• 0:23
Speaker 2: The Greek life to me gave me so much life
• 0:26
Speaker 2: in college. I still, to this day, talk to my
• 0:29
Speaker 2: sorority sister's And I just love being able to learn
• 0:33
Speaker 2: everything because in this new phase of life, I am
• 0:36
Speaker 2: the mom of a college student and a high school senior.
• 0:42
Speaker 2: She might be involved in the Greek system, and I'm
• 0:44
Speaker 2: just learning all kinds of nuggets from this podcast. So
• 0:48
Speaker 2: we're going to dive in today to talk about Parents Weekend,
• 0:53
Speaker 2: which I'm so excited about, especially because I am heading
• 0:56
Speaker 2: to Parents Weekend at CU Boulder. It is this weekend,
• 1:00
Speaker 2: and we've got a couple of college students from the
• 1:06
Speaker 2: University of And we're going to talk about what actually
• 1:11
Speaker 2: goes down when parents come into town. We're going to
• 1:14
Speaker 2: talk about the parties, the tailgates, introducing their friends to
• 1:20
Speaker 2: their family and what Parents Weekend truly looks like. So
• 1:25
Speaker 2: let's get into it. And I'd like to welcome Stassi
• 1:28
Speaker 2: and her roommate. Hi.
• 1:32
  Speaker 1: Hi, girls.
• 1:33
  Speaker 4: How are you?
• 1:34
  Speaker 5: We're good.
• 1:35
Speaker 6: How are you doing?
• 1:36
  Speaker 2: I'm good.
• 1:37
  Speaker 6: Okay.
• 1:37
Speaker 2: Tell me, is it, tell me how to pronounce your
• 1:40
Speaker 2: names and then what school you're at and what grade
• 1:43
  Speaker 2: you're in.
• 1:44
  Speaker 4: I'm Saucy.
• 1:45
  Speaker 3: I'm a senior and I'm in Calpa.
• 1:48
  Speaker 1: Okay.
• 1:49
  Speaker 4: I'm Sarah.
• 1:50
  Speaker 7: I'm a senior and I'm not in a stretch.
• 1:54
  Speaker 3: Okay.
• 1:54
  Speaker 2: No, that's great.
• 1:55
  Speaker 3: It's all good.
• 1:56
Speaker 2: Actually. I want to hear about that because I was
• 1:58
Speaker 2: just talking to our producer about how I'm going to
• 2:01
Speaker 2: parents weekend. My son is at CU Boulder and, And
• 2:03
Speaker 2: we're going this weekend and he's not in a fraternity.
• 2:08
Speaker 2: So I really want to pick your brain, especially to
• 2:12
Speaker 2: find out, you know, what you do at parents weekend
• 2:15
Speaker 2: when you're not going to parties at a fraternity or
• 2:17
  Speaker 2: sorority house.
• 2:19
  Speaker 8: Yeah.
• 2:20
  Speaker 6: You're nodding.
• 2:21
  Speaker 4: Yeah.
• 2:21
Speaker 2: So we'll get into it.
• 2:22
  Speaker 1: Okay.
• 2:23
Speaker 2: So what does a typical parent parents weekend look like
• 2:27
  Speaker 2: at UC Berkeley?
• 2:29
Speaker 1: I feel like for us, it's very much like, kind
• 2:32
Speaker 1: of babysitting and like it's a lot of like planning
• 2:35
Speaker 1: of like what's gonna happen each day like they're gonna
• 2:39
Speaker 1: come in Thursday they're gonna have to do some dinner
• 2:42
Speaker 1: of like just the two of us one day but
• 2:45
Speaker 1: then they want to meet the friends the other day
• 2:46
Speaker 1: and then it's like game day is a whole other
• 2:49
Speaker 1: whole other thing I think it's just a lot of
• 2:51
Speaker 1: planning about like which dinners we're gonna do and which
• 2:54
Speaker 1: how early we're gonna have to wake up for game
• 2:56
Speaker 1: day to start drinking and then like if they're actually
• 2:59
Speaker 1: going to make it to the football game or not.
• 3:00
Speaker 1: Cause like the dad wants to go to the football game,
• 3:02
Speaker 1: but then like the girls want to keep like partying
• 3:04
Speaker 1: at the tailgate. And like, it's just a lot of
• 3:06
Speaker 1: like rigmarole back and forth of just like, no, we're
• 3:09
  Speaker 1: going here next.
• 3:10
  Speaker 4: We're going here.
• 3:10
Speaker 3: And it's just like dragging your parents around to the
• 3:12
Speaker 3: next thing. And they just have to hang.
• 3:13
  Speaker 8: Yeah.
• 3:14
Speaker 2: Do you look forward to it? Are you stressful about,
• 3:16
Speaker 2: are you stressed about it ever? I mean, being a senior,
• 3:19
Speaker 2: you've been through it a lot. Is it a fun
• 3:22
Speaker 2: weekend for you or not so much?
• 3:24
  Speaker 4: It's fun. It's fun.
• 3:26
  Speaker 3: It's fun.
• 3:28
  Speaker 7: It's fun.
• 3:30
Speaker 1: My first time doing it, I was so stressed out,
• 3:33
Speaker 1: but I think now my brother, he also goes to
• 3:35
Speaker 1: Alabama as in a fraternity there. So this was like
• 3:37
Speaker 1: their eighth parents weekend. So at this point they're like, honestly,
• 3:40
Speaker 1: like we're just coming to see you. We don't really
• 3:42
Speaker 1: care about anything else.
• 3:44
Speaker 2: Do your parents live in California or in Bama in Alabama?
• 3:49
Speaker 1: Both our parents live in Southern California.
• 3:50
Speaker 3: So they just do the flight up to Northern California.
• 3:53
  Speaker 2: Awesome.
• 3:54
  Speaker 8: Awesome.
• 3:55
  Speaker 2: Okay.
• 3:55
Speaker 3: Tell me your story.
• 3:56
Speaker 2: No, no sorority, but parents weekend.
• 4:00
Speaker 6: Tell me how it goes.
