10:06SPEAKER_00: You're allowed to stand by your decision, but I am also allowed to hate it and criticize you on it.
- 10:12SPEAKER_00: I would have liked the opportunity to get the ball back.
- 10:15SPEAKER_00: You're at home, you got some timeouts, give your offense a chance.
- 10:19SPEAKER_00: I know it's been stagnant, but at least try and get in range, something.
- 10:24SPEAKER_00: Maybe Gino throws a pick.
- 10:26SPEAKER_00: Maybe nothing happens.
- 10:27SPEAKER_00: Maybe you take a shot and you win the goddamn game.
- 10:31SPEAKER_00: But regardless, I don't love willingly surrendering that opportunity.
- 10:37SPEAKER_00: You know, and another thing that I found interesting going through some of the stuff that I had saved this week for this episode, week one, Frank Reich got praised for getting weird with the tight ends, right?
- 10:50SPEAKER_00: Oh, 5-0 personnel, heavy personnel, different formations, guys in motions.
- 10:56SPEAKER_00: You found something that worked that got your rookie number 15 overall, Kenyan Sadiq, athletic freak monster involved in the game.
- 11:08SPEAKER_00: And then against Green Bay, they spent most of the game in three wide receiver formation.
- 11:15SPEAKER_00: Why?
- 11:16SPEAKER_00: Especially when you're already thin at receiver.
- 11:19SPEAKER_00: And the run game went absolutely nowhere.
- 11:23SPEAKER_00: So that's another coaching question I'm keeping in the back of my mind.
- 11:26SPEAKER_00: You don't have to reinvent the offense every week just for the sake of doing something different.
- 11:32SPEAKER_00: If you find something that works, use it until somebody stops it.
- 11:36SPEAKER_00: Hell, the Giants on Monday night against the Cowboys, or excuse me, Sunday night against the Cowboys last week, ran the same play four times in a row and scored a touchdown on the fourth time that they ran it.
- 11:51SPEAKER_00: One positive I do want to get into David Bailey looks like that dude.
- 11:56SPEAKER_00: I'm not going to start screaming defensive rookie of the year after two weeks, but I think his odds are the favorite, and you can see it in him.
- 12:05SPEAKER_00: He is getting pressure.
- 12:06SPEAKER_00: He's already got two sacks.
- 12:08SPEAKER_00: He's making things happen.
- 12:09SPEAKER_00: I think his over-under on the year was five and a half sacks.
- 12:12SPEAKER_00: So if he's already got two two weeks in, I had called for double digits, at least nine.
- 12:18SPEAKER_00: That's pretty encouraging.
- 12:21SPEAKER_00: And this is where I have to balance being a frustrated Jet fan and being somewhat reasonable.
- 12:26SPEAKER_00: They should have won the game.
- 12:28SPEAKER_00: I'm pissed that they lost the game.
- 12:33SPEAKER_00: But if you had told me before the season started that the Jets were going to go to Tennessee, beat the Titans, then play in Green Bay, and come out of those first two games one and one, I probably would have taken it.
- 12:48SPEAKER_00: So I'm not sitting here saying the season's over.
- 12:54SPEAKER_00: Gino hasn't been giving the football away yet.
- 12:59SPEAKER_00: There are some things to build on.
- 13:02SPEAKER_00: But clean this shit up, man.
- 13:04SPEAKER_00: And also, by the way, this is I keep saying by the way.
- 13:09SPEAKER_00: I saw a ridiculous stat on Twitter that is the most Jets thing in the world.
- 13:14SPEAKER_00: Of course it is.
- 13:16SPEAKER_00: Geno Smith is about to enter the top 10 in Jets history in passing yards.
- 13:22SPEAKER_00: He needs 117 yards to pass.
- 13:27SPEAKER_00: Go ahead, I'll I'll wait.
- 13:29SPEAKER_00: Take your guesses on which quarterback it is.
- 13:33SPEAKER_00: He needs 117 yards to pass Zach Wilson to climb into the top ten.
- 13:43SPEAKER_00: Yeah, that was a long dramatic pause for that.
- 13:45SPEAKER_00: Do you know who's ahead of Zach Wilson, by the way?
- 13:48SPEAKER_00: Ryan Fitzpatrick.
- 13:51SPEAKER_00: So I'll let that let that set in also.
- 13:56SPEAKER_00: This is the New York Jets experience, man.
- 13:59SPEAKER_00: And lastly, one little thing before I get off my soapbox here.
- 14:05SPEAKER_00: Tennessee, who the Jets beat in week one, turned around and gave Philadelphia everything that they could handle in week two.
- 14:13SPEAKER_00: So, you know, by principal property or whatever it is, because I'm not the best math major.
- 14:20SPEAKER_00: I'm here talking sports into a mic.
- 14:23SPEAKER_00: Maybe that week one win deserves a tiny bit more credit than we're giving it.
