- 0:00- This is Scott Becker with the Becker's Healthcare
- 0:02- podcast.
- 0:04- Today, we're gonna cover five stories that we're
- 0:06- following at Becker's Healthcare and that have impact
- 0:09- on the healthcare marketplace and industry.
- 0:12- The first story is
- 0:13- more insurers are exiting Medicare Advantage.
- 0:16- At the end of the day, and I
- 0:18- know some people will take offense to this,
- 0:19- but only theoretical types and those that are
- 0:22- making money from it seem to love Medicare
- 0:24- Advantage. And I know that's an overstatement.
- 0:27- Today's article by Jacob Everson, we had a
- 0:29- podcast on this as well, seven more health
- 0:31- system owned insurers exiting Medicare Advantage.
- 0:34- And then some of the big plans are
- 0:36- scaling back on Medicare Advantage as well.
- 0:39- Not to even mention that on the other
- 0:41- side of the table, a lot of hospitals
- 0:43- and health systems
- 0:45- really dislike
- 0:46- contracting with Medicare Advantage plans.
- 0:49- Second,
- 0:50- trial begins now for Yale New Haven's older
- 0:53- physician cognitive test policy.
- 0:56- The the testing that Yale New Haven has,
- 0:59- which is similar at lots of other places
- 1:01- and companies and systems,
- 1:02- is that at 70 years old, a physician,
- 1:04- he has to take a cognitive test to
- 1:06- make sure they could keep on practicing.
- 1:08- And this was challenged by the Equal Employment
- 1:11- Opportunity Commission that brought action against Young Living
- 1:14- Health.
- 1:15- This is a fascinating situation as a larger
- 1:18- and larger percentage of physicians are 65 and
- 1:20- older,
- 1:21- and everyone hates to be tested as a
- 1:24- prerequisite to keeping their license. At the same
- 1:26- time, of course,
- 1:27- nobody wants somebody that's out of it doing
- 1:30- their surgery or taking care of them. So
- 1:32- fasting, fasting issue with lots of different issues.
- 1:35- Third, there's an article today
- 1:38- by Scott King
- 1:39- on how 10 health care COOs
- 1:42- and strategic leaders are watching how AI is
- 1:45- changing their roles. What I think is fascinating
- 1:47- here as opposed to some physician societies that
- 1:49- have been quite negative about the use of
- 1:51- AI in medicine,
- 1:53- this article talks about many leaders being quite
- 1:56- pleased
- 1:57- with where AI is helping
- 1:59- and helping to streamline some of the things
- 2:02- that they're doing. So a really interesting article.
- 2:05- Fourth, an article on physician compensation,
- 2:08- and this is based on a white paper
- 2:10- from AMN Healthcare. It was in the staffing
- 2:13- business. It says, essentially, the average starting salaries...
- 2:17- The starting salary for all physicians
- 2:19- hit 4 to 19,000
- 2:21- in 2025
- 2:22- to 2026
- 2:24- according to the white paper.
- 2:26- Now now, again, a lot of specialists make
- 2:28- a lot more than that. The primary care
- 2:29- earnings were less than that, but the average
- 2:32- moved up to 420,000.
- 2:34- As we have less and less physicians, this
- 2:36- is gonna be a challenge, and you're naturally
- 2:37- gonna see some of these numbers go up.
- 2:40- We're willfully out of balance on the number
- 2:42- of physicians needed versus numbers we have.
- 2:45- Finally, fifth,
- 2:47- we we did a quasi op ed today
- 2:49- on needing more physicians,
- 2:51- and some of the professional societies
- 2:53- really
- 2:54- seemingly not behind that effort.
- 2:57- Right now, it takes four years of college,
- 2:59- four years of medical school, four years of
- 3:01- residency and fellowship to become a physician.
- 3:03- There's no wonder
- 3:05- it's become extremely expensive and inefficient to create
- 3:08- doctors.
- 3:09- It's become harder and harder to constantly track
- 3:11- the best and brightest to medicine. We've gotta
- 3:14- figure out a way to fix that pathway.
- 3:16- That is just a problem.
- 3:18- You also have, a bunch of the physician
- 3:21- societies recently released a release
- 3:23- sort of cautioning on the use of AI
- 3:25- in health care. It's not that I agree
- 3:28- or disagree, but it seems so much part
- 3:30- of the territorial effort of physician societies, which
- 3:33- I view as hyper problematic.
- 3:35- Thank you for listening to the Becker
- 3:37- Healthcare Podcast.
- 3:39- We hope you enjoyed this.
- 3:41- Please always feel free to let me know
- 3:43- if you enjoy it or hate it. I
- 3:44- know lots of different opinions on this issue
- 3:46- of physician training and AI medicine.
- 3:48- You you can always reach me and always
- 3:50- love to hear your comments. Thank you so
- 3:52- much for listening to the Doctors Healthcare podcast.