• 4:01
Speaker 2: Like, are you as stressed out planning or are there
• 4:04
Speaker 2: as much as many activities? Tell me all the things.
• 4:08
  Speaker 7: Yes.
• 4:09
Speaker 8: So my parents aren't really big partiers, but they're down
• 4:14
Speaker 8: for whatever I'm pushing for, but there has to be
• 4:18
Speaker 8: an itinerary and there has to be an organized schedule,
• 4:22
Speaker 8: especially for my mom.
• 4:23
Speaker 2: Can I interrupt you real quick? There has to be
• 4:26
Speaker 2: an organized schedule. Are you saying, and you probably were
• 4:28
Speaker 2: going to say this, so sorry. Is it just for
• 4:31
Speaker 2: your parents or do you guys feel like there has
• 4:33
Speaker 2: to be, like everyone at school feels like there has
• 4:36
Speaker 2: to be an itinerary for parents weekend or is it
• 4:39
  Speaker 2: just your parents?
• 4:40
Speaker 7: I feel like it's a pretty universal thing.
• 4:42
Speaker 6: I feel like having parents.
• 4:43
Speaker 7: Is like you're hosting your parents.
• 4:45
  Speaker 8: There's so much expectation and there's also like I can't
• 4:49
Speaker 8: really show you how much of a degenerate I'm being.
• 4:51
Speaker 7: So I have to put a lid on it a
• 4:53
  Speaker 7: little bit.
• 4:56
  Speaker 2: Yes, that's funny.
• 4:58
Speaker 8: So you have to find that there's a good middle
• 5:00
Speaker 8: ground you got to find for sure.
• 5:02
Speaker 3: Usually start with like a breakfast.
• 5:05
  Speaker 5: Okay.
• 5:06
  Speaker 3: I'm taking notes.
• 5:07
Speaker 7: We usually start with a breakfast and then my parents
• 5:12
Speaker 7: will kind of be like, okay, like what's going to go,
• 5:14
Speaker 7: what's going to go down tomorrow.
• 5:15
Speaker 8: And we have to figure it out because I have
• 5:17
  Speaker 8: a little sister who's 13.
• 5:19
  Speaker 3: Okay.
• 5:21
  Speaker 7: Has been coming.
• 5:22
  Speaker 8: Yeah.
• 5:22
Speaker 7: And she comes every year. So we have to figure
• 5:25
Speaker 7: out what to do with her because I can't.
• 5:27
Speaker 8: Really take her to, to a frat party or a
• 5:30
Speaker 8: bar because obvious reasons. So I usually have to take
• 5:38
Speaker 8: It's usually my parents deciding which parent is going to
• 5:41
Speaker 8: sit it out and which parent's going to come with me.
• 5:43
  Speaker 3: Oh, okay.
• 5:44
Speaker 2: So they're dividing and conquering.
• 5:45
Speaker 7: Yeah, they divide and conquer for sure.
• 5:47
Speaker 8: And then my sister usually comes for like the dinner
• 5:50
Speaker 8: in between the game and then going out again.
• 5:53
  Speaker 2: Got it.
• 5:54
  Speaker 5: Yes.
• 5:55
Speaker 7: But it's always been my mom that comes with me
• 5:58
Speaker 7: and my dad will stay with my sister.
• 5:59
Speaker 5: And my mom is, for lack of better words, wonderful
• 6:08
Speaker 5: but extremely high maintenance.
• 6:10
Speaker 8: Okay so when we were younger and not being in
• 6:13
  Speaker 8: a sorority like I couldn't really get into frats I
• 6:16
Speaker 8: kind of had to like know people um so it's
• 6:20
Speaker 8: really hard to get into the parties when I was
• 6:22
Speaker 8: younger and she she'd be like wait I'm just coming
• 6:27
Speaker 8: in you're not going to tell me that I can't
• 6:29
Speaker 8: come into your room.
• 6:29
Speaker 1: You go to the frat guys and be like, I
• 6:30
Speaker 1: don't care what you guys have to say.
• 6:32
  Speaker 3: I'm getting it.
• 6:33
Speaker 4: I flew up here.
• 6:34
Speaker 3: I'm coming in here.
• 6:35
Speaker 7: She has her own bottle of gin. She's like, I
• 6:37
  Speaker 7: don't need it.
• 6:37
Speaker 6: Yes. I love her.
• 6:39
Speaker 1: Did your mom ask for, yes. She's like, I don't
• 6:43
Speaker 1: want your alcohol. I want the clean alcohol. That's like
• 6:45
Speaker 1: in the back somewhere. My mom's she's gone.
• 6:48
Speaker 3: And I'm like, where is she?
• 6:49
Speaker 8: She's at the bar talking to like probably some pledges.
• 6:53
Speaker 8: And she comes back over with, like a drink with
• 6:56
Speaker 8: ice in her drink. And there's like a little umbrella.
• 6:59
Speaker 8: And I'm like, mom, where in the world did you like?
• 7:02
Speaker 8: She's like, oh, he went downstairs to get me a
• 7:05
Speaker 8: drink with some ice.
• 7:07
  Speaker 3: Well, it can.
• 7:08
Speaker 7: She's like, don't bring me anything open.
• 7:11
  Speaker 4: Oh my gosh.
• 7:13
Speaker 1: There's one frat that does mimosas in the morning. So
• 7:15
Speaker 1: everyone goes to the mimosas and she goes, I want
• 7:18
  Speaker 1: one mimosa, but.
• 7:20
Speaker 3: Hold the orange juice. That's my mother.
• 7:24
  Speaker 2: Yes.
• 7:26
  Speaker 8: Yes.
• 7:28
Speaker 2: I love your mother.
• 7:30
  Speaker 4: I cannot.
• 7:31
Speaker 6: I'm not going out after.
• 7:32
Speaker 3: This is the main event.
• 7:33
Speaker 7: You're not going to see me again.
• 7:34
Speaker 3: The parents will check out. They'll be like, I'm done.
• 7:38
Speaker 4: My day is done.