- 14:28SPEAKER_00: We're coming back to Tennessee later, too, because now they're headed into MetLife to play the Giants and a little Day Ball action coming home, so stick around for that.
- 14:38SPEAKER_00: Next game on my list here that I circled.
- 14:41SPEAKER_00: Where is it?
- 14:42SPEAKER_00: Where is it?
- 14:42SPEAKER_00: Oh Panthers oh yeah, this is a banger.
- 14:44SPEAKER_00: Panthers 34, Falcons three.
- 14:49SPEAKER_00: I think it's officially panic button time in Atlanta.
- 14:53SPEAKER_00: I understand the quarterback situation has been a mess.
- 14:56SPEAKER_00: I understand you've been down to your third quarterback.
- 15:01SPEAKER_00: Fine, fine.
- 15:02SPEAKER_00: That explains some of it.
- 15:05SPEAKER_00: It does not explain three points.
- 15:08SPEAKER_00: Number one, there is way too much talent on this offense for it to look this dysfunctional.
- 15:12SPEAKER_00: I don't care who is playing quarterback.
- 15:14SPEAKER_00: B.
- 15:15SPEAKER_00: John Robinson is one of the best running backs in football.
- 15:18SPEAKER_00: Drake London is a stud at 6'5.
- 15:22SPEAKER_00: Kyle Pitts is still talented, and he's no longer a rookie.
- 15:26SPEAKER_00: He knows how to get open.
- 15:28SPEAKER_00: The offensive line isn't the greatest, but it's not bad enough to justify this.
- 15:35SPEAKER_00: This offense just looks broken.
- 15:38SPEAKER_00: And when you see guys like Bichon and London clearly frustrated on the sideline, talking to each other, saying, What the F man?
- 15:46SPEAKER_00: I'm not pretending I know exactly what's going on, but body language is body language.
- 15:51SPEAKER_00: These guys know what this offense is supposed to look like, and this ain't it.
- 15:56SPEAKER_00: Now on the Carolina side, I might have to start walking back some of the things that I had said about them before the season.
- 16:03SPEAKER_00: Because Bryce Young looks a lot more like the quarterback everybody thought could go number one overall.
- 16:09SPEAKER_00: Tetra Tobe McMillan looks legit.
- 16:12SPEAKER_00: Jalen Coker is turning into a legitimate piece.
- 16:15SPEAKER_00: The running game is functional.
- 16:16SPEAKER_00: Now they just lost Jonathan Brooks for a couple weeks here, but Chuba Hubbard can handle the load.
- 16:22SPEAKER_00: And when you beat a division opponent 34-3 in their house, yeah, I'm paying attention.
- 16:30SPEAKER_00: Now, look, I'm not crowning Carolina by any means of the word here, but I am definitely more interested than I was two weeks ago.
- 16:40SPEAKER_00: As for Atlanta, yeah, the panic button, man.
- 16:43SPEAKER_00: We'll come back to them at the end of the show because they're playing Green Bay Thursday night, and I got a couple bets that I like for that game, actually.
- 16:51SPEAKER_00: Next on the list, Raiders, Chargers.
- 16:55SPEAKER_00: For my Raiders fans out there.
- 16:57SPEAKER_00: Raiders 26, Chargers 14.
- 17:00SPEAKER_00: How about them, Raiders, huh?
- 17:03SPEAKER_00: All offseason, we heard about the Chargers.
- 17:06SPEAKER_00: Mike McDaniel is gonna unlock Justin Herbert.
- 17:09SPEAKER_00: This is the year.
- 17:10SPEAKER_00: The offense is finally gonna explode.
- 17:13SPEAKER_00: They're healthy.
- 17:13SPEAKER_00: They got weapons.
- 17:15SPEAKER_00: This is the breakout we've been waiting for.
- 17:18SPEAKER_00: Yeah, now they're 0-2.
- 17:20SPEAKER_00: Chargers gonna charger, right?
- 17:22SPEAKER_00: Same old Jets.
- 17:23SPEAKER_00: I've always bet against the Chargers in a big spot.
- 17:27SPEAKER_00: Look, I don't know.
- 17:28SPEAKER_00: I don't know what else to say, man.
- 17:29SPEAKER_00: Lad McConkey hasn't been completely healthy, so I guess I'll give him that.
- 17:34SPEAKER_00: But through two weeks, Las Vegas looked like a more coherent football operation, which is something you would have never said last year.
- 17:43SPEAKER_00: The offensive line looks better.
- 17:44SPEAKER_00: Clint Kubiak has them organized.
- 17:46SPEAKER_00: Kirk Cousins looks comfortable with Mendoza waiting in the wings.
- 17:50SPEAKER_00: They're feeding the hell out of Ash and Janty, which I told you they were gonna do.
