- 0:10Hello friends. It's Sean here and it is the
- 0:1430th of August, which makes it this year a Friday and well done
- 0:19to you. Well done.
- 0:20You've made it to the end of another week.
- 0:23And here we stand at the precipice of the weekend.
- 0:26But also this is a pretty cool day.
- 0:30Did you know that 79 years ago something was born, something
- 0:34very exciting, something that you have probably played with at
- 0:37one point in your life? The Slinky.
- 0:40Yep, those big old springs. I didn't realise this, but it
- 0:44was actually an engineer from the Navy who was aboard his
- 0:48ship. His name was Richard.
- 0:49He was aboard his ship and as he was working, he bumped one of
- 0:54the large springs on his desk and it went from that book down
- 0:58onto another book, down onto his desk, down onto the ground and
- 1:01then just landed there. He looked down and he thought,
- 1:04well, that was fun. And after the war finished, he
- 1:08continued to develop to find just the right shape, size and,
- 1:14well, I don't know all the different variations and factors
- 1:17that you can adjust in the way that a spring functions.
- 1:19But he played around with them, and he came up with this
- 1:22crackerjack design. And of course, none of the toy
- 1:25shops are interested. They thought, this is a bit of a
- 1:27useless toy. It's just a large spring.
- 1:29Until one day, he got 400 of them made, and he showed them
- 1:33off at a toy fair. And within an hour and a half,
- 1:36he had sold out. And, well, the rest is history.
- 1:3979 years. Today the Slinky was born.
- 1:43So if you've got an old slinky sitting in a cupboard somewhere
- 1:45at your place, pull it out, make some books into a bit of a tower
- 1:49and give you a slinky a go. Or if you've got a staircase,
- 1:52that makes your life even easier.
- 1:54So Slinky day may come and go. And while 79 years sounds like a
- 1:59long time, it's a whole lot further back than that that we
- 2:04are going to join in with the psalmist as he writes another
- 2:07song for pilgrims ascending to Jerusalem.
- 2:11We are going to continue that journey up toward that mountain,
- 2:14up toward that city where our God dwells.
- 2:18You ready? Yep, me too.
- 2:20Let us read together Psalm 129. From my earliest youth, my
- 2:36enemies have persecuted me. Let all Israel repeat this.
- 2:42From my earliest youth my enemies have persecuted me, but
- 2:47they have never defeated me. My back is covered with cuts, as
- 2:52if a farmer had ploughed long furrows.
- 2:57But the Lord is good. He has cut me free from the
- 3:01ropes of the ungodly. May all who hate Jerusalem be
- 3:06turned back in shameful defeat. May they be as useless as grass
- 3:12on a rooftop, turning yellow when only half grown, ignored by
- 3:17the harvester, despised by the binder.
- 3:21And may those who pass by refuse to give them this blessing.
- 3:26The Lord bless you. We bless you in the Lord's name.
- 3:39Ah, Lord, The psalmist acknowledges what is true for
- 3:42many of us, and that is that life can be complicated and
- 3:47difficult sometimes as we do our best to serve you because living
- 3:52in a way that honours you just seems like foolishness in this
- 3:56world. And Lord, even as our backs are
- 3:59covered in cuts, as we push toward you, despite the
- 4:06criticisms of the world around us, Lord, help us remember that
- 4:10of course, this world is not for you, but we are for you.
- 4:15And that we do not set our eyes on the prizes around us in this
- 4:19world, but we set our eyes further to the eternal prize
- 4:24that rests in you, our loving, saving God, who is going to take
- 4:30this old body and resurrect it with the new one where we will
- 4:34live with you forever. And that, that is something we
- 4:39look forward to that perfect day of being united with you.
- 4:45So as we live this life of challenge, Lord, continue to
- 4:48lift our eyes to you, our real prize and the goal that we're
- 4:52striving for. And we pray all of this in your
- 4:56saving, encouraging, and emboldening name Jesus, Amen.