• 7:39
Speaker 6: You guys made me start at 8 a.m. I'm done.
• 7:43
Speaker 3: They're like, I'm getting rid of you now. I'm over you.
• 7:45
Speaker 7: I've got to go lay down.
• 7:46
  Speaker 3: I have other.
• 7:46
Speaker 4: Things I need to do.
• 7:48
  Speaker 5: Okay.
• 7:48
Speaker 2: So tell me when she enters the fraternity houses, does
• 7:52
Speaker 2: it work? Like she gets up there and she's like.
• 7:54
  Speaker 6: I'm coming in.
• 7:56
  Speaker 2: I love her.
• 7:59
Speaker 7: And sometimes I'll be like, wait, like, who are you?
• 8:02
Speaker 7: She goes, who are you?
• 8:03
  Speaker 3: I'm going.
• 8:06
Speaker 1: Also the frats love nothing more than a hot mom.
• 8:10
Speaker 1: Like they, that is what they're going for the entire weekend.
• 8:14
Speaker 1: They don't care about the dads. They don't care about
• 8:16
Speaker 1: the sorority girls that they see every single weekend. They
• 8:18
Speaker 1: want hot moms at the, frat parties.
• 8:20
  Speaker 3: They've got banners.
• 8:22
  Speaker 8: Yeah.
• 8:22
  Speaker 7: They've got banners.
• 8:23
  Speaker 2: That say what?
• 8:24
  Speaker 6: Oh my gosh.
• 8:25
  Speaker 3: I don't even know.
• 8:26
Speaker 6: It'll be like hot moms drink for free. Like dad's
• 8:29
  Speaker 6: giving me.
• 8:30
Speaker 2: Oh, okay. That's so funny. Okay. So yes, we're talking
• 8:35
Speaker 2: all frat parties, but from the perspective, since you're not
• 8:38
Speaker 2: in a sorority, do you feel like there are other
• 8:42
Speaker 2: activities that you can do that are not involved in
• 8:46
Speaker 2: the Greek system? I mean, I know this is the
• 8:47
Speaker 2: dirty rush podcast. but I want to talk truly about
• 8:51
Speaker 2: all things Parents Weekend and does it have to include
• 8:55
  Speaker 2: fraternity parties?
• 8:57
Speaker 8: No, my mom loves to hit the student store first
• 9:00
Speaker 8: and get her outfit set.
• 9:01
  Speaker 2: Yes, of course.
• 9:02
Speaker 8: And then we have a tailgate at one of our
• 9:06
Speaker 8: like little hotel things that graduate and.
• 9:08
Speaker 6: We call it Henry's.
• 9:10
Speaker 8: She loves to go there and get her signature drink,
• 9:14
Speaker 8: which is a golden bear. And then she'll be like,
• 9:17
Speaker 8: this is way too strong.
• 9:19
  Speaker 3: You're insane.
• 9:20
Speaker 6: And then she'll give.
• 9:21
Speaker 8: It to me and then I'll have to finish it.
• 9:24
Speaker 8: And then she's like, why are you so hammered?
• 9:26
  Speaker 4: I'm like, I don't know.
• 9:27
Speaker 7: I've had to finish.
• 9:28
Speaker 2: You're like mom because all your drinks are pure vodka.
• 9:31
Speaker 6: All your mimosas, no orange juice.
• 9:34
Speaker 7: Like I've had to drink after you're done with it.
• 9:37
  Speaker 1: Right.
• 9:37
  Speaker 6: Yeah.
• 9:37
Speaker 8: So that's like the main event now and has been
• 9:41
Speaker 8: usually just because it's easier to maneuver with my mom. Yeah.
• 9:45
  Speaker 2: Got it.
• 9:46
Speaker 7: No, she doesn't get it.
• 9:47
Speaker 8: She gets hot and there's lots of things you've taken
• 9:49
  Speaker 8: attention to.
• 9:50
Speaker 2: Oh, believe me. I get it. I am a menopausal woman.
• 9:53
Speaker 2: So getting hot and being comfortable are all, you know,
• 10:00
  Speaker 2: I understand.
• 10:01
  Speaker 4: Okay.
• 10:02
Speaker 2: So have you ever, has she, or have you ever
• 10:05
Speaker 2: noticed any other parents who have gotten a little too
• 10:08
Speaker 2: drunk for parents weekend?
• 10:09
  Speaker 7: Yes, we have.
• 10:11
  Speaker 6: Yeah.
• 10:11
  Speaker 2: Tell me stories.
• 10:13
Speaker 8: My mom, well, we've seen parents like dancing and getting
• 10:19
Speaker 8: down and doing on top of bars and standing on
• 10:23
Speaker 8: bars and doing kickstands.
• 10:25
Speaker 7: And my mother will just be with her. She'll be like,
• 10:28
Speaker 7: can you believe that they're doing this right now?
• 10:31
Speaker 6: Like, can you imagine if I did that?
• 10:34
Speaker 7: I was like, mom, you should do it.
• 10:35
  Speaker 8: Like, go.
• 10:37
Speaker 6: Do the kickstand. Do the kickstand.
• 10:39
Speaker 3: Go dance up on the platform.
• 10:40
  Speaker 6: That's what you're here for.
• 10:42
  Speaker 2: Go do it.
• 10:43
Speaker 6: Do the damn thing.
• 10:45
Speaker 7: And she's like, Sarah, I have to.
• 10:50
Speaker 1: We had one friend whose mom was so adamant on
• 10:55
Speaker 1: going to the bar after the game. And the daughter
• 10:58
Speaker 1: was like, mom, like, honestly, like, I don't even really
• 11:00
Speaker 1: want to go out. Like, I'm tired all day. And
• 11:02
Speaker 1: she's like, no, we have to go out. Like, we
• 11:05
Speaker 1: have to go. Like, we have like this like raunchy
• 11:08
Speaker 1: dive bar called Kip's. And it's just like a joke
• 11:11
Speaker 1: of like a place kind of. But she's like, we
• 11:13
Speaker 1: have to go to Kip's tonight.