- 17:55SPEAKER_00: The stat line wasn't pretty this week, but he got 21 carries.
- 17:59SPEAKER_00: That's usage.
- 18:00SPEAKER_00: That's commitment.
- 18:01SPEAKER_00: Everybody's worried about Mike Washington split in time.
- 18:04SPEAKER_00: This guy is a full Bell Cow running back in this system.
- 18:08SPEAKER_00: And the defense looks better.
- 18:09SPEAKER_00: They spent money.
- 18:10SPEAKER_00: Max Crosby is still Max Crosby.
- 18:12SPEAKER_00: Thank God that trade didn't go through, huh?
- 18:15SPEAKER_00: And they beat the Chargers without Brock Bowers.
- 18:19SPEAKER_00: Look, I'm not ready to say the Raiders are some great football team right now.
- 18:24SPEAKER_00: I might not, I'm not even really ready to say they're going to the playoffs.
- 18:28SPEAKER_00: It's been two weeks.
- 18:30SPEAKER_00: But they are 2-0.
- 18:32SPEAKER_00: And who in their right mind at the beginning of the season had the Raiders sit next to Kansas City in the division standings at 2-0?
- 18:40SPEAKER_00: I didn't.
- 18:41SPEAKER_00: I sure as hell didn't.
- 18:42SPEAKER_00: I'm not going to pretend that I did.
- 18:44SPEAKER_00: And speaking of the Chiefs, Chiefs, Colts, Sunday night football.
- 18:51SPEAKER_00: 33-30 into overtime, nonetheless.
- 18:56SPEAKER_00: This felt like a little bit of a screw you, we're still the Chiefs game, right?
- 19:04SPEAKER_00: Mahomes throws for almost 400 yards, three touchdowns, no picks, and this guy who just came back from a major knee injury, which is crazy to think that in ACL, guys are just coming back so fast from it that it's like, is it even a major injury anymore?
- 19:23SPEAKER_00: But Kelsey looked like Kelsey.
- 19:26SPEAKER_00: He had a monster line.
- 19:27SPEAKER_00: Kenneth Walker gave them something like he always does, which was a great signing in the offseason.
- 19:32SPEAKER_00: The offense put up over 500 yards.
- 19:35SPEAKER_00: And look, I know, again, it is only week two, but this felt more like the Kansas City team we all recognize.
- 19:43SPEAKER_00: Another entry into the big boys are back category.
- 19:47SPEAKER_00: I don't completely want to dismiss Indianapolis either, because going into Arrowhead and hanging around like that is not exactly nothing.
- 19:58SPEAKER_00: You know, Jonathan Taylor just continues to prove why he is a monster.
- 20:02SPEAKER_00: Tyler Warren looked pretty good after what is what do we want to call it?
- 20:08SPEAKER_00: A lackluster performance week one.
- 20:12SPEAKER_00: And they're 0-2, which obviously isn't where you want to be.
- 20:17SPEAKER_00: But this doesn't feel like a hopeless 0-2, which is bad for me considering the uh Jets own their first round pick.
- 20:26SPEAKER_00: But I guess, you know, good for the uh indie fans.
- 20:30SPEAKER_00: I don't know.
- 20:32SPEAKER_00: We're gonna talk about them in a little bit too because Indianapolis plays Houston this week, and one of those teams is leaving the game 0-3.
- 20:41SPEAKER_00: You know, when you start 0-2, you got like a 15% chance to make the playoffs.
- 20:45SPEAKER_00: You start 0-3, it's pretty much a death sentence.
- 20:48SPEAKER_00: Before I get to the Giants here, because that is the story of the NFL, really.
- 20:58SPEAKER_00: Three quick takes from some games that I don't really need to spend five minutes on getting into.
- 21:03SPEAKER_00: Saints Ravens, Tyler Shuck has something.
- 21:07SPEAKER_00: I don't know what it is.
- 21:09SPEAKER_00: I'm not sitting here saying Tyler Shuck is Eli in the fourth quarter or anything like that, but there's something about the way that he plays late.
- 21:18SPEAKER_00: New Orleans starts slowly, he starts slowly, things look ugly, and he just doesn't seem bothered by it at all.
- 21:26SPEAKER_00: Baltimore looked like they were getting ready to put that game away, and Shuck just kept hanging around and hanging around until suddenly New Orleans was a team making the plays late.
- 21:35SPEAKER_00: You can't teach that part.
- 21:37SPEAKER_00: They've got to figure out how to stop sleeping through the beginning of football games, but I like something about that kid.
- 21:43SPEAKER_00: Cincinnati and Houston.
- 21:46SPEAKER_00: Maybe Cincinnati's defense isn't completely garbage anymore.
- 21:50SPEAKER_00: That's basically my takeaway.
- 21:52SPEAKER_00: Burrow didn't have to go completely nuclear.