• 11:14
  Speaker 4: Like, we're going.
• 11:14
Speaker 3: And the daughter was like, no, we're not. Like, write
• 11:18
  Speaker 3: it in.
• 11:20
Speaker 6: Uh, yeah, I love it.
• 11:22
Speaker 2: I love that this, the roles, it seems to be reversed.
• 11:26
Speaker 2: Like you guys are taking care of your parents now
• 11:28
  Speaker 2: at parents weekend.
• 11:32
  Speaker 6: Okay.
• 11:32
Speaker 2: Have you ever had an experience of someone of your
• 11:35
Speaker 2: parents accidentally finding out something that you might not? you
• 11:39
Speaker 2: might not have been sharing with them, like whether it
• 11:42
Speaker 2: was somebody you were dating or, Oh, I think Sarah
• 11:45
  Speaker 2: has something. Yeah.
• 11:48
Speaker 1: We had like, it was, it first started by, we
• 11:52
Speaker 1: were at, At the tailgate thing, that's where you like
• 11:55
  Speaker 1: actually see everyone.
• 11:56
Speaker 3: Cause not everyone goes to the frats, especially when we're
• 11:58
Speaker 3: old and we're seniors. It's like, eh, like you really
• 12:00
Speaker 3: still go into the frat parties.
• 12:01
  Speaker 2: Yeah. Yeah.
• 12:02
Speaker 1: So everyone's like, we're going to meet at the tailgate.
• 12:04
Speaker 1: So that's where you start seeing everyone and everyone starts
• 12:07
Speaker 1: saying hi. Now it's one thing to have just your
• 12:09
Speaker 1: mom with you because your mom's like the girl's girl.
• 12:11
Speaker 3: She like knows all the ends. She knows all the
• 12:13
Speaker 3: boys that you've talked to.
• 12:14
Speaker 1: It's another thing I will say in a different ballad,
• 12:17
Speaker 1: have your dad there because he's like, who the hell
• 12:20
Speaker 1: is this guy talking to my daughter and slurring his
• 12:24
  Speaker 1: words and.
• 12:24
  Speaker 2: Dah, dah, dah.
• 12:25
  Speaker 6: Yeah.
• 12:26
Speaker 1: And I had one of my really good guy friends
• 12:29
Speaker 1: come over to me and he were trotting it up.
• 12:33
Speaker 3: And my dad was like, who's this guy? And I
• 12:35
Speaker 3: was like, Oh, like, this is my friend.
• 12:37
Speaker 1: Like, He plays for this team at the school.
• 12:39
Speaker 3: And he goes, yeah, my, my daughter, she's not allowed
• 12:41
Speaker 3: to date you kind of athletes. I know a lot
• 12:43
Speaker 3: of those kinds of athletes. She's not allowed to date you.
• 12:44
Speaker 3: And I was like, Oh no.
• 12:47
Speaker 1: I was like, I'm my mom was like, stay in
• 12:49
Speaker 1: your lane, get out of here. And then he turns
• 12:52
Speaker 1: to Sarah and was like, does she like him?
• 12:55
  Speaker 2: Yeah.
• 12:56
  Speaker 4: What's the deal?
• 12:56
Speaker 3: What's the deal? And then I get out of the conversation.
• 12:59
Speaker 3: I was like, no, actually she likes him. And my
• 13:02
Speaker 3: dad was like, Oh, and then later that.
• 13:05
Speaker 8: Night, Later that night, I took my mom out to
• 13:09
Speaker 8: the bars because she left us.
• 13:11
Speaker 3: She was like, I'm going home. I don't know what
• 13:12
Speaker 3: you think. I don't know who you think I am.
• 13:14
  Speaker 6: Yeah.
• 13:14
Speaker 7: She was like, I'll meet you guys out. So she
• 13:16
Speaker 7: meets us out and we go to the bar.
• 13:20
  Speaker 3: And she's everywhere.
• 13:21
Speaker 7: I'll turn and she's gone. And she's with me.
• 13:26
Speaker 8: And she kind of knows what's going on because we've, like,
• 13:28
Speaker 8: been talking for a second.
• 13:30
Speaker 7: And I kind of point him out.
• 13:31
Speaker 3: I'm like, oh, there he is.
• 13:33
  Speaker 6: Uh-oh.
• 13:35
  Speaker 7: She walks.
• 13:36
Speaker 2: She beelines right to him.
• 13:37
Speaker 6: He beelines for him.
• 13:40
Speaker 8: Like he's carrying a football and she's going to make,
• 13:43
Speaker 8: I don't even, it was unlike anything I've ever seen.
• 13:46
Speaker 7: I don't even know how she got there. I like
• 13:48
Speaker 7: slipped in front of him. She's shaking his hand.
• 13:52
Speaker 8: I don't even think he knows who she is. He's
• 13:55
Speaker 8: this random mother is like, right.
• 13:57
Speaker 7: To me and introducing herself. Who are you? So I
• 14:00
Speaker 7: was like, Oh my gosh, no, no.
• 14:04
Speaker 8: No, no, no, no, no. So I try and make
• 14:08
Speaker 8: my way over there. And by the time I get
• 14:10
Speaker 8: over there, she's already coming back to me and meeting
• 14:14
Speaker 8: me in the middle. And she goes, you know, I'm just.
• 14:18
Speaker 7: Going to go home. I'm going to go home right now.
• 14:20
Speaker 7: And I was like, Oh, like why you didn't like
• 14:22
Speaker 7: talking to him? She was like, no, I'm going to
• 14:24
Speaker 7: let you do your thing.
• 14:26
Speaker 3: Um, and we'll talk tomorrow.
• 14:28
Speaker 2: Okay, so what did you take from that? Do you
• 14:31
Speaker 2: think that she was giving you the seal of approval?
• 14:34
Speaker 3: She was not a fan, apparently.
• 14:36
  Speaker 2: Not a fan.
• 14:37
  Speaker 5: Yeah.
• 14:37
Speaker 7: In the 20 seconds, she introduced herself. And then I
• 14:41
Speaker 7: made it back to her. I was like, oh, like,
• 14:43
Speaker 7: that was my mom.
• 14:43
Speaker 4: He goes, oh, I know.
• 14:46
  Speaker 6: She's like, I'm her mom.
• 14:48
  Speaker 7: I'm Sarah's mom.
• 14:50
Speaker 6: Nice to meet you.
• 14:51
Speaker 3: I was like, oh, I'm mortified.
• 14:53
Speaker 7: But that's great. Did she like.
• 14:54
  Speaker 3: Yeah.
• 14:55
Speaker 8: He's like, I don't really think she... Liked me, though.
• 14:59
Speaker 8: I don't think that went too great. Oh, no.
• 15:02
Speaker 2: Is it someone you're still dating? No.
• 15:05
  Speaker 5: No.
• 15:14
Speaker 6: You know, your exes will kind of like wave to
• 15:16
  Speaker 6: your mom.
• 15:17
Speaker 1: Maybe, maybe someone will come up. It's just like, Oh God, like.
• 15:21
Speaker 3: You're really putting a face to everyone's name now at
• 15:23
  Speaker 3: this point.
• 15:24
Speaker 2: Yeah, totally. I mean, isn't that part of the parents weekend?
• 15:29
Speaker 2: You know, we get to like come and see part
• 15:32
Speaker 2: of your life and experience it with you. So I'm
• 15:36
Speaker 2: excited for it. I'm so excited that you guys got
• 15:38
Speaker 2: to come on the podcast and share your stories. Thanks
• 15:40
Speaker 2: so much for being here, you guys. And have fun
• 15:43
  Speaker 2: at school.
• 15:44
  Speaker 3: Thanks.
• 15:45
  Speaker 6: Bye.
• 15:46
  Speaker 4: Bye, guys.
• 16:02
Speaker 2: Next, we're bringing in Avery and Julia. They are also
• 16:05
Speaker 2: from UC Berkeley, and they're going to share some really
• 16:07
Speaker 2: fun stories about Parents Weekend that they've experienced. Hi, girls.
• 16:12
  Speaker 2: How are you?
• 16:13
  Speaker 6: Good.
• 16:15
Speaker 4: Marinating our big day.
• 16:16
  Speaker 6: Oh, you're marinating?
• 16:18
  Speaker 5: Oh, good.
• 16:19
Speaker 2: You're marinating your stories and ready to share all things
• 16:22
  Speaker 2: Parents Weekend? Yeah.
• 16:25
Speaker 6: And our Parents Weekend.
• 16:26
Speaker 2: Okay, so you're both at UC Berkeley. What year are
• 16:29
Speaker 2: you and what houses are you in?
• 16:33
Speaker 6: Best question ever. We are seniors and we are actually
• 16:37
Speaker 6: in two different houses. She's in Delta Gamma. I'm in Kappa.
• 16:40
Speaker 6: And we live in a 14-person senior house with DG
• 16:43
  Speaker 6: and Kappa.
• 16:44
Speaker 2: Oh, that is so fun.
• 16:46
  Speaker 4: I love that.
• 16:48
Speaker 2: Did you guys know each other freshman year? Oh, gosh.
• 16:52
  Speaker 6: Or from home?
• 16:53
  Speaker 2: Tell me.
• 16:54
Speaker 6: She's just a laugher. No, we knew each other.
• 16:57
  Speaker 4: We were friends.
• 16:57
  Speaker 6: And then we.
• 17:00
Speaker 9: Like are in the same like extended friend group. And
• 17:03
Speaker 9: then we went abroad and we were both in Florence together.
• 17:05
Speaker 9: So that's when we really became friends. We were actually,
• 17:09
Speaker 9: we were signed to be in this house before we
• 17:10
  Speaker 9: were really friends.
• 17:11
  Speaker 7: I know.
• 17:12
Speaker 6: We were going to live with each other no matter what,
• 17:13
Speaker 6: but we clicked abroad. And thank God. Me and her.
• 17:18
  Speaker 4: Love it.
• 17:19
  Speaker 2: Love it.
• 17:20
  Speaker 3: I love it.
• 17:21
Speaker 2: Match made in heaven.
• 17:23
  Speaker 6: Okay.
• 17:24
Speaker 2: So tell me about Parents Weekend, just like a big
• 17:28
Speaker 2: picture elevator, elevator speech about your Parents Weekend experiences, what
• 17:35
Speaker 2: you love and what you don't.
• 17:36
Speaker 9: Okay. Well, so I think I'm in a little bit
• 17:40
Speaker 9: of a unique state. Well, I'll give the summary kind
• 17:42
Speaker 9: of of Parents Weekend, at least what it feels like
• 17:44
Speaker 9: at Cal. Typically what you'll do is like your parents
• 17:47
Speaker 9: will come on like Friday and then our game days
• 17:49
Speaker 9: are on Saturday. So like you can kind of do something.
• 17:51
Speaker 9: You'll take your parents to like the frat parties or
• 17:53
Speaker 9: you'll take them to the bars and like they'll go
• 17:56
Speaker 9: kind of crazy. Buy like rounds of drinks from your friends,
• 17:58
Speaker 9: which is always really fun. Or like we had a
• 18:00
Speaker 9: cute little like dinner at our house, which was really nice.
• 18:03
Speaker 4: And then go to the game day.
• 18:04
Speaker 9: So for us this year, at least our game day
• 18:06
Speaker 9: was like the game itself was at 1230. So we
• 18:08
  Speaker 9: started drinking at like 9 a.m. which I don't think
• 18:11
Speaker 9: was super compatible with every single parent. It was a lot.
• 18:14
  Speaker 4: Yeah.
• 18:15
Speaker 6: Yeah. My dad was ripping tequila shots at 9am. I'm like, mother,
• 18:20
Speaker 6: this is a lot. Slow down.