- 21:54SPEAKER_00: I mean, and Houston couldn't finish anything.
- 21:57SPEAKER_00: I'm not completely jumping on the CJ.
- 22:01SPEAKER_00: Regression train, but he definitely showed flashes of what happened last year.
- 22:07SPEAKER_00: Not great.
- 22:09SPEAKER_00: But Houston is 0-2.
- 22:11SPEAKER_00: And again, that makes week three very interesting here.
- 22:15SPEAKER_00: Seattle, Seattle looks mean.
- 22:19SPEAKER_00: Okay.
- 22:19SPEAKER_00: I heard somebody describe their defense as looking like they woke up and chose violence.
- 22:24SPEAKER_00: And that's exactly what it feels like I'm watching.
- 22:27SPEAKER_00: It's not just that they want to get off the field on third down.
- 22:31SPEAKER_00: They look like they want to stick every play to you and suck the life out of you.
- 22:37SPEAKER_00: There is an edge to that team right now.
- 22:39SPEAKER_00: And I like it.
- 22:41SPEAKER_00: Alright, the big ticket item here.
- 22:45SPEAKER_00: G in Rams 28, Giants 6, Monday night football.
- 22:51SPEAKER_00: Home opener.
- 22:53SPEAKER_00: And what a miserable Monday night it was.
- 22:57SPEAKER_00: The weird thing here is the 28-6 score, it's not even the part of the game Giants fans are going to remember going forward.
- 23:08SPEAKER_00: Losing Jackson Dart, first drive, second play.
- 23:13SPEAKER_00: Ooh, I'm getting flashbacks of Aaron Rodgers here.
- 23:17SPEAKER_00: Before we get there, though, I don't want the injury to completely cover up everything else that went wrong.
- 23:23SPEAKER_00: Giants got exposed.
- 23:25SPEAKER_00: Okay.
- 23:26SPEAKER_00: The secondary got smoked, which we knew this secondary wasn't going to be good coming into this season, but you hoped that the front seven was going to be able to at least, I don't know, get to the passer quick enough.
- 23:38SPEAKER_00: Matthew Stafford and Devontae Adams looked like they were five years younger Monday night.
- 23:43SPEAKER_00: The defensive front, which is again supposed to be one of their major strengths of this roster, got pushed around.
- 23:51SPEAKER_00: They could not stop the run.
- 23:52SPEAKER_00: They could not stop the pass.
- 23:56SPEAKER_00: And then the Giants couldn't even establish their own run game at all, which is what we all thought this team was going to be going into the season.
- 24:05SPEAKER_00: This was supposed to be a team that could play physical football, run it, control the line, let Dart make plays when he had to, right?
- 24:13SPEAKER_00: Yeah, none of that happened.
- 24:15SPEAKER_00: And then Dart gets hurt on the opening drive.
- 24:18SPEAKER_00: Jameis Winston comes in, and Jameis looked terrible.
- 24:23SPEAKER_00: I don't know how else to say it.
- 24:25SPEAKER_00: He didn't look ready.
- 24:26SPEAKER_00: His arm didn't look right to me.
- 24:28SPEAKER_00: Balls were dying on the way to the receivers.
- 24:30SPEAKER_00: The offense looked completely different.
- 24:33SPEAKER_00: And here is why that bothers me beyond just saying that the backup played badly.
- 24:40SPEAKER_00: The Giants specifically gave Jameis Winston an extension before the season.
- 24:45SPEAKER_00: They invested in him because they believed if something happens to Dart, which happens to happen from time to time, this is the guy who can keep them afloat.
- 24:54SPEAKER_00: You know, and you have a young quarterback who plays physically.
- 24:57SPEAKER_00: He runs, he takes hits.
- 25:00SPEAKER_00: The possibility that you might need your backup quarterback wasn't exactly an impossible scenario to imagine.
- 25:08SPEAKER_00: So if John Harbaugh and his calling card is preparation and details and professionalism and having everybody ready, ready to go.
- 25:19SPEAKER_00: No slouching.
- 25:21SPEAKER_00: How does your backup quarterback look that unprepared?
- 25:26SPEAKER_00: Maybe a full week of practice changes everything here.
- 25:29SPEAKER_00: Maybe Jameis comes out Sunday and looks completely different.
- 25:32SPEAKER_00: Fine.
- 25:34SPEAKER_00: But Monday was ugly.
- 25:35SPEAKER_00: No way around it.
- 25:38SPEAKER_00: Now, now we get to Dart.
- 25:40SPEAKER_00: Now we get to the headline.
- 25:43SPEAKER_00: Burying the lead, as they say.
- 25:47SPEAKER_00: He's done for the regular season.
- 25:49SPEAKER_00: It was MCL, it was a little ACL, and it was meniscus.
- 25:53SPEAKER_00: Oh, they're going in to clean all that up.