• 18:24
  Speaker 9: It's, it's major, but it's, it's funny. Cause you also
• 18:27
Speaker 9: get to see, especially I've noticed in our senior house now,
• 18:30
Speaker 9: like the types of parents that, like Avery are like
• 18:34
Speaker 9: ripping shots, going really crazy, having so much fun.
• 18:38
Speaker 4: And my parents who I love are a little bit
• 18:39
  Speaker 4: more reserved.
• 18:40
Speaker 9: And so that's kind of something that I've like noticed
• 18:42
Speaker 9: throughout these four years is like, my parents are great.
• 18:45
Speaker 9: And they're really awesome at like socializing with other parents
• 18:47
Speaker 9: or their kids, but like, they're not doing dunkaroos at Z.
• 18:51
Speaker 2: What the heck is a dunkaroo?
• 18:53
  Speaker 6: A dunkaroo.
• 18:58
Speaker 9: My parents learned this when they came freshman year because
• 19:00
Speaker 9: they saw my friend's dad's doing it. But basically, it's
• 19:03
Speaker 9: like a fraternity will have a trash can. like filled
• 19:07
Speaker 9: to the it's clean but like filled to the brim.
• 19:08
Speaker 4: Oh i was gonna say okay all right clean.
• 19:11
Speaker 6: Like just a bin just like a big but all
• 19:13
Speaker 6: clean like it's not that clean it's fraternity house clean
• 19:18
Speaker 6: yeah you gotta you gotta take what you got but.
• 19:21
Speaker 9: It's filled like totally with water and then there's a
• 19:23
Speaker 9: bunch of like coarse lights in the can and so
• 19:26
Speaker 9: you have to like they put you in a handstand
• 19:29
Speaker 9: and you have your hands on the lid and you're diving,
• 19:31
Speaker 9: like bobbing for apples.
• 19:32
  Speaker 4: Yes.
• 19:35
Speaker 6: And you're like in a headstand.
• 19:36
  Speaker 4: Oh my gosh.
• 19:37
Speaker 9: And so you come up and someone like has a
• 19:40
Speaker 9: beer ready for you already, like in the shotgun, like
• 19:43
Speaker 9: regulatory way. And they hand you the beer and then
• 19:47
Speaker 9: the person in front of you slaps you in the
• 19:49
  Speaker 9: face and.
• 19:49
Speaker 4: Then you have to shotgun.
• 19:51
Speaker 9: Yeah drenched from the water get handed a beer get
• 19:56
Speaker 9: slapped you're like oh my god okay And so it
• 19:58
  Speaker 9: wakes you up.
• 19:59
  Speaker 6: Honestly, it does.
• 20:00
Speaker 2: I mean, there you go with a slap in the face. Um, gosh,
• 20:05
Speaker 2: I like, so my son is, is a freshman at
• 20:08
Speaker 2: CU Boulder and my daughter is a senior in high school.
• 20:12
Speaker 2: And we are going to parents weekend this weekend, not
• 20:15
Speaker 2: like we're an hour away, maybe 45 minutes. So we're
• 20:18
Speaker 2: just going to drive up for the football game, but
• 20:20
Speaker 2: my husband doesn't drink. So I'm like, like, and, and Max,
• 20:25
Speaker 2: our son isn't in a fraternity. So I feel like
• 20:29
Speaker 2: a lot of this stuff is revolved around fraternity parties.
• 20:33
Speaker 2: Is there anything that like the sorority houses do or like,
• 20:38
Speaker 2: girls that you're friends with that aren't in houses. Obviously
• 20:42
Speaker 2: if there's, if it's a football school, most people are
• 20:44
Speaker 2: going to a football game, tailgating, all that kind of stuff.
• 20:48
Speaker 2: But what are you finding that people are doing that
• 20:50
Speaker 2: might not just be partying, which I still want to
• 20:53
Speaker 2: hear those stories, but I love just selfishly to hear
• 20:57
Speaker 2: kind of like that experience for people who aren't in
• 21:00
Speaker 2: a fraternity or sorority.
• 21:02
  Speaker 4: Totally.
• 21:03
  Speaker 2: Yeah.
• 21:03
Speaker 6: I feel like, well, what I know is like the
• 21:06
Speaker 6: people that are in Greek life and we do other
• 21:08
Speaker 6: things that aren't just partying. Like for instance, like there's
• 21:12
Speaker 6: this day for the sororities, maybe on the Sunday after
• 21:15
Speaker 6: the game where they do like presents where the big
• 21:18
Speaker 6: will present the new little that just.
• 21:20
Speaker 2: Got into the sorority.
• 21:23
Speaker 6: And we'll present them in front of the families. And
• 21:25
Speaker 6: then they say like a little speech about why, The
• 21:28
Speaker 6: little special and why that they picked them and how
• 21:31
Speaker 6: they're going to create this great friendship. And I remember
• 21:34
Speaker 6: that being really special. And then other things are just
• 21:38
Speaker 6: like a lot of families just go to dinner and
• 21:40
Speaker 6: a lot of families just like spend quality time and
• 21:42
Speaker 6: are walking through the campus. And like, I know when
• 21:45
Speaker 6: my parents get here. They want to go through the
• 21:47
Speaker 6: campus again. They've been through it many times, but they're like, let's.
• 21:49
  Speaker 4: Go do it.
• 21:50
Speaker 6: They want to go to the bookstore. They want to
• 21:52
  Speaker 6: buy merch.
• 21:53
Speaker 4: They want to do the whole thing.
• 21:55
Speaker 6: So honestly, it doesn't even matter if you're in a
• 21:57
Speaker 6: Greek house, like you go in the campus, go explore,
• 22:00
Speaker 6: go get merch. I feel like that's what Parents Weekend's about.
• 22:03
Speaker 6: Just like yourself and your son or daughter's college experience.
• 22:08
  Speaker 1: Totally.
• 22:09
Speaker 2: Okay. Is it something that you guys personally look forward
• 22:13
Speaker 2: to Parents Weekend? Or do you feel like the last
• 22:15
Speaker 2: people I talked to- they were saying that it is
• 22:18
Speaker 2: like one of the moms requires like an itinerary and
• 22:21
Speaker 2: it's kind of stressful leading up to it. You know,
• 22:24
Speaker 2: are you guys looking forward to it whenever it happens
• 22:27
Speaker 2: or does it come along with some stress?
• 22:31
Speaker 6: Wait, I look forward to it because I'm from LA
• 22:35
Speaker 6: and so my parents aren't in NorCal, so I love
• 22:38
Speaker 6: seeing them. I also have three brothers, two of which
• 22:42
Speaker 6: are Um, one of them is then he graduated college.
• 22:45
Speaker 6: He went to Oregon. He was a frat guy.
• 22:47
  Speaker 4: He loves coming.
• 22:48
Speaker 6: He loves doing the whole shebang. And then I have
• 22:50
Speaker 6: a little brother who's genuinely 15 sophomore in high school.
• 22:55
Speaker 6: He is the cutest thing ever. And he's like, He's
• 22:58
Speaker 6: like experimenting a little bit. And I was like, try
• 23:01
Speaker 6: the beer. And I'm just like, this is amazing.
• 23:04
Speaker 4: Yeah, that's so fun.
• 23:05
Speaker 6: So I personally look forward to it.
• 23:07
  Speaker 4: Okay.
• 23:07
  Speaker 1: Yeah.
• 23:08
  Speaker 9: I think sometimes I'm a little bit mixed. Like I
• 23:10
Speaker 9: was saying before, my parents maybe aren't the same as
• 23:12
Speaker 9: Avery's parents. And I think at least when I felt
• 23:15
Speaker 9: that this weekend, I was kind of like, oh, I
• 23:17
Speaker 9: wish like my dad doesn't really drink.
• 23:18
Speaker 4: Neither does my mom really.
• 23:19
Speaker 9: So I was kind of like, oh, it would be
• 23:20
Speaker 9: nice to like have a little glass of wine with
• 23:22
Speaker 9: my mom and like be.
• 23:23
Speaker 4: Able to like keep going. We kiki all the same.
• 23:26
Speaker 9: It doesn't need to be like this party environment. But
• 23:28
Speaker 9: it was kind of funny at the same time, like
• 23:31
Speaker 9: what I really want to see my parents doing a
• 23:33
Speaker 9: dunkaroo at a frat, like maybe not as still, I
• 23:36
Speaker 9: can also be super embarrassed. Like grass is always kind
• 23:38
Speaker 9: of greener on the other side.
• 23:40
Speaker 4: What was really fun. I still look forward to it now.
• 23:43
Speaker 4: I love my parents.
• 23:44
Speaker 9: I also like am from around here. And so I
• 23:46
Speaker 9: see them really often anyways. But my older brother went here.
• 23:51
Speaker 9: He graduated two years ago, but I really loved when
• 23:54
Speaker 9: I was a freshman and sophomore and he was a
• 23:55
Speaker 9: junior and a senior getting to like do all the
• 23:57
Speaker 9: family stuff, all of us together. That was always like
• 24:00
Speaker 9: super cute. And if my parents were kind of like
• 24:03
Speaker 9: wiped out from like going out, I would just stay
• 24:05
Speaker 9: with my brother. And that was always really fun. It's
• 24:07
Speaker 9: like more sad now that it's just me. but it was,
• 24:10
  Speaker 9: she was lucky.
• 24:12
  Speaker 6: Yeah.
• 24:13
Speaker 2: I haven't thought about that because, um, we're bringing my
• 24:16
Speaker 2: daughter who's a senior in high school to the football game.
• 24:20
Speaker 2: And it is interesting. Like, I haven't thought about her
• 24:23
Speaker 2: actually staying and us coming home. Like maybe she would
• 24:27
Speaker 2: want to do that. Cause how fun would that be?
• 24:31
Speaker 9: I got to visit my older brother when I was
• 24:33
Speaker 9: a senior in high school too. And like, my brother
• 24:35
Speaker 9: and I don't get along all the time, but like
• 24:36
Speaker 9: to have a protective person and like, I'm sure that
• 24:40
Speaker 9: your son is always going to be looking out for
• 24:42
Speaker 9: your daughter. Like it's, it was so fun to have.
• 24:44
Speaker 9: And also just to visit him before I even came
• 24:46
Speaker 9: to Cal. Like I, yeah the best times yeah that's awesome.
• 24:50
Speaker 2: Okay we've talked about um parents can be embarrassing a
• 24:53
Speaker 2: little bit have do either of you have stories of
• 24:56
Speaker 2: embarrassing parent moments oh my.
• 24:59
Speaker 6: Gosh we i definitely do okay wonderful okay i know
• 25:03
Speaker 6: i know i was like trying to think about i
• 25:06
Speaker 6: have one um okay so i know what you're gonna
• 25:10
Speaker 6: say okay so Okay, the best part about Parents Weekend,
• 25:14
Speaker 6: or not the best part, the weirdest part about Parents
• 25:17
Speaker 6: Weekend is when you have gotten with someone and they
• 25:21
Speaker 6: are at the same party as you and your parents
• 25:25
Speaker 6: and you have a really weird interaction where it's like
• 25:28
Speaker 6: they come over, they say hi, and my mom goes,
• 25:31
Speaker 6: oh my gosh, how do you guys know each other? Um, well, mother,
• 25:36
Speaker 6: I don't think you should know. And then the guy
• 25:40
Speaker 6: acts all awkward. He's like, oh, we've met in class.
• 25:42
Speaker 6: I'm like, honey, we did not meet in class.
• 25:43
Speaker 4: Like, let's be honest.
• 25:45
Speaker 6: Yeah, right. So that has happened to me.
• 25:46
  Speaker 8: Yes.
• 25:47
  Speaker 2: Okay.
• 25:47
Speaker 4: Yeah, a little awkward. I feel like I also.
• 25:53
Speaker 9: I wonder, does your mom even know? Like, she probably
• 25:54
Speaker 9: totally is like, oh, that was like a strange interaction.
• 25:58
  Speaker 2: Oh, she knows.