- 25:56SPEAKER_00: Now, just like we talked about Patrick Mahomes, it seems like guys come back a little faster than normal from this surgery.
- 26:06SPEAKER_00: But we're not calling Jackson Dart Patrick Mahomes anytime soon.
- 26:11SPEAKER_00: And this is where I think the conversation goes beyond just, man, that sucks.
- 26:18SPEAKER_00: The Giants lost their quarterback.
- 26:20SPEAKER_00: What are we going to do this season?
- 26:22SPEAKER_00: No, no, no, no, no, no.
- 26:24SPEAKER_00: What the Giants really lost is another year of information.
- 26:30SPEAKER_00: That's what this season was supposed to be about.
- 26:34SPEAKER_00: You hire John Harbaugh.
- 26:36SPEAKER_00: You feel pretty confident about the coach.
- 26:38SPEAKER_00: You feel like you got the guy.
- 26:40SPEAKER_00: Now you needed to answer the question at quarterback.
- 26:43SPEAKER_00: Is Jackson Dart the guy?
- 26:45SPEAKER_00: Can he take the year two leap?
- 26:47SPEAKER_00: Can he become the quarterback you've been building the next five, six, seven years around?
- 26:54SPEAKER_00: And now that evaluation gets interrupted.
- 26:56SPEAKER_00: And that sucks.
- 26:59SPEAKER_00: The Jets and Giants are almost in opposite situations here.
- 27:03SPEAKER_00: The Jets know they haven't completely solved the quarterback position.
- 27:07SPEAKER_00: Actually, they haven't solved it in shit.
- 27:10SPEAKER_00: 50 years, 60 years, 30 years?
- 27:13SPEAKER_00: I don't know.
- 27:13SPEAKER_00: When did Vinnie Tessaffardi play?
- 27:15SPEAKER_00: 99.
- 27:17SPEAKER_00: They're right now just trying to find out if they have a coach or not.
- 27:21SPEAKER_00: The Giants felt like they found the coach, right?
- 27:26SPEAKER_00: They were trying to find out if they have the quarterback now with Scatterbo, with neighbors, bringing in Odell, getting the offensive line.
- 27:35SPEAKER_00: Now you don't even get a full season to answer it.
- 27:38SPEAKER_00: You burn another year of the rookie contract, you lose another year of development, and then next offseason, you're still sitting there asking some of the same questions.
- 27:49SPEAKER_00: And don't do it.
- 27:51SPEAKER_00: Giant fans, I'm telling you, don't do it.
- 27:55SPEAKER_00: I already know what the conversation is going to become if the Giants season falls apart quickly here.
- 28:00SPEAKER_00: It's going to be tank.
- 28:02SPEAKER_00: It's going to be get the high draft pick.
- 28:04SPEAKER_00: Take another quarterback.
- 28:05SPEAKER_00: Arch Manning.
- 28:06SPEAKER_00: Let's get a Manning back in the blue.
- 28:10SPEAKER_00: Stop.
- 28:11SPEAKER_00: Don't.
- 28:12SPEAKER_00: That's dumb.
- 28:13SPEAKER_00: That's stupid.
- 28:14SPEAKER_00: That's garbage.
- 28:15SPEAKER_00: Whatever shiny quarterback prospect everybody falls in love with.
- 28:20SPEAKER_00: Do you people realize how goddamn hard it is to find even a quarterback who looks like he might be the guy?
- 28:30SPEAKER_00: Forget finding Patrick Mahomes.
- 28:31SPEAKER_00: Forget Josh Allen.
- 28:32SPEAKER_00: Forget some generational superstar.
- 28:35SPEAKER_00: Finding a young quarterback where you watch him play and say, you know what?
- 28:39SPEAKER_00: Shit, there might, there actually might be something here.
- 28:42SPEAKER_00: That's hard.
- 28:44SPEAKER_00: You don't just throw that away because there's another exciting prospect entering the league.
- 28:50SPEAKER_00: Jackson Dart showed you enough.
- 28:53SPEAKER_00: You know, he showed you something as a rookie.
- 28:56SPEAKER_00: He showed you something in week one in Dallas where you never beat the Cowboys week one, and he went out there and killed it.
- 29:05SPEAKER_00: You gotta let the kid develop.
- 29:07SPEAKER_00: You gotta let the kid come back.
- 29:09SPEAKER_00: Let him answer this question.
- 29:11SPEAKER_00: The Giants have enough uncertainty already.
- 29:14SPEAKER_00: Don't create more uncertainty bullshit because everybody wants the next shiny toy.
- 29:20SPEAKER_00: And unfortunately, this Giants conversation isn't going away because week three is actually really interesting now.
- 29:25SPEAKER_00: So let's move forward.
- 29:27SPEAKER_00: Let's look forward.
- 29:28SPEAKER_00: Let's get into some games for week three.
- 29:32SPEAKER_00: Some of them have some good baked-in storylines.
- 29:36SPEAKER_00: Some of them could look completely different depending on who actually suits up.
- 29:41SPEAKER_00: And with the uh the injury bug hitting every team, it seems like.
- 29:46SPEAKER_00: That's going to be something we're dealing with all season.
- 29:48SPEAKER_00: Great for great for my fantasy teams.
- 29:52SPEAKER_00: So I got four games for you.
- 29:53SPEAKER_00: And these these aren't the only four games that are good, but these are the four that I'm actually pretty interested in.
- 30:00SPEAKER_00: And the first one, sticking with the Giants.
- 30:04SPEAKER_00: Well, guess who's coming back to MetLife?
- 30:08SPEAKER_00: Big bad Brian Dayball.
- 30:11SPEAKER_00: The former Giants head coach, the savior of the franchise after Joe Judge and whatever carousel coach they brought in, comes back to MetLife to try and beat his former team.
- 30:25SPEAKER_00: So imagine this.
- 30:27SPEAKER_00: Giants lose Dart, who Dayball couldn't wait to get in.
- 30:32SPEAKER_00: Monday night was a disaster.
- 30:34SPEAKER_00: Jameis looks terrible.
- 30:37SPEAKER_00: And then Brian Dayball comes back to MetLife and beats you.
- 30:42SPEAKER_00: Good luck listening to New York Sports Radio on Monday morning.
- 30:46SPEAKER_00: That's gonna be Chef's kiss.
- 30:49SPEAKER_00: Pleasant experience.
- 30:51SPEAKER_00: The other thing is Tennessee is not some automatic win here.
- 30:54SPEAKER_00: They just gave Philly everything they could handle.
- 30:57SPEAKER_00: So I don't want to hear, oh, it's the Titans.
- 30:59SPEAKER_00: No, man.
- 31:00SPEAKER_00: This is uh this is Sunday football.
- 31:03SPEAKER_00: Any given Sunday, right?
- 31:04SPEAKER_00: You're playing a football team that can make your life difficult.
- 31:07SPEAKER_00: And the Giants are pretty banged up themselves.
- 31:09SPEAKER_00: Brian Burns, Malik Neighbors, Andrew Thomas, all big names worth mentioning.
- 31:15SPEAKER_00: On the other side, Tennessee has, well, they have some running backs banged up too, but the rosters we think we're getting on Sunday might not be the exact rosters we actually walk onto the field with.
- 31:26SPEAKER_00: And this is where John Harbaugh becomes really important.
- 31:29SPEAKER_00: This is why you hired the veteran coach to stabilize the building.
- 31:34SPEAKER_00: Your young quarterback is gone.
- 31:36SPEAKER_00: Your team just got embarrassed on national television.
- 31:40SPEAKER_00: Get everybody back on track.
- 31:41SPEAKER_00: Get everybody back to zero.
- 31:43SPEAKER_00: Tell them things are going to be okay and make them actually believe it.
- 31:48SPEAKER_00: Because if the Giants start losing to Tennessee, then Arizona, then some of these games we uh we came into the season saying they should win.
- 32:01SPEAKER_00: That grill under John Harbaugh's ass gets turned up very quickly.
- 32:06SPEAKER_00: Especially in this town.
- 32:08SPEAKER_00: I guess we'll we'll just keep it local while we're here, too.
- 32:11SPEAKER_00: Got a preview of the Jets at Lions game.
- 32:15SPEAKER_00: Look, man, for the Jets, and it's it this is simple, right?
- 32:19SPEAKER_00: Show me that the defense is real.
- 32:22SPEAKER_00: Not that you just played in uh an unprepared Tennessee team week one and had the crowd at your back at home against the Packers.
- 32:34SPEAKER_00: You looked pretty legitimate against Tennessee.
- 32:37SPEAKER_00: You looked pretty legitimate against Green Bay.
- 32:40SPEAKER_00: Now you got a different animal against Detroit.
- 32:43SPEAKER_00: And I just watched Detroit put 31 points up on Buffalo.
- 32:48SPEAKER_00: Goff is playing well to say the least, and they have weapons everywhere.
- 32:54SPEAKER_00: This is the test.
- 32:56SPEAKER_00: Can you pressure Goff?
- 32:57SPEAKER_00: Can you make him uncomfortable?
- 32:59SPEAKER_00: Can somebody please intercept a football?
- 33:03SPEAKER_00: And honestly, offensively, can you just help the defense out?
- 33:07SPEAKER_00: Can you keep their offense off the field?
- 33:09SPEAKER_00: Can we get, you know, four yards in a cloud of dust, right?
- 33:13SPEAKER_00: Can we run the ball well?
- 33:16SPEAKER_00: I don't want to watch the Jets defense keep playing great football, and then the offense goes three and out, three and out, three and out, and eventually the defense breaks.