• 25:58
Speaker 6: Because I tell my mom a lot more than she
• 26:01
Speaker 6: should ever know. And after, I literally, she was like,
• 26:05
Speaker 6: I saw the sexual tension. I'm like, okay, mother, I
• 26:07
Speaker 6: did not. She's like, I know something. And I'm like, oh,
• 26:12
Speaker 6: hell no. And then I tell her everything. And then
• 26:14
Speaker 6: she's like, oh, it was cute. I'm like, yeah, I
• 26:16
Speaker 6: know he was cute.
• 26:21
Speaker 4: That's why it happened.
• 26:22
Speaker 6: I'm like, that's why it happened.
• 26:24
  Speaker 4: Thank you.
• 26:25
Speaker 6: That's my embarrassing story is just the fact that you're
• 26:28
Speaker 6: in your college campus. You're around the people that you
• 26:30
Speaker 6: might have gotten with in the past. And then now
• 26:33
Speaker 6: your parents are in that area. So it gets weird.
• 26:37
Speaker 4: It gets weird. Yeah.
• 26:39
Speaker 2: I feel like it's funny because I was just in LA. Actually,
• 26:42
  Speaker 2: I just flew back. But I was, I did a
• 26:46
Speaker 2: little story about how I clean up like my hotel
• 26:50
Speaker 2: room when I leave the hotel room. I don't know why.
• 26:53
Speaker 2: It's like, I know there's going to be a housekeeping coming,
• 26:56
Speaker 2: but I just kind of tidy it up. I don't
• 26:58
Speaker 2: clean it, but I tidy it up. Do you feel
• 27:01
Speaker 2: like before your parents come, you need to like, tidy
• 27:04
Speaker 2: up and, and shove the cobwebs or the diary notes
• 27:08
Speaker 2: about the guy that you just hooked up with under
• 27:10
Speaker 2: the bed or what?
• 27:12
Speaker 9: Well, I think even now living in a 14 person home,
• 27:15
Speaker 9: whether or not the paraphernalia belongs to me, like it really,
• 27:21
Speaker 9: we did a deep cleaning, but I think it's also like, we,
• 27:24
Speaker 9: we are all 21 now. And I think there's like
• 27:26
Speaker 9: a more level of maturity that like, when my parents
• 27:29
Speaker 9: came up, they had like four bottles of Prosecco.
• 27:31
  Speaker 4: Yeah.
• 27:32
Speaker 9: Really like, mind as much anymore but definitely whether it's
• 27:36
Speaker 9: like actual physical things to hide or just like internal
• 27:39
  Speaker 9: like yeah.
• 27:40
Speaker 6: No and also the night before they came her sorority
• 27:43
Speaker 6: had a formal and we had a hundred person pregame
• 27:47
Speaker 6: at our house so that was the night before so
• 27:51
Speaker 6: like we all had to clean up in the morning
• 27:52
Speaker 6: deep clean just for like So our parents didn't think
• 27:55
Speaker 6: that we were slops.
• 27:56
Speaker 9: That was actually really, that next morning, because I live
• 28:00
Speaker 9: close by my, and my mom is like such a
• 28:01
Speaker 9: type A person. She like called me at 10 AM
• 28:03
Speaker 9: and was like, Hey, I need to set up the tablecloths.
• 28:05
Speaker 9: Like I'm coming to Berkeley right now.
• 28:06
Speaker 4: I was like, Oh my God. And like, you're like, no, no, no, no,
• 28:11
  Speaker 4: you're not.
• 28:11
  Speaker 6: You're not going.
• 28:12
  Speaker 4: Yeah. I wasn't home at 10 a.m. when she called.
• 28:17
  Speaker 6: She was busy.
• 28:17
Speaker 3: Oh, no, so she showed up?
• 28:19
Speaker 4: I got home before she showed up. But then she's like,
• 28:22
Speaker 4: will you come with me?
• 28:23
Speaker 9: And I'm like so hungover. I like don't have my
• 28:26
Speaker 9: contacts in, so I can't see. And I'm at Safeway
• 28:28
Speaker 9: trying to buy Prosecco with my mom. And I like
• 28:31
Speaker 9: see one of my distant friends and parents. And she
• 28:35
Speaker 9: was like, oh, hi, how are you? And I was like, oh,
• 28:39
Speaker 9: I'm good to see you. I'm really hungover.
• 28:41
Speaker 6: And I, like, said this to.
• 28:43
Speaker 4: Parents that I didn't know. And they were like, oh, okay.
• 28:46
Speaker 4: And I just kept walking. I don't know. It was
• 28:49
  Speaker 4: really funny.
• 28:52
Speaker 9: My mom could tell I was extremely hungover, but she
• 28:54
Speaker 9: was kind enough to just not really ask any questions.
• 28:56
Speaker 6: I put a Gatorade in before.
• 28:59
Speaker 2: And I feel like you're also seniors and you're 21. So,
• 29:02
Speaker 2: you know, like as parents, I feel like when my
• 29:04
Speaker 2: kids get to be that age, like they're just living
• 29:08
Speaker 2: their lives and they're doing it legally. So whatever, you know,
• 29:11
Speaker 2: as long as you're being safe and you're being kind
• 29:14
Speaker 2: humans and good humans, like I feel like that's the
• 29:17
Speaker 2: general like feeling of parents is you want to be
• 29:20
Speaker 2: supportive of your kids and like not isolate them. So
• 29:24
Speaker 2: I'm sure you being hung over is, was not a shock.
• 29:27
  Speaker 8: Yeah.
• 29:28
Speaker 9: Well, with my two older brothers and the brother that
• 29:30
Speaker 9: went here was like president of his fraternity.
• 29:32
Speaker 4: Like she's, she's seen worse from him. So it's like,
• 29:35
  Speaker 4: it's fine.
• 29:35
  Speaker 6: Right.
• 29:36
Speaker 2: But like yeah all right girls thank you so much
• 29:39
Speaker 2: for coming on the podcast and sharing all about parents
• 29:41
Speaker 2: weekend thanks for having us thank you