- 33:24SPEAKER_00: Maybe can we get back into some of that heavier personnel that we saw in week one?
- 33:29SPEAKER_00: Can we also just play clean football?
- 33:32SPEAKER_00: Can we clean the penalties up a little bit?
- 33:34SPEAKER_00: You're not going into Detroit and committing 13 penalties and winning.
- 33:38SPEAKER_00: It's really that honest to God simple.
- 33:41SPEAKER_00: As of Wednesday, Minka Fitzpatrick wasn't practicing.
- 33:45SPEAKER_00: Mason Taylor wasn't practicing.
- 33:47SPEAKER_00: Detroit also has several linemen banged up.
- 33:50SPEAKER_00: So if that continues throughout the week, suddenly the Jets pass rush versus a beat-up Detroit offense line makes a little bit for more of a storyline, but David Bailey, man, look, here's your opportunity.
- 34:04SPEAKER_00: You look good through two weeks.
- 34:06SPEAKER_00: Go make Jared Goff miserable.
- 34:10SPEAKER_00: I'm not putting this in the Jets have to win category.
- 34:13SPEAKER_00: I'm not doing that.
- 34:14SPEAKER_00: I don't.
- 34:15SPEAKER_00: We all thought they might even start 0-4.
- 34:17SPEAKER_00: So if they can squeak this one out, that's great.
- 34:19SPEAKER_00: If they can't, then so be it.
- 34:22SPEAKER_00: But just stand up, man.
- 34:23SPEAKER_00: Don't get pushed around.
- 34:24SPEAKER_00: Don't get beat up.
- 34:25SPEAKER_00: Don't get blown out 45 to 5, uh three.
- 34:28SPEAKER_00: You know, like don't don't embarrass yourself.
- 34:33SPEAKER_00: You lose a close one, fine.
- 34:35SPEAKER_00: But they did just lose a close one and it didn't look good.
- 34:39SPEAKER_00: We'll see how it goes.
- 34:41SPEAKER_00: What else do I have circled here?
- 34:43SPEAKER_00: What other games do I have here?
- 34:45SPEAKER_00: Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 34:46SPEAKER_00: Raiders, Saints.
- 34:49SPEAKER_00: The wait a second, are these teams actually kind of interesting game?
- 34:53SPEAKER_00: Vegas, 2-0.
- 34:56SPEAKER_00: New Orleans just went into Baltimore and did the damn thing.
- 35:01SPEAKER_00: I did not really expect this to be an interesting game three weeks ago, but here we are.
- 35:08SPEAKER_00: Vegas looks organized, cousins look comfortable.
- 35:12SPEAKER_00: Shuck looks like he has it.
- 35:14SPEAKER_00: There's a town around him.
- 35:17SPEAKER_00: But can you please start playing football before halftime?
- 35:22SPEAKER_00: That's really all I ask.
- 35:24SPEAKER_00: I'd love to see a shootout between these two.
- 35:27SPEAKER_00: And last but not least for my must-watch games of week three.
- 35:35SPEAKER_00: You got Texans at Colts.
- 35:38SPEAKER_00: And I know what you're thinking.
- 35:41SPEAKER_00: Both 0 2 teams?
- 35:43SPEAKER_00: Yeah, well, somebody's leaving 0-3.
- 35:45SPEAKER_00: And that's the full storyline.
- 35:48SPEAKER_00: I don't need you to give 17 historical statistics about how difficult it is to make the playoffs at 0-3.
- 35:54SPEAKER_00: We all know it's bad.
- 35:56SPEAKER_00: You don't want to be 0-3.
- 35:59SPEAKER_00: Houston looked explosive week one.
- 36:02SPEAKER_00: Week two, they score six points.
- 36:05SPEAKER_00: CJ Stroud did not look good.
- 36:08SPEAKER_00: The run game didn't do anything.
- 36:09SPEAKER_00: And Nico Collins is already dealing with a hamstring issue.
- 36:13SPEAKER_00: So if he's limited, he doesn't play.
- 36:15SPEAKER_00: Obviously that changes the entire offense, right?
- 36:18SPEAKER_00: Indy, meanwhile, also 0-2, just walked into Arrowhead and almost beat Kansas City.
- 36:25SPEAKER_00: So this isn't exactly some rollover dead Colts team.
- 36:29SPEAKER_00: Jonathan Taylor is that dude.
- 36:31SPEAKER_00: I can't tell you guys enough.
- 36:34SPEAKER_00: He means business.
- 36:38SPEAKER_00: What I want to see more is which team handles desperation better.
- 36:41SPEAKER_00: Because whoever loses this game, Monday morning, we're no longer talking about a slow start.
- 36:47SPEAKER_00: We're talking about a season that's already in serious trouble.
- 36:51SPEAKER_00: Now, before I get you out of here, and thank you for listening, by the way.
- 36:58SPEAKER_00: It's a little segment called Rolling the Dice with Rice.
- 37:03SPEAKER_00: We did it all year last year.
- 37:05SPEAKER_00: We do it for future bets all the time.
- 37:09SPEAKER_00: I gotta take a tiny little victory lap here, man.
- 37:12SPEAKER_00: My picks have been cooking the last week.
- 37:17SPEAKER_00: Week two, I went five for five on the Thursday night game.
- 37:20SPEAKER_00: And then the Giants-Rams game, I went three for four, but really I went three for three because Jackson Dark got voided.
- 37:28SPEAKER_00: So officially, through week two, eight wins, zero losses, one void.
- 37:35SPEAKER_00: Ooh, ooh, ooh, you love it.
- 37:38SPEAKER_00: I also did uh pretty good week one, too, but you know, that's a different story.
- 37:46SPEAKER_00: Thursday night, Atlanta heading into Green Bay.
- 37:51SPEAKER_00: And this game is actually more interesting than people think because I know we just spent time talking about how completely broken Atlanta's offense has looked, but Michael Pannox is coming back.
- 38:06SPEAKER_00: Now, look, he's not Tom Brady or anything, but the offense is hopefully going to start resembling what we expected.
- 38:15SPEAKER_00: You still got Bichan, you still got Pitts, you still got London.
- 38:20SPEAKER_00: So on the pod, I've got two plays that I'm gonna give out.
- 38:26SPEAKER_00: The first one, Falcons, Packers over 42 and a half.
- 38:32SPEAKER_00: That's the number I got it at.
- 38:34SPEAKER_00: I think Atlanta is capable of finally contributing to one of these games offensively.
- 38:39SPEAKER_00: And with Penix back and Green Bay being able to score whenever they kind of want.
- 38:45SPEAKER_00: I love the over on a Thursday night.
- 38:48SPEAKER_00: And then the other one I love, Bichon Robinson, over 120 rushing and receiving yards.
- 38:58SPEAKER_00: If Atlanta is going to move the football, Bichan is going to be a massive part of it.
- 39:03SPEAKER_00: Plain and simple.
- 39:04SPEAKER_00: So run game, check down, screens, get him in space, whatever it takes.
- 39:10SPEAKER_00: He is their best offensive player, so make sure you use him like it.
- 39:16SPEAKER_00: Those are gonna be the two that I give that I'm gonna give you here.
- 39:20SPEAKER_00: Okay.
- 39:21SPEAKER_00: I've been putting out a more detailed card on Instagram.
- 39:26SPEAKER_00: So that's Rice on the Radio at Instagram.
- 39:29SPEAKER_00: Check out the stories, DM me if you want some of the picks, whatever.
- 39:32SPEAKER_00: Everything's free.
- 39:32SPEAKER_00: I don't care.
- 39:33SPEAKER_00: I'm not making money off picks.
- 39:34SPEAKER_00: Who the hell am I anyway?
- 39:36SPEAKER_00: But uh those are the two for the pod.
- 39:39SPEAKER_00: Thanks for listening.
- 39:40SPEAKER_00: I'll give you a couple, a couple other deep cuts uh tomorrow or today, I guess.
- 39:46SPEAKER_00: Whenever this, whenever you hear this episode, Thursday.
- 39:48SPEAKER_00: And then I'll uh I'll also make sure to give you out a bigger card for Sunday, too.
- 39:54SPEAKER_00: So make sure you're sticking around on the Instagram in.
- 39:58SPEAKER_00: But yeah, that's uh that's gonna do it for me.
- 40:01SPEAKER_00: Quick little quick little roll in the dice corner.
- 40:03SPEAKER_00: Week two was weird.
- 40:06SPEAKER_00: Week three has some pretty interesting tests coming up, especially locally.
- 40:14SPEAKER_00: Jets, you know, just prove the defense is real against Detroit.
- 40:19SPEAKER_00: Against a high-powered offense.
- 40:20SPEAKER_00: Prove you can stop them.
- 40:22SPEAKER_00: And for the Giants, you gotta show me that John Harbaugh can steady the ship without Jackson Dart.
- 40:32SPEAKER_00: But here we are.
- 40:34SPEAKER_00: As always, make sure you're following the show everywhere you listen.
- 40:38SPEAKER_00: It's at Rice on the Radio.
- 40:40SPEAKER_00: Wherever you like to do scroll, whether it be Instagram or TikTok or YouTube or Facebook for God's sakes.
- 40:48SPEAKER_00: It's also at Rice on the Radio.
- 40:50SPEAKER_00: Put everything you see on here, on there.
- 40:53SPEAKER_00: Give it a follow.
- 40:54SPEAKER_00: Say hi.
- 40:55SPEAKER_00: Send me a meme.
